Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31, 1970, a notice of proposed rulemaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working places of underground coal mines. In light of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed rulemaking, the proposed standards were withdrawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974, and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting-standards &k place on October 1, 1976, which means that the underground coal mining, industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978.

The definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. we may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina, and probably soda and potash, are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. A STUDY of subsidence and ground movement in the copper and iron mines of the upper peninsula of Michigan has been made by W. R. Crane of the United States Bureau of Mines and published as Bulletin 295 of 66 pages and 49 illustrations. As a result of subsidence, the country adjacent to the mines and over- lying the mine workings in this district is often broken to such an extent as to affect its value; mine shafts and development openings are occasionally so damaged as to be rendered useless, and water can enter the workings through fractures and cave-ins. The problem is more serious in the iron-mining districts, where villages and towns not owned by the operating companies have grown up around mining operations.

Waste-rock piles from metal mining operations are comprised of large surface deposits of unsaturated, coarse-grained soil and rock. The unsaturated condition and heterogeneous, coarsegrained nature of these deposits make them difficult to monitor or characterize. Key parameters that must be evaluated include; volume-mass relationships (e.g. water content, air content, porosity, density, degree of saturation, grain-size), transport properties (e.g. air-permeability, gas diffusion, hydraulic conductivity), geochemistry (e.g. solids, gas, and fluid phases) and soilatmospheric fluxes (water and gas). This paper describes some of the techniques that have been developed to characterize waste rock piles for uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan. For each technique, the method of measurement is described, and preliminary field data are presented and discussed.

Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solution of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solutions is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.

Haul truck fatal accidents and injuries continue to be a significant concern for the mining industry. However, the availability of high-quality training materials continues to be limited. Near-miss incident accounts, if packaged well, could help fill this gap, because for every fatality, there are hundreds of reportable accidents and thousands of undocumented near misses. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) collected detailed accounts of 21 near-miss incidents in virtual interviews with mineworkers at surface mining operations across the country. From these interviews, researchers created four simulation videos. The videos bring these events to life through first-person retelling and various visual perspectives of actual events. Each video exemplifies a critical safety message and a common haul truck hazard. This paper describes the process of taking narratives and turning them into impactful visual stories. NIOSH plans to co-release these simulation videos with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to the mining industry to raise awareness and ultimately help reduce haul truck-related accidents and fatalities in mining.

A series of small scale tests have been performed to establish the effect of powder factor and initiation timing on the grindability of rocks. The blasts were performed in high quality granite blocks, which were cut from stone prepared by dimensional stone quarry operations. Three different types of granite were tested. The charge configurations included detonating cord placed in five holes with water as a coupling medium or concentrated charges of equal mass, placed in the same number of holes, fully stemmed or air decked. The powder factor was varied from 0.4 to 1.2 kg/m3. Typically all charges were detonated simultaneously; however, in some experiments, detonation waves collided in the middle of each borehole and in others a small delay was used between charges. All fragments were collected and screened, and drop weight impact tests were performed on selected size fractions, using different impact energy, to calculate the resistance of the rock to impact breakage. The work index of some of the blasted samples was measured using a standard Bond mill arrangement. The experiments generally showed increased softening of the rock with powder factor, which appeared to be the dominant factor. Charge configuration as well as in-hole collisions of detonation waves affected the initial fragmentation but had little effect on the impact breakage of the samples.

Large-opening underground stone mines pose significant ground control challenges, including the risk of massive pillar collapses. These collapses can result in dangerous air blasts characterized by tremendous force and high velocity. Estimating the velocity of these air blasts proves challenging due to the absence of accurate air velocity instruments near the mine portals. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages closed-circuit television camera footage from the mine. Specifically, it employs the optical flow algorithm implemented in Python to estimate the velocity of the air blasts, providing a valuable tool for assessing and mitigating risks in such mining environments.

AVAILABLE data for the first nine months of the Year indicate that accident occurrence in metal mining was well on its way to an all-time low for 1939. However, the relatively rapid pickup in mining production in the fall will be likely to boost both accident occurrence and also accident rates. Results of the National Safety Competition for 1938, the fourteenth of its kind conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, were published in August, 1939. W. W. Adams, statistician of the bureau, states that "with 345 mines and quarries competing, more than in any previous year except 1931, the contest revealed low accident rates at many of the enrolled plants and, which is even more remarkable, it revealed 113 mines and quarries at which no lost- time accidents occurred during the con- test year." The National Safety Competition provides a means whereby mines and quarries may engage in active competition to stimulate their safety programs. Companies in the contest can compare their records with those of similar plants operating elsewhere and thereby determine to what extent their safety programs are successful. The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association gave over 150 awards for safety performance in the mineral industries in 1939 and a remarkable phase of these awards was the considerable number given to individual miners who had worked fifty or more years without sustaining a lost-time accident.

