The support of underground openings by water is a natural phenomenon. Surface sinkholes, such as those that occur with some frequency in Florida, are attributed to a lowering of the water table resulting in the draining of existing limestone cavities. This withdraw the natural support and causes the surface subsidence. The role of water as a ground support medium was demonstrated in a mining situation during Bureau of Mines research on borehole mining of phosphate in St. Johns County, Florida. The borehole mining tool (BHT) incorporates a water jet nozzle and slurry eduotor in a single down- hole tool. The tool is lowered through a bore- hole into the ore zone, and an underground cavity is eroded by the motion of the water jet with the slurry simultaneously pumped to the surface. In addition to phosphate, the system has been successfully used in coal, oil sands, and uranium. The Florida phosphate ore is located at a depth of approximately 250 ft in strata that produce high water inflows. These factors preclude extraction by conventional methods, either surface or underground, but they present an ideal setting for borehole mining. Previous borehole mining research had led the researchers to believe that the system would only be effective in a void cavity, that is, a cavity where the water level is maintained below the water jet nozzle, so that the water does not impede the action of the let. It was soon discovered, however, that the void cavity presented ground control problems. The overlying strata started to cave soon after the support provided by the water was removed. This was an unacceptable situation as it adulterated the ore and threatened surface subsidence. Further tests wherein the size of the cavity -as reduced by cutting only a 30° arc also resulted in caving. A new concept, air shielding, was then introduced and tested. With this system, the water jet cutter was surrounded with a shroud of compressed air, thereby gaining the advantages of cutting in air while retaining the roof support afforded by a water-filled cavity. This arrangement proved to be highly successful. The air-shrouded jet was able to cut a cavity radius of about 18 ft, and the system production was 35 tph, which compared favorably to the production previously attained in void cavities. The borehole phosphate experience proves the efficacy of remote mining in a water filled opening. This system neutralises the hazards of heavy ground, and may, as in the case of the phosphate deposits, be the only viable alternative. It opens up the possibility of application in a wide range of deposits not only those amenable to hydraulic mining. Remote mechanical System might be developed using present robotics technology and then operated in water-filled openings.

The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

Corrosion is an electrochemical process that causes degradation and deterioration of various steel works (pipelines, drains, cisterns) whether they are buried, immersed, or not. Worldwide, we estimate that corrosion destroys a quarter of the annual production of steel at a rate of 5 tons per second. Several techniques are used to protect against corrosion. Among these processes, Cathodic protection, which is regarded as the best technique to assure the protection of steel, works against this phenomenon. This is achieved either by a system of reactive anodes, or by the technique of impressed current protection or other techniques. Before any installation of cathodic protection, a preliminary study and pre-evaluation of certain parameters must be made. In the present work, we will present an example of dimensioning of an installation of cathodic protection by imposed current of a pipeline using solar energy, where we discuss the following items: ? Evolutions of the potential as well as current along the pipeline and their respective expressions deduced from the laws known as telegraphists; ? Range of protection (potential of protection along the pipeline); ? (This paper reviews the reasons for and the principles followed in designing and constructing complete new surface works at the mine of the Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, New South Wales, and describes the layout, plant, buildings and services.)The Zinc Corporation mine produces high grade lead, silver and zinc sulphide ore. Lead and zinc concentrates are sent by rail to Port Pirie, where the lead is smelted and the zinc concentrate is shipped to Tasmania, England and other overseas countries.Some time ago consideration was given to the advisability of sinking an additional shaft. For some years the old main shaft had been working at full capacity and developments underground had indicated that the mine would eventually be capable of an output greater than that which could be handled through the shaft. It was therefore decided to sink a new main shaft and the site chosen was in footwall country 900 feet south of the old main shaft. The reason for the move south was so that the new shaft would be opposite the centre of gravity of the ore-bodies at depth. The size of the new shaft is 27 ft. ,6 in. x 15 ft., and the work was put in hand early in 1936.It was intended to haul the whole mine output through this shaft, which was 1,600 feet from the mill then operating. An extensive conveyor system thus became necessary unless a new mill was built near the shaft. Mining companies are usually held responsible for accidents occurring to the public around their operations . Safeguards are provided by progressive mining companies to prevent the public from getting into danger from wandering unattended about the properties . At abandoned operations , where little or no supervision can be maintained , persons are often injured through the negligence of the operator