Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.

The 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone has been widely used as a personal sampler for size selective sampling of particles within the respirable range (Dp < 10 gm). Because of their inertia, the particles are unable to follow the swirling flow (outer vortex) within the cyclone. The particles migrate to the bottom of the cyclone, depending on their size, and get trapped into the inner vortex which leads to an eventual blow-off from the top of the cyclone. By measuring the size distribution of the particles in the free stream and in the collected sample, the aspiration efficiency of the cyclone can be calculated. Velocity difference between the free stream and sampling velocity. Inlet orientation, particle impaction and deposition, particle inertia and free stream turbulence result in the departure of the aspiration efficiency from unity and this, in turn, leads to inlet bias. Although the effect of inlet bias on sampling efficiency has been investigated in past, the results lack detailed information and show only some general trend. In this effort, a systematic, in-depth experimental work on the effect of inlet bias on the sampling efficiency has been undertaken using non-intrusive Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and impactors.

On Oct. 1-3, SME?s Twin Cities chapter (SME TC), in cooperation with the University of Minnesota ? Duluth?s Precambrian Research Center (UMD-PRC), cohosted a symposium on silica sand mining and processing. The conference was held at the Earle Brown Heritage Center near Minneapolis. The symposium was followed by a day-long field trip to operating mines, processing plants and loading facilities located in southwestern Wisconsin. Speakers and attendees at the symposium included university professors, industry experts, regulators, mining company representatives, equipment suppliers, consulting engineers and service companies. Approximately 320 people attended the conference. In addition, about 50 people who oppose mine development and the oil and gas industry showed up to voice their displeasure with the event and those companies that operate in this space.

To ensure the continued growth and economic viability of the Western coal industry, both in the domestic and inter- national markets, it is essential for the industry to become more creative and active in confronting the most serious obstacle in this objective; and that is, the inherently long distances which Western coal must be transported inland to reach its major markets. Figure 1 shows the 1982 coal consumption by state for those states where Western coal was consumed. (Except as noted in this paper, Western coal producing states are defined as Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. Any exceptions used will have only an insignificant effect on the content of the paper). This figure illustrates the long distances that are required for Western coal to reach its markets. The total production for 1982 from the Western coal producing states was approximately 220 million tons, of which only 85 million tons was consumed within the boundaries of these states. The remainder was transported to markets outside the area. This map also shows, based strictly on the consumption of the states to which Western coal was shipped during 1982 and not considering other factors which are involved in the marketing of coal, the total market potential of Western coal would amount to a total of 445 million tons. This does not include export coal from the West Coast, which is now estimated to be less than 2 million tons for 1983. In 1980, it had been estimated that by 1985 the West Coast exports would have been at least 10 million tons per year, which will not be attained.

"The Matte Separation plant at Inco's Copper Cliff Smelter Complex is described. The continuing implementation of flotation column technology in the flowsheet in various applications is reviewed. Comparative studies on 0.038, 0.10, 1.1 and 1.8 m diameter columns have been carried out. It was demonstrated that consistent metallurgical performance was obtained with both pilot- and plant-scale units. Grade-recovery relationships for plant columns can be predicted with confidence from data obtained from test equipment. The work indicates further areas of the flowsheet in which columns present an attractive alternative to conventional cells. INCO’s MATTE SEPARATION PROCESSNickel concentrate from Inco’s Sudbury area mills has been processed in the Copper Cliff smelter for sixty years. Prior to that, Sudbury ores had been smelted directly. Historically, copper-nickel separation from smelter converter matte was achieved by the classical Orford process. In the mid-1940s Inco developed an improved separation scheme based on mineral processing methods, the Matte Separation Process. A generalized Copper Cliff Smelter Complex flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.Iron sulfide and gangue contained in the nickel concentrate are rejected in the smelting-converting process. The molten product, typically containing 50% Ni, 25% CU and 22% s, is cast at about 1000 ºC, into floor moulds and allowed to slowly cool for four days. During this period nickel sulfide (heazlewoodite, Ni,S,), copper sulfide (chalcocite, cu,S) and a copper-nickel metallic alloy precipitate and form a coarse grain structure that is amenable to separation by physical means. The phase chemistry of this system has been described previously by Sproule et al (1). This matte then becomes the feed to the Matte Separation Process.A simplified block flowsheet of the Matte Separation Process is shown in Figure 2. Matte ingots, typically weighing 20 tonnes each, are broken and crushed in a three stage crushing plant to approximately minus 0.01 m and conveyed to the Matte Separation building. Grinding is carried out in two parallel circuits each consisting of a rod and ball mill in series producing a flotation feed which is 65% minus 44 microns. Typical throughput of each grinding circuit is 650 tonnes/day. The metallic fraction of the feed is recovered by magnetic separation. This product, containing about 66% Ni and 15% CU, is a major component of the feed to the Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery."

