ONE OF THE NEWEST developments of industry rising from the commercial application of scientific knowledge is in the making of solid carbon dioxide from the gas about 1925 the first efforts were made to manufacture "dry ice" on a large scale and at a price to permit widespread use. From that beginning the industry has grown to a consumption of 40,000 tons in 1930. Carbon-dioxide ice, as the name implies, is merely the gas compressed and cooled to a solid. The ice has a temperature of 109° F. below zero and is in many ways superior to water ice. It evaporates to a gaseous form so it is not wet and leaves no trace; in fact, one suggested minor use is as coasters under water glasses on the dining table. The gas is harmless except in large concentrations and. when the ice is used as a refrigerant, the resulting gas actually becomes a preservative, keeping oxygen away from perishable products. Not only does the ice have a greater amount of cold in a small volume than water ice but cooling is effected by direct contact of the resulting gas with the materials to be refrigerated rather than by convection air currents.

The mining law of British North Borneo is entitled " The Mining Ordinance , 1927. 113 The only mining regulation or rule available is " Rules 313 , 114 passed in accordance with article 26 of the ordinance of 1927. Before the passage of this legislation , the country had no specific law governing the granting of mineral rights , although the land law contained provisions relating to mining lands . The land ordinance of 19135 still controls in a few details . All references in this paper , unless otherwise specifically designated , are to the mining ordinance .

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) IT may be of interest, and perhaps of importance, to the members of the Institute that specific mention should be made in detail of the great value of this method of copying or photographing all kinds of tracings.* Several samples are laid upon the table which may serve as illustrations of the results obtained. Some of these show slight imperfections, depending upon the character of the tracing, and upon the length of the exposure to the light, but it may be clearly seen that even a faint copy would be quite available for actual use. The process is believed to be of French origin, and has been used for many years. Special attention seems to have been directed to it recently, and its great value to engineers appears likely to be fully recognized. The manipulations required are of the simplest possible kind, and are entirely within the skill and comprehension of any office boy who can be trusted to copy a letter in an ordinary press. These particulars may be summarized somewhat thus 1. Provide a flat board as. large as the tracing which is to be copied. 2. Lay on this board two or three thicknesses of common blanket, or its equivalent, to give a slightly yielding backing for the paper. 3. Lay on the blanket the prepared paper with the sensitive side uppermost. 4. Lay on this paper the tracing, smoothing it out as perfectly as possible so as to insure a perfect contact with the paper. 5. Lay on the tracing a plate of clear glass, which should be heavy enough to press the tracing close down upon the paper. Ordinary plate-glass of ill thickness is quite sufficient. 6. Expose the whole to a clear sunlight, by pushing it out on a shelf from an ordinary window, or in any other convenient way, for six to ten minutes. If a clear skylight only can be had, the exposure must be continued for thirty or forty-five minutes, and under a cloudy sky, sixty to ninety minutes may be needed. * The introduction of this process into the United States is due principally to Mr. A. L. Holley, who first drew the attention of American engineers to its simplicity and convenience. Mention was also made of the process at the meeting of the Institute in New York, in February, 1877, by Mr. Ogden Haight.

"This paper describes the innovative full-face conventional tunnel excavation technology, with its advantages in terms of savings and safety. The full-face approach has been developed throughout the experiences gained in tunnel construction. The innovative design approach is focused primarily on the deformation response of the ground acting first and foremost ahead of the face, which is analyzed, predicted and controlled by pre-confinement of the core. The advantage of this method is particularly evident in difficult grounds. This paper will present the outstanding benefits given by the adoption of the full-face approach in two projects, the “Sochi” and the “Visnove” tunnels. THEORY AND DESIGN ASPECTS OF THE FULL-FACE EXCAVATION The main challenges in tunnel and underground construction industry are gathering the design data from the ground that is being excavated and foreseeing the critical stage during construction, where the materials are in its most critical configuration. These challenges shall be addressed during excavation when the lining and the excavation disturbance have not yet reach the equilibrium. The in situ stresses in the ground are redistributed (forming an “arch-effect”) around the opening, with zones of increased stresses around the walls of the excavation (Figure 1). The distribution of the stresses can be close or far from the excavation profile, depending upon having a ground capable of withstanding the deviated stresses well or unable to withstand them, respectively. In the latter case, the ground will plasticize and deform in proportion to the volume of ground involved in the plasticization phenomenon. When the ground completely cannot withstand the stresses redistribution, it will cause the collapse of the excavation. While in the first case, the arch effect occurs naturally, in the second case, it does occur naturally only when the ground is stabilized properly. In the case of collapse, the arch-effect must be produced artificially operating on the ground prior excavation. The design should be based on the understanding of if and how the arch-effect can be mobilized during tunnel excavation and ensure that is formed by calibrating excavation and stabilization operations appropriately. The arch-effect is function of the medium that is being excavated, the action taken to excavate and the reaction expected following the excavation."

