A comprehensive field study has been carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling has been carried out to envisage dust concentration due to the existing and closed mines in the region. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 levels at the selected receptor locations ranged from 86.39 to 194.89 and from 34.82 to 99.55 µg/m³, respectively.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Harrison County, W. Va. It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.5 million tons of coal was produced in Harrison County, W. Va., in 1958, of which over 3.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in seven preparation plants. All of the coal cleaned was from the Pittsburgh bed. It has been estimated that more than 1,816 million tons of coal remains in the county in beds 12 inches or more thick. The Pittsburgh and Redstone beds were selected by the Bureau for a study based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were selected following a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Six samples were collected from the Pittsburgh bed, and three samples came from the Redstone bed, Float-and-sink tests of the samples collected from the Pittsburgh and Redstone beds showed that neither coal could be upgraded to a metallurgical fuel under the standards set up for this study, even after intensive preparation. Finer crushing of the samples moderately increased the yields and slightly reduced both the ash and the sulfur contents in the 1.30-specific-gravity float fractions. Finer crushing slightly decreased the yields in the 1.58-specific-gravity float fractions, whereas it reduced the sulfur content 0.11 percent for the Redstone sample and 0.46 for the Pittsburgh sample.

The theme of this conference is blasting productivity. This article only considers the technology aspect of this theme, and in particular, the collection and analysis of experimental data. In many cases, field trials are set up to collect data on variables such as fragmentation and vibration with the aim of comparing different explosive products and/or blast designs. An important aspect of such trials is the collection of sufficient data to draw sound conclusions. In this regard, there is no doubt that the scatter in real data is the root cause of all problems of obtaining misleading results due to an insufficient number of trials. This article shows that the typical one-off trial has a high probability of producing misleading information, which could be considered to be worse than having no information at all. Assuming that sufficient data has been collected, this article also highlights the methods that can be used to make the most of that data. These methods include the application of appropriate statistics that are dependent on the nature of the scatter in the data, and the use of some of the more recent filtering and spectral approaches that can be used to reduce the noise in measured blast signals and increase the resolution of their spectral characteristics.

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, Inco Limited processes a bulk copper-nickel concentrate in two Inco oxygen flash furnaces. The furnace matte is converted to low iron matte for further processing, and the molten converter slag is recycled to the flash furnaces. The flash furnace slag is discarded. Natural gas or coke supplies a minor proportion of the process heat requirements, thus limiting the flash furnace matte grade to the target 45% CuNiCo. Coke addition to the furnace offers a potential means of establishing a reducing barrier on the surface of the molten bath. Such a practice would be conducive to producing sulfur deficient (partially metallized) matte. At the same iron content, the iron activity of sulfur deficient matte is higher than that of regular matte. A supernatant coke barrier could, therefore, be expected to lead to higher nickel and cobalt recoveries, reduction or even elimination of magnetite furnace bottom build-up and increased sulfur elimination as SO2 in the flash furnace. Preliminary experiments were conducted in a mini plant flash furnace to investigate the effect on process metallurgy of the suggested modified scheme. This paper presents the experimental results and discusses key aspects of the possible operation of the Inco flash furnace with a coke barrier separating the freeboard from the molten bath.

A review of recent Australian tunnelling projects shows that substantial differences exist in the level of corrosion protection provided for permanent steel shafted rock bolts. This paper reviews the current state of practice and sets out what the authors consider to be appropriate requirements for corrosion protection.

