INTRODUCTION There has been considerable discussion in recent years of the strained relations between owners, engineers and contractors caused by the rapid increase in costly litigation in underground excavation due to construction claims. These time consuming claims are not to the best interests of the industry. It has been a conclusion of some of the concerned parties that there could be a substantial reduction in these claims if a mutual respect for each other's roles could be maintained along with a practical contractual arrangement for sharing the risks of the unforeseen costs inherent in the business. This paper will touch on the overall problem of these relationships, but confine the major discussion to the role of geology in claims and, in particular, changed conditions claims, since they form the base for the bulk of those involving geology. Geologists can make a major contribution to the reduction of these claims if their particular abilities are recognized and used properly. CLAIMS AND GEOLOGICAL RISKS The tunnel contractor is strictly bound by the contract he signs, and the risks he assumes thereby must be priced. The most important variable factor on which he must base his price is the geologic data provided and his interpretation of it. Phosphate mining and beneficiation in the State of Florida are presently being carried on by 12 different mining companies with a total of 21 mining and flotation plant locations. Their combined production of both washer rock and flotation concentrate was approximately 28,000,000 long tons in 1968. This accounted for 70-72% of the total U. S. production and close to 30% of the world's output of this mineral. From this extensive activity in the Florida phosphate field, one basic flow sheet for beneficiation of the ore has developed over the years as the most commonly employed. In fact, all of these plants with the exception of two beneficiate Florida pebble phosphate using a basic operation as illustrated in Figure I. The two plants which differ from this general approach are not using raw matrix as feed. In one instance, +14 mesh pebble is ground in a rod mill to release free silica which is subsequently removed in a cationic froth flotation circuit using an amine acetate blend and kerosene. This technique generally results in a 4-7 BPL unit upgrading of the feed pebble. The other exception to the standard flow sheet illustrated in Figure I is an operation which is beneficiating tailing piles. In this case, the material is first subjected to cationic froth flotation in order to upgrade the feed to a point comparable to normal matrix. Thereafter, after, the phosphate is floated in an anionic rougher circuit followed by cationic flotation of the silica in a cleaner circuit.

The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

A Seminar to discuss 'Reactivity of Line in Steel Making' was held in the auditorium of Iscor's Headquarters Building in Pretoria on the 5th August, 1971. The Institute organised this Seminar on the occasion of the visit of Dr Obst of the Rheinische Kalkstein Werke GMBH, Wuelfrath, West Germany. The latter is one of the largest lime companies in the world and Dr Obst is in charge of their research laboratory. He and his co-workers have earned a reputation for their research into reactivity of lime in steel making. This work is also of great importance to the steel industry in this country, particularly with the changes which are occurring with the introduction of basic oxygen furnaces. Some 80 persons representing most of the major steel companies attended this Seminar. Dr Obst presented his most interesting paper which he illustrated with projector slides. This paper is printed in full in this journal. This was followed by several contributions and active discussions. The first contribution was made by Dr T. B. Beeton of the Research and Development Department, Iscor. He gave a brief summary of the studies on reactive lime carried out at Iscor since 1968. Their work was particularly related to the selection and definition of the various reactivity tests and the correlation of these with plant results. He demonstrated that the DIN methods, particularly the Din (40°) test, gave the best results and reported that good agreement had been reached between Iscor, Highveld and Northern Lime on future test procedures. Mr B. Lowther of The Northern Lime Company then dealt with problems associated with the production of high reactive lime. The rotary kilns at The Northern Lime plant at Lime Acres are particularly suitable for the production of high-reactive lime, because this type of kiln lends itself to accurate control of temperatures and retention times. Several problems, however, exist. Because of the long haul distances and the deterioration of reactive lime by absorption of CO2 and water, high reactive lime is not suitable for most customers. To constantly be changing kiln conditions to produce relatively small quantities of high-reactive lime, therefore, causes problems. Highveld Steel at present is the only company requiring high-reactive lime and a satisfactory product is now being produced at a cost because kiln capacity is reduced and fuel costs are higher. Dr P. R. Jochens, of the National Institute for Metallurgy then submitted data to show how the reactivity of soft burnt reactive lime deteriorated due to long railage hauls. Detailed sampling of trucks had been carried out leaving the lime works and on receipt at Highveld and it was demonstrated that there was deterioration in the top layers of the truck. This top layer protected the balance of the lime which is still in good condition on arrival at Highveld. Exposure to atmosphere by further handling and storage into the bunkers at Highveld, however, resulted in further severe deterioration in the lime reactivity and the lime when finally fed to the Basic Oxygen Furnace is reduced to one third to one quarter of the original reactivity value. The same deterioration does not occur with normal run of kiln lime, which is burnt harder, but still has a satisfactory reactivity for most purposes. Mr A. A. Hejja of the Department of Metallurgy, Witwatersrand University then made a contribution on the metallurgical aspects of the use of lime of different reactivities in the Basic Oxygen Furnace and the effect on desulphurization efficiencies. He gave a wealth of data on actual tests which had been carried out and came up with the surprising conclusion that the deterioration of high-reactive lime due to transport did not have as serious an effect on the efficiency of desulphurization as one would have expected. The efficiency was good provided high-reactive lime in the first instance had been produced, irrespective of whether it had deteriorated thereafter. Poor efficiency was obtained only when the lime in the first instance was produced in an unreactive form. The temperature rise in the Basic Oxygen Furnace also has a definite effect. If lime is introduced when the temperature is too high, soft burnt reactive lime becomes hard burnt and unreactive before it can dissolve in the slag. Use of ferromanganese slag assists dissolution of lime. There was a great deal of discussion following these contributions. Particular interest was expres8ed in the special lime described by Dr Obst. This consists of a mixture of fine lime which is premixed with fluxes and either briquetted or pelletised. The question of injecting finely ground lime as an alternative was also discussed. Both these systems eliminate the necessity for highly reactive lime. With smaller lime particles, larger surfaces are exposed thereby ensuring more rapid dissolution in the molten slag. The discussions generally were lively and informative and all present derived benefit from learning of the experiences of others. The valuable contribution made by our German visitor, Dr Obst, was particularly appreciated. The instantaneous English-German translation service which was provided, greatly facilitated discussions.

