Uranium minerals are often associated with iron minerals, and during the hydrometallurgical processing of the uranium ores, iron plays several significant roles. The presence of Fe(III) in solution promotes the oxidative acid leaching for the recovery of uranium. The control of the distribution of impurities in milling and refining is also affected by dissolved iron. When rejected from the process streams, iron usually collects other impurities and contributes to the stabilization of the wastes for final disposal. These roles of iron, as they relate to current uranium processing operations, are discussed in detail, and some broad and historical perspectives are also presented.

Throughout recorded history, underground fires have plagued mining operations. Compared with other hazardous situations in underground mining, a fire can become a global problem by swiftly spreading deadly carbon monoxide and other products of combustion (POC's) throughout the whole mine, often without warning. Experience has shown that when fires are detected and located in their early stages, they are much easier to control and proper escape routes can be more intelligently selected. Recent advances in sensor and data communication technology have made reliable mine fire .detection system installations possible. Unlike building construction. in a mine, it is impractical to install detectors at every desired location. Abandoned workings and unsafe locations preclude sensor installations from both safety and economic standpoints. The net effect is that some fires are detected and located early while the location of others, even if detected early, remains unknown too long for effective evacuation and fire fighting.

The K.T. Dome Mine in Owen and Henry Counties, Ky., has been operated intermittently under several different owners since the early nineteen hundreds. No record of total production is available, but it is said that during 1943 and 1944, while being operated by the Twin Valley Mining Co., 30 cars of zinc concentrates and 10 cars of lead concentrates were shipped. The vein can be traced for about 10 miles along the strike from Lockport, Henry County, to Big Twin Creek in Owen County. It pinches and swells both vertically and horizontally and is reported to average 20 inches in width. In order to develop additional reserves on the property, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes on the south extension of the vein. Drilling disclosed that the vein dips to the west on the south side of the Kentucky River and is continuous along the strike and in depth. However, the extent of mineralization in the vein varies widely.

High-Mg-content concentrates are usually treated in Jinchuan flash smelting Furnace. Because the viscosities of high-Mg-content slag is very high, the operation of flash smelting becomes very difficult. To solve this problem, the viscosities of the semi-synthesized FeO-MgO-SiO2 slag of different compositions were measured. The results showed that when in the slag the weight percentage of MgO [w(MgO)] is 6-10%, the ratio of the weight percentage of iron to that of Si02, w(Fe)/w(Si02) is 1.1-1.4 and the temperatures are within 1473-1773K, the slag viscosities increased with the increase of W(MgO) and w(Fe)/w(SiO,). When w(Mgo)<6%, the smelting temperature should be controlled at I 300°C in order to to keep the smooth operation. When w(MgO)>10%, the temperature should be kept above I 633K. When the content of MgO is higher, a lower viscosity slag can be produced by decreasing the ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,). The appropriate ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,) for Jinchuan flash smelting furnace is about 1.2.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS (1994 Agreement), but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing (RAND) that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property (IP) derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to identlfy and evaluate alternative binder materials for use in stabilizing and consolidating highly fractured roof along longwall faces and gate roads. The desirable characteristics of a stabilization material were defined, and an extensive search was conducted to find materials satisfying these characteristics. Of 20 materials originally scrutinized, 9 were chosen for laboratory analyses. The laboratory tests evaluated bond strength and tensile strength under both dry and wet conditions. An optimum material was not found. The laboratory analyses indicated two possible candidate materials for longwall stabilization: high-aluminous cement and two-component epoxy; however, the tensile strength of the high-aluminous cement was mediocre, and the epoxy cement is toxic, flammable, and fairly expensive. The potential market demand for an effective and economical stabilization macerial is discussed in the appendix.

The paper presents a survey of the possibilities of the simulation techniques for improving the design and operation of gold processing plants. The procedure to construct kinetic models that are used in simulators is first reviewed, and examples are given for cyanide gold dissolution and gold adsorption on carbon. Then, an overview of the structures of the plant simulators is proposed, and the simulation equations formulated for a carbon-in-leach process. Finally, the potential of simulation methods is illustrated by four examples. The first one shows how it is possible to use a simulator to design a cascade of leaching tanks while optimizing an economic performance criterion. The second one illustrates the role of simulators for optimal tuning of the cyanide addition strategy in a leaching circuit. The third example focuses on the power of simulation to design carbon transfer strategies in a carbon-in-pulp process. Finally, the last example shows the role of on-line simulators for optimally supervising the automatic control of cyanide addition into leaching tanks.