What is your personal view and assessment of the overall health of the industry in the current global economy? The economic outlook remains soft for the near future and, although the global economy is showing signs of recovery, uncertainty has tempered the pace of recovery. In addition to uncertainty, we are still facing significant economic challenges in many parts of the world, including Europe and the United States. The rapid expansion of China?s economy has recently slowed, further contributing to the sense of uncertainty in the overall health of the global economy. This situation is both a blessing and a curse, depending on which sector of the mining industry we are considering. For example, coal, industrial minerals, aggregates, base metal and precious metals markets are impacted by different forces and drivers and will experience different outcomes within the same economic environment. Let me give a few concrete examples to illustrate this concept. The prevailing economic uncertainty that I have just described tends to drive investors toward safe havens. Gold has historically been viewed as a safe haven and as long as investors shy away from traditional investments, gold prices will remain high and gold mining companies will continue to expand and invest capital in their operations. The same sluggish economy that drives gold prices higher has the opposite effect on other segments of the minerals industry. A great example of this is industrial minerals and aggregates used in construction. The markets that consume these minerals have contracted significantly over the past five years. The outlook for this segment is poor, as the glut of available housing continues to inhibit demand for new construction and, thus, many industrial minerals. In addition to this, the federal government?s lack of political will to enact long-term legislation funding transportation and infrastructure projects continues to be a drag on the U.S. aggregates industry.

Com o aumento dos investimentos energéticos na região amazônica, surge a necessidade de recapacitação das linhas de transmissão existentes, a fim de mitigar as interrupções de fornecimento de energia para os grandes centros urbanos. Dentro deste contexto, as ligas termorresistentes possuem alta capacidade de transmissão de eletricidade, propondo-se avaliar a influência do tratamento térmico sobre as propriedades da liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,35-0,45]%Fe modificada pelo teor de 0,15%Zr. Os lingotes foram obtidos por fundição direta em coquilha metálica, usinados e envelhecidos artificialmente por 04 (quatro) horas a 150ºC e comparado seus resultados para a mesma liga sem tratamento. A influência do tratamento térmico foi avaliada através da caracterização macroestrutural, elétrica (ensaio de resistividade) e mecânica (ensaio de tração). Foi selecionado o diâmetro que apresentou os melhores resultados nos ensaios, para realização dos testes de termorresistividade, segundo o Protocolo COPEL e a Norma ASTM B941-10. O tratamento térmico provocou ligeiro aumento nos valores de condutividade elétrica e limite de resistência à tração (LRT), sem alteração da macroestrutura. Como destaque, o diâmetro 3,0 mm apresentou os melhores resultados de LRT e condutividade, cujos fios foram caracterizados como termorresistentes com e sem tratamento térmico segundo o Protocolo Copel, e somente os fios com tratamento térmico segundo a norma ASTM B941-10.