An inexpensive slow-speed data acquisition system has been adapted to digitally record multiple parameters simultaneously at intervals of 15 seconds. The system was built for use with standard soils testing equipment to automatically record load and displacement parameters at predetermined instants in time. Simultaneous readout is achieved by the use of special signal conditioner and sample-and-hold circuits which read the multiple signals simultaneously and hold them until the slow acting system can print out. Three channels of a 10-channel system have been converted and found to operate successfully during a series of direct shear tests. A unique feature of the system, which significantly reduced its cost, is the power supply units. Dummy circuits are used to maintain a constant power demand during sampling) thus eliminating the need for a costly power supply with rapid response characteristics. The entire system, having an overall accuracy of 0.25 percent, was put in operation for a cost under $2,500.

THE best estimate on reserves of iron ore in the Lake Superior district is that made, in 1920, by Mr. R. C. Allen, amounting to 2,947,225,000 tons of assured and probable ore. This includes direct- shipping or so-called merchantable ores, and those capable of beneficiation by demonstrated processes. De- ducting from this the 287,000,000 tons shipped since 1920, leaves a present reserve of approximately 2,500,- 000,000 tons, or; about 50 years' supply. The assured ore in this estimate is given as 1,560,500,000 tons, which checks Mr. Lake's estimate of 1,528,948,000 tons, or about 30 years' supply. This is not a long time in the life of the steel industry, and it can be readily appreciated that the matter is important enough to war- rant the attention it is beginning to receive. The first question that engages our attention is, What is merchantable ore? In 1902 the average of all Mesabi shipments was 56.07 per cent iron and 4.35 per cent silica. Twenty-five years later it had dropped to 51.99 per cent iron, with silica up to 7.92 per cent. It has remained around these figures for' ten or twelve years and, except for a probable rise in silica, can stay there for an indefinite period. Most of these figures I am giving cover the Mesabi Range. Including the other ranges does not change the figures greatly, and the Mesabi Range commands the situation, since it produces about 65 per cent of the total annual tonnage and, according to Mr. Allen, contains 81 per cent of the assured reserves, 50 per cent of the probable reserves, and 66 per cent of both the assured and the probable reserves.

