THE subject which has been allotted to me is so vast and far-reaching that it is impossible to deal adequately with it in the time available. THE ORDINARY well log is subjected to a great deal of criticism, much of which is well founded. Sometimes, though, the difficulty in interpreting the log is due to the fact that the geologist or engineer using the logs does not know the limitations of the drilling method used. The rotary drill, especially, has inherent limitations that make it difficult, to secure .definite information at all times. The identification of well-defined key beds is about all that can be expected from the rotary log. The formation in a drilled hole, as reported by the driller; has a direct relation to the speed with which the drill makes the hole or to the reaction of the various strata on the bit, called the "feel of the bit." When this is not thoroughly understood by the geologist or engineer endeavoring to interpret the log, the result is an erroneous correlation with other wells or a discarding of the log as worthless. GENERAL TERMS Hard and Soft.-Hard and soft are relative terms. In the case of well logs, they are very misleading as they are used in connection with both resistance to abrasion and resistance to percussion. In technical rock classification, hardness is relative resistance to abrasion. The term brittleness is used in connection with resistance to blows. These terms are misleading to the geologist or engineer who is not familiar with both the cable-tool, or standard tool, method of drilling and the rotary method. In the case of the standard tools, the driller's report of the hardness of the formation is in terms of its resistance to blows. For instance, a cable-tool driller might be able to make from 30 to 50 ft. a tour in a brittle limestone, which he would call soft and at the same time he might call a relatively soft (from a purely mineralogical standpoint) gypsum hard, because it is somewhat elastic and is not readily broken by blows. The rotary driller would reverse the terms. The limestone is hard in that it resists the abrasive action of the bit, while the gypsum might be soft in that it is readily cut by the rotary bit. I HAVE had an opportonity, within the last few months, of making a large number of physical and chemical tests of steel for boiler and ship-plate, which has been, and is now being, used principally for the United States Government cruisers, now building in Mr. John Roach's yard, at Chester, Pa. Through the courtesy of the Messrs. Houston, of the Chester Rolling Mills, I have the honor to lay before the members of the Institate the results of these tests. These results have developed some points in regard to the nature of steel, which are more or less new, and which, I hope, will prove interesting. The original specifications, as regards the manner of testing, were so inipracticable (when their severity mas taken into consideration), that the keel of the first vessel, which will be launched next month, would, had they been carried out, probably not have been laid until next year. At my suggestion, in order to simplify and expedite the immense amount of testing that had to be done, the Naval Advisory Board was induced, after considerable discussion, to alter the specifications, so as to test each heat, instead of each lot of twenty plates, but reserved the right of making the quenching-test on a piece from each ingot, after it had been rolled. This relieved us from the anxiety of having a lot of plates rejected, after they had beell rolled and sheared, by reason of the presence of one or two plates which might have been injured in heating or rolling, or which might not have been able to stand the tests; while it insured the Government in obtaining a uniform quality of steel, and prevented the temptation to introduce a half-dozen or more had plates in a lot, and run the risk of their being selected as the testplates. The object of this investigation was to determine the distribution of chemical elements within a large, killed alloy-steel ingot, by sulphur printing and quantitative chemical analysis. With regard to segregation in steel ingots, the factors of melting practice, pouring temperatures, mold design, etc., and the mechanics of solidification and its attendant functions, have been the subject of intensive study over a period of years by many investigators. Notable among these is the Sub-committee of the No. 5 Committee of the British Iron and Steel Institute. For an exposition of the many problems awaiting the researcher on the heterogeneity of steel ingots, the methods of attacking these problems, together with some of the answers, the reader is referred to the nine reports and numerous papers of that committee and its membership. Steelmaking Data Melt.—The heat was made in a 70-ton direct arc-type basic electric furnace. Furnace charge consisted of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, most of it in the form of heavy mill scrap. All of the scrap was charged cold. The standard double-slag method was employed, the heat being finished under a strong carbide slag. Aluminum was used as the deoxidizing agent. Tapping tempera- ture, as observed with an optical pyrometer, was 3000°F. Detail of Mold and Ingot Size.—Details of the ingot mold and the ingot itself are given in Fig. I. Teeming.—Teeming temperature of the subject ingot as observed with an optical pyrometer was 2830°F. The ingot was top-poured directly through a 1 1/2-in. nozzle and required 7 min., 44 sec. to fill up to the hot top. An additional 2 min., 30 sec. were required to fill the hot top. The ingot was stripped hot and charged with the remainder of the heat into an annealing furnace. There it was given the standard annealing cycle used for these ingots. Subsequent heat-treatments are described elsewhere in this paper. Sectioning and Preparation for Sulphur Printing Because of previous favorable experience in sectioning ingots up to 21 1/2 in. square with an oxyacetylene torch, it was decided to use this method to section the subject ingot. The ingot was preheated to 900°F. for 12 hr. It was then placed on a steel bed in a horizontal position so that the longitudinal axis was level and parallel to the track of the motor-driven torch carrier. Two cuts were made, one 2 in. above the longitudinal axis and the other 2 in. below. The time required to make each cut was approximately 75 min. The cutting operation is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The 4-in. thick slab was mmediately charged into a furnace standing at 1200F.

