"In this work, an alternative approach to evaluate the flotation performance along a flotation rougher row is presented. The collection zone as well as the froth zone performances were separately evaluated. For this purpose, sampling for metallurgical balances along with sampling of top-of-froth (TOF) grades in each cell of a flotation row were employed. The modelling of the rougher circuit consisted of using TOF grades for evaluating the collection zone recovery, because they are a good representation of the bubble loading, which identifies the true flotation process, as shown in previous studies for shallow froths. In addition, the feed characterization, size-by-liberation, allowed the identification of the mineral distribution and its evolution along the circuit. The latter result was obtained by fitting the recovery profiles as well as the TOF grades down the flotation bank. The flotation rates and the maximum recoveries in terms of size-by-liberation (size classes: -45 µm, +45-150 µm, +150 µm, and liberation classes: -20%, +20%-80%, +80%) were then estimated. The results were in good agreement with those reported in literature by other authors and showed the new approach allows flotation kinetics to be characterized in industrial circuits.INTRODUCTIONMineral recovery in industrial flotation circuits is a function of the mineral characteristics, such as particle size distribution and liberation (Trahar, 1981, Jameson, 2012), and operating conditions such as air flowrate, pulp flowrate, solids percent and reagent conditioning (Jameson 1977; Klimpel, 1980; Mehrotra and Kapur, 1974). The cell type and size (self-aerated or forced air) and the circuit arrangement (single cells or banks of cells in series) are also relevant factors. Sampling of circuits (e.g. rougher, cleaner or scavenger) are commonly carried out using standard automatic samplers for metallurgical balance assessment. However, the flotation plants are generally not provided with proper accesses for local streams, which hinders the recovery estimations and the flotation rate characterization."

There are many uncertainties that a mine designer should consider when selecting an optimal layout. Even though the inherent variability in the design parameters indicates that single-values are not representative of mining conditions, risk estimators such as ERR are often used without considering their statistical distributions. A probabilistic methodology has been developed to assess the influence of the extraction sequence and layout geometry on the rockburst risk associated with four ultra-deep mining layouts. The statistical distributions of incremental energy release rates and excess shear stresses at face elements are used as indirect estimators of rockburst risk in stopes, and the statistical distribution of the rock condition factor (RCF) is used as an indirect estimator of rockburst risk in tunnels and service excavations.

Gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from 20 diesel engines in service at five underground mines were measured with high accuracy instrumentation. The engines that were tested were checked for faults or maladjustments. The vehicle and engine maintenance organization was studied at each mine and an idealized maintenance program was devised. Faults were induced in a new diesel engine to determine their effect on the characteristics of the exhaust emissions. The results, conclusions and recommendations from this investigation are presented in this final report.