Oversize boulders in mines and quarries must be broken for waste disposal or further processing of ore. Early methods involved drilling and "shooting" or using a drop ball of sufficient weight to accomplish the purpose. The first "high-energy" hammers for breaking concrete or boulders were pneumatically operated. Blow energy was limited by valving and air pressure. However, smaller boulders of lower compressive strength could be broken. A hydraulic excavator-backhoe type machine was required for either a drop ball or hammer. Standard practice was to break oversize boulders in the pit before hauling to the grizzly or crusher. Generally, quarry boulders were not valuable enough for further processing. Quarry roads were lined with oversize boulders. As safety requirements were advanced, "drill and blast" for boulders was ruled out.

Hillgrove, situated on the New England plateau of New South Wales, is an area rich in history and resources. Key resources are predominantly antimony, gold and scheelite and the area surrounding the historical field is environmentally sensitive and topographically challenging. Since acquiring the Hillgrove leases, Straits Hillgrove Gold has undertaken a significant exploration program on these historical mining areas with the goal to return the field to production. This exploration program has enabled Straits to significantly increase the resource base and has subsequently enabled the planned redevelopment of Hillgrove to be realised. In October 2006, installation of mining infrastructure and the initial stripping of existing development had commenced. To successfully redevelop Hillgrove, Straits has had to adopt a highly mechanised, trackless, diesel mining operation which will see the production rate commence at an initial rate of 250 kt/a of ore from a narrow vein environment. This ore will be processed on site to produce antimony metal, gold bullion and a scheelite concentrate.

"Abstract-Diesel emission particles (DEP) from an engine operating on the Federal Test Procedure VDC were dispersed in an aqueous mixture of dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL). a major component of pulmonary surfactant and saline and were tested for genotoxicity using the unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) assay with autoradiography techniques in cultured Chinese hamster lung cells. A DEP sample from the same source was dispersed in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and subjected to the same assay. Both dispersions (in DPL and DMSO) were found to induce UDS in a dose-related manner. After separation of the sample into supernatant and sediment fractions. the activity of the DEP sample was found to reside in the supernatant fraction for the DMSO-dispersed sample; and in the sedimentary fraction for the surfactant-dispersed sample. These findings further indicate that genotoxic activity associated with DEP inhaled into the lung may become bioavailable through the dispersion properties of pulmonary surfactant components.INTRODUCTIONTHE mutagenicity of diesel emission particles (DEP) has been studied intensively (LEWTAS and WILLIAMS, 1986). Carcinogenic effects of diesel exhaust in exposed animals have been reviewed (NIOSH, 1988) and an evaluation of carcinogenic risks to humans from diesel engine exhausts has been published (IARC, 1989). Using components of pulmonary surfactant such as dipalmitoyl lecithin (D PL), dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) or dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) dispersed in physiological saline, we have previously shown that diesel soots express mutagenic activities in the Salmonella histidine reversion assay system and in the sister chromatid exchange assay using the cultured Chinese hamster lung (V79) cells. Mutagenic activity of diesel soots dispersed in DPL, DPPE and DPPA was quantitatively comparable to and in some cases greater than, the activity expressed by an equal mass of soot extracted by dichloromethane-dimethyl sulphoxide (DCM-DMSO) (WALLACE et al., 1989).Unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) is accepted and frequently included, as one of the tests in the battery of assays used to assess carcinogenic-mutagenic potential -of chemicals (MITCHELL et al., 1983). In this study, induction of UDS in V79 cells by DEP, dispersed in the major component of pulmonary surfactant DPL, was carried out. The purpose of this study is to validate the suggestion generated from our previous work that mutagens associated with inhaled particles may be dispersed or solubilized in the phospholipid component of pulmonary surfactant and become active in such a phase (WALLACE er al., 1989) and to test the fractionated DEP sample using UDS assay for a more complete evaluation of its genotoxicity."

