Coke combustion during sintering process is significantly governed by coke breeze size distribution, which in turn affect sinter quality i.e. sinter granulometry, Tumbler index, Reduction Degradation Index and Reducibility Index of sinter. To know the effect of microfines of coke breeze on sintering process parameters, pot sintering tests were conducted and it was found that when microfines are eliminated and optimum coke size (1-3mm) is used yield of sinter increased by more than 7%. Similarly productivity increased by 9%, the strength of sinter i.e. ISO Tumbler Index increased by 2.3% and +10mm sinter size increased by 5.5%. Controlling of microfines during crushing and by improving crushing index will result in improved quality and productivity of sinter with lesser amount of coke breeze. This paper describes that how to optimize solid fuel i.e. coke breeze consumption in sintering process through granulometry control. The present concept assumes carrying out the process of controlled nitriding with NH3 alone. This is a simpler process than that using two-component mixes of ammonia diluted with N2 or NH3diss. The regulation of the chemical composition of the atmosphere in the retort, and therefore the regulation of the nitriding potential KN, is obtained through the variation of the inflow rate of NH3 into the retort. What is a completely new things in a relevant process, the inflow of NH3 into the furnace is at times reduced to zero, which widens the range of the gas composition in the retort (and by the same token, of KN). The amount of NH3 introduced into the furnace is regulated (controlled) with the aid of a gas analyzer (for example an infrared analyzer). The gas analyzer opens and closes periodically the NH3 inlet valve with a frequency maintaining a desired gas composition (a desired KN) in the retort. The concept was based on experimental and theoretical investigations in term of thermodynamic and kinetic of gas nitriding. Investigations were carried out in a laboratory furnace with a quartz tube and also in an industrial furnace with a steel retort and a circulating fan. Nitriding was performed using NH3, NH3+H2, NH3+NH3diss. mixtures. In an industrial furnace the supply of NH3 into the retort was periodically closed, though with an operating circulation fan. The studies demonstrated that the growth rate of nitrided layer depends only on the composition of the atmosphere, (or KN), in the retort. It depends neither on a type of atmosphere introduced into furnace (NH3, NH3+NH3diss. or NH3+H2) nor a type of furnace (laboratory with a quartz tube or industrial with steel retort and fan). The results proved also that entirely closing of NH3 supply to the retort does not affect the growth rate of nitrided layer. A detailed analyses of the results was performed in a paper.

As part of the initial investigation and validation of a new boundary-element formulation for stress modeling in coal mines, the underground stresses and displacements at two multiple-seam coal mines with unique stress problems were modeled and predicted. The new program, LAMODEL, calculates stresses and displacements at the seam level and at requested locations in the overburden or at the surface. Both linear elastic and nonlinear seam materials can be used, and surface effects, multiple seams, and multiple mining steps can be simulated. In order to most efficiently use LAMODEL for accurate stress prediction, the program is first calibrated to the site-specific geomechanics based on previously observed stress conditions at the mine. For this calibration process, a previously mined area is "stress mapped" by quantifying the observed pillar and strata behavior using a numerical rating system. Then, the site-specific mechanical properties in the model are adjusted to provide the best correlation between the predicted stresses and the observed underground stress rating. Once calibrated, the model is then used to predict future stress problems ahead of mining. At the two case study mines, the calibrated models showed good correlation with the observed stresses and also accurately predicted upcoming high stress areas for preventive action by the mines.

Polyethylene is widely used for packing applications. Different grades of polyethylene, LLDPE and LDPE play a major role in the film blowing industry. The use of nanoclay in polymer matrices (non-polar) requires the use of a compatibilizer agent, ethylene graft maleic anhydride copolymer (PE-g-MA), which acts as a bridge for nanoclay-matrix-interaction. In our study, blown films of LLDPE, LDPE, and their blends were produced using a twin screw extruder. The combination of PEs as matrix, montmorillonite (MMT) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) intended to improve mechanical and thermal properties. Nanocomposites films with 1 wt% of montmorillonite and 0.5–1.0 wt% silver nanoparticles were prepared by blow extrusion and evaluated. Nanoclay intercalation/exfoliation degree was investigated by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated. The results showed optimum dispersion at intercalation/exfoliation levels for polyethylene nanocomposite (PENC), slight increasing in mechanical and especially improvement in thermal properties.

