Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner's pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world's supply of the' material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity'of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.

In this study, the effects of milling time, chemical composition and heat treatment on microstructure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-Si (6.5-25 at.% Si) alloys prepared by mechanical alloying have been investigated. The results show that increasing the milling time or the Si content, decreases the lattice parameter and increases the internal microstrain. The prepared powders mainly consist of micron-sized particles with an average grain size of less than 20 nm. The specific saturation magnetization values are slightly less than those of single crystal or conventional Fe-Si alloys and decrease as Si content increases. The coercive force values of the nanocrystalline as-milled powders are much higher than those of corresponding Fe-Si bulk alloys with a minimum at 13.5 at.% Si. The values of coercive force decreased after annealing but it seams that the residual strain developed during milling is not the major contributing factor to the higher values of coercive force in the mechanically alloyed powders and nanocrystals behave as single-domain particles without exchange interaction between them.

The thermal field of a frozen rockmass surrounding an airway is often disturbed due to thermal interaction with mine ventilation air. Outside air entering an underground mine changes the parameters of the physical state of the surrounding medium. The variations in air temperature result in stress redistributions around a tunnel or mine working. This paper examines the influence of fluctuations in air temperature on stress distribution around an airway, and approaches are suggested to minimize the impact of temperature- stress on the stability of mine openings in far northern mines.

The processors of Florida phosphate rock face constraints similar to those of other mineral operations--leaner ore, more complex treatment schemes and a product which sells for a penny a pound. IMC Fertilizer is a dominant producer in this market with its current operation of five processing plants. An emphasis by their management in maintaining and improving plant performance has continued unabated for some 15 years. This has resulted in a commitment to the importance of routine automatic sampling of product and in process streams, the generation of reliable assay and size distribution data, the accurate measurement of process flows, and the computerized "rendering" of this information into weekly and monthly material balances which provide consistent measures of process performance. In addition, there has been a parallel program to monitor and improve the performance of flotation reagents and to evaluate process modifications or changes in equipment. This paper will describe the evaluation techniques that have evolved over this period and indicate how the historical data base is used to identify plant problems early and help in their solution.

The primary function of a support slurry is to provide stability during excavation. Today foundation structures can be designed around the additional friction afforded by the absence of the filter cake attributable to the use of polymeric fluids as support slurries. These fluids use pseudoplastic fluid viscosity to advantage over the fragile thixotropic gel structures of bentonite. Many of today's polymeric fluids are environmentally acceptable for disposal directly to municipal sewers.

