In combination with various physical and chemical methods also electrochemical techniques are most frequently used to improve the recovery of metals from aqueous dilute process streams or effluents e.g. in electroplating, metal finishing, mining and metallurgical plants. To insure cathodic metal recoveries with favorable current efficiency and high throughputs per unit of cell volume seve¬ral types of electrolysis cells have been developed comprising extended electrode surface areas and/or intensive electrolyte. agitation. The practical experiences with these units indicate especially for the electrolytic recovery of metals whose values are high, that the treatment cost permits profitable operations with relativly short payback periods for the units. Anodic reactions can be utilized for the removal of undesired anion contents or buildups of impurities. Appropriate combinations of these recovery methods are used to improve the versatility and the overall economy. Industrial applications reveal their potentional as addidtive techniques for existing processes to reduce the metal content of effluents to values that meet the guide lines of environmental legislation whereas integrated in-operation recovery methods are nowadays increasingly introduced to approach nearly close-loop operations.

The fair market value of an exploration property is determined by its potential to host a mineral deposit. This potential is gauged by the results of previous exploration, exploration stage, meaningful past expenditures and remaining targets that are not yet tested. Values of exploration properties can be viewed as distinct points in a three-dimensional space defined by orthogonal axes, namely: Exploration Stage (x-axis); Cumulative Expenditures (y-axis); and Property Value (z-axis). In general, these values are estimated by applying activity factors on previous exploration expenditures, e.g. an activity factor of 100% for an active property with good potential and a factor of 50% for an active property but past expenditures have not upgraded the property. At certain periods, a market factor may also be applied to reflect the activity of mineral property acquisitions. For properties that do not exhibit any exploration potential, only nominal values are applied.

High-purity neodymium, praseodymium, and didymium (a cerium-free mixture of light rare-earth elements) were prepared by electrolysis of the oxides in a medium consisting of the respective rare-earth fluorides and lithium fluoride. The metals were electrodeposited in the liquid state and collected as nodules on a skull of frozen electrolyte. Cells were operated from 1,000° to 1,100° C. The requisite temperature was maintained by passing alternating and direct currents through the bath. Graphite was used for the anodes and tungsten for the cathode. The metal products contained <0.02 percent each carbon and oxygen and <0.025 percent tungsten as major impurities. Analysis of typical didymium metal nodules showed an approximately twofold enrichment in neodymium and praseodymium over their respective concentrations in the cell feed. The lanthanum content of the metal was about one-half its content in the oxide.

Tailings (flotation waste) that is formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes due to the amount of copper it contains. Owing to the decreasing grade values in copper ores, utilization of wastes such as tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental sense. This study investigated the usage conditions of five different ammonia salts as leaching reactants for the purpose of selective extraction of copper from tailings. For this purpose, the effects of parameters such as leaching temperature and leaching time were examined at different concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium persulfate. The copper extraction efficiency in the case of using the aforementioned salts by themselves were listed as (NH4)2CO3 (73%) > (NH4)2S2O8 (69%) > NH4OH (64%) > NH4Cl (42%) > NH4NO3 (40%). The highest copper extraction efficiency was obtained in the leaching process that was conducted with the solutions obtained by mixing ammonia salts in the best conditions. No matter how perfectly sectioned or skilfully manufactured the rails used may have been, or with what care the road-bed may he maintained, legitimate results from these important factors cannot be secured unless proper attention is bestowed upon the joint-fastenings. In this country, splice-bars of various patterns furnish the practically universal joint. Other forms have been used, and are now being experimentally tested, but the typical American rail-joint consists of angle-plates or splice-bars. At the same time, it is true that scarcely a railroad engineer is satisfied with his joint. He may consider it the best of which he has knowledge, but at the same time he is well aware of many of its weak points.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.070 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70° C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 to 0.1µg/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 to 0.2 µg/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

