Discussion of the paper of J. PARSE CHANNING, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 99, March, 1915, pp. 529 to 538. FRED H. RINDGE, JR., * New York, N. Y.-It is interesting to note that although this movement was started only seven years ago at Yale, it has spread in that brief time to 200 colleges and technical schools, anti thousands of men are interested in it. There are 3,000 graduates who became acquainted with the movement in college days anti are now promoting the industrial betterment idea all over the country. Some of these men are employed entirely in this work, and the number of such workers is constantly increasing. We feel we are really doing a very fundamental thing in getting so many coming engineers and prospective employers of labor to interest themselves in these things which we have been discussing this morning; these things which are so vital to efficiency and success in any line of business or engineering to-clay. Of course the institutions located in our large industrial centers have the greatest opportunity for practical service. But I have just returned from one college, Pennsylvania State College, where 300 engineering students in three clays signed up as interested in this movement and as anxious to take active part in the work this summer. That is one of a number of colleges situated in towns where there are 110 industrial opportunities. Therefore, their field of service must be where they work

"The increasing demand for small deformations and high-capacity drilled shafts without enlarging drilledshaft diameters has motivated the development and increasing use of a base grouting (BG) technique. This technique has been demonstrated to improve drilled-shaft capacity, especially for shafts tipped into loose cohesionless soils. Nevertheless, there remains considerable uncertainty in predicting the performance of base-grouted shafts, particularly for shafts tipped into cohesive soils. To date, there are only two documented design methods for estimating the axial geotechnical resistance of base-grouted shafts: Tip Capacity Multiplier (TCM) and Axial Capacity Multiplier (ACM) methods. A comprehensive test program was carried out during the design phase of the Wisconsin Zoo Interchange project to help optimize the flyover ramp’s foundation design. The test program included installing and testing one base grouted shaft and one ungrouted shaft at two sites with different ground conditions. Based on test results, it was concluded that prediction of the TCM method is well correlated with the measured values for both cohesive and granular soils; however, both methods tend to underestimate the axial resistance. Results also highlighted the importance of the base-grouting criteria in taking full advantage of the base grouting.INTRODUCTIONBase-grouted drilled shafts (BGDS), also known as post-grouted drilled shafts, consist of conventionally installed drilled shafts that contain access grout tubes placed within the shaft during construction. After installing the drilled shaft and achieving the pre-established concrete strength, grout is injected at the shaft tip through the access grout tubes to improve soil behavior around the drilled-shaft base. The tip grout injection improves the overall shaft capacity and reduces settlement through Densifying the in situ soils, compressing any debris left by the drilling process, preloading the soil beneath the tip to mobilize the shaft base resistance within service limits, increasing the tip area, and increasing the side resistance in the lower portion of the shaft."