A large amount of stainless steel dust rich in Fe, Cr, and Ni has been being generated in China. Smelting treatment is accepted as a practical method for the recovery/reutilization of these second resources, during which Fe, Cr, and Ni is reduced into one metal phase and then separated from the residue slag. Based on the typical compositions of stainless steel dust, the residual slag can be termed as CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 system. In this paper, the activity coefficients of Cr in Fe-Cr-Ni-C (-Si/Al) melt and the properties of CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3- 1%CrO system thermodynamically approached. Then, in laboratory experiments, the recovery ratios of Cr and its distribution behaviors between Fe-Cr-Ni-C melt and CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 slag system were examined.

Mining operations in close proximity to dwellings and sensitive structures present challenges in terms of mitigating the undesirable effects of blasting while maintaining productivity and ensuring the safety of surrounding communities. This paper explores the application of advanced blasting techniques, including the use of electronic detonators and the splitting of total explosive charges, to address these challenges. A series of experimental blasts were conducted, comparing blasts conducted with and without splitting of holes, to assess the impact on ground vibrations. The results demonstrated significant reductions in vibration magnitudes when implementing controlled blasting practices with splitting techniques. The findings highlight the importance of total explosive charge in determining ground vibration magnitudes within the danger zone of mine workings. The use of electronic detonators provided precise control over blast sequencing, contributing to safer and more efficient mining practices. These advanced blasting methods offer a practical and innovative solution for conducting safe mining operations near dwellings and sensitive structures, ensuring compliance with safety regulations while sustaining productivity.

The paper presents the development of a thermodynamic based network analysis model. It uses transient heat flow algorithm for computing the heat flow from strata and predicts the environmental condition in different branches of the network. Along with the environmental condition, the mass flow distribution in network is computed by using nodal pressure method based on linear theory approach. The algorithm has been coded using object oriented programming approach and it has been validated in actual field condition. The correlation is satisfactory.

A thermogravimetric study has been conducted to follow the decomposition and volatilization of arsenic from enargite concentrate in nitrogen and slightly oxidizing atmospheres. Temperature has a large effect on the rate of volatilization of arsenic. Fractional volatilization of arsenic as high as 98% were obtained in less than 60 min at 650°C in nitrogen atmosphere, while in slightly oxidizing atmosphere the same volatilization could be achieved in 30 min. It was found that arsenic volatilizes as sulfide in nitrogen atmosphere and as 4xture of sulfide and oxide in atmospheres containing 1% oxygen. By using the pore blocking and the first order kinetic models, apparent activation energies of 213 and 200 kJ/mol for the temperature range of 780 - 900 K and 205 and 184 kJ/mol for the temperature range of 900 - 985 K were determined for enargite and copper concentrate, respectively.

Continuous measurement based on radiation pyrometry has often met with difficulties whose causes have been obscure. In this paper the experience gained with on-line pyrometry in utility and Kraft recovery boilers in the range 800-l400oC will be reported. It is shown that the inherent problems are best resolved by using a spectral pyrometer not sensitive to gas radiation. The radiation from the suspended particles thus provides the signal. It is further shown that the principle cause of difficulties is signal calibration drift caused by heat fluxes originating from surrounding surfaces and reflected by the particles to the pyrometer. Several examples are given how such problems may be resolved using process information and/or additional measurements, fed to and processed by and on-line microcomputer.

"Predictive numerical methods are essential tools for reduced development cost and improved high performance designs of modern aircrafts. Their use leads to savings in terms of design cycle time and experimental trials. Composite materials subjected to impact loadings demonstrate various damage modes such as matrix cracking, fiber breakage, delamination and, ultimately, fabric fracture. Composite laminates are extensively used in the aerospace industry, and their damage modeling is complex due to their inhomogeneity and anisotropic behavior. Damage evolution affects both in-service properties and performance of these composites. In this work, the drop-weight impact test has been simulated. Using a material model that accounts for both delamination and intralaminar damage, laminates response is analysed using numerical simulations based on 3-D finite-element models of the commercial code Abaqus/Explicit. Experimental and simulation results are compared, in terms of energy absorption and contact force. The obtained numerical results show good agreement with experimental data.INTRODUCTIONAs primary aircraft structures are increasingly being made from advanced fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites and are in general exposed to a variety of impact scenarios (bird, hail, debris etc.), an understanding of the impact event and the performance of composite materials during impact is important in the development of new structures. This work is focussed on low velocity impacts that typically occur when foreign objects hit the aircraft during maintenance or other on-the-ground operations. These impacts can cause non visible damage that affect the structural integrity of the composite components. While for metallic structures, damaging impact events typically leave noticeable dents due to plastic deformation, in contrast, for high strength carbon fiber reinforced composites, they can deform elastically to strain levels exceeding 1% and the internal damage can often occur without the formation of a visible dent. The identification and effect of impact damage on the performance of the structure is thus of great concern to the aircraft industry as the durability and damage tolerance of these composite structures are strongly influenced by the size of detectable internal damage."

