"Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

AUSTENITE grain size has long been recognized by metallurgists as an important property of steels because of its influence on toughness, hardenability, machinability and creep strength. Much research has been carried out on wrought steels to develop methods for disclosing austenite grain size, and to provide knowledge of the grain-size -characteristics of steels produced and heat-treated in various ways. Much less work in these fields has been done on steel castings; partly because, owing to the variable and complex microstructures of cast steels, it is frequently very difficult to obtain results that are not questionable. The object of this investigation, therefore, was to establish, for a wide variety of carbon and alloy cast steels, suitable methods for disclosing austenite grain size and some knowledge of the grain-size variations to be expected. The steel foundryman is interested in austenite grain size at two different stages in the manufacture of his products; one is just after the steel is cast, and the other is after any reheating operation carried out above the critical temperature range. In both, it must always be kept in mind that the grain size being sought is actually a previous austenite grain size, and that the austenite no longer exists once the steel has cooled to room temperature. The problem of the investigator is always to use evidence obtained from the structure at room temperature to deduce this previous austenite grain size, which was established the last time the steel existed at a temperature above the critical range. Since most steel castings today are at least annealed or normalized, the measurement of austenite grain size established by heat-treatment will be considered first. More than So commercially produced cast steels representing a wide variety of compositions and melting practices were used in the study. For each steel, grain-size determinations were made after each of three widely varying heat-treating schedules; namely, one hour at 1550°F, one hour at 1700°F, and six hours at 1700°F. The list of steels and results obtained on them will be found in the appendix. (See page 21.) A discussion of the knowledge gained on the applicability of various test methods and on grain-size characteristics of cast steels in general follows. One of the dewatering methods in mineral processing plant is filtration system. Disk filters are included the porous surface with pressure drop on both sides, Water in the pulp passes through the surface and solid particles remain as a cake on it. Wet concentrate production of magnetite processing plant at Golgohar Mining and Industrial Company with solid tonnage of 160 ton per hour and 49% solid amount contains 166 m3/h of water. In the present study, in addition to studying disc filter performance, the effective parameters on cake moisture were studied using Vacuum Bottom-Feed Leaf method (in the laboratory scale). Optimization was performed using the Taguchi method. The results showed that the cake moisture is reduced by increasing particle size and solid percentage (because of specific resistivity reduction), while the rate of cake formation and its thickness are increased. Also, it was found that by increasing pressure, the cake moisture is reduced and cake formation rate and its thickness are increased. In this study, the effect of fabric texture was also examined. Lowest cake moisture was obtained in condition of using compressed plain fabric with mono-multi filament fibres, pressure at 75kPa, solid percentage of 65 to 70, particle size (D80) equivalent to 123µm and disk rotation speed of 1.25 rpm.

Para validar los beneficios del gas natural en la generación eléctrica de una operación minera, se realiza un análisis comparativo con la tecnología que actualmente se usa (diésel). Asimismo, aunque no se abordan a profundidad, se muestran otras posibilidades que existen con el uso de gas natural en sitios mineros.

"INTRODUCTION In 1942, Lowry and Junge 3/ reported the results of a statistical study of errors for the proximate and ultimate analysis of coal and coke when made according to the standard Methods of Laboratory Sampling and Analysis of Coal and Coke (D271-42) 4/ of the American Society for Testing Materials. Some of the laboratories that cooperated in the investigation reported difficulty with determination of the volatile matter of anthracite and low-temperature coke. The small number of analyses reported for these particular fuels was considered inadequate to justify definite conclusions regarding the precision of this determination.The investigation described in this report was made at the request of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, A.S.T.M. (A. C. Fieldner, chairman), to secure additional information regarding the errors of the volatile matter determination for anthracite, low-temperature coke, and subbituminous coal; the last fuel also gives trouble in this determination, The committee has recognized that the allowable differences between duplicate determinations of volatile matter for these fuels as given in the standard methods are perhaps too stringent and may require revision."