in leaving the property in unsafe condition . After a mine is abandoned or a lease is given up by a mining company , the responsibility for the safety of the property rests sometimes with the State to which the property ownership reverts or with the owner of the land ; either is usually quite unwilling to spend any money to remedy unsafe conditions due to the carelessness of the mining company . The land owner or the State , or both , should see that the work of leaving safe conditions behind is done by the operator before he abandons the mine or gives up the lease . Some of the worst hazards to the public at abandoned mines are from old test pits , abandoned shafts or tunnels , open pits , caved ground , and bodies of water in abandoned open pits . Hazards exist from some of these sources during the active operation of a mining property as well . In the early stages of mining operations test shafts are often sunk from 50 to 100 feet deep through the more or less loose material overlying bed rock . When these shafts are left unprotected , they are a serious danger for many years to come . In the course of time they become largely concealed by brush and grass , and thus are a deadfall to anyone who might happen to step into them . This condition will hold true for any part of the country, but to a much less degree where it is not necessary to sink through a great amount of cover . Many progressive operating companies have adopted the practice of filling in test pits after securing the information desired . Some nonresident landowners and exploration companies , however , have left such pits open , and it is extremely difficult for the mine inspector to get into communication with the owner . The diffusion coefficients of zinc in single-crystal zinc and carbon in single-crystal and poly crystalline nickel were measured by means of radioactive tracer techniques both with and without the application of ultrasonic vibrations under conditions such that the temperature of the sample was closely controlled. The results of this investigation indicate no enhancement of diffusion in any of the samples. It is suggested that previously reported enhancement may have been due either solely to temperature increases caused by ultrasonic vibrations or in combination with changes in the boundary conditions. A number of observations have been reported in the literature in which it has been implied or inferred that the application of ultrasonics enhances diffusion (see, for example, Refs. 1-5). The present study was undertaken in an attempt to observe this effect under carefully controlled conditions, particularly with regard to measurement and control of the temperature of the sample. Two different types of systems were studied; these were the self-diffusion of zinc and the diffusion of carbon in nickel. EXPERIMENTAL For diffusion with ultrasonic energy applied, the samples were included as part of a resonant ultrasonic system operating at 58.5 kcps. The ultrasonic generators used were rated at 100 and 250 w and could be tuned over a frequency from 10 to 100 kc. A PZT (lead titanate/lead zirconate) ceramic transducer provided the driving vibration. This system requires no metallurgical joining of the specimen to the acoustical transmission line since the ultrasonic driver and the follow-up section clamp the specimen in position by means of a constant pressure of 50 lb developed by an air cylinder. The ultrasonic driver and follow-up section, both made of titanium, were 4 in. in length from clamping point to the end in contact with the specimen. Using the relationship given by Mason,6 A = V/f, the resonant wavelength, A, in titanium is calculated to be 3.3 in. at a frequency, f, of 58.5 kc, taking the velocity of sound in titanium, V, as 1.95 X 105 in. per sec. The 4-in. driver and follow-up section, therefore, are each 4.0/3.3 =1.21 times the resonant wavelength. Clamping pressure must be applied at stress nodes of the transmission line in order to preserve resonance. Therefore, a specimen length of 0.58 times the wavelength in the specimen was required to place the clamping pressure application points at stress nodes exactly three wavelengths apart. A stress antinode was contained in the center 3 in. of the specimen. A small PZT ceramic disc attached to the follow-up section provided an output voltage proportional to the intensity of the standing wave. This output voltage was monitored on an oscilloscope and the ultrasonic system was tuned to resonance by varying the frequency until the output signal was a maximum amplitude. The amplitude of the output signal was maintained constant throughout the diffusion anneal. A split cylindrical stainless-steel chamber, which was purged with argon prior to and during the runs, was placed around the specimen. The chamber in turn was surrounded by a movable furnace whose temperature could be controlled to 7C. Heat exchangers were used to cool the driver, follow-up section, and ultrasonic transducer. Great care was taken to obtain the true specimen temperature in all cases. Several different methods were tried; the most successful was that in which the thermocouple was held in contact with the midlength of the specimen by means of an asbestos insulating pad and wire straps. In the case of zinc, single-crystal specimens of 99.999 pct purity were used. The samples were 0.25 by 0.25 in. square and of the proper length for resonance, that is 1.1 in. long with the c axis parallel to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion perpendicular to the c axis and ultrasonic motion parallel to the c axis, and 1.9 in. long with the c axis perpendicular to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion parallel to the c axis and ultrasonic motion perpendicular to the c axis. In