The Bureau of Mines sought to correlate the variation of structure-sensitive superconducting properties with microstructure in selected Cb-Hf alloys and to compare the experimental results with those predicted by the GLAG theory. Alloys in wire and rod form were evaluated by critical temperature, critical current, magnetization, resistivity measurements, and optical and electron microscopy. In the absence of an external magnetic field, the current carrying capacity of columbium was greatly reduced with addition of up to 85 wt pct Hf, but a large increase in Ic occurred for Cb-90 wt pct Hf. Favorable Ic-H behavior was observed in cold-drawn alloys containing 25 and 57 wt pct Hf. Correspondingly, a maximum in Tc occurred at 10-25 and 90 wt pct Hf. Four- or five-hour heat treatment at 600° C resulted in maximum Ic values and maximum hysteresis in magnetization. Dislocation pileup, polygonization, and fine precipitates, responsible for flux pinning, are listed in order of their effectiveness as pinning sites. Sites having an average separation of 1,500 to 3,000 A and a diameter of 1,000 A or less were most effective in influencing Ic-H and M-H behavior. The resistive critical fields increased smoothly to a maximum of 80 k0e between 60 and 65 wt pct Hf. Highfield, mixed state, reversible paramagnetism was observed in some alloys; however, the GLAG theory was in good agreement with experimental results for the majority of the composition range studied.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Chem) degree Operational factors influencing the electrostatic separation of mineral sands were investigated in a laboratory separator. Measurements were collected online by means of an optical sensor using diffused reflectance spectroscopy to determine the mineralogical composition. The results have shown that the roll speed and potential were the dominant operating variables, collectively explaining more than 83% and 68% of the product grade and yield, respectively. In contrast, the feed rate, temperature and position of the plate did not affect separation. The effect of the ambient relative humidity, ranging from 10% to 45%, could not be assessed conclusively and at best appeared to have a weakly beneficial effect on the product grade. Introductory The Alberta Provincial Government has contemplated a revision of the Mines Act for some time past, and it is understood that a definite decision has now been made to do this at the next session of the Legislature. The Operators' and Miners' organizations of the Province have been asked, or at least have been given the opportunity, to submit their views and ideas relative to the proposed changes. The operators have already drafted out a number of changes which they feel would improve the Act from the standpoint of safety and practicability, and this paper has been prepared so that the general membership of the Rocky Mountain Branch of the Institute, which is composed largely of the operating and certificated officials of the mines, might have an opportunity to discuss, criticize, and improve upon the suggested changes which the operators are putting forward.

Experience, it is said, is the best teacher. Some experiences, however, should be shared so that no one else will ever have to live through them again. The fire at the Sunshine Mine is one such experience. ?Hard-rock mines don?t burn.? The Sunshine Mine near Kellogg, ID, was the nation?s premier silver producer for many years. In 1972, the mine was nearly 6,000 feet deep, contained hundreds of miles of worked-out areas, and employed nearly 500 people. Because of its depth and the type of host rock for the silver (unburnable quartzite), the general thinking of the day was that fires in mines such as the Sunshine were impossible, because ?hard-rock mines don?t burn.? What wasn?t really considered was that timber supports, foam insulation, and mining equipment do burn and that the carbon monoxide gas produced by burning is far more deadly than fire itself. Thus, no one was prepared when, on May 2, 1972, a fire of un-known origin broke out below the 3100 level of the mine. Before long, 173 miners on the day shift were trapped by thick, black smoke. By the time the fire was out, 91 miners had died, and the Sunshine Mine Fire became known as one of the worst mine disasters of the 20th century. It became the catalyst for passage of the Metal/Nonmetal Health and Safety Act of 1977, which applied the same federal safety standards to hard-rock mines as those regulating coal. Mandated safety training, mine inspections, and equipment standards were brought into force.

Flotation of the carbonate, oxide and silicate minerals of copper (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla) has been the subject of much research in recent years, but few effective solutions to this problem have been found. With decreasing reserves of sulfide minerals, the economic recovery of these "oxides" appears to be an important source of copper for the future. Xanthates have been known for many years to be malachite collectors (1), but only at very high dosages, or at lower dosages following activation of the mineral by sulfide ion. Dewitt and Batchelder (2, 3) found that chelating agents such as certain oximes were collectors for malachite and azurite, but also required high reagent dosages. Fuerstenau (4) has suggested, for example, that potassium octylhydroxamate may be an effective collector for malachite, On the other hand, Balberyszski (5) has found that oxide minerals may be completely sulfidized at high temperatures with gaseous sulfur or H2S, and then floated with conventional collectors. None of the above approaches appear to offer an economically effective method for the direct flotation of these oxide minerals.

