A mathematical model for spontaneous combustion of coal with moisture included is presented in this paper. The one-dimensional unsteady state model consists of conservation equations for oxygen, water vapour and inherent moisture of coal and energy for both gaseous and solid phases. A first order Arrhenius reaction rate for oxidation under both pore diffusion and chemically controlled reaction regime is considered. The rate of evaporation or condensation is also considered as a function of temperature of coal, water content of coal and gas streams. The equation of the model is solved numerically by the finite difference technique. Influences of different parameters on the process of spontaneous combustion can be examined by using this model. Also the model can be used to simulate full-scale storage conditions.

The partial molar heat of solution of rhodiunz in liquid lin and Rh-Sn alloys has been measured as a function of rhodium concentration at 700" , 725" , 750" , and 775°K. The values at infinite dilution are very exo thermic, ranging from -29,950 to -28,260 cal per g-atom Rh at 700" and 775"K, respectively. At the solubility limit the heat of solution becomes sharply nzore exothermic and has permitted the liquidus boundary to be accurately established at each temperature. From the measurements in the two-phase region of liquid Plus RhSn, the heat of formation of RhSn,has been determined. A large increase in the heat of formation between 725" and 750°K suggests the possibility of a phase transformation in this compound. V ERY few measurements have been made of the heats of solution of transition metals in liquid tin; yet those values that are available are of great interest because of their very large exothermic nature. For example, the heat of solution at infinite dilution of palladium in tin has been measured as about -26,000 cal per g-atom (625" to 800°~),' while the heat of solution at infinite dilution of platinum is even more exothermic at -28,591 cal per g-atom (914°K).' These values are of the same order of magnitude as the heat of formation of many intermetallic compounds and as such clearly indicate that very strong bonding must exist between the solute and tin atoms in the liquid solutions. Rhodium might be expected to display similar solution characteristics in tin in view of its close electronic resemblance to palladium and platinum. Since no thermodynamic data are available for Rh-Sn alloys, rhodium was chosen as an appropriate solute for further investigation of transition-metal systems with highly exothermic heats of solution at infinite dilution. EXPERIMENTAL The heat of solution of rhodium in dilute Rh-Sn liquid solutions was measured as a functlon of rhodium concentration at 700°, 725", 750°, and 775°K. The liquid-metal solution calorimeter used in this work has been fully described elsewhere. At the start of each series of measurements, the solvent bath consisted of about 0.5 g-atoms of 99.9+ pct pure tin. To this was made a number of small rhodium additions, about 0.0005 g-atoms each, and the heat of solution was measured for each. Rhodium of 99.9+ pct purity in powder form was used in order to promote rapid dissolution in the liquid tin. The powder specimens were contained in tin foil stated to be purified (lead-free). This foil was found to have no measurable heat of solution in pure tin so the effect of any impurities could be neglected. The energy equivalent of the calorimeter was experi- mentally determined by dropping tungsten and/or tin specimens at intervals during each series of rhodium drops. The tungsten and tin used were 99.95 and 99.999+ pct pure, respectively. The only heat effect due to a tungsten drop, or a tin drop at low rhodium concentrations in the bath, is the sensible heat of the specimen. The heat content of these materials is well-established and is presented in the compilation of Hultgren et al. 4 As the rhodium concentration in the tin bath increases a small heat effect arises from the reaction: Sn (liquid, T) — & (soln, T) where T is the temperature of the tin bath. Where necessary, this heat of solution of tin was determined by Gibbs-Duhem integration, and corrections were made to the heat effect of the tin calibration specimens and the tin foil containing the rhodium specimens. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The calculated values of the heat of solution of rhodium in dilute Rh-Sn alloys as a function of composition are shown graphically in Fig. 1. The values have been corrected for the sensible heat of the specimens, initially at 273"K, and apply to the reaction:

INVESTIGATORS in the field of temperature measurement have long sought a thermoelectric couple fulfilling the following requirements: 1. It should be useful up to and including high industrial tempera-tures; i. e., 1000° to 1800° C. 2. Its thermoelectric variation with temperature should be linear and be maintained after heating to high temperatures for long periods of time. 3. It should be reproducible; i. e., different couples of the same elements should have similar calibration curves. 4. Its thermoelectric power should be large so as to allow the industrial use of rugged recording instruments. 5. Chemical reactions with, and physical changes within the elements of the couple should not alter its calibration. No thermocouple proposed to date exhibits simultaneously all of these characteristics, whereas the couple about to be described fulfills all requirements to a satisfactory degree.

