The Bureau of Mines has long been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts, the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions1 issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. The Government, with the exception of the Tennessee Valley Authority, purchased approximately 5.5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1971. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 4,366 samples. These are published (table 1) for the use of Government officials and the public. Such analyses of delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Empirical and numerical methods are the two extremes of the tools available for the seismic design of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Both have their limitations: when relying on purely empirical methods directly relevant experience may be scant; site data may be insufficient to justify a comprehensive dynamic analysis. The primary purpose of this paper is to review the analytical tools available to the design engineer of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Particular attention is devoted to simplifed models that appear to be applicable in many practical cases.

THE year 1923 saw a decline in the production of crude oil and a strong advance in the production of natural gas. The production of petroleum in Pennsylvania has been remarkably uniform for many years, but with a slight average decline. Until 1918, production was maintained above 7,500,000 bbl. Four of the six years from 1918 to 1923, inclusive, saw a yield of between 7,400,000 and 7,500,000 bbl.; 1923 gave only 7,253,000 bbl. The production of natural gas in Pennsylvania has been variable, reaching a maximum of 138,000,000,000 cu. ft. in 1906 and nearly reaching that figure again in 1907 and 1917. In 1921 production dropped to 86,000,000,000 cu. ft., and it seemed that a rapid decline had set in. Prices were raised by most of the gas companies, and -these raises sustained by the Public Service Commission. Possibly as a result of this and the better prices realized, drilling in the gas fields has been active. The year 1923 has not been prolific in large oil wells. The largest single well was drilled by the Manufacturers Light & Heat Co. on the William Auld farm near Prosperity, Morris township, Washington County. This well started at 225 bbl, but quickly dropped to 60 bbl. A 100-bbl. well was struck in September in Springhill township, Greene County. Three wells in the Tidioute pool started at 50 bbl. or better, and a well near the 28th Ward, Pittsburgh, came in at 60 bbl. One well in Washington County started at 50 bbl., but all of the other wells started at less than 20 bbl. The Tidioute pool, which was the sensation of 1922, had by Jan. 1, 1923, dropped in daily total production to 1430 bbl., by Feb. 1 to 1040 bbl., and by May 1 to 700 bbl. At that time, most of the wells were still flowing naturally, though, as the gas pressure was rapidly decreasing, it was not anticipated that such a flow would long continue. As the wells in this pool started at from 500 to. 800 bbl.. a day, it is evident how rapidly they fell off. In August, 1922, the average production per well per day was 44 bbl. ; in February, 1923, 4 bbl.

Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify, and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multiphase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two-phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone is explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (particle image velocimetry (PIV)). More specifically, the flow field with an air core has been investigated. In addition, the air-liquid two phases flow in a hydrocyclone might cause some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models are utilized in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds stress model and large eddy simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the local flow behavior and the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of hydrocyclone are selected as planes of interest and divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two-dimensional experimental velocity vector maps are obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results are validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles.

This paper describes in detail the cost of equipping and developing the Golden Belt mine, Yavapai County, Ariz. These costs should be typical of the average small gold mine in central Arizona which has been equipped with used machinery a, a minimum of capital expenditure. The conditions of remoteness, transportation, water, and power supply are about average for properties in the Bradshaw fountains and that vicinity. There are several mines in the district in the process of development and several dormant properties that might be opened in the future. The Golden Belt group of claims was taken over by the present management in May, 1931. Although some active development has been carried on in recent years, resumption of work at the old property required entire rehabilitation of the equipment and camp. As the water level had not been reached, there was no problem of dewatering. In the presentation of costs in this paper an evaluation of the cost of equipment and development work as taken over by the Golden Belt Mines, Inc., has been made. Enact data, however, on previous exploration and construction costs are lacking. The total cost of equipping and developing the mine to its present stage has been obtained by adding the disbursements of the present management to the above-mentioned evaluation. These costs do not include the cost of replacing camp, equipment destroyed by fires, of unsuccessful milling experiments, management, or obsolete equipment on the property.