Mg alloys for structural application have attracted much attention. However, high process cost and poor mechanical reliability are major concerns upon expanding the application to a wider area. In order to break through these barriers, better ductility is desired at lower temperature. Plastic anisotropy and peculiar twin formation appear to play key roles in the deformation and fracture mechanisms of Mg alloys. In the paper, dislocation slip and twin formation are reviewed. The effects of crystallographic texture and grain size are discussed. The results suggest that a good control of microstructure and texture can improve ductility and mechanical reliability of Mg alloys.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Antamina, Peru is the largest Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the world. Skarn mineralisation is focused around a multiphase Miocene intrusive complex comprising at least eight distinct phases identified by cross-cutting relationships, including truncated veins, xenoliths and chilled margins. Skarn alteration and mineralisation, as observed in drill core, remain open at depths exceeding 2.2 vertical kilometres.Porphyry intrusions occur as four major phases with subphases (from oldest to youngest): P1 (a, b), P2 (a, b), P3 (a, b) and two dykes of uncertain timing named Oscarina-1 and Oscarina-2. P1a is a hornblende-biotite quartz diorite porphyry with pervasive K-alteration, local endoskarn and 30–40 per cent sheeted quartz veins, all of which obscure original igneous textures. P1b dacite porphyry is a minor unit with <10 per cent phenocrysts and <3 per cent quartz veins. P1b cuts P1a; P2 dykes cut both units. P2a porphyritic biotite quartz monzonite contains K-feldspar megacrysts up to 4 cm long, local K-alteration and 2–80 per cent quartz stockwork veins. P2b biotite monzonite porphyry contains approximately 50 per cent phenocrysts and typically <10 per cent quartz veins. P3a (brown groundmass porphyry) and P3b (coarse phenocryst porphyry) are minor in volume and extent, and both cut P2 bodies. Oscarina dykes comprise two separate but parallel bodies. Oscarina-1 is a feldspar-phyric rhyolite porphyry, while Oscarina-2 is an intensely chloritised andesite porphyry. Oscarina-1 has a U-Pb (laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS)) age of 10.1 ± 0.1 Ma, whereas P2 U-Pb zircon ages (LA-ICP-MS) range from 10.0 ± 0.2 Ma to 9.9 ± 0.3 Ma.All the intrusive phases contain quartz veins, with P1a and P2a having the most intensive K-alteration and most abundant quartz veins ± endoskarns. Each phase may have contributed to mineralisation at the right depths and within favourable wall rocks (ie marble) during uplift of the Antamina structural block. Chemical analysis shows the partition of the magnesium addition between the metal and the graphite is independent of whether the graphite is in the form of nodules or flakes. The bright central spot observed in nodular graphite polished sections is shown to be due to the structure of the nodules. DURING the past few years numerous papers have been published on the production1-7 and heat treatment" of nodular cast irons. However, very little information is available on the structure of the nodules and the reason for their formation. It would appear that an explanation of the phenomenon of nodulation must await a detailed knowledge of the nature of the nodule. Disagreement exists among various workers on such a fundamental point as to whether or not a nodule actually contains a microscopically visible, nongraphitic nucleus.9-11 Work was initiated with a view to obtaining definite information on this and other aspects of the problem. Chemical Separation and Analysis Microscopic appearance had indicated9-11 that a nongraphitic core might exist in nodules (Fig. 1). It appeared that a chemical comparison of separated nodules and flake graphite would be profitable, for if the core is nongraphitic a relatively large amount of certain elements would be found in the nodules as compared to the flake. This comparison could best be made by obtaining nodules and flake from the same melt of cast iron, part of which had been in-noculated with a suitable addition reagent for the formation of nodules. A 300 lb melt was produced. About half of this was innoculated in the ladle with an Fe-Si-Mg alloy to produce nodules and cast into keel blocks; the remaining half of the melt had silicon added in an effort to compensate for the silicon in the innoculant used in the other half of the melt and this was cast into similar keel blocks. The analyses of the resultant irons are given in Table I. Nodules and flake were chemically extracted from 2 kg samples of metal as described in the appendix. While this method dissolved the iron and chromium carbides, it did not dissolve the titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum carbides. These latter carbides could have been removed by nitric acid, but in other experiments it was found that it attacked pools of metallic iron entrapped in the nodules which had, until the nitric acid treatment, been protected from the attack of the sulphuric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric acids. It will be shown in the next section that entrapped iron exists in nodules but not in flake. On microscopic examination many tiny irregular particles were observed to accompany both the nodules and the flake. These were identified by tabling a sample of nodules from which a sufficient fraction was obtained for X-ray analysis. A good pattern of titanium carbide was obtained indicating that this was the predominant compound present. Since it was not possible to determine how completely the carbides could be removed mechanically and since their removal from flake is much more difficult, it was decided not to resort to any separation as this would render further comparisons more difficult. "With energy costs increasing and ore grades diminishing, the role of preconcentration in hard-rock mining operations has gained greater interest. Dense medium separation is a process that can be conducted at particle sizes from 250 to 0.50 mm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the valuable minerals. Pilot-plant case studies conducted at the SGS Lakefield site are presented, including mineral systems such as spodumene, sulfide-bearing gold ores, and complex sulfide ores. These case studies demonstrate that, for amenable ores, mass rejection of 20–60% is possible while maintaining recoveries of greater than 90%.RÉSUMÉ Au vu de la hausse des coûts liés à l’énergie et du déclin de la teneur des minerais, le rôle de la préconcentration dans les exploitations minières en roche dure présente un intérêt croissant. Preconcentration has been practiced in the industry for many years, and is gaining greater interest as the industry copes with processing lower grade, more difficult ores, which typically require finer grind sizes and incur higher energy costs.The benefits of preconcentration are:• lower mining costs, which allows for nonselective mining;• lower process capital and operating costs (e.g., resulting from reduced grinding, flotation, and fines disposal stages);• increased ore reserves, which provides the potential to treat lower grade ore;• increased mine production without expansion of the existing plant or concentrator;• reduced overall tailings impoundment by converting the reject into a byproduct (e.g., underground backfill or aggregate);• improved efficiency of downstream processes (e.g., silica removal in electric arc furnace feed, removal of softer sliming minerals prior to grinding);• potential application to brownfield operations and greenfield projects; and• a “green” process option, which reduces processing energy consumption;– reduces mill feed;– increases stage metal recovery (higher grade feed);– increases mill metal output per tonne processed;– reduces surface plant, tailings dump, and tailings pond requirements because the plant has a small footprint and can be installed underground; and– can be applied to retreatment of old tailings dumps to recover metal values and reduce environmental impacts (e.g., dissolved metal runoff, acid drainage)."