In this Bureau of Mines report, a previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow in ventilated duct fires is applied to mine-related ventilation systems that utilize an exhaust fan to supply the forced airflows. The coupling between a fire and the ventilation airflow in a single-entry duct is analyzed to relate the air velocity in the absence of a fire to air velocity during a fire. By combining the derived coupling equations with the results of the previously developed theory of reverse stratified flow, it is possible to calculate critical flow velocities required to prevent reverse stratified flow in the event of a duct fire. The sample calculations shown agree with the few experimental results available from small-scale tunnel fires.

In this work the equilibrium temperature-composition phase diagrams of the Si-O2 system were calculated using Thermo-Calc software in the temperature range 500–3000 K. Constituents of stable phases were obtained, and the amounts of certain phases where investigated with the variations in the composition of oxygen and temperature. It is found that quartz with silicon represent a stable phase in the temperature range 500–1150 K, while tridymite with silicon represent a stable phase in the temperature range 1150–1700 K. A liquid phase is found besides tridymite in the temperature range 1700–1750 K, and a stable phase of cristobalite with liquid appears in the temperature range 1750–2000. The maximum amounts of quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite are found at oxygen mole percent of 67.7%.

This paper describes a study, based on core data, of the directional permeability of a sandstone reservoir. Directional air permeabilities are explained and correlated with lithology by the tensor theory of permeability, which is extended to the more general case of heterogeneous anisotzopic porous media. In this case, the permeability tensor is made up of two components: (I) anisotropy (variation around a point) which correlates with bedding, and (21 heterogeneity (variation from point-to-point) which correlates with grain size. INTRODUCTION Previous studies of directional permeabilityl.5-8 have concerned themselves only with anisotropy at a point, rather than with both point-to-point differences and local anisotropies. In this paper, we present the existing tensor theory of permeability for anisotropic porous media and then extend it to the more general case of heterogeneous anisotropic porous media. The laboratory measurements of directional permeability are explained in view of this extended theory and the data are discussed in terms of the lithologic factors that correlate with it. The results show what the heterogeneity and anisotropy of the reservoir element are, and that the directional permeability correlates with lithology. Data used in this paper are measurements of air permeability in eight directions, spaced at 45° intervals, on 142 2-in. vertical plugs from 30 cores. The core data are meaningful in terms of directional permeability because the cores were oriented to within 45O during drilling and coring.3 Although we initially thought that only 60 per cent of the core material was reliable, subsequent study showed that almost all of it was reliably oriented. After determining the air permeabilities, the data were reduced to three independent variables for each plug: the major and minor permeability axes, and the direction of the major axis. These were obtained by converting the permeability data to the reciprocal square root of permeability and fitting the transformed data with ellipses according to the tensor theory of permeability.8 The point-to-point areal variation of the minimum permeability axis is related to grain size. The direction of the permeability axes, where the major axis exceeds the minor axis by at least 5 per cent (measured variation is about 4 per cent), correlates with the bedding. The permeability tensor used in this study must be considered as the sum of a scalar and a tensor, with the scalar being the minor axis permeability as a function of position, and the tensor the directional effect, which is additive permeability over the minor axis. In this case, the point-to-point variation or heterogeneity (minor axis) is substantially larger than the variation at a point or anisotropy. It may be important that this separation of "directional permeabilities" be recognized when considering migration of fluids due to permeability variation. Local migration may be due to anisotropy and point-to-point migration may be due to heterogeneity, but the direction and magnitude of these may not be the same. Furthermore, in truly heterogeneous systems, one would expect that anisotropy would be the smaller of the two effects. A process has been developed for fabricating thin-film resistors that are compatible with integrated circuits. Films are produced by evaporation of single refractory metals using an electron beam heating source. Resistor paths are then made using standard photoresist etching techniques. A low-temperature coefficient of resistance is obtained by control of nucleation during deposition of the film. One application of the process has been the development of a discrete resistor used for current setting in linear integrated circuits. Multiple thin-film resistors were formed on oxidized silicon substrates using molybdenum metal as a source. An evaporated protective layer of SiO2 over the resistor prevents resistance changes which might occur during subsequent high-temperature processing. Properties of a typical resistor are as follows: R = 15.7 ohm per sq, tolerance surface dimensions = 0.028 by 0.028 in., stable after 4000 hr at 0. 