In 1995, the United States Congress abolished the Bureau of Mines in the US Department of Interior. But Congress preserved the safety and health research functions being performed at the Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers. These functions were transitionally housed in the US Department of Energy before permanently merging with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Department of Health and Human Services, in October 1996. Since the rnerger of the former Bureau of Mines with NIOSH, there has been an active evaluation of ongoing research activities, significant interaction with stakeholders, and the development of a process leading to "data-informed" priority setting. This paper reviews the current surveillance information concerning the level of injury and disease from mining work and discusses how research priorities are evolving to improve the contribution of research to the prevention of injury and disease.

Thank you Dr Barcza, President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, for inviting me to share our experiences in Australia as regards the competency movement and my Association?s experience in assisting engineers become managers. This is my second visit to South Africa, and I am struck by the similarities between our countries. This extends to the professional issues associated with engineering and competencies in particular. I propose to outline two exciting stories today. ? Development of competency standards for professional engineers in Australia. ? Development of a management programme which has assisted professional engineers regain positions of leadership in Australian industry and government. "L'Abitibi québécois a produit essentiellement de l’or, du cuivre, du zinc et de I' argent, ainsi que de faibles quantités de nickel, de plomb, de molybdène, de bismuth, de lithium, de fer et d’amiante. Depuis l’ouverture de la mine Horne en 1927, cent-cinquante mines ont contribué à la production de 1 420 tonnes d’or de 4,1 millions de tonnes de cuivre et de 4,7 millions de tonnes de zinc. Les productions minières annuelles ont été d'importance variable: des records de production ont été établis en 1955 pour I' or avec 35 tonnes et, vers 1965, pour le cuivre, le zinc et la quantile globale de minerai extrait avec respectivement 130,000, 275 000 et 13 millions de tonnes. Deux dépressions généralisées ont eu lieu, l’une vers 1946 et l'autre, a lafin des années soixante-dix. Des ralentissements de la production ont été observes pour le cuivre en 1953 et le zinc en 1959. Depuis le debut des années quatre-vingt. I' or et, de façon plus irreguliere, le zinc sont en progression, landis que le cuivre, malgre une hausse en 1983. pour suit son dec/in.La teneur de récupération des mines d’or est demeurée régulière et n’a subi qu’une faible diminution au cours des quarante dernières années. Célie du cuivre a diminué d'environ 50% dans la même période, landis que celle du zinc a subi d’import antes variations, aussi bien positives que négatives. Près des trois quarts des mines d'or ont une durée de vie inférieure à 12 ans et la distribution des tonnages de minerai extrait montre un maximum pour la classe de 100 000 à 1 million de tonnes. Du cote des mines de métaux de base, la durée de vie est plus étalée et les volumes de minerai ont une occurrence maximale dans la classe de 1 à 10 millions de tonnes.Concernant la distribution géographique de la production minière dans l'Abitibi québécois, le camp minier de Rouyn-Noranda vient en tête pour l’extraction de minerai et la production d’or et de cuivre. L’est sui vi par le camp de Val d'Or pour le minerai et l’or, landis que le camp de Chapais-Chibougamau occupe la deuxième place pour le cuivre avec une production équivalence a 60% de celle de Rouyn-Noranda. Le camp de Cadillac-Malartic suit de tres pres celui de Val d'Or pour ce qui est de I' or. Finalement, dans le casdu zinc, le camp minier de Joutel-Matagami domine largement avec une production qui a connu un développement accélère depuis 1963. Une analyse pré liminaire de ces données indique qu' i/ subsiste unpotentiel encore élevé de production d'or, décuivre et de zinc dans I' Abitibi québécois. ABSTRACTThe Quebec portion of the Abitibi belt has essentially produced gold, copper, zinc and silver, as well as some small quantities of nickel, lead, molybdenum, bismuth, lithium, iron and asbestos. Since the opening of the Horne mine in 1927, one hundred and fifty mines have produced 1420 tons of gold, 4,1 millions tons of copper and4,7 millions tons of zinc. Annual mine production has fluctuated: production records were established in 1955 for gold with 35 tons, and around 1965 for all extracted ore copper and zinc with respectively 13 millions, 130 000 and 275 000 tons. Two main recessions have occurred, the first around 1946 and the second during the late seventies. Cut backs in copper and zinc production occurred in 1953 and1959. Since the beginning of the eighties, gold production and to a lesser extent zinc production have been in progression. Except for a small jump in 1983, copper production is still declining.The average recuperation grade of gold mines has been quite steady and has only slightly diminished in the past forty years. The average copper recuperation grade was halved during the same time interval. For zinc there have been important ups and downs. At least three quarters of gold mines have an average lifespan of 12 years the tonnage distribution shows a peak in the 100 000 to 1 million tons class. Base metals mines show a more widespread life expectancy and have a tonnage peak in the 1 to 10 millions tons range"

