I have availed myself of the opportunity to prepare, and to give this talk because, as incumbent Chairman, I am directed by the Bylaws of the Council of Education to make an Annual Report of the Council activities which have transpired during the past year. In addition, and inasmuch as I have this captive audience, I am taking the liberty to express also some beliefs I hold about various other elements of Mineral Industry education. First, my report is that constructive progress has been achieved in the Council of Education during 1960-61. These advancements have been particularly notable through projects carried on by the Committee on Meetings and Programs, by the Student Chapters Committee, by the Accrediting Affairs Committee and by the Committee for Securing Better Representation of Mineral Industry Colleges. I believe each of these groups will report concerning details of their respective programs at the Business Meeting of the Council. On the other hand, not as much has been done in some areas of work as I had hoped would be the case when I took office as Chairman last February. Let me make clear that these delinquencies, for the most part, have resulted through my ineptness in handling of affairs; they are not caused by the failure to perform various assignments which I have given to council members.

Lower workers' dust exposures during bag stacking while ergonomically improving the bag stacking process. Approach Install a new pallet loading dust control system which uses a push-pull ventilation technique along with a hydraulic lift table to control the pallet loading height throughout the entire loading cycle. How It Works A low-volume, high-velocity blower system operating at approximately at 120 cfm blows a stream of air over the top layer of bags on the pallet. The blower system is composed of two 3-inch air jets (approximately 1,200-ft/min velocity) directed toward an exhaust system on the opposite side of the pallet. As these air jets travel across the pallet, they en-train dust generated during bag stacking. The dust laden air is then captured by the exhaust ventilation system which draws approximately 2,500 cfm through an exhaust hood on the opposite side of the pallet.

"When mineral particles are floated in a mechanical flotation cell, it is found that the rate constant, after reaching a maximum value, starts to decline as particle size increases. It had been thought that the reduction in rate constant had been due to the increased prevalence of composite particles in natural ores, for larger particles. However, Jameson (2012) showed that the rate constant for composites is certainly a function of the surface liberation, but the reduction in flotation rate is independent of particle size. Thus all particles are equally affected by reduced surface liberation, independently of their size. He further argued that the classical peak observed in the rate constant with increasing particle size, is a function of machine hydrodynamics. Thus in mechanical cells, the peak may be due to the high energy dissipation rate and its effects on the detachment of particles from bubbles (Goel and Jameson, 2012). Consequently, in a different flotation environment, it may be possible to float large composite particles that cannot be floated in mechanical cells. This paper describes the flotation of large composite particles in a fluidized bed flotation cell. The particles to be floated are fed to a column in which there is a continuous upflow of liquid. A conventional froth layer of controlled depth is formed at the top of the vessel. A fluidized bed of particles is established which provides a gentle environment for the contacting of large particles with bubbles. An example is given where a porphyry copper ore was prepared at a top size of 710 µm, and floated with conventional collector (PAX) and frother (MIBC). The concentrate was separated into size fractions and examined by photography. Composites were observed at all size fractions, but above 400 µm, all particles were composites. The implications for future flotation circuits will be described."

In the ten years since the University of NSW proposed a pillar design methodology for bord and pillar operations, the Australian coal mining industry has changed substantially. What was primarily a bord and pillar design approach is now being applied to chain pillar design in longwall mines where the requirements are substantially different. The dimensions of chain pillars can impact on tailgate conditions (roof, rib and floor), seal performance, and surface subsidence. The status of chain pillar design practice in Australia is reviewed, with a focus on defining pillar strength, chain pillar loading, and assessing the performance of the roof/pillar/system. A new pillar strength equation is proposed for Australian coal that applies for all width/height ratios. An alternative analysis of probability of failure of chain pillars is presented.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