"The Red Dog Mine has increased mill throughput for most years since startup. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Late in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifylng the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, twentyone (21) Outokumpu OK50 mechanical flotation cells and four (4) 3.66m dia. column cells will be added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment and power issues and has a total budget of $US105 M. Startup of equipment will be phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and is expected to be complete by the end of Q3-2001.INTRODUCTIONRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the arctic circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred (100) days of open seas. Typical of sedimentary exhalative deposits, the metallurgy proved to be challenging and coupled with many mechanical shortcomings, the initial few years were very difficult. The start-up issues were slowly resolved and in 1998, a major grinding expansion, the PRI (Production Rate Increase) project, was completed. The project was designed to allow a 40% increase over the 1995 throughput. In 2000 mill throughput was 3,050,000 tonnes to produce a total of 960,000 and 140,000 dry tonnes of zinc and lead concentrates respectively, making Red Dog the largest zinc concentrate producer in the world. To address a shortage of flotation capacity remaining from the PRI grinding expansion, a project designated as the VIP (Value Improvement Program) Mill Optimization project was initiated. The mill optimization project is targeted to produce 1,100,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate at 56% zinc grade and 87% zinc recovery. The project will add twenty-one (21) Outokumpu OK50 (50m3) flotation cells, four (4) 3.66mO column cells and address water treatment, thickening and power generation capacities."

A ventilation system is described using dual aircourses: one zone occupied by working personnel, the other at the active working face. The two zones are separated by a partition or Shroud. The occupied zone to the rear of the face zone is ventilated adequately but with considerably less air because little gas, dust, or fumes are present. The face excavating zone is sealed and maintained at slightly more negative pressure preventing dust and gas generating from within to escape. Explosive mixtures within the face zone is rendered non-explosive by the introduction of inert gas therein. Each zone is vented separately to the outside of the mine. Because less total quantity of air is required for human breathing, etc, the total ventilation system can be drastically reduced in tan capacity, development entries, and air shafts, -- a great savings in costs.

Under a memorandum of agreement with Reynolds Metals Co., Richmond, VA, the Bureau of Mines studied the problem of corundum formation on refractory linings in aluminum recycling furnaces. A laboratory test was developed for evaluating refractories in contact with molten recycled aluminum and identifying the mechanism of corundum formation. A test apparatus was designed and constructed to evaluate the performance of refractory samples. Corundum mechanism formation studies indicated that corundum formed on refractories when there is metal penetration. Once corundum forms, it acts as a wick allowing the molten aluminum to move to the surface where it is oxidized, thus causing further growth of the corundum. Phosphoric acid treatment or a spinel mortar coating prevented corundum formation on the 70-and 90-pct-A1203 refractories.

Several works have been dedicated to study the ballistic response of multilayered armor systems (MAS), including those using natural fiber composites as second layer. These composites disclosed good ballistic performance, having economic and environmental advantages. In the present work, the objective was to investigate the effect of areal densities of each MAS layer, in the overall performance of a MAS with an alumina ceramic front, a curaua fabric reinforced composite filling, and an aluminum alloy backing the target. Ballistic “backface signature” tests were conducted, varying the areal densities of the MAS layers according to a Box-Behnken design. The results showed a similar influence of the ceramic and aluminum layers in the MAS “backface signatures”, although deformation and failure mechanisms were significantly different. The composite also showed significant participation in the overall MAS performance. Since the composite is cheaper and lighter, a balance minimizing the other layers would be advantageous.

In order to ascertain the environmental fate of flotation reagents (fatty acids, fuel oils, and amines) associated with phosphate rock processing with confidence, it was necessary to first establish laboratory methodologies to identify and quantify flotation reagents. This approach was necessitated by the fact that the reagents used in the flotation process are either reclaimed or by-products of other industries and is dictated by their cost. Initially, several blind performance evaluation samples were prepared by spiking water samples with known amounts of either single reagents or reagent mixes and then analyzed. Reagent recovery for the blind performance evaluation samples was within acceptable limits for similar compounds established by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Averification process involving the use of standards and the refinement of analytical methods was utilized to develop standard operat- ing procedures (SOPS) and method detection limits (MDLs) specific to the identification and quantification of the flotation reagents used in the phosphate industry. These procedures and MDLs were critical to support the project's primary goal of assessing the fate of selected flotation reagents in the environment.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. Deposit-10/11A is situated in the iron rich Bailadila region of India comprising haematite ore of average grade 65 per cent Fe. The deposit production line was commissioned in the year 2002 having a capacity of 5 Mt/a. The plant has the state of the art mineral processing equipments.The ore is transported from mines to crushing plant by means of dumpers. The ore is comminuted in two stages to get 150 mm top size product and this product is transported through conveyor system and is stored in silos as feed stock for beneficiation plant. In the beneficiation plant this crushed product is wet screened in two stages to produce a product of lump (-150 + 10 mm) and fines (-10 + 3.15 mm). The product of -3.15 mm top size is fed to primary classifier for a size separation at 150 µm. The resultant product (-3.15 mm + 150 µm) is dewatered and transported to fi ne ore product stock yard through conveyor system. The minus 150 µm material from classifier overflow is fed to cyclones (508 mm cyclone battery with an apex of 65 mm) for desliming at 45 µm and to recover ultrafi nes (-150 + 45 µm). The cyclone overfl ow slimes (-45 µm) along with water is treated in lamella thickeners to recover process water. The thickener underflow material is transported to tailing pond (discharge rate is 300 m3/h at a specific gravity of 1.4) by pumping through HDPE (high density poly ethylene) pipeline and the over flow water is being recirculated. The water requirement for beneficiation is approx 1.5 m3 per ton of ore.This paper aims at identifying and quantifying the factors that affect the overall plant performance (grade and recovery) during the different seasonal variations especially in the rainy season (mid-June to end October). The effect of seasonal variations on unit operations such as milling, classification, thickening and filtration are discussed. Specific cases are presented as examples and recommendations are formulated.

