Stress-corrosion cracking of copper-base alloys is of considerable importance and has been the subject of many investigations which employed various accelerated tests and long-time service tests. The outstand¬ing accelerated tests used are variations of either the mercury cracking test reported by Rogers in 1905( 1)2 or the ammonia test reported in 1910(2). The ease of applica¬tion of the mercury test is probably the reason industry adopted it. Subsequent investigation of this test(3,4) revealed that a minimum threshold stress was necessary before mercury cracking could develop. Since season cracking has been found in some instances in caliber 0.3o ammunition which has passed the mercury test, it is evident that the threshold stress value of the mercury test may be too high for dis¬tinguishing between acceptable and un¬acceptable caliber 0.30 cartridge cases. This condition has naturally led to the study of an ammonia test with its ability to cause cracks with almost any stress level. But the lack of a definite threshold value means that standards are necessary for evaluating the results of the ammonia test.

Adrian is an Australian who graduated in 1973 with an honors degree in geology from Newcastle University, New South Wales. His extensive international experience has spanned exploration, project development, and operations for both large and small companies in Australasia, Southeast Asia, North and South America, and Africa. Adrian has been with the Golden Star group of companies for four years and he is responsible for all exploration activity. ABSTRACT Golden Star acquired the rights to the Omai prospect in 1985 at a time when the country of Guyana was out of favor with the exploration fraternity. Subsequently in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Golden Star acquired exploration properties in Suriname and French Guiana well ahead of its competitors. Golden Star's strategy entailed identifying windows of opportunity and aggressively pursuing them. We also recognized that the Guiana Shield hosted a significant area of highly prospective greenstones which were comparable in metallogenic potential to similar terrains in eastern Canada, western Australia and west Africa. The geological skills Golden Star developed and the exploration techniques employed to explore deeply weathered rocks are described. The paper highlights the key elements of Golden Star's strategy and illustrates how some of the milestones reached by the company led Golden Star to establish an enviable portfolio of gold and diamond properties in the Guiana Shield.

Collection, preparation, and analysis of blasthole chippings is expensive. Frequently, interpolation of grades at unsampled locations is considered using techniques like kriging. A pre-requisite for kriging is that an experimental variogram is established. In order to assess the quality of the experimental variogram, a measure is developed in this paper. The measure is derived from analysis of the time-honoured expression relating the variance, semivariance, and covariance. It reflects the weighted average deviation of the summed semivariance and covariance from the biased variance. The proposed measure allows assessment of the influence of key variables on the quality of the variogram. Using simulated data, it follows that the quality improves with an increasing number of samples, increasing density of the sampled locations, increasing regularity of the sampling pattern, and increasing uniformity of grades in the absence of correlation. Application to real data shows that the minimum number of samples could coincide with a marked decrease in the value of the measure. Establishing a threshold value is subject to further research. This paper presents a cyclic queueing model that evaluates the productivity of a shovel-truck materials haulage system. For a cyclic queueing problem with exponentially distributed service times, a cyclic queueing model provides exact solutions in a fraction of the time that simulation takes to produce an approximate solution. The model is applied to an example problem, and the results are validated with simulation. Simulation is used to show that the assumption of exponentially distributed service times and steady state are not serious problems. A cyclic queueing model can be used to quickly obtain an accurate assessment of the productivity of a shovel-truck system.

Much research effort has been spent in attempting to reduce the high energy costs in grinding, but relatively little in developing methods to enhance the liberation of the minerals from each other. This paper presents some ideas on the nature and role of grain boundaries in mineral assemblies, and their influence on the propagation of cracks through the rock. It is argued that if the mechanisms of fracture are more clearly understood, crack propagation may be controlled in such a way that intergranular fracture dominates breakage, producing less fines and a higher degree of liberation.

The interactions between apatite and hematite were studied through zeta potential and stability experiments, for this paper. The zeta potential measurements were conducted in both background electrolyte and mineral supernatants. The difference in electrokinetic properties of minerals in the presence and absence of supernatant was explained in terms of the dissolution of minerals and the subsequent readsorption of dissolved species at the mineral-water interface. The stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems were also performed to identify the extent of interaction between apatite and hematite upon their direct contact. The results from stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems indicate that there is an interaction between apatite and hematite. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low-profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full-scale model mine using a continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters tested included mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback, and combinations of scrubber, and directional or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 20-ft blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 20-ft blowing results.