In recent years the problem of sulfur elimination in iron and steel-making has been of increasing importance. This interest has been due to the increasing amounts of sulfur coming into the system via raw materials. As a result, many investigations have been directed at obtaining information pertaining to the rate and mechanism of sulfur removal in the blast furnace as well as measuring appropriate thermodynamic quantities. Chang and Goldmanl as well as others2'3 showed that the process of sulfur transfer from molten carbon-saturated iron to blast furnace-type slags could be considered as two opposing first-order chemical reactions. Recently, Ramachandran et al.4 have shown that during desulfurization electrical neutrality is preserved in both phases and iron and silicon are transferred into the slag concurrently with the evolution of carbon monoxide gas. They concluded that the reaction s + c-+ (0)=(S) + CO(g) does not express the stoichiometry of the sulfur transfer process. As in all previous investigations, these authors studied the process of a net transfer of sulfur from metal to slag across a slag-metal interface. However, no experimental data have previously been obtained for the process of sulfurization. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the sulfurization process, i.e., net transfer of sulfur from slag to metal. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Apparatus—The equipment used in this investiga-tion was typical of that used by others.1-3The furnace was a high-frequency induction unit powered by a 35 kw Hg spark gap converter. Fig. 1 shows a schematic diagram of the apparatus. A two-compartment crucible assembly was employed to melt the slag and metal charges; being similar to that used by Ramachandran,4 in size and design. The atmosphere was that produced by reaction of hot graphite with air. Temperature measurements were made by W-Mo thermocouples which were calibrated against a Bureau of Standards Pt - Pt 10 pct Rh couple. Temperature control was always good to * 5°C and in general was much better than this figure. Raw materials used in the experiments were C. P. reagent grade where possible. DURING the last fifteen years the progress made in the science of lithology has been of a very marked character. From being a miscellaneous collection of facts and observations regarding certain mineral aggregates seemingly incapable of systematic arrangement, it has become a most interesting and orderly department of science. The investigators who have brought about this great change have recorded the results of their labors, and placed at our service an extensive and varied literature on the subject. To this I have paid some attention, and partly from .studying it, partly from my own observations, I have wrought out a classification of original or crystalline rocks, which I venture to bring under the notice of the members of this Institute. The practical importance of the subject will be acknowledged when it is considered that rock species are not without their influence on the contents of the mineral veins which intersect them. Though Germany has a very old mining history, her experience in uranium mining only started in the late sixties. Today in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) there are only 5 small mines in the exploration stage, namely Menzenschwand and Müllenbach in the Black Forest and Mähring, Popenreuth and GroBschloppen in northern Bavaria. In all these exploration mines much development is required to define shape and size of ore bodies. Mining engineers, government authorities and environmentalists alike are very much concerned about environmental safeguards and protection of mine workers against radon and its daughter products. Miners are affected by internal and external radioactive exposure. In general the external [f3]- and [µ] -exposures can be considered as small in comparison to the internal exposure and are therefore not discussed in this paper. The internal exposure is caused by the inhalation of radon and its daughter products and is relevant to the lung as the critical organ. The nobelgas radon is inert and does not from compounds with other elements easily. Contrary to the physical half-life of 3,8 days the biological half-life of radon is only 10 to 20 minutes. During the rentention time in the body only approximately 1 % of the long-lived decay products are retained in the system (SCHOGER, 1976). In this connection is it important that the radon resorption as well as the radon secretion varies individually and depends to a large extent on the age of the person (SCHOGER, 1960). RENOUX et al. (1978) have determined that the greatest part of the a(-activity in the air is attached to aerosoles with a diameter of 0,4/14. The radiation exposure of the lung by radon is negligible if compared with the exposure by short-lived decay products. For this reason one has introduced the concept of the potential [o](-energy (P) of the short-lived radon decay products, which means the total [ct]-energy, which is produced when an atom decays in the decay-series down to the long-lived lead-210. [ ] The unity of the potential [o]-energy concentration in the SI-system is 1 j/m3 air. In radiation protection however a specific unit is used namely the working level (WL): [ ] The WL-unit, though internationally recognised has not been introduced officially in Germany. Because of the large amount of tunneling still to be done in the FRG, the various mines departments responsible for safety and health in mining ask searching questions such as: - What are the laws governing radon emanation in tunneling? - Can workers be adeguately protected against radiation hazards? - How should one drive through high grade uranium ore? - What happens if the ventilation system breaks down?

The Thompson Nickel Belt, located in Northern Manitoba, Canada, contains more than 400 million tonnes of ultramafic low-grade nickel mineralization in 9 deposits. One of these, the Pipe deposit, was mined between 1971 and 1983 producing a Ni concentrate of 9% to 11% grade at 73% recovery. The operation was terminated because the poor recovery, low Ni grade and high MgO con-tent of the concentrate made processing this ore uneconomical at the metal prices prevailing at that time. Vale Inco is now re-evaluating these deposits with the intent of providing a new source of concentrate for its Thompson integrated processing facility. It is known that serpentine slimes coating on the sulphide surfaces are responsible for the poor metallurgy. Various desliming methods were tested including settling, elutriating, tabling and hydrocycloning. Hydrocycloning has proven to be the most effective means of desliming. With a feed assaying 0.70% Ni and 33% MgO, a rougher flotation concentrate assaying 22.7% Ni and 4.8% MgO was produced at a Ni recovery of 62.5% (relative to the feed to grinding), with no utilization of slimes dispersants. Another 16.6% Ni recovery was achieved in scavenger flotation resulting in a total Ni recovery of 79.1%. Batch flotation tests using various flowsheet configurations to optimize the grinding, desliming, reagentizing and flotation conditions are in progress.