"Many of the hoisting slopes at the mines in the State of Washington are driven on extra steep dips. To facilitate hoisting they are driven wide enough to provide two tracks. The cars are handled by high-speed, first-motion electric hoists and the trips run in balance.The State mining laws a provide that special man-cars be provided on slopes of 20° or more and that no one be allowed to ride while any loaded car is being hoisted in any slope in a mine. Obviously, in addition to the fact that it is more or less hazardous to ride while an empty trip is being hoisted, considerable hoisting time is lost during the day if some one has to ride the trips in the slope.Owing to the locations of pumps and various types of equipment, more or less travel is required up and down the slope. Not only to provide a proper safety factor but also to comply with the law, some other means of transportation in an¬other passageway is desirable. This is sometimes recognized in large mines by pro viding separate hoisting shafts, or slopes, and necessary equipment, which are use for transporting men and material. The handling of material in itself would justify the system in most large mines.The following description of an automatic electric man-hoist was prepared from data furnished through the courtesy of Mr. Thomas Murphy, superintendent of the Northwestern Improvement Company's mines in the Roslyn-Cle Elum coal field.The special features of this hoist are that no hoistman is required and its operation is always under the control of the person or persons riding the trip.The hoist was installed at mine No. 5, Roslyn, Washington, to provide a means of entering and leaving the mine on idle days or at night when no hoistman was on duty and to make it unnecessary to use the main hoist for a man trip during working hours. It has been in operation for about two years and has given very satisfactory service.The hoist, with all accessories, is housed in a concrete building 200 feet back from and in direct line with one of the main airways. One car with a capacity of six men operates over a distance of 1,200 feet on a 38° pitch.The wiring details of the electric circuits which control the operation of the hoist are shown in Figure 1-a.The hoist is driven through a worm gear by a 500-volt shunt-wound direct-current motor at a car speed of 120 feet per' minute. A gravity friction brake with magnetic release is mounted on the- motor shaft and is wired in multiple with the motor field coils. The hoist drum is also equipped with emergency friction brakes, which operate by gravity and are released, in case of overspeed, by the governor geared direct to the drum shaft. When these brakes set the control circuit is opened at contact 2E-2C and the motor stops.If the descending car meets some obstruction and is stopped, the hoist continues to run and unwind the rope. To guard against this occurrence, a weighted sheave wheel rides the rope 4 feet from the drum, and if the rope becomes slack the rider drops downward and opens the contact 2C-2E which stops the hoist.Limit switches, S1 and S2, are located on the hoist indicator, which is connected to the drum shaft through sprockets and chain. The pointer P indicates the position of the hoist at all times."

This short dissertation concerning "what the client expects from the engineer" is directed mainly at the design and construction of metallic ore concentration or beneficiation plants. However, practically the same conditions apply to the design and construction of cement and lime manufacturing facilities, with the exception that the latter facilities reflect the client's and engineer's concepts of customer service and in some cases reflect promotional considerations for the product manufactured and distributed. The client expects his engineering contractor to contribute in an efficient, cooperative, and economical manner current industry-wide know-how and experience to the specific project under consideration through the client's organization

One of the critical parameters of any automated coal mining system is the ability to only cut coal and not the rock / waste surrounding it. To do this the system must be able to detect where the coal-rock/ waste interface is. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a new approach to vibrational coal interface detection (CID) by utilizing an adaptive signal discrimination (ASD) system to perform feature extraction and classification of complex vibrational signals. Accelerometers, geophones, and piezoelectric films are mounted on mining machines and/or strata and are used to monitor vibrations produced during mining operations. Selected data are digitized and the ASD system is trained on known types of vibrations (e.g., "cutting coal" and "starting to cut roof"). A signal classifier is then generated which can be used to identify unknown waveforms. The ASD system can be retrained if mining conditions change significantly.