In support of Bureau of Mines studies of thermal fragmentation of rock, the elastic moduli of four types of rock were measured at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 1,500° F (1,089° K). The sonic method was employed to determine the resonant frequencies of the rock specimens and from these frequencies, the elastic moduli were calculated. Data for Young&apos;s modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson&apos;s ratio are given as a function of temperature for Dresser basalt, Reserve taconite, Jasper quartzite, and Charcoal granite. Young&apos;s modulus and the shear modulus decreased with increasing temperature up to about 1,200° F and then became relatively insensitive to temperatures from 1,200° to 1,500° F.

Impeller speed and air flow rate are two influence parameters on coarse particles flotation and collision and attachment angles. So, in this research recovery of quartz particles at four diameter classes carried out and collision and attachment angles investigated. It is found that maximum flotation response was observed at Impeller speed of 1100 rpm and 15 L/h air flow rate. For either more quiescent (Impeller speed<1100 rpm) or more turbulent conditions, flotation recovery decreased steadily. Furthermore, amount of attachment probabilities is calculated using suitable equation. According to this study, with decreasing particle size, air flow rate and impeller speed, probability of attachment increased and with increasing contact angle, probability of attachment increased. For various air flow rates, impeller speed and particle size, collision angle has been calculated. Maximum collision angle obtained at with 15 L/h air flow rate, particle size of 256 µm and impeller speed of 700 rpm and minimum collision angle obtained at with 45 L/h air flow rate, particle size of 545µm and impeller speed of 1300 rpm. "Gold has been found in many parts of the Bridge River district of British Columbia; but it is from a relatively small area in the valley of Cadwallader creek that most production has come. The ore-bearing area measures 1/2 mile in width by 3 miles in length; and for convenience it is called the Cadwallader gold belt in this paper. In this belt are found the Bralorne and Pioneer mines and in addition several prospects under development.The gold of the Cadwallader gold belt occurs in quartz veins averaging about 3 feet in width and containing about ½ oz. of gold a ton. Except for a relatively small amount of silver, no other metals are produced from these veins. The ore-bearing veins occur in a variety of rocks. They occupy reverse faults and tension fractures belonging to a distinctive fracture system. Some of these structures are ore-bearing over lengths exceeding 5,000 feet and depths exceeding 3,700 feet. The production of the Bralorne mine (1932-1945) is 996,383 oz. gold and 190,709 oz. silver; that of the Pioneer mine (1930-1945) is 777,588 oz. gold and 135,698 oz. silver. These two mines have together distributed about $25,000,000 in dividends.The Bridge River district first attracted attention in 1863* when prospectors were attracted by its small but rich placer gold deposits. Most of the important lode deposits of the Cadwallader gold belt were discovered in 1897 (11). Many years of desultory development followed and it was not until 1928 and 1932 that the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, respectivdy, entered into profitable production."

Two of the open-pit, copper-molybdenum mining operations of Duval Corporation are located in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains approximately 30 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. In March 1959, mining from a moderate sized porphyry deposit known as the "Esperanza orebody" was begun at a rate of 10,000 tons of ore per day. Some five years later, a sizeable group of mineral claims west of Esperanza became available to Duval. Earlier exploration and development drilling in this area by others indicated an orebody of greater size but lower tenor than that of Esperanza. A drilling program conducted by Duval not only verified the results of the prior drilling but in addition, revealed a continuation of the mineralization to the south and east. Thus was developed the Sierrita orebody. Open pit design delineated 414 million tons of ore containing an average copper content of 0.35 percent and a molybdenum content of 0.036 percent. In April 1966, the office of Emergency Planning authorized General Services Administration to undertake a program under the Defense Production Act to en¬courage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national defense. Duval&apos;s Sierrita Project was brought to GSA&apos;s attention in May 1966 on November 28, 1967, an agreement providing for the development of the Sierrita Property was consummated with GSA. In March 1970, the first copper-molybdenum concentrates were produced in the 72,000 tons-per-day concentrator. Pre-production stripping exceeded the scheduled 105 million tons despite the comparatively short lead time available to equip the mine, build the mine plant facilities, and staff the technical, supervisory, and labor forces. Shortly before the first concentrates were produced, plans were being formulated for a program to increase processing capacity by approximately 15 percent, which entailed increasing overall mining capacity by approximately 50,000 tons per day. This program is scheduled for completion early in 1971.

