The recycling of process water comes with increased electrolyte concentrations that affect water quality, which may in turn affect the flotation performance of valuable minerals (Hirajima et al, 2016). Electrolytes such as Ca2+, SO4 2- , Mg2+ and S2O3 2- have been surmised to have an impact on the action of flotation reagents such as collectors (Ikumapayi et al, 2012). Xanthate collectors are known to play a significant role in imparting hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces to enhance their flotation. The interaction between minerals and xanthates is well known to be electrochemical in nature. Such redox processes may be elucidated by electrochemical techniques. Since the mechanisms involving the interactions between electrolytes in process water with sulfide minerals and the subsequent adsorption kinetics of collectors are not well understood, this study therefore aims to provide fundamental knowledge to unpack the mechanisms involved when electrolytes interact with Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and how these interactions may affect xanthate adsorption. The interaction of sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) in the presence of electrolytes at increasing ionic strength was investigated by rest potential measurements, to explain the impact of electrolytes on the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs in the flotation process. Rest potential measurements for PdTe2 and PdS were conducted in an air saturated 0.05 M di-sodium tetraborate decahydrate solution, in the absence and presence of SIBX and electrolytes. It was found that the existence of sulfide and telluride on palladium affects the mechanisms in which electrolytes interact with Pd mineral surfaces. An increase in the ionic strength of Na2S2O3, CaCl2 and MgCl2, increased the interaction between the salts and PdS, thus decreasing the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdS. An increase in ionic strength for Na2S2O3 increased the interaction between Na2S2O3 and PdTe2 and therefore decreased the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdTe2. Other salts investigated in this study increased the rate of oxidation of PdTe2 with an increase in ionic strength thereby enhancing the interaction of SIBX and PdTe2. This study has shown that mineral type, electrolyte type and concentration all have an impact on the mechanisms that result in the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs.

Aerial photography was once a crude, uncertain tool. Today it is a precision mapping instrument which saves important time and money for strip mining and other industry. Aerial photography began in the boxkite days of aviation. The Army first used it for rough reconnaissance photographs. Then, in the early Twenties, industry began to use aerial photographs of their plants and facilities for advertising or annual reports. The quality of these pictures was not very good by today's standards, but this work began the development of better cameras, better lenses, better photographic techniques.

There have recently been executives at major metals companies who have recommended that Greenfield Projects not be pursued. Greenfield includes not only new geographical locations, but also new technologies and new types of feed materials. In the middle part of the 20th Century, two such projects were successfully commercialized to recover nickel from Cuban lateritic ores. One project (at Nicaro) used the Caron ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach and the other (at Moa Bay) a high pressure acid leach. How both of these projects dealt with these Greenfield issues will be reviewed, based on the original reports that described the research and development of the plants. This study will include a review of the critical ore characterization and sorting issues, as well as the extractive metallurgical, product recovery and equipment selection and sizing problems and how they were solved at each stage of project development, from laboratory through one or more pilot scale plants to start up and operation. In one case, a major revision of the plant was made after several years of operation to correct operating, equipment selection and materials of construction problems that hindered economical operation. These descriptions will provide a guide through the complicated and critical issues that in recent times have caused many companies to give up on similar development. Even with the more advanced analytical and computational tools available to today’s mineralogists, engineers and metallurgists, the basic concepts with which these projects successfully addressed their sets of problems are still required. In addition, upper management, now perhaps further removed from hands-on experience than was common then, will see how complicated problems require intense and detailed effort to avoid failure in the field and capital blowouts. Build it and we will make it run, kicking the can down the road and borrowing operating and design concepts incorrectly on technological issues, or nine year olds on a sugar high making financial decisions are not philosophies by which to succeed with Greenfield Projects.