In this ?paper practical solidification of anodes containing nickel, arsenic, antimony and bismuth is compared with the equilibrium? diagrams and kinetic ?factors. In order to clarify the distribution of the impurity elements in the anode the structures were studied after the solidification and also after the electrolysis of anodes. This examination was carried out with optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electrochemical measurements. All the nickel is remaining metallic in the copper matrix during the solidification and therefore nickel is dissolved in the electrolysis at all oxygen contents, when the nickel content is 0.25 wt-% or less in the anode. The practical .solidification mechanism of the anodes, when the nickel content exceeds 0.25 wt-%, proceeds by the crystallization of nickel oxides. In oxygen containing copper anodes nickel oxide is verified to crystallize together with antimony in certain conditions and to form a micaceous compound (3Cu2O?4NiO?Sb2O5), which may build up a very harmful floating slime in the electrolyte. Arsenic is strongly enriched along the phase boundaries in oxygen free copper anodes. An intermetallic compound Cu3As is formed when the amount of arsenic in the anode. exceeds 0.7 wt-%. This compound is more noble than the copper matrix. This means 'that a selective dissolution of copper-arsenic compounds takes place. The copper matrix dissolves more strongly than the grain boundaries. The solidification structures of oxygen free bismuth containing copper anodes show clearly the influence of bismuth. Thin bismuth films which are less .noble than the metallic copper matrix, are formed during the solid1ficatton process. As a result of this the?grain boundaries are dissolved faster than the copper matrix.

The borehole televiewer is a downhole geophysical logging device that produces continuous, oriented, 360¦ images of the drill hole wall. Two types of borehole images are currently being generated at the BHP Billiton Mount Whaleback deposit. The optical televiewer (OTV) tool captures a ærealÆ image of the borehole wall whereas an acoustic televiewer (ATV) generates an image through variations in physical borehole size, scattering the energy from an acoustic beam. Orientation of the resulting ævirtual coreÆ is derived through magnetometers and accelerometers, providing values within one degree for both inclination and azimuth. Downhole structures such as fractures, joints, foliations and bedding planes are selected directly off the borehole image, recorded and displayed in a 3D modelling package along side adjacent drill holes. Measurements are corrected from apparent to true dip and magnetic to true north. Strata-bound magnetic anomalies are identified and corresponding measurements excluded. The importance of borehole imaging increases substantially with its ability to integrate the OTV and/or ATV data with other forms of lithological and structural data. At Mount Whaleback, the borehole televiewer has been implemented to provide information for geotechnical exploration including structural analysis, lithological characterisation and rock-mass conditions. Within the large area in and around Mount Whaleback, drilling may intersect a number of different geological formations with various rock types and conditions. With the application of the borehole televiewer, reverse circulation drilling can provide information traditionally obtained by diamond drilling.

