This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

"IntroductionTHE ZINC-BASE die casting alloys in common usage contain approximately 4 per cent aluminum as the major alloy element. In addition, they contain about 0.05 per cent Mg .and may• have a small amount .of copper. These are usually the only •elements intentionally present.Small amounts of some impurities have been shown to have a deleterious effect on the properties of these alloys and therefore the impurities are kept low by starting with '99.99%' zinc.The reasons for holding the aluminum content at 4 per cent are not clear. Some statements appear in the literature that higher aluminum increases the brittleness, but probably the chief reason was the relative price of zinc and of aluminum when 4% alloys became firmly established. At that time, aluminum was three to four times the price •of zinc on a weight •basis. Recent prices, roughly equivalent per lb., make aluminum considerably cheaper than zinc on a volume basis and suggest that increased aluminum content would result in a decrease in the cost per piece due to the lower density of the alloy.Little information could be found in the literature and, therefore, it was decided to determine some physical properties of the higher aluminum zinc-base alloys made from high-purity zinc."

Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fi xed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user: to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems, to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and to conduct a comparative and risk analysis. An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help fi les as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Offi ce 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

A utilização de materiais cerâmicos em componentes que operam em elevadas temperaturas (p. ex.: trocadores de calor cerâmicos que operam acima de 800°C) é vantajosa do ponto de vista térmico, mas não é trivial em termos estruturais, uma vez que estes materiais são frágeis e portanto, suscetíveis à fratura catastrófica. Considerando a necessidade de materiais resistentes a elevadas temperaturas e que garantam a integridade de aplicações como tais trocadores de calor, este trabalho investiga as propriedades mecânicas da alumina a (Al2O3) como função da temperatura na faixa de 23°C a 850°C. Para tal, cem ensaios de flexão em 4 pontos e ensaios adicionais selecionados em 3 pontos foram realizados em amostras de seção transversal retangular de ~ 45 mm2 produzidas por gelcasting, técnica esta que tem grande potencial para moldar peças de geometria complexa. Os ensaios foram conduzidos empregando um dispositivo fabricado em Inconel (superliga de Níquel-Cromo) especialmente desenvolvido para esta finalidade e contendo articulações objetivando autocompensação de desalinhamentos. Os resultados experimentais puderam ser muito bem descritos usando a estatística biparamétrica de Weibull e demonstram o efeito da temperatura na redução da resistência à flexão. Adicionalmente, o dispositivo proposto facilitou e dinamizou a realização dos ensaios, além de garantir pequena dispersão das propriedades mecânicas obtidas, especialmente se considerado o micromecanismo frágil de fraturamento desta classe de materiais.

The object of this program was to extend the capabilities of visual paging systems both in size and function. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line for communication, monitoring, and remote control. A central station, using a minicomputer, transmits signals by phase inversion modulation of a 16,384 Hz carrier to as many as 999 remote units. The remote unit addressed returns An echo to indicate that it is functioning and, in the case of monitor units, to convey the monitor data. Magnetically latched display dis[c]s, which can be seen from both sides when posted, are used for visual paging. Lists of the addresses of posted pages, unanswered pages, and non-echoing units are prepared by the central station computer. The system was designed to be intrinsically safe and should operate for three months on a 12-volt lantern battery.