The fatigue strength, fatigue hardening, and effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent age hardening of supersaturated Al(Cu) solid solutions have been determined as functions of alloy composition and temperature. The fatigue strength/tensile strength ratios, determined at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, decreased with increase in alloy content for all temperatures, but the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at -195°C decreased much more rapidly than did the ratios for 150" and 25°C. This suggested that strain aging and/or age hardening occurred during tests at higher temperatures. Additionally, the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at 150°C exceeded those at 25°C for all compositions, indicating greater strengthening during fatigue at 150°C. The effect of fatigue or tensile deformation at 150°, 25°, and -195°C on subsequent age hardening showed that the deformatzon increased the rate of precipitation and indicated that mechanically produced vacancies were probably formed during deformation. Fatigue hardening was studied at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, and the effect of room-temperature rests after 10 and 100 cycles was examined. The results confirmed that strain aging occurred at the higher temperatures . DURING the last 15 years various mechanisms of fatigue crack nucleation and growth based on dislocation and vacancy interactions, operating singly or collectively, have been proposed. The probable consensus of present opinion is that the fatigue process in pure metals essentially involves dislocation interactions, and that vacancies formed by such interactions play a minor or inconsequential role. However, there is some evidence that age-hardened alloys tend to overage during fatigue, probably by local vacancy-enhanced diffusion, and strain aging also might be important in selected cases. Furthermore, it has been established that the behavior of quenched-in vacancies in Al(Cu) and other solid solutions is composition-sensitive. Therefore, it seemed worthwhile to investigate various aspects of the fatigue behavior of supersaturated Al(Cu) alloys and to examine the results in terms of vacancy-enhanced effects. EXPERIMENTAL The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from 99.994 wt pet A1 and OFHC copper, the latter containing 0.04 pet 0 as the principal impurity. Six alloys were made, containing, by actual analysis, 0.58, 0.96, 1.96, 2.85, 4.45, and 5.51 wt pet Cu. They were induction-melted in air in graphite crucibles, cast as 7-in. by 7/8-in.-diam rods in graphite molds, and hot-rolled to 5/8 in. diam. The experimental work was a three-part program involving the determination of a) 10' cycle fatigue stresses as a function of alloy composition and temperature; b) the effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent aging of the supersaturated alloys; and c) fatigue hardening as a function of alloy composition and temperature. For determining the 105 cycle fatigue stresses, a portion of the 5/8-in. stock was machined into Krouse rotating cantilever beam fatigue specimens, 2 in. in length by 1/4 in. minimum diameter. These were tested at +150°, 25°, and -195°C (liquid nitrogen) on a Krouse high-speed machine, with special weights to provide lower -than-normal loading ranges, this being necessitated by the small load requirements of those alloys of lower copper content. For the high-temperature tests a small resistance heater was designed to clear the collets and fit in between the chucks, while for the low-temperature tests a hollow nylon cylinder was used, having closed ends drilled to pass a fatigue specimen, and positioned similarly to the heater. A plexiglass container completely enclosed the fatigue machine; rubber gloves fixed to ports in the walls enabled the machine to be operated from outside the box. A tray of magnesium perchlorate dried the air in the container and prevented both atmospheric corrosion fatigue at room and elevated temperatures and troublesome ice build-up at low temperatures. A total of ten to fifteen specimens was used for each combination of alloy composition and temperature. The result of each test was plotted on a standard S-N diagram, and the next stress was selected on the basis of the trends indicated by previous specimens. In this manner a small portion of the S-N diagram was constructed, and the 105 cycle fatigue stress obtained. IN 1943, we found, in the new Mather operation, a very unusual and disappointing condition in the footwall rock where all of our main haulageways were to be located. With the exception of a few hundred feet out of the thousands then planned and since driven, all of the openings require support. In general, the ground is not particularly heavy, at least by our standards, but it must be supported and the back carefully covered. Also, our operations require rather wide plat openings (16 to 18 ft) and rather flat curves at the turn-outs, all of which adds to the problem. When this completely unforeseen condition was discovered, ordinary timbering was the only answer, because of the impossibility of obtaining adequate steel supplies in time due to war shortages. Then by the time steel supplies were obtained and a practice developed, we found ourselves with between four and five miles of main haulage drifts and plat openings of a permanent nature, all of which were supported by hardwood timber, some of which had already rotted to an unsafe degree. To give all of the details of our experiments, studies, and experiences would fill a large book, but we were satisfied that our organization had done an excellent job, starting from scratch. You can appreciate our surprise when we discovered that we had added very little to an existing record. Attention was called to a footnote in a copy of "Carnegie Pocket Companion" year 1923. The note read: "Full information as to uses of H-Beams is given in pamphlet entitled 'Steel Mine Timbers.' " A search of our Engineering Library brought to light a pamphlet printed in 1911 showing extensive use of steel for this purpose. Except for welding in place of riveting, we have added very little to the designs in that book. We have, however, developed an experience which proves, at least to our own satisfaction, that steel mine supports pay off under the proper conditions. We are now convinced, in spite of the relatively high initial cost of materials, that steel sets, because of comparatively low installation cost, are actually cheaper than either treated or untreated wood sets, if they are properly designed and adapted. Several Sections in Use: Convenience guided our first experiments in steel sets, since for a number of years, we had used the 4-in. WF, 10 lb per ft section in 10-ft lengths as safety forepoles along with wood forepoles. This section replaced the 40-lb rail which had formerly been used for the purpose. Having the 4-in. WF sections on hand, it was natural that our first experiments in steel sets involved their use. Later, the rolling of the 10-lb section was discontinued in favor of the much stronger 13-lb section, which is now standard for both legs and caps in areas of no particular weight, but which, none the less, require permanent support. Our experiments involved the use of the 10- and 13-lb sections as legs and 6- and 8-in. I beams, 16 and 23 lb per ft, respectively, as caps. Experience soon indicated that, if the ground were heavy enough, and the opening wide enough to require a cap stronger than 13-lb, the 8-in, 23-lb should be used, eliminating the 6-in. I beam. We now know that the 8-in. WF section of the same weight, which we propose to use in the future, is considerably stronger for the amount of money involved. Comparative Strengths: Tables I to IV giving strengths of several species of timbers as compared with the structural sections that we now use have been prepared in accordance with accepted practice. Experience indicates that failure due to compression perpendicular to the grain of the wood does not destroy the effectiveness of a wood set frequently enough to be a practical factor. Therefore, no table of these values is included.