"AbstractThe Cargill phosphate deposit, located 32 kilometers southwest of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was discovered by the Resource Development Group of International Minerals & Chemical Corporation in 1975 and has been evaluated through an extensive program of 190 drill holes, numerous chemical analyses, metallurgical tests, and engineering and economic studies.The Cargill alkalic complex, comprising principally car-bonatite and pyroxenite-amphibolite rocks, was intruded in to the rift system of the Kapuskasing High during late Precambrian time about 1,800 million year s ago, near the intersection of northeast- and northwest- trending faults. The Cargill complex is one of at least ten known alkalic complexes in or close to the Kapuskasing magnetic-gravity-high system and is expressed by an elongated, northeast- oriented, three-part magnetic anomaly 7.2 kilometers long by 2.8 kilometers wide . Weathering and leaching under assumed temperate to cool, moist climatic conditions , and controlled by faulting, shearing and/or initial petrographic variations within the carbonatite , developed a small, locally confined karst system in the car bonatite rocks and resulted in a thick enriched leached carbonatite zone, capped by troughs and sinks, filled with a residuum of apatite, goethite, clay and other minerals stable in the near -surface, oxidizing environment. Overburden is 5 to 165 meters thick."

"The metal producing industries in Canada and in the U.S. in many ways owe their technical beginnings to Welsh technology. The first copper smelter in Canada started in 1849-50 with a Welsh reverberatory furnace and skilled furnacemen brought across from Swansea to operate the equipment1- The Rocky Mountain smelting industry began with the installation of furnaces resembling the Swansea smelters(2). It was only later that the North American industry developed newer and improved methods. This article briefly describes the metallurgical history of the Lower Swansea Valley, being that section of land stretching northward from Swansea along the banks of the River Tawe, and bordered by hillsides east and west of the river. The Valley has had a classic cycle of development and decline common to industrial areas of Britain which grew in the Industrial Revolution. Perhaps more than any other area today, the Swansea Valley represents a complete cycle of use from agricultural to the peak of industrial development through to decline and dereliction. The conditions which made the Tawe Valley attractive to certain industries were laid down nearly 300 million years ago with the Carboniferous swamps and forests which covered the area, later forming the south Wales coalfield. As a result of glacial action and the deposit of glacial outwater and alluvial gravels, the valley adopted the traditional configuration, with its rocky sides occasionally remaining exposed. Up to probably about the 16th century, the Lower Swansea Valley was similar in use and appearance to many other valleys in the region. From the 14th century, the natural oak woodland had provided a continuous source of timber to produce charcoal for iron making as well as for structural purposes. Agriculture was the main activity in the valley in this period, but it was likely that the farmers also mined small amounts of coal by way of ""bell pits"", and adits into the coal seams."

"Coal mining in India has a strategic importance for the energy security of the country. Presently, the majority of coal production is coming from open-cast mining. Due to the fast depletion of reserves amenable to open-cast mining, future coal production will depend primarily on underground production. In conventional bard-and-pillar/room and pillar mining as it is practiced in India, the percentage of extraction is very low. In fact, within most Indian coalfields, a large number of coal seams extract only 15- 20% of coal, but no pillar extraction is done due to the presence of surface or sub-surface structures leading to huge amount of coal being locked-up in underground. Spontaneous heating and fire, the accumulation of poisonous gases, severe stability issues, unsafe workings and environmental hazards are all major problems associated with these developed coal pillars, so there is a pressing need for technology in the mining industry to extract this huge amount of coal locked up under different constraints. In this study, we propose that the locked-up coal be extracted by replacing the developed coal pillars with artificial pillars. The paper briefly discusses the extraction methodology designed for this and its evaluation through numerical modeling for applied suitability underground.INTRODUCTIONDriven by rising populations and urbanization, an expanding economy and also a quest for improved quality of life, energy usage in India is expected to increase manifold in the coming years. As for India's energy scenario and its projected future plans, there is no doubt that coal will remain a prime source of energy, even over the next few decades.The majority of coal production in India comes from open-cast mining because of large-scale mechanization, but the coal reserves amenable to open-cast mining are gradually depleting - which may impose adverse impacts on the energy sector if underground production does not increase. Underground coal extraction, meanwhile, is going to become more complicated in near future due to the fast exhaustion of easily mineable coal reserves."