The results of an experimental investigation into the possible use of medium energy acoustic fields (130 to 140 dB) to precipitate 1 to 10 micron particles is presented. The aerosol was produced with a LeMer generator using oleic acid and nitrogen. The sound field was a sinusoidal standing wave field in an acrylic tube, with light transmission data used for concentration determination. The results showed collection efficiencies of up to 80% on 2 micron particles with a residence time of 11.8 seconds at a sound pressure level of 139 dB re 2x10-5 N/m2. A discussion of the possible turbulent mechanism is made, as well as review and comparison with others? work.

Constructing upstream raises with tailings is an accepted and cost-effective practice in Western Australia, where the climatic conditions are favourable, desiccation (and hence overconsolidation) occurs rapidly due to air drying and there is a perceived low seismic risk. This is in contrast to many other settings, where there is either a positive water balance, high seismicity or a combination of both. In recent times, there has been an increased focus on seismicity in areas of Australia that have historically been considered to be of low seismic risk. The increased focus is driven by two recently published documents used by tailings practitioners and increased awareness from corporate entities, particularly those with mines in high-seismicity regions such as South-East Asia and South America (particularly Chile).The increased awareness has resulted in increased rigour being applied to seismic design of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in general, and particularly upstream-raised TSFs. This paper compares the results of a seismic stability assessment for an upstream-raised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, which has historically been considered a low seismic area, with a seismic stability assessment carried out for a crossvalley TSF containing similar tailings but located in a high-rainfall, high-seismic setting in South-East Asia. The influence of the adopted design earthquake values on the results of the assessments and the potential impact of the maximum design earthquake (MDE) on the design approach is presented for both cases. The results indicate that although the Western Australian site is located in an area thought to have low seismic risk, the screening level analyses suggest that the MDE could result in liquefaction of the tailings materials. Not surprisingly, liquefaction was also indicated for the South-East Asian site. The outcomes of the assessment are also presented.CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2015. "The kinetics of leaching of a saprolitic ore from Indonesia by citric acid solution under atmospheric pressure was investigated. An examination of the effects of leaching temperature, citric acid concentration, pulp density and ore particle size on the dissolution rate of nickel found that they all had significant influence on the rate. The highest nickel recovery (95.6 percent) was achieved under the leaching conditions of ore particle size of 212-355 microns, citric acid concentration of 1 M, leaching time of 15 days, pulp density of 20 weight/volume percent, leaching temperature of 40°C and shaker speed of 200 rpm. The shrinking core model was found to be appropriate for describing the leaching kinetics of this ore in citric acid solutions at atmospheric pressure. The experimental data were well interpreted by this model with rate of reaction controlled by diffusion through the solid product layer. Using the Arrhenius expression, the apparent activation energy for nickel dissolution was evaluated as 12.38 kJ/mol. Finally, on the basis of the shrinking core model, a proposed empirical kinetic model for the leaching of nickel from this Indonesian saprolitic ore was expressed as a mathematical model, which was verified as consistent with the observed experimental results.IntroductionIndonesia has some of the world’s largest nickel laterite reserves and was the largest producer of nickel – in the form of nickel lateritic ores – in the world in 2013 (Merchant Research and Consulting Ltd, 2014). However, only high-grade saprolites are processed in Indonesia using pyrometallurgical methods to produce ferronickel and nickel matte. Lower-grade saprolites and limonites are removed, becoming waste or overburden in mining site areas. Hydrometallurgical methods, involving either chemical leaching or bioleaching, are now seen as the most important technologies for treating nickel laterites in the future because of their advantage of not only extracting nickel and iron but also other valuable elements. In addition, hydrometallurgical methods consume less energy and have lower capital and operational costs. Although they are recognized to be more suited to limonites, some researchers have studied their use in the extraction of nickel and other metals from saprolites (Guo et al., 2009; Lu et al., 2013). Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metals, especially nickel, promise to be meaningful alternatives to pyrometallurgical processes to primarily treat low-grade saprolites for which pyrometallurgical processing is not favorable"

Natural rubber/organophilic clay nanocomposites were prepared and characterized. A brown bentonite from Paraiba’s State, Brazil was modified with a sodium salt and treated with quaternary ammonium salt hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The clay in its natural state, after cation exchange with sodium and after organophilization was characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, thermal analysis. Nanocomposite samples were prepared containing 10 resin percent of organophilic clay. The vulcanized samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM. The nanocomposites obtained showed improvement in their mechanical properties in comparison with samples without clay.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Harmony mine, Baker, daho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. About 150 tons of copper ore containing 4 per cent copper, 0.001 ounce gold, and 0.1 ounce silver, is being produced daily from the Harmony mine by the shrinkage method of mining. The ore is taken by an aerial tramway 1/3 mile long to the mill, where it is concentrated. The concentrate is shipped 8 miles by truck to the railroad and thence by rail to Utah for smelting.

Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

To improve the level of hearing protection by providing workers with an inexpensive, easy-to-use device to check earplug fit. Background Approximately 30 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise on the job, placing them at risk of permanent hearing loss, tinnitus, and other disorders. Although the preferred solution is to eliminate noise through engineering controls or to reduce noise exposure through administrative controls, hearing protectors are critical when noise is unavoidable. Studies of hearing protector users have shown that average protection values in the real world are much lower than the labeled noise reduction ratings determined in laboratories with trained and motivated subjects. Even worse, many hearing pro­tector users get virtually no protection at all because of poor fit. The studies also show that users have a harder time achieving adequate protection levels with earplugs than with earmuffs. It?s difficult for users to tell if earplugs are working well just by looking at them. A more accurate approach is to check how much they block or ?attenuate? noise. Earplugs vary in their attenuation characteristics, with most providing a maximum of 20?35 decibels of noise reduction when worn correctly. Any earplug that?s suitable for use in noisy settings will attenuate noise by at least 15 decibels. Personal fit testing is an effective way to help hearing protector users improve the fit and protection levels of the devices. However, existing fit-testing systems are expensive and unsuitable for use at many industrial worksites.

A computer program was developed to simulate transient strains and stresses during an overcoring in the situ stress measurement. The solution is based on superpositioning of elastic stresses. The measured strains can be compared with the calculated ones to check if the measured transient behaviour is accordant with the interpreted in situ state of stress. If not, the in situ state of stress can be calculated based on any transient or final strain values. The transient stresses can be compared with the strength envelope of intact rock and thereby estimate the core damage potential. Technically, the developed code fulfilled all the objectives, and the numerical error was found to be less than 5%. The basic idea can be applied also for different overcoring probes with minor modifications and recalculation of stress tensors. The analysed case studies showed clearly the advance of having an objective and practical quality control method to study the reliability of the in situ stress measurement data. The study was set up and funded by the nuclear waste management companies Posiva Oy ( Finland ) and Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB ( Sweden ). La solution se fonde sur une superposition de contraintes élastiques. Les contraintes mesurées peuvent être comparées avec celles calculées pour vérifier si le comportement passager mesuré correspond à l'état de contrainte in situ interprété. Sinon, l'état de contrainte in situ peut être calculé à partir de n'importe quelle valeur de contrainte passagère ou finale. Technisch erkannte der entwickelte Code alle Ziele und hat gefunden, dass die numerische Fehler weniger als 5 % waren. Grundsätzlich können auch verschiedene Überentkernen-Untersuchungen mit kleineren Modifizierungen und Wiederberechnung des Spannung-Tensors angewandt werden. Die analysierten Fallstudien zeigten deutlich den Fortschritt, objektive und praktische Qualitätskontrollmethode zu haben, die Zuverlässigkeit in Situ-Spannung-Messung-Daten zu studieren. BINARY and ternary alloys of iron, nickel and cobalt respond to annealing in a magnetic field by a characteristic change in the shape of their hysteresis 100p.l,2 An increase in retentivity and a decrease in coercive force produced by the magnetic treatment cause the hysteresis loop to approach the appearance of a rectangle. Materials with a rectangular hysteresis loop have made possible the contact-rectifier³ and have greatly improved the performance of pulse transformers4 and magnetic amplifiers." In the best material presently available for these applications, a 50 pct nickel-iron alloy," the desired characteristics are achieved by aligning the preferred crystallographic directions of magnetization along the rolling direction of the tape. The objective of the present study has been to produce rectangular hysteresis characteristics in materials with inherently high saturation. Iron-cobalt alloys, exhibiting saturation values up to 24,000 gausses' appeared to offer promise for the magnetic annealing technique, because they remain magnetic to very high temperatures,8 exhibit favorable magnetostriction properties: and show zero crystal energy at 42 pct cobalt.10 Among the ternary iron-cobalt-nickel alloys,7,11 response to heat treatment in a magnetic field is unfortunately limited to alloys having rather low saturation values.' It appeared interesting nevertheless, to study a series of compositions connecting the optimum composition (50/50) of the binary iron-cobalt system with the "Perminvar" composition (30 pct Fe, 25 pct Co, and 45 pct Ni). Very recently, R. Smoluchowski and R. W. Turner," have shown that under certain circumstances magnetic annealing can produce oriented recrystallization. Significant factors believed to be responsible for tailings dam failure which can lead to loss of lives, destruction of properties and assets or damage to the environment are the mechanics of material characteristics and static liquefaction. It is therefore essential to understand the tendency for the likely occurrence of liquefaction in tailings dam as well as mechanics behind the behaviour of this tailing materials (inevitable products of ore mining, mineral and metallurgical processes). This study aims to present the mechanical behaviour and susceptibility to liquefaction of a gold tailings sample. Series of oedometer tests were conducted to determine the compression behaviour and the possibility of transitional behaviour or not. Index and physical tests were conducted to determine engineering grading descriptors which was directly linked to compression behaviour and comparisons made with other tailings. Microstructure was studied to understand the effects of fabric on the behaviour of samples and the chemical composition and mineralogy were also investigated. The compression paths slowly converge and the gold tailings might be said to be less transitional. The gold tailing is less dependent on initial state. The loosest gold tailing is more susceptible to liquefaction and compared to other gold tailings, this sample is less susceptible to liquefaction.