Los proyectos Veladero, Jagüelito, el proyecto binacional Pascua-Lama y otros ubicados en la zona Valle del Cura, provincia de San Juan, Argentina necesitan una vía acceso que permita el tránsito de camiones capaces de transportar los insumos necesarios en sus etapas de construcción y explotación. En este sentido, el objetivo del trabajo estriba en seleccionar la alternativa más conveniente y así cuantificar los costos y beneficios derivados de la construcción de un camino de vinculación entre los proyectos mencionados y las localidades de Rodeo o Las Flores. La metodología aplicada es la comparación entre costos y beneficios entre las situaciones “con proyecto” (obra ejecutada) y “sin proyecto” (situación actual), de forma que en un futuro, la construcción del camino estudiado posibilitará el abastecimiento de insumos a los yacimientos ubicados en el Valle del Cura, provincia de San Juan.

Water-quenched samples were taken from a commercial flash furnace at three levels along its reaction shaft during operation at high feed rate. The samples were subjected to a series of analysis and observation. Such processes of the feed in reaction shaft as oxidation, desulfurization, melting, slag and matte formation and etc., variations of particle size along axial and radical direction of the shaft are investigated. The following smelting mechanism in reaction shaft named as “Multi-particle and multi-phase fusion model” is proposed: (1) Fragmentation and collision of concentrate particles take place simultaneously in reaction shaft with particle size growing up. Collision produces large-size “unit melt” which falls into the reaction layer in the settler bath. (2) In the settler reaction layer below the shaft, weak bath smelting reactions take place among the shaft products, producing final matte and slag which separate into two layers. (3) The processes in the shaft are all progressive along the whole height of the shaft. The predominant reaction in the shaft is oxidation, not reduction.

"A computer model has been developed to predict grain structures in alloys solidified under unidirectional flow using a combination of three techniques -- solution of the equations for flow of an incompressible fluid bounded by curved surfaces by the SOLA-SURF algorithm, calculation of heat flow by a finite difference method, and simulation of grain formation by a two-dimensional cellular automaton (CA) model. The changing rigid surface has been taken into account. Heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation are considered, and the growth kinetics of a dendrite tip are evaluated by the Kurz-Giovanola-Trivedi (KGT) model. These calculations were applied to solidification of an Al-4.5% Cu alloy flowing over a chill on the bottom of a channel, a system for which experimental results were available. Using a variety of flow rates and superheats, agreement between the computed and experimental results were very good including transitions between columnar and equiaxed grains, the aspect ratio of the grains, and the inclination of the grains to the flow.IntroductionModeling of casting and solidification processes has developed over the years along two distinct tracks: (1.) modeling of macroscopic heat transfer and fluid flow for design purposes, and (2.) modeling of microscopic processes such as nucleation and growth in order to improve the scientific understanding of the phenomena involved. The present work is an attempt to combine the macroscopic and microscopic approaches for the solidification of an alloy flowing over a chill. The specific case chosen is that of an aluminum-4.5 % copper alloy flowing linearly over a water-cooled copper chill for which experimental results were available over a range of flow rates and superheats. For the macroscopic calculations, the SOLA-SURF algorithm for solution of the twodimensional fluid flow equations was combined with the finite difference method (FDM) for calculating heat transfer. For the microscopic calculations, heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation were considered, and the growth kinetics at the dendrite tips were evaluated. The cellular automaton (CA) technique was used to apply the microscopic kinetics to the temperature and .flow conditions."