"Using a parameter representing the degree of hydration of particles in a liquid called hydration index I, which we derived based on Einstein’s viscosity equation, we evaluated the degree of hydration of fine montmorillonite particles in different aqueous solutions by measuring the viscosities of the montmorillonite dispersions and plotting relative viscosity against volume fraction of dry montmorillonite particles in the dispersions. We investigated the effects on the hydration of montmorillonite in aqueous solutions of (1) the type and (2) the concentration of electrolytes in the solutions and (3) pH. For the same concentration of electrolytes, the hydration index I of montmorillonite was found to increase in the order of Na+ > K+ for monovalent cations and Mg2+ > Ca2+ for divalent cations, and to decrease with increasing valence of cations in the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Al3+. For both Na+ and Ca2+, the hydration index I first increased with increasing concentration of electrolytes and then decreased after a certain concentration. The hydration index I increased with increasing pH. IntroductionClay minerals have the distinctive ability to adsorb water molecules and hydrated cations in aqueous solutions, resulting in hydration on their outer surfaces and in their interlayer spaces. Many investigators (Jurinak, 1963; Anderson and Tice, 1971; Costanzo et al., 1982; Israelachvili, 1992) had found evidence of ice-like structures of water on clay minerals.This phenomenon of hydration plays an important role in the dispersion and sedimentation of clay minerals in aqueous solutions. To understand clay hydration, numerous experimental and simulation studies have been carried out since 1933, including the recent ones of Hawkins and Egelstaff (1980), Skipper et al. (1995), Karaborni et al. (1996), Salles et al. (2013) and Morrow et al. (2013). Among the factors that can influence a clay mineral’s hydration characteristics are chemical composition, type and degree of isomorphous replacement in its structure, and number and nature of associated exchangeable cations."

Seventeen samples were carbonized by the BM -AGA pilot - plant test method and in industrial ovens . Chemical and physical properties of the samples were determined , and the physical properties of the cokes prepared by the two methods were compared . Since the capacity of the plants from which these samples were obtained is about 30 percent of the 1959 total for the United States , the data given in this report are indicative of the chemical and physical properties of blends used to produce industrial cokes and the acceptable chemical and physical properties of the resultant coke .

The Nitrogen Dioxide Cloud: After one year of testing it can be stated that we do know and understand a great deal about why the nitrogen dioxide formation is exacerbated in cast blasting. Picture 1 is an example of how concentrated the NOx can be from a cast blast. It has long been felt that 300 or more milliseconds of timing needs to be put between each row of detonations to allow the rock a maximum time of flight so the cast percentage is high. Our experiments have found that higher cast percentages can make with timing between 150 to 200 milliseconds between rows. Picture 2 show a definite improvement in nitrogen dioxide concentration and most of that was the result of shooting a previously shot end of the cast pattern that had not been dug, thus no confinement of the powder columns.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to describe the sealing off of a mine fire and subsequent use of carbon dioxide gas to extinguish it.A fire of electrical origin occurred in the Valier mine of the Valier Coal Co., Valier, Franklin County, I11., on March 29, 1949, at about 1:35 p.m. It was discovered about 3:35 p.m. in 5 south west intake airway inby 1 and 2 west panels. The No. 5 southwest airway had caved, and the fire was in the top coal beneath a large fall of rock. All men, except officials, were ordered from the mine. The mine officials decided to seal the fire, and four temporary seals were erected, which isolated approximately 200 feet of 5 south west entry. The seals were completed on March 30 at 2:45 a.m., but on March 31, at 3;40 a.m,, two of them were blown out by an explosion of gas that was produced by the fire. The two seals were rebuilt, the work being completed on March 31 at 12:00 noon, but they were blown out by another gas explosion at 12:10 a.m. on April 1. It was then decided to extinguish the fire with water if possible.To accomplish this, concrete-block dams were constructed. On April 1, about 4:25 a.m., when the dams were about half completed, water was introduced into the fire area through a 2-inch pipe.On April 4, J. G, Crawford, general manager of the Valier Coal Co., notified James Westfield, chief of the Vincennes (Ind.) Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines, by telephone of the fire in Valier mine and requested assistance to combat it. Westfield, accompanied by F. J. Smith and H. C. Brumbaugh, Federal coal-mine inspectors, went underground and inspected the seals and dams. Later, during a conference with company officials, it was decided that the concrete-block dams were not strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic pressure that would be produced by flooding the fire area. It was then decided to use carbon dioxide gas to extinguish the fire. Four seals were completed, and 5 tons of carbon dioxide gas was introduced into the fire area, which extinguished the fire."