History.—The history of gold-mining in Georgia and Alabama antedates the discovery of gold in California. A very large proportion of the gold used in the United States previous to 1849 was produced by these States. A great deal of this history is merely tradition, and no reliable statistics can be obtained ; yet a personal examination of the gold-fields of Georgia and Alabama indicates that tradition is as fairly reliable, with regard to the history of these gold-regions, as it is in any similar cases throughout the world. In Georgia, the history of gold-mining dates back to 1829, when the first gold-mining excitement in the United States occurred. In Alabama, the discovery of gold was made some years later through the work of prospectors, incited by the rich finds in the Georgia mining camps. The greatest product of gold in these States was between the years 1840 and 1849. In Lumpkin county, Ga., and Cleburne county, Ala., the districts from which the most of this gold was taken, the tailing-dumps are silent witnesses of the extensive operations which were carried on by the primitive and crude methods then known. "INTRODUCTION Reinforced Concrete (RC) members such as beams and columns are usually required to include stirrups to maintain post-crack shear capacity, and some may include stirrups that act as confining steel to maintain structural integrity during a seismic event (eg. NZS3101, ACI 318). To achieve seismic resistance, the spacing between stirrups is usually required to be much closer than is ordinarily prescribed for non-seismically resistant structures. Each stirrup must also fully enclose the longitudinal reinforcement with long end-hooks to ensure that the contained concrete is sufficiently restrained during reverse-cycle loading and the reinforcing bars are confined to prevent buckling. The close spacing between stirrups can lead to congestion of reinforcement within members, and can also be expensive to construct due to the labor-intensive nature of steel fixing. A possible alternative to closely-spaced stirrups is the use of fibers to provide restraint and confinement during a seismic event, although this is not yet recognized in codes. Previous experimental research (Jiuru et al, 1992; Filiatrault et al, 1995; Bayasi and Gebman, 2002; Billington and Yoon, 2004) has demonstrated that steel fibers are relatively effective in this application, but suffer the problem that their stiffness can make them difficult to consolidate within an already tight reinforcement cage, especially if they are relatively long (>40 mm). Moreover, steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is subject to embrittlement with the passage of time, leading to a steady loss of ductility beyond crack widths of 1-2 mm (Banthia and Trottier, 1994; Bernard and Hanke, 2002; Bernard, 2014; Bjontegaard et al, 2014; Bernard, 2015). Since cracks during seismic events are generally much larger than this, embrittlement may present a challenge to the long-term efficacy of SFRC during seismic events. An alternative to steel fibers for enhancement of seismic resistance is the use of macro-synthetic fibers. This type of fiber usually offers the advantage of being flexible so that consolidation is easier between reinforcing bars. They also offer superior durability compared to steel fibers and can reduce flexural crack widths (Bernard, 2016). Several recent small-scale investigations (Ma et al, 2012; Carnovale, 2012; Osorio et al, 2014) have indicated that macro-synthetic fibers can produce meaningful improvements in seismic resistance if used in combination with conventional steel reinforcing bars. The present investigation has extended research in this field by examining whether embossed macro-synthetic fibers can be used to increase the spacing between stirrups while maintaining seismic resistance."

The design of tailings containment structures relies on well-understood engineering methods being applied consistently. Unfortunately, not all facilities are designed or managed to the same level of competency. To standardize procedures, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC, 1998) prepared a “Guide to Tailings Management.” It recommended review of designs and an assessment of the risks associated with tailings impoundments be implemented during all phases of amine life. This paper describes how the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) process can be used to define risks associated with the design, construction and operation of a tailings management facility. And it discusses how, once the risk tolerability curves (RTC) are defined for a project, they can assist the risk management (RM) process.

The performance of flotation machines is closely related to the gas dispersion characteristics achieved in their operation. It is known that frothers play a major role not only in the size distribution of the generated bubble population, but also on the swarm rise velocity. A program to characterize frother effects on two-phase hydrodynamics (air-water) of Jameson cells was undertaken in a fully instrumented pilot unit installed at McGill University. Gas dispersion parameters (gas velocity, gas holdup and bubble size distributions) of the gas-liquid mixture generated in the downcomer were measured after its release into the separation chamber. The unit was operated under different conditions including gas velocity, liquid jet velocity and frother concentration (MIBC). Bubble size distributions for concentrations above the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) were narrow with Sauter mean diameter between 0.6 to 1.3 mm. The bubble size followed the general trend as encountered in other types of flotation machines, i.e., rapid decrease with increasing frother concentrations below 10 µL/L, and almost no change in size for concentrations above 30 µL/L. The CCC was between 10 and 15 µL/L. Strong correlations were found between bubble size and air-to-liquid flow ratio (APR), and between the bulk density of the aerated solution in the separation tank and the vacuum inside the downcomer. An equation is proposed to estimate gas holdup in the separation tank from vacuum and bulk density readings.

