The close area! relationship of Cretaceous or later intrusive porphyries to larger hydrothermal deposits of Pb, Zn, Au, fig, Cu, Mo, Hg,, and U of similar age in the Basin Range Province, was statistically shown in a recent paper (Stringham1) During the past year this study has been expanded to cover p11 of the larger hydrothermal deposits of similar nature occurring in the entire western United States. The sandstone type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming have been excluded since considerable controversy exists regarding their origin. The close relationship between intrusives in general and hydrothermal ore deposits has long been-recognized, but the association involving intrusive porphyry only, was suggested in 1954 when Sales concluded that the formation of porphyry may be an intermediate stage of activity between the development of granitoid rock and certain types of copper deposits. However: he applied this concept to only a few copper deposits. The relationship appears to be true also for a great majority of the hydrothermal deposits of the other metals mentioned above of Cretaceous and later age, at least in the western United States. This situation then leads to the conclusion then when exploring for similar types of hydrothermal deposits of the metals considered one may feel reasonably sure that if an intrusive porphyry of considerable size is. not present he may be facing much greater risk of finding an ore body than if a prophyry were presents Since, there are many intrusive porphyritic rocks which do not seem to be associated with hydrothermal deposit, it is believed that some distinct value can come from the recognition of intrusive porphyry which might be barren as well as the intrusive prophyry which might be productive This paper deals with that problem.

A half-ton experimental coke oven was installed at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. Designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, this unit features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick walls designed to simulate as closely as possible the carbonizing conditions for commercial, slot-type ovens. The reasons for constructing an oven of this Size, the details of the design, and the operating characteristics of the oven have been given in previous publications.3/4 The present report deals with the reproducibility of test-oven data and the effects of variations in flue temperature on the physical properties of the cokes produced. Also included are the results of 2,400° carbonizing tests for several coals and coal blends not included in the earlier reports.

Copper refineries use massive copper castings as moulds into which impure molten copper from the reverberatory furnace is poured to form anodes for further electrolytic refining. To facilitate removal of the copper anodes from the mould and to prolong the life of the mould itself, it is traditional to spray the mould surface prior to each use with a slurry of baryte in water. This slurry application leads to poor housekeeping, operating costs are escalated by the cost of the slurry, and additional problems in the subsequent refining process are experienced due to carry-over of excess undesirable baryte powder. A one-time application of a diffused layer of aluminum to the surface of the copper mould prior to putting the mould into service has been found to provide extended mould life and facilitate anode removal, as well as reducing baryte consumption; thereby reducing operating costs at both the anode manufacturing and refining stages.

Evaluation of the capacity of large-diameter drilled shafts using current load test methods present challenges when considering the magnitude of loads required to fully mobilize their capacities. Often, these full scale tests do not fully mobilize the capacity through side resistance. Therefore, the need for innovative solutions to extrapolate side resistance and interpret nominal capacity are of key interest. In this study, we evaluate three methodologies for extrapolating unit side resistance based on bi-directional load test data. Fellenius (2001) presented these methods for interpretation of pile capacity using static load tests. Our interpretations are based on the evaluation of 116 load tests. Unit side resistance was calculated and reviewed for each load test and categorized using three criteria of mobilization; (A) full, (B) partial and (C) linear. This study specifically focuses on load tests that showed fully mobilized unit side resistance behavior (Criteria A). The three methodologies were applied assuming Criteria (A) load tests were mobilized to 50% of their measured values. Subsequent comparisons of each extrapolation were then compared against the full measured values for each test and generally showed good agreement. INTRODUCTION It is widely accepted that conducting load tests such as standard top-down tests or bi-directional (i.e. O- cell) tests can help designers understand load-settlement behavior and the nominal resistance of drilled shaft foundations. These load testing methods provide the advantage of confirming design assumptions as well as improving the reliability of the foundation design. The potential cost savings from the application of these methods for mid to large size projects is self-evident. For example, in a recent project in Northern Nevada, an O-cell test on a 6.9 ft diameter, 114.8 ft length drilled shaft imposed an initial cost of $125k to the project, resulting in a 15% reduction on the total foundation cost; equivalent to $1.3 million in overall savings (Pease, 2014). However, the costs of implementing such methods on smaller projects can be prohibitively expensive (Hagerty et al, 2016). Despite the clear advantages of drilled shaft load testing, the current practice is not without limitations. Performing load tests on large-diameter drilled shafts with high capacities is a challenge considering the significant loads required to fully mobilize the capacity of such foundations. In some cases, the feasibility of these tests is impractical because the associated initial cost is not guaranteed to outweigh the final savings. As a result, large scale load tests are sometimes ruled out from the design phase of projects. Furthermore, in the majority of load tests the magnitude of loads applied are specifically selected to not approach failure, so the shafts can be used in the future foundation system (i.e. production shafts). This practice of field testing restricts our knowledge of the true capacity of the drilled shaft at failure; hence the nominal resistance remains unknown.

