The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors again sends out this recommendation: If you have an air compressor that is mounted directly on the air tank, get it off. Characteristically, small- to intermediate-sized air receivers are thin-walled vessels, and as such are prone to failure when subjected to external loading. Many of these vessels, if not a great majority, are bought by a distributor of air compressor systems, who provides the compressor, motor, switchgear and other accoutrements-all of which are very frequently mounted on a base which is then welded to the shell of the receiver. These welds at the points of attachment transmit external loading to the tank in the form of weight and vibration, frequently resulting in stress-induced cracks.

In recent years, the microscope has come to be recognized as a valuable aid to engineers whose business is the discovery, development, concentration or reduction of metallic ores. In many of the large treatment plants microscopical research has already an important status; and in the hands of efficient operators the microscope has indicated methods of solving ore problems resulting in the saving of thousands of dollars that otherwise might have been lost in tailings, or expended in freight rates or smelter charges. Failure to procure all the information that the microscope can supply concerning the physical and mineralogical characteristics of complex ores has in many cases led to the construction of unsuitable concentrators, just as the failure to investigate in detail the geological conditions of an ore deposit has often results in the squandering of money on shaft sinking, and mechanical installations which subsequent development of the deposit failed to justify. The great progress recently made in the selective separation of minerals by means of the various processes of flotation and leaching brings strongly to our attention, the scope of the field in which microscopical methods may be advantageously employed. The microscope enables one to observe the minute details of rock, ore, gangue, concentrate, tailing, matte, slag and metal, that are invisible to the naked eye. Furthermore, the technique of microscopal research has been so highly developed that a microscopist can not only observe, but deter-mine the compositions and measure the diameters of the mineral constituents in the ore to be treated. Magnifications of these constituents up to 3,000 diameters may be produced by the proper combination of eyepiece, objective, and projection apparatus, and the images thus viewed may be photographed through the microscope, and permanent records made of them.

A rapid analysis method for silica (quartz) mass using direct-on-filter Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been developed, which can also estimate kaolinite, a primary silicate mineral in many coal mines.

Since its invention by Professor Klaus Schonert of the University of Clausthal, Germany, high pressure rolls comminution has attained near total acceptance as the preferred method of size reduction in the cement industry. Over 300 units have been manufactured worldwide. At locations where the system has been installed, considerable energy savings have been realised. These energy savings are generally in the range of 20 to 30 per cent compared to conventional ball mill circuits. However up to 50 per cent power saving has been achieved at some installations. This technology, with the exception of the diamond industry, has up to now had only limited success in ore processing. This has mainly been attributable to the abrasiveness of ores encountered in this industry leading to high wear rates. These high wear rates have given rise to an unacceptably short life time of the wear surface of the rolls, requiring regular replacement. A new wear surface has been developed which has shown to give a ten-fold increase in service life over conventional surfaces. This, together with developments made in machine design now give the units the ability to attain the high availabilities demanded by the mining industry, and therefore to allow this industry to achieve the considerable operating cost savings offered by the high pressure rolls.

Miners really are an optimistic bunch. Even with the dark clouds hanging over the global industry, mining professionals still turn out in droves at industry conferences. In February, more than 7,200 professionals attended SME?s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, a record. And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. For many small and junior mining and exploration companies the PDAC conference is a place to find potential investors in their projects. Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts or bumps continue to occur. Many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams that are associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous efforts are required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines. In this study, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs) technique was performed to better understand the true anisotropic behavior of the specimens acquired from a bump-prone underground coal mine. The spatial characteristics of the dis- continuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) as input data for the 3DEC model are estimated based on the results of the laboratory tests and field observations. The DFNs explicitly generated the coal seam that was poorly or well cleated, indicating the different spacing between cleat apertures using the probability distribution functions for fracture density (or frequency) and size. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) are also considered by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results of laboratory tests using the 3DEC model and DFNs technique agreed well with the results of the laboratory tests. These calibrated results can be used as we seek to evaluate bump risk by modeling at field scale.

This paper call attention to increasing ratio of oxygen depletion from atmosphere besides the global worries about CO2 concentration increase in the atmosphere. It highlights the big mistake in considering Carbon Capture and Storage, CCS, as a way to reduce the increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. As a hypothetical example it presents an existing pseudo-ecosystem of manufacturing that has real windows of opportunity to increase its share in the global materials production industry, even in highly industrialized countries. As a suggestion and example the author point out possibilities to almost fulfill the proposed simple rules to be considered inside an ecosystem of manufacturing utilizing the production of steel via biomass versus fossil coal. A relevant and difficult rule to be attained in a quasi-ecosystem of manufacture is to be a near zero atmosphere oxygen depletion integrated process. The industrial alternatives that utilizes the actual photosynthesis are the ones that can reach a higher ecosystem of manufacture’s index. It is presented an ideal integrated steelmaking process where the gaseous, liquids and solid residues generated in one part of the system are or can be utilized in the other parts of the same system. A potential ecosystem of manufacture to produce primary iron is illustrated in the paper.