IN 1942 the outstanding characteristic of the petroleum industry was the multiplicity of war-induced distortions in virtually every segment of the business. So devastating was the success of the Nazi submarine campaign along the shores of the western Atlantic and on transoceanic routes that within six months after our entry into the war petroleum rationing was necessary in the East Coast area. The conquest of the Netherlands Indies by the Japanese three months after the opening of the war in the Pacific cut off our normal sources of rubber, and in our first year of war nationwide rationing of gasoline had to be invoked to conserve rubber-borne transportation facilities. Meanwhile the oil industry faced the imperative necessity for rapid expansion in the output of aviation gasoline and later accepted the vast responsibility for developing a new industry. synthetic rubber manufacture. Probably no other essentially peacetime industry has been forced to make so many complicated adjustments, yet its response to its wartime obligations has been nothing short of dramatic.

High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

"The overall goal of this study is to develop a suitable flow sheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. A total of 14 coal samples of different ranks were examined for REE concentration, and an anthracite coal sample with the highest REE concentration of more than 700 ppm in the coal ash was selected for REE extraction tests. This paper reports on the results of the experimental program completed in the first part of the study, which included hightemperature leaching with nitric acid followed by solvent extraction tests using various organic extractants, namely, tributyl phosphate, Cyanex 572, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and their combinations. A 4×2×2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of 32 high-temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity at four levels, solids content at two levels and leaching time at two levels. The highest recovery rates of 90 percent for light rare earth elements (LREEs) and 94 percent for heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) were obtained from the optimum leaching test conditions while maintaining impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40 percent. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant in this solvent extraction test series, providing an REE recovery rate of nearly 99 percent.IntroductionGlobal demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and other strategic metals is increasing rapidly due to their use in a variety of advanced technological applications, with more than 100 kt of rare earth oxides used worldwide on an annual basis. The United States has less than 10 percent of the world reserves of REE mineral deposits, and in 2013 imported more than 60 percent of its rare earth oxides from other countries, mainly China (United States Geological Survey, 2017). China’s institution of export quotas has significantly reduced supply to the United States, raising the urgency of finding new ways of producing REEs and/ or substitutes. Coal combustion byproducts, which are usually discarded as waste materials, are known to contain REEs in low concentrations that could be extracted with a suitable process flow sheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue, considering the short supply of rare earth minerals and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the United States. More than 110 Mt of coal combustion byproducts are produced annually in the process of satisfying the country’s need for electricity (American Coal Ash Association, 2016), and less than 50 percent of these byproducts are being successfully used in various applications, with the remainder dumped as waste materials in landfills and ash ponds."