ENGINEERING students to the number of 73,269 had been enrolled in United States and Canadian schools on Nov. 5, 1945, but, as shown in the following tables, even this sizable number will not greatly remedy the 150,000 deficit reported by Vannevar Bush, director of the U. S. Office of Scientific Research and Development, to exist in the engineering and scientific man-power supply. These figures were received in advance from the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, and are given in detail in the January 1946 issue of the Journal of Engineering Education. Although the enrollment on Nov. 5 was an increase of 76% over the low of 41,632 in 1944-45, it was still 36% below the peak enrollment in 1941-42 of 115, 228. These figures include both undergraduate students and graduate students in the schools of the United States and Canada and are therefore comparable. As was to be expected, almost half of this enrollment is in the first or freshman year and 25% of the total are veterans. Also, 1,850, or about 2.5%, are women. A measure of the seriousness of the engineering graduate supply in these two countries is indicated by the trend of the number of first degrees that have been conferred during this period of scarcity:

It seems unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages of the modern pipe still as compared with the older type of distillation equipment used by oil refiners. The relatively low installation cost, coupled with remark-able operating efficiencies of pipe stills, precludes the consideration of other types except in rare instances where some peculiarity of product or plant may have an influence. The question of the actual heat required to distil petroleum is quite involved. We have extensive data on the latent heats of the various hydrocarbons under different conditions of pressure. We also have information regarding the specific heats of various oils and the effect of temperature thereon. Because of the complexity of petroleum and of each fraction, it seems impossible to analyze theoretically the partisl-pressure effect of the great number of hydrocarbons upon one another during distillation. If a distillation curve and percentage analysis of any crude or product are available, it is possible to construct a curve with ordinates representing per cent. distilled and B. t. u. per pound or per gallon, or other desired unit. To do so the crude is split into fractions, of 5 or 10 per cent. The boiling point and gravity of each fraction being determined, it is possible to evaluate the heat required. As each fraction is removed, the residue must be raised to a higher temperature and latent heat supplied for the successive fraction. As the calculations progress, the latent heats decrease while the specific heats increase. Such a curve is illustrated by Fig. 1 for a typical 39.9° Be. North Texas crude. The chart is illustrative of batch distillation. Theoretically, if the oil were heated by a single flash in a pipe still, the partial-pressure effect of the light products would result in the removal of the same amount of vapors at a lower temperature. Practically, we find that because of the necessarily extensive fractionating equipment required when separating many products all in vapor phase, the oil has to enter the separator at temperatures corresponding to or even above those required in the batch still. Synfuels development in the upper Colorado River basin and the population growth attendant with such development demand sizeable quantities of water. Unfortunately, the water supply in the basin is limited and such limitation may impose a significant constraint on the development of the West's abundant energy resources. Although the water for the synfuels development will be governed by the law of prior appropriation adopted in the upper basin states, the authors point out that an apparently senior water right .my not deliver a firm supply of water. The federal and Indian Reserved Water Rights Doctrine, the Colorado River Compacts the Doctrine of Equitable Apportionment, and the federal and state environmental laws can all severely diminish the value of any given water right and the synfuels industry should take care to evaluate these factors in acquiring its water.