"The most common agglomeration technique in iron and steelmaking is sintering, which requires the use of iron ore/concentrate mixtures, limestone and dolomite as fluxes and coke as fuel in order to produce the required melt at high temperature to cause agglomeration of the particles. Sinter feed blends containing high proportions of magnetite concentrate are difficult to granulate and to produce granules of high permeability, and sufficiently robust quasi-particles for successful sintering operations. Since the granulation of iron ore sinter feed requires no use of a binder, the added fluxes play a vital role in holding the granule particles together until they sinter. The fluxes also help to improve the granule quality and control slag composition in the blast furnace. It is well-known that the particle size distribution of the fluxes affects the granulation effectiveness and green bed permeability which determine the productivity, physical and metallurgical properties of the granules and sinter. Hence it is necessary to understand the role of flux particle size on granule properties so as to improve the granulation of iron ore sinter feed blends containing high magnetite concentrate. In this study, laboratory granulation experiments have been carried out on iron ore sinter feed blends containing high proportions of magnetite concentrate at different addition levels of limestone and dolomite mean particle sizes, to understand the influence of limestone and dolomite particle sizes on granulation rate processes and granule properties.INTRODUCTION Increases in iron ore production to meet the global demand for iron and steel products has led to the depletion of high grade iron ores and thus the current utilisation of low grade iron ore fines and concentrates. However, sinter, pellets and the lump are the required feed types used in the blast furnace. The high basicity sinter is the main iron bearing feed accounting for 70-85% in the blast furnace due to its good metallurgical and mechanical properties that allow high productivity, efficient processes and low production cost (Adam et al., 2017)."

Copper deposits in sandstones are excellent targets for open pit mines using SX-EW extraction and processing methods. The mineralogy consists of chalcocite as the primary sulfide and copper carbonates and sulfates in the zone of oxidation. Two general deposit types are recognized: early diagenetic copper deposits that are associated with the reddening of the surrounding sediments, and epigenetic deposits that are associated with the migration of copper-rich basinal fluids along faults into permeable reservoir beds with a source of reductant. Epigenetic copper deposits are more likely to contain enough tonnage to be economic.

Carbon dioxide (CO2), a major component of the greenhouse gases, could be comprehensive utilized as a valuable resource to oxidize vanadium during the converter vanadium extraction process. The thermodynamic software, FactSage, was utilized to study the oxidation ability and theoretical cooling ability of using weak oxidant CO2 as coolant in vanadium-containing hot metal. Besides, experimental research on vanadium extraction in CO2 and O2 mixed blowing extracting process had been undertaken. The results indicated that the elements C, Si, V, Mn etc. could be oxidized by weak oxidant CO2, and the content of V2O3 in slag was approached to pure O2 blowing. Furthermore, CO2 had a remarkable cooling ability and the molten bath temperature kept on decreasing as CO2 blowing rate increases. This research has proved that CO2 and O2 mixed blowing in vanadium extraction process are effective.

The solvent extraction of yttrium and neodymium from copper pregnant leach solutions (PLS) using Primene JM-T, a primary aliphatic amine, has been studied. Effect of contact time, pH, sulfate concentration, and extractant concentration were investigated using synthetic and actual PLS systems. Standard experimental conditions were 5 minute contact time, pH ~2.5, and 10 % v/v Primene JM-T concentration. Distribution isotherms were constructed for the pure systems and for actual copper leach solutions. Synthetic solutions contained 100 ppm Y and ~75 ppm Nd. Samples of PLS contained 2 - 10 ppm Nd and 14 - 30 ppm Y. Results showed that complete extraction of both yttrium and neodymium occurred within five minutes and at pH values greater than 1. It was also found that sulfate concentration does not inhibit extraction at any concentration. Additionally, the distribution isotherms created show that extraction for these metals can operationally take place in one stage.