In May, 1878, I had the honor of presenting to the Institute, at the Chattanooga meeting, some observations upon the heat of the Comstock Lode, and since then the subject has attracted some attention and criticism, in the course of which, L have observed errors of apprehension which I beg leave to correct now. Mr. John Arthur Phillips discussed it before the Geological Society, his paper being printed in the Quarterly Journal for August, 1879." His criticism is based upon that part of my paper in which I quote a number of analyses of the mine waters, to illustrate the fact that the heat does not come from the oxidation of pyrite. "The goal of estimation is considered in the light of decision analysis. A simple example reveals the essential elements of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. A second example shows that these elements are also key features of many mining decisions. These two examples cause us to revive an old probabilistic notion that the goal of estimation should be to quantify what is unknown. The conditional probability distribution provides the complete statement of one's uncertainty. Once the conditional probability distribution has been established, one should retain as an estimate the value which minimizes some objective loss function. A third example shows how the ""best"" estimate depends on the chosen loss function. Current practice is almost exclusively based on the least squares method, which assumes a loss function which penalizes underestimation and overestimation equally. This is unfortunate not only because symmetry is an unrealistic assumption but also because mining offers a rare opportunity to state the loss function directly in terms of profitability. Both the theoretical framework and the practical tools exist to allow us to reconsider the conventional notion of the ""best"" estimate. IntroductionThis paper looks at estimation in the mining industry from the point-of-view of decision analysis. Virtually all decisions depend on estimates since few of the important parameters are ever known exactly. In this paper we will be referring mainly to the estimation of ore grades, though the approach discussed here is generally applicable to any decision in which relevant information is uncertain.In the first section we look at a very simple example of decision-making in the face of uncertainty. We will then tum to a mining example and see that the essential features of the simple example still pertain. From these two examples it will be clear that the decision analysis approach rests on two key concepts: the conditional probability distribution and the loss function. A third example demonstrates how different loss functions produce different ""best"" estimates from the same conditional probability distribution. In the final sections we willexamine the current practice of estimation in the mining industry. Though the tools for estimating the conditional probability distribution already exist, a change in the way we think about ""best"" estimates is needed. Very little attention is presently paid to the loss function even though it is readily available in many mining applications."

THE increased moisture due to water¬spraying for coal dust control is of interest even for mines from which the coal is to be wet-washed before screening, because in many cases wet coal dust materially decreases the loading efficiency of men an equipment at the faces. It also causes serious increase in the normal wear and deterioration of all equipment with which it comes in contact. It is important to the consumer if it increases his as-receive moisture. No attempt will be made in this paper t cover the entire subject of water-spraying of coal for dust control. It will be confine to discussion and data on (r) percentages c dust in bituminous coals, (2) moisture increases due to spraying for dust control in mines or plants by methods which have proven satisfactory for periods of one to five or more years, and (3) a few suggestions for research. SIZE AND PERCENTAGE OF COAL DUST The U. S. Bureau of Mines1 classifies a coal dust all bituminous coal passing 20-mesh sieve (0.0328 in. square opening; The percentage of such dust to be found is ROM coal, of course, varies widely wit. the characteristics of the seam, and with the methods used in the mining and in the preparation of the coal. ROM screen analyses of 12 U. S. coals selected at random from personal files given in Table I show: A few other screen analyses examined indicating 40 pct or more of 2o-mesh X o dust in 3/8 in. X o-sizes were not included because of uncertainty that they were representative. The number of results in Table I is not sufficient to give a reliable estimate of the average, or of the range to be expected, but it indicates that in every case the coal dust is a relatively large percentage of the total ROM coal, and, of course, a progressively larger percentage of resultants as the larger sizes are separated for marketing.

Attrition scrubbers may not be glamorous, but they are an important and sometimes neglected step in mineral processing. Optimal attritioning will significantly improve the results and efficiencies of subsequent processing steps and can lead to reduced costs and improved product yields. Why is attrition scrubbing used? Attrition means to wear away a surface, typically by friction or abrasion. An attrition scrubber does exactly this, using impellers to force particles against each other, causing intense scrubbing, grinding, abrasion and polishing. This process is not a new concept. It has long been used in the glass industry to remove surface contaminants from silica. But it is also widely used in many areas of mineral processing and other applications including soil remediation and plastics recycling. In mineral separation, for example, the scrubbers help improve yield and efficiencies by preparing feed materials for downstream processes such as flotation, magnetic or electrostatic separation. Inefficient scrubbing can lead to coatings remaining on valuable minerals and decreased yields, as the covered minerals cannot be processed efficiently or are mistaken as waste contaminates and removed. In the example of flotation separation, pre-flotation conditioning uses attrition scrubbers to provide better recovery of minerals while using fewer chemicals. If surface contaminants remain on the mineral, yield is reduced, as the unwanted coating acts as a barrier to the reactants, which make it unfloatable and, therefore, unrecoverable.