Barrick Gold Corporation is the gold industry leader, with 25 operating mines and a pipeline of large, long-life projects located across five continents, in addition to large land positions on some of the most prolific mineral districts. Barrick's high level of commitment to sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship was recognized by Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) - World, for the third consecutive year in 2010. The potential for adverse environmental effects from acid rock drainage (ARD) and metals leaching (ML) and their financial implications for Barrick are key considerations in our environmental assessment and business development processes. Barrick's membership in the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) reflects the importance of these issues to our business. INAP's development of the Global Acid Rock Drainage (GARD) Guide (a best practices guide for acid rock drainage prevention) provides Barrick with an important tool to assist in the assessment of environmental and financial risks from ARD and ML associated with our planned and ongoing mining operations (INAP, 2009). In this paper we will discuss how Barrick incorporates the GARDGuide and its principles for ARD and ML prediction and prevention in our business development processes and the management of our operations. The GARDGuide serves as a key reference for our project environmental assessments and as a common link between our projects and operations management, consulting specialists, permitting and regulatory authorities and the public. We will discuss how the GARDGuide is being "syndicated" throughout Barrick as a standard of practice and present a case study of how it was used in a recent Barrick Business Development Project.

These proceedings consist of an overview of the in situ mining research currently being carried out by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers emphasize two general aspects of the in situ mining method: the environment and productivity. Both areas are extremely important, particularly because in situ leach mining is a relatively new mining method from a commercial point of view. Topics covered include the restoration of ground water, the selection of lixiviants, in situ mining of commodities other than uranium, in situ mining costs, the application of resistance measurements to in situ mining, an acid leach mining case history, and the use of branched boreholes for in situ mining. A bibliography of Bureau of Mines publications on in situ mining is appended.

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist and in locating them quickly, with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a single subject. The system will Initiate automatic shutdown of mining machinery when excessive concentrations of methane are encountered. The prime consideration: In the design were small size, Improved accuracy and reliability, fast response and a transient resistant power supply capable of reliable operation from any mine power source. The power supply contains an internal battery that provides operating power to the detection system prior to mining machine start-up or after machine shutdown. It all started with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, which establishes that Congress is committed to restore and maintain environ- mental quality. It directs all federal agencies to identify and develop methods and procedures so that environmental parameters and values will be given equal consideration in the decision-making process, along with economic and technical parameters. Section 102 of the Act directs, among other things, that all agencies will submit a detailed statement on: (1) the environmental impact of the proposed action, (2) any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented, (3) alternatives to the proposed action, (4) the relationship between local short term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long term productivity, (5) any irreversible and irretrievable committments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented. Passage of this act has been followed by other legislation, both federal and state. The Water Quality Act of 1970 puts teeth into the previously existing Federal Water Pollution Control Act by requiring a "certificate of reasonable assurance that the activity licensed will not violate the applicable water quality standards." The Clean Air Act of 1970 requires that the Environ- mental Protection Agency establish national air quality standards, as well as standards for significant new pollution sources.

Investigations and results on the refining of tungsten scrap applying electron beam melting (EBM) in vacuum are presented and discussed. In this work EB melting experiments were performed in single or double-melt operations with different power inputs and refining times for tungsten purification and recovery of multiple metals (including refractory and other metals such as Mo, Nb, Cu, Zn, etc.), which are alloyed elements or impurities with high concentrations in the initial materials. Evaluations for extraction of some valuable metals, generated in the condensate at their removal from the liquid metal during the refining process are provided. Efficient technological regimes for e-beam melting and refining that enable the simultaneous production of pure metal ingots and condensates that can be used directly or can be used for subsequent extraction of expensive and valuable metals are presented.

We have here an example of laborious work undertaken in the true scientific spirit and by right methods. Loose statements and rash conjectures are here brought to the test of chemical analyses. By such work only may we hope to reach reliable conclusions and finally to solve the complex problems presented by the occurrence of ore-deposits. Such work as this is not only scientific but Is in the highest degree practical; for while a crude and imperfect science, by interfering with the results of approved empirical methods, may be positively hurtful, a more perfect science must eventually become the only sure guide to practice. Such a more perfeet science can only be reached by such work as Dr. Don's. I am sure every member of the Institute will unite with me in the hope that Dr. Don will continue his work, and that his example will incite others to similar work. S. F. Emmons, Washington, D. This paper describes the process employed and the work undertaken to enable the surrender of the mine permit relating to the two tailings deposits at the abandoned Red Mountain Mine site near Rossland, BC. The first phase of the work undertaken was to provide urgent remedial work for protection of the environment, primarily through rehabilitation or replacement of surface water drainage systems. The second phase was to up-grade the water management systems to the appropriate level given their consequences of failure. The final phase of work is to ensure long term geotechnical stability of the facilities to the same level of risk. Establishment of a sustaining fund will facilitate long term monitoring and maintenance of the facilities.