Although Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Co have been the main interests since the ferromanganese nodules had been found, the other major components such as Si and Ca might be very important controlling factors in the processing due to the locally variable content. It is because of the fact that SiO2 and CaO are added to decrease the smelting temperature in the reduction-smelting method for manganese nodule processing. We have compiled the 707 chemical data for KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Survey) ferromanganese nodules, which have been acquired from 1994 to 2001 and have been also standardized from 2001 to 2003 to avoid the discrepancy between the data sets. All 707 chemical data were used for the hierarchical cluster analysis to get the elemental correlations and also classified by the morphological types. The averages from each station were classified by the facies groups (Fig. 1) and the localities. Then all data are plotted on the SiO2-CaO-MnO phase diagram at 1773°K to compare with the best compositional area in the nodule smelting. Variations and distributions of SiO2 and CaO as well as those of Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni and Co in KODOS ferromanganese nodules were also reviewed. The mineral phases assigned by the cluster analysis are CFA (Carbonate Fluorapatite), Fe-oxide, Al-silicate, and Mn-oxide. MnO contents are generally higher than SiO2 contents in most of the morphological types except for the Is- and It-type. The Dt- and Tt-type show wider range and the E-types show high anomaly in their CaO contents. The stations which belong to facies group A and B show generally higher MnO contents than SiO2 contents, however, the stations of facies group C and D show wide range in their MnO and SiO2 contents.

In a flash smelting furnace, easily combustible concentrate particles excessively oxidized and melt. The excessively oxidized molten particles then collide with less oxidized solid ones to create uniform oxidized molten particles. This collision phenomenon plays a very important role in achieving high smelting performance. The authors developed a mathematical model describing above combustion phenomena. This model incorporated fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, chemical reactions and collisions of concentrate particles. Both gas flow and particle motion were calculated using the Eulerian method. Copper concentrate was assumed to consist of chalcopyrite(CuFeS2). Considered in the concentrate reactions were the decomposition of CuFeS2, and the oxidation of the resulting sulfur(S) and pyrrhotite(FeS) to produce magnetite(Fe30 4) and sulfur dioxide(S02). Moreover a reaction due to concentrate particle collisions, in which Fe304 in the excessively oxidized molten particle reacts with FeS in the less oxidized particle, was also considered. The particle collisions were assumed to occur according to a collision probability rule obtained by computational experiments. Particle growth in diameter was described as a change in the volume fractions of particle phases. When applied to a commercial flash smelting furnace, this model reproduced the particle growth and component transfer as observed in the actual furnace.

Of the 19 major mine fire events (including thermal events) that have occurred in the last 6 years (2000-2005), it is estimated that remotely constructed mine seals could have been used at 65% of the events to control or suppress the fire. Underground observations of seals that have been remotely installed during mine fire events show that they often do not fully achieve mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure. Unfortunately, the inability to reliably close the mine void has limited or precluded the regular use of this technology. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting full-scale underground experiments at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to identify and remedy existing remote sealing technology shortcomings, to develop novel technologies, and to transfer the new or improved technologies to the mining industry. This paper will discuss the remote mine seal testing program and will provide the results of the in-mine experiments. INTRODUCTION Design and development of new products generally proceeds through a phase of initial development and discovery based on the evolution of existing arts, followed by technical innovation and development based on both pure and applied research. The development of the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) has followed a similar pattern, with the first machines closely resembling continuous coal miners. In general, however, the design of TBM's to date has been more a result of evolution and discovery than of new technical innovation, even though large sums of money have been spent on research and development. In particular, the results of experimental laboratory and field investigations have had little effect on tunnel boring machine design, and the better performance of TBM's today over those of 10 or 15 years ago, is due more to increased mechanical reliability and greater operating experience, than to improvements in penetration rates and rock fracture capability. The improvements made, have been mainly by the machine and cutter manufacturers who recognize the greater efficiency and economic advantage of utilizing large single row cutters with high load capacity along with large edge spacing. Are there any improvements to be made, therefore, in TBM performance without new and dramatic technological breakthroughs? Can TBM manufacturers design greater performance into their machines by a logical extension of the present art, and by applying what has been learned in the laboratory and field? Some, for example, believe that the kerf cutting system of boring rock is at, or close to, its opti¬mum and little improvement can be made in the present TBM concept.

The Northeast Tripp Slide is one of the larger slope failures that can be attributed to open pit mining. It is a 11.7 million cubic meter (15.3 x l0 6 yd3) wedge failure created by two thick gouge-filled fault zones whose intersection plunges into the Tripp pit at 13°. One unique aspect of this failure is that the slide is now stable despite having moved an estimated 8.5m (28 ft.) towards the pit and having reached a maximum overall velocity of 2lmmlday (0.07 ft/day). The slide started to fail in 1968, accelerated until mining in the slide's toe area was halted in April 1970, then began to decelerate. With the cessation of mining in the toe area, rubblized rock sloughed into the pit bottom which added weight to the failures toe constraints and began the stabilization process. Measurements from a network of survey stations revealed a correlation between the slide's velocity and heavy precipitation. Runoff water accumulating in the tension cracks is believed responsible for this correlation. Moreover, the survey net measurements showed that during the failure's last stage the vertical component of the slide's movement greatly increased. It is proposed that this settling was caused by plastic-like flowage of the clay gouge underlying the failure The fault zone's effective shear strength was estimated by a back- analysis on the wedge's geometry and by performing direct shear tests. The tests, performed on cores taken from samples that were collected on the failure, yielded a residual shear strength of: cohesion 0.61 kg/cm2 (8.7 lb/in2), and a friction angle of 9.6°. This residual shear strength was near1y equal to the back-calculated strength indicating that the controlling fault's effective strength was essentially the same as the residual shear strength of the gouge filling