At that time information about the new developments in the peculiar brown hematites of the region was becoming widely circulated and interest was especially keen. For some years exploration had been conducted with pits and trenches and so great an area had been shown to contain ore in the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas or San Felipe districts, that the reserves conveniently situated for the consumption of American furnaces were estimated as quite two billions of tons. The heat capacity of dimo1ybdenum carbide (Mo2C) was measured from 51° to 298° K, and the entropy at 298.15° K was evaluated. Heat content measurements above 298.15° It were conducted for dimolybdenum carbide (M0caY) and monotantalum carbide (TaC). The results were combined with known heats of formation and the 298.15° K entropy for TaC to obtain values of the heat and free energy of formation from 298.15° K to 1,400° K for MoaC and from 298.15°K to 1,800° K for TaC.

The determination of manganese by precipitation with potassium chlorate from a solution in concentrated nitric acid, filtration through asbestos, and solution in a reducing agent whose excess is estimated, is open to the objections that the filtration and subsequent solution of the binoxide are apt to be very slow, and that the asbestos may (according to Troilius), unless perfectly purified, affect the titration. In the following modification, filtration is avoided. I give the method as I use it for Bessemer steel. In an 8-ounce Griffen beaker dissolve 1 gramme drillings in 15 c.c. nitric acid (1.2 sp. gr.). Evaporate to 5 c.c.; add 20 c.c. concentrated nitric acid and precipitate with chlorate as usual, avoiding a large excess; then add about 60 c.c. warm water, and 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution; stir until of a clear light yellow color, and titrate with permanganate while the solution is at about 80' C. The binoxide should dissolve immediately when the oxalate isadded. The titration is rapid, and the end-reaction, though transient, easily caught after a little practice. The standard solutions used are: 15 grammes crystallized ammonium oxalate to a liter, and 1.6 grarnmes potassium permanganate to a liter. For standardizing the permanganate, to 10 c.c. of the oxalic solution is added 50 c.c. of hot water, and a solution of 1 gratnme of steel in concentrated nitric acid, from which the manganese has been removed by potassium chlorate and filtration through asbestos. The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping methodology has been used to study the reactions of manganese dusts with glutathione, employing a-{4-pyridyl-1-oxide)·N-tert-butyl-nitrone (PBN) and 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as spin traps. The results show evidence for the glutathionyl radical formation in the reactions of both MnO2 and manganese (Ill) acetate with glutathione. Based on these experimental observations, we hypothesise that the mechanism of neurotoxic effects of manganese might be due to the fact that the generation of glutathionyl radicals depletes the glutathione pool and reduces the glutathione shield against free radical products of dopamine metabolism and manganese induced reactive oxygenated species. IntroductionExposure to manganese compounds often occurs as the result of foundries and mining operations (1. 2). Other significant sources of environmental manganese include coal-fired power plants and burning of residual and crude oil (3, 4). Lately gasoline combustion has also started to contribute since manganese (methyl cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl. 0. 125 g/gallon) is being used instead of lead as an antiknock ingredient in automobile fuels (5. 6). Although manganese is an essential element in certain biological processes it is toxic in excessive amounts. The manganese toxicity is mainly associated with the nervous system (7-9). Symptoms frequently observed in manganese poisoning or manganism are disorientation, memory loss, anxiety, compulsive laughing and crying, mask-like faces, akincsia rigidity and tremor (10). In spite of numerous investigations to understand the mechanism of manganese induced injury. it has not been possible to localize the initial chemical lesion responsible for altered physiology and ultimate cell death. This may perhaps he the reason for failure in developing a successful therapy for manganese intoxication."