Available literature published or abstracted in 1953 and 1954 relating to dust prevention and suppression has been summarized and reviewed in this report, and un-published information also is included to outline current practice for those interested in dust control in and around mines, tunnels, and quarries. More and more companies are realizing the value of controlling dust by incorporating suitable methods and devices in the planning stage. In preparation and crushing plants preliminary tests have been made of the fine materials to determine the best type of dust-control equipment to use, and the details of the quantities of air, the number of sprays, the dust-allaying fluids, and the location of hoods or enclosures have been determined in advance. Such planning has paid for itself in more effective control. Similar planning in a tunnel resulted in healthful conditions and low dust concentrations.

"Bonded magnets are important category in permanent magnets. They are made by one of the following processes: compression bonding, injection molding, extrusion, calendering. An overview of the various bonded magnet processes and properties of products made with different magnet materials along with their applications are discussed. The main emphasis will be on the use of bonded NdFeB and ferrite magnets.IntroductionBonded magnets are a major growth area in permanent magnets. Bonded magnets are made by any one of the following processes: Compression bonding; Injection Molding; Extrusion and Calendering [1,2]. Compression and injection molded magnets are rigid magnets. Materials used in calendering process produce flexible magnets. Only the extrusion process makes both rigid and flexible magnets. The binders used for the bonded magnets vary depending on the processes. Thermoset, thermo-plastic and elastomeric binders are respectively used in compression, injection and the calendering process. Extrusion molding uses elastomers or thermo-plastic materials. The most co=on magnetic materials, Ferrite, SmCo, Alnico and NdFeB can be used in any of the above processes either alone or in combination as hybrid magnets. Another material that has been developed for co=ercial application is SmFeN. Making the material has been challenging and it is being used in niche market applications in limited quantitiesIn the extrusion process, a highly loaded compound is used to produce strip or sheet and is continuously extruded through a die. In calendering the granulated compound is rolled to produce a continuous wide sheet. In the compression bonding process a uniaxial pressing force is used. These magnets have higher loading compared to injection molded magnets. In injection molding the material is forced into a mold cavity and has lower loading compared to compression molded magnets [2,3]. Most of the flexible magnets are made using extrusion and calendering processes and the most co=on magnet material is inexpensive ferrite. Flexible magnets have been made using rare earth materials, but on a very limited basis.The major advantages of magnets processed by extrusion and calendering are as follows: inexpensive tooling, automation; practically any 2D geometry; fast production rates; no chipping or breaking; a wide range of properties; on-line magnetization; easy to convert (e.g. cut, punch or shape).Compression bonded magnets are inexpensive to manufacture. They have higher magnetic properties compared to injection molded magnets; however lower than their sintered counterparts. The magnet shape is restricted to simple geometries and they require careful handling. Their isotropic nature allows complex magnetizing patterns."

