The liquidus curve of the Mg-Pb system was accurately redetermined. The compound Mg2Pb decomposes peritectically at 538.2° ± 0.3°C to liquid and to a compound p' which melts congruently at 35.0 at. pct Pb and 549.0° ± 0.3°C. The solidus curve of ß' was determined. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that 4' has an orthorhombic structure. Activity values of magnesium calculated from the phase diagram agree with those published in the literature. EXPERIMENTAL thermodynamic properties of binary metallic systems have to be consistent with values calculated from the phase diagram. In systems forming intermetallic compounds the shape of the liquidus curve near a compound is determined by the thermodynamic properties of the coexisting solid and liquid phases. Hauffe and Wagner' neglected the temperature dependence of the chemical potentials and obtained the potential differences of the components of the liquid alloys, relative to stoichiometric liquid. Their calculations were based on the liquidus curve and on the heat of fusion of the compound, and were only valid near the congruent melting point. Steiner, Miller, and Komarek2 developed equations which account for the temperature dependence and obtained the chemical potentials of liquid Mg-Sn alloys over the entire phase diagram from the liquidus and solidus curves and from enthalpy values with the pure components as the standard states. The Mg-Pb phase diagram has been studied by several investigators whose results have been compiled and critically evaluated by Hansen.3 Although the liquidus curve was poorly defined, the general features of the diagram, i.e., one congruent melting compound, Mg2Pb, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and limited terminal solid solubilities, seemed to be suitable for a similar thermodynamic analysis. A careful redeter-mination of the liquidus by thermal analysis revealed, however, the existence of another compound. The liquidus curve between the two eutectics was precisely delineated and the structure and solidus curve of the new compound were investigated. The revised phase diagram was thermodynamic ally analyzed to evaluate the activity of magnesium in the liquid alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The magnesium metal (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) had a purity of 99.99+ pct; lead (American Smelting and Refining Co.) contained 99.999 pct Pb. Most experiments were carried out in graphite crucibles. Several experiments were made in high-purity alumina (Triangle R.R., Mor-ganite, Inc.) and in Armco iron crucibles to test the inertness of the graphite crucibles. Chemical analysis of magnesium and detailed description of the procedure for thermal analysis have been given previously. For the determination of the solidus curve of the compounds, specimens of initial composition Mg2Pb were equilibrated in a closed isothermal system with magnesium vapor. The source of the magnesium vapor was an alloy which had a gross composition lying in the 0' + L field at the temperature of equilibration. As equilibrium was approached, the specimens lost magnesium to the two-phase reservoir thereby lowering the activity of magnesium in the specimens until activity and composition equaled that of the ß'/ß' + L boundary. Crucibles (1.9 cm ID by 2.2 cm OD by 4.1 cm high) and tightly fitting lids were machined from a molybdenum rod; small, shallow trays were fashioned from thin (0.005 in.) molybdenum sheet, and all the molybdenum components were degreased in hot carbon tetrachloride and then dried. The pieces were then degassed in vacuum at 950°C for about 6 hr. The two-phase alloy was placed at the bottom of the crucible and small specimens of the Mg2Pb compound, weighed on an analytical balance, were placed in two molybdenum trays above the two-phase alloy. The crucible was closed by forcing its lid on and then inserted in a titanium crucible. This crucible was evacuated, flushed twice with argon, and welded under argon. The specimens were equilibrated for about 1 week in a resistance furnace regulated by a Celectray controller, and the runs were terminated by water quenching. The specimens were again weighed and the equilibrium compositions were calculated on the basis that the weight losses were solely due to a loss of magnesium to the two-phase alloy. The structure of the B' phase was investigated by the Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction technique. Refdist is a simple but valid approach to planning or analyzing a test-vs-control plant trial that uses accumulated plant performance data to calculate objective criteria for judging the trial outcome. Refdist calculations and results are explained and illustrated with data typical of the mining industry. Findings from a simulation study of Refdist statistical properties are reported. Suggestions for dealing with messy data situations are offered.

