Manganese is a difficult metal to electrodeposit due to its high electronegativity and continues to possess unique process challenges. Manganese deposits of high quality are electrodeposited on 316 grade stainless steel from sulphate solutions in the presence of organic additives such as tetra ethyl ammonium bromide (TEABr), tetra propyl ammonium bromide (TPABr), and tetra butyl ammonium bromide (TBABr). The concentrations of these additives were examined over a relatively broad range to evaluate their effect on current efficiency, specific energy consumption and deposit morphology of the electrodeposited manganese metal. A maximum current efficiency of 68% was achieved in the presence of TEABr in the bath. X- ray diffraction studies revealed that (330) (411) planes were the most preferred planes of crystal growth during manganese electrowinning at a current density of 500 A/m2 resembling alpha-manganese irrespective of the nature of additive. Scanning electron micrographs showed smooth and uniform deposit morphologies when manganese was electrodeposited in the presence of TEABr.

Evaluation of Ellenburger reservoirs in West Texas has been an uncertain matker at best because of the lack of cores and suitable core-analysis method. Large amounts of oil arc produced from sections from which sample cuttings are obtained that contain litile porosity and no oil saturation. It has long been realized that the formation in some areas contained numerous fractures and solulion cavities that probably contained the major part of the oil present but the magnitude of the porous system conltaining oil has been unknown. Diamond coring cquipmene, used in the mining industry lor many years, has been developed for oil-field use to obtain high core recovery in fractured dolomite that is not possible with conventional coring equipment. A 36ft section of the core recovered from a fractured Ellenburger reseivoir waS analyzed by a unique but simple method to obtain the first defmite evaluation of one section of the producing formation. The cores and the method of analysis used are described and the results arc discussed in some detail. Discussion The first successful known analyses of cores recovered from the Ellenburger formation in the Permian Basin area were made on cores recovered with the use of diamond core heads. Conventionul coring methods previously used have had lour core recovery and standard methods of analysis have proved to be inadequate for evaluation of those cores that were recovered. Core Descriplion The Ellenburger formation to be dis cussed was cored using diamond core heads and oil-base drilling fluid. Of the total 103 ft cored to a depth of 8893 ft in the Ellenburger, 99 ft or 96 pct was recovered. The dolomite cores were described as gray to white, crystalline to coarscIy crystalline, with chert and calcite inclusions. Occasional shale partings ? to ¼ in. in width were noted. A small amount of green clay was found in some of the coarsely crystalline material. So intergranular porosity was found by inspection in any of the cores. The core urns highly fractured over most of its length with not more than two continuous feet that failed to contain fractures. The fractures Were nearly vertical and varied in width from those harely visible to as much as one millimeter. An alternative use for recycling of waste from bag house of iron ore sinter plant was tested by producing and evaluating" at laboratory scale, the self reducing cold bonded pellets. This waste was characterized and the self-reducing pellets were produced using anthracite coal fines as reductant and Portland cement or hydrated lime/Blast Furnace slag as binder. It was used the molar ratio of Fe2O3/C (fix) equal to 3. Evolution of cold strength with curing time, for different contents of binder, was evaluated. Cold strength of 200N/pellet was obtained, for sinter dust, after 10 days of curing. Suitable hot strength was also presented and no decrepitation and swelling were observed. Good fractional reduction was obtained at 950°C and 1137°C. These results show that this material may be used by the Self-Reducing Processes for hot metal production, as an alternative route for this dust destination.

A performance comparison of 14 rescue breathing apparatus was undertaken as an assessment of past and present worldwide technology. Rescue breathing apparatus are self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus used for entry into areas having atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life and health. Apparatus tested were the Biomarine BioPak 45, 60, and 240; the Draeger BG 4 and BG-174A; the Litton LITPAC II; the MSA Custom 4500 II Air Mask, Chemox, and McCaa; the Sabre Selected Elevated Flow Apparatus (SEFA); the Scott Rescue-Pak; the Siebe Gorman Aerorlox and Proto Ten; and the SurvivairLP-120. The apparatus were tested on an automated breathing and metabolic simulator at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Physiological parameters monitored during the testing were average inhaled CO2 and O2, minimum inhaled CO2, inhaled wet-and dry-bulb temperatures, and peak inhalation and exhalation breathing pressures. The metabolic demand on the apparatus was 1.35 L O2/min for most of the test with two 5-min intervals of 2.5 L O2/min, the first beginning 10 min into the test and the second beginning 10 min before the end of the rated duration of the apparatus. Results presented include apparatus service life and test-averages of monitored physiological parameters. Schematic drawings and photographs of the apparatus are also included. The Draeger BG-174A and BG 4 had the highest durations—295 and 291 min, respectively. The BG 4 hadthe lowest minimum inhaled CO2 levels, attesting to the effectiveness of its CO2-absorbent canister. The SabreSEFA had the lowest average inhaled CO2 levels, due mostly to the apparently low-dead-space mask andnose cup. The MSA Air Mask, the only open-circuit device tested, had the lowest wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, with the liquid-O2-source Siebe Gorman Aerorlox having the next lowest temperatures. The only apparatus with a CO2-absorbent not in a packed-bed design, the BG-174A, had the lowest exhalation pressures. The BG 4 had the highest level of positive pressure, with the Biomarine BioPak 60, Survivair LP-120, SEFA, and Litton LITPAC II nearly as high. The BG 4 had the lowest pressure swing, with the SEFA a close second.