From the inception of the process plant, it has undergone many changes for the improvement. In the beginning, only gravity recovery of gold was carried out by using Pebble Mills and Strake Tables. Later amalgamation, Cyanidation and Zinc precipitation and finally Carbon-in-pulp gold recovery system was implemented. Grinding plant was modernized by implementing SAG and Ball Mill and Knelson concentrator for free gold recovery as a result, the production rate, rate of recovery, reduced man power, Modernization and expansion of process plant has also yielded in safe and smooth running of the plant. The symposium on production for the year 1944 includes more foreign papers than any one of the past three years, because of a partial relaxation of the censorship in many Western Hemisphere countries. The committee was not successful, however, in securing papers from Europe and the Near and Far East at this time, with the exception of Saudi Arabia and Bahrein. Where possible, these papers include summaries upon production for the missing war years, so that we shall have no permanent gap in the records. At the close of the war, we hope again to publish the usual more complete form of report for all important oil-producing countries. EXCERPTS FROM CIRCULAR TO AUTHORS In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each place in the table may represent one of three possibilities; either the proper entry is determinable and can be supplied by the author, or an approximate figure can be supplied which is the author&apos;s best guess and should be entered followed by an x, or it does not apply to the particular field and the space is left blank. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. . Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone. Compliance with Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) exposure regulation is currently performed using timeweighted average (TWA) sampling on underground mine workers. These samples are collected in the span of an entire shift and the resulting concentrations are compared to a legislated exposure limit. While this is very useful to determine the exposure level of an individual to DPM, it fails to clearly identify causes of exposure and highlight opportunities that could help reduce the exposure of workers in the course of the work shift. Real-time DPM monitoring measures the worker?s exposure as a function of time and helps identify circumstances where corrective actions can be taken or design changes can be made by the individual or the employer to reduce the overall exposure of the worker and peers. This work focused on obtaining DPM concentrations using a real-time polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) monitor. The aim was to demonstrate that this instrument, while not a direct DPM analyzer, was able to provide a concentration profile that could easily be linearly correlated to standard TWA elemental carbon measurements. In addition, several instances of improvements that could be implemented to reduce the exposure of underground employees were demonstrated.

There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.

This may necessitate sacrificing thin coal seams, generally less than one metre in thickness, which are often present in proximity to the main coal seam. This represents not only a significant loss of potential revenue and profit but also a waste of a valuable energy resource.

Carbonaceous sedimentary rocks are abundant in the upper part of the caldera or maar that hosts the Puebio Viejo Au-Ag district, and much of the Moore sulfide zone is in these rocks. These rocks are thinly layered and contain scattered plant remains and variable amounts of volcaniclastic debris and pyrite. The carbonaceous matter in the sediments yields no X-ray diffraction pattern and is not graphite. It has C/N ratios of 4 to 10, and &13C values of about -25 per mil, which indicate that it is dominantly of marine organic origin and partly degraded. Atomic S/C ratios in the unmineralized part of the carbonaceous rocks have a median of about 1.2, much higher than most similar unmineralized rocks, reflecting not only the abundance of pyrite in the sediments, but also the fact that the organic material contains several percent sulfur. Extracts from the organic material indicate that it is thermally mature and that it reacted with the hydrothermal solutions. Atomic S/C ratios in the mineralized carbonaceous rocks are generally higher than those in unmineralized carbonaceous rocks, ranging to values of 5 and more. These differences indicate that significant amounts of carbon were consumed by the reduction of sulfate and metal chloride complexes in the mineralizing fluids as they passed through the carbonaceous sediments. Direct reaction between organic material and ferrous chloride-bearing, acid-sulfate hydrothermal solutions probably caused continuous deposition of pyrite during this period. Intermittent deposition of gold from chloride complexes by the same reaction was probably facilitated by boiling or C02 effervescence.

Fission Uranium Corp.’s Triple R Uranium Deposit at its Patterson Lake South Project is located in northwest Saskatchewan in Canada’s Athabasca Basin. As part of pre-feasibility studies for the project a detailed metallurgical test program was completed to provide process design criteria. The testwork program encompassed preparation and analysis of test composites, comminution testing, uranium acid leaching, liquid-solid separation, solvent extraction of uranium, precipitation of uranium yellowcake products, tailings and effluent treatment, tailings physical and chemical characterization, and environmental testing of prepared tailings, as well as investigations of gold and silver recovery from the mineralization. The paper provides mineralogical information, testwork methodologies and test results which were used to arrive at process design criteria and the selection of the process flowsheet for the project.
