"The authors describe the use of a computer system for the control oj warehouse inventory at Cominco's Canadian operations. The challenge presented by the company's diverse products and various locations necessitated a practical approach to operational and manpower requirements. The utilization of modern forecasting techniques, manual intervention and exception reporting provides system flexibility. Also, inventory control is regarded as one of the most economically successful computer applications to be undertaken by the Data Processing Services (D.P.S) Group that was responsible for the development of the Inventory Control System.The main use of automatic inventory control has been at operating plants in Western Canada and the Northwest Territories, which are separated by large distances. Each location has equipment-intensive mining and processing operations and it is essential to maintain control of parts and supplies inventories. Some of these locations are remote from urban and industrial centres and it is important to avoid the adverse effects of high personnel costs and re-training due to turnover."

Some of you have only raised your eyebrows, some have made tactful comments, and a few of you have been fairly outspoken, but all of you in industry are concerned at the high level of State expenditure by bodies such as the National Institute for Metallurgy. MgO is routinely used as the basis for refractory materials, however, its susceptibility to hydration may result in dimensional instability and subsequent failure. The addition of boron has been shown to reduce th,e hydration susceptibility of MgO yet its dissolution into certain grades of steel may degrade their performance. In order to predict the efficacy of reducing hydration susceptibility by the incorporation of mono-, di-and tri-and quadravalent cations, the lattices of various cation-substituted systems were modeled. To more accurately simulate the substituted lattices, either cation or anion vacancies were incorporated to maintain electrical neutrality and all possible arrangements of defects in a 2x2x2 MgO supercell were investigated. Correlations were then made between the lattice energies of these systems and their susceptibility to hydration as reported in the literature. The results indicate the presence of higher charged cations tended to increase lattice stability while the cations with lower valency tended to have lower lattice energies. The relatively small body of experimental results available in the literature are consistent' with this study's results.

The effect of the rate of cooling on titanium, zirconium, and thallium has been measured. For titanium-molybdenum alloys, it has been shown that for molybdenum concentration up to 8 pct the rate of cooling has no effect on the transformation temperature, but this temperature decreases progressively with increasing molybdenum content. HIGH strength to weight ratio and remarkable corrosion resistance have often been advanced as the main reasons for the present widespread interest in titanium. For the physical metallurgist, the existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium is another important factor. As in the case of iron, an allotropic transformation may be the fundamental property upon which the response of Ti-base alloys to heat treatment will depend. It is therefore important to study the mechanism of the allotropic transformation in pure titanium and the effect of alloying elements on this transformation. The existence of an allotropic transformation in titanium was reported in 1931 by Schulze.' Later, De Boer et al.' determined the transformation temperature from a discontinuity in the electrical resistivity at 882"42O°C. According to recent work," the transformation temperature is 882.5"&1°C. The crystal structure of the room temperature a phase is hexagonal close-packed and the high temperature fi phase is body-centered cubic.' It is well known that the high temperature /3 phase of pure titanium cannot be retained by quenching to room temperature. Several investigators'-' have shown that in alloys of titanium with metals which are soluble in the @ phase (for example, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, or manganese), the /3 structure can be retained, providing the concentration of the alloying element is greater than a certain critical value. Below this critical value, the alloys transform during quenching, at least partially, into a supersaturated solid solution having the a. structure. This behavior is very similar to that found in some iron binary alloys (Fe-Ni and Fe-Mh, for example) and is an indication that the transformation might occur by means of a shear mechanism analogous to that observed in the austenite-martensite reaction. The present investigation is mostly concerned with the effect of the rate of cooling on the /3 to a transformation. In the first portion of this paper, the results obtained on pure titanium are described. Two other pure metals, zirconium and thallium, were also investigated, because they both have an allotropic transformation like titanium, from an hexagonal close-packed to a body-centered cubic structure. For purposes of comparison, the effect of rate of cooling of the y to a transformation of iron was included in the experimental program. The second part of this paper deals with Ti-Mo alloys. The equilibrium phase boundaries involving the solid state reactions on the Ti-rich side of the system were determined and a study was made of the effect of the rate of cooling on the transformation of the high temperature /3 solid solution. Experimental Procedure Since the main object of the present investigation was the determination of the effect of the rate of cooling on a transformation temperature, the best technique available was that used by Greninger" in his study of the martensite arrest in carbon steels. This method consists of heating a very small sample of metal to which fine thermocouple wires are .attached, cooling the sample rapidly by means of a blast of helium, and recording the temperature vs. time curve on an oscillograph. The apparatus used in the present experiments was very similar to that described by Greninger, except that the heating coil was made of molybdenum wire (0.040 in. in diam) and the assembly was placed in a bell jar under vacuum of 10" mm Hg or less. Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