The mine operated by the United Verde Copper Co. is situated near Jerome, Ariz., on the eastern flank of the Black Hills, at an elevation of approximately 5500 ft. (1676 m.) above sea level. The mine and the town of Jerome are located on a steep hillside, which slopes rapidly to the valley of the Verde River. The smelter town of Clarkdale is situated in the Verde valley 4.1 mi. (6.5 km.) distant in an air line from Jerome, and at an elevation of 3560 ft. The two towns are connected by the standard-gage railroad of the Verde Tunnel & Smelter R. R., a subsidiary of the United Verde Copper Co. This road is 11 mi. long and has a compensated 4 per cent. grade. At Clarkdale, it connects with the Verde Valley branch of the Santa Fe R. R. The narrow-gage (36-in.) line of the United Verde & Pacific Ry. was, until 1919, Jerome's only rail connection with a main trunk line. This road connects with a branch line of the Santa Fe system at Jerome Junction, after traversing 26 mi. of mountainous country. From the time of its location, in 1876, until its purchase by Senator W. A. Clark, of Montana, in 1889, the United Verde mine was worked on a small scale and shipments of high-grade gold-silver ore were made from the surface workings. The reduction of Mn3O4 to MnO has been investigated in a thermobalance apparatus. The charge was composed of manganese ore (decomposed by heating/calcination or pre-reduction to mainly Mn304) and coke. The material was charged to a crucible, which was suspended in the balance. CO-gas was distributed through a grid in the bottom of the crucible. Two sizes of ores were used; 2.4-4.8 mm and 6.7-9.5 mm. Coke particles were in the size range 4.8-6.7 mm. Experiments were conducted in the 900-1100°C temperature range. The composition of the product gas was monitored continuously. External mass transport between bulk gas and particle surface does not seem to limit the rate of reduction. Assuming that both diffusion through product layer and chemical reaction at the interface between MnO and Mn304 are rate controlling, the data was tried both in a shrinking core model and in a grain model using regression. The grain model gives the best physical description of the process, because the reactant is in fact a porous medium. With this model the effective diffusivity was calculated to be in the 1.5-6.10-5 m2/s range. The pore size was mainly between 0.1 and 10 um.

"The Chuktukon niobium-rare earth elements ore deposit is located in Siberia (Russia). Weathered carbonatite crusts are the basis of the ore deposit. The deposit itself is 3.5 km in length, about 800 to 1400 m in width and up to 200–300 m in thickness. The ores are composed of iron-manganese oxides (hydrogoethite, hematite, psilomelane, pyrolusite) and contain 3–7% of rare-earth phosphates (florencite, monazite) and 0.5–1% of niobium oxide (pyrochlore). The ore is completely finely dispersed and consists of oxide particles formed of compact, dense aggregates which makes ore dressing as well as leaching of the rare and radioactive elements very difficult. Several options for processing of these ores have been considered: 1) reduction of the iron oxides to magnetite followed by beneficiation with magnetic separation to produce a rare metal concentrate; 2) processing of the rare earth elements (REE) containing minerals by direct alkaline-acid treatment; 3) processing of the ores using nitric acid leaching in an autoclave.INTRODUCTIONThe Chuktukon niobium-rare earth metal ore deposit is located in Siberia, in the Krasnoyarsk region, 110 km from the Boguchan hydroelectric power station which has recently been commissioned. This mineral raw materials is capable of providing impetus for the modernization of the Russian rare metal industry because of its qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The deposit is located in a region of promising industrial development and is a part of the territoriy where the Russian Federation’s Program “Complex Development of the Lower Angara Region” is currenly being realized. The main program directions are creation and development of industrial activities in sectors such as power, metallurgy, oil and gas, gold, rare-metals, and timber. The program will aid the development of the niobium and rare-metal resources of the Lower Angara and neighbouring regions as well as increase the national production of REE and therefore import substitution (Lapin, 1997; Lomaev & Kuzmin, 2003; Lomaev & Serdyuk, 2011; Serdyuk, Lomaev, & Kontorovich, 2000)."