This report (part 3 of a five-part series) presents computer programs for evaluating moments and moment relationships of the generalized probability distributions extended or developed in parts I and 2. The principal program is for evaluating the first three moments and moment relationships of the compound-multinomial distribution for finite as well as for infinite populations. This is the generalized distribution for sampling to some amount of items per sample. Another program is for evaluating the first four moments, the moments of the mean, and the moment relationships of the multinomial and generalized hypergeometric distributions. This is a general moment program in sampling to some number of items per sample or for sampling to some number of samples. This program will accept either ungrouped data, frequency data, or probability data.

Choosing the correct delay time for many blasting applications is an important and critical blast design parameter for controlling fragmentation, muckpile shape, swell, digability, throw, ground vibration and airblast. BAl and its affiliates have monitored thousands of full scale blasts in a variety of field conditions, spanning over 15 countries, with sophisticated blast monitoring instrumentation. In some blast environments, a small change in the choice of delay times used had a dramatic and pronounced effect on the overall blast results. In other blast environments, large changes in the choice of delays used had absolutely no effect on the final results in terms of specific outputs. In environments which were sensitive to the delay selection, the type of explosive, dynamic response time of the rock mass (TMIN), integrity of the material, burden and rock mass geometry, all played a very important ,role.

Do large-scale projects in mining and smelting start up and achieve expected capacity on schedule? In most cases not. Regardless of worldwide location, company know-how, or financial backing, unforeseen delays occur. A comprehensive CRA study for the World Bank shows that delays are the rule, not the exception, in most mining and smelting projects. When delays are not factored into analysis and planning, financial projections are, literally, not to be believed. Returns on investment will seldom achieve their targeted level because of startup delays. "The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"

This Bureau of Mines report presents a cost estimate of the Bayer process, which is used for virtually all cell-grade alumina production. The report will serve as a reference point to determine the economic merits of processes that have evolved from Bureau of Mines investigations on technology for producing alumina from domestic nonbauxitic raw materials. The Bayer process involves dissolving the alumina present in bauxite in a caustic solution at high temperature and pressure. After the un- dissolved impurities are removed, the solution is seeded to produce an alumina trihydrate precipitate. This precipitate is filtered, washed, and calcined to produce the cell-grade alumina product. This cost estimate is for a plant producing 1 million tons of alumina per year. The estimated operating cost is approximately $250 per ton of alumina.

The equilibrium experiments between the FeO-SiO2-MnO-TiO2-V2O3-Cr2O3-MgO slag system and solid pure iron were performed to investigate the vanadium and chromium distribution ratio under Ar atmosphere. The influence of w(FeO), w(V2O3) and w(Cr2O3) in slag on vanadium and chromium distribution ratios were studied at 1653 K. The experimental results were compared with calculated distribution ratios based on molecule and ions coexistence theory. Both of them showed that higher FeO content in slag would improve the distribution ratios of V and Cr between slag and hot metal. The distribution ratio of Cr or V increased with the increase of Cr2O3 or V2O3 content, respectively. To optimize the oxidation of V and Cr from hot metal, a high oxidizing slag and suitable content of Cr2O3 and V2O3 in the slag were recommended. The results provided reference for the further study on the extraction of V and Cr in VTi magnetite.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the convective heat transfer coefficients for recirculated suspensions of 30-micron glass beads in inert gas. Coefficients for the suspensions were not significantly higher than coefficients for the pure gas. Reynolds numbers of the suspensions were 20,000 to 35,000; solids loadings ranged from 0.0 to 0.7 pound per pound of gas. Comparison of the results with published data showed the direction of heat flow to have no effect at the test conditions.

"INTRODUCTION Manufacturers and consumers of steel have come to realize during the past few years that cleanliness is of great importance in steels which must meet rigid specifications for various physical properties. Of equal importance is the consistent production of steel which is uniform in these properties. For maximum utility steels should be uniform not only from heat to heat, but also from ingot to ingot and within each ingot. In the manufacture of killed steels such as the higher carbon forging grades, uniformity as indicated by the usual chemical analysis in easy to obtain, provided that a normal top discard is taken, as is always the case in steels poured with hot—top practice. No such uniformity, however, holds true for the nonmetallic matter, which consists for the most part of the products of deoxidation of the steel.For a large tonnage of steels which go into articles manufactured by deep—drawing processes, killed steel has never been successfully applied because with the present deoxidation practice, low—carbon killed steel is almost invariably extremely dirty. To obtain the desired qualities for deep drawing, the steel is rimmed, — that is to say, deoxidized with manganese and perhaps a small amount of aluminum, — the resultant product being of high purity in the skin of the ingot, but very badly segregated at the center of the ingot, particularly in the upper—central section. This segregation necessitates a very heavy top discard, and one of the major segregates is carbon which renders the steel too hard to draw properly. If clean, low—carbon killed steel could be made successfully, much better ingot yields would be obtained than by the present rimming steel practice. Furthermore, banded structures and outside and inside seams, which are undoubtedly due in a large measure to blowholes in the ingot, are defects which are very difficult to control in rimmed steel. These defects would be minimized by clean killed steel."