each case, one of the rectangular faces was electroplated with a thin film of zinc containing Zn The constant pressure used to clamp the specimen in place in the ultrasonic system caused some deformation in some of the samples. For these samples the deformation was concentrated in either end of the specimen; thus, for all samples (both zinc and nickel) the center in. was cut from the specimen after the diffusion anneal to be used for sectioning and counting. The nickel single-crystal samples, of 99.999 pct purity, were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.187 by 2.07 in. long with the (100) direction parallel to the rod axis. The polycrystalline nickel samples of 99.97 pct purity had an average grain diameter of 0.007 in. and were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.125 by 1.87 in. long. The direction of ultrasonic motion was parallel to (100) direction (bar axis) for the single-cqstal samples and parallel to the bar axis for the polycrystalline specimens. A thin film of c14 suspended in methanol was applied to the diffusing face of the specimen. Two specimens were butted together lengthwise for each diffusion anneal to minimize oxidation. After diffusion, a precision lapping device similar to the one described by Goldstein7 and a radiation detector were used to obtain a plot of specific activity vs penetration distance for each specimen. The solubilities of oxygen in liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd alloys have been determined in the range of 940° to 1200°C at 1 atm pressure of oxygen using an improved Sieverts technique. The additions of gold (0 to 57 pct), platinum (0 to 27 pct), and palladium (0 to 22 pct) to liquid silver continuously decrease the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. Activity coefficients and interaction coefficients of oxygen in these alloys and have been calculated. The interaction coefficientscan be described by the following equations: Approximate second-order interaction coefficients (pM have been calculated. The contribution of the product, pMxNM, to In yo only becomes significant at high alloy concentrations. RECENTLY several investigators1"3 have redeter-mined the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. In general the recent findings1" for Po, = 1 atm are in good agreement with the equation:4 log %O = 695.4/T + 1.086 [1] It is established1, 2 that the solubility of oxygen follows Sieverts' law reasonably well, at least up to 1 atm partial pressure of oxygen. It should be noted that a very slight deviation from Sieverts' law has been reported by Lupis and Elliott.3 Only recently has the solubility of oxygen in Ag-X binary liquid systems received much attention, and only the Ag-Cu, Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd systems have been studied. Par lee, Sacris, and zoellners reported that the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver increases progressively with the small additions of copper (0 to 0.5 pct) up to the point where the copper oxide phase appears. Lupis and ~lliott~ have reported that the solubilities of oxygen in liquid silver decrease progressively with the additions of gold, platinum, and palladium. However, their investigation was limited to 0 to 5 pct of these alloying elements, a range too limited to satisfy the requirements of the research program of this laboratory, where the solubilities of oxygen in the range of 0 to 30 pct were required for the calculation of chemical diffusion coefficients of oxygen in these alloys. The present paper deals only with the solubilities of oxygen in these alloys while another paper will deal with the diffusion of oxygen in these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A Sieverts technique was employed which involved an improved design of the reaction tube, Fig. 1, as described briefly in a previous communication.4 Liquid melts (70 to 100 g) were held in Norton Alun-dum crucibles. The induction furnace used had a maximum output of 2.5 kw with very fine control. This induction system had excellent stability and the final equilibrium temperatures measured by calibrated Pt-Pt, 10 pct Rh thermocouples are believed to be within ±2C. These thermocouples were checked against the melting point of pure gold wire, and the results agreed with standard tables (±l°C). Each run involved a careful sequence of operations. The sample was heated to and held at about 900°C in vacuum for 3 to 4 hr with the thermocouple in a retracted position. After melting, the melts were usually exposed to a small amount of oxygen (0.5 to 2.0 cu cm) and then degassed slowly for 1 to 2 min to remove any oxidizable volatile impurities such as carbon and sulfur as CO, CO2, SO2, and SO forth. "Since it was first identified in 1817, selenium has received considerable interest. Native selenium and a few selenium minerals were discovered several decades later. With the increasing number of selenium minerals, the occurrence of selenium minerals became the focus of much research. A great number of selenium deposits were reported all over the world, although few independent selenium deposits were discovered. Selenium is obtained mainly as a byproduct of other metals, and is produced primarily from the anode mud of copper refineries. This paper presents a comprehensive review of selenium minerals, as well as the treatment of copper refinery anode slimes for the recovery of selenium. Our focus is on the selenium minerals, including their discovery and occurrence, and the distribution of selenium resources. In addition, the main methods of recovering selenium from copper anode slimes are summarized. IntroductionSelenium (Se) was first observed in 1817 in a laboratory (Greenwood et al., 1984). The discovery of selenium was made by the Swedish