Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle rearrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by a pulsating fluid flow. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. The particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen and helped and influenced by the feed material that is introduced at one end. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically ?cut? at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired product from the less dense gangue material. The issue of correct pulse characteristics (shape, amplitude and frequency) for the optimal metallurgical stratification of air pulsating jigs has been the subject of much discussion over the years. The accuracy of the dissymmetric stratification depends on the control parameters and the mechanical condition of specific equipment used. This paper will touch on some of the control and mechanical parameters affecting the separation efficiency.

Abstract -Detailed sampling using a portable diamond drill, and interlaboratory comparison of selected samples have been combined with statistical studies of truncated populations to establish the gold content of several outcrops in the Val d'Or area. The outcrops chosen are non-mineralized. The background gold concentration in the rocks of the region is 5 ppb or Jess. Gold is distributed relatively homogeneously within the outcrops studied except for slightly increased concentrations within quartz-tourmaline veinlets. Three samples, of which 20 grams of powder are analyzed for each, can adequately determine the gold concentration of a structurally simple outcrop in the Val d'Or area.

The cupola furnace is a coke-fueled shaft furnace used as a primary melting unit in iron foundries. Control of chemical composition of the iron tapped from the cupola is a key factor in productivity and quality control. In an effort to develop a control model for the cupola, a fundamental approach based on physical and chemical principles has been taken to describe the melting process. The behavior of oxidation of the solid charge in the stack of the cupola has been studied. Sulfidation of the charge materials by sulfur-bearing components released to the furnace gases from the coke has been described. Carburization of metal droplets of iron and of steel in separate molten streams has been characterized. Finally, reactions with alloying elements in the hearth (well) of the furnace have been defined. These reactions have been described in a computer-implemented model developed to predict the composition of the iron tapped from the cupola. The model has utilized the thermodynamics and kinetics of the oxidation, sulfidation, and carburization reactions, including temperature and physical aspects, in the various zones of the melting unit. The model predictions have been compared favorably with operating results.

Today, the two major operating costs of rubber tired off-road equipment are diesel fuel and tires. Mine Management has minimal control over the ever accelerating diesel fuel costs. However, they can exercise control over abnormal tire costs. Fortunately, with available technology and cost analysis methods, experience shows us the outlook for controlling tire costs is encouraging. Most earthmoving operations using off-road, rubber tired haulage and support equipment have abnormally high total tire costs. These costs, utilizing Tire Information Management, have been reduced more than 30%; 20% can often be guaranteed. Management Apathy on the subject of tires in a complex mining operation perhaps can be understood, but management apathy applied to an abnormally high operating cost, of which tires are, begs for a solution.' Tires have been professionally neglected for many years in most mine operations. This is exemplified in the January, 1982 issue of Mining Engineering by Charlie Son in his article Reducing Earthmoving Tire Costs. He compared the efforts to improve diesel engine costs to the same efforts given to earthmover tires.