The channel effect is a phenomenon that takes place with decoupling explosive charges; an air shock wave propagating ahead of the detonation wave in the annular space around the explosive charge compresses the charge so that the process of detonation is modified and even stopped. For commercial explosives, such as AN/FO slurries and emulsions, the channel effect causes partial detonation under certain conditions. To simulate and evaluate the phenomenon, a hydrodynamic model was developed based on the assumption that the pre-shock wave is produced by Mach reflection at the tube walls. Based on instrumented experimental studies with the above explosives in diameters ranging from 25 to 90 mm in pipe sizes ranging from 35 to 127 mm, it has been possible to demonstrate that a criterion for failure based on a critical impulse concept fits the experimental data well. Critical impulse values for the various explosives tested are presented along with the necessary correlations between charge and borehole diameter required to produce this.

The Muruntau gold deposit is situated in the Kyzyl Kum Desert of Uzbekistan. It is currently being mined in the world's largest open pit gold mine with production believed to be of the order of two million ounces per annum. The open pit measures about 3.5 by 2.5 km and extends to a depth of 350m. The gold ore resource in the Muruntau deposit, including production, is about 170 million ounces of gold (Anonymous, 1996). This paper presents a summary of the deposit geology and its regional geological setting. Information used in this paper has been generated from observations made on two visits to the mine and its environs, and a review of the Russian-and English-language literature.

ANY metal which contains even a small percentage of aluminum possesses certain peculiarities of appearance and properties which are exhibited both when the metal is melted and after it solidifies. Pure aluminum, or an alloy containing a small proportion of aluminum, can be melted without flux-except for a layer of charcoal-because a film of aluminum oxide and metal forms at the surface of melted aluminum. Although very thin, this film is air-proof, and it prevents the metal underneath from oxidizing. This oxidized film does not move easily on account of its toughness and high surface tension. One very important point in connection with this process of still casting has not been strongly enough stressed, namely, that the same kind of surface film with the same peculiarities forms over the surface of all melted alloys that contain even a small proportion of aluminum. Experienced foundrymen know how desirable it is to cast aluminum under its "skin" or-under the surface of the film which tends to remain still. In the case of red copper, when in fusion, the surface shows pure copper only. This is due to the fact that liquid copper constantly absorbs the copper oxide which forms on the surface. By closely examining melting copper the oxide can be seen dissolving in the bath, and going into solution just as pulverized sugar dissolves in water. When copper is cast in the open, either in wire bars or cakes, the surface of metal exposed to the air is covered by a film of black, oxide that cannot be absorbed by the metal.

Newmont?s Phoenix mine started production in March of 2006. Due to the extreme hardness of the ore, the mill has struggled to meet throughput projections. Grinding studies showed that optimizing the existing circuit would not achieve budgeted throughput. These studies also showed that the pebble crusher was being underutilized due to the inability of the SAG mill to break the rock. The concept was developed to supplement the feed to the existing pebble crusher with a secondary crusher. Models of this process looked favorable so a portable crusher was installed to test the process. The temporary crusher was successful at increasing the throughput by 7% and based on the operating data, plans are currently being developed to install a permanent secondary crushing system in front of the SAG mill. This paper will review the results from the test crusher and the flow sheet for the permanent secondary crusher.

Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.

The Cæur d'Alene silver-lead mining district of northern Idaho is probably best known to the general public as a seat of labor-troubles. So far as the writer is aware, little has been written and little is known about its geology and resources. People interested in lead-smelting are, of course, cognizant of the economic importance of the region, but they have not communicated much of their knowledge to the public. Exact figures as to the total output of the district are not obtainable, but the following estimates, covering the entire output of the 15 years during which the mines have been operated, are believed to be approximately correct: Group of Mines. Product. Wardner Group, including the Bunker Hill and Sul livan, Empire State-Idaho, Last Chance, Sierra Nevada, bur d'Alene Development Co... . $17,500,000 Cafion Creek Group, including the Gem, Frisco Con solidated, Granite, Standard, Mammoth, Hecla, Tiger-Poorman, Custer and Bell,.... 35,000,000 Mullan Group, including the Morning, You Like and Gold Hunter,........7,500,000 $60,000,000 This output covers the period of discovery and early struggles, and several periods of stagnation caused by strikes and other serious labor-troubles. In 1900 the output of the district was fully $10,000,000, and this figure would have been considerably increased in 1901 had not a curtailment of production been forced by the condition of the lead-market. In 1901 the product was about 150,000 tons of concentrates, with a gross. value of $8,250,000.

