The exploration methods used by the British Coal Corporation in 1990 improve the geological reliability of underground coal production. Although some of the techniques in common use have been proved to be effective, their limitations are recognised and concentration has been on the increasing integration of direct and remote sensing techniques. Attention is focussed onto first seam workings in sections of at least 2 metres in the depth range of 400-1200 metres and covers both surface and underground exploration. The case studies of exploration techniques and their effect on mine design at several existing collieries are representative of a wide range of geological environments within the more productive British coalfields. Notwithstanding such improvements in exploration and geological reliability, further new exploration technology is currently being investigated or trialled by British Coal.

A formulation is given for radiant heat loss from the surface of molten steel held in a ladle and numerical solutions are presented for the resultant integrodif-ferential equations. The results are shown on plots of the net rate of heat loss against time, with the geometlry, emissivities, thermal properties of the walls, and Preheat as parameters. It was found that the rate of the vadiant heat loss from the exposed metal surface was comparable to the conductive losses from the Portion of the metal in direct contact with the walls. The radiant heat loss was markedly affected by the geometry and by the thermal properties of the walls the net radiant heat loss from the steel could be drastically reduced by providing a top cover and also by the provision of preheat. The results of this work are thought to be relevant to heat loss calculatious concerned with vacuum degassing and with operatzons in which molten metals are held in ladles. WhEN molten steel is held or transferred in ladles heat losses inevitably occur. The accurate assessment of these heat losses is of importance in process design considerations, as the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in certain stages of the processing sequence. As shown in Fig. 1, the principal mechanisms responsible for heat loss are: i) Conduction into the walls and ii) Thermal radation from the top metal surface (possibly augmented by natural convection) The conductive heat loss may be readily calculated as much information is available in the literature on both the general theory1'' and on its particular applications to ladle heat loss calculations. Evaluation of the radiant component of the heat loss is less straight-forward. In two recent papers it has been shown that the presence of a slag layer 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss for periods up to an hour,5'" however, should bare metal be exposed, constituting the radiant surface, substantial heat losses could occur. This latter case is of considerable practical interest in various degassing operations and in the vacuum processing of certain specialty steels, where the top surface of the metal is not covered by a protective slag layer. Under these conditions a substantial radiant flux is emitted by the top metal surface; part of this flux leaves the system, part of it falls in the ladle walls. The radiant flux incident on the ladle walls is in part absorbed and conducted away, and in part reflected and re radiated. The purpose of the paper is to present a general formulation of the problem, the resultant solution of which should enable computation of the net radiant heat loss from the metal surface. The principal variables, the effect of which will be investigated, include initial metal temperature, geometry, thermal and radiative properties of the wall, and various modes of preheat. FORMULATION Consider a cylindrical enclosure, shown in Fig. 2, with a diameter D, height H, and wall thickness W, the cover at the top of the cylinder having a wall thickness L. If the temperature of the base (representing the top surface of the metal) is kept constant, say, Tb, the problem is to calculate the net rate of heat loss from the base as a function of time, geometry, the initial temperature distribution, and the thermal properties of the system. As customary, the formulation will consist of the mathematical statement of the conservation of thermal energy within the system.

"Limonite is a collective for iron hydroxide argillaceous materials. It is very difficult to be treated due to the wide variation in specific gravity and magnetism and the high argillization rate in the course of grinding and beneficiation. The iron ore in Huangmei, Hubei, China is the typical representative of limonite. If the limonite is processed using conventional physical beneficiation methods (e.g. magnetic separation, gravity separation, flocculation-desliming-flotation, or a combined process of the three), it can only be obtained an iron concentrate grade of 51.98% and an iron metal recovery of 86.64%. However, the technique of flash magnetic roasting-magnetic separation can improve the concentrate grade to 61.03%, iron recovery to 91.17%. This paper describes the tests of recovering limonite by flash magnetic roasting in detail.IntroductionLimonite (mFe2O3, nH2O)[1] is a general designation for hydrous iron hydroxides and argillaceous matters. Limonite is hard to be separated because of its complicated geneses, comparatively weak magnetism, nonuniform grain size and being easily slimed during grinding. So most small and medium enterprises sell deslimed limonite product which was dealt with just by simple methods of washing, magnetic separation or gravity separation and so on. In recent years with the iron ore prices soaring, significant progress was made in mineral processing research of limonite. Laboratory research and industrial test results showed that flocculation-desliming-flotation process and roasting-magnetic separation process are the two best methods to recover limonite till now. To compare these two methods, roasting-magnetic separation process is superior to flocculation-desliming-flotation process in aspects of beneficiation indexes and industrial stability."