The Elliot Lake Centre was established in 1965 as an independent Centre for Continuing Education offering a variety of adult education services. In 1976 all retraining and community college type activities were transferred to the Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology which had opened a branch campus in Elliot Lake. Upon the completion of this transfer, the Elliot Lake Centre was then contracted in 1977 by the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to study the feasibility of establishing a research and information institute dealing with various health and safety concerns of the uranium worker. By late 1980, a federal charter was granted for the establishment of the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety, made possible through the cooperative efforts of the Governments of Canada and Ontario, the Ontario uranium mining and refining companies, and the Elliot Lake Centre. On 1 April 1981 the Institute officially began operations. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION In May 1978 the Elliot Lake Centre initiated a voluntary sputum cytology program for uranium workers. This program was financed by the Ontario uranium mining companies: Agnew Lake Mines Limited near Sudbury; Madawaska Mines Limited in Bancroft, and Denison Mines Limited and Rio Algom Limited in Elliot Lake. In 1981 additional funding was granted by Eldorado Nuclear Limited for a small group of employees at the company's uranium refinery in Port Hope, Ontario. Initially in 1978, program participants were accepted according to length of employment, radiation exposure levels (calculated in working level months) and/or smoking history. These restrictions were abolished within a few months and all uranium workers were encouraged to participate. From 1978 to 1979 the sputum cytology program was medically directed by personnel from the Montreal Cancer Institute. Until 1979 all data maintenance for the program was performed manually, however the effort required to sustain the system increased significantly as the number of participants grew. In September 1979 the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, under the direction of Dr. F.G. Pearson, submitted a proposal to the Elliot Lake Centre to develop a data processing system to help coordinate the surveillance program. In October 1979, Dr. Pearson became the new Project Director. Director of the Cytology Program is Dr. D.W. Thompson of the University of Toronto who is responsible for all cytologic analyses. Developmental work to establish the new surveillance system was initiated in January 1980 and became fully operational at the beginning of March 1981. The following sections describe the Elliot Lake operations of the sputum cytology program now conducted by the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. PROGRAM PARTICIPATION As of 1 September 1981 the sputum cytology program has 518 participants enrolled. Eligibility is restricted only to a willingness to participate and the ability of an individual to produce adequate sputum samples. Each participant registers for the program at the Institute and is given personal instruction on methods of sputum collection. The majority of the participants in this program are employed by the uranium mining industry; some work for firms which are contracted by the larger companies. Many participants are either retired from the work force or receive disability pensions or workmen's compensation benefits. Other participants have been employed in the uranium mining industry and have since gone on to other employment; some work for various federal and provincial governmental agencies concerned with the mining industry. Some participants are referred to the program by their family physicians because of smoking histories and/or various respiratory conditions. A small number of these individuals have never been involved in the mining industry at all. A chart describing program participation by employment is found in Appendix 1. PROGRAM REGISTRATION In the Elliot Lake area, persons interested in registering in the program are required to go directly to the Sputum Cytology office located at the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety. Each individual is interviewed personally by the Program Officer. For the employees of Agnew Lake Mines, Madawaska Mines and the Port Hope refinery of Eldorado Nuclear Limited, registration is possible during the Program Officer's semi-annual on-sitevisits. Participants are assigned, in chronological order, "program numbers" for easier identification. File labels are color-coded according to place of residence or, in some instances, place of employment. Discussion of the paper of W. R. Shimer and F. O. Kichline, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 81, September, 1913, pp. 2361 to 2377. ALLERTON S. CUSHMAN,* Washington, D. C.:-I have been much interested in Mr. Shimer's valuable contribution. The apparent fact that the oxides of certain metals which are not reduced by hydrogen per se, are reducible when the oxides are dissolved in iron in small quantity, is brought out for the first time, and is worthy of the careful attention of investigators. The Ledebur method has been subjected to considerable criticism, owing to the alleged fact that it did not measure the oxygen combined with impurities. Personally I have found the method extremely helpful in spite of the minute quantities of oxygen with which it deals. Mr. Shinier points out that the highest oxygen he obtained by over-blowing was 0.074 per cent., while the minimum quantity in a properly finished steel was in the neighborhood of 0.02 per cent. The Ledebur method is used as a constant check on the quality of heats made in practice under my direction. In dealing with a very pure commercial iron, we should expect to find and would find difficulty in galvanizing sheets made from a heat running 0.07 per cent. oxygen. In fact, we do not like to have the oxygen rise above 0.03 per cent. I am inclined to agree with the author that excessive oxygen leaves a bath of metal in a very short time, but nevertheless I believe it takes only a very little combined oxygen to begin to make its presence felt in the pickling and galvanizing department, when sheet metal is the product manufactured. As Mr. Shimer points out, the higher the carbon, the lower the oxygen danger, and it is partly for this reason that the manufacture of carbon-free metal in the open-hearth furnace has to be so very carefully watched and controlled from the furnace through to the finished product. It is quite possible that, there is a critical temperature of dissociation between iron and oxygen, although the critical points may vary in baths of different carbon content. Unfortunately, the accurate determination of the temperature of a molten bath at the time of pouring or teeming is a very difficult matter. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effectiveness of long holes drilled in solid virgin coal in degasifying an area of the Pitts- burgh coalbed showing that horizontal holes drilled into a virgin coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove methane gas in commercial quantities from the Pittsburgh coalbed. The in situ pressure at a depth of 214 feet into the coalbed and the average gas and water flows from the five degasification holes were 3 lb/in2 gage and 860,000 ft3/d and 1.7 gal/min, respectively. On June 19, 1975, after 593 days of degasification, a compressor was installed and pipeline quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of June 1, 1976, after 1,022 days of degasification, over 753 million cubic feet of gas had been drained and 117 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company for use in the local community of Wadestown, W. Va. The gas drained to date is six times the gas estimated to be in the area subtended by the holes. Methane emissions at the working face of 1 West mains, Federal No. 2 mine has been reduced by 50 pct, proving the value of methane drainage by horizontal degasification holes drilled from shaft bottoms ahead of mining.