USBM designed, constructed, and operated an 18-in.-diam fluidized-bed combustor for highly caking coals to evaluate the method for possible application to power generation. In initial tests, combustion was carried on successfully, with carbon losses as low as 0.8%+ Coal ash was not satisfactory as a bed material, but mullite proved to be acceptable. Overall heat-transfer coeffients from the bed (-20 t 50 mesh mullite) to a water-cooled tube were about 75 Btuper hr-sq ft. Fluidized-bed combustion is being investigated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) as a potentially cheaper method of firing power plant boilers. Lower combustion temperatures in fluidized beds—only 1400" to 1800°F-—should reduce fireside deposition and corrosion and nitrogen oxides production. Fluidized-bed combustion also offers possible advantages in the use of additives to control SO, emissions and amenability to processing of high-ash, high-moisture coals without special preparation. This paper describes development of a fluidized-bed combustor and the results of preliminary tests. Equipment and Procedure Fig. 1 shows the 8-ft-high combustor. A cone-shaped plate perforated by I/8-in.-diam holes supports the fuel bed and admits the fluidizing air; water passing through the 3/4-in. pipe extracts heat from the combustion bed. Fig. 2 is a flow diagram of the system. Coal is fed pneumatically to the base of the fuel bed. In 2013, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) produced 251 Mt from 15 mines in Western Australia. Throughout the mines, Ore Reserve models are used for long-term and medium-term mine planning. Grade control data aids the accuracy of short-term planning. Reconciliation of models with grade control data is important for maintaining confidence in predictions from the models, understanding the limitations of the models, and identifying issues that may require further work.There are a large number of sites and models, with more than 200 professionals involved in different parts of the reconciliation process. Regular meetings of all involved and enabling effective communication are important in the reconciliation process.Reconciliation data is gathered and processed through a web-based system; Grade Block Reconciliation System. This system cuts each grade block against the required model, stores the results, and allows users to view and analyse the data. Development of this system has occurred over a number of years and all Rio Tinto Iron Ore mine geologists and resource geologists now use it as standard to report reconciliation results. The results can be viewed in many ways including by different time periods or benches. Graphing the results assists identification of trends. Centralising and standardising reconciliation has allowed easier comparison between sites. Flexibility in the system allows users to customise reports to manage issues unique to their particular site.In parallel with system development, substantial effort has been put into ensuring mining professionals get together to discuss and understand reconciliation issues. To facilitate this there are now regular sessions, including site visits. Issues are assessed on a case-by-case basis and decisions on how best to address the issues are made by the relevant stakeholders. "A fully 3-D, transient finite element model is developed to represent the magnetic damping effects on complex fluid flow, heat transfer and electromagnetic field distributions in a metallic melt. The model development is based on our in-house finite element code for the fluid flow, heat transfer and electromagnetic field calculations. The numerical model is tested against numerical and experimental results for water as reported in literature. Various numerical simulations are carried out for the melt convection and temperature distribution with and without the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Numerical results show that magnetic damping can be effectively applied to stabilize melt flow, reduce turbulence and flow levels in the melt and over a certain threshold value a higher magnetic field resulted in a greater reduction in velocity. Also, for the study of melt flow instability, a long enough running time is needed to ensure the final fluid flow recirculation pattern. Moreover, numerical results suggest that there seems to exist a threshold value of applied magnetic field, above which magnetic damping becomes possible and below which the convection in the melt is actually enhanced.1. INTRODUCTIONThe imposition of a DC magnetic field on a moving, electrically conducting fluid, such as molten metal or semiconductor melt, produces an opposing Lorentz force that results in a reduction of flow velocity in the liquid. This effect has been explored in both the semiconductor and metals industries to control natural convection and/or surface tension induced Marangoni convection as well as thermally induced flow instability during solidification processing of these melts [1-6]. A mathematical model can be of great use in developing both fundamental understanding of the fluid-magnetic field interactions in these magnetically-assisted processing systems and basic guidelines for process design, control and optimization.This paper presents a 3-D mathematical model for magnetically damped fluid flow and heat transfer in a melt cavity, which is useful for interpreting results for unidirectional solidification processes at slow solidification rate, and some preliminary results concerning the magnetic damping effects on the flow instability in the melt. The model development is based on the finite element solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, energy equations and equations for induced electric field. The model is tested against reported results and is then applied to study the fluid flow and thermal distribution in the metallic melt with and without an external magnetic field."

Hydrothermal sulfides were recovered from the16°50?S triple junction area in the North Fiji Basin, at a water depth of ca. 1900 m. The chimney samples can be divided into three groups according to their major metal contents: 1) type 1 (Fe-Cu-rich), 2) type 2 (Fe-Cu-rich with minor Zn), and 3) type 3 (Zn-rich) chimneys. Type 1 chimneys are mainly composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly precipitated under high temperature conditions (> 300°C), such as Cu, Co, Mo, and Se. Type 3 chimneys consist dominantly of sphalerite and marcasite with traces of pyrite and chalcopyrite, and are enriched in elements commonly associated with low temperature (150 to 250°C), such as Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Ga. Type 2 chimneys show mineralogy similar to that of type 1 chimneys but their metal contents range between type 1 and type 3 samples. Trace element compositions of basaltic rocks indicate that magma generation in the triple junction area was influenced by two different sources: N-MORB and E-MORB. Sulfur and lead isotope patterns of the hydrothermal chimneys show distinct differences between the type 1 and type 3 chimneys. For example, type 1 sulfides are depleted in 34S and have lower Pb isotope ratios compared to type 2 and 3 chimneys. The d34S values (0.4 to 5.6?) of chimney sulfides are typical range of sulfur isotope composition of sediment free mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal system. Type 2 and 3 sulfides show slightly higher d34S values than type 1 sulfides, which can be explained by subsurface boiling of hydrothermal fluids followed by mixing of saline solutions with ambient seawater. Lead isotope compositions of the chimneys indicate that the Pb in type 1 and type 3 chimneys originates from hydrothermal leaching of N-MORB and E-MORB volcanic rocks, respectively. Considering that both these chimneys are located in the same area, our model suggests that type 1 chimneys formed by hydrothermal circulation controlled by an intrusion of N-MORB magma; the fluids were not influenced by boiling during the formation of type 1 chimneys. In contrast, type 3 chimneys are younger and were formed by hydrothermal circulation closely related to E-MORB magma intrusion at shallower depth. The necessary conditions for phase separation of the hydrothermal fluids that formed the type 3 chimneys might result from changed P-T conditions in a shallower high-temperature reaction zone beneath the hydrothermal venting site. Under these conditions the fluid may cross the two-phase boundary for seawater, ensuring subcritical phase separation. The mineralogical and geochemical properties of these chimneys suggest that type 1 and type 3 chimneys were probably black smoker and white smoker, respectively. Type 2 chimneys might be product of low-temperature replacement of type 1 chimneys, which is related to formation of type 3 chimneys.