The European Economic Community (The Common Market) is now shifting from I a coal oriented to an oil oriented economy. The proportion of energy supplied by oil has increased from only 13% in 1950 to 38% in 1962, and will approach 50% by 1970. In the past five years Common Market petroleum demand has in- creased 15% per year compared with only 3% per year in the United States. This rapid shift to oil can be explained by looking at oil's competition, First; there is simply not enough other energy - European coal, natural gas and hydro-electric power - to meet the demand, Secondly, oil?s primary competing energy in the Common Market is coal, and Community coal is high-priced - it costs more than two and a half times as much as U. S, coal at the pithead. The third reason for the shift to oil is consumer preference for the ease of handling, convenience and cleanliness of liquid fuels. As these reasons suggest, much of the shift to oil and the resulting growth in demand would have occurred whether or not the Common Market organization had existed. On the other hand, the Common Market has stimulated the use of oil by causing a higher rate of energy consumption, and oil has been the beneficiary of most of this growth.

BY the courtesy of Mr. Charles W. Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimens, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel ; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. Among those of the nonmetallic class may be mentioned graphite, soapstone, serpentine, ashes- * A branch or cross railroad is in operation as far as Walhalla ; but the single daily train runs at an hour not convenient for this expedition ; and Seneca City is probably the best starting-point. At all events, I obtained there an excellent mount for the trip.

Syria is a federation of States under French mandate , comprising the Republic of Syria , the Lebanese Republic or Great Lebanon ( Grand Liban ) , the State of the Alouites , and the Djebel Druse Territory . Beirut is the center of government for the whole area , about 60,000 square miles . Syria is essentially an agricultural country . There is little manufacturing ; and with the exception of the production of asphalt and salt , the mineral industries have not yet risen to commercial importance . Whether this condition is due to a dearth of workable deposits or merely to insufficient exploration is not apparent . The mineral resources , as reported by various authorities , include asbestos , asphalt rock , bitumen , chromite , coal , copper , gold , gypsum , iron , lead , magnesite , manganese , marble and other building stones , nickel , ocher , pandermite ( a hydrous borate of calcium) , petroleum , phosphate rock , pyrite , salt , silver , sulphur , tin , and titanium ( ilmenitic beach sands ) .

Analyses of samples of crude oil from fields in West Texas have been published from time to time in Bureau of Mines reports.3/ Analyses of 100 samples of crude oil from West Texas) collected during 1946 to 1952) are presented in this report. The production of crude oil from the fields in this portion of Texas totaled 381,129,000 barrels4/ during 1951 - an amount greater than that of any previous year. Total cumulative production of this area through 1951 was 2,792,692,000 barrels.5/ Table 1 gives monthly production figures for 1951 and yearly totals for the preceding 10 years (1942-1951) [ ]

Although fracture intersections and "domes" seem at a number of places to be the basic structural combination for the occurrence of a mining district, of the porphyry-copper type particularly, this situation is, of course, not always to be expected. For instance, the group of mines comprising Superior, Ray, Miami, Globe, Christmas appeared from the beginning of these structural studies as typical exceptions, and there are others. One had to expect additional parameters to allow for any mineral concentration to occur. One of these apparent parameters is here considered. From the result of stratigraphic studies related to ancient formations in Southeast Arizona, the Martin limestone (Devonian in age) was retained as having a possible relationship with the structure-economic studies in progress, as evidenced for instance by the mineralized O'Carroll bed located at the base of the Martin. This limestone formation has been rather extensively investigated in the past and there are many known sample localities. For this work, the isopach map was drawn by computer to insure more objectivity and, in addition to the available data points, a number of dummy points with a zero value were added around the assumed form-