"Working in urban environments presents unique logistical challenges beyond those typically associated with traditional geotechnical analysis and design. These challenges often include working on sites with limited access and laydown area, vibration concerns for adjacent structures and the need to work from variable elevations or within excavations. This paper describes the use of the modular Ductile Iron Pile system, a low-vibration driven micropile, on two urban projects on the Johnson & Wales University campus in Providence, Rhode Island. The paper describes the successful implementation of Ductile Iron Piles installed to develop capacity in end-bearing on one site and friction on the second site. Design, installation and quality control operations are all presented as well as the results of full-scale load testing performed on non-production test piles. This paper is of importance to the industry because it describes a versatile option for project teams as an alternative to traditional micropiles, helical piles or other deep foundation systems for urban sites.INTRODUCTIONWorking in urban environments presents unique logistical challenges beyond those typically associated with traditional geotechnical analysis and design. A novel flash ironmaking process that directly reduces iron oxide concentrate particles by gas is under development. The goal of this work was to study the possibility of reoxidation of iron particles in various gas mixtures. As the product iron cools down in the lower part of the flash reactor, conditions may become favorable for reoxidation because of equilibrium and high reactivity of iron particles. The effects of temperature (823 – 973 K) and H2O partial pressure (40 – 100 pct., Ptotal = 86.1 kPa) on the reoxidation rate were examined. The pressure dependence was first order with respect to water vapor, and the activation energy was 146 kJ/mol. A complete rate equation that adequately represents the experimental data was developed. For oxidation in O2-N2 mixtures, the effects of temperature (673 – 873 K) and O2 partial pressure (5 – 21 pct., Ptotal = 86.1 kPa) were determined. Reoxidation in pure CO2 was also investigated at 873 – 1073 K for comparison.

The ability to manipulate the structure of liquid chemicals in an explosive is important in mining applications, where precision blasting is crucial for the safe, reliable, economical and eco-friendly extraction of ores. Static mixers allow explosives, emulsion-based in particular, to be custom-made as they offer precise and reproducible mixing without the need for moving mechanical parts. In this paper, we perform numerical simulations on the laminar mixing of two nitrate-based fluids in a Kenics static mixer unit for various mixer parameters. Two numerical methods were investigated in the study of the mixing pattern: solving the mass transfer equation and using particle tracking. The former introduces artificial numerical diffusion which can lead to spurious smearing of the component boundaries, a problem that can be avoided with the latter technique. We have also demonstrated that the particle tracing method is capable of qualitatively predicting the blending patterns under the conditions studied.

"A practical model based on the Hill analysis has been developed to calculate the Lankford value of interstitial free (IF) steels and its distribution in different rolling directions, by considering only a few selected texture components. The Texture Intensity Ratio (TIR), i.e. (111 ) /(100), was used in the model to describe texture. By using the new TIR parameter, the texture-based prediction models can be used more easily to predict the Lankford value in a rather straightforward way.IntroductionThe deep drawing capacity of sheet steels is generally indicated by the Lankford value, which is mainly determined by the texture in steels1. Traditionally, various models derived from the Taylor model are employed to calculate the Lankford value from the texture2-4. In such models, the plastic deformation of steel is assumed to be the result of the slip of dislocations in certain slip systems, i.e., by either pencil glide or restraint glide. The slip direction is the <111> direction. In the case of pencil glide, the slip is thought to be possible in all crystal planes with the <111> crystal direction. Assuming the material is elongated in the X1-direction by d n and compressed in the X2 and x3-direction by qd n and (l-q)d n, respectively, corresponding to a deformation tensor"