The production of synthetic rutile from ilmenite using hydrochloric acid leaching is investigated. Previously published data is used to comment on the optimum process conditions. It is shown that the most important aspect to consider is the maximisation of impurity dissolution and the minimisation of titanium losses.

While we are all aware of the need for reclamation of mine sites, few managers and engineers seem to be aware that good reclamation begins with the earliest plans for mining and processing of ores. Far too often the attitude that reclamation is an add-on to worry about at the end of the mining process dominates the thinking of mine engineers and management, A common result is that the reclamationist can be faced with mining and waste disposal designs that are nearly impossible to deal with effectively from an ecological perspective. Everyone of us has been victimized by the down time and maintainence cost that resulted from the purchase of an outwardly attractive, but poorly designed piece of equipment. When confronted by design defects in equipment, a distraught owner can always trade it in, call a consumer advocate, or follow up one of the "lemon laws" at either the federal or state level. A poorly designed mine for reclamation purposes usually cannot be treated either with ease or cost effectiveness. Good reclamation can be effectively prevented by the designs used when the mine was planned. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the experiences our firm has had with reclamation projects at mines in the Upper Midwest as these were influenced or controlled by mine design decisions. My aim is to sensitize mine planners and managers to planning processes they should consider, and hopefully use, early in the mining process to assure successful reclamation during and after mining. Many of the examples I will cite are from experience gained at the recently closed Jackson County Iron Company taconite operation at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Vern Metzger, mine manager at JCIC, for his unflagging support of good reclamation practices, employee training programs (which have included reclamation techniques), and his forebearance to put up with our group of ecologists. I realize that this was a time when there were significant internal and external pressures to cut all costs including reclamation efforts. The collaboration has been successful as you will soon see.

A promising source for the extraction of rare metals and REEs in Russia is the eudialyte ores of the Lovozero deposit, which do not contain active uranium components. The eudialyte ore reserves of the Lovozero Massif are considered virtually unlimited and therefore have the potential to become a primary source of a number of rare and rare earth metals. The goal of this study was to comprehensively examine the effect of the parameters of high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on the leaching performance of eudialyte concentrate and the selective separation of zirconium and REEs from productive solutions. Using scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy, the mechanism behind the intensification of acidic dissolution of eudialyte as a result of pretreatment with energy impacts was described. During the HPEMP treatment, weakening and destruction of the eudialyte surface was observed, which at the substructural level is expressed in the deformation and local destruction of Si10O27, Si9MO30 resulting in formation of microcracks. During the DBD treatment, the formation of characteristic defects was observed in the form of imprints of dielectric breakdown microchannels and individual mineral fragments. Pretreatment of eudialyte concentrate using HPEMP made it possible to increase the recovery of zirconium into the pregnant solution of leaching by 3.4–4.3 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.9 per cent) and by 4.1 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.6 per cent) when using DBD. The increase in the total recovery of REEs was 1.2–1.8 per cent (from 87.7 per cent to 89.2 per cent). The effect of pH values, solution temperature, initial concentrations of valuable components on the successive recovery performance of zirconium and REEs from the pregnant solutions nitric from the acid leaching of eudialyte concentrate by chemical precipitation was examined. The possibility of selective separation of the zirconium product and rare earth elements with a zirconium recovery of 99.95 per cent and a REE recovery of 87.5 per cent was established. REE loss with the zirconium product was 8.0 per cent and 4.5 per cent with the spent pregnant solution.

Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program which was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied using small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of the delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of the delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth and amount of detonating cord and cover.