chemist J.J. Berzelius and J.G. Gahn, who isolated selenium from a red residue in sulphuric acid from pyrite mined at Fahlun, Sweden. Selenium was named from the Greek word selene (moon), since it resembled tellurium, which had been discovered a few years earlier and named from the Latin word tellus (Earth).After the first observation of selenium in the laboratory, selenium received considerable interest. In 1954, E.P. Kaiser pointed out that Se is enriched in sulphide ores and often associated with Bi, Co, Sn etc. (Kaiser 1954). In 1959, Hawley and Nichol investigated selenium in Canadian sulphide minerals, and presented the content of selenium in sulphide from several deposits of different types. They also proposed that Se is enriched in lowtemperature hydrothermal pyrite (Hawley and Nichol, 1959). The thermodynamic conditions for forming native selenium and selenium minerals in sedimentary rocks were discussed, as well as geochemical behaviour of selenium near the oxidation zones of sulphides in the 1970s (Howard III, 1977; Zhu et al., 2003). Zhu et al. examined the morphology, features, and genesis of native selenium from Yutangba, Enshi City, Hubei Province, China in 2004, and pointed out, from the different forms of native Se, that selenium can be activated,transformed, remobilized, and enriched at sites such as in the unsaturated subsurface zone or in the saturated zone (Zhu et al., 2005). The transport and deposition of selenium in felsic volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits of the Yukon Territory, Canada was studied and reported by Layton- Matthews et al. (2005)."

Macroscopic characteristics of a complicated mine ventilation is remarked to build an expert system for mine safety in the Taiheiyo coal mine, Hokkaido, Japan. To gain the characteristics a large number of simulation were performed with varying aerodynamic resistance of the branches with regulator in mine ventilation network. The principal results of the study are as follows, (1) Pressure loss diagram for ventilation network with main and auxiliary fans enables capability of air circulation in the network. (2) H-Q (pressure-quantity) diagram gives capacity of air quantity In a network with main and auxiliary fans. (3) When airflow rate, [] through branch qi is changed by opening/closing regulator set in the branch, air flow rate, [], through branch p can be represented by the empirical formula. [ ] where Api and Qp,o are the constant coefficients. (4) Macroscopic characteristics mentioned above are available to make rules in an expert system for escaping route at emergency.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated CaF2-assisted H2SO4 leaching to extract Mn from domestic silicate manganese resources. A pyroxmangite ((Mn,Fe)Sio3) ore containing, in pct, 34 Mn, 23 Si, 3 Ca, and 1 Fe was leached at 90° C for 3 h in a solution containing, in g/L, 12 Mn, 140 H2SO4, 130 (NH4)2SO4, and 5 CaFz. Manganese extraction of 92 pct was achieved. Manganese of greater than 99 pct purity was prepared by electrolyzing the purified pregnant solution at a current density of 50 mA/cm2. The current efficiency was 65 pct.

Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.

"MASSIVE sulphide deposits are found in two areas of New Brunswick, the St. Stephen area and the Bathurst-Newcastle area. In both, the geology in the immediate vicinity of the sulphide bodies is largely inferred from drilling results as outcrop is not plentiful and is, in fact, almost lacking in most places. With few exceptions these deposits have not been explored by underground methods. Consequently much of the. detail on the geology will only become known over a period of years as economic conditions make mining feasible.Much of the information contained in this paper has been supplied directly by company geologists. As a result of the number of contributors, some confusion of nomenclature bas to be anticipated. The presence of hard roof poses a significant threat to the safety of underground coal mining. In this study, a mechanical model is established for underground stopes to analyze the overburden structure with the advancing of the mining face. It is indicated that the load-bearing arch structure (LBAS) is formed above the stope for roofs with regular hardness, whereas the reversed-basin bearing structure (RBBS) is formed for hard roofs. Compared with the LBAS, the RBBS can induce an additional pressure at the foot of the bearing structure, and this effect becomes less as the distance between the hard roof and stope increases. The ultra-deep borehole hydro-fracturing technique (UHT) is proposed to weaken the hard roof for pressure release, and the associated equipment and procedures are also presented. The UHT is based on horizontal drilling along the axial direction of the roadway in the roof, and then the receding segmented hydraulic fracturing technique is used to achieve the purpose of fracturing (weakening) of the surrounding rocks. Field tests are carried out in 3022 roadway of Daliangwan coal mine in Yulin to assess the developed technique, equipment, and fracturing procedures. To evaluate the fracturing effect, deep borehole stress-meters are installed at different depths of the fractured and un-fractured zones of the roadway, along with hydraulic support pressure sensors placed at the mining face. The results show that compared with the un-fractured zone, the pressure on the wall and pillar sides is lower than that in the fractured zone, and the associated weighting duration and weighting area ratio of the fractured are reduced by 53.23% and 33.59%, respectively. This indicates that the presented UHT can provide a new solution for the prevention and control of mining disasters induced by hard roof failures in underground coal mining.