Abstract The degree of cathodic protection of steel and the anode corrosion rate were determined when anodes and waters of different compositions were used at temperatures similar to those in domestic hot water tanks. Twenty different anode materials, sixteen of them magnesium-zinc-aluminium alloys, were immersed in six different synthetic waters resembling those to be found in various parts of Canada. The results showed that (1) both the degree of cathode protection and the average anode corrosion rate are affected materially by the composition of the anode material and of the water; (2) poor cathode protection is associated with low anode corrosion rate; (3) when the cathode is fully protected, the anode corrosion rate may be comparatively low or comparatively high, depending upon the composttion of the water; (4) an important relationship exists between the magnesium content of the preferred anode and the composition of the water; (5) the degree of protection is increased as the SO4 + Cl concentration of the water is increased and thus as its specific resistance is decreased. Introduction Fairly recently, the use of the active metal magnesium for the cathodic protection of less active metals has received a considerable amount of attention. This interest has been stimulated by the fact that the wartime demand for magnesium was greatly in excess of the present peacetime demand and there is a natural desire to continue operating the large magnesium plants which were built during the war. Information regarding the use of zinc and aluminium for this purpose also has been published. There is a great demand for domestic hot-water tanks which will resist corrosion satisfactorily. This problem is rather complex in view of the fact that the composition of the water used in such tanks varies greatly and depends upon the locality. The present investigation deals with the effect of water composition and anode composition on the cathodic protection of steel under conditions approaching those which exist in hot water tanks.