75 w without heat sink. THIN-FILM resistors have been investigated for many years with a large selection of usable resistors resulting from a wide variety of materials. Many of the processes necessitate a high degree of complexity but in nearly all cases the conclusions have been that the materials used in each case were acceptable provided the deposition process was reproducible and could be controlled sufficiently to give the required tolerances. It is our opinion that simplicity is still the key to thin-film resistor fabrication. In this regard, the single metal is obviously the simplest process to control, provided all the necessary properties can be obtained. The idea is not original in this laboratory by any means. Others have taken this approach.' It has been demonstrated that a fairly wide range of resistivities can be obtained by careful control of deposition parameters for any given metal, and by selection of several single metals a very broad range of stable resistors can be obtained. The transition from one metal to the next is made when a film becomes too thin for adequate process control or long-term stability. A great deal of emphasis is once again being placed on the thin-film resistor. Although they have been thoroughly studied in the past, new applications have been found that require the properties obtainable only from thin-film resistors. Integrated circuits, in general, are advancing toward higher speeds and radiation environments which require replacement of the present diffused resistors. Linear circuits in particular are requiring high-power, high-precision resistors for the more advanced applications. The particular requirements of some linear circuits are such that a discrete resistor is required. The resistor described in this paper was developed as a 15.7-ohm precision discrete resistor for use in a current regulating circuit requiring a +2 pct end of life overall tolerance, a dissipation of 750 mw, and the ability to operate over a fairly broad temperature range (i.e., a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR). State-of-the-art integrated circuit and silicon processing technology lends itself well to the fabrication of thin-film resistors. Sulfidic zinc concentrates are usually roasted in a fluidized bed furnace into sulfur-free oxide form. Metallic zinc is produced from this oxidic calcine using hydrometallurgical leaching, solution purification and electrowinning stages. The roasting step is necessary because zinc oxides are easier to dissolve using traditional leaching methods than zinc sulfides. The Kokkola Zinc smelter uses various types of zinc concentrates and secondary materials as feed mixture. This makes it difficult to find optimum process parameters for the roaster when the composition and particle size distribution of the feed mixture varies even on a daily basis. Certain conditions may even cause difficult accretion problems or increase the amount of calcine in the process off-gas line excessively. A thermochemical heat and material balance model was developed for process advisor, in order to estimate the effects of different process parameters (temperature, process air coefficient, concentrate feed, oxygen enrichment, water feed, etc.) on the heat balance, roasting temperature and calcine composition. This model was constructed using the heat balance module of HSC Chemistry 4.0 software. The prevailing chemical compounds in the concentrate and calcine were verified using mineralogical analyses and equilibrium calculations. The roasting process seems to operate near chemical equilibrium conditions, if the behavior of the main components is considered. This paper describes briefly the basic principles of the calculation model and outlines the results with several diagrams and discussion. The calculated results were in reasonable agreement with the recent process air oxygen enrichment and water feed test campaigns carried out at Kokkola in 1999.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1954, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey there were 326 refineries with a total daily throughput capacity of 8,420,630 barrels, as of January 1, 1955. The increase in capacity for the year was 413,733 barrels daily, while the number of refineries declined 11. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1954 from 23,759 barrels daily to 25,830. Breaking down the crude-oil capacity increase, by refining districts; 32 percent was installed at refin¬eries located in the Texas Gulf Coast district, 25 percent in the East Coast district, and 13 percent in both the Louisiana Gulf Coast and the California districts. The Appalachian No. 1, Texas Inland, and New Mexico refining districts reported declines in capacity during the year. Additional crude-oil capacity under construction, January 1, 1955, totaled 146,800 barrels daily. Included in this total are 4 new refineries, 1 each in California, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Washington. In addition to the' new facilities, equipment producing 1.49,550 barrels daily is being replaced.