The magnetic susceptibilities of some ores and the major rock formations of the Precambrian Belt Supergroup in the Coeur d'Alene mining district were determined both in the laboratory by the use of the Gouy method and in the field with a Bison susceptibility unit. Trace element analysis of the same group of rock samples was also made using the atomic adsorption technique. Results of this preliminary study indicate that some correlation exists between the magnetic susceptibilities and the various rock formations. This may be useful for regional mapping and mineral exploration.

L?Afrique fait cependant figure d?exception : même en étant comblé de ressources naturelles exceptionnelles, les pays de ce continent croulent sous le poids de la pauvreté et de ses acabits que sont les maladies, la famine, la guerre et l?insurrection sociale. On reconnaît néanmoins qu?il y a des cas particuliers comme le Botswana, la Namibie, l?Afrique du Sud. Face à cette situation, beaucoup de scénarii ont été proposés sans pour autant porté les fruits espérés. Le rapport Brundtland suggère que le développement durable est la clé du succès car elle veille à la prospérité économique, à l?équité dans la société et à la pérennité dans l?environnement. Pour l?Afrique, beaucoup de facteurs doivent être considérés et les solutions se doivent d?être pratiques et éthiques. Le futur ingénieur des mines qui a écrit ce rapport, apporte sa vision de la situation non sans avoir auparavant analysé les faits. Cette démarche, qui se veut avant tout éthique, inclut les aspects sociaux, économiques et politiques. Introduction In the 40s, 50s and the 60s, many economists, among which Harold Hotelling from South Carolina University, thought that developing countries could reach socio-economical success by extracting their natural resources such as oil and minerals. The current economical disaster seems to have contradicted that belief and critics like Davis Graham (Colorado School of Mines) and Michael Ross (University of California at Los Angeles) even suggested that extractive activities stop in Africa. But the experts of the World Bank (Mining Department) and some mining and oil companies are committed to reverse the tendency by implementing a new approach. Considering the principles of sustainable development defined in the Brundtland report (1987), we decided to analyze the possibility of giving the extractive industry a catalytic role in creating a socially, economically and environmentally development in Africa. In other words, can we continue to mine and extract oil in Africa for its blossoming future under the ruling of the sustainable development? In the following, we start by explaining the African socio-economic and political context. After a brief definition of the sustainable development, we explain why, for Africa, some believe in the extractive industry and some don?t. In the end, we draw out conciliatory arguments.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

Missouri is a state rich in mineral commodities. There is a variety of types of mining as well as minerals in the state. Different phases of mining are controlled by a variety of state and federal laws. What I hope to do today is to present briefly some of the interaction and interplay that has occurred in the recent years between the mineral industry and the Missouri regulatory agencies, as well as some of the interactions by federal agencies. First a little history which dates back to the late 1600's. For many years Missouri has been a leader in the production of lead and zinc. In fact, recent studies have indicated that Missouri produces better than three-fourths of the nation's present lead supply. Less well known but important resource is iron mining. Some of these operations were the source of confrontation during the Civil War. Major battles were fought in and around Ironton, Missouri where iron mining has occurred for many years. One of the largest pelletizing operations in the state is currently located within the city of Ironton. Joplin, Missouri, the home of Thomas Hart Benton, the famous Missouri painter, has a history of lead and zinc mining, going back to the later 1800's. Many of the paintings by Benton contain reference to the early days of mining in Missouri. There is a Benton mural in the City Hall at Carthage depicting the early days of lead mining in that area. Later, the center of lead mining moved to southeast Missouri near Bonne Terre and Flat River. The names of the towns in this area reflect the history of mining, examples - Leadington, Old Mines, Rivermines, etc. The history of lead mining in Missouri has been referred to in some detail in various publications(l).