Discussion C. G. Hinds (Member): The climatic chamber at Kloof Gold Mine was built to the design referred to in the paper presented by Professor Wyndham and Dr Strydom. As no suitable underground facilities existed for the acclimatization of labourers at the rate required, mining operations would have been severely restricted had there not been a climatic room timeously built on surface. The climatic room can accommodate 120 labourers per 4-!-hour shift. The standards laid down by the Human Sciences Laboratory were and still are being adhered to as strictly as possible. Through a shortage of European personnel the recommended degree of white supervision could not be adhered to and the use of Bantu assistants with a minimum education of Standard 8 was introduced. This is considered to have met with sufficient success to warrant acceptance as policy. The climatic room was brought into operation on the 1st September, 1967, i.e. two months after stoping at Kloof was commenced. The figures quoted herein therefore pertain to the period between that date and the 31st March, 1969, when the main shaft and the main surface fans were commissioned. The areas worked were sited between 5016 ft and 6 365 ft below surface. Virgin rock temperatures ranged between 92°F and 99°F. Stopes are cleaned by hand lashing. During the 20 months of stoping prior to the commissioning of the main shaft, mining operations at Kloof were effected through the Harvie Watt shaft of the Libanon Gold Mining Company Limited. In this period 10 452 Bantu labourers were acclimatized in the following categories: Experienced workers 7 326 New to the industry 2 086 Re-acclimatized 1 040 It will be noted that during the period, labourers &apos;new to the industry&apos; averaged 22 per cent of the intake. This percentage fluctuated from time to time and reached 42 per cent. (The present percentage is 60.) The greatest number acclimatized during anyone month occurred in February, 1969 when 1234 Bantu were treated. The greatest number of Bantu acclimatized during any 8-day period was 411. As many as four X 41/2 hour shifts were run in 24 hours. The number of men found to be heat intolerant over the period of 20 months was 33 out of a total 9 412 Bantu. The following tabulation illustrates the history of the build-up of manpower and the climatic conditions under which they worked: The average dip of the reef is 35°. The number of heat stroke and heat exhaustion cases during the period of 20 months under most difficult ventilation conditions was Nil.

The quality of iron ore pellets, represented in terms of parameters such as cold compressive strength (CCS) and Tumble Index (TI), has a strongly influence on the productivity and energy of reduction furnaces like the blast furnace and on the quality of hot metal or liquid iron. The main objective of pelletization operations is to produce iron ore pellets of desirable specifications and ensure high levels of plant productivity and energy efficiency. Advanced process control of an industrial iron ore pellet induration process using a soft sensor for pellet quality and fuzzy-logic based control algorithm is described in this paper. The pellet quality soft sensor consists of a rigorous mathematical model of the induration process and a statistical model for the pellet quality parameters. The mathematical model is based on the fundamental principles of heat and mass transfer between gases and pellets, kinetics of drying and condensation of moisture, combustion of coke, calcination of limestone, and melting and solidification of pellets. The predictions of wind-box temperature profiles are in close agreement with the measured profiles. The time-temperature profiles of the pellets during induration, along with raw material characteristics and induration process operating conditions, are used as inputs to the quality model to predict cold compressive strength and the Tumble Index. The predictions of the quality soft sensor along with the rules based on fuzzy-logic derived from simulation results and operator experience are then utilized to control the induration process to achieve precise control of the quality parameters and to optimize the induration process in terms of fuel efficiency and productivity. The mathematical model is also utilized as a soft sensor for temperature, moisture and composition profiles of pellets and gases. Results of implementation of this model-based control strategy on an industrial scale induration process will be presented. Since the spread of the European war virtually cut off imports from Denmark, Belgium, and France, the Bureau of Mines has had numerous inquiries as to domestic sources of grinding pebbles and silex or other types of ball mill liners. USES Flint pebbles and tube-rill liners are used by grinders of certain ceramic materials to prevent contamination of the finished product by iron abraded from steal baler and liners. The feldspar industry is one of the largest users of flint grinding mediums; they are employed also by curtain grinders of talc and soapstone, ground sand and sandstone, quartz, and chalk. Some paint materials, such as lithopone, have been ground in pebble Flint pebbles have been used more or less in the past, especially by cement manufacturers, and, for fine grinding of gold, copper, or other ores in which iron contamination is not especially deleterious.