Fibrous minerals are common in nature but asbestiform minerals are rare. The unique mineralogical characteristic common to all the asbestos minerals is their morphologic form (or habit of crystallization) as polyfilamentous fiber bundles. The individual fibrils within the bundles have a tendency to be very long with a narrow range of diameters and grow with their long fiber axis in parallel orientation to the bundle length. The asbestiform habit imparts to the asbestos minerals sufficient flexibility and tensile strength so that most can be woven into cloth. In the past application has focused on their ability to insulate against the transfer of heat. Many mine samples of coal are analyzed each year in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The analyses are made in connection with investigations relating to fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, the causes of accidents in coal mines, the geologic relations of coal beds, and the quality and the value of the coal and lignite in the public lands. The systematic collection and analysis of such samples in connection with fuel investigations was begun in 1904 at the Government fuel-testing plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. and was under the direction of the United States Geological Survey for six years. Descriptions of the coal samples collected between the beginning of this work, July 1, 1904, and the transfer of the fuel-testing and mine-accident investigations to the Bureau of Mines,July 1, 1910, were compiled and published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 22.' Descriptions and analyses of samples collected during the fiscal years 1911 to 1913 were published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 85.2 Descriptions and analyses of samples collected during the fiscal years 1913 to 1916 were published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 123.3 The present bulletin presents analyses and descriptions of samples collected during the fiscal years 1916 to 1919. In order that the material in this bulletin may be used to supplement that presented in Bulletins 22, 85, and ,123, the same plan of geographical classi- fication has been followed, the analyses and descriptions of the samples being grouped in alphabetical order according to the State, county, and town near which the mines or prospects sampled are situated.

IN discussing the waste upon which hinges, or is supposed to hinge, so largely the preservation of our national resources, the conclusions reached would be more reliable if actual ex¬perience were consulted, and fewer deductions were drawn from general statements, which are often the product of the imagination. It cannot be questioned that the value of by-products has not been sufficiently appreciated by us, and that our, tardiness in recovering the useful ingredients of the escaping gas of our coke-ovens is one of the most glaring instances of shortcoming in that direction. And yet even for that sin there is some palliation in the immature condition of affiliated industries. I presume that it is admitted, without argument, that, except under very exceptional conditions, all the elements cannot be recovered from most of the ores or natural products. which we treat. While it is a shame that the by-products from our coke-ovens should be dissipated, Edward W. Parker's report to the U. S. Geological Survey for 1906' supplies a fairly good excuse in justification of this appalling waste. He says (pp. 773 to 774.)

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) reviewed all available information regarding geologic and depositional processes contributing to potential coastal and offshore platinum group metal (PGM) placer deposits around the Goodnews Bay Mining District. The Bureau found that favorable environments for PGM along with gold and chromite enrichment include: (1) buried paleofluvial channels; (2) recent paleofluvial channels with little marine sediment overburden, (3) beach deposits, particularly in the upper swash zone and near back beach environments; (4) paleostrand lines; (5) shoal lag deposits inside the mouths of Goodnews and Chagvan bays; and (6) bases of far offshore tidal ridges which may represent reworked glacial deposits. Limited geologic and compositional (assay) data prevent determination of deposit size and grade of PGM mineralization for each deposit class. Future geologic sampling requirements for demonstration of identifiable offshore and beach PGM-bearing placers are discussed. Beach and offshore sampling programs conducted by the Bureau in 1986 will contribute additional information providing verification of specific deposit classes.

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America reports that an underground mine is the most difficult environment to illuminate (Rea, 2000). Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) are conducting ongoing studies designed to explore different lighting technologies for improving mine safety. Underground miners use different visual cues to escape from a smoke-filled environment. Primary and secondary escapeways are marked with reflective ceiling tags of various colors. Miners also look for mine rail tracks. The main objective of this paper is to compare different lighting types and ceiling tag colors to differentiate what works best in a smoke-filled environment. Various cap lamps (LED and incandescent) and lasers (red, blue, green) were compared to see which options resulted in the longest detection distances for red, green and blue reflective markers and a section of mine rail track. All targets advanced toward the human subject inside of a smoke-filled room to simulate the subject walking in a mine environment. Detection distances were recorded and analyzed to find the best cap lamp, laser color and target color in a smoke environment. Results show that cap lamp, laser color and target color do make a difference in detection distances and are perceived differently based on subject age. Cap lamps were superior to lasers in all circumstances of ceiling tag detection, with the exception of the green laser. The incandescent cap lamp worked best in the simulated smoke compared to the LED cap lamps. The green laser was the best color for detecting the tags and track compared to the red and blue lasers. The green tags were the easiest color to detect on the ceiling. On average, the track was easier for the subjects to detect than the ceiling tags.