APPLICATION of seismic methods to the location of buried channels in placer mining is fairly common knowledge, yet some of the facets of seismic refraction surveys have remained obscure in their application to mining. This description by a member of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation team investigating bedrock at the Oso Dam site, may offer a lead to wider application of the method for bedrock determinations in engineering of mine and mill plants, tailing disposal, and water supply. It may also offer assistance in planning geological exploration in areas covered by overburden. Pertinent, and perhaps more than passingly significant, is that the seismic survey of the Oso dam site started at noon and was completed the afternoon of the next day. Location Oso dam site is on the Navajo River, Archuleta, County, Colo., 30 miles southeast of Pagosa Springs, Colo., 10 miles northwest of Chama, N. M. Bedrock at the proposed dam site is Mesa Verde Formation, Cretaceous age sandstone. The nearest good sandstone exposure is about 5/8 of a mile upstream from the location of the seismic determinations. The material above bedrock is sand and gravel with sandy loam soil covering benches above the river. The site appeared favorable, after a geologic and topographic reconnaissance, but overburden thickness was unknown. Exploratory drilling was not contemplated in the near future so a short seismic investigation was selected as the most suitable method of determining depth to bedrock. Field Procedure Geophysically, a seismic depth investigation is simply the measurement of depth from ground surface to the top of a layer which transmits seismic waves at a higher velocity. In this case the high-velocity seismic layer tentatively correlates with the Mesa Verde sandstone. Field procedure required a seismic explorationline or "spread" with 12 geophones set at measured intervals. Explosive charges were buried at few feet in the ground and detonated at shotpoints near the ends of the spread, and at intermediate points. The time of travel of the seismic waves from the shotpoints through the ground to each of the geophones along the spread was measured and recorded photographically with equipment housed in a field truck. The seismograph on each spread provided a time-travel graph. From it were computed the speed of seismic waves in various layers below the surface and depth to each different seismic layer below the shotpoint. In the case of the Oso dam site it was possible, in addition, to determine the depths below certain geophones, because there were only two seismic layers involved. Interpretation In seismic exploration waves are refracted from the top of layers which often correspond to divisions between subsurface formations. When drill holes are available the geologic logs offer a means of correlating stratigraphic breaks with seismic layers, improving reliability of seismic interpretation in terms of depth to bedrock or other geologic terms. There were no drill holes available in the case of the work at the Oso dam site. Geologic conditions appeared favorable for seismic technique because of excellent contrast in seismic wave velocity between the overburden and the Mesa Verde formation. The upper layer had a velocity of approximately 2500 fps and was interpreted as overburden, the lower layer had a velocity of approximately 9000 fps and was assumed to be the sandstone. These velocities are of the order expected in these materials. The seismographs obtained at the Oso dam site were excellent. The energy from the shot came in strongly at each geophone, giving an easily read record. Time-travel graphs plotted from wave arrival times were uniform and made interpretation comparatively easy. In Spreads 1 and 2 near the river the lower velocity layer was 12 to 15 ft deep. For the spreads on higher ground, or the bench south of the river, it was from 15 to 29 ft deep.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM The technique reported here involves measuring the air pressures generated within sealed boreholes located behind blasts. Results from twelve free face blasts in competent rock environments a represented. There were no instances of high pressure gas penetration, even at distances corresponding to less than one blast burden. Rapidly generated underpressures were measured in most holes, with the magnitudes of the peak pressures decreasing with distance behind the blasts. It has been proposed that the under pressures are the result of new volume created due to crack formation and overall rock mass dilation. The experimental evidence is consistent with this, including a correspondence of the onset times of the peak underpressures with the nominal firing times of the nearest blastholes. New post-blast cracks were observed when using borehole video cameras in the monitoring holes. A calculation of new volume produced within the monitoring holes is proposed as an indicator of damage. While the data exhibit considerable scatter, there is a power function dependence on scaled distance, which resembles that of typical vibration data. The data also lie within the normally quoted vibration regimes for rock damage and are consistent with measured extents of damage. It is concluded that this technique may provide an inexpensive and practical comparative measure of near-field rock damage due to blasting. It is further concluded that gas penetration is not a common phenomenon. Damage appears to be mainly attributable to the nearest blastholes and the control of charge mass in perimeter blastholes is emphasized for damage minimization.

INTRODUCTION Characterization of a site for the prediction and simulation of dynamic events requires the determination of mechanical properties of the rock at stress/strain levels and rates and at a scale appropriate for the events and critical structures involved. The structures of interest can be on the surface, underground, or designed to impact and penetrate into the site (projectiles). Dynamic events of interest are equally diverse: seismic waves from distance earthquakes or explosions; close-in phenomena associated with earthquakes and explosions; vibrations associated with heavy equipment or machinery; and stress transients associated with impact and penetration. The complexity of site characterization depends on two factors not specifically related to the nature of the site itself: the stress levels generated by the dynamic event and the sophistication of the prediction and simulation techniques. For very high stress levels, such as occur near a nuclear detonation, and for low stress levels, such as occur during seismic wave propagation, site characterization is simplified, and often certain details of the site are not particularly important, such as shear strength variations in the case of very high stress levels. In the intermediate stress range, however, all descriptive relations are non- linear, a complete finite strain constitutive model is required, and all details of the site, such as lithology and fracture distribution, become important. The site characterization must be complete enough to support the most sophisticated prediction and simulation technique that will be applied to the analysis of the dynamic event. The procedures of site characterization are illustrated in this paper by a specific dynamic event, projectile impact and penetration, and a specific site, an outcrop of Dakota Sandstone near San Ysidro, New Mexico. US 4,181,520 - Direct reduction of iron oxide ore to sponge iron in a rotary kiln. Ore is fed into the kiln along with coal briquettes and passed through a preheating zone and then a reducing zone countercurrent to the flow of a kiln atmosphere which includes air or other oxygen-containing gas. The agglomerated coal is heated at such a rate that it disintegrates into fine particles in the preheating zone. Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine-safety stations, and to F. H. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, France, and Germany. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine-safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as in the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres, should such atmospheres through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by those countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The first of these surveys will cover conditions in Great Britain.