Concentrated solar energy can be used as heat source for the production of metals. One of the most promising respective processes, the solar carbothermic production of Zn from ZnO, is investigated within the European research project SOLZINC, a cooperation of institutes and industries from France, Germany, Israel, Sweden and Switzerland. The solar produced Zn can be used as commodity or as an energy carrier for further processing on demand to electricity in Zn-air fuel cells/batteries or to generate hydrogen by reaction with steam. In both cases the Zn is oxidized to form ZnO, which can be recycled back to the solar plant. In these cyclic processes Zn acts as a means to store and eventually transport solar energy. Second product of the solar process step is a CO-rich offgas, which may e.g. drive a gas engine or may be shifted to hydrogen in a conventional reaction with steam. A pilot plant using 300kW concentrated solar power input has been constructed and operated successfully. 86mass-% of ZnO mixed with 14mass-% of charcoal are reacted to produce Zn and CO at a temperature of about 1200°C, yielding about 50 kg gaseous Zn per hour. Zn-dust with 95% purity is recovered from the offgas system that was designed to produce Zn for Zn-air fuel cells. Based on the results and findings from the pilot plant, a two tons Zn/h solar demonstration plant has been designed conceptually. Cost studies have been performed and scenarios for producing electricity or H2 via these ZnO/Zn-cyclic processes are evaluated.

Transitions between geological/geotechnical soil units have a critical impact on the operation and performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling is used to quantify the uncertainty in soil transition locations. This paper presents two unique soft-ground tunneling case studies where the results from the geostatistics-based probabilistic modeling are compared to the TBM data and as-encountered ground conditions derived from the actual TBM data. The assessment enhances the confidence in using geostatistics to improve ground awareness for efficient tunnel construction, minimizing different site condition (DSC) claims, and improving decision-making on tunnel projects.

The Bureau of Mines, through a 4-year program of combined in-house and contract research, has developed the necessary hardware and software technology to provide rugged, reliable automatic fire protection for surface mining mobile equipment. One element of this program was a continuing effort to help foster rapid mining industry acceptance of the technology by keeping end user costs reasonable. This report is an analysis of the economic impact of surface mining mobile equipment fires and the cost benefit of utilizing automatic fire protection systems to abate these losses.

In the combination induction-electrical log used at present in the field, the induction logging tool is appropriate for the investigation of moderately invaded formations. A new induction sonde with a radius and investigation about twice as large has been developed recently for the case of deep invasion. It has very nearly the same vertical resolution as the present sonde so that thin beds are defined as accurately as before. The characteristics of the new tool are described, the corresponding interpretation charts are given and field examples are discussed. The design of the sonic logging tool has been modified to improve the calibration and the reliability. The fact that porosity can be accurately recorded by means of the sonic log has prompted new interpretation procedures for saturation estimation, wherein the data concerning the various permeable beds in a given well are correlated. One approach consists of plotting transit time vs true resistivity, with an appropriate scale. With this approach, saturations can be estimated conveniently even in cases where formation water resistivity is not well known. In another approach, a comparison is made of the values of the formation waters computed from the re- sistivity and sonic logs. Using the concept of continuity, this procedure makes possible a quick determination of zones of saturation in shaly sands and/or in case of appreciable variations of formation salinities with depth. It has been found that the comparison of porosity from the sonic log with the apparent porosity computed from a short-investigation resistivity log may reveal, in many cases, the presence of residual oil and thus detect potentially productive formations; this procedure is valuable when the true formation resistivity and the resistivity of the formation water are in doubt. INTRODUCTION During the past year, the efficiency of log interpretation has been vastly improved. The improvements have largely resulted from the introduction of a deep-investigation induction device and from the application of new interpretation techniques that utilize sonic vs resistivity readings. Since the new interpretation techniques depend, in part, upon good values of true formation resistivity, the new induction log will be discussed under Part I. The sonic interpretation techniques will be studied under Part 11. Early in 1959, the 6FF40 induction equipment was introduced in the field. This device was designed for a better approach to true formation resistivities in deeply invaded zones. The greatly improved radial investigation of the 6FF40 equipment has been achieved without sacrificing vertical resolution. The first combination induction-electrical log, the 5FF40, was introduced as a standard tool in 1956 for the logging of wells drilled with fresh muds. The tool has received wide industry acceptance in the United States. 'The 5FF40 induction log has a radial investigation sufficient to overcome average depths of mud filtrate invasion. At 5d invasion, for example, the 5FF40 induction log will read about 1.4 R. in a water sand where R., = 10R,. At 10d invasion, such induction log would read 2.45 R. in the same water sand. In either case, the effects of invasion would not be sufficiently great to cause a water sand to be mistaken for a shale-free oil- or gas-producing zone. Some formations, however, invade deeply — in excess of 10d. Such water zones could be mistaken for oil-or gas-saturated sands unless the porosity balance' can clearly make the distinction. Research over a period of ten years resulted in the development of an efficient automatic ore feed regulator for mill grinding circuits. The facilities that a large mining company gave the inventor made it possible to develop the control apparatus under actual mill operating conditions. The Littlewood Regulator automatically determines the optimum power input at which a mill should operate, and controls the rate of ore feed to maintain this optimum power for any predetermined operating conditions. It is to be noted that the optimum power varies with many factors such as ball, rod, and mill liner wear, therefore the regulator is designed to automaticall keep itself properly calibrated. To efficiently control the rate of ore feed of a mill grinding circuit the regulator analyzes and interprets all power changes of the mill motor. The critical electrical measurements for this type of control are made possible by a patented device that has the ability to detect and integrate minute changes in power. In ball mill operation the small but significant changes in power serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the rate at which ore accumulation takes place within the mill, and in rod mill operation they serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the degree of rod spread.