THE methods employed for the determination of oxides and oxygen in ferrous materials may be roughly classed in two groups, "wet" methods and "hot" methods, the first group including the iodine, electrolytic, mercuric chloride, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and chlorine methods; the second group including the vacuum-fusion and hydrogen-reduction methods. The wet methods depend upon preferential solubility in a selected medium to separate the metallic portion of the sample from the oxygen-containing constituents. Subsequent analysis of the insoluble residue permits the isolation and separate determination of individual oxides and compounds. The hot methods depend upon the reduction of the oxide constituents of the sample by means of carbon or hydrogen at elevated temperatures. With the exception of the recently developed fractional vacuum-fusion method, the hot methods do not identify individual oxides and compounds but yield only a single value represent-ing the sum of the oxygen contents of several or all of the oxide con-stituents present. With such diversity in the principles and. aims of the different groups, it is not surprising that concordance of results by differ-ent methods has usually been difficult to obtain. The present cooperative attempt to define more rigorously than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and limits of usefulness of the vari-ous methods, originated in correspondence between Dr. John Johnston, Director of Research of the United States Steel Corporation, and other interested metallurgists. The plan was, briefly, to submit identical samples to a number of laboratories for analysis by different methods and to collate the results of these analyses. The project was endorsed by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metal-lurgical Engineers at the annual meeting in February, 1933, and has been conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Iron and Steel Division and the National Bureau of Standards. "As part of the regional water authority review and upgrade of local dams a 35m x 5m x 3m wet soil mixed block was required for stabilisation of a dam wall toe in remote Victoria, Australia. Remote access, extremely poor roads and high mobilisation costs made more traditional CSM and deep mixing methods cost prohibitive. The dam required a redesign to raise the wall by 2.0m to increase water storage. Additionally, the dam required additional stabilisation to reduce the risk of liquefaction during an earthquake event. Soil testing indicated loose, cohesionless, high permeability soils to a depth of 3.0 to 3.5m across the toe of the wall. This resulted in high dam seepage through the toe of dam wall potentially causing the factor of safety during a seismic event to decrease to a dangerous level. A number of laboratory trials were completed to determine the mix ratio of cement required to improve the strength of the saturated, liquefiable soil.Wagstaff Piling was responsible for achieving the required soil/cement strength and mix depth on site. As the ground conditions were too soft for conventional soil mixing equipment, an excavator mounted Mitsui road header was modified to fit a 20 tonne excavator. A purpose built remote batching plant was set up on more stable ground approximately 200m from the wall and utilised for preparation of cement and water slurry for supply to the machine. As the ground was too soft to support the excavator, the progressively improved ground was used as the working platform. Both wet grab sampling and in situ testing was undertaken to determine the UCS of the improved soil. These results indicated several variations in the results due to size effects.1 INTRODUCTIONA small town in remote Victoria relies totally on its water supply from a small dam. The dam wall required stabilisation works by ground improvement as studies completed on the dam classified it as a high risk of failure under an earthquake event. In addition, the earth fill dam had high levels of seepage and poor control measures, requiring the dam to be upgraded to comply with all regulations.The relevant water authority engaged a contractor under a design and construct contract to complete the works. Wagstaff Piling was engaged as the Subcontractor to provide design and construction advice including the contract for the ground improvement works. Initial discussions involved CSM walls, cut-off walls and mass soil mixing solutions. However, due to the access restrictions for piling equipment, mass soiling mixing was the chosen method of ground improvement."