This study revealed significantly less favorable perceptions of the existing organizational safety climate among workers in the underground coal-mining sector compared with those in the industrial-minerals and sand, stone and gravel (SSG) sectors. Consequently, it is important to consider pragmatic ways in which health and safety management systems (HSMS) in coal mines can alter processes to improve these perceptions. Given the interdependencies of safety climate factors and HSMS elements, researchers explored mineworker perceptions of the supportiveness of organizational safety climate factors among mineworkers and identified significant differences in perceptions across sectors. In this paper, we suggest that health and safety professionals in underground coal mining and organizations with fewer resources or less mature HSMSs focus on these factors to bolster support for proactive safety performance. Potential barriers to implementing or improving relevant HSMS elements and ideas to help foster more favorable perceptions of organizational safety climate are also discussed.

The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the Bureau of Mines to be 1,040 Bcf as of January 1, 1987. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas reserves, 265 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 228 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated to be 320 Bcf, and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, 227 Bcf. These helium resources are further divided into depleting and nondepleting, with the helium in storage being in a separate classification. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gasfields that are, or will be, produced for the natural gas they contain. Almost all of the helium in potential (probable, possible, and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 951 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, i.e., those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gasfields, are estimated to total 53 Bef. There is 36 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government-owned Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX.

AN OIL and gas mining lease contract, as entered A into by and between 'the lessor and the lessee, contains certain express covenants stipulating, in part at least, the exact performance thereof; it also contains certain implied covenants, among which may be included that of protection of the leased premises against drainage by the drilling of necessary offset wells. In the drilling for, and production of, oil and gas, however, it not infrequently happens that the lessee, acting in good faith, does not deem it prudent to, drill a test thereon even though the location for such test is offset by a producing well on an adjoining lease. Such conclusion, on the part of the lessee, is generally construed by the lessor as constituting a breach of the implied covenant mentioned above, and he may take proper action to secure satisfaction therefor. The action against the lessee is generally for cancellation or relinquishment of the lease, together with, or apart from, claims for damages allegedly sustained through failure to properly protect against drainage of the leased premises.

Recently there has been an unprecedented marketing effort to promote the advantages of various non-electric initiation systems. This activity has probably been influenced by a major manufacturer's decision to discontinue electric detonator production. Subsequently, distributors of explosive materials, rather than introducing new electric detonator brands, are emphasizing the use of existing non-electric systems. In many cases, such methods fill the need of explosive users in the quarry industry. However, the use of any initiation system should be based on performance, rather than the bent of the market or convenience to the supplier. This analysis is an evaluation of the performance of non-electric systems with emphasis on double trunk line and loop (redundant), as compared to precise electric detonators in use by Martin Marietta. Redundant non-electric detonators, even though more costly, offer the most reliable method of non-electric initiation. However, state-of-the-art precise electric detonators give the best overall performance, except in an environment involving extraneous electricity.

Removal of toxic anions from aqueous solution was studied using a Magnetic Ion Exchange (MIEX) resin which is a polyacrylic, strong base resin. Gravity based settling is made more efficient due to the magnetic nature of the resin which is advantageous over conventional ion exchange resins. In addition, the magnetic microspheres of MIEX have larger surface area in comparison to conventional ion exchange resins. Over the years MIEX has been successfully used and has gained significant popularity for efficiently removing dissolved organic matter from wastewater and groundwater. In the present study the efficiency of the MIEX resin was tested for the removal of chromium(VI), molybdenium(VI), vanadium(V) and arsenic(V) anions. Effects of pH (2-10) and temperature (25oC-55oC) were examined. In general, low solution pH values were favorable for anion uptake by MIEX. Except for chromium(VI), the metal ion uptake was significantly increased by the increase in solution temperature. The adsorption data were analysed on the basis of chemical speciation and heterogeneous kinetic models.