Data from the Bureau of Mines routine method for the analysis of crude petroleum are used to characterize crude oils. Some data are used directly while other data are used to calculate the aromatic) naphthene) and paraffin contents of the distillation fractions and the correlation index of the paraffin-naphthene portion of the fractions. The calculated properties show significant differences in composition between crude oils. The methods of calculation and interpretation of data are explained and illustrated.

This paper describes the Boroo Gold Company (BGC) ore processing plant which is the first CIL/CIP plant in Mongolia. BGC is the first foreign investment in Mongolia since 1990 and follows the highest safety and environmental standards. Commissioning of the plant commenced in October 2003 and commercial production began in March 2004. Gold recovery is by gravity and conventional leaching and carbon adsorption. Detoxification of the leach tails is by the SO2/Air method before discharging the tails to the tailings pond. Ore types treated at Boroo are predominantly oxide with some transition ore as mining reaches the lower sulphide zone. There are several interesting technological issues and projects ongoing at Boroo which will also be discussed.

The only one reverberatory furnace smelting in Japan has been alive in Onahama Smelter, Onahama Smelting and Refining Company. The fuel for the reverberatory furnaces had been changed from bunker C-oil to mainly coal and partially waste tires to reduce the energy cost. The steam, recovered by the waste heat boilers of the reverberatory furnaces, has been utilized fully for the power generation to save the purchase power. Copper concentrate has been smelted also by injection through tuyeres in the P.S. converters since 1983. The amount of concentrate, treated in the converters, was increased by the construction of small oxygen plant in December, 1990. In the paper, the current practice and improvements in the reverberatory and converter operations are described.

Isa Limestone Quarry with an annual production capacity of 18 million metric tons is known as the largest limestone deposit in Japan located in the mountainous region about 20 mile northwest of Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan adjacent to Isa Cement Factory to which it belongs, and which constitutes a mainstay of Ube Industries? cement operating division. Isa Cement Factory is equipped with a N.S.P. kiln of capacity of 3 million metric tons per year, which is the largest of its type in the world. Geographically, it is situated in the south- western tip of the Mainland of Japan (Mid City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) and is bordered by the scenic Akiyoshi Karstic Plateau which is world famous for its huge stalactite grotto.

To improve understanding the effect of heavy metal chromium on soil biota, laboratory incubation experiment was carried out in the soils contaminated artificially with five concentrations of chromate (50, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg kg_1 soil) over time (35 days). The population and diversity of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes in soils were measured as indicators of soil microbial processes in the disturbances mentioned above. Incubation experiment results elucidated that the population and diversity of microorganisms decreased with increasing Cr (VI) concentration. Furthermore, various microorganisms showed different sensitivity to total Cr contamination. The sensitivity of microbial population to chromium contamination was in the order: actinomycetes >bacteria>fungi. The resulted implied that the microorganism can be used as an indicator of chromium contamination.