Chromite was recorded among the rare minerals in the natural beach sand concentrates on the coast of Northern New South Wales by Whitworth(l) in 1931, and the commercial production of zircon and rutile from these beach sands has yielded concentrates of ilmenite with small amounts of chromium. The chromite is a detrimental impurity in the utilisation of the ilmenite, and the difficulties that attend the separation of the small amount of chromite from the ilmunite have raised suggestions from time to time that chromite occurs with ilmenite in composite grains. The absence of such composite grains and the nature of the chromite grains has been indicated by the following mineragraphic examination of magnetic concentrates containing chromite which were prepared by the C.S.I.R. Ore Dressing Laboratory, Melbourne University, from ilmenite concentrates from beach sands at Norrie's Head, County Rous, New South Wales and Stradbroke Island, Queensland.The magnetic concentrates from each locality are divided into five fractions, and the No. 1 concentrate is the most highly magnetic and the tailing the least magnetic. "Revealed and analyzed in the study are the ways of significant perfection of specific characteristics of the equipment, such as use of high-frequency voltage transformation to create a charger; use of pulse transformers, with core made of materials with high magnetic permeability, in pulse generating circuits; as well as use of special ways to produce voltage pulses with a short front. The experiments have proved the possibility to adapt these technological solutions for electric-pulse installations, and suggested on this base is a strategy of further development and application of electric-pulse technologies. The different applications joint work schemes of voltage sources with two levels voltage and energy in electric pulse technologies are investigated. The possibility of increasing energy efficiency of destruction is shown."

In some experimental work conducted several years ago, it was noted that sulphur seemed to have a distinct influence on grain size of carbon steels. 111 order to check this observation, a series of S..A.E. 1040 steels was made with the normal composition held as nearly constant as possible. The steels were made with three sulphur levels, which were 0.012, 0.024 and 0.038 per cent sulphur, respectively. For each of the sulphur levels, steels were made with only silicon deoxidization and with aluminum additions of 0.1015, 0.025, 0.050 and 0.10 per cent. The melting medium was an acid-lined high-frequency induction furnace. These steels were forged and rolled and differentiall!. quenched from temperaturcs in the range of 1500O to 1800°F. After this, the A.S.T.M. grain size was determined and plotted as in Fig. I. It will be noted, first of all, that the aluminum-free steels had filler grain size with higher sulphur when heated to 1500, but that this condition was reversed at 1700°. When aluminum was added to produce fine grain size, the steels in the lowest sulphur level were fine-grained only to 1600°. and then only with an addition of one pound of aluminum per ton. The medium sulphur steels werc fine-grained to 1600' with a wider range of aluminum addition. The steels in the highest sulphur level were fine-grained at 1600° over a still wider range of aluminum additions and fine- grained at 1700° with an addition of one pound per ton. Fig. 2 shows curves of the grain-coarsening temperature for these steels and illustrates how sulphur and aluminum combine to give greater inhibition to grain growth than aluminum alone. Only the highest sulphur steels have a grain-coarsening temperaturc above 1700°.. At 1650°, the low sulphur steel is fine-grained only at its peak, while the highest sulphur steel is fine-grained over a wide range. In these tests, one pound of aluminum per ton gave the best results; this is equivalent to about 1 1/2 lb. per ton for commercial condition. IllcQuaid-Ehn tests made on these steels showed the same trend but to a lesser degree. The tests were repeated on a series of S.A.E:. 1015 steels with sulphur levels of 0.02 and 0.03j per cent. Aluminum additions were made in the range from 0.025 to 0.15 per cent. These steels were forged and rolled, normalized at 2000°F. to put them all in the same starting condition, then reheated to various temperatures from 1600" to 1800" and cooled at rates that would allow ferrite precipitation in the austenitic grain boundaries. The results of these tests arc shown in Fig. 3. It will be noted that. up to the temperature of 1650°, there is very little difference in the grain size obtained from the two levels of sulphur. .At temperatures of 1700° and 1750°, however, the lower sulphur steel was fine-grained only with an aluminum addition of 1 1/2 lb, per ton;

In this paper, a geostatistical study of the North Butte roll type uranium deposit is presented. The geostatistical procedure applied takes into account the varying direction of the roll front for reserves calculations. For variogram calculation, the roll front is unfolded thereby allowing estimation of the variogram in directions parallel to and perpendicular to the roll front. Variograms calculated in unfolded space show strong directional anisotropies consistent with the anticipated configuration of the deposit.