Pile foundations are underground projects which are carried out under complicated site conditions, so it is difficult to summarize their characteristic patterns from the everchanging practical pile foundations. In combination with theories, the paper analyses the effects of sound reinforced concrete piles and various types of defective piles on the propagations of stress waves. Through testing on prototype pile models, by use of the transient dynamic method and comprehensive analysis in both time domain and frequency domain, their reflection characteristics and patterns are acquired. In addition, discussions are carried out in combination with some real projects. Our model tests include comparison of large scale pile models of 20X20cm in cross section, 5. 0m in length respectively in air, standard sand, and natural stratum; prototype model tests of digged piles of 0. 7-1. 2m in diameter, and 18m, 30m in length; prototype model tests of bored piles of 0. 6m, 0. 8m in diameter, 12-20m in length. Test results show that no matter in air or buried in medium, the intrinsic characteristics of sound piles and various types of defective piles are fixed. In their time domain waveforms and spectral diagrams, obvious regularity are shown, which proves that the relations between the pile natures and their dynamic responses are fixed, which provide basis for correct judgement of pile soundness and natures of defective piles.

Cathode wear has become an increasing challenge in the aluminum industry due to the use of more graphitized materials. Today, there exist no standard laboratory methods for measuring cathode wear where different commercial materials can be ranked. The typical average wear rate in an electrolysis cell is quite small. The aim of this work was to design a test method where the wear could be accelerated compared to industrial cells. It was focused on polarized tests where the cathode is exposed to electrolyte, which gives higher aluminium carbide solubility. The cathode materials were characterized by microscopy and image analysis.

The climate change observed in the last decades, the increase of global warming, the melting of the polar ice caps, and the sea level rise have in common the non-sustainable development as causative agent. Different nations have mobilized joint efforts with the objectives of minimizing the impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, investing in the research and the development of new technologies in recycling, in biomaterials, environmentally friendly processes, and new fuel alternatives. This paper evaluates the efficiency of a Brazilian bentonite modified by acid attack, in the purification step of a waste oil to be used for biofuel production, that is, diesel from waste cooking oil (WCO). The following characterization test swere performed: XRD, CEC, XRF, SEM/EDS, specific surface area (BET), stereomicrography, kinematic viscosity, and spectrophotometry at 440 nm. The modified bentonite exhibited good purification capacity for WCO when compared to a commercial product.

"Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy-electron backscattered diffraction (SEM-EBSD) analysis were performed in an Al-Mg-Si alloy to clarify the effect of annealing and cold-rolling reduction on the texture formation. The hot-rolled specimens were cold-rolled with the reduction of 58-75%(CR1), followed by annealing at 773 K for 5 min(IA). The secondary cold-rolling(CR2)for the IA specimens with the reduction of 33–66%, followed by the solution heat treatment(ST), were performed. Focusing on the CR1 and CR2 specimens, the average r-values increased with higher primary and lower secondary cold-rolling reduction, respectively. This was considered to be due to the increase of r-values measured in the direction of 45 degree with respect to rolling direction, caused by the formation of the ß-fiber components (Brass {011}<211>, Copper {112}<111> and S {123}<634>) with high density. Based on the texture analysis of annealed specimens it was suggested that the high density of the ß-fiber components after IA and the small amount of stored strain energy of CR2 introduced by the lower cold-rolling reduction remained the ?-fiber components even after solution treatment.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si alloys have been applied to automobile body applications, due to their excellent paint-bake hardening (age-hardening) and corrosion resistance compared to other aluminum alloy. On the other hand, the mechanical properties and deep drawability of Al-Mg-Si alloys are inferior to those of steels. Thus, it is important to improve the mechanical properties and deep drawability in order to expand the application components. One of the best methods to improve the deep drawability is to increase the Lankford coefficient (r-value). Previous studies reported that the increase of the average r-value ( ) improves the deep drawability. The relationship between the r-value and texture of the alloy is also well known. Inoue et al. reported that the ß-fiber components, such as Brass ({011}<211>), Copper ({112}<111>) and S ({123}<634>), increase the r-value measured in the direction of 45o with respect to the rolling direction. r"