"In times of increasing energy costs automotive lightweight construction is gaining in importance. This paper deals with the production of hybrid steel-aluminum compounds by forging. The compound forging process is a promising method to successfully manufacture functional parts by applying resource-saving process steps. Nevertheless, challenges resulting from different material properties must be solved.The heating of hybrid material work pieces made of steel and aluminum is a great challenge. Steel is forged at a temperature of at least TSt =900 °C, while aluminum should not exceed a temperature of TA1= 500 °C. For achieving the required temperature gradient extensive experimental investigations have been carried out. Intermetallic phases form during the manufacturing process and can influence the bonding and the global part quality. In addition, methods for the characterization of the joining zone between the materials steel and aluminum are analyzed and the factors influencing the formation of intermetallic phases are determined experimentally.IntroductionIn times of increasing energy costs and stricter conditions relating to environmental protection, automotive lightweight construction is gaining in importance. The production of hybrid compounds by forging is a promising method to manufacture functional parts by applying resource-saving process steps. In compound forging a hybrid raw part consisting of a solid core, which is enclosed by a hollow casing, is joint in the forming process. This results in a graded material structure in the part in which the mechanical properties can be specifically adapted to the requirements. Compound forging is the form joining and/or firmly bonded joining of at least two different materials while plastic shape forming occurs (Figure 1)."

THE geophysical scene shifts and alters, the emphasis changes, and new possibilities loom, but the tendency is always towards widening the field and deepening the analytical penetration. Seismic methods have had their heyday, the torsion balance is being displaced by the gravimeter, electrical methods are showing deeper penetration, soil analysis is the newest tool, and gamma-ray logging appears on the horizon. One of the striking features of re- cent geophysical work in the oil fields has been the marked decrease in the number of seismic crews employed. Although the percentage of company crews is believed to have increased appreciably. the sum total has fallen sharply, as shown by the figures for the Gulf Coast area. About two years ago probably over 100 seismic parties were operating there, whereas now there are only about 35. This decrease may be partly due to the low prices of petroleum with a consequent reluctance to spend money to increase crude-oil re- serves but more probably to the fact that reflection and refraction shooting have been carried on so extensively that they have been applied to a large pro- portion of the areas in which they may reasonably be expected to succeed. Some of the earlier enthusiasm, particularly over reflection prospecting, may have erred on the side of over- optimism; some of the present curtailment may be due to over pessimism; but in the opinion of various observers seismic work at the present rate seems to be at it- optimum. It nevertheless remains pre-eminent as a technique for detailing structures in areas where good reflections can be obtained and is the only method that will give accurate depth to definite beds. Results may be poor in certain areas but many regions still remain wherein it can be applied, so that plenty of structural mapping remains to be done by the reflection seismic method.

The demand to increase production levels in smelting furnaces has driven the increase in the power levels. Consequently, greater cooling capacity of the furnace shell has been necessary, resulting in the widespread use of water-cooled elements to protect the refractory linings. Since water ingress into the furnace is an explosion hazard, monitoring and maintenance of the water-cooled elements is of key importance. Some of Hatch's recent research and development efforts have been focused on methods to provide an increased level of monitoring of water-cooled furnace elements; this paper focuses on two technologies developed for this purpose. The first involves the installation of a fibre optic temperature sensor in a water-cooled tapblock. The sensor is capable of providing high accuracy temperature measurements with a fine spatial resolution throughout the tapblock. Hatch has already developed a diagnostic system that uses multivariate statistical analysis to interpret the large quantities of data generated by the sensor. A second technology under development is concerned with enhancing the operating integrity and safety through detection of leaks in the water circuits. A successful leak detection strategy requires minimal maintenance and the ability to detect minute leaks. An instrument that meets these criteria has been investigated and is currently under development. This paper focuses on the technology and results from the test work that has been completed to date.

A major contribution to the art of blasting was made at the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company?s Hawkins Mine in Cashwauk, Minnesota during April of 1956. It was here that the first experiments with fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate were conducted-experiments which led to the development of the ammonium nitrate and fuel oil method of blasting which has been eagerly adopted by open pit and quarry operators throughout the United States. While this new blasting agent was a more or less natural outgrowth of the Akremite Process devised by Maumee Colleries of Terre Haute, Indiana; no one, to our knowledge, had used this particular combination of ingredients prior to this time. Certainly this was a "break-through" as far as the Lake Superior District was concerned. Akremite consists of a mechanical mixture of grained ammonium nitrate and a solid carbonaceous material packed in a plastic bag. At the time of its introduction to the Mesaba Range, Akremite sold for 10.5 cents a pound as compared to the 18 cent powder previously used in both wet and dry large hole blasting. The discovery of this agent was indeed a remarkable achievement, one that afforded a substantial reduction in blasting costs. However, Akremite proved to be only an intermediate step in the evolution of our present low cost explosives. Cleveland-Cliffs utilized prilled ammonium nitrate and fuel oil and then eliminated the mixing and packaging plant entirely by combining the two raw materials in the field at the drill hole collar or in the hole itself. Thus we have approached the ultimate in simplicity, for the blaster and his helper now manufacture their own explosives not only as they are needed but where they are needed, and at a cost of under 4 cents a pound. This two-man crew may charge and explode as much as 8 tons of ammonium nitrate in an eight-hour shift and in so doing break some 65,000 tons of ore.