This paper presents the results from research undertaken in the CSIRO-funded Mineral Futures Collaboration Cluster on developing a future vision for the mining and minerals industry – Vision 2040 – in which the industry proactively contributes to long-term benefit for communities and the nation. Our research finds that Australia is currently experiencing mining-led prosperity due to high commodity prices, yet underlying this are challenges for maintaining market share due to lower productivity from extracting lower grade, more remote and complex ores. Whilst much focus has been on developing new technologies for finding and processing such ores, this paper assesses these activities, together with policy and market innovations in the context of needing to strengthen social, environmental and financial capital for long-term benefit. Vision 2010 sees mining activities linked to systems that are net providers of clean water, energy and ecosystem services, rather than minimising negative impacts alone; sovereign wealth funds are used to harness current prosperity for future innovation. Using a case study in lithium and comparisons to iron/steel, coal and copper – we illustrate the opportunities for new technology, policy and market innovations to link the mining and minerals sector in Australia to more sustainable patterns of production, consumption and prosperity.

"The preservation of historic buildings is not only essential to the understanding of our national heritage, but it is also environmentally responsible to adapt existing buildings to compatible new uses. With this perspective, the American Enterprise Institute began exploring options to expand the newly acquired Andrew Mellon Building, located at 1785 Massachusetts Ave. NW in Washington, D.C., without causing any harm to the Beaux Arts style limestone façade and its plaster interiors. The building is a National Historical Landmark, but its 72,000 sq ft (6,690 sq m) of usable floor space did not meet the needs of its new owner. The building perimeter is very near the property line, so horizontal expansion was not possible. Adding height to the building was not an option, as this would have altered the historic nature of the building exterior. The only feasible option that could provide the desired floor space was to add a new floor underneath the existing structure. By adding a level beneath the existing building, an additional 28,000 sq ft (2,601 sq m) of floor space could be produced.Berkel & Company Contractors was chosen as the deep foundation/shoring contractor tasked with ensuring that the existing structure was stable and remained undamaged during the excavation and construction of the new lower level. To accomplish this, Berkel provided a shoring system that would act as both excavation support and permanent deep foundation elements for the final structure.Preservation of the existing limestone façade and plaster interiors was critical to the success of the project, as additional foundation settlements could damage these irreplaceable building components. Project specifications, therefore, included very stringent limits for foundation settlements. The maximum allowable total settlement for all existing building walls and columns was ¼ in (6 mm) for the duration of the project."