An improved technique has been developed for the deoxidation of palladium with aluminum which is especially suitable for use in making small castings with an induction-melting and casting machine. The effect of various crucible linings on the efficiency of the residual deoxidizer and accompanying oxide film in protecting palladium against oxidation during remelting also has been examined; the preferred crucible lining consists of zirconia cement. THE objective of this work was to develop a simple method of deoxidizing induction-melted palladium which would be suitable for use by manufacturers of jewelry and other small castings. In a common method of deoxidizing torch-melted palladium a piece of aluminum foil is dropped on the surface of the molten metal. If a film is present, which is usually the case, it must first be removed by oxidizing the molten metal thoroughly because it would interfere with the entry of the aluminum into the melt. Removal of the film is probably facilitated by a mild fluxing action of the silica crucibles which are used for torch-melting. However, removal of an alumina film from molten palladium in the crucibles normally used for induction melting is a much slower process and it became necessary to modify the de-oxidation procedure. In the modified procedure the charge is simply melted and the desired amount of aluminum, crimped to one end of a tungsten wire, is plunged through the film into the palladium and the wire immediately withdrawn. The trace of tungsten which dissolves along with the aluminum can be avoided, if considered objectionable, by using a palladium wire. In view of the persistence of the alumina film under the conditions of induction-melting it also was decided to ascertain the efficiency of this film in protecting palladium against oxidation during repeated remelting and casting. Melting Equipment and Materials The equipment used for melting and casting consisted of an Ecco GC:6, 6 to 8-kva high-frequency converter and an Ecco M34B centrifugal casting machine. This unit is being increasingly used for making jewelry and dental castings and it also has been found useful in making exploratory melts of a variety of nickel alloys, for which purpose it is well suited on account of its speed of melting and economy of material. A description of the machine and its operation will be published elsewhere.' A common palladium jewelry alloy, 95.5 palladi-um-4.5 ruthenium (referred to as "palladium" in the trade), was selected for the deoxidation tests. It was available as melting stock which had been melted in air to free it from oxidizable impurities, and also as clean scrap from previous melts which had been deoxidized with aluminum. The latter was thought to be typical of clean "palladium" scrap to be found in a manufacturing jeweler's establishment and it is also similar to one brand of "casting palladium." By the same token, the oxidized melting stock corresponds to "casting palladium" after the latter has been melted and thoroughly oxidized: Pure aluminum wire (99.9 pet), 0.032 in. diam; 1 in. = 0.036 g. Scrap tungsten wire, 0.014 to 0.020 in. diam. Argon, commercial water-pumped; 99.9 pet pure Experimental Procedure Samples of about 50 to 75 g of the palladium alloy were melted in a crucible lined with a proprietary refractory alumina cement. Some charges were melted in air, others in argon. The oxidized melting stock was melted and solidified a number of times in order to remove as much oxygen as possible before deoxidizing, but this treatment was unnecessary in the case of scrap. In open pit mining, ore and waste are hauled outside of the excavation area by trucks that move along a system of ramps. The design of these ramps must be carefully addressed because they have to comply with geomechanical constraints to ensure the stability of the pit walls, provide access to the different levels and phases, but also maximise the value of the extracted ore and reduce the extraction of waste. Because an optimisation approach able to deal with the design of the full ramp system seems to be out of reach at the moment, this paper addresses the problem of designing one ramp providing access to a single pushback, which has been determined beforehand. The optimisation objective is therefore to find a ramp that gives access to one given potential volume, while minimising its impact on the economic value of the volume. Two versions of the problem are formalised. One version allows the extraction of ore and waste only if this extraction is necessary for the ramp system. This version somehow minimises the intrinsic value of the ramp system. In the second version, it is possible to extract more than is needed by the ramp system. For instance, this takes into account the possibility of attaining ore on the wall opposite to the ramp as soon as the ramp reaches its level. In the setting mentioned above, the contribution of this work is three-fold. First, the computational complexity of the two different versions of the problem is presented and discussed; in particular, they are shown to be NP-hard. Second, compact integer programs modelling these two versions are proposed. Third, an efficient GRASP algorithm able to cope with the large instances of the problem is proposed. To assess the proposed approaches, the models and algorithms are applied to real instances with an off-the-shelf solver, illustrating and discussing their potential and relevance for the two versions of the problem. They are also compared with other approaches from the literature in terms of value and resulting designs.

The natural emulsion samples used in this study were shipped directly from twelve California oil fields, through the courtesy of the superintendents of the main producing companies in those fields. Representative parts of each sample were chosen for the slides. Preparation of the slides was generally made in less than two minutes, including time of exposure; in a few cases, about five minutes was required. The short time was intended to minirmize the changes in conditions. Whenever comparison was of value, standard conditions were established. Spreading by gravity was adopted instead of smearing. Cover glasses were not allowed to rest on the films. General Characteristics of Emulsions The main purpose of the general views (Figs. 1-16) is to illustrate the general characteristics of the dispersed droplets together with any other constituent or impurity that may be found in each emulsion. The magnification is given so that dimensions could be measured from the plates. The slides used for these views had spherical recesses; they gave the best light. Where crystals were intended to be shown in the picture a filter (green was the best') was usually used. Emulsions that showed a tendency to move by concentrated light were pictured without a condenser.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. The effect of changing redox potential (Eh) on the high temperature sulfuric acid leaching of Western Australian dry-land nickel laterite ores has been investigated. In particular, the effect of added reductant (sulfur, sodium sulfite) or oxidant (potassium chromate) on Eh, leaching kinetics, metal extractions, acid utilisation and leach residues has been determined. Three separate ores - nonhonitic ores from Murrin Mumn and Bulong, and limonitic ore from Cawse - were used in the study. Sulfur addition varied from 0 to 7.8 kg/t ore. The total acid loading was kept constant at 430 kg/t (Murrin Murrin ore) and 330 kglt (Cawse ore), whilst acid loading for Bulong ore was varied according to the presence of either reductant or oxidant. The extraction of both nickel and cobalt from limonite ore remained unaffected when small amounts of sulfkr were added, but addition of even small amounts of reductant to nontronitic ore decreased both nickel and cobalt extraction. Increased manganese and iron dissolution were observed as the levels of reductant increased, accompanied by a decrease in chromium dissolution. As the iron dissolution increased, free acidity decreased, with a subsequent decrease in nickel extraction. In contrast, addition of oxidant lead to reduced iron and manganese dissolution and slower extraction of nickel and cobalt. Keywords: Limonite, Nonhonite, Eh, Nickel Extraction