"During the history of the sulphur industry there have been three distinct phases of production. Factors controlling supplies during these periods have shifted from demand for sulphur to demand for energy and a cleaner environment. The pattern of brimstone production is t raced through these phases and includes estimates of future supply; these indicate an involuntary excess production of some 20 million plus tons per year by 1980 unless some large-scale new uses are found. Traditional uses for sulphur, including fertilizer, chemicals, fibers, etc., are generally expanding slowly; how• ever, supply in ""by-product"" form alone will soon outstrip demand. The predicted oversupply situation can be corrected by the development of novel potential markets. Promising areas include construction materials, insulation and plastics, among others."

Discussion of the paper of E. C. HARDER, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2573 to 2586. I. C. WHITE, Morgantown, W. Va.-I have seen some of the great iron-ore deposits described in this paper. -One of these in the State of Minas Geraes appears to be an immense mountain of iron ore about 2,000 ft. in height. All over its surface from bottom to top may be seen large masses of rich iron ore, varying in weight from a few pounds to several tons, and from all that one can judge without exploitation, the quantity of available ore is certainly very large in this particular mountain. Whether it will prove a mere surface deposit or shell, like the famous Iron Mountain of Missouri, is for future exploration to determine. The question of transportation is the main factor in determining the availability for exportation of these Brazilian iron ores. There is no coal in Brazil that can be manufactured into coke without expensive previous treatment, since the best of the raw coal in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, and Parana, contains about 35 per cent. of ash, of which about 6 per cent. is sulphur, and coal of this composition cannot be utilized in iron smelting without purification. When I was chief of the Brazilian Coal Commission in 1904 to 1906, I had a cargo of this coal shipped to Balk, Germany, and treated in the great coal-testing plant of the Humboldt Engineering Works, located just across the Rhine from Cologne. It was found that by crushing and washing the Brazilian coal, it yielded 33 per cent. of briquetting coal, containing only 10 to 12 per cent. of ash (of which 1 per cent. was sulphur), and 42 per cent. of slack coal, with 25 per cent. of ash and low in sulphur, so that about 33 per cent. of the Brazilian coal could be converted into coke of fair quality, as shown by the following average of three analyses, using air-dried coal, of briquets made from the Barro Branco coal bed, State of Santa Catharina: Moisture 1.56 Volatile matter 31.66 Fixed carbon 56.73 Ash : 10.05 Total 100.00 Sulphur 1.34 Phosphorus 0.003 B.t.u 13,395

Large diameter steel tubular piles installed vertically or on a slight rake, offer many advantages as the foundations of major overwater bridge in regions of high seismicity. By proper selection of diameter and wall thickness, an optimum balance between stiffness and strength can be achieved. Under strong seismic motion, the piles will deflect and bend so as to reduce the acceleration forces transmitted to the superstructure, while still limiting drift. A major advantage of this concept is that the mass of the footing block is significantly reduced from that of the conventional pier. The design of the footing block requires great care in order to transfer the high shears and moments. Where the soils consist of significant depths of sediments, the kinematic interaction of soils, piles and structures must be considered. Moments will be a maximum just under the footing block. Filling the top portion of the pile with concrete will prevent local buckling and assure ductile behavior even under overload. Typically the piles will be long, with most or all of their support furnished by friction and will require the use of very large pile hammers to achieve the required capacities. Where the piles are founded on rock or in hardpan, sockets will be drilled and filled with reinforced concrete. For these piles, high moments can occur both at the head and just below the rock surface, so the concrete infill should extend the full length. This paper describes the use of tubular piles driven through the deep silty sands of the Jamuna River, Bangladesh, and also where socketed into the near-surface rock for the mail pylon pier of the new San Francisco-Oakland East Bay Bridge in California.