The driving force behind most advances in technology is need. In the early 1980s, underground coal miners in the USA wanted to build longer conveyors to handle larger capacities but continue to use fabric reinforced belting with mechanical fasteners. Conveyors with intermediate drives were certainly the answer but achieving reliable designs required a significant learning curve. Basic design methodologies had to evolve including advanced simulation of starting and stopping along with complex control techniques and logic. Some components also evolved as specific performance requirements changed Today, in addition to underground mining, the technology has been used extensively in the tunneling industry where the need is for control of belt tensions to negotiate tight horizontal curves. Even though intermediate drives are not used extensively on the surface yet, the lessons learned will find their way to long overland surface conveyance where smaller components are more available and reliable, and often with less capital cost. This paper will document the evolution of intermediate drive technology over the last 30 years and will show examples of its current use.

Va.-How near the size of the sand can the coal to be treated be brought? Do you use an 8-mesh coal on that cleaner? J. J. RUTLEDGE, Baltimore, Md.-From the little I have seen of the apparatus in operation, I should say 8-mesh. In my experience in metalmine concentration work, trying to separate different minerals on one jig, sometimes I have succeeded and sometimes not. This apparatus has appealed to me; something of this kind should be useful with the silicates and carbonates of zinc. I think this apparatus has possibilities in metal mining. Recently in our coal field a screen has been introduced for cleaning coal; it is giving excellent service. When I asked the inventor why he did not take it to the metal mines, he said there was a good and sufficient reason, in a patent way. There may be reasons why it would not be applicable for metal mining; but the simplicity of it appeals to me and I cannot see why it could not be so used. T. FRASER (written discussion).-We feel that 8-mesh would be about -the minimum size of coal practicable to treat by the air-sand process. This would depend partly upon the friability of the coal. The more nearly the lower size limits of the coal- approaches the size of the sand, the more .time will be required in screening the sand out of the cleaned coal, which would mean a little more chance of breakage. In regard to the treatment of ores; this would necessitate the use of some heavier mediums than ordinary silica sand, or some other means of making the separation at a higher specific gravity than is required for coal. We are now working on a method of obtaining this effect for the preparation of anthracite coal without resorting to the use of heavier and more expensive material than common sand.

This paper addresses some of the financial risk hedging mechanisms available to a corporation contemplating entering the mining business at a significant level of investment. The approach which I have adopted is that of a case study relating to the risk hedging aspects of Brascan Limited's acquisition of 46% of Noranda Inc., formerly Noranda Mines Limited, followed by some remarks on options open to mining companies for reducing financial risks. To appreciate the rationale for Brascan committing over (Can.) $800 million to the natural resource sector, some knowledge of Brascan's parent company, Edper Investments Ltd., is required at the outset. Edper Investments, prior to acquiring a 48% interest in Brascan, controlled Trizec Corporation, one of the world's largest property companies. Edper also was involved in the financial services sector through Continental Bank of Canada and Hees International Corporation. For some considerable time prior to Edper's investment in Brascan, Edper felt a need to provide a better balance to its portfolio of property and financial services. Brascan was rich in cash, relatively unleveraged, and with important existing holdings in natural resources and consumer products. The acquisition of a controlling interest in Brascan provided an opportunity to balance Edper's portfolio of property and financial services with world class acquisitions in natural resources, supplemented by consumer products and financial services. The end result of Brascan's activities over the last few years is illustrated by the following analysis of the book value of Brascan's assets at the end of December 1983. The large emphasis on natural resources came about from the fact that for Canadians operating mainly in Canada, natural resources were attractive. In addition, the quality of Canada's reserves looked good to us. The polymetallic nature of many of Canada's orebodies offered a hedge against risk relating to any one metal. Put another way, the by-product metal credits offered a net operating cost advantage with respect to many of the metals mined. Our energy costs also appeared to provide Canada's natural resource industries with an advantage. We considered Canadian mining expertise as amongst the world's finest, as were the exploration equipment and technology developed in Canada. In addition, Canada offered a stable political climate and one we knew. Further, we felt the Canadian Government's future role in the industry would, on balance, be benign, partly because the Canadian content of the mining industry was very high in contrast to the petroleum industry. Granted, we could find cheaper sources of copper; however, to do so would involve venturing into regions where country risks were higher.