The reliable quality assessment of grouting operations is one of the key issues in establishing impermeable grout curtains around shafts, drifts and tunnels. Reliable opera¬tional information on the decrease in the permeability of rock during the grouting process facilitates the assessment of the effectiveness of the completed curtain and assures production quality. Quality control and assurance also fa¬cilitates the early detection and elimination of possible de¬fects in the grout curtain. Thorough control of the grouting process provides the capability to evaluate decreases in the permeability of water-producing fracture zones prior to the beginning or the continuation of excavation of the shaft, tunnel or drift. In order to achieve this objective, post¬grouting hydrodynamic investigations are conducted prior to the initiation or re-initiation of work on the underground workings to measure the decrease in the permeability coef¬ficient of aquifers during grouting operations. 8.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL OF THE ISOLATION OF ROCK BY GROUTING THROUGH HOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Quality assurance and control are based on measuring the decrease in the permeability coefficient of water-pro¬ducing horizons as a result of injecting grout into the drill¬holes. For this purpose, the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient is calculated beforehand based on the acceptable value of ground water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel as specified by the "construction norm and integrated practice (SNIP)" (Anon., 1976). Having ob¬tained the values of aquifer thickness, permeability, and head distribution for each aquifer from flowmetric data (dis¬cussed in Chapter 3), the average value of the permeability coefficient of all aquifers intersected by the shaft is calcu¬lated as [ ] where Ki is the permeability coefficient of the "ith" aqui¬fer; Pi is the pressure of the "ith" aquifer; and M; is the thickness of the "ith" aquifer. The total expected inflow of ground water into the shaft is [ ] where RK is the radius of the contour of influence; RCFB is the radius of the shaft; and p is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of the ground water. The necessary reduction of the coefficient of permeabil¬ity of the aquifer [ ] where Q is the expected inflow of ground water into the shaft from eq. 8.2; Q.-fin is the acceptable inflow of ground water; and a is the safety factor. By knowing the average permeability value of the rock and the permeability reduction coefficient, it is possible to determine the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient for all the aquifers [ ] The values of the permeability coefficient, pressure, and thickness for each aquifer are determined from the data gathered during the hydrodynamic investigations conducted in grout holes prior to beginning the grouting operations as discussed in Chapter 3. After injecting the grout into the first of the holes, the injection into each of the following grout holes is preceded by repeated hydrodynamic investi¬gations. Using the data obtained for each water-producing zone, a graph is constructed where the numbers representing the grout holes in their order of grouting are placed on the abscissa, and the values of the aquifer permeability coeffi¬cient are placed on the ordinate (Fig. 103). This curve char¬acterizes the change in permeability of the given hydro¬stratigraphic unit as grouting operations are completed, one hole at a time. The results of grouting operations are considered to be positive when each sequential observation records a steady decrease in the permeability of the aquifer. The permeabil¬ity measured prior to the injection of the grout into the last hole must be lower than or equal to the acceptable perme¬ability as determined by the application of eqs. 8.1 through 8.4. Table 8.1 presents illustrative data on the hydrogeo¬logic properties of aquifers at a mine shaft prior to the initiation of grouting operations. Data also are presented on the reduction in the permeability coefficient during the in¬jection of the grout. The shaft in question intersects eleven aquifers. Based on data concerning aquifer pressure, thick¬ness, permeability, and the expected inflow rate of water for each of the strata, the average permeability coefficient is calculated according to eq. 8.1 as K = 0.2 x 10-12 m2. The diffusion field ahead of a lamellar interfnce is analyzed using an electrical analog. A self-consistent solution is obtained for the shape of the interfnce and the diffusion field by an iterative process. The solutions presented here are for a 50-50 eutectoid or eutectic, The shape of the interface is found to he independent of growth velocity and lamellar spacing, and to depend on the relative values of interfacial free energies at the phase houndaries . The mode of growth of lamellar eutectics and eutectoids has been a subject of much interest for many years.1-4 Mehl and Hagel 1 have shown photomicrographs taken by Tardif when he attempted to determine experimentally the shape of an advancing pearlite interface; the results are completely ambiguous. Brandt' and schei13 have made approximate calculations of the composition ahead of a lamellar growth front. The shape of the advancing front and the composition distribution ahead of the front are difficult to calculate because one depends on the other. It is the purpose of the present paper to describe a method by which this calculation has been done. Lamellar-eutectic growth usually occurs under conditions where the growth is fairly rapid, and the interface temperature is close to the eutectic temperature. The growth rate is usually determined by heat flow. Eutectoid growth, on the other hand, can best be studied by quenching to some temperature, and allowing growth to proceed isother-mally. In both cases the growth is believed to be controlled by diffusion* rather than by the atomic kinetics of the transformation. This being the case, a single treatment of the diffusion equation will apply to both cases, provided the region of the interface in a eutectic may be considered to be isothermal. If a part of the interface could appreciably change its thermodynamic driving force by advancing ahead of or lagging behind the mean interface, then the two cases would not be similar. Eutectics normally grow in temperature gradients of the or-der of a few degrees per centimeter. The normal eutectic spacing is the order of a few microns. Part of the interface would have to extend many lamellar spacings ahead of the mean interface before it experienced sensibly different conditions. The interface temperature is usually a few tenths of a degree below the eutectic temperature so that temperature differences of the order of one-thousandths of a degree (a displacement of one lamellar spacing) would be unimportant. Protrusions large compared to the mean spacing do occur when one phase only grows into a eutectic liquid. This is usually a dendritic type of growth, and easily distinguishable from the lamellar mode of growth. A single treatment of lamellar growth will apply equally well to both eutectic and eutectoid decomposition. At the interface, which as shown above is essentially isothermal, the difference between the equilibrium eutectic temperature Teu and the actual interface temperature Ti, can be divided into two parts: 1) the composition varies across the interface, so that the local equilibrium temperature is not Teu; and 2) the interface is curved, so that the local equilibrium temperature is depressed according to the Gibbs-Thompson relationship. This undercooling can be written as Teu-Ti =?T = mAC(x) + a/r(x) [1] where ?C(X) is the departure of the composition at a point x on the interface from the eutectic composition, see Fig. 1, r(x) is the local radius of curvature at a point x on the interface, m is the slope of the liquidus line on the phase diagram, and a is a constant given by where s is the interfacial free energy, TE is the equilibrium temperature, and L is the latent heat of fusion. The calculations in this paper will be made only for the case where the phase diagram is symmetric, that is, the eutectic occurs at 50 pct, the liquidi have the same magnitude slope m at the eutectic temperature, and C,, the amount of B rejected when unit volume of a freezes, see Fig. 2(a), is the same for both phases. As shown in Fig. 2(b), the composition ahead of the a phase will be rich in B, the composition ahead of the ß phase will be rich in A. Yellow phosphorus (YP) has been commercially produced since the 1920s. First in the USA by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), next in Russian (Kazakhstan) in the 1950s, and finally in China in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are operations in Vietnam and Sarawak on a smaller scale. YP has become very in vogue due to its use in the production of lithium iron phosphate battery cathode precursor materials by the Chinese and other western battery manufacturers. The YP is also used to produce purified phosphoric acid and higher grades of acid using a thermal oxidation process after smelting. This paper will look at the basics of the smelting including slag chemistry, alloy chemistry and offgas chemistry. The paper will look at the design of the furnaces used in the YP production process as well as the downstream recovery of phosphorus from the smelter off-gas stream to YP. The next part of the discussion will focus on the operations of a YP smelter with regards to control of the furnace to optimise phosphorus recovery to YP. Will discuss tapping cycles for alloy and slag with a view to optimal phosphorus recovery. The discussion will close out with a review of operational challenges in the smelter and a brief description of the downstream conversion of YP to high purity phosphoric acid.