In this paper we will discuss the process of the grain size customization of the EBT filler sand in relationship to the technical characteristics of the furnace and its tap hole. By customizing the grain size distribution, the glassy area formed on the top of the tap hole varies and supports differently the metallurgical pressure of the molten steel providing increased free opening speeds. Taylor made sand improves therefore the free opening rate, reduces the tap to tap time and increases the lifespan of the tap

Most of the other mineral processing plants around the world uses cyclones as the classification device in their grinding circuit. The difference between these two methods are well known in terms of capital cost and grinding efficiency but the differences in terms of the impact on the downstream processing stages are a lot harder to predict and are case specific. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec decided to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their impact on the recovery of the downstream processing stages as well as the operating cost of the mill. We switched between cyclones and screens for 8 month in 2013 and early 2014 and we are now operating only with cyclones since march 2014.INTRODUCTIONThe Niobec mine and concentrator were built in the mid 70’s and at that time, the mill was processing 1 500 tons per day. Over the years, many expansion projects have brought the plant to 7 000 tons per day. Throughout the initial concentrator design and commissioning, screens have been chosen over cyclones because of their higher classification efficiency which is known to reduce variability and limit the fine generation especially due to a high undersize classification efficiency. Just like many other plants, fine particle generation is a major problem at Niobec because of its negative effect on downstream processing stages. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec’s engineering team decided, 35 years later, to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their actual impact on the final recovery and the operating cost of the mill.The grinding circuit is separated in two lines which will be called Circuit #1 and Circuit #2 along this paper. Circuit #1 is, as you can see in Figure 1, composed of a rod mill and two parallel ball mills in closed circuit with screens and screw classifiers. The screens oversize are sent to the screw classifiers while the undersize are sent to the next processing stage. The screw classifiers overflow are both sent back to the pump box while their oversize streams return in their corresponding ball mills for further grinding. Circuit #2 is, as you can see in Figure 1, quite the same as Circuit #1 except it has only one set of screw classifier and ball mill. Figure 1 also shows the modification in arrangement each circuits went through to integrate the new cyclones. Optimal sizing of a ventilation shaft is a classical subject in mine ventilation economics.. The shaft size is optimized by minimizing the sum of shaft-construction and ventilation-power costs, or owning and operating costs. The length and air quantity of the shaft are held constant, and the location of the shaft, affecting its depth, and construction and ventilation power costs, is not considered (Hartman, 1961; Lambrechts, 1974; Wang et al., 1978). This paper proposes an approach by which the location and size for a new pair of shafts (intake and return shafts) are optimized for a coal-mine ventilation network. Specifically, the problem is to determine the location and size for a new pair of shafts, and the distribution of air between the new and old shafts so that the combined cost of shaft construction and ventilation power is minimized. The shaft length or depth corresponds to the height of overburden at any shaft location. To simplify the problem, the shaft locations will be limited to the line along the main or submain entries, and the connection entries at the shaft bottom neglected. In order to calculate the ventilation-power cost, the air power of the system should be determined. This in turn requires the calculations of the air quantity and pressure of each fan in the network, satisfying Kirchhoff's laws and Atkinson equation. After obtaining the air power, the cost calculation is straightforward. In the following, we shall assume that the resistances of all airways, and the quantity for each mining section, which is controlled by adjusting the air regulator, are all known. The resistances for the shafts are determined from the estimated friction factors, and shaft dimensions and lengths. Furthermore, it will be assumed that the fans can be selected to meet the duties called for by any network solutions.