This Mexican amalgamation-process, invented in 1557, at Pachuca, by Bartolome de Medina, has been widely discussed in America and Europe, but thus far there is no universal agreement as to all the chemical reactions involved. Having been, after many trials, the first to succeed in effecting the amalgamation of silver-ores by the same mechanical means, but doing without one of the chemical substances which had been considered indispensable in the practice of 300 Sears, I am led to offer these notes as a contribution to the discovery of an exact theory concerning the patio process. My treatment for silver- and gold-ores being protected by letters-patent in this country, the United States, France, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, I may speak freely concerning its materials and manipulation. I. Patio-Amalgamation. The ore extracted from the mine is sorted by pepenadores, who break the large pieces with hammers, rejecting those which contain no ore, set aside the very rich to be smelted, and deliver the rest to be crushed and pulverized for direct amalgamation in the patio. The broken lumps, of about fist-size, are first ground in Chilean mills, and then reduced, in arrastras or tahonas, to fine slime. After the lama or slime has acquired a suitable consistency by the evaporation, through the sun&apos;s heat, of a part of the water which it contained, it is spread upon the patio or amalgamating-floor, where it is mixed with 5 or 6 per cent. of common salt. Mill scale is an oxide waste product of the steel mills, which contains around 70% iron and other allied impurities. In the present context, a dynamic prototype counter current reactor (CCR) has been used for experimentation and simulation of particle bed by using discrete element method (DEM). Mill scale was pulverized to ASTM mesh range 140 (106 μm)/ + 270 (53 μm), and then it was oxidized in CCR to make single oxide Fe2O3 phase by maintaining required thermodynamic conditions such as pure oxygen at 1100 °C. Then this oxidized powder was subjected to reduction reaction in CCR having gas mixture ( H2:N2) ratio of 1:4 at 875 ± 5 °C for filling degree (fd) and reactor revolution (ω) ranging from 5.38 to 16.14% and 2 to 5 rpm, respectively. A creeping fluid flow condition (Re ˂ 1) and natural heat convection (Gr/Re2 ˃˃ 1) has been maintained while undergoing solid–gas reaction. Besides particle bed behavior has been quantified by Froude number (Fr) for the optimum operating window. The simulation was validated by the experimental results of reactor reaction product by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Prevailing heat transfer mechanism and reduction reaction mechanism has been established for solid–gas counter current conditions.

"Prospecting and Exploration. Since the Lake Superior ores occur in pockets or distinct bodies and vary much as to character and location, the actual mining of the ores is preceded by much work of an exploratory character. This work includes prospecting and exploration.Prospecting is the term generally applied to the quest for surface indications of ore, or the conditions which would warrant the expectation of finding ore in the vicinity. It includes such &apos;operations as geological examination, dip needle work, shallow test-pitting, and trenching. The ore bodies of the Mesabi Range are non-magnetic, and dip needle prospecting is therefore valueless. On the Cuyuna range, however, magnetic attraction as evidenced by the dip needle has been extensively employed as a guide to the location of ore deposits; in other localities it has found limited application.Drill Exploration. After the presence of an ore deposit is known or suspected, resort is generally had to exploration by means of diamond or churn drills. On the old ranges geological conditions generally make this manner of ascertaining the exact limits of an ore deposit impracticable; so, if two or three adjacent drill holes develop considerable depths of ore, the sinking of a shaft for underground exploration, development and mining is generally considered warranted. On the Mesabi Range, however, the flat-lying and comparatively shallow characteristics of the ore formation warrant much more extensive drill explorations. On this range, then, an ore body &apos;is almost invariably followed· out with the drills, and its limits are determined to the point where the complete plan of development can be worked out in advance of actual mining operations"

Rare earth magnets play an increasingly important role in high end technology, and the manufacture of rare earth magnets, such as the NdFeB type, consume a large amount of the rare earths produced. Recycling of this material could provide an important domestic source for these materials. A selective sulfation roast has been proposed; the central principle of which is to take advantage of the differing stabilities of the rare earth sulfates as compared to those of iron under an air/SO2 atmosphere. Experiments show iron is found to be stable as an oxide, however, neodymium is found to form an oxy-sulfate phase.