Steel wire weld mesh is a common industry standard surface support used in underground mining, traditionally installed with mining drills during the bolting cycle. As underground mining depth and stress increase, mining methods and their sequences at these depths place challenges on conventional surface support options. These challenges have provided a need for high capacity surface support options that improve development efficiency, reduce the need for secondary ground support installation and is easily installed with current mining equipment. A 5m2 mesh testing machine was built, suspending a 9500kg concrete slab, designed with multiple hold down points to test varying bolting patterns. Mesh load and displacement is accurately measured using a data acquisition system which pushes against the restrained mesh module with an available 200kN load and 1200mm displacement capacity. A testing program comparing conventional surface support, straps and combinations of both were tested for baseline results. New module designs incorporating existing mesh types and new design concepts were manufactured to allow for single pass installation during a bolting cycle. Nine mesh types, mesh/strap combinations and new mesh module designs were compared using the same test method. Based on these results, two high capacity mesh module types are produced. This paper will detail the test program, load and displacement results and underground mesh module performance, describing the two high capacity mesh modules function within the development cycle and manual handling. SOME years ago the writer had the opportunity to plumb a number of mine-shafts, each of which presented various conditions and difficulties. This afforded the chance to compare several methods of shaft plumbing in the light of ease and rapidity. This comparison led to the development of an adaption of the Weisbach, or approximate alignment, method, to three wires in a single shaft. Professor Weisbach, some time prior to 1850, introduced his method of shaft plumbing by triangulation on but two wires, and was the first to show that a triangle of very narrow shape is the best for this purpose. THE WEISBACH METHOD The two-wire method, using a Weisbach triangle, is described in several .English text-books on mine surveying and is used frequently in various parts of the world, but in Canada it is almost unknown. The writer has described an example of this two-wire method (1), but a brief resumé here may clarify the explanation of its application to three wires. In this two-wire method, instead of endeavouring accurately to align the instrument with the wires, it is set only in approximate alignment, and the small angle formed at the instrument is measured. This is expressed graphically in Figure l, where C represents the position of the instrument and A and B the positions of the wires. The sides of the triangle are measured as well as the angle ACB, and the angles at B and A are found by applying the Sine Rule or the formula

The industry of tin ore mining, beneficiation and smelting gives rise to a number of waste products like the beneficiation plant wastes (called amang), tin smelting slags, refinery dross etc. Some of the wastes deserve treatment to obtain economically useful products or to recover the metal values. The paper describes studies conducted on two materials, viz., struverite-middling (struverite-magnetic tin), which is an intermediate product of beneficiation circuits of tin tailings, and tin-smelting slags. The struverite middling was studied for treatment by chlorination using carbon tetrachloride, so as to yield vapour products separable by convenient condensation. The treatment was also found to lead to a tin-rich product amenable for treatment by known hydrometallurgical routes. The tin smelting slag was studied by alkali-leaching so as to avoid any dissolution of iron and it was possible to obtain an iron-free product solution suitable for high purity tin recovery.

Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury ? occurs during recovery operations, Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action,Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the ? interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: ? Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