Processing of phosphate ore sample was investigated for increasing phosphate content and reduction of its gangue minerals such as carbonates and silicates. Experimental designs were per-formed using Taguchi method. Different flotation methods were investigated for Moundon phosphate ore sample and three methods were used as follow: direct cellophane flotation, reverse calcite flotation and reverse quartz flotation. Because of the sensitivity of cellophane flotation to slime content, prior desliming was carried out before the experiments. Direct flotation experiments carried out and a concentrate contained 23.80% P2O5, 6.88% SiO2 and 72.33% recovery were produced. The achieved P2O5 content in the produced concentrate from reverse flotation of calcite was 26.44% and the recovery was 82.56%. The concentrate products obtained at optimum conditions by direct flotation of phosphate and indirect flotation of calcite were subjected to indirect flotation of calcite and direct flotation of appetite and final concentrates with P2O5 grade of the order of 24.19% and 26.96% were obtained, respectively. It was concluded that one stage direct flotation is unavoidable to achieve a product with low SiO2 content.

Maintaining smooth haulage roads is a key to significant cost savings at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Bing- ham Canyon copper mine, located near Salt Lake City, Utah. The truck operations section of the mine moves an estimated 300,000 tpd of waste plus some ore to maintain a balanced production cycle. A three-year truck replacement program has produced a dramatic new look in both size and capacity of the truck fleet. Currently there are 95 haulage trucks in the Bingham fleet with capacities up to 150 t. The trend towards the larger haulage units places greater importance on overall truck availability. The impact of a 150-t truck being out of service is far more critical than with the former 65 or 85-t units.

As it is my opinion that deep alluvial mining in Victoria and in the Murray Flats in New South Wales is practically in its infancy, and considering that we, the old school of alluvial miners, who have thirty or forty years' experience to guide us, must in the natural order of things hand over the management of our mine, to the younger and less experienced' generation of miners, I thought that as our Association has been formed for the purpose of disseminating information and the exchange of ideas, a few notes on the practical working of alluvial mines might be of some service to aspirants for the position of mining manager.The greatest difficulty the alluvial miner has to contend against is the immense quantity of water contained in the drifts overlying the wash in the gutters or ancient river beds, and to cope with this water successfully and economically is the point to be aimed at by our mining managers; and if they thoroughly understand this part of their business in all its details, they will not only win kudos for themselves, but will be the means of saving large sums of money to the companies they represent, and, in many instances, will make a success of a venture which otherwise might be stopped for want of funds before it is properly proved. At the present time, although we have had over forty years' experience indraining the deep leads of the colony, I regret to say that a large amount of ignorance still prevails amongst both directors and managers.

Traditionally, many of the advances in casting technology have been made by expensive and time consuming trial-and-error methodology. Modeling of the complex solidification process promises production of castings which are made "right the first time." Even though several models are available for simulation of conventional casting processes, none of them address this relatively new technology of investment cast titanium aluminides. In this paper, modification and application of a transient, three-dimensional, fully coupled fluid flow and heat transfer solidification modeling computer program to the analysis of centrifugally cast titanium aluminides is discussed. The predictive results of the program are compared to qualities of actual cast parts for validation.

Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people's awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

"The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Gas Association investigating the relation of properties of gas oils to the gum-forming properties of carbureted water gas. The present report deals with the effects of operating practice on the composition of the light oils from carbureted water gas. A general outline of the gummy meter problem has been presented in a previous paper.*Carbureted water gas is a mixture roughly of 80 per cent water gas by volume and 20 per cent oil gas. The latter, though small in relative volume, supplies more than half of the heating value of the gas under the present-day standard. Therefore, it is logical that the oil used in the carbureting process and the operating practices involved should be subjected to scientific study. Many investigations***** bearing on the aspects considered in this paper have been carried out in the past."

In a recent research effort, a laminated overburden loading model (as implemented in LaModel3.0 was compared with the results of ARMPS 2010, and the laminated overburden model was found to more accurately classify a ARMPS database of 52 deep cover case histories by a factor of 60% versus 54%. However, the LaModel analysis of each case study required several days to complete, as compared to a requirement of only several minutes for each ARMPS analysis. In the research presented in this paper, a computer code (ARMPS-LAM) has been developed to effectively implement the laminated overburden model into the ARMPS program. This program takes the basic ARMPS geometric input for defining the mining plan and loading condition and then automatically develops, runs, and analyzes a full LaModel analysis of the mining geometry to output the stability factor on the Active Mining Zone(AMZ), all without further user input. The present laboratory version of ARMPS-LAM can be run in batch mode; therefore, the ARMPS 2010 database of 645case histories can be analyzed very quickly. In an initial logistic regression analysis of this database, the ARMPS-LAM program was seen to be slightly more accurate than ARMPS 2010 by a factor of 71% versus 63%.