This work aims at the selection of an appropriate eluant for cyanide recycling using ion exchange resins. Based on a literature review as well as on experimental results, the elution of resins loaded with copper and minor amounts of iron and nickel is discussed. The resins Imac HP 555s, Amberlite IRA 900 (Rohm&Hass) and Purolite A860S (Purolite Co) were eluted using either NaCI, zinc and nickel cyanides, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or acid thiourea solutions. The results indicate that saline solutions are effective only with polyacrylic resins (Purolite A860S), failing to desorb the metals, specially the nickel cyanocomplex, loaded on polystyrene-based resins. Cyanide solutions of both zinc and nickel are capable of eluting over 90% of the loaded metals. In contact with pure acid' solutions, iron precipitates onto the resin beads, as Cu(II) ferrous cyanideCu2Fe(CN)6.xH20. Thiourea is able to elute all the three metal cyanocomplexes owing to the increased solubility of copper cyanocomplexes in the presence of this complexing agent. The results demonstrate that a universal eluant is not available and the selection of the most appropriate resin-elution procedure should be based on the specific features of the system under consideration

Le Ministère des Richesses naturelles du Québec has continued development work on the process/or direct reaction 0/sodium carbonate with lithium-bearing silicates(Canadian Patent No. 643,843). Recent process improvements have involved continuous pressure leaching, rather than batch leaching, and higher solution concentrations (over 55 g/l Li2CO3. These improvements have been demonstrated on a pilot scale operating on decrepitated spodumene from the Sullivan Mining Group's Quebec deposit. The new process is expected to be very competitive with the conventional sulphuric acid route. The improved flowsheet and main process steps will be described along with pilot-plant results.

Because of the absence of an iron-producing industry, the Pacific Northwest is working under an economic handicap. This is particularly apparent in the gray-iron-foundry industry because of the high price of pig iron imported from foreign sources or shipped in from producing ?areas within the United States. The high prices and sometimes short supply of ferrous metal products has put a brake on industrialization, which has been only partly compensated by the availability of cheap electric power. The economic condition of the gray-iron-foundry industry could be improved by establishing a small iron-producing industry based on the locally available ores. Moreover, establishing a local iron smelter would create a market for resources now dormant. Low-grade ores of manganese, chromium, and nickel would become usable in industry when combined with the iron ore from Scappoose. Pig iron produced in even limited quantities would level out the fluctuation in supply. The ore deposits, being small, would not supply enough pig iron to satisfy the entire demand. This condition necessitates designing special pig irons that will carry abnormally high proportions of scrap in the cupola charge.

Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

Using a Jarrell-Ash "Compact" direct reading spectrometer, analyses were made of a wide variety of rocks ranging from acidic to ultrabasic types. Statistical evaluation suggests that accuracies comparable with the values obtained by the rapid chemical methods used by the United States Geological Survey will be obtained.The spectrographic method involves fusion of the rock with lithium tetraborate, strontium being incorporated in the flux as the internal standard. The resulting bead is ground with graphite and pressed into a pellet. The counts obtained on two standard pellets are used to correct for instrumental drift.Background readings are made at 4109 Å and corrections for background are made to all lines. Corrections for matrix interferences, both by chemical suppression and optical enhancement, are made. The three corrections of drift, background, and matrix are incorporated into one general expression which has been programmed on magnetic cards, each element requiring a separate card. The cards are placed individually into a desk top computer (an Olivetti Programma 101), which enables true counts to be calculated from the "readout" counts, and the element concentration is then obtained from computer-printed tables by referring to the appropriate value of true counts versus concentration. These tables were prepared by making a polynomial regression analysis of the spectrographic results from 50 standard and analysed samples, a curve of best fit being chosen for each element.The regression coefficients, usually of a fourth or fifth degree equation, together with other relevant data, were fed into a large computer, programmed to print out tables of concentration versus true counts. This technique enables the results obtained to be based on mathematically-derived values rather than on hand-drawn calibration graphs, giving greater inherent accuracy. The technique has been shown to give results of good accuracy and acceptable precision suitable for many geological and geochemical exploration programmes involving the analysis of many rock samples of different types.