Generally, production planning is concerned with the best use of fixed resources to determine a production schedule for one or more production units supplying one or more markets. Production scheduling determines when each production unit will be used and its production level. However, the production scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of existing or new production units and processing facilities. Normally, mine location allows only a limited choice; processing plant types and locations are considerably more flexible. This paper presents a generalized multiperiod MIP model as an aid in determining the mine production schedule and the processing plant types and location to satisfy multiple markets. A brief description of MIP and how it has been applied in the mineral and other industries is discussed. A complete description of the model with an application to a coal preparation plant system is presented.

Bureau of Mines studies show than an electronic counter can be used for determining just concentrations from midget impinger samples collected in bituminous coal mines. A sample correlation coefficient of 0.91 for data obtained using the electronic counter and the Bureau of Mines microprojector procedures indicates a significant linear relationship between the methods. The electronic counter provides better counting precision and reduces analytical time.

An amphoteric collector was tested for dolomite removal from phosphate ore. The effects of some operating parameters and their significance on the flotation of dolomite were studied using statistically designed experiments. The parameters studied were impeller speed, pH and collector dosage. Analysis of the results showed that pH is the most significant parameter. Moreover, a concentrate containing 0.53% MgO and ~31.1% P2O5 with a recovery of ~ 90% can be achieved at optimum values of studied parameters, i.e., a pH of 12, an impeller speed of 1,000 rpm and a collector dosage of 2.5 kg/t.

The ovienlalion of hexagonal a-zirconium crystals in cold-drawn Zircaloy-2 tubes and in both as-extruded and heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pcl ND tubes has been rrleasured using the inverse Pole - figure technique. Uniaxial tensile tests hare shown the Zil-caloy-2 lubes to hare highly anisotropic delovmation behavior whereas heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb tubes are nearly isotropic. The differences in deformation behavior are esbloilred from the observed textures of the tubes and the deformation systems known to oberate in Zircnloy,-3. Tlze vcsults lead to an explanation of the high effective strain observed fov the Zircaloy-2 tubes as colrzpared to heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb tubes in restrained end burst tests at 280° to 300°C. THE Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy. when heat-treated by quenching from temperatures slightly below the (a + p)/P phase boundary and subsequently aged at 500°C, has tensile strengths about 50 pct greater than those of 20 pct cold-worked Zircaloy-2.1 There is. therefore, considerable economic incentive to replace Zircaloy-2 with the heat-treated alloy in some in-reactor applications. notably for pressure tubes, where strength is a prime consideration. However, when tubes of Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb fabricated by extrusion and drawing prior to heat treatment were subjected to restrained end-burst tests at 300 °C. the circumferential expansion at failure1 was only 10 pct that of cold-drawn Zircaloy-2 tubes in similar tests,2 Table I. This result was not predicted from uniaxial tensile tests in which the ductilities of the two materials were quite similar.' The detailed requirement for ductility in pressure vessels has not yet been worked out. and comparison of the relative merits of cold-worked Zircaloy-2 and heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb is further complicated by the irradiation-induced loss of ductility and hydrogen pickup each will undergo from reactor operation.1,2 Nevertheless. the lower circumferential expansion of the Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb tubes raised serious doubts on the advisability of their use as pressure vessels. For this reason, an investigation to determine the cause for different ductilities of the two types of tubes was initiated.