Briefly, a permissible schedule of the Bureau of Mines establishes certain minimum standards for safety; it gives details of test methods adopted to determine whether these standards have been met, and a list of charges for such tests. Any manufacturer has the privilege of submitting his product for test in accordance with the conditions outlined in the schedules. His action is wholly voluntary, for the Federal Government has no jurisdiction as to what equipment shall be used in mines, this authority being left to the various States. When the product of a manufacturer has met the schedule requirements, he is permit¬ted to advertise this fact and to attach an approval plate with the bureau&apos;s seal to each machine he makes that is identical in every way with the equipment tested, inspected, and approved by the bureau. This work of approval has grown by the addition of new schedules until at present a great many mines are using one or more classes of permissible equipment, and there is still a demand for other approved apparatus in the ever-widening field of electrically operated machinery. The safety of electrical equipment of this type depends on four fundamentals, namely, (1) correct principles of design; (2) proper assembly of parts at the factory; (3) proper assembly and installation of equipment at the mine; (4) and proper operation and maintenance after installation. The first two factors are within the province of the manufacturer. The bureau either inspects and tests several models of one product, such as electric cap lamps, or one model, such as an electric motor. If this series of tests proves satisfactory, the manufacturer is given the privilege of making other appliances, and assembling them in the same way; the approval plate he attaches is his guaranty that the equipment is identical with the one tested and inspected by the bureau. A dynamic model is used to represent the single-stage closed grinding mill circuit at Mogalakwena North Concentrator. The circuit consists of a ball mill closed by a hydrocyclone. The circuit is modelled according to a semi-mechanistic non-linear dynamic model available in literature. An algebraic routine is used to fit model parameters to steady-state process data. Preliminary validation results against dynamic data indicate that the model is capable of capturing the main dynamic trends of the plant. Since classical system identification techniques proved insufficient to produce accurate models; the non-linear model can be used as a reliable source for model-predictive controller design. Present-day interest in the rare-earth elements and their compounds, for both metallurgical and ceramic uses, makes it highly desirable to accumulate basic thermodynamic data that can be applied to theoretical considerations of the processing of these substances. Such data still are seriously lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports the results of high-temperature heat content measurements of the sesquioxides of four rare-earth elements--europium, gadolinium, neodymium, and samarium--and of the closely related element, yttrium. Energy required for roasting and smelting of a nickeliferous laterite ore by the rotary kiln - electric furnace process is investigated. From this work it comes that thermal energy is about 65% of the total energy needed and the rest is electrical. Also, 61.3% of thermal energy input in the roasting step (of all combustibles fed into the rotary kilns) is used for pre - heating, 11.6% for pre - reduction and the rest (27.1%) corresponds to the energy of the remaining carbon in the rotary kiln products (i.e., calcine, dust and coatings). Carbon entering the system is used as follows: 57.9% for combustion, 37.1% for reduction and the rest (5.0%) remains unburnt. Exploitation of energy from gases of both furnaces, as well as the higher possible reduction degree, the optimum temperature of the calcine and also elimination of the excess air in the rotary kilns, improve significantly energy balance and economics of the process.

Although it is impossible to give definite final figures at this time on Nation-wide accident occurrence in 1933 , enough data are at hand to indicate that the progress in safety in the mining industry, which first became apparent in 1930 and was accentuated in 1931 and 1932 , was continued and much improved in 1933. This improvement was of considerable magnitude in mining both bituminous coal and anthracite but was not so great in other branches of the mining industry . While the volume of work done in all phases of mining increased in 1933 over that in 1932 , the exact amount of the increase is not yet known . Usually increased activity in mining is accompanied by even greater increase in the rate of occurrence of accidents to the workers , but happily it appears that this " rule " was not operating in 1933 --at least in the coal -mining industry .