The Arctic is a region of special economic, geopolitical, research, socio-ethnic, and defense interests of both Russia and other countries of the Arctic zone. Introduction of innovation technologies at ore-processing factories is a direct responsibility of the state and this problem should be solved on the basis of coordination of interests of different stakeholders. The task of elaboration of scientific principles of rational state regulation in the North is very topical. Innovations require considerable investments first of all from private capital. However as an investment object innovations are not attractive for investors as they require large expenditures for long-term projects, and they are connected to high risks because market incentives form striving to get quick profits of private companies and result in a certain behaviour strategy while innovations need ?long money?. Under such conditions without state regulation of investment and innovation activities development of the mining sector in the Arctic practically has no prospects. At innovation development of mining enterprises economic growth is provided at the expense of active state innovation activities. The elaborated strategy of ore-processing enterprises should correspond to the modern paradigm of the ore-processing industry development which is not only for extraction of minerals but also for multi-profile structure having comprehensive use of the resources on the rational basis intended for rational complex utilization of mineral resources of the AZR which by the definition includes maximally full use of the whole aggregate of resources on the economically rational basis with obligatory environmental with resource reproductive and socio-economic functions and deterrents. The main principle of creation of innovation technologies is to obtain more products of higher quality with minimal costs. This allows increasing ?productivity of the resources? several times. This principle makes increasing productivity of the resources the most important and in this case efficiency of use of the resources brings extra profits at the expense of lack of new costs such as payment for protection and utilization of wastes. According to the economic theory only ratio between demand and supply is able to fix optimal proportions in economy and to give necessary signals for investment activities of mining enterprises. In this context market for minerals and increase of mineral resources productivity do not create incentives for investment activities without which neither sustainable economic growth nor solution of macroeconomic tasks are possible. Nevertheless countries should not reject this idea in spite of economic efficiency of the enterprises. Extraction degree of useful components and especially oil in the Arctic zone is one of the lowest in the world. This can lead to crisis of oil industry and other mining sectors. The reason for that is lack of a state policy of realization of innovation technologies in the mining sector in the Arctic.

During the Palaeoproterozoic, a large number of granitic intrusions were emplaced in the various parts of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (PCG). In the central region, the granitic magmatism is represented either by the coalesced mass, eg the Cullen Batholith, or individual plutons such as the Mount Bundey Granite which together with the Mount Goyder Syenite intrude the metasedimentary strata, causing wide spread contact aureoles. Some of these granitic intrusions are temporally and genetically related to gold (and less commonly base-metals) mineralisation present in the adjacent metasediments. These plutons are characterised by the presence of biotite and homblende which appear late in the paragenetic sequence. Electron microprobe analyses of biotite and homblende show that these minerals are poorly to moderately zoned. Biotites are characterised by a decrease in Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios when plotted against AIVI. Similarly a modest decrease in Ti from centre to the margins of the biotite crystals has also been observed. Furthermore, an increase in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios from centre to the margins as well as in mafic to felsic rocks is also apparent. On the other hand, homblendes from the granitic bodies display less well marked trends and are poorly zoned. However, they show systematic increases in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios, and decreases in Fe, Al"' and Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, when plotted against Si. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered samples of the plutons give results characterised by high values ranging from 0.8 x 10-4 to 2.0 x 10-3 emu/g which place the granites in magnetite- series field. This indicates that the oxidation state of the magma was high during crystallisation. The range of chemical compositions of the mafic phases indicates a rise in the oxidation state of the magma as it progressively became saturated in H20-volatiles and other metals, not partitioned into the earlier crystallised phases in the final stages of magma consolidation. These variations in chemical compositions also indicate that initially fOz was high and became progressively higher during fractional crystallisation of magmas; this subsequently led to the emanation of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralisation in the adjacent metasediments.

The relative influences of sinter mineralogy, sintering temperature, solid and pore macro- and microstructure on iron ore sinter physical strength are not yet fully understood. Whilst a range of analysis techniques have been used by researchers to evaluate sinter physical properties and sinter mineralogy, none have been able to directly link sinter mineralogy and physical strength under controlled conditions. CSIRO has developed a unique laboratory method to study the fundamental melting properties of fine iron ores in a laboratory furnace under a controlled temperature and gas atmosphere environment designed to simulate the industrial sintering process. Compacted tablet samples for a 0.41 per cent and a 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series were fired in a tube furnace at various temperatures, cooled, then tumbled using a modified Bond abrasion test apparatus to determine a relative tumble index (TI) at each temperature. Quantitative XRD (QXRD) analysis was then carried out on the tumbled samples and optical image analysis (OIA) was conducted on polished sections of a separately fired compact in each case. The amount of total SFCA was found to decrease with increasing firing temperature for both alumina series with the total amount of SFCA higher in the 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series compared to 0.41 per cent Al2O3 series samples. The increase in the amount of magnetite and hematite with increasing firing temperature was largely at the expense of a decrease in total SFCA. Overall, there was good agreement between the quantitative mineralogy determined from QXRD versus OIA for SFCA, hematite and magnetite. Qualitative analysis of high magnification images of the sinter correlated with both the OIA and QXRD results.