ThE published U-Ru equilibrium diagram indicates the existence of six intermetallic compounds in this system.' The structure of only two of the compounds, u2Ru2,3 and URU3,4 have been identified. This communication reports on the crystal structure and density of Uau3, which is formed by a peritectoid transformation at 1025° ± 5°C: U3Ru4 + U3Ru5 = U2Ru3. An alloy with the stoichiometric formula U2Ru3 was prepared by arc melting electrolytic uranium and ruthenium of 99.9 pct purity on a water-cooled copper hearth under an argon atmosphere. After homo-genization at 1000°C for 3 days, a metallographic examination revealed that the peritectoid transformation was complete and less than 5 pct of a second phase was present. A powdered sample, obtained by crushing the brittle compound, was annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C and air-cooled. Debye-Scherrer patterns were obtained with filtered CrKa, FeKa, CoKa, or CuKa radiation. The X-ray patterns of U2Ru3 weFe indexed as an fcc structure with a. = 12.895 0.00lA. The unit-cell constant and its standard deviation were calculated by a computer program described by Mueller, Heaton, and Miller.5 The density, measured by an immersion method, was 14.45 g cm-3. A calculated density of 14.48 g cm-3 was obtained on the assumption that twenty-four formula units (120 atoms) comprise a unit cell. The space group is either oh7 Fd3m, or the less symmetric, T4h, Fd3, since reflections indexed as hk0 with h + k + 4n are absent. All values of h2 + k2 + 12 permitted by both space groups are listed in Table I together with dc, do, and I. values. The calculated d spacings were obtained by the computer program of Mueller, Meyer, and simonsen.6 The observed d spacings above 0.77A were obtained from X-ray" patterns prepared with CuKa radiation, above 0.90A with CoKa radiaaion, above 0.98A with FeKa radiation, and above 1.16A with CrKa radiation. An attempt was made to identify the crystal structure of U2Ru3 by comparison with published data on other A2B3 compounds. A recent compilation7 of intermetallic compounds lists thirty-two structure types with the A2B3 stoichiometry. Only two of the structure types are fcc and they are Sb2O3(r), senarmontite, with 16 Sb2O3 per unit cell, and In2Te3 for which several structures have been proposed.8 However, the two cases cited do not have twenty-four formula units in the unit cell. We therefore, cannot identify UPRU3 with any of the other known A2B3 compounds. Ternary alloys were made in which 5 at. pct Os, Rh, or A1 were substituted for 5 pct of the Ru in U2Ru3. The osmium substitution increased the unit cell constant to 12.899 * .001A, which is to be expected since the atomic volume of osmium is slightly larger than