A new sensor based sorting system has been developed, based on complex image analysis, where an image texture and a shape pattern is considered for identifying particles for separation. The sorting system employs different images generated by visual light and X-ray to provide maximal information about processed particles. Application of X-ray makes it possible to analyse the internal structure of the particles, which provides a 2D image with complicated texture, however, which contains valuable information. The advanced system for the texture and the pattern recognition is applied to analyse these images simultaneously, to provide the required identification of the particles for efficient separation. The mathematical models applied during identification and separation, are assisted by high speed calculations being specially optimised for this kind of process. This allows sorting with high capacity and high accuracy, which is critical for practical applications in mineral processing. The paper describes a number of tests during sorting of iron ore and coal with high separation efficiency.

Electrochemistry plays a significant role in minimizing wastes at East Penn's secondary lead smelter. East Penn has been recovering spent battery acid for reuse in new batteries since 1992. East Penn also produces a fertilizer feedstock from sulfur dioxide in the smelter stack gases. The success of these processes is, in large part, due to the installation of electrochemical cells. The cells in the acid recovery plant allow the waste from this process to be concentrated into less that 10% of the original spent acid. The cells in the fertilizer plant treat the solution to remove dissolved metals prior to sale to fertilizer manufacturers.

A complete list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1947, was published as Information Circular 7432.2/ A list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar years 1947, 1948, and 1949 was published as Information Circular 7569. The present list supplements Information Circulars 7432 and 7569 and includes all of 'the equipment approved during the calendar year 1950. Information Circular 7465, which included a list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1947 therefore is superseded.

A tecnologia da fabricação de aços, nas últimas décadas, apresentou grandes avanços, os quais resultaram em melhorias da qualidade, principalmente no que se refere à remoção de inclusões. As inclusões podem ser responsáveis por prejudicar as propriedades mecânicas por meio da geração de trincas ou fraturas entre outros defeitos. O distribuidor do lingotamento contínuo também pode atuar na remoção destas partículas. A eficácia desta função do distribuidor demanda o conhecimento das características do escoamento do aço líquido de modo que se possa propor modificações na configuração do distribuidor. Esse conhecimento pode ser obtido mediante a utilização de modelos físicos para simular os fenômenos envolvidos. O objetivo deste trabalho é, a partir de um distribuidor com jato aberto, construído em acrílico e em escala 1:1, verificar o percentual de inclusões passantes pelo veio com ou sem a presença de bolhas. O trabalho foi executado com e sem tubo longo, sendo o tubo longo empregado para prevenir o arraste de ar para o interior do modelo. Os resultados foram obtidos por meio do ensaio de remoção de inclusões com o auxílio do ensaio de distribuição de tempos de residência. As variáveis utilizadas neste estudo são: presença bolhas e velocidade de lingotamento.