MUFULIRA Copper Mines, Limited, conducted tests on the concentrator in 1942 to determine which type of ball mill, that is, Conical Trunnion overflow or Cylindrical Grate discharge, produced the greater quantity of finished product at the lowest cost. All the data which follows applies to Mufulira ore and to the particular degree of grinding produced with the classifiers installed at Mufulira concentrator. Test Procedure: The test was carried out using ball mills No. 1 to 9 (conical trunnion overflow) as the standard with which to compare No. 10 (cylindrical grate discharge mill). The conical trunnion overflow ball mills are 10 ft diam by 72 in., and the cylindrical grate discharge mill is a No. 99. Each mill runs in closed circuit with a Dorr type DSFX classifier 8 ft wide by 30 ft long. The feed is considered as being identical to all ten units. The figures for the test were derived as follows. Dry Tons Milled: For No. 10 unit (cylindrical grate discharge mill) this figure was taken from the ball mill weightometer, which was corrected for error, and then for moisture content. The weightorneter was checked twice a week during the test, and the error did not exceed 3 pct at any time. The moisture was obtained from a 24 hr moisture sample taken by the ball mill operator hourly, and placed in a closed bucket. The sample was cut where the conveyor drops the feed into the ball mill chute. The Mill Sampling Department made a daily moisture determination on this sample. To obtain the dry tons on units No. 1 to 9 the No. 10 figure was deducted from the month's dry tons milled figure, which, in turn, was taken from the crusher weightometer tons corrected for weightometer error and moisture. All tons reported in this test are short tons of 2000 lb. Ball Mill Hours: This was taken daily from the Shift Boss reports giving actual running hours for each unit. Screen Analyses: Coarse Heads (Ball Mill Feed): The monthly composite coarse heads screen analysis, done by the Mill Sampling Department, was used for the minus 200 mesh in the feed to the mills. F. X. Classifier Overflow: The ball mill operators took an hourly 24 hr sample of the overflows of units No. 1 to 9. This was a hand sample, but cut with a special cutter, and is believed to be very reliable. On No. 10 unit, an hourly 24 hr sample, and an hourly shift sample were cut in the same way. These five samples were split, filtered, and dried by the Research Department and were then wet screened on a 200 mesh screen. The average of the three shifts samples on No. 10 unit had to check the 24 hr sample within 1.5 pct to be acceptable. A weighted composite was cut each day from both 24 hr samples, and at the end of each month it was screened as follows: Wet screened through 325 mesh, the plus 325 then screened on a rotap for 15 min through 65, 100, 150, 200, and 325. This was done in duplicate. All splitting, drying, and screening of samples was done by one of the Mill Research staff, to insure accuracy. F. X. Classifier Overflow Densities: These were taken from the Shift Boss reports. Densities were taken by the ball mill operator every hour. In 2009 China mined 2.695 billion metric tones (Gt) of raw coal. It is estimated that only 3-5% or roughly 135 million metric tones (Mt) of these were mined from 300 some surface operations. Except for a dozen or so large modern operations, most of China's surface coal operations are small by western standards, with annual production ranging from a few thousand tones to 300,000 metric tones (mt). Depending on the size of operations, equipment used range from small trucks and shovels to large bucket wheel excavators and draglines in sizable pits. This article provides a brief overview of China's surface mineable coal reserves, mining methods commonly used and increasing environmental concerns; introductions of several large surface operations are also provided.

"Continuous pressure filtration is a modern process for the mechanical dewatering of flotation concentrates of coal and similar coal slurries. This method will give a lower moisture content than classical vacuum filtration, the improvement lying in the range 5% to 15%. Eighteen coal slurries have been examined in this survey. They are representative of a wide spectrum of filtered slurries. IntroductionDuring the last five years, a number of coal slurries have been tested either in the laboratory or with a pilot plant. The test pressure ranged from one to six bar. The results have been evaluated by mean s of a computer. Determination of the filter capacity and the resulting moisture content and energy consumption has been made with respect to the continuous pressure filter, Amafilter construction-type KDF (Fig. I) . Standard sizes of these filters are 60 m2, 90 m2 and 120 m2.The continuous pressure filter is a horizontal filter with a level tank. Six filter axles are mounted on a rotating main shaft, each with a particular number of elements attached. The elements rotate on their axes and move along a circular trajectory. Periodically the elements submerge into and emerge out of the slurry. A constant air pressure is maintained above the suspension, thus providing the pressure gradient necessary for filtration. The filtrate together with the dewatering air flows through the elements into the hollow axle and out of the filter."

"In the 1960’s, when large flotation machines appeared on the market, this was a part of a world-wide trend towards the use of ever larger machine units.One factor that has played a decisive part in this development is the increased of the amounts of ore that have to be handled as the exploitation of successively poorer ores becomes necessary. The advancing application of instrumentation and automation has worked in the same direction.In 1970, a working group was set up within Outokumpu Oy, for the purpose of flotation machine development. The principal task of this group was to be the design and development of- a new type of rotor of increased efficiency, especially for the dispersion of large amounts of air- a mechanical-pneumatic flotation machine of substantially larger size that existing plant.This development project required an extensive program of theoretical investigation and experimental studies at several concentration plants of the company.The commonest flotation machine presently used in the concentration plants of Outokumpu Oy is the VK-3. It is of the mechanical-pneumatic type, and the volume of its cell tanks is 2.5 m3 per shaft. This machine was developed within the company, and its first development phase i s represented by the OKKO 3, built for the Kotalahti concentrator in 1959. It was, in its time, comparable in volume to the largest machines that were then in use anywhere in the world."

Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man's first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930's the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious. In addition to agricultural and building lime the sales statistics compiled annually by the Bureau of Mines include lime sold to the steel and other metallurgical industries as refractory and fluxing material, as well as that used by paper mills, glass works, tanneries, and water-treatment plants. These major uses normally consume about 86 percent of the domestic sales. The remaining 14 percent includes lime sold for use in the manufacture of alcohol, alkalies, bleaches, calcium acetate, calcium carbide, coke gas and byproducts, glue, insecticides, oils and fats, paints, and rubber, in the refining of salt, in the manufacture of sand-lime and slag brick, in the disposal of sewage and garbage, in the manufacture of silica brick, in the refining of sugar, in the textile industries, and in wood distillation. Many other uses are also known for which complete sales data are not available.

Although the principal market for diatomite in the United States is in the East,4 production of the material is presently restricted to the West, because the deposits are larger, mining costs are cheaper, and the quality of product is better than that obtained from other domestic deposits. However, Tallahatta diatomite, occurring in Choctaw and Clarke Counties, Ala., has a freight rate advantage, which should encourage competition for those market that are now being supplied with the purer diatomites from the western deposits. For this reason, diatomite occurrences in the Tallahatta formation were examined by the Bureau of Mines and physical properties of samples from the deposit were determined to obtain additional data for use by any potential producer who wished to evaluate the material for its commercial possibilities. In 1894 K. M. Cunningham5 found that the buhrstone formation (now known as the Tallahatta formation) contained "siliceous shells of marine diatoms, radiolaria and foraminifera, thus being rather of the nature of tripoli or diatomaceous earth than of a true clay." Cooke6 and Semmes7 also reported the Tallahatta formation to be composed principally of diatomaceous earth with accompanying beds of sand, clay, and sandstone.

"Decomposition of ammonium tetramolybdate to prepare Mo03 using silicon carbide crucible in microwave fields was investigated. The results were analyzed Using TG-DTG and X-ray diffraction. Meanwhile, the effects of heating rat, material thickness, socking time, socking temperature on the structure of preparing Mo03 were studied. TG-DTG curves show that the decomposition process of ammonium tetramolybdate is only one stage, in the temperature range 300-350°C, whose begin to decompose when temperature increases beyond 300°C. The molybdenum trioxide was prepared by thermal decomposition. The quality ofMo03 was not affected under the heating rat is 12°C/min. It was beneficial for decomposition ratio with the lower material thickness, longer soaking time, and higher soaking temperature. XRD curves showed that it is viable method for preparation of Mo03 by decomposition from ammonium tetramolybdate in microwave fields.IntroductionMolybdenum is widely used in national defense, aviation, industrial and agricultural production as rare refractory metal. Molybdenum trioxide is vital raw materials for the process of preparation of molybdenum. The traditional production technology of molybdenum oxide is that ammonium tetramolybdate is calcined in rotary kiln or 4-tube furnace [J,2J. But the longer production time, the higher production cost, the lower furnace thermal efficiency, and bigger the energy consumption, especially the powder is easy to leak, the working environment is poor by using rotary kiln [ 3 l _ The particle of molybdenum oxide is non-uniform by using 4-tube furnace because of the uneven temperature of every tube and the poor exhaust of boat bottom [4l _ However microwave heating is quick and uniformity, it is a meaningful research that the microwave is used in the process of calcining ammonium tetramolybdate."

The flotation-related properties of hexanol derivatives and mono-alkyl ethers of propylene oxide, which include many important flotation frothers (e.g. MIBC, DF-200, DF-250, DF-1012, etc.) have been studied. The obtained results show that the DFI (Dynamic Foamability Index) - CCC (Critical Coalescence Concentration) plot can be used to classify flotation frothers. The frothers characterized by low CCC and high DFI values have properties of strong flotation frothers, while those with high CCC and low DFI values are more selective. The proposed frother classification system, based on simple CCC and DFI measurements, provides, for the first time, a solid ground-work for characterization of the flotation frothers.