Research undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in 1938 has resulted in the development of titanium from a laboratory curiosity to a commercial metal. Along with processes for producing the metal, it was necessary for the Bureau to develop methods for analyzing the metal, raw materials, and intermediate products. Some of the methods developed have been published.3 4 5/ General Services Administration (GSA) was responsible for purchasing titanium metal under Defense Production Act contracts with commercial producers. GSA designated the Federal Bureau of Mines to analyze this metal and establish its compliance with Government specifications. A substantial quantity of tin was found in some of the samples analyzed, and in July 1957 tin was added to the list of impurity elements to be determined. The specifications limited the amount of tin in titanium sponge to a maximum of 0.10 percent. A program was immediately initiated to investigate methods and techniques for determining tin in the range of 0 to 1.0 percent. A method accurate at the 0.10 percent level was necessary, as this level was the critical range for acceptance or rejection of the metal.

PREVIOUS investigations have shown that lithium is body-centered cubic from near its melting point to the temperature of liquid air1,2,3 Nevertheless there was an incentive to search again for a transformation at low temperatures: C. Zener4,5 has remarked that the low value of the elastic modulus (11 - C12)/2 of body-centered cubic metals and alloys implies a rapid increase in free energy with decreasing temperature, which would favor the occurrence of a transformation; also the shear movement to which this modulus applies is one that can transform a body-centered cubic structure into a slightly distorted face-centered cubic structure. It was confirmed that lithium does not transform spontaneously at liquid nitrogen temperature, but it was found that a transformation can be induced at this temperature by cold working the metal,6 and at slightly lower temperatures a different transformation occurs spontaneously. Transformations were also found in solid solutions of magnesium in lithium. THE NATURE OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS Before presenting a detailed treatment of the technique used and the specific data obtained, it would be well to give a brief survey of the general characteristics of the transformations. A new crystal structure begins to form spontaneously in a specimen when it is cooled below a critical temperature. In lithium the structure appears to be close-packed hexagonal; in the Li-Mg alloys most of the diffraction lines (but not all) are near those for hexagonal lithium. The transformation proceeds as the temperature is lowered and soon stops if the temperature is held constant or raised. The course of the transformation on cooling is indicated by the curve at the lower left of Fig I. This curve is drawn in stepped fashion because the transformation goes by discrete steps with audible clicks. Because of the similarity to the decomposition of austenite into martensite in steels, it seems appropriate to designate the beginning of the spontaneous transformation on cooling as the Ms point. On heating to room temperature after the low temperature treatment only the usual BCC structure is found. On heating, the low temperature modification begins to disappear at a temperature which will be designated as Ac. The transformation on heating is halted when the rise in temperature is halted. The temperature must be raised 40 to 50°C above Ac before the reversion is complete-an interval which is sensitive to the rate of heating and to the time of holding at temperatures above Ac. This behavior on heating thus has similarities also to the formation of martensite in the cooling of steels.