A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No.4 mine which requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place, High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 it) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610 m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 30.5 cm (12 in) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas which endanger men and equipment. To control this situation rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works towards the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition utilizing a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDFI- 15 bolting machine. Over 120 km (75 mi) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43 to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam port- ions of No.4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method employing bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people and the total drilling supply costs are approximately 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of roof bolting machine operators and to prevent additional cases of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) thru the development of engineering noise controls. This paper describes and evaluates an engineering noise control for the roof bolting machine, namely the collapsible drill steel enclosure. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that using the collapsible drill steel enclosure provided a 7 dB(A) reduction in sound pressure level at the operator?s position of a roof bolting machine.

The key to disagreements between Blackburn's findings and mine is the word equilibrium". My work attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of the titanium-rich end of the Ti-A1 system. It can readily be shown that Blackburn's conclusions are based primarily on the examination of structures substantially removed from equilibrium. The diagram presented in Fig. 16 is properly labeled a "phase diagram". However, it appears that Blackburn either does not understand or does not accept the difference between "phase diagram" and "equilibrium diagram" as defined in the Metals Handbook.17 The conflict lies not in Blackburn's data but in his interpretation of it, and his use of "transformation", "phase diagram", and "equilibrium diagram" as synonymous terms. I share his view that the light microscope is much inferior to the transmission electron microscope for the study of transformations; but this fact does not render the light microscope useless or untrustworthy. The difficulties experienced with the Ti-A1 system have not been due to the limitations of the light microscope, but rather to the extreme sluggishness in achieving equilibrium at temperatures below 1000° C. Were it not for the light microscope employed with polarized light, the twin phase syndrome' might still be unrecognized and, as a consequence, still adding to the confusion of Ti-A1 investigations. (Ref. 1 should read ... Contract No. N161-25952 ... vol. 236.) Other, more sophisticated techniques, including electron transmission, simply confirm the erroneous tentative conclusions drawn from observations of structures due to the twin-phase syndrome. By the standards of most of the investigations of the Ti-A1 systems, seven of the fifteen compositions investigated by Blackburn were seriously contaminated with oxygen. The writer has found that 0.1 wt pct 0 shifts the a + Ti3A1 boundary to 1 at. pct lower A1 content at 700°C. At constant aluminum content, this corresponds to a temperature shift of the boundary of +25°c.18 Blackburn advises that the first group of alloys contained 0.1 to 0.15 wt pct 0, bur he does say whether the analyses were performed on as-received material or on specimens in their final state of heat treatment. This is especially important considering the 20-mil-thick starting materials. If specimens had been annealed in the two-phase a + 6 region it would have provided an indication of the final degree of oxygen contamination since up to about 12 at. pct A1 the boundaries of this region are well-defined for low-oxygen alloys. Blackburn questions the capability of light microscopy in determining phase boundaries in the Ti-A1 system. I submit that the a/a + Ti3A1 boundary in Fig. 1 of Ref. 1 over the composition range from 10 to 18 at. pct A1 was determined by dilatometry and supported by electron diffraction. Specimens of alloys containing 8, 10, 12, and 14 at. pct A1 were aged at 550°C for 1000 hr (under stress of 5000 psi to accelerate the tendency to equilibrium) and then fractured in tension at room temperature. Collodion was applied to the as-fractured (unetched) surface and, when stripped, carried away particles identified by electron diffraction as Ti3A1. Methane-air mixtures can ignite as a result of sparking or rubbing of materials, particularly by impact involving light alloys and rusted steel where an exothermic thermite reaction can occur. This report reviews the published literature and describes a new method utilized by the Bureau of Mines for studying the processes occurring during collisions of light metals with rusted steels. The method involves measuring the spectra of sparks and explosions in methane-air mixtures using a photodiode array. Initial results obtained using magnesium and aluminum alloy 6061-T651 projectiles striking rusted steel are reported. These results indicate that the continuous parts of the spectra show a larger intensity for incendive sparks compared with nonincendive sparks, with the largest relative change in the higher energy, ultraviolet region. An unexpected shift of the intensity maximum for the continuous parts of the spectra towards the infrared region was observed for the more incendive sparks. Evaluation of rusted steel samples with electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrography, and Auger electron spectroscopy after they had been impacted by aluminum alloys indicated that aluminum was transferred to the steel in the form of islands that became larger as a function of increasing projectile velocity.