In this paper oil initially in place is calculated by the various methods commonly used for analysis of water drive fields using data available as time progresses. Rate and pressure are predicted by means of the same methods using data available at the end of two years&apos; history. These predictions are then compared with subsequent performance permitting an evaluation of the methods, which are Modified Schilthuis, Simplified Hurst, van Everdingen et al (1952), and the Electric Analyzer. INTRODUCTION Several variations of the material balance equation, differing in the term used to evaluate water influx, are in common use for estimating oil in place, predicting rate and volume of water influx, and forecasting producing rates and reservoir pressure in water drive reservoirs. The electric analyzer with an electrical network set up to simulate the oil reservoir and aquifer and their contained fluids may be used for the same purpose. Examples of the application of one or another of these methods have appeared in the literature. The accuracy and reliability of the material balance for calculating oil in place have been covered.&apos; However, there have been few articles in which more than one method has been applied to an actual field allowing a comparison. It is felt that a field example, simple in nature, where the Modified Schilthuis, Simplified Hurst, van Everdingen et al (1952), and the Electric Analyzer have been applied would be of benefit in providing an evaluation of these methods as to their comparative usefulness and reliability in calculating initial oil in place and predicting performance. The Torchlight Tensleep reservoir is a small field in a large aquifer. The reservoir oil is greatly under-saturated, having a bubble point of only 55 psi and 2 cu ft/bbl of gas in solution. Changes in the reservoir volume factor in the range of pressures encountered are small, meaning little error in converting production to reservoir conditions. The pressure has declined from 1,618 psi initially to 137 psi during the first four and one-half years. Water production has been negligible. For Torchlight, the material balance equation as discussed later is considerably simplified by the omission of terms having to do with free gas. Thus with simpler equations, less variables to consider, the large pressure drop, the absence of a gas phase, and rapid pressure-rate adjustments, which mean an unusual amount of history in a short time, the reservoir appears suitable for comparing the methods listed above. GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE FIELD The Torchlight field is located on the eastern side of the Big Horn Basin, Big Horn County, Wyo., approximately 3 miles east of the town of Basin. The Tensleep reservoir was discovered in September, 1947. It lies at a depth of about 3,000 ft and produces oil of 35" API gravity. "The government o f Canada has, since 1981, been under intense political pressure to modify its foreign direct investment (FOI) regulatory regime(1). To date the government&apos;s response has been limited to administrative and ""cosmetic"" changes: substantive issues have been largely ignored(2). However, as long as the economy continues to flounder , the Foreign Investment Review Agency (FIRA), as it is presently formulated , will continue to be an easy target for government critics . This phenomenon, in conjunction with the virtual certainty of a federal general election within two years, suggests that changes to the FIR Act will be seriously entertained by the present government.Recent events indicate that if change s are made, they will likely entail the adoption of a special-sector approach within the existing framework of a general screening system(3). Since this approach is currently employed in Australia(4), it would seem to be appropriate, from a public policy perspective to study that country&apos;s experience in developing and operating such a scheme. In doing so, I shall focus on the mineral sector; the rationale for doing so is as follows. First, this sector served as the focal point of the Australian FOI regulatory debater(5), Second , with the exception of the oil and gas industries, the non-petroleum mineral sector is one of the few areas of the Canadian economy wherein the Trudeau government has adopted an explicit domestic ownership target(6). Third, the non-petroleum mineral sector is, undoubtedly, a prime candidate to be denoted a s a special-sector if such a framework were to be utilized by the Canadian government!"".Although international comparisons are fraught with danger , a Canadian/Australian comparison is particularly appropriate(8). Both countries have reasonably similar economic, political and social structures . Furthermore, as noted above , Australia is the only other western country which employs a general screening mechanism for FOI. In addition, it utilizes a special area approach ; within this scheme, an explicit target of a minimum of 50% Australian ownership of all new resource projects has been formulated and clearly promulgated to all of the relevant interest groups. This policy, broadly defined, has been in place for more than six years and during this time the Australian mineral sector has, by world standards, prospered(9). Hence, the Australian experience in designating the mineral sector as a key area within a general screening system, should be of interest to Canadian policy-makers."