IN COMPARISON with recent years 1932 has yielded much less tangible evidence of progress in copper reduction and refining. The industry has been extremely quiet, especially in the United States. Design and construction has been throttled by lack of new capital expenditures. The excess producing capacity of the whole industry and the extremely gloomy outlook for the future have made it unwise to tie up more capital except under special conditions. The plants built during the previous year have, however, been placed in operation. Older plants have been abandoned, temporarily shut down, placed on part time operating basis, or continue to operate at a low percentage of normal capacity. In the United States the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Douglas, Ariz., has completed the remodeling of the former Calumet & Arizona smelter. A new roaster and Cottrell plant chimney was completed this year. Though operations have been limited the new equipment has been found to justify all expectations. The reverberatory plant addition consists of two furnaces 26 by 107 ft. inside dimensions, with a high arch, and modern steel binding of excellent design. Natural gas fuel gives good results. One of these furnaces will treat 1000 tons of solid charge per day with a fuel consumption of approximately 3,000,000 B.t.u. per ton. The larger converters have not only yielded the expected lower costs, but have simplified operations in the converter department. "Attempts to reduce the energy requirements of water recovery in the process industries have resulted in the development of techniques to freeze and purify aqueous solutions that take advantage of local climatic conditions. Natural freezing is a technique by which aqueous solution is exposed to freezing air temperatures, resulting in the production of a layer of ice on the surface. As the ice layer tends to exclude solute, a concentrated solution is formed. However, due to dendritic ice growth along the advancing growth front, small quantities of solution are trapped within the ice, decreasing the purity of the water recovered. The ice produced can then be allowed to thaw in order to recover the water using low grade plant heat. As the more concentrated parts of the ice melt first, a purer ice remains. In this study, 0.5 molal magnesium sulfate solution was frozen under simulated natural freezing conditions at temperatures between –1 and –6°C. The ice produced was thawed at either room temperature or 50°C. Up to 40% of the water was recovered with a separation efficiency of above 95% when thawing at room temperature.INTRODUCTION Advances in refrigeration technology have made low-temperature separation processes increasingly appealing to an energy-conscious society. The latent heat of freezing of water is about seven times smaller than the latent heat of evaporation providing freezing with a strong thermodynamic advantage over the traditional evaporation-based processes. The result is the development of a wide variety of processes that fall under the term Freeze Concentration (FC), which describes a variety of techniques in which an aqueous solution is concentrated by the creation and subsequent removal of ice (Williams et al., 2015).FC processes exploit the freezing behaviour of aqueous solutions as dictated by their respective water-salt phase diagram. When, for example, a solution of magnesium sulfate is cooled to a temperature below its freezing point but above its eutectic temperature of –4.1?C (Figure 1) then, if the concentration of MgSO4 is less than the eutectic concentration (about 1.7 m), ice will form until the solution concentration reaches its equilibrium concentration at the given temperature on its phase diagram. If the concentration is greater than the eutectic concentration, MgSO4 solid will precipitate until the concentration reaches equilibrium. It is for this reason that ice can be selectively produced in FC processes (Randall & Nathoo, 2015)."

"Various methods of leaching are being used by Denison Mines Ltd. Uranium Operations. This study was designed to investigate the flood leaching operation of two parallel inter-connected stopes contained by pressure bulkheads. The teaching muck piles, created from large scale uppers production blasts, are aerated by compressed air lines laid beneath the pile prior to blasting.A SFr, tracer gas, injection technique has been employed to determine the post-blast integrity of the single-ended air distribution system. SF6 was injected into the compressed air line feed to the stopes and collected at borehole exhausts from the stopes in grab-sampling bags. Analyses of the air samples were performed with a gas chromatograph.The system was designed to give a sufficiency of oxygen to sustain bacterial activities used to enhance the leaching recovery in the muck piles. The results obtained indicated that there is a minor anomaly in the distribution system that may not be critical to the operation. Compared to an idealized case, the over-all efficiency of aeration throughout the muck is estimated at over 85%."

Froth flotation processes are carried out in flotation cells that are grouped into banks, and these banks are interconnected, forming a flotation circuit. A literature review shows the existence of papers related to flotation circuit design based on mathematical programming. However, due to the complexity of solving the mathematical model in most of the work, it is considered that a small number of species is present in the feed to the circuit, which differs from practice. In addition, simple bank models are generally used. This paper presents a methodology for designing mineral concentration circuits that overcomes the problems mentioned. It allows the use of more suitable cell or bank models and the inclusion of several species. The methodology is based on two phases. The first phase identifies the set of optimal structures using discrete values of stage recoveries, solving several mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems. In the second phase, the optimal design for each of the structures obtained in the previous phase is determined using a suitable model for the recovery at each cell or bank, which results in a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The design of a copper concentration plant with eight species and the design of a zinc concentration plant with three species and five size fractions by species are used to validate the proposed methodology. The structure of the cells in the rougher and cleaner banks deliver structures that are novel.

"Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) has become the mainstream technology for ultra-heavy oil recovery in Xinjiang oilfield, the success of which depends heavily on shortening of preheating period as well as forming homogeneous and highly permeable zone in land-facies oilsands layer. Towards this aim a special hydraulic fracturing process is required, which is accomplished through controlled water injection to a pair of horizontal wells in order to create homogenously distributed microcracks in the zone between the two wells. The associated mechanical response, however, is unclear for land-facies Karamay oilsands that is loose in texture. In this regard, this research utilizes a triaxial test system on cylindrical specimens extracted from field-collected oilsands cores. Isotropically consolidated drained triaxial compression tests are conducted on both saturated and unsaturated specimens so as to investigate the mechanical response of oilsands at different spots relative to the wellbore. Moreover, acoustic emission and fast pulse-decay permeability are performed to monitor fracture development and permeability evolution. Based on these experimental studies, the mechanism of dilation in oilsands is comprehensively analyzed. The findings reveal distinctive behavior between the saturated and unsaturated specimens as respect to dilation, porosity/volumetric evolution and change of permeability. It is also found that shear bands can be created upon shearing on triaxial specimens, rendering porosity or volumetric strain the factor that is more proper for evaluation of stimulation efficiency in the field.INTRODUCTIONXinjiang oilfield is widely known for its abundant deposit of heavy and ultra-heavy oil that has been estimated to be several hundred million tons. The ultra-heavy oil deposit located in Fengcheng region of Karamay at the northwestern part of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China, has over 360 million tons of resource (Yuan et al. 2013). The resource is deposited in depths from 180 to 450 m and has viscosity over 100, 000 mPa•s at a temperature of 50ºC, bringing technical challenges to recovery activities."

"INTRODUCTION Red-iron-ore deposits in northeast Alabama have been exploited at vari¬ous times for nearly 6o years. About 3-1/2 million tons of ore have been produced in the Gadsden district; but mining activity has been dormant since 1926, and furnaces within this section of the State now suffer a shortage of red ore.To alleviate these shortages, work by-the Bureau of Mines was recommended after preliminary investigations. 4/5/ Diamond drilling, to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ores of known deposits in Greasy Cove and on Shinbone Ridge, was done from August 1946 to May 1947, as Project 9-106, Alabama Red Iron Ore. Three holes were drilled in each area.ASKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of domestic mineral resources to the end that they- make the greatest possible contributions to the national security and economy. Os aços inoxidáveis duplex caracterizam-se por apresentarem microestrutura bifásica, ferrítica-austenítica. A fração volumétrica ideal das fases é 50% de ferrita e 50% de austenita, entretanto, essa condição é de difícil obtenção quando realiza-se a união por soldagem a arco desses materiais. Neste trabalho estudou-se as melhores práticas de soldagem do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S31803 garantindo a obtenção de frações volumétricas ideais de ferrita e austenita. Foi soldado um corpo de prova pelos processos TIG e MIG-MAG. Para esse corpo de prova foi realizada a soldagem de um passe de raiz e um passe de reforço através do processo TIG e o preenchimento da junta através do processo MIG-MAG. Foram realizados os seguintes ensaios no corpo de prova: micrografia (metal base, ZAC face, ZAC raiz, face da Zona Fundida e raiz da Zona Fundida), medição da fração volumétrica de ferrita, microdureza Vickers (HV500), ensaio de tração da junta soldada, dobramento guiado, Charpy e ensaio de corrosão por pitting.