In this study, 3.1 mm thick Ti-5553 (Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr) butt joints were autogenously welded using a 4 kW continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. The effect of welding speed and defocusing distance on the weld quality was investigated in terms of the surface morphology, welding defects, microstructure and hardness. Welds with full penetration were achieved at a defocusing distance ranging from -1 mm to 0 mm and welding speeds from 2.25 to 6.0 m/min. Underfill and porosity were the two main defects most frequently observed but within the optimum process window these defects could be maintained to meet aerospace specification tolerances. The fusion zone (FZ) consisted entirely of retained beta with a refined dendritic morphology. Compared to the bimodal alpha (a) + beta (ß) microstructure of the base metal (BM), the dissolution of the a phase was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ), which led to an 11 % decrease in hardness from the BM to the FZ. To determine the tensile properties of the welded samples, an automated 3D deformation measurement system was used to measure the local strain in the weld region. The yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased with increasing welding speed with a highest joint efficiency of 75 % being achieved, albeit with a concomitant reduction in the ductility.

Australia's iron ore industry is entering a challenging period with the development of new orebodies, the introduction of new products and the push for further downstream processing. In addition, the recent price reductions for iron ore exports have intensified the focus on reducing capital and operating costs. To assist in these areas, CSIRO is expanding its research capabilities, including the incorporation into CSIRO of the Mineral Processing Laboratories in Perth, which were previously managed by the WA Department of Minerals and Energy. In addition, a large part of the $24.4 million expansion of CSIRO's Pinjarra Hills laboratories in Brisbane will be devoted to enhancing iron ore processing research, providing purpose built laboratories and large process bays.

"Integrity tests refer to a variety of non-destructive tests (NDT) whose purpose is to measure or determine the quality and uniformity, and some- times dimensions, of cast-in-place concrete foundation elements. The tests are primarily aimed at detecting zones of poor quality concrete, voids, bulges, and/or necking.The non destructive integrity testing techniques in this section most generally used for drilled shaft testing are based on one of two physical principles - stress wave propagation or nuclear radiation. All of the stress wave methods involve monitoring a deliberately created vibration, usually of very low amplitude (strains on the order of ??). Some methods rely on direct transmission of the signal, while others rely on processing reflections of the imposed signal.The stress wave methods are inherently sensitive to vibrations from other sources, especially at frequencies that fall within the range of interest for the particular test being applied. Construction activity near the shaft being tested; such as: demolition jack-hammering, pile-driving, casing vibration, excavation and movement of track-vehicles are all known sources of interference that might render test data useless. The actual effect of such vibrations will vary with the type of activity, soil conditions and distance from the testing. The test operator must be able to recognize such interference, and the contractor should be prepared to cooperate with the testing personnel by stopping or moving the source of vibration. If this cannot be done immediately, testing should be postponed until the work in question is finished and the vibration source moved or shut down.NDT methods are not suitable substitutes for routine "topside" construction inspection as described in the Drilled Shaft Inspector’s Manual. However, these NDT methods do allow measurements of the quality of concrete placed in drilled shafts, which cannot be made from "topside" construction inspection. They should be considered supplemental to routine construction inspection as they do provide an additional level of quality control."