AN electronic data-processing system is described which permits rapid, accurate, low-cost processing of strain-dependent damping data utilizing equipment normally available within the service facilities of most large laboratories. On analyzing the record of a stress-dependent damping test, the operator usually measures the double amplitudes at several points on the decay curve. The logarithmic decrement is then calculated for decay between consecutive amplitudes. These values of 6 are plotted against the corresponding maximum surface shear stress, T, which is proportional to the average of the two amplitudes between which is calculated: where d is the specimen diameter. The period of the vibration is not necessarily constant during decay; thus, each cycle must be counted. A decay curve may extend to, perhaps, 1000 cycles, and at least two curves are always obtained for each specimen or set of conditions. It can, therefore, be seen that manual analysis of decay curves is both tedious and costly in terms of man-hours. The titanium-rich portion of the Ti-Pd system was investigated from 0 to 75 wt pct Pd by metallo-graphic and X-ray techniques. A 0 eutectoid occurs at 24 wt pct Pd and 1190°F. Two compoutzds are indicated in the region below 75 wt pct Pd, Ti,Pd and Ti2Pd3. The solubility of palladium its a titanium is low, probably less than 1 pct. In 1960 Rudnitskii and Birunl published a complete version of the Ti-Pd phase diagram. However, their work was in disagreement with the earlier literature in that they reported only one inter metallic compound, whereas three had been reported earlier. In view of these discrepancies, it was therefore necessary to redetermine those portions of the diagram of immediate interest. The following account describes our work on the system over the range of 0 to 75 wt pct Pd. MATERIALS AND METHODS Distilled titanium sponge and elemental palladium were used in the formulation of the alloys; the chemistry of these materials is detailed in Table I. The alloys were prepared as 10 to 50 g blended compacts that were melted into buttons by arc melting under gettered argon on a water-cooled copper hearth. Weighing of the ingredients before and after melting showed that negligible weight changes occurred. Therefore, no analyses were undertaken and the compositions of all alloys are nominal. All alloys were fabricated by hot rolling at 1700°F to 0.070-in.-thick sheet. Scale was removed by sandblasting and pickling in a 5 pct HF-35 pct HNO,, balance H20 solution. For metallographic examination, specimens were mounted after heat treatment transverse to the rolling direction, ground on silicon carbide papers of increasing fineness to 600 grit, and then electro-polished using a solution containing 600 ml me-thanol, 60 ml perchloric acid, 360 ml butyl cello-solve, and 2 ml "Solvent X". Unless otherwise specified, etching of alloys containing up to 42 pct Pd was carried out by swabbing with a 12 pct HN03-1 pct HF aqueous etch where a bright etch was required, or by a 1 pct hydrofluoric in saturated oxalic acid solution where contrast between phases was required. The Ti-52.8 Pd alloy was etched with a solution of 25 ml HF, 40 ml glycerine, 35 ml methanol, and 18 g benzalkonium chloride. For X-ray examination, 1/2-in.-square speci- mens of sheet were mounted flat in a standard 1-in. metallographic mount and ground and polished as above. X-ray diffraction was performed using a Norelco type 12045 Diffractometer, employing CuKa radiation with a nickel filter at 40 kv and 20 ma. Specimens were rotated about the sheet normal during exposure. Although this procedure did not remove the effects of sheet texture from the relative intensities, it had the advantage that oxidation or contaminants entering during preparation of powder samples could not confuse the patterns obtained. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fig. 1 illustrates the Ti-Pd phase diagram according to Rudnitskii and Birunl with the work of the present authors superimposed. Both interpretations agree that the system is of the 0 -eutectoid type with an extensive 0-phase field, and that the eutectoid temperature is just below 1200°F. There is also agreement that the solubility of palladium in a titanium is restricted. Our work would indicate that the a solubility of palladium is low, probably less than 1 pct. However, whereas Rudnitskii and Birunl place the eutectoid composition at 41 wt pct Pd, this investigation shows it to be at about 24 wt pct Pd. Moreover, this investigation confirms the existence of compounds at Ti2Pd and Ti2Pd3, whereas Rudnitskii and Birun report only a single Berthol-lide phase covering the TiPd to TiPd, range. Laves et a1.&apos; and Wallbaum, whose work was summarized by Maykuth , reported the existence of Ti2Pd3 and TiPd, in addition to Ti2Pd. Strategic and tactical planning are both required in the mining industry but have completely different objectives and require different environments. If these are not fully understood, then the best value for a mining operation may not be realized. This paper examines the differences in these approaches and how they interface in the mining environment. The objectives, content, skills required and the implied management issues for these two components are examined with the hope that this will assist management and the planning teams in defining their respective roles and expectations. The opinions are those of the author based on his experience on several mining operations and projects.

THE accuracy with which grade and tonnage of a mineral deposit may be calculated from diamond-drill assays is dependent upon: (I) the reliability of core and sludge samples and (2) the validity of methods used in grade and tonnage calculations. Limitations imposed by drilling and sampling preclude elaborate methods of computation. In adjusting core and sludge assays the importance assigned the core and sludge samples may be based on either the respective weights recovered or the respective volumes represented by each. Only when core and sludge recoveries are poor do discrepancies between adjusted assays calculated by these two methods develop, in which case the "weight" method gives emphasis to the core sample and the "volume" method gives emphasis to the sludge sample. When the sludge suffers classification within the drill hole, the weight method gives more accurate results; when the sludge sample suffers no classification, the volume method gives more accurate results. Any drilling campaign offers a compromise between desired accuracy on the one hand and expediency, limited time, money, or facilities on the other. Since the determination of grade and tonnage is an approximation at best, a proper basis for their computation requires a knowledge of the limitations imposed by all phases of work upon which the calculations depend. A rational basis for coordination of these phases of work requires determination of: (I) the degree of accuracy desired, as a function of the object of examination; (2) the degree of accuracy attainable, as a function of the limitations imposed in the drilling and sampling program; and (3) the validity of method to be used in calculating grade and tonnage from core and sludge assays. This paper presents results of a comparison made between two commonly used methods of adjusting core and sludge assays, the assumptions upon which these methods are based, and the interrelationship of the phases of work upon which these calculations are dependent. OBJECT OF EXAMINATION The purpose of prospecting any mineral deposit is to secure sufficient samples from which ore grade and tonnage may be calculated. Any mine examination, preliminary or formal, has a definite purpose, although its scope may be limited or broad. The type of examination to be conducted is dependent, therefore, upon the reason for instituting the investigation; its scope and thoroughness are directly related to economic considerations. It is highly desirable, therefore, that before starting a drilling campaign a complete understanding of the extent of examination and desired degree of accuracy be determined as a means of simplifying the drilling program and unifying the relative degree of