GEM (Geologic Element Motion) is a Discrete Element Method (DEM) capability for blast-induced heave simulation with a very fast computational algorithm that can efficiently treat many different element shapes by utilizing alternating arcs and lines. GEM calculates rock motion from a knowledge of the gas pressure moving the elements. This requires an expression for the pressure vs volume, or the adiabat, of the explosion product gases. This work uses an analytical expression for the adiabat derived from the explosive’s properties. The effect of the explosive detonation pressure in crushing an annulus of rock, and setting up a shock wave, is termed Brisance. GEM incorporates a working hypothesis for the deleterious effect of Brisance on subsequent rock motion.

Among these are: (1) the effect of producing rate on total oil recovery; (2) the effect upon well productivity and ultimate recovery of the pressure level maintained during the producing life of the reservoir; (3) the economic advantage of full or partial pressure maintenance; and (4) estimate of the rate of gas production and injection and the possible purchase of gas under conditions of full pressure maintenance to ascertain compressor facilities needed. All of these factors can be evaluated only when a reliable method is employed for determining reservoir performance in gravity-drainage reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to present a general method for calculating the performance of a gravity-drainage reservoir. This method is applicable for conditions of complete pressure maintenance, partial pressure maintenance and normal pressure depletion. Provisions are made to take into account variations throughout the reservoir of reservoir configuration, changes in permeability and fluid composition. Based on the method presented in this paper, an IBM 650 computer program has been developed. The past performance of an actual gravity-drainage reservoir producing under conditions of declining pressure and no gas injection was duplicated using this program. INTRODUCTION In tilted reservoirs the production of oil is influenced by drainage of oil from upstructure to downstructure locations. When this downstructure drainage of oil is sufficient to cause effective segregation of the gas and oil in a reservoir, the reservoir is usually classified as a segregation drive or gravity-drainage reservoir. (Discussion will be restricted to gravity-drainage reservoirs which have no encroachment of edge water.) The important feature in gravity-drainage reservoirs is the density difference between reservoir oil and gas. These phases tend to segregate in the reservoir with the result that in the gas cap the oil saturation is maintained at a higher level by drainage of oil from the gas-cap area. Oil can be produced from the oil zone at a low gas-oil ratio and reservoir energy is thereby conserved. The standard material balance in not adequate for predicting gravity-dramage reservoir performance because it does not take into account the difference in saturation above and below the gas-oil contact. Several authors'.' have presented methods for calculating the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs in which reservoir pressure is maintained constant by gas injection into the gas cap. Using some simplifying assumptions, these methods can be employed with a desk calculator to give acceptable results. The problem of predicting the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs under the conditions of declining reservoir pressure is many time more complex than that of constant pressure. fierefore, attempis to develop a method suitable for desk calculation have required excessively simplified assumptions. In the past several years, highspeed digital computers have become more widely available for reservoir engineering problems. These corn puters are well suited to problems such as the prediction of the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs with pressure decline. Many of the simplifying assumptions necessary for hand computation can be eliminated so that a realistic approach to the gravity-drainage process can be made. CONCEPTUAL PICTURE OF OIL MOVEMENT IN GRAVITY-DRAINAGE RESERVOIRS Before attempting to develop an analytical treatment for conditions occuring in a gravity-drainage reservoir, a concept should be formed concerning the movement of fluids in the reservoir as oil is produced. A review of the literature'.' shows that it is customary to classify gravity-drainage operations into two categories—(1) with complete pressure maintenance, and (2) with declining pressure. The same line of reasoning will be followed in presenting the concept of the movement of fluids in the reservoir because it is easier to visualize the movement of fluids under conditions of complete pressure maintenance. After discussing complete pressure maintenance, an analogy will be made between that and the case of declining pressure. It should be kept in mind throughout that the final aim for the problem of solving gravity-drainage performance with digital computers will be to develop a general program for any kind of gravity-drainage reservoir. COMPLETE PRESSURE MAINTENANCE One feature which is generally common in gravity-drainage reservoirs is a gas cap located at the top of the structure. This is shown in Fig. 1(a). An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. he leaching behavior of palladium in ammoniacal solutions has been investigated by using the rotating disk technique in an autoclave. The study included the effect of rotating speed, temperature, oxygen pressure, composition of ammoniacal solutions, and catalyst on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was discussed in view of the thermodynamics and a kinetic model. Even though the potential-pH diagram suggests that palladium metal can dissolve in ammoniacal solutions at room temperature, it was found that the dissolution was too slow at temperatures below 100°C but was significantly improved at higher temperatures. It was also found that the rotating speed of palladium disk had no effect on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy was found to be 69.7 kJ/mole. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the dissolution of palladium is controlled by chemical reaction.