Pressure relief is an important step in preventing and controlling rock burst disasters. Hydraulic slotting has emerged as a strategy for pressure relief and energy release in roadway surrounding rock. There is no qualitative description for the response relationship between hydraulic slotting parameters and the degree of pressure and energy release in a roadway, which is a scientific problem. In this paper, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and on-site industrial practice were comprehensively used. First, a structural model for the pressure relief and energy release of coal by hydraulic slotting in a deep roadway was established, and the pressure relief and energy release principle by hydraulic slotting was revealed. The principles and methods for determining hydraulic slotting parameters in the roadway were proposed. Three evaluation indices for the pressure relief and energy release effect of coal after hydraulic slotting were proposed, namely, the stress ratio of coal, elastic energy density ratio of coal, and displacement rate of the roadway rib. According to the evaluation indices, the degree of pressure relief and energy release was divided into three levels: reverse pressurization, full pressure relief, and transitional pressure relief. Then, a FLAC3D numerical model was constructed, the levels of pressure relief and energy release under different hydraulic slotting parameters were analyzed, and the optimal slotting parameters were determined. Finally, on-site industrial practices were carried out in Panel 7312 of the Xinhe Coal Mine. An effect test showed that the effect of pressure relief and energy release was remarkable after hydraulic slotting was adopted on the roadway surrounding rock, which can effectively reduce the risk of rock bursts. These research results can further improve hydraulic slotting technology systems and provide a theoretical basis and technical reference for the stability control of deep roadway surrounding rock.

Low commodity prices and lack of new high-grade deposits are pushing the mining industry for innovation. Lean mining has been vastly discussed in the past decades as a way to continuously improve mining efficiency. Although very theoretical, lean mining presents a set of new solutions enabled by the digital transformation that the mining industry is going through. This paper proposes a framework for a short interval control system with the purpose to allow timely responses by front line supervisors upon operational deviations. In the first part, the author briefly reviews concepts of short-range planning and lean mining. Then, the materials and methods used for the development of the short interval control system are discussed. Finally, alpha trial results are presented, and next steps discussed.

II a été possible de recueillir jusqu'à trente variables dans sept opérations minières differentes du Nord-Ouest québécois. Cette présentation rend compte de quelques résultats préliminaires obtenus à l’une d'entre elle. Entre autres, elle montre comment une association entre une analyse de régression multiple et un logiciel d'optimisation (OPTIMUL) peut servir à une application particulière de la planification d'une opération minière du Québec. Plus spécifiquement, la présentation montre comment une quantité appropriée de ANFO et de TOVEX peut maximiser la quantilé de minerai cassé, minimiser les couts de sautage ou encore minimiser les coûts d'explosifs par tonne de roche cassée, en se basant sur une série de contraintes réalistes provenant de la mine.ABSTRACTA study, underway since 1987, tries to evaluate factors affecting mines' productivity. Information has been collected from seven underground mines in Quebec and this paper shows preliminary results from one. In particular, it shows how a combination of multiple regression analysis, mathematical programming and a set of realistic mine constraints can be used for a particular application of mine planning. More specifically, the paper shows a parallel between maximizing production of tons of broken are, minimizing explosives costs or minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are by an appropriate selection of ANFO and TOVEX quantity of explosives. Finally, the paper shows that minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are is the best alternative to follow providing a special optimization program can be set up."

Control is a vital management function by which operations are brought into compliance with predetermined standards to achieve the goals of an enterprise. Events that are characterized by a low degree of expectation, avoidability, and intent necessarily have a low degree of control. Such events are difficult not only to predict but to control as well. Fortunately, very few industrial situations fall into that category of events. It is an axiom of control technology that in order to control, one must first measure; further to measure, one must know the characteristics of the subject (or environment) upon which the measurement must be made. Finally, if measurements are to be made reliably, the influences that affect the measurement must be known and, if possible, understood. The complete control cycle therefore consists of the following: (1) defining the objective, (2) planning to achieve the objective, (3) putting the plan into practice with appropriate instructions, (4) measuring variables or parameters of interest, (5) transmitting and transforming the measurements to analyze the system's status and to predict the future outcome, (6) comparing these with the defined objective, and (7) determining and taking corrective actions to bring the actual results closer to the objective. The management principle underlying the control cycle is the principle of management by exception. The application of the principle and the frequency with which corrective actions are taken vary according to the purposes of the review and control. For example, the control of a machine operation (e.g., truck on a haul road) may require adjustments and therefore data, analysis, and decisions, in intervals of seconds whereas the review for ore-grade control may take several hours. Reviews, on the other hand, for cost control may be done in intervals of weeks or months. In any case, three specific purposes of the control cycle are: (1) to correct the operation so that it follows the accepted plan closely, (2) to evaluate the operation and predict future outcomes in light of changes in the environment or of more experience, and (3) to review the objectives and modify these to be reasonable and realistic.