(written discussion).-This paper reminds me that when I had an option on a Nevada mine, where the only orebodies assayed $4 gold, I went to San Francisco to learn the cost of putting broken ore in a 25-ft, vein on the mine cars, and sought Mr. Alfred Wartenweiler, who said "There is not a mine in California that can tell what it costs to move ore in the stopes." When building small mills in the mountains, and with only 30 or 40 employees, by entering in a log at night the work performed by each man, I have been able to plot the costs with the accuracy shown in this paper, and very good discipline it is. Cost of new construction and repairs is carefully kept by most companies, and is compiled after completion; probably the outlay of labor and material in pieces of work sufficiently important to call for blueprints is estimated beforehand, but numberless odd jobs of construction and repairs are so itemized. . Might it not be worth while, at a large plant, to have these smaller daily tasks described in advance in a central repair office, and then let inspectors look over the job, report time and material needed, and enter it in sufficient detail in proper ledgers, the men then being sent to accomplish it, and reporting when finished? The forecasts would soon be made quickly and correctly and would give the head mechanic, carpenter, and electrician easy supervision of their men, and the results could be seen at a glance by the managers.

The Federal Bureau of Mines contacted 29 organizations--mine maintenance departments and equipment manufacturers--concerning service experience and construction of diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers. Scrubbers are used primarily on mobile diesel-powered mining equipment subject to 30 CFR 36. Because the scrubbers cool exhaust gas and act as flame arresters, their failure would compromise safety in underground mines. Scrubber maintenance problems and frequency and modes of failure were identified, and construction materials and techniques were evaluated. Three failed scrubbers were randomly selected from two cooperating mines, and their modes of failure were determined. In conjunction with failure analyses, mine water and scrubber water solution samples were chemically analyzed to characterize corrosive properties. Sludge and mineral deposits and different types of corrosion and metal fatigue were identified as problems leading to scrubber failure. The corrosion process is explained; maintenance practices, construction materials, and manufacturing methods that could be used to reduce premature failures and allow longer effective scrubber life are identified; and basic changes in scrubber design are suggested. If type 304 stainless steel is used throughout the scrubber and regular maintenance is performed, long, dependable service can be expected. Other materials such as 304L, 316, or other more exotic steel alloys may be necessary under certain conditions.