It has been established that molybdenum sesquisulphide, not molybdenite, is in equilibrium with molybdenum metal and sulphur vapor in the vicinity of 1100°C. The S2 pressure for this system has been obtained using the Knudsen orifice method and the standard free energy for the dissociation of S2. THIS work was undertaken to help in determining the thermodynamic properties of the molybdenum sulphide which is in equilibrium with metallic molybdenum and sulphur vapor in the temperature range 1025" to 1150°C. From the results of MontoroL and of Parravano and Malquori' molybdenite would be expected to be in equilibrium with molybdenum metal, while the results of Guichard indicate that a lower sulphide must be in equilibrium with the metal. Thus it was concluded that the problem warranted reconsideration, especially in view of the suspiciously low temperature independent term for the standard free-energy function for the reaction MoS² Mo + S,. The reaction was calculated and duly noted as being low by Richardson and Jeffes,' using the data of Parravano and Malquori.' Experimental Method The general method used in this investigation is that of the Knudsen orifice method for the determination of equilibrium pressure. The apparatus and technique are similar to those described for the determination of the vapor pressure of silver.% owever, a closed-end McDanel tube instead of fused silica was used to maintain the vacuum, a molybdenum effusion cell with a replaceable lid was employed instead of a silica cell, and a titanium getter maintained at run temperature was used to assure that no oxidation of the molybdenum or molybdenum sulphide was taking place. All runs were made at a residual pressure less than 10-5 mm Hg. The data are given in Table I. Runs 1 through 13 were obtained using molybdenite, analyzed 98.5 pct, from the Molybdenum Corp. of America. The remaining runs were done with a sample from the Climax Molybdenum Corp. which was their grade No. 3 and analyzed 59.87 pct Mo. The weight loss of the cell during heating up and cooling down was subtracted from the total weight loss of the cell during the run. Also, when the tem- perature was changed, the Knudsen cell was placed in the vacuum chamber and heated at temperature for several hours in order to allow the sulphide and the metal to adjust their compositions to the equilibrium values, to desorb or adsorb gases into or from the molybdenum cell itself, and to desorb any water from the molybdenum sulphide or molybdenum powder inside the cell. Water may have been adsorbed inside the cell because, after each run, the top of the cell was removed and the material in the cell was stirred to insure that a layer of molybdenum metal would not build up and obstruct the passage of sulphur vapor into the gas phase. It was established that the molybdenum cell alone decreased in weight an inappreciable amount when heated at the highest run temperature for long periods of time. There are two questions to be answered before the data in Table I can be used to calculate thermodynamic functions: 1—Which molybdenum sulphide is in equilibrium with molybdenum metal and sulphur vapor? 2—What sulphur species are present in the vapor phase? It can be assumed safely that no molybdenum is vaporized, since its vapor pressure is almost negligible at these temperatures. It will be shown subsequently that no sulphide of molybdenum is volatile. This paper provides an overview of some of the key issues in design of smelter gas handling systems, with particular reference to smelter smelting plants. In both primary smelting and converting, gas handling and treatment systems often represent the major capital cost component. There is also ample evidence that poor system design can be a major cause of smelter down time, lost production and unforeseen high maintenance costs. The paper discusses these issues and offers guidance for improved design.

Discussion of the paper of S. E. Bretherton, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1481 to 1487. S. E., BRETHERTON, San Francisco, Cal.:-Since preparing my paper, our chemist, F. L. Wilson, has been experimenting with Leadville, Colo., oxidized zinc ore and Leadville zinc sulphides containing lead, operating upon 40-1b. lots at a time. His results on Leadville sulphides are as follows: The raw ore contained a trace of gold, 5.04 oz. of silver, 19.1 per cent of zinc, and 7.24 per cent of lead. After roasting the ore contained a trace of gold, 5.72 oz. of silver, 0.75 per cent of copper, 21.7 per cent of zinc, and 8.29 per cent of lead. The loss in weight by leaching was 38.8 per cent. The extraction was 42.8 per cent of the copper, 80.6 per cent of the zinc, 7.1 per cent of the lead, 0.64 per cent of the silver, and no gold. The little .silver that is extracted would be thrown down with the copper when precipitating it from the zinc and both thrown hack into the residue to be smelted. There would be no trouble in smelting the residue with nearly all the sulphur eliminated and containing less than 7 per cent. of zinc. On zinc carbonates containing silicates the results are not satisfactory. H. O. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :¬The paper by Mr. Bretherton upon the application of ammonia and carbonic acid to the recovery of zinc as oxide from roasted sulphide ore is of interest to me, as the first installation of the Schnabel process for the extraction of zinc from a mixture of zinc oxide, lead oxide (with some cupric oxide), and pellets of enriched lead, produced in steaming liquated zinc-silver-lead crust of the Parkes process, was made at Lautenthal, Harz mountains, where I was chemist. In that capacity I carried out numerous experiments on the Schnabel process, was active in the erecting of the plant, and later had charge of it. After the Lautenthal plant had been in operation for some time a similar one was built at Hoboken-les-Anvers, but both have been abandoned, as the wet process could not compete with the distillation of the liquated zinc-silver-lead crust, now used universally in the Parkes process.