The federal standard for limiting exposures to miners from radon daughters was reduced from 12 working level months (WLM) per year to 4 WLM per year in 1971. However, even at that time some researchers were concerned that the new limit would eventually be shown to result in an excess risk for lung cancer mortality in miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is now engaged in a comprehensive review of this topic. As the lead agency in this project, NIOSH has developed a work plan and established a work group to implement this plan. The procedure and specific considerations are outlined in the work plan for developing a comprehensive ionizing radiation standard recommendation for all miners, underground and surface. Such a recommendation will not only include estimates of health risks at various levels of exposure, but also appropriate recommendations for medical monitoring, sampling and analytical methods, sampling strategies, posting, engineering controls, personal protective equipment and recordkeeping. The work group has twenty-four members. Eleven members are NIOSH personnel representing six divisions of the Institute. The remaining thirteen members represent other federal agencies, specifically the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor, the Office of Radiation Protection of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Several factors contributed to the decision to initiate this project. First, the efficacy of the current standard was considered. An initial study group was formed in the spring of 1980 by NIOSH to identify and evaluate articles that contained information on lung cancer mortality risks at and below the present permissible exposure limit. The conclusion drawn from their evaluation was that a two-fold excess risk of lung cancer mortality at and below 120 cumulative working level months (CWLM) of exposure to radon daughters is evident. This composite indication from selected studies was of sufficient magnitude to justify further evaluation. The study group, however, recognized that other studies and information must also be considered in a quantitative risk assessment which would form the basis for recommending an acceptable and feasible permissible exposure limit. A second factor in the decision to pursue further evaluation was the gaps in the current standard that had previously been identified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These included lack of medical monitoring of underground miners and absence of regulations for surface miners. The seriousness of the health hazard relative to other hazards in mining was also considered. Along with exposures to silica and asbestos fibers, radiation was judged to be one of the major health hazards in mining, These combined factors constituted the justification to develop criteria and recommendations for improved mandatory health standards. The development process begins with a survey and review of the available world-wide information on the topic, including data and information developed by NIOSH. The end product of this review is to be a document that will contain an evaluation of the collected information and support for any recommendations that are made. To develop this document, the present work group has been divided into five task groups with the following emphases: Health Effects, Medical Aspects, Monitoring, Environmental Exposures, and Engineering Controls and Work Practices. The Health Effects task group is to evaluate the evidence from epidemiologic and animal studies of adverse health effects associated with all forms of ionizing radiation encountered in mining and milling operations. The "weight-of-evidence" of the results of all relevant and useful studies will be summarized, with the reasons for emphasizing the cited studies. The critical cells or tissues and the factors that should be considered in estimating the dose to these areas from various types of radiation will be identified. An evaluation will be made of the possible impacts of smoking and exposure to diesel exhaust on the determination of health effects related to radiation. The implications of biologically redundant dose in terms of the time between tumor initiation and death will also be analyzed. The Medical Aspects task group is to review the generally-accepted and the state-of-the-art medical technology for the detection of adverse health effects from ionizing radiation exposure. An evaluation will be made of the accuracy of urine and fecal analysis, wholebody counting, chromosome analysis and nose blows, as well as their usefulness for early detection of adverse health effects. Early detection is of little utility to the affected individual unless subsequent medical care can improve the prognosis. Recommendations for screening tests will be made after carefully considering the accuracy of the diagnostic procedures and the usefulness of early detection. Required recordkeeping and transfer rights will also be addressed. The Monitoring task group is to consider the state-of-the-art technology for the monitoring of occupational radiation exposures. Instrumentation, sampling strategies and analytical procedures will be reviewed for both personal and area sampling. The implications of the associated levels of confidence for non-compliance decisions will be evaluated. Over the last three decades, the mining industry has been moving towards underground mechanized mining methods and the number of load haul dump (LHD) vehicles utilized has increased. The growth of mechanization and automation has benefited both workers and mining companies. However, due to the design constraints with LHD vehicles and the limitations of the operating environment, restrictions to operator visibility has contributed to a number of accidents, including fatal injuries. Past researchers have used the light filament technique to collect obscuration zones around mobile equipment and have produced 2D visibility charts (shadow diagrams) of this information. The light filament method involves manually collecting visibility data, which results in errors and is time consuming, requiring around three hours to complete. This research utilizes a MENSI GS100 laser scanner along with 3D modelling software (3Dipsos) to collect and process operator visibility profiles for underground mobile equipment. Results from this test work indicate that a laser scanner can be successfully used to rapidly collect this data and utilize this information for improved mobile equipment design from a visibility perspective.