• A new curriculum for combined liberal arts-engineering education has been announced by 6 middle western colleges. The plan involves three years of ;study at one of the 5 liberal arts colleges and two years and a summer of 'engineering work at Case; graduates receive both the A.B. and B.S. degrees. * A new kind of mining is being pioneered by a pest Virginia coal operator which enables four men to produce 800 tons of coal a day. The machine that makes this possible is a giant auger, 5 ft in diam and 100 ft long. Together with the carriage in which it is moved about, it weighs 60 tons. A mobile, but separate power plant of 1000 hp drives it. ' * The Sorel smelter, which will reduce Allard Lake titanium ores, will utilize five 6-electrode rectangular electric furnaces. Furnace hearth size will be about 18x50 ft, and the furnace will smelt about 300 tons of ore per day, producing 100 tons of iron and 130 tons of 70 pct Ti02 slag. The furnaces will be fed continuously by gravity from charge bins, and tap at intervals of 4 hr or more. Slag will be transferred to a high speed casting machine, using cast iron molds, then crushed for shipment to pigment producers. The iron will be treated to reduce its sulphur content to 0.03 to 0.05 pct, and then cast into small pigs or ingots for shipment to steel mills. • Flying of North Africa's first airborne mangetometer survey was completed this month, covering approximately 20,000 sq km in north central Tunisia for Gulf Exploration Co.'s program there. Mapping was completed in less than 30 days. •Yore than 9000 employees of 11 electric companies are enrolled in a 6-hr program that successfully informs workers on the principles of the American economic system. The course is given by the Middle West Service Co. which claims that before and after employee opinion polls show that the course instilled a better understanding of free enterprise and consequently a favorable response to it. •According to a report issued by the American Geological Institute there will be 2865 graduates in geology, including advanced degrees from U.S. colleges in 1950. This supply of geologists compares with requirements for 1278 at the professional and subprofessional levels. The report contains a detailed statistical study of the supply and demand situation for geologists in the 1949-50 period. •The dark cloud of over-production in the bituminous coal industry has a silver lining, according to Natural Resources Notes. Closing marginal mines, mostly strip and truck mines, will result in lower average costs and higher quality of the coal still produced. The producers that will then constitute the industry will be properly equipped and adequately financed to carry forward an intensive campaign to holdd and increase the markets for bituminous coal. •A light, compact, highly reliable blasting machine which does not rely for its effectiveness on the operator's skill is being tested by the Army Engineers. Operating under all climatic conditions from -65 to 125F, the 50-cap machine consists of a springwound do generator and is waterproof.

Biological treatment of mining and industrial effluents reached full scale commercialization around 1980. These proven, low cost, technologies have been limited in application due to a number of factors, including extended periods of time and cost required for pilot testing as compared to chemical treatment technologies, lack of biological expertise in metallurgical personnel, longer treatment periods in some cases, and performance failures based on improper application. Renewed interest in biological treatment technologies is being driven by permits with lower effluent concentration criteria, permits with bioassay evaluation, the need to remove thiocyanate, nitrates, sulfates and? other parameters. Chemical treatment processes, in general, have not been able to meet these present requirements, or require elaborate? combinations of processes, in terms of effluent quality and treatment economics. This paper addresses biologieal treatment of mining and industrial waste waters and selected recent advances in these technologies. The future looks very bright for application of these low capital and operating cost technologies,

When a mixture of chalcopyrite concentrate and lime is heated in air, the following reaction takes place: 2CuFeS2 + 4Ca (OH)2 + 8 ½ 02 ; 2Cu0 + Fe203 + 4CaS04 + 4H20. Ca (OH)2 is the only common reagent that will adequately control SO2 evolution in roasting. Other additives tried, including CaO, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaOH, MgO, Mg (OH)2, and MgCO3, were not effective. All reacted with sulfur, but not to the extent that will be required to meet the new control regulations for sulfur oxide emissions. For example: when the concentrate was heated with the theoretical amount of limestone (CaCO3), about 55% of the sulfur was retained in the calcine; whereas use of the stoichiometric amount of Ca (OH), converted approximately 99% of the sulfur to CaSO1. In most of the experiments, Ca(OH)2 was formed by adding CaO to concentrates containing enough water to simulate filter cake from flotation circuit. This eliminated the need for drying the concentrate and utilized the heat of hydration of CaO.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that uses gravitational force to mine massive, steeply dipping and deep-seated ore deposits at lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. As caving is a dynamic process, designing an effective ventilation system is challenging; therefore, estimating the airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