The phenomenon of the change of volume of pressed powder compacts upon sintering is well known in the field of powder metallurgy. Depending upon the metal or metals involved and the pressure used in forming, a compact may, in the course of time of sintering at a given temperature, expand mono-tonically, contract monotonically, or first show a volume change of one sign followed by a change of the opposite sign. It is clearly desirable to have accurate knowledge of the magnitude and sign of the change in dimensions to be expected in any given case, both from the point of view of direct usefulness in the fabrication of parts by powder metallurgy, and from the longer range viewpoint of elucidating the fundamental mechanism of metallic sintering. The present study was therefore undertaken as a first step in acquiring systematic and reasonably quantitative knowledge of the change in density of metal powder compacts during sintering. For practical reasons, copper was selected as the material to be studied first, and its densification followed as a function of temperature and time of sintering in hydrogen and in vacuum. Experimental Procedure The copper powder used was that designated by the manufacturer (Metals Disintegrating Co., Elizabeth, N. J.) as MD-151. This powder was sifted through Tyler standard screens to separate the fraction having particle size range between 200 mesh and 325 mesh, and this fraction was used in all the subsequent work. Compacts weighing about 10 g were then pressed in a 1 in. diam round die, using a pressure of 20,000 psi throughout. Sintering was carried out in commercially built electric furnaces in which the resistance windings are so disposed as to produce a nearly uniform temperature along the axis of the furnace for a length of about 18 in. centrally located. In order to be able to sinter in a controlled atmosphere, a 2 in. stainless steel tubing was inserted in the furnace. Each end of the tube was cooled by a water jacket about 7 in. long, and closed with a rubber stopper. The hydrogen used for one series of specimens was purified as described in Ref. 1. For the other set, a pressure of about 0.5 mm Hg was maintained during sintering by a Welch Duo-Seal Pump. The specimens were heated on square trays made of stainless steel. In placing specimens in the trays, a thin even layer of powdered aluminum oxide was first sprinkled on the bottom of the tray. A copper guard disk about half the thickness of the specimen was then placed in the tray and covered with a second layer of alumina. The actual specimen was then set on the guard disk, and a final coat of alumina sprinkled over the specimen. This technique was evolved for sintering the specimens in such a way as to reduce the influence of unknown extraneous factors to a minimum. If the specimen is placed directly on the tray and sintered, it is found that the resulting shape is that of a frustum of a cone, rather than a section of a right circular cylinder, since friction with the tray prevents the bottom of the specimen from contracting at the same rate as the top. In the arrangement used in these experiments, the guard disk provided a support which shrank at the same rate as the specimen, and the alumina powder reduced to a minimum friction between guard disk and tray, and between specimen and guard disk. The procedure followed in sintering consisted of bringing the furnace to the required temperature, and then inserting the specimen into the central heated portion of the furnace tube in one of the two atmospheres used. At the end of the heating period, the specimen was cooled by bringing it into a portion of the furnace surrounded by a water jacket. These manipulations were carried out without opening the furnace, by means of rods which were attached to the trays and operated through a sliding seal in the rubber stopper. The progress of densification of the copper compacts was studied at 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, and 1800°F. At each of these temperatures, a specimen was allowed to sinter for each of the following time intervals: M, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 hr. The thickness and diameter of each specimen were measured with micrometers before and after sintering, and each was weighed on an analytical balance after sintering. Results The techniques described in the preceding section were found to give satisfactory results. The specimens were not detectibly warped after sintering, and were usually of uniform diameter (that is, truly round) to within 0.001 in., a very few showing a variation in diameter of ±0.002 in. "With the globalization of the mining industry, many companies are now seeking to invest in underground diamond mines, with the purchase of small diamond pipes being seen as particularly attractive. However, recent experiences in South Africa have shown that many projects fail due to a lack of awareness of the hazards associated with diamond mining. In this paper three significant hazards are dealt with — mud rushes, block crushing, and implementation of an inappropriate mining method. Measures that assist in the prevention of these three hazards are given.IntroductionFor over a hundred years, South Africa has been seen as the centre of the diamond mining industry, possibly having the largest number of operational underground diamond mines in the world. Despite the fact that this industry has been dominated by large mines of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, many small underground mines have operated profitably for a number of years, exploiting diamondiferous fissures and pipes. In the last decade there has been renewed interest in these small operations from international companies. However, many of these projects have not realized their full potential owing to a lack of appreciation of the hazards inherent in the operation of a diamond mine.Hazards Associated with Diamond MiningIn the development of a diamond mine, the mining company must be aware of the hazards associated with diamond mining. There are three main hazards: (1) mud rushes; (2) block crushing; and (3) selection of an inappropriate mining method (not a natural hazard, but a planning induced hazard). IN attempting to describe recent mining developments at the Bunker Hill mine, it may be well to recall first the old days of hand mining when holes were laboriously drilled by hand to a maximum depth of three feet, and were shot one or two at a time, in order that the miner could take advantage of every slip, crack or bedding plane, and so save as much drilling as possible. Broken muck, of course, was loaded by hand shoveling into wheelbarrows or small cars, and heading advances or stope ton¬nages were governed by the number of men that could find room to work in any given place. The first big improvement over these old methods was the introduction of the reciprocating type of air-powered rock drill. This innovation, crude as it was, enabled the miners to set up a machine and drill a complete round of holes in one shift; but broken muck was still loaded by hand, and the size and rate of advance in headings were limited by time required to remove the broken rock. The next improvement of consequence was the appearance of the hammer-type rock drill, which greatly increased drilling speed over the reciprocating type, and made possible the completion of a full cycle in one shift, by the use of crossbars in headings, and permitted drilling and mucking to be carried on at the same time. Rock drills continued to improve as time passed, and finally the smaller and more efficient mucking machines appeared on the scene, and it became possible to muck out a round of broken rock and have a clean setup for one or more drill columns and machines. A complete cycle of mucking, drilling, and blasting was completed in one shift with an average advance of five feet. These conditions prevailed for several years, but as the mine grew deeper, the distances to transport the workers grew longer, and this fact together with the shortening of the working day, soon presented the problem of attempting to complete a cycle of operations in a shift of only six hours at the working faces. Anticipating this condition, the operating heads at the Bunker Hill had started an intensive study of more and better mechanization, and over a period of comparatively few years have adopted and placed in service methods and machines that make it possible for a three-man crew to consistently advance headings seven by nine feet in cross section, at the rate of eight feet, and more, per shift, doing all the mucking, switching, drilling and loading. These improvements consist of the following major items: I. The development of a light, flexible, easily transported jumbo equipped with pneumatic columns (Fig I), that has decreased the "setting up" and "tearing down" time an average of 1 1/2 hr per shift, or 25 pct of the available working time. These jumbos were developed at the Bunker Hill mine by members of the staff and consist of two pneumatic columns attached to a suitable carriage. They fold