Large lateral forces on bridge foundations due to extreme events such as vessel collisions, earthquakes, and wave forces on storm surges during hurricane events are often the controlling design condition for bridge foundations. A review of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) vessel collision analysis and design codes used in the United States for highway bridges will be presented. The paper includes the background and development of the AASHTO Guide Specification and Commentary for Vessel Collision Design of Highway Bridges (1991) and vessel collision provisions of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (3rd Edition 2004 and the approved 2005 Interims). Experience in using the AASHTO codes will be discussed and observations on the adequacy and gaps, comparison with the European Standard Code, and recommendations for immediate and long term needs will be presented.

Relative enthalpies of cuprous iodide (CuI) were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of min-eral technology. Enthalpy measurements between 298.15 and 1,396.3 K were made with a copper-block drop calorimeter. The temperatures of transition were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Reversible transitions were determined at 643 K with a standard enthalpy of transition [(6Htr)] = 0.74 kca1/mol, at 679 K with a [6Htr = 0.65 kca1/mo1, and at 868 K] with a standard enthalpy of fusion [(6H~) = 1.895 kca1/mol.] Tabulated values are listed at selected temperature increments from 298.15 to 1,600 K for the standard relative enthalpy (HO -H298), heat capacity (CpO), entropy (SO), and Gibbs energy function [-(Go -H298)!T]. The enthalpy data are also given in the form of equations and combined with thermodynamic data from other investigations to derive values of standard entha1pies of formation [(~HfO)], Gibbs energies of formation [(6GfO)], and logarithms of the equilibrium constants of formation (log Kf).

The author discusses some economic conditions which have made the career of the cast-iron pipe industry in the United States a checkered one. He next describes the two new developements in the manufacture of cast-iron pipe-both along the lines of centrifugal casting. The advantages and disadvantages of both processes are presented in some detail. Finally, statistics on the production of pipe in the United States at the present time are given, as well as the plants-and their capacities-so far as these are situated in the South. No SINGLE branch of the foundry industry has been brought to a production basis of huge tonnage, low manufacturing cost, and producing material of a remarkably high quality, as has the making of cast-iron pipe. The pipe shop is an excellent illustration of the fact that repetition work in specialties leads to mechanical equipment and manipulation that lower production costs to an. astonishing degree. Hence cast-iron pipe, in dull times, has been sold at a few dollars a ton over the selling price of the pig iron used. On the other hand, these same pipe, shops make fittings .of many varieties, and in much smaller quantities, where the cost is high, and when pipe may be sold, say, at $50 a ton, the fittings on the same shipment will be sold for nearly double that price. The history of pipe-making, in the United States, is a checkered one the mortality of plants is high and, from the nature of the industry, plants must be large to live. In spite of the fact that the best processes must be used to turn out this rather strict specification material, pipe is easy to make and a pipe plant is more of a tonnage mill than the really high-class specialty foundry it should be. Every time, therefore, that the demand for pipe is strong new shops spring up, only to close when the demand has ceased, but the financial damage to the more permanent plants has been done. Both the South and the North have had abundant experiences of this kind, and when recently a northern Public Service Corporation gave its order to France, the pipe plants thus adversely affected were content to have this occur rather than see-a plant started to supply the surplus demand.