Zinc oxide activities in a typical lead blast furnace slag have been calculated from plant operating data. These activities were used to assess the probable effect of fuel composition, oxygen enrichment, and air preheating on the efficiency and capacity of the slag-fuming operation. THE physical chemistry of zinc fuming has been examined with three objectives in mind: 1—to predict conditions favorable to increasing furnace capacity, 2—to predict the changes required to fume zinc more economically, and 3—to explain reported differences in the efficiencies of various slag-fuming plants. This study, made at ail in the plants and laboratories of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., developed from a program undertaken some three years ago on behalf of the AIME Extractive Metallurgy Div. subcommittee on slag fuming. Lead metallurgists first became interested in the recovery of zinc from lead blast furnace slags in 1905 and 1906. An excellent review of the early experimental work has been made by Courtney,' who described blast furnace, reverberatory furnace, and converter methods of fuming zinc from slag. Some of the investigators did not appreciate the importance of reducing the zinc oxide content of the slag to metal in order to fume it, since they tried compressed air blast without fuel in their earliest attempts. However, by 1908, the importance of reducing the zinc was established.' In 1925, the Waelz process for the recovery of zinc oxide from oxidized zinc ores was developed in Germany.' This process was not readily adaptable to lead blast furnace slags because of the difficulty in handling fusible charges in a kiln. What appears to have been the first slag-fuming operation as it is known was commenced by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at East Helena, Mont. in 1927." The first Trail furnace was completed in 1930, and this was followed by the construction of several other slag-fuming plants. During the period in which slag fuming has been extensively employed, little development of the chemistry of this process as a whole has taken place. Several good papers on the petrography of lead blast furnace slags have been published,""= but these studies could do little more than establish the forms in which lead and zinc occur in the initial charge and final products of the slag-fuming operation. In recent years, zinc-smelting problems have been ap- proached from a thermodynamic point of view. Maier has published an excellent thermodynamic treatment of zinc smelting." The important thermodynamic properties of zinc and its compounds have been determined and checked by other investigators.' However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, no thermodynamic treatment of the fuming of zinc from slag has been published. A thermodynamic study of any process requires that the essential chemistry of that process be known. In slag fuming there appear to be some differences of opinion as to whether the active reducing agent is elemental carbon or carbon monoxide. Furthermore, some observers have noted that high volatile coals appear to be more efficient than low volatile coals, indicating that hydrogen is also an important factor in the reducing efficiency of a fuel. That both hydrogen and carbon monoxide are effective reducing agents for the zinc oxide content of lead blast furnace slags can be demonstrated readily by introducing these gases into a slag bath held in a neutral vessel at 2100°F (1150°C). Elemental carbon also will reduce zinc oxide, but it is improbable that much free carbon is available for reduction of zinc, as the reaction between the finely powdered coal and air should be largely completed before the solid coal particles reach the slag. Some large-scale fuming experiments using gaseous hydrocarbons have been carried out by other investigators, but, as far as is known, these have not been developed yet into operating processes. The thermodynamic treatment in this paper is based on the following reactions: 1—to supply the thermal requirements C+V2O2- CO [1] C + 0,-CO, [2] H2+ ~z0,-H,O 131 and 2—to reduce ZnO ZnO + CO + Zn + CO, c41 ZnO + H, e Zn + H,O. [51 The furnace-gas composition also is controlled by the equilibrium constant of the familiar water-gas reaction H,O + CO + CO, + H2. The trend for using larger equipment in open pit mining to achieve cost effectiveness raises the question about the optimum economic point of scale in the current world of globalization. The present paper treats this question through the prism of a new methodology of assessing the impact of the size of production equipment on the economic outcomes of coal mining ventures. The methodology incorporates a production scheduling optimization model that implements both principles of mine planning, coal quality optimization and waste deferment. The implementation of the waste deferment principle dealing with the spatial and time aspects of the mine sequence arrangement allows the adequate modeling of the optimality of production equipment scale through the use of mine investment parameters, such as, purchase and ownership costs and discounted cash flows analysis. A case study is provided to illustrate the applicability of the new methodology.

Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. This paper presents some relevant background information and a discussion of the latest version of the expert system being developed by the WTC.

Spatial and temporal temperature variations in a high-level radioactive waste repository drift can give rise to moisture transport within the drift. Knowledge of this moisture transport may be important to assessing the potential for corrosion of all metallic components in the drift. The model presented here shows one approach to simulating evaporation, transport, and condensation of water in large underground openings using a framework based on computational fluid dynamics. Simulation results that explicitly model water and latent heat transport are presented.

Mining in Western Australia places significant economic and environmental responsibility on Government and the mining industry. Groundwater abstraction is regulated by the Department of Water. The Department has recently issued a guideline for Pilbara mines, and this paper focuses on the Pilbara for its examples and studies. The guideline is intended to form the basis for developing a statewide policy, consistent with reporting and assessment policy.With rapid expansion of the mining industry between 2005 and 2008, the groundwater resources in the Pilbara region of the State are under increasing pressure. Significant new management and regulatory issues arising recently include: cumulative impact assessment; disposal of dewatering excess by discharge, sharing or reinjection; life-of-mine approvals and closure planning; closure water quality including metals concentration in pit lakes; and in situ leaching mining methods and their impacts on regional water resources (and change of State Government Policy with respect to uranium mining).

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.