"The fluorspar deposits in the Gallinas Mining District, Lincoln County, New Mexico, were examined early in February and again in April 1943 by the Bureau of Mines because of the possible importance of newly discovered deposits and of old mine workings showing fluorite-bearing material. There &re many of these deposits spread over a considerable area, and it appeared that exploration might indicate sufficient reserves to support a local mill that could contribute to the supply of fluorspar needed for war purposes. Accordingly, the Bureau initiated an exploratory program in June 1943, which was completed in August 1944.H. E. Rothrock, Roy Earhart, R. G. Smalley, and V. C. Kelly, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey, began mapping and studying the district in May 1943 and continued this work throughout the Bureau's exploration.David J. Stauffer, district ranger, U. S. Forest Service, and several claim owners assisted in the examinations and subsequent exploration.The fluorspar deposits in the Gallinas Mountains are reached by an unpaved forest road, which, leaves U. S. Highway 54 half a mile south of Gallinas station. The road runs due west for 3 miles, then turns due north just beyond the first cattleguard. This north branch is followed for 2 miles to a second cattleguard. There a left branch extends northwest up Red Cloud Canyon to the Red Cloud, and. All. American deposits; the right branch continues north for 2.miles past the Wade Porter ranch, to another left branch, which goes almost 2 miles west to the Hoosier Group deposits. The remaining deposits are reached by trail from either the Hoosier Group or, more easily, from the Red Cloud claim (fig. 1).The Hoosier Group is in sec. l9,, T.. 1S.,1 R. 12 E.; all of the other known ore occurrences are in secs. 13, 14, and 23 to 27, inclusive, T. IS., R. 11 E. All of the deposits are in the Lincoln National Forest and within the limits of a State game refuge. The nearest railroad loading point is Gallinas, Station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Corona, the next station north of Gallinas, is a Mile or two farther from the deposits.Minor supplied, telegraph, telephone, freight, and express service, and limited living accommodations, Are, obtainable at Corona, 10 to 15 miles from the deposits of Carrizozo, N. Mex., 50 miles south."