It is well known that the electrochemical precipitation of metals from aqueous solutions is conducted by the electrochemical standard potential scale. This scale indicates the order of nobility of different metals. Consequently, the standard potential scale shows the nocivity of metals when they are present as impurities in aqueous solutions containing metals. In the hydrometallurgy of cobalt, nickel and zinc are co-deposited during cobalt electrodeposition. Nickel has almost the same chemical, physical and electro-chemical properties as cobalt. Furthermore, the electrochemical potential of nickel is relatively higher than that of cobalt. For this reason nickel is preferentially reduced at the cathode in the presence of cobalt. The presence of small amounts of zinc in solution leads to contamination of cobalt electrowon. In spite of its lower electrochemical potential in comparison to cobalt, zinc is reduced on the cathode because of its higher hydrogen-overvoltage. But, in the hydrometallurgy of zinc, small amounts of cobalt present solution will contaminate the zinc reduced at the cathode. This is easily explained by the fact that cobalt is more electropositive than zinc. The co-deposition mechanism of sulphur at the cathode is not yet well understood. Great attention has to be paid to the mechanism of co-deposition of sulphur during cobalt electrolysis. This work aimed to investigate the influence of some parameters on the co-deposition of nickel, zinc and sulphur during cobalt electrowinning. The following parameters have been investigated: Co2+concentration in the electrolyte, current density and ammonium sulphate (NH4)2SO4additions. It has been established that important nickel, zinc and sulphur co-deposition takes place at relatively low Co2+ concentration in solution. The behaviour of these elements with regard to the cathodic phenomena has been established.

A filter consisting of a synthetic fibrous material has been determined to be a viable alternative to the wire mesh panels currently used in irrigated filter dust collection systems. An extensive laboratory investigation of the material showed that it removed a higher percentage of both respirable coal and quartz dust from the air entering a collector than did the flat and pleated wire mesh panel designs. This improvement in dust collection efficiency reduced the amount of coal and quartz dust discharged from the collector exhaust by approximately 44%. Since continued exposure to excessive levels (>5%) of respirable quartz dust presents a severe health hazard, this alternative filter medium could be of use to those mines required to comply with more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

With increased interest and urgency for coal mine safety and the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health &apos;and Safety Act, the Bureau&apos;s research effort in roof control has been greatly expanded. One new project, the subject of this paper, concerns improving conventional roof bolting and has been involved with the effects of different variables on the performance of roof bolt expansion anchors. These include types of expansion anchor, rock type at the anchorage horizon, borehole roughness, rate of torquing a roof bolt to set the anchor, installed tension, bolt length, and relative humidity fluctuations. For this work, two types of experiments were carried out. One was concerned with tension loss in bolt-anchor assemblies and simulated anchor performance in a static roof. The other dealt with anchor slippage as tension was increased and simulated anchor performance in an active roof. Trials were made in the laboratory under controlled conditions so that factors suspected of affecting expansion anchor performance could be selectively studied. Because of the natural variability in rock and the fact that most expansion anchor components are essentially rough castings or forgings, the experiments were designed to permit using analysis of variance techniques for analyzing data. Thus, in this paper, "significant" means statistically significant.

The current situation of the global mining economy is increasingly focused on the utilization of materials previously discarded in the mining process. The waste from the past, through new processing routes, is gaining new contours for use as high-value-added products. The strategic mine planning process has consequently had to adapt to the new economic reality. In standard scenarios, the focus was primarily on mine sequencing aimed at the highest economic return, with all infrastructure allocated as a necessity of mining. This work aims, in strategic planning, to configure and select the best composition of mining structures. The entire Mine-Plant-Waste-Tailings-Products chain will be considered as a factor in the sequencing of a multimine complex, to achieve the most sustainable utilization of the current mines’ waste. The sequencing is based on concurrent flows of process configurations and capacities, structure sharing, and flexibility of feed types. These factors will guide the sequencing, which will be constrained by components such as waste and tailings disposal rates, lithology feed relationships, and especially product composition through market specifications, all while respecting product shipping capacities.

In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

The feasibility of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) offgas heat recuperation by preheating scrap was investigated on a pilot plant scale by the Bureau of Mines. In this study, offgases generated during the oxygen blowing of a molten pig iron and scrap charge were passed through a static bed of shredded auto scrap. Scrap quantities varying from 100 to 180 pounds and representing from 22 to 40 percent of the 450-pound BOF metallic charge were preheated in this manner. Average scrap bed temperatures of 1,650° F for 100 pounds of scrap and 1,150° F for 180 pounds of scrap have been achieved during the blows. As compared to cold scrap used in the normal BOF practice, it was found that by preheating scrap, usage could be increased by 43 percent. The thermal energy recovered by this preheating method can account for up to 44 percent of the energy necessary to melt the scrap.

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation&apos;s power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. The reconstruction of the world after the present war must inevitably be profoundly influenced by the rise and progress of New China.The principle of Chinese mathrity has been admitted by Great Britain and the United States by their abjuration of extra-territorial tights, and by the withdrawal of the Maritime Customs Administration. The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese &quot;way of life&quot; since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that &quot;way of life.&quot; On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world.