"IntroductionTHE ORES treated at the concentrator of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, Britannia Beach, B.C., have always contained some lead, but it was not until 1950 that the combination of lead headings and lead price was such that recovery of this metal at Britannia became worthwhile. In that year, with the mining of a new orebody, the lead in the mill feed was raised from 0.07 per cent to 0.15 per cent. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite concentrates are produced by flotation at Britannia, •and 95 per cent of the lead in the mill feed reports with the chalcopyrite concentrate, so that the rise in lead headings was reflected almost wholly in the lead content of the copper concentrate. In 1950, investigation was started to determine if some of this lead could be recovered economically."

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. The Phase 2 of Chennai Metro is being introduced in the city to ease the dependence on the existing transportation systems. Phase 2 is a combination of underground and elevated metro stretches comprising of three corridors. The current study focusses on the underground stretch of Corridor 3 which has a total of 29 underground stations. Construction of the underground cut and cover stations results in ground movements, which in turn impact the structures adjacent to the excavations. The greenfield ground settlement can be evaluated with the help of empirical approach or an approach requiring finite element modelling (FEM). The paper compares empirical and FEM approaches with regards to ground conditions in Chennai. Further, with the predicted ground settlements, building damage assessment is performed. The damage category of a building is defined based on the estimated tensile strains. This paper also compares the building damage assessment with empirical method and finite element modelling.

The objective s of this paper are: (a ) to examine and discuss the burdens we place on our extractive industry; (b) to compare the levels of taxation in Canada with those in other countries; and ( c) to suggest certain broad parameters within which our taxation policies may be made more rational and stable. Among the burdens identified are taxation, the ownership and use of our resources, environmental issues and the rather emotional issue of so-called 'super profits'. Finally, the paper will address certain broad but key areas of policy which need attention and agreement if our tax system is to be made more rational. Such areas include: whether and if so why the extractive industry should be given incentives;. what circumstances, if any, justify a 'higher' than normal' level of taxation, and, ?if the concept of economic rents is a justifiable one, how might a basis for them be established which recognizes the fluctuating value of much of the industry's output. Note: The paper was written before the 1977 Federal and Provincial budgets were presented. Consequently, the paper does not reflect any changes proposed in these budgets.

A study of ion-exchange resin crosslinkage and eluant flow rate, resin-bed shape, and addition of separating ions to feed stock was undertaken to determine their effect on the separation efficiency of ion-exchange on bastna-site-rare-earth elements. Results show that 12-percent divinylbenzene (DVB) crosslinkage resin is detrimental to separation efficiency at flow rates over 2 to 5 ml./min./sq. cm.; whereas, separation with 4-percent DVB crosslinkage resin is relatively unaffected by flow rates between 2 and 10 m1./min./sq.cm.

A significant emerging recycling, waste minimization problem stems from legacy waste from the nuclear weapons program and from production of power using nuclear fuel. Premium quality metals used in nuclear plants become contaminated, making them unsuitable for reuse. Consequently, decontamination studies were conducted to evaluate the decontamination capacity and partitioning effeetiveness of Electroslag Remelting (ESR). Eight laboratory melts were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of using ESR to transport radionuclides from the liquid metal phase to the liquid flux or slag phase. To determine the decontamination effectiveness, several surrogate compounds for uranium, plutonium and other fission products were added to the melts. During the melts, the melting rate was varied, typical slag additives were used, and two different slag compositions were evaluated. The resultant post-test ingots and slag were then analyzed to determine the partitioning of the surrogates. ESR generally proved very effective in removing contaminates from the metal with a few noted exceptions. -