This will allow development of efficient process flowsheet for product recovery and compliance with regulatory guidelines. This paper will discuss our recent developments in mineral processing and hydrometallurgical technologies to recover gold and titanium dioxide from a wide range of feed materials including ores, concentrates and tailings.

Pyrite and Cu-concentrate were roasted in vertically suspended state in an externally heated tube. Tubes of three different lengths of reaction zone were used for three different reaction times. Roasted ores were submitted to chemical analysis and the extent of roasting reactions was determined. In case of pyrite, extent of roasting reactions was not affected much by reactor length and heating temperature (above 500¦C), but was considerably by ore/air ratio. Micro- scopic and XMA examinations led to the conclus- ion that pyrite particles decomposed to pyrrho- tite and then pyrrhotite was oxidized to give Fe-S-0 melt, magnetite and hematite. The extent of reaction was not uniform in all particles but had a wide distribution from unreacted pyrite to completely oxidized particles. Combustion of Cu-concentrate from Kuroko complex sulfide ore ) was unstable under a uniform wall temperature of 450¦C, but proceed- ed rapidly at temperatures above 500¦C. Sticking of roasted ores to the wall of the reaction tube induced choking of the tube, caused by melting of roasted ores, at tempera- tures above 950¦C. Enrichment of oxygen exterted less influence on reaction rate than heating temperature of the tube. Particle size of ore had a big effect on reaction rate.

By means of mathematical solutions to the appropriate diffusion equations, we describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various temperatures and concentrations encountered in a heavy water moderated reactor. When the hydrogen concentration is below terminal solid solubility only the a Phase is present. Redistributions are then described in terms of the characteristic functions of the difhsion equation. For higher concentrations both the a and 6 phases are present. We assume the two phases to be always in equilibrium. For moderately small hydrogen concentrations exact solutions of the two-phase equation approach the the approximate solutions derived by Sawatzky and for all concentrations the exact solutions exhibit the qualitative features of his result: the two-phase concentration increases with time, everywhere; in the absence of a hydrogen current at the hot end of the sample an a-phase region always exists there; the interface of the a + 6 , a-phase boundary moves toward the cold md of the sample and the hydrogen concentration is discontinuous at the interface. Simultaneous solulions of the a and a + 6 hydrogen distributims and of the concomitant interface motion are obtained and compared to the observations of Sawatzky and Markowitz. The kinetics of the hydrogen diffusion process are shown to lead to m apparent heat of transport of the a phase which is lower than the actual value (even for samples with long anneals) thus resolving at least partially the disparity between experimental measurements of this quantity. A number of recent papers1"4 have reported measurements on the diffusion and redistribution of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 under temperature and concentration gradients. These studies were instigated by problems arising from increasing use of Zircaloy-2 as a fuel element cladding material in pressurized-water power-reactors. The Zircaloy-2 picks up hydrogen during the operation of the reactor: the consequent precipitation of zirconium hydride in the Zircaloy-2 has pronounced effects on its mechanical properties. The Purpose of the present Paper is to describe the kinetics of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 for the various hydrogen concentrations and temperatures likely to be encountered in reactors. When the hydrogen in the Zircaloy-2 is entirely in the solid solution phase (a phase), the differential equation for thermal diffusion is well known and the redistribution can be described by standard mathematical methods some of which are given in Section 11 below. The treatment of the a + 6 (hydride) region differs from the earlier treatment of sawatzky3 by taking into account several modifications of the two-phase diffusion equations as suggested to us by Markowitz4 and Kidson.5 Even with the modifications the results obtained in our more complete treatment are substantially the same as those found by Sawatzky. As we show, the difference between the results of sawatzky3 and kIarkowitz4 is largely due to the difference in the geometry of their experiments. In the next section we derive the modified two-phase equation for arbitrary geometry. The exact solution of this equation is given in Section III for linear and cylindrical geometry. It is shown that Sawatzky's approximate solution is quite accurate for almost all the temperatures and hydrogen concentrations which are actually encountered. In Sawatzky's approximate theory the hydrogen concentration everywhere in the two-phase region increases continuously. As his paper pointed out, this result, together with hydrogen conservation, implies that in a sample with no hydrogen current flowing into the hot end a two-phase region is always accompanied by a single-phase region at the hot end of the sample. The net hydrogen gain in the two-phase region is supplied by the decrease of hydrogen in the single-phase region and by the movement of the (a, a + 6) boundary toward the cold end of the sample. Hydrogen conservation at the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to a discontinuity in the concentration and its derivative there. In Section IV it is shown how these qualitative features of the thermal diffusion kinetics arise from the simultaneous solution of the a-phase differential equation and a + 6 phase equation. Methods derived by us previously for the solution of the redistribution in both phases and the accompanying motion of the boundary are used to obtain approximate solutions valid for large times. The solutions account well for the observed redistributions of Sawatzky and Markowitz. It is shown how the continuing motion of the (a, a + 6) boundary leads to measured values of the heat of transport lower than the actual value, even for specimens with relatively long anneals.