Discussion by M.R. Yalamanchili and J.D. Miller The authors, M. S. Celik et al., should be recognized for their efforts to describe the flotation behavior of boron minerals. In the case of borax and other soluble salt minerals, analysis of the flotation chemistry has been difficult because of the high ionic strengths associated with these soluble salt systems. However, considerable progress has been made in this area, and recently a surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model was proposed by Miller and his coworkers to explain the collector adsorption phenomena observed in soluble salt flotation systems (Milleret al, 1992; Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994; Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994a: Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994b). In this work, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines was established on the basis of nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis (Miller et al., 1992). Generally, these results are what would be expected from the simplified lattice-ionhydration theory. This electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble salt flotation systems indicates that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation/bubble attachment results for 21 different alkali halides (Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Yalamanchili and Miller, I994b) confirmed that the flotation response of soluble salt minerals with weak electrolyte collectors can best be explained by the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids rather than by the adsorption collector ions and/or neutral molecular dipoles as originally suggested by many researchers (Fuerstenau and Fuerstenau, 1957; Schubert, 1967; Roman et al., 1968). In addition, the flotation of certain alkali oxyanions (Pizarro et al., 1993) and double salts such as schoenite and kainite can be explained by the same collector colloid adsorption mechanism (Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The borax flotation results reported by Celik et al. need to be examined in terms of the above mentioned surface charge/ collector colloid adsorption model. Unfortunately, the authors seem to be unaware of this recent work that nicely describes soluble salt flotation with weak electrolyte type collectors such as amines and carboxylates. In view of our past work, the flotation characteristics of borax were of particular interest, and, in this regard, the results of dodecyl amine flotation of borax reported by Celik et al. have been examined in further detail in the light of experimental results from our laboratory. In our research, a vacuum flotation technique was used to study the flotation response of borax (Na2B407.10H20), which has a solubility of 39 g/L at 25 °C) with dodecyl amine hydrochloride as collector. These chemicals were purchased from Eastman Kodak and used as received. Saturated solutions of borax at desired pH values were prepared by continuously stirring the salt solutions over a period of about 10 hrs. It should be mentioned that the conditioning time to achieve equilibrium is an important variable and can significantly change the flotation response of some soluble salts (Yalamanchili et al., 1993). Collector was added to the saturated borax solutions containing about one gram of 100x 150 mesh borax particles, and conditioning was done for about 20 minutes prior to flotation. The borax flotation recoveries from saturated brine are presented in Fig. 1 as a function of collector addition at the natural pH of 9.3, as reported both by Celik et al. and as measured in our laboratory. In addition, the region of precipitation for the dodecyl amine hydroborate is included in Fig. 1. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that the flotation response curves are separated by about one order of magnitude in R12NH3CI collector addition. The flotation results of Celik et al. show that the maximum borax recoveries can be obtained below the solubility limit of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector. However, in our experiments borax flotation seems to occur only after the precipitation of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector as might be expected from the collector colloid adsorption model (Yalamanchili et al., 1993) if borax were negatively charged. Further analysis by nonequilibrium and equilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements for borax indicates that borax is negatively charged at the natural pH of 9.3, as discussed below. The reliability of the nonequilibrium electrophoretic measurements has been demonstrated previously for alkali halides and alkali oxyanions (Miller et al., 1992; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The equilibrium and nonequlibrium electrophoretic measurements for borax were found to be consistent and are presented in Table 1. These results provide clear evidence that borax carries a negative surface charge in its saturated brine (pH 9.3), and the sign of the surface charge of borax reverses and becomes positive if the pH is reduced to 8.6.