IN the course of an extensive investigation of the comparative properties of several types of copper, data were obtained on the cold working and subsequent recovery and recrystallization of the copper. In this paper, relations between the degree of cold work and the course of recrystallization are developed. In particular, it is shown that the course of recrystallization over long periods of time and at low temperatures can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from short-time high-temperature recrystallization data. MATERIALS USED IN THE INVESTIGATION Three types of copper were used in this investigation; these were tough pitch, OFHC, and OFHC copper with 15 oz per ton of silver added identified herein as Lots C, D, and F, respectively. The material was supplied by the American Metal Co. Ltd., and processed by the Rome Cable Co. The analyses of the three types of copper are given in Table 1. Originally, it started as wire bars 4 X 4 X 54 in. These bars were heated to 871°C in air and hot rolled to 3/8 in. rod. This rod was cold drawn to 0.204 in. rod (70 pct reduction) in three passes and annealed at 427°C for 4 hrs. A portion of the 3/8 in. rod was saved for more detailed cold-drawing experiments. Starting with the annealed 0.204 in. rod, hard-drawn wires were produced by cold drawing to 0.081 in. wire in 7 passes (84.4 pct reduction in area). Half-hard wires were made by cold drawing the 0.204 in. rod to 0.102 in. wire, (75 pct reduction) in 6 passes and annealing at 427°C for 4 hrs. This annealed wire was then drawn to 0.081 in. wire, (37.1 pct reduction) in 2 passes. Square rod was made by hot rolling wire bars to 9/16 in, rod in 8 passes. This rod was then cold drawn to 0.445 in.-diam rod and annealed for 3 1/2 hrs at 538°C. It was then cold drawn to 0.325 in. rod and again annealed at 538°C for 3 1/2 hrs. Hard square rods were then made by cold rolling this material to 0.257 X 0.257 in. rod, a reduction in area of 20.5 pct. Half-hard square rods were made by cold rolling to 0.268 X 0.268 in. square, annealing for 332 hrs at 538°C and cold rolling to 0.257 X 0.257 in., a reduction of 8.5 pct. Soft wire or rod was made from all types of copper by annealing the hard-drawn material at 343°C for 3 hrs in steam. The grain size of the annealed 0.081 in. wire varied slightly among the three lots: from 0.015-0.025 mm in the silver-bearing OFHC to 0.035-0.045 mm in the OFHC copper. The annealed 0.257 in. wires were more uniform in grain size, averaging about 0.035-0.045 mm. Representative structures are shown in Fig I. Many publications to date have advocated under- seas mining operations, optimistically overlooking the paucity of information on mineral distribution and the ocean environments in which minerals occur. Such articles (smattered with opinion, as is this article) are herein tempered by my more conservative views on the economics of mining under the seas. For purposes of this paper, underseas mining refers only to the deeper surficial deposits of the continental shelf and the deep sea floor, i.e., the deposits of phosphorite and manganese nodules.

Understanding relationships between mineralogy, texture, microstructural features, and element distribution and residence in minerals, is critical for accurate modeling of mineral weathering in waste-rock piles. The morphology of minerals and deformation structures, such as veins and faults, are important factors that control: (1) fluid access to the mineral surface to initiate dissolution, (2) the distribution of trace elements, and (3) formation of secondary minerals. We characterized the mineralogy, textures, and chemical properties of waste-rock material at three sites at scales ranging from outcrop to micrometer scale. A comprehensive hand-sample to thin-section scale methodology utilizing light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe, and laser ablation ICP-MS was used to thoroughly characterize the waste-rock material.

The hacienda Sauceda is one of the largest and finest haciendas in the vicinity of the City of Zacatecas, Mexico, and is said to reduce ores by the Patio process more cheaply than any other establishment. It receives its supply of ore from the San Acacio mine. This mine has been for some time, like most of the Zacatecas mines, out of bonanza, and yields, at present, ore of rather low grade. The silver occurs principally as silver-glance, ruby-silver and native silver, associated with pyrites of iron and copper, and some galena and zinc-blende, in a gangue of pure quartz, which takes the form of amythyst whenever the ore is of high grade. All the ore, as it comes from the mine, is broken by hand into small pieces, and sorted before it is delivered to the hacienda. Here it is first crushed dry in Chili mills, and then ground wet in arrastras to an impalpable powder. The sulphurets not decomposed in the patio process are separated in the settlers from the tailings and concentrated by hand. By roasting them in a reverberatory furnace with carbonate copperores, "magistral" is obtained. All machinery is driven by mulepower.