HOLDING the annual dinner-dance of the Institute at the Waldorf-Astoria had become such a tradition that there was widespread regret when it became known that the demolition of the building to make way for a huge office structure would perforce bring to an end the long and enjoyable series of gatherings our Institute had held there. This year the . Commodore was the place at which it was held and the commuters on the New York Central and the New Haven railroad systems, at least, found it a more convenient place for them. Except for the famous "Hoover" dinner, which will probably set a mark for all time, it was the largest dinner the Institute held, 1000 being present, and it taxed the facilities of the hotel to the utmost.

"Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Due to environmental concerns, it is becoming more pertinent for mining plants to recycle process water and hence limit the usage of potable water. There is an interest to ensure minimal discharge of plant water into the environment, as this water is typically polluted with process reagents that may render it toxic (Levay et al., 2001).Recycled water, however, has been shown to adversely affect flotation. Reagent efficiency can be reduced due to increased suspended solids. A loss of mineral recovery can occur due to competitive adsorption between reagents and other dissolved species, loss of reagents due to precipitation, and unwanted reactions. Further, a reduction in grade can occur due to non-selective coating of reagents on valuable and gangue minerals, and hydrophobic coating of microbiological material on gangue, causing unwanted flotation. Yet despite these drawbacks, water reuse has the advantages of minimal fresh water use and reduced reagent consumption by recovering the unconsumed reagents retained in wastewaters (Bruckard et al., 2011; Levay et al., 2001; Shengo et al., 2016; Slatter et al., 2009)."

It has often been said by consulting engineers that foundation contractors are in the business of taking risks. One would agree that the mere fact a foundation project can be budgeted, planned, engineered and executed solely on the reliability of eight test borings made at a proposed site having an area of approximately 19,000 square feet, is a risky proposition, in and of itself. Now imagine that this site is actually one half of a city block located in an urban setting in an old, congested, historical neighborhood, surrounded by narrow city streets and historic landmark buildings. And suppose that the required depth of excavation for the construction of the new building on this site is approximately 35 feet and the natural groundwater table is at a depth below existing grade of only 25 feet. Given the difficult site conditions outlined above, one could certainly add the words "challenging" and "complicated" to the inherent word "risky" when describing the construction techniques involved to undertake a foundation project of this magnitude. This case study will discuss in detail how the excavation, sheeting, dewatering and underpinning work was accomplished as well as the problems overcome along the way.

THE leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which; according to Pelabon,1 is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgström3 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343°, if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430° if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S3 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)2.Sb203 melts at 517°C.5 4. The volatility of Sb2S3 and Sb203, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for beneficiating platinumgroup metal ores from the Stillwater Complex , Montana , as part of its program to increase the supply of critical and strategic minerals and metals from domestic resources . This report presents results of a 5- day continuous campaign employing a pilot flotation mill to recover sulfide concentrate containing platinum- palladium values from anorthositic ore . A mercaptobenzothiazole - sulfuric acid reagent suite was used . The pilot flotation mill was operated at an average feed rate of 106 lb/ hr of ore . A rougher concentrate containing 8.5 pct of the feed was prepared ; it assayed 1.1 oz /ton Pt and 3.5 oz / ton Pd . Recovery of platinum and palladium were 91 and 87 pct , respectively .