The LaModel program (Heasley, 1998) is a displacement discontinuity, boundary element model (BEM) for analyzing stresses and displacements in single and multiple-seam coal mines. After the Crandall Canyon mine collapse, the need for better design guidelines for LaModel was observed and a new calibration method for deep cover pillar retreat was developed (Heasley et al., 2010). However, the scope of this initial calibration was limited to single-seam mines deeper than 750 ft. This limited application of the initial calibration method lead directly to the research presented in this paper, which attempts to define appropriate LaModel calibration guidelines for pillar design where shallow cover and/ or multiple-seam mining scenarios are encountered. As part of this research, a database of shallow cover case histories has been developed, and this database is used to help validate the shallow cover calibration method. By adding the shallow cover database to the previous deep cover database, the LaModel calibration method has now been extended to the complete range of mining depths, as well as to multiple-seam cases. With this shallow cover calibration, the utility of the LaModel program continues to increase.

The concept of Big Data refers to data sets that are so large, variable and/or complex that traditional data processing applications struggle to integrate the data for effective investigation, analysis and value generation. With advances in sensor technology and smarter equipment, the mining industry is experiencing Big Data, and in a different way to how the intelligence and marketing communities experience Big Data. Future mining will bring larger, more complicated and diverse data sets increasing the strain on traditional data integration and investigation techniques. Block caving is an important mining method for the extraction of massive, low-grade ore deposits due to its low operating cost and high production potential, given the right orebody geometry and ground conditions. This paper focuses on block caving due to its increasing popularity and importance in the future economic extraction of multiple commodities. The block cave mining system (BCMS) is a complex interrelation of factors, and due to the reliance on natural processes within the system, it is one of the least understood mining methods. Obtaining information on the factors within the BCMS generates large, complex data sets on various time scales. Each sensor network within the BCMS combines spatial and temporal information with tens to hundreds of recorded parameters. Data sets are quickly moving from multidimensional to n-dimensional. Optimisation of the BCMS is only possible through a holistic analysis approach, thus involving the integration of multiple, diverse, n-dimensional data sets (Big Data). This paper presents a current example BCMS Big Data situation involving 12 sources of information with differences in volume, data format and frequency of data generation. This suitability of virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) as a solution to BCMS Big Data interpretation difficulties is then discussed. These 12 data sets can be effectively integrated using VRSV for intuitive and accelerated investigation of the BCMS. Potential future Big Data within the BCMS is presented involving 20 sources of information resulting from our increased need for monitoring and advancements in technology. Current methods of defining queries may not be suitable within these future complex, multidimensional data sets, and the potential of artificial intelligence algorithms within this system is discussed. These advancements in technology and machine learning lead to the requirement of live data acquisition and analysis. Fluent information exchange between different work phases, software and systems used in infra construction is a key for successful execution of infra construction projects. Open and publicly available information formats with the determined data models aim to facilitate the interoperability between different software and systems developed by competitive vendors. While building and construction industry has developed and used IFC format for years, infrastructure sector has just recently started to target clear efforts on the development of open information formats for infra construction processes. In the paper, a new Inframodel3 extension just developed in Finland and based on the LandXML1.2 international standard is to be introduced. The aim of the Inframodel3 was set to meet the requirements of information transfer needed especially between BIM based design software, measurement systems and 3-D machine control systems used in road, railway and watercourse construction projects. Some test results are reported and evaluated in the paper. In the field of bridge engineering, the IFC format and IFC Bridge extension have been tested and evaluated in Finland. The results from the experiments show and verify as well the applicability of these open formats to the information exchange requirements in bridge engineering. The current limits for open information transfer of these formats are shown. The active co-operation with the International Building SMART Organization has led to the achieved status and position for both the Inframodel3 and IFC Bridge formats and hence the continuing international support provided by Building SMART.