The term "operational research" was probably first used to describe work started under E. C. Williams, now Director, SHAPE Air Defense Technical Center, late in 1937 or 1938, at the Bawdsey Research Station of the British Air Ministry, a laboratory center concerned with the development of radar equipment. After the practicability of the early techniques had been demonstrated, a large (for those days) program of development and installation was authorized. It was very soon realized, both by the Royal Air Force and by the scientists that almost as important as the gear itself was the way in which it should be used. Accordingly, it was decided that some scientists should cooperate to study the way in which the equipment should be deployed and operated in conjunction with the Royal Air Force. To distinguish this work from the normal work of a research and development establishment, the term "operational research" was coined. It merely meant at this time that this particular section of scientists was to be concerned with the use of the gear rather than with its technical development and it seemed natural to those concerned to adopt the word "operations" which has a specific connotation in the armed forces.' This method was later extended to peacetime business enterprise, government operations and other human activities. Operations research appears to have penetrated the extractive industries more slowly and less completely than other industries, the military, or the government. This may be due (1) to a difference in the attitude of management towards operations research, or towards research of any kind, for that matter; (2) to unsuitability of the extractive industries for application of the operations research method; (3) to inaccessibility of the data; (4) or to a lack of trained personnel who are interested in applying operations research to the mineral industries.

Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes in the southwestern United States are areas where middle to late Tertiary low-angle normal faulting has uncovered rocks that were at temperatures sufficient for mylonitization during the early part of Tertiary extensional faulting. Large-displacement low-angle normal faults that separate upper-and lower-plate rocks in metamorphic core complexes are termed detachment faults. The significance of Tertiary detachment faulting in the Basin and Range Province has only become apparent in the past 6-8 years, and the association of mineral deposits with detachment faults has only been recognized in the past few years as well. Crystalline rocks below detachment faults have typically undergone chloritic alteration and brecciation over a distance of a few to a few hundred meters below the fault surface (Fig. 1). Chloritic alteration and brecciation overprinted mylonitic fabrics formed during earlier ductile shearing along the down-dip projection of detachment faults. Rocks that underwent pre-Tertiary ductile deformation and prograde metamorphism were subjected, in rapid succession, to middle to late Tertiary mylonitization, brecciation and chloritic alteration, microbrecciation immediately adjacent to the fault, and subaerial exposure. Lower-plate rocks thus experienced rapid decompression and cooling as a result of tectonic denudation and isostatic uplift (Wernicke, 1981; Davis, 1983; Davis et al., 1986).

Este trabalho apresenta uma avaliação da temperabilidade, microestrutura e tenacidade de dois tubos de aços (A e B) especificados pela norma API 5CT. O aço B tem um teor de elementos de liga maior que o aço A. As amostras foram temperadas em água a 29ºC e revenidas a 700ºC/15min. Avaliou-se a temperabilidade dos aços por meio do ensaio Jominy e a tenacidade por meio da energia absorvida no ensaio de impacto Charpy. As propriedades mecânicas foram medidas pelo ensaio de tração. A caracterização da microestrutura foi realizada de forma qualitativa por meio de microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura. O aço B com maior teor de carbono e de elementos de liga tem maior temperabilidade do que aço A. Os aços A e B apresentam uma microestrutura constituída de martensita revenida e pequena quantidade de bainita.