The most widely used methods of predicting the volumetric properties of gas are based on the principle of corresponding states, which asserts that the compressibility factor is a universal function of reduced temperature and pressure. Previous studies have shown that the acentric factor, as proposed by Pitzer, l is an important addition to reduced pressure and reduced temperature as factors affecting the compressibility factor. Results of this study indicate that, if the pseudocritical temperature and pressure used to determine the reduced conditions are adequately predicted, characterization of natural gas-carbon dioxide mixtures with the acentric factor will allow reliable determination of the compressibility factor. Comparisons of predicted and experimental compressibility factors have shown that the pseudo-critical constant rules of Stewart, Burkhardt and Voo 2 are satisfactory for hydrocarbon mixtures. However, these rules fail to predict the pseduo-critical constants for hydrocarbon-carbon dioxide mixtures. Based on graphically determined pseudocritical temperatures for binary hydrocarbon-carbon dioxide mixtures, a correlation which gives the required correction to the Stewart, Burkhardt and Voo rules was prepared and a compressibility factor prediction technique was proposed. To test the proposed technique, compressibility factors for live mixtures of methane, carbon dioxide and either ethne or propane were experimentally determined at 100, 130 and 160F and pressures up to 7,026 psia. The predicted and experimental compressibility factors for these live mixtures had an average absolute deviation of 0.55 percent. INTRODUCTION Two-parameter generalized correlations based on the principle of corresponding states (PCS) are presently available for reliably predicting the compressibility factor of lean natural gas, i.e., natural gas with low concentrations of hydrocarbons heavier than methane. When these same correlations are used for mixtures of natural gas and carbon dioxide, large deviations between actual and predicted compressibility factors are observed. This study was undertaken to provide a means for accurately predicting the compressibility factor for such mixtures. In the past, two avenues of approach have been employed to extend the applicability of the PCS. The first has been to introduce additional parameters. The second has been to develop combination rules for predicting pseudocritical constants which do not suffer from the limitations of the commonly used molal average constants. In this study, both of these approaches have been considered and employed to arrive at a method for predicting the compressibility factor of mixtures of hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide. SELECTION OF A THIRD PARAMETER Failure of the original PCS to predict the compressibility factor for all pure gases, regardless of their mass, shape or polar moment, has led to the introduction of additional parameters into the PCS. Parameters have been introduced to correct for quantum deviations,3-5 non-spherical or globular shapes6-9 and for polar moments.8-12 In addition to these parameters which are based on some microscopic property and intended to correct for some specific cause of deviation, more general parameters based on some bulk property have also been introduced.1913-16 To use additional parameters to correct for each of the possible causes of deviation among the individual constituents of a gas mixture would require a rather complex form of the PCS. To maintain the PCS in as simple a form as possible, it is more desirable to have a single third parameter which is based on some bulk property influenced by several of the factors causing deviations. The third parameter selected for use in this study is a factor originally proposed by Pitzer.9

Dynamic pile testing is now over 20 years old as a routinely applied tool for evaluating driven pile installation. The first test on a cast-in-place pile was performed more that 15 years ago. The research that produced the method began almost 30 years ago. But, questions still arise regarding the appropriate use of this technique so some review is useful. Today a number of methods including dynamic testing all depending in some way on the application of dynamics are in routine use. First, Wave Equation analysis can be used to predict pile driveability before going to the field. The same approach can be used during driving to estimate the bearing capacity based on the blow count observed in the field. Dynamic measurements, on the other hand, can only be used after pile driving has begun. They offer predictions of pile capacity as well as measurements of hammer, driving system, and pile driving performance characteristics. The first part of this paper will be devoted to discussing how the foundation engineer can use these tools. First, a brief review of what dynamic methods actually do. In Wave Equation analysis a numerical model of the hammer, driving system, pile, and the soil is created by the engineer. The hammer is dropped on the pile and using a discrete, dynamic analysis the motion of the individual pile elements is calculated as a function of time. Of course, input information must be supplied by the program user to describe the hammer, driving system, pile, and soil. In the current state of development, the primary problem in input data is with the hammer performance (efficiency) and the soil description. Research may be able to do a better job with the soil data, but hammer performance will always vary from hammer to hammer and is dependent on the affectiveness of the inspection process. Prior to beginning pile driving the Wave Equation analysis supplies the best available estimate of what will happen when driving begins. It gives an estimate of blow count during driving, driving stresses, both tension and compression in the pile, and for diesel hammers, stroke. The selection of the driving system can be checked with the results of Wave Equation analysis and modifications can be made if required. For example, if the blow count at the required capacity was deemed excessive by the contractor a larger hammer could be tried or if driving stresses were too high changes could be made in the cushion or the hammer selection could be modified. All of these modifications are possible with only the cost of a computer run. The primary questions regarding the accuracy and reliability of Wave Equation analysis at this time is with regard to the assumptions made to represent the soil characteristics and the difficulty in predicting hammer performance.