This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

Prediction of the thermal duties of copper coolers in freeze lined furnaces is challenging. Where copper coolers are immersed in liquid slag the heat transfer is often defined by a natural convection cell immediately adjacent to the wall, in the absence of other factors producing forced convection. Slag coolers are typically not fully immersed, slag temperature, liquidus and superheat can vary, and bath levels may change significantly with batch tapping, leading to substantial variations in radiation heat fluxes. Radiation heat transfer is discussed with reference to the non-obvious impact of slag liquidus on radiation losses in the exposed cooler sections. Reference is made to literature and the results of analytical and FEM models.

WITH the friendly consent both of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, for whom this paper was written, and of the author, we had the pleasure of publishing Mr. Oliver Hall's paper on Mining at Noranda in our issue of last March and of having Mr. Hall present it at the Montreal Meeting. In the following pages we now report the discussion elicited by the paper at a meeting of the Institution in London on March 18th. The report is taken from the April, 1937, issue of the Bulletin of the Institution, to whom we again tender our thanks. THE PRESIDENT (MR. ROBERT ANNAN) said that this paper was, by arrangement with the Institution and the author, also being published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for approximately simultaneous discussion. He was sorry that Mr. Oliver Hall could not be present to introduce it in person, for he was sure that the author would have had many more details to give about this most interesting mine. The paper contained a very useful account of mining operations, and personally he had been pleased to see the tri-dimensional projections of the orebody in Figs. 3 and S. It was a good illustration o the value of that method in presenting the form of an orebody such as this. While he had no desire to go into technical details, he wished to call attention to a remark in Mr. Hall's introduction, in dealing with the history of the mine and the principles on which it was run. The author had given an account of the early difficulties in solving geological problems, and later of the economic difficulties of seeing this mine through a period of intense depression in metal prices. He stated that it was clear that, to maintain income, tonnage must be increased, and, to maintain profits, costs must be decreased. It would be observed that there was no question of increasing the grade of ore. Then the author went on to say: 'Having set the house in order in the years of adversity, the higher price for gold is being used to mine to still lower limits and lengthen the life of the enterprise and the welfare of those dependent on it'.

The standard free energies of formation of the lowest stable sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten in equilibrium with the corresponding metal hazle been determined by reacting the sulfide and metal with H2(g)/H2S(g) mixtures. The reaction is A method for estimating the standard ~nolav entropies and standard entropies of formation at 298°K of the sul-fides of refractory metals is presented. The standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of the metals in group VIa of the periodic table are probably best determined with the reaction* is known with greater accuracy than is that property for any other sulfur-bearing compound or solution which might serve as a reference phase to establish the chemical potential of sulfur for the essential re- However, there still remain significant problems to the use of Reaction [I] in studying these sulfides. First, the equilibrium gas ratios (Ph2S/PH2) are very small, and with the most stable sulfides in the series the ratios tend to be at the limit of the range for precise chemical analysis (10-4); and second, the reaction rate for the formation or reduction of these sulfides appears to be relatively slow. A primary reason for the latter problem is that the gas phase near the equilibrium concentration has very little capacity for transport of sulfur. It is to be noted that the thermo-dynamic properties obtained from the experimental results by Eq. [I] apply for 1 g-atom of sulfur in the metal-saturated compound even though the exact composition of the compound has not been determined. The work reported here is a study of the standard free energies of formation of the lowest sulfides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, and of copper, by Reaction [I]. In planning the experimental program, it was decided that the technique that has been used previously3"' could be used with modification and that an improved analytical method was needed for determining H2S in the gas phase. Ten to twelve million tons of dust is produced by cement kilns annu-ally in the United States, resulting in a serious waste disposal problem. The Bureau of Mines investigated two alkali volatilization methods for converting this dust into materials for making portland cement and a useful potassium product. Portland cement kiln dust was found to be composed of finely ground cement raw materials (CaC03 and 8i02) having a layer of alkali sulfate (K2S04 and Na2S04). In this form, it cannot be directly recycled to cement kilns because concrete is weakened by a reaction between the alkali and the aggregate. Portland cements with 28-day strengths above 5,000 psi were produced from low-alkali residues using sintering and melting methods. For nearly complete removal of alkalies, primarily potassium sulfate, from cement kiln dust, a temperature above 1,300° C and a reducing atmosphere were required.