Recovery of selenium and tellurium at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining Co. has been previously described by the writer.l During 1935 a new building was erected to house this operation and description of the new plant and process form the subject of this paper. The building, of modern steel and tile construction, covers an area of 5900 sq. ft. with a volume of approximately 165,000 cu. ft. The large monitored center bay is flanked by two smaller outside bays, one of which is devoted to the tellurium section. All equipment, ceilings and upper walls, are treated with aluminum paint, giving good illumination and facilitating good housekeeping, essential from a health standpoint in handling material of this nature. Equipment Layout and type of equipment conforms to the requirements of the process as described below. In the selenium section, storage tanks, neutralizing tanks and precipitators are of steel construction, lead-lined and arranged for gravity flow (Fig. 1). The neutralizing tanks are equipped with water-cooled lead coils for controlling solution temperature, agitation being accomplished with compressed air. The precipitators are provided with mechanical agitators, and sulphur dioxide is introduced into the solution through 1/2-in. lead pipes leading from a manifold attached to the cover of the precipitator. Each precipitator has internal cooling coils and an air-jet exhauster to carry off fumes. Neutralized solutions are filtered in a 29-plate wooden filter press using heavy cotton duck as a filter medium, forced feed being maintained by a Welmet centrifugal pump. Dilute solutions are concentrated by evaporation in a vacuum evaporator, constructed of cast hard lead. Heat is supplied by an outside steam chest operating under 15 Ib. steam pressure. The solution is circulated through the steam chest by a pump of antimoniallead at a rate approximating 400 cu. ft. per min. The evaporator is evacuated by a water-jet condenser that creates a vacuum of 26 in. of mercury under normal operating conditions. The capacity of the vessel is 60 cu. ft. and the rate of evaporation 25 cu. ft. per hour.