"In recent years, FFE Minerals has designed, installed and commissioned several large grinding mill circuits. This paper discusses the issues related to the erection and commissioning of large grinding mill circuits. The three circuits discussed are Collahuasi in Chile, Minera Los Pelambres in Chile, and Century Zinc in Australia. These circuits include large SAG and ball mills with both gear and gearless drive arrangements, as well as, both trunnion and shell supported mills. Aspects of these features are discussed with respect to their impact on installation and commissioning. While the normal challenges of mill erection and start-up were experienced, there were also a few unexpected challenges encountered partly due to the large scale of the equipment. An overview of the equipment and design ratings of these circuits is also provided.COLLAHUASIOverviewThe Collahuasi mills were started-up in November of 1998. The site is located in the Andes Mountains at an elevation of 4300 meters. The grinding circuit includes two lines featuring one SAG mill and one ball mill for each line. The circuit features a recycle conveyor around the SAG mills with provision for adding a pebble crusher in the future. The design tonnage of the grinding plant is 60,000 MTPD with an ore BWI of 10.5 kWh/MT.The SAG mills are 32’ x 15’ (1 3’ EGL) with 10,800 HP drives. The drive arrangements are dual pinion through pneumatic clutches. The mills are driven by low speed synchronous motors with CCV variable speed drives. The SAG mills are trunnion supported and use hydrostatic lubrication. Feed to the SAG mills is via a rock-box type feed chute on a cart. The mills discharge on to trommel screens with a bucket wheel to remove the oversize.The ball mills are 22’ x 36.5’ (36’ EGL) with 12,500 HP drives. The drive arrangements are dual pinion through pneumatic clutches. The fixed speed mills are driven by low speed synchronous motors with GE Quadramatic load sharing drives. The ball mills are shell-supported and feature multi-pad bearings with hydrodynamic lubrication. The mills are fed via a rubber lined sump box with feed spout on a cart. The ball mills also discharge on to trommel screens. Twenty-six inch (26”) diameter hydrocyclones are in closed circuit with the ball mills."

A mine collapse severs communication with trapped miners. Landlines are crushed and commercially available radios cannot penetrate hundreds of feet of dense, conductive earth without the use of regenerative repeaters that may also be crushed. This paper describes a proof-of-concept device that uses seismic P-waves, instead of radio waves, to allow communication of a code that represents prearranged messages, including the safe haven location identifier, number of people and air quality, from trapped miners to aboveground rescue units. The transmitter designed is about 0.03 m3 (1 ft3) in size and can broadcast for four hours from its 27-kg (60-lb) battery pack. The receiver consists of a geophone and a 2.5-kg (5.5- lb) signal conditioning unit attached to a laptop computer, which displays the communication signal in real time. Testing in a bituminous coal mine with an MSHA representative revealed the device was able to transmit through 271 m (890 ft) of overburden, at 0° and 12° from vertical, using 500 W of power.

Tabular uranium ore in the Grants uranium region, New Mexico, occurs as tabular layers of a urano-organic mixture suspended within host sandstones of the Morrison Formation. The intimate urano-organic association points to the organic material as the main ore control. Petrographic evidence indicates that the organic material was postdepositionally introduced into the host sandstone, probably as humic acids; however, the mechanism by which these acids precipitated from solution remains uncertain. A model, the cation scavenging model, is proposed in this paper to explain humic acid precipitation. The model, supported by evidence from regional alteration studies of the host sandstones, proposes that cations responsible for humic acid precipitation were scavenged from framework grains which altered during passage of the humic-rich fluids through the host sandstone. This process, coupled with the affinity of organic molecules for each other, caused flocculation of humic acids into tabular zones. The precipitated humic substances then continued to concentrate uranium to form the orebodies. The cation scavenging model requires only one solution, the humic-bearing solution, in the precipitation process. All cations necessary for humic acid precipitation originated in the host sandstones. This model contrasts with a previously proposed model--the brine interface or two solution hypothesis--in which it was proposed that a cation-rich brine introduced into the host sandstones provided the cations necessary for humic acid precipitation. The brine hypothesis has several drawbacks, one of which is unrealistic hydrologic reconstructions necessary to accommodate mineralization at various stratigraphic horizons in the Morrison Formation. Moreover, no mineralogic evidence exists to suggest a brine occupied the host sandstones at the time of mineralization. The proposed cation scavenging model for humic acid precipitation not only readily accounts for humic acid precipitation, but also is consistent with geologic observations and regional alteration studies.

This report describes investigations of the economic merits of multiple zone mining and beneficiation versus selective mining of altered Western phosphate rock. The same deposit was considered in both instances and it was assumed that the grade of selectively mined ore was comparable to the grade of the concentrate from beneficiation. The beneficiating scheme used for the investigation was one proved by small continuous circuit operation. All economic factors were found to favor multiple zone mining plus beneficiation. Capital requirements and production costs were lower, and production life of the deposit was extended 4.5 times. The concentrate from beneficiation would be a uniform high-quality feed for acidulation and would be low in stable metallic oxide (R203) content. Such a feed would permit improved plant operating control, and the low R203 would promote more rapid filtration and minimize sludge formation in the phosphoric acid. With the proposed treatment, the concentrate produced by flotation from this deposit would cost about 1.5 times as much per ton as the concentrate produced by classification sizing. Therefore, inclusion of a flotation step in treatment schemes requires an economic analysis for each ore deposit.