In Canadian mines, ear muffs are now an essential part of safety equipment. Because of this, a research study was conducted to investigate their efficiency. The main characteristics of eleven commercially available ear muffs were investigated in the laboratory and analyzed by: (I) a psychophysical method; and (2) a physical method. These investigations showed the following effects: head size has a significant influence on the attenuation because of a different clamping force; the amount of hair trapped between the ear muff cushion and the head decreased ear muff attenuation; attenuation and comfort are not in a causal relationship; with the use of glasses and their adapters, attenuation decreases-the adapters are not effective sound barriers; there are no great differences in attenuation with neck movement; the efficiencies of various brands of ear muffs are not equal; ear muffs with a small cushion area start serving their purpose more quickly because the force per unit area is larger; a clamping force larger than 900 g wt, in most ear muffs, does not cause an increase in attenuation; attenuation characteristics (ANSI 224.22 - 1957) of ear muffs show some correlation with physical tests. Nine ear muffs out of the eleven were tested under uniform conditions in mines. Three ear muffs were found to be the best. All three ear muff s have bands passing behind the head. The ear muff with a support strap, which improves comfort and maintains a good fit during wear, showed the best attenuation. Causes of poor attenuation are numerous: bad mounting of ear muffs on helmets, improper fitting, interferency by hair and glasses, improper wearing by miners, unsatisfactory enforcement by supervisory personnel, incomplete training of miners, etc. Results of this research have indicated that none of the ear muff s tested in this study contain all of the characteristics desirable in an ideal unit. Because of unsatisfactory ear muff attenuation in working conditions (/5 dBA), it should be a mandatory requirement that workers wear both ear muff s and ear plugs if the noise level is higher than 105 dBA (various literature recommends t io dBA). The key to the solution lies in the following: the foreman must be capable of helping and controlling miners in their task of wearing ear muffs properly; the program must be introduced to miners; and constant contact must be maintained with manufacturers.

Gold in the Twin Creeks ore is primarily associated with arsenian pyrite. During pressure oxidation, the sulphides are solubilized, but part of the dissolved iron reprecipitates as jarosite and as an iron sulphate-arsenate-phosphate phase. The pressure oxidation products are subjected to cyanide leaching. The cyanide leach residues consist of quartz, gypsum, bassanite, anhydrite, small amounts of jarosite, an iron-sulphate-arsenate-phosphate phase, as well as trace amounts of orthoclase, rutile, pyrite, hematite and monazite; all these particles are dispersed in a fine grained matrix of illite-muscovite. The autoclave leach residues contain a small amount of carbonaceous matter. Many gold grains are detected on the surfaces of the carbon particles, and these gold particles are not leached during cyanidation. The gold particles are typically 0.1-0.2/Lm in size and commonly are embedded in the carbon surface or are coated with a K-AI-Si-S-O phase on the surface of the carbon. The gold grains are consistently associated with elevated CI contents (50-300 ppm Cl). The poor gold cyanide leach recoveries, which initially occurred in the Twin Creek developmental circuit under certain operating conditions, are attributed to the presence of chloride in the feed. This results in the formation of soluble gold chlorocomplexes in the autolcave and the subsequent sequestering of the gold on the surfaces of the carbon particles.

This concept paper is presented in the hope of raising the awareness of mankind on the necessity for its peaceful coexistence with nature. It is a food for thought. It takes compromise and sacrifice of people, who will have to learn to curb their greed and move toward a more organic form of prosperity. A nature-friendly sustainability is first step toward the protection of nature that is critical to the mutual survival of mankind and nature. People need the resources from the finite earth to survive and nature needs the prevention of human destruction in order to continue to regenerate and provide. The contemporary notion of sustainability is self-serving. It serves the interest of industry by camouflaging itself to look like nature?s protector. The ?sustainability? concept presented in this paper aims to extend the longevity of the utilization of the limited natural resources for many generations to come. It is an important, responsible first step in creating a healthy sustainability concept that, when implemented, extends the longevity of mankind by the most efficient use of the finite resources on this limited Planet Earth, all the while taking into consideration the increase in anthropogenic activities due to exponential human population growth. This new definition of ?sustainability? has completely different characteristics than its contemporary versions. Nature has its own destiny, rules and principles. Being a part of nature, human society depends on it for survival and must play by its rules and never the other way round as in its initial pretensions. Society should not try to humanize nature, but rather to respect the rule of the nature in a peaceful way of co-existence. When implemented, this new concept of sustainability aims to affect the designs of engineered structures and revolutionize the recovery methods and processing of natural resources, such as mineral resources in the most efficient manner. Finally, this paper intends to stimulate critical thinking and initiate serious discussions aiming at producing a general consensus for the best definition for human society to not only enrich, but to extend its existence.