The structural setting of disseminated-replacement gold deposits of the Carlin-type and other aspects of their genesis are closely related to events which took place during the evolution of the Basin and Range province. The deposits formed as a result. of chemical and physical processes which took place at shallow depths in the roots of hot spring systems at moderate temperatures (about 200°C) and low pressures (about 25 bars) (Radtke and Dickson, 1974). Locations of Carlin-type gold deposits in the Basin and Range province are shown in Figure 1. Most of the block-faulted mountain ranges in the Great Basin formed by tectonic activity that happened since Miocene time, although faulting in some places probably began in Eocene to Oligocene time (Hamilton and Myers, 1966). The Carlin-type deposits are spatially related to Basin and Range-type faults: Many deposits, such as Getchell, Pinson, Preble, and Cortez, occur along the flanks of ranges, while other deposits, including Carlin (Radtke, 1974) occur within the ranges in areas characterized by crosscutting and intersecting high-angle or Basin and Range-type faults. The association of the ore deposits with Basin and Range-type faults is evidence that ore deposition is young, Miocene or later. The steep, high-angle faults played three roles: first, they provided deep channels for upward-flowing solutions; second, in preparing the rocks for fluid penetration by brecciation and general rock dislocation; and third, they moved sedimentary carbonate rocks, favorable for ore deposition, from deep levels to near-surface positions where the physico-chemical conditions were more suitable for the deposition of ore.

The high elevation of China Western Mining Company (WMC)' s Ganhe refinery, and the high iron content of concentrates produced by the WMC mines, were key factors in the selection of pressure leaching by WMC for their new zinc refinery. This paper describes the results of pressure leaching test work conducted by Sherritt in Fort Saskatchewan with a sample of WMC concentrate from Qinghai Province in China. Results from batch pressure leach tests and a four-day pilot plant campaign are reported. The pilot plant campaign included continuous operation of a two-stage pressure leach circuit, as well as neutralization and iron removal steps, resulting in the production of iron-free zinc sulphate solution. Greater than 98% zinc extraction was achieved in pressure leaching, while producing solution containing about 9 g/L H2SO4 and 2 g/L Fe. Following neutralization and iron removal, the solution contained about 170 g/L Zn and less than 10 mg/L Fe. Overall recovery of sulphur in the zinc concentrate feed to elemental sulphur byproduct was about 85%, while 75 to 80% of the indium in the feed was recoverable from the neutralization residue. The test results highlighted the technical and economic advantages offered by the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process and provided the required data for the engineering design.

High precision on-line particle size distribution measurement of mineral slurries has recently be-come available. It provides new tools for the development of monitoring and optimization methods for mineral grinding and separation circuits. The paper presents the development work at the Kemi chromite concentrator plant of Outokumpu Tornio Works in Northern Finland. The Kemi concentrator processes annually 1.2 Mt of chromium ore. The products are upgraded lumpy ore and metallurgical grade concentrate. The concentrate is produced using gravity separation methods, preceded by a rod mill - ball mill grinding stage. The separation process performance is strongly dependent on the particle size distribution of the grinding product at the Kemi plant. Particle size distribution has a significant effect on the concentrate grade and recovery. Currently a new laser diffraction based on-line particle size analyser is used for monitoring the grinding product. The analyser system allows the measurement of the whole cumulative particle size distribution simultaneously. It provides a wealth of new measurement information for process control. A monitoring and optimization scheme for grinding and gravity separation based on the particle size information is presented. The goal is to minimize the production of fine slime, and subsequently to improve the concentrate quality and minimize chromite recovery losses. Data-based recursively identified linear PLS process models are developed for optimization purposes. The preliminary results of the monitoring system operation in on-line use are presented.