[Introduction] Section 122 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, Public Law 9595, directed the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, to review all relevant information and determine whether emissions of radioactive pollutants into ambient air will cause or contribute to air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health. In August 1979, EPA published a preliminary report on assessments of public health impact resulting from emissions of radionuclides into air from a broad spectrum of major source categories (1). A section of this document presented a theoretical analysis of the radioactive airborne emissions from several non-uranium mines including iron, copper, zinc, clay, limestone, fluorspar, and phosphate. Since 1978 EPA's Las Vegas Laboratory has been gathering field data on actual radionuclide emissions from these mines to support the earlier theoretical analysis. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of those field measurements in comparison with the assumed values for the theoretical analysis. Data were presented in EPA's preliminary report on both gaseous radon-222 and particulate uranium-238 emissions from non-uranium mines. Most of the emissions data were rough estimates based upon the uranium content of the ore. Preliminary data from a few field studies were also used. Although both the theoretical and field studies by EPA were concerned with radon-222 and radioactive particulate emissions, this paper will concentrate only on the radon effluents. Radon from mines seems to have the greatest potential for possible health effects due to radiation. Data on particulate emissions are presented in other technical reports (2-5). [Theoretical Study] The theoretical emission data are presented in Table I. The estimates for the iron, zinc, and clay mines are based upon preliminary measurements taken by the Las Vegas laboratory. The estimates for the other mines were made assuming that 20% of the total radon-222 in the ore was released during the mining process and the radon release rate from the exposed ore surface was a factor of two greater than that resulting from mining. [ ] Dose assessments for radon from these mines were carried out using model facilities located on generic sites (1). The AIRDOS-II computer code (for estimating dispersion of airborne pollutants) with some minor modifications was used to determine working level exposures to a maximally exposed individual and a regional population. A conversion factor for risk/WL-year(O.021 fatal cancers/person-WL-y) was developed primarily from information on uranium miner exposures (6). This computer code and conversion factor were then applied to the assumed emission rate of radon-222 from each type of mine to develop estimates of working levels, lifetime risks and number of fatal cancers. A summary of this data is presented in table II. [ ] The highest estimated number of cancer deaths per year of operation is 0.05 cancer deaths or 1.0 death due to radon during the 24 year life of a phosphorous mine. For comparison, EPA estimates that underground uranium mines would cause .03 cancer deaths per year of operation in a regional population(1). [Field Study] As a followup to the theoretical study, EPA's Las Vegas laboratory began making measurements in 1978 of actual emissions of radon-222 and radioactive particulates from mine vents at several facilities for each of the industries listed in Table I and II. They were intended to verify general information and radon emissions from EPA's theoretical estimates.

A well-defined geometric model for a mineral system and its liberation by size reduction is used to show the relationship between true volumetric particle composition and the composition estimates obtained by the measurement of linear intercepts or areas of simulated polished sections of particles. Based on this information, a transformation is developed between the areal measurements and the volumetric composition for this idealized mineral system. This paper will be of interest to those who are actually developing a mineral prospect or planning to do so, as well as to investors who are considering the problem of financing the development of the prospect, so that they may know what the risks are and what capital expenditures are necessary before a prospect may become a mine. The term "prospect" used broadly, as it is in this paper, is defined as any property that has a mineral showing of sufficient interest to warrant development, irrespective of prior work, Such previous exploration, however, may be extensive and consist of several tunnels or adits connected by raises, or of shafts with several levels. There may also be a small mining and milling plant on the prospect which, because of the lack of capital for development or the lack of markets for the products, is now idle. Such prospects may warrant further capital investment for development work or for a mine plant to raise to the stage of profitable production.

"IT IS NOT necessary here to dwell on the fact that sulphur is currently in short supply. It may be well, however, to •point out that this •storage is not merely a temporary condition, but that, judging by trends in world consumption of sulphur, it may •be anticipated that requirements will double in the next ten years.Even with improved techniques for mining elemental sulphur in the United States and the new finds in Louisiana, there is much concern as to how these future sulphur requirements can be met. It appears necessary to .turn more and more to other sources than elemental sulphur for •additional production. The three major alternative sources were:(1) By-product sulphuric acid •from smelter gases.(2) Sulphur and sulphuric acid from iron sulphides.(3) Sulphur from hydrogen sulphide contained in natural gas. The Jumping Pound sulphur plant of the Shell Oil Company of Canada, Limited, is designed to produce sulphur by the •third of these methods.Jumping Pound is a natural gas field about 20 miles west of Calgary where Shell has a number of producing wells."

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) adopted its Clean Water Plan (CWP) in May 2020, as part of a federal consent decree to comply with the USEPA’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Policy. Planned improvements include constructing a new regional storage/conveyance tunnel system, promoting green infrastructure/ source control, and expanding the treatment plant. Preliminary planning for the tunnel system was completed in October 2020. The Ohio River Tunnel (ORT) project is the first of three tunnel projects that make up the regional tunnel system. The ORT project began final design in 2021. This paper discusses the advancements made to the ORT preliminary planning concepts considering property availability, alignment optimization, tunnel boring machine evaluation, contract packaging and delivery schedules.