Although backfilling has been in operation for many years, the methods for selecting appropriate slurry dewatering aids have, in some cases, been rather unsophisticated. This has led to many misconceptions regarding the role of the dewatering aid and its various means of application. Testing procedures employed in the correct selection of any practically applied dewatering aid must mirror the actual working processes in which they are to be used. This constraint necessitates the development of complex testing methods when applied to backfilling. The current testing procedures were scrutinized and their various merits noted. From this study a series of testing methods was evolved which incorporate the best aspects of these testing procedures with novel ideas which would eventually result in the correct selection of the dewatering aid. A major consideration in the application of any of these methods is the modus operandi of the backfilling process, and the relevance of the tests to the process. This work attempts to consolidate the testwork performed in the past and suggest new approaches in the correct selection of acceptable dewatering aids for backfilling.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito do nióbio e do vanádio no aço estrutural, conforme norma brasileira NBR 7007 AR 415, quando laminado a quente a diferentes temperaturas de reaquecimento, nos resultados de limite de escoamento, limite de resistência e alongamento. Os demais parâmetros de processo que influenciam as propriedades mecânicas dos aços como temperatura e taxa de deformação de cada passe, temperatura de acabamento e taxa de resfriamento foram controlados e considerados constantes. Os resultados do ensaio de tração mostraram que os limites de escoamento e resistência da corrida com vanádio foram bem superiores aos obtidos da corrida com nióbio. O alongamento, em contrapartida, foi reduzido na corrida com vanádio, mas acima do valor mínimo especificado pela norma. Além disso, na corrida com nióbio, foi observado aumento das tensões de escoamento e resistência com o aumento da temperatura de reaquecimento de tarugos. Esses resultados propiciam uma maior flexibilidade da usina em trabalhar com os dois tipos de liga dependendo das condições de mercado e operacionais.

THE GREAT advances made in mechanical engineering during recent years through the use of alloy steels, as illustrated by the development of the airplane and automobile, may be ascribed primarily to the application of nickel as an alloying element. The ternary system iron-carbon-nickel has a wide industrial application and forms, further; the fundamental basis of the even greater class of the widely used quarternary steels such as nickel-chromium, nickel-silicon, and nickel-vanadium. As is not uncommon with such cases of virile growth in an industry, the application of the alloy steel in a largely empirical manner has outstripped its scientific development so that a fertile field for metallographic research still remains. In this field, the basic nickel steels require first consideration and are the subject of the present investigation, which is offered as a preliminary to the study of the more complex alloys of industrial importance. Of the principal tools of metallography-microscopic examination, determination of -mechanical properties, and thermal analysis-the last has developed much more slowly in its application to industrial needs so that the situation often exists that heat treatment operations are based on empirically determined temperatures; that is, temperatures determined without regard to the actual transformation characteristics of the alloy. This situation is undesirable as there is no uniform standard for comparison of results. It is due, outside the usual difficulties involved in temperature measurements, to the pioneer character- of much of the published work; to the lack of definiteness of the Ac2 transformation,1 particularly in low-carbon steels; to the failure to define operating conditions completely; and to the paucity of information correlating thermal characteristics with results of heat treatment.

A água refrigerada necessita de tratamento químico para proteger os equipamentos de corrosão, deposição e crescimento microbiológico. Este tratamento químico usualmente na CSN é obtido por uma empresa contratada fornecedora de produtos químicos e serviços nestes sistemas. Dentre os serviços destacam-se as análises físico químicas, monitoramento automático das dosagens, avaliação diária dos tratamentos, etc. Recentemente, em Agosto de 2014 houve o início do novo contrato deste tratamento nas nossas CBR´s, mudando-se o fornecedor, os produtos e a equipe de atuação nestes sistemas. Este trabalho visa descrever como foi realizada esta mudança, as dificuldades enfrentadas inicialmente e os ganhos obtidos com esta alteração do tratamento. Destacamos os ganhos no monitoramento em certos sistemas que anteriormente não era realizado, como nos Staves do Alto Forno 3 e os ganhos financeiros em relação ao tratamento.
