["Phosphate rock" is a broad term applied to natural deposits of minerals valued chiefly for their phosphorus content. More specifically, phosphate rock may be defined as a natural rock containing one or more phosphate minerals, usually calcium phosphate, of sufficient purity and in sufficient quantity to permit its use directly, or after beneficiation, in the manufacture of phosphorus-bearing products. The grade or quality of phosphate rock is expressed either in terms of its phosphorus oxide (P20S) content or the equivalent in tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(P04)2). "In 2005, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) commissioned a new silver electrorefining circuit. This circuit was intended to operate with a minimal electrolyte bleed for the control of copper. However, by the time of start-up, the levels of copper-rich silver doré to electrorefining had increased, and despite partial pyro-conversion in a small Top Blown Rotary Converter (TBRC), copper concentration in the silver anode still averaged 7.5%. This necessitated frequent replenishment of the electrolyte with fresh silver nitrate since copper displaced dissolved silver during electrolysis, and therefore requiring a robust copper bleed treatment step in order to maintain cathode silver flake purity at 99.99%. The originally-installed bleed treatment system could not meet the RCM’s needs. A thorough review of known technologies, however, did not indicate one capable of handling the copper load, and resulted, therefore, in the development of a novel copper hydrolysis approach for removal of copper as an insoluble basic nitrate salt, and recovery of the associated nitric acid for re-use in the circuit. Laboratory-scale trials showed reproducible results, and existing equipment was subsequently modified.INTRODUCTIONIn 2005, the introduction of a new silver electrorefining circuit at the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) initiated changes in the way customer silver, collected from the gold doré circuit, was processed. These circuit changes were discussed in a recent paper (Aprahamian, 2015). A wastewater treatment plant had not been budgeted at the time, and this represented a significant constraint when considering the introduction of a wet processing circuit. After a review of various options, a turnkey silver electrorefining circuit was purchased from a European firm. Initially, enough cells were ordered to produce 2 million oz of fine silver (999), with the option to increase to 5 million oz. The selected equipment was based on a Moebius cell design combined with a silver grain pressure dissolver to produce make-up silver nitrate solution. Additionally, an evaporator/hydrolysis unit included in the package appealed to the Mint Refinery, on the basis that it offered a simple way to bleed dissolved copper in electrolyte without generating effluent."

The North Shore Connector (NSC) project will extend the Allegheny County Port Authority?s Light Rail Transit System from downtown Pittsburgh below the Allegheny River to the North Shore via twin bore tunnels. Jet grouting, diaphragm walls, and soil mixing were selected as cost-effective technically viable ground improvement and support of excavation techniques. Jet grouting was specified to provide break-out (egress) and break-in (ingress) block sections at the tunnel boring machine (TBM) launching and receiving pits. Jet grout treatment was also used adjacent to buildings with shallow foundations and below retaining walls along the tunnel alignment. A new method for measuring jet grout column diameter based on electrical resistivity was employed on the project. New equipment was introduced in the U.S for constructing soil mix temporary support of excavation using a soil-mix technique termed Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) due to the use of two vertical cutting wheels that have evolved from diaphragm wall trench cutter technology. The system allows for continuous water tight soil mix panel construction including steel beams. This paper highlights some applications of jet grouting and various support of excavation systems (e.g. slurry walls, cement bentonite walls and CSM walls), including new innovative techniques (e.g. Cyljet and CSM) used under the constraints of an urban environment.

There is no better way of paying tribute to the memory of a scientist than by developing and carrying forward those ideas which he has contributed to science and which are for us the very essence of his immortality. For a lecturer who has not had the great privilege of stdying under Professor Howe or 'ven of knowing him in person, these ideas must be transmitted through the printed word. It is our great good fortune that Professor Howe left to us a rich heritage of publication, not only in his classic monograph on the "Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron" but in a wealth of earlier hooks and papers in the transactions of this Institute arid of other scientific and engineering bodies. An outstanding characteristic of this published record is the great breadth of interest and of vision which it portrays. His was riot a narrow specialization in only the scientific aspects of ferrous metallographg. On the contra1y many of his important contributions had to do with a far broader field of metallurgicial endeavor. He insisted that his students be well grounded in 1 he fundamentals underlying the whole field and not led into the narrow groove of specific applications. Among his first major publications we find papers on copper smelting, extraction of nickel, the efficiency of fans and blowers, thermic curves of blast furnaces, the cost, of coke, and the manufacture of steel. These are the papers of a metalhurgical engineer and it was among engineers that Henry Marion Howe made his early and well-merited reputation. These early engineering contributions display very clearly the strongly sctientific inclination of their author. The classic work on "The Metallurgy of Steel" published in 1890 contains a thorough and critical discussion of all that was known at the time concerning the alloys of iron and of what we would now call the physical metallurgy of steel. In addition it describes steel-making processes in use and some that had become obsolete, and points out in critical fashion the reasons for success and failure. Steel mill design and layout were included as well as some pertinent discussion of refractories. The book is indeed an embodiment of one of Howe's outstanding characteristics—breadth. It is both the science and the engineering of steel production as known in that day. One of Howe's earliest technical papers was entitled "What is Steel?" That was nearly seventy-five years ago when many new processes and new kinds of steel were being developed. The time was ripe for such a question and the answers which Howe was able to give were helpful in understanding the phenomena of heat treatment. Twenty-five years ago Professor Sauveur repeated the question as the title of the first Henry Marion Howe Memorial Lecture. It seemed to him that this question, "What is Steel?," had served as Howe's motto throughout the remainder of his life. Today I shall present for your consideration a question of another sort: "What is Sletallurgy?" Perhaps it is not too much to hope that in the answer we may obtain a clearer and possibly broader view of the nature of our science and our profession. The time is ripe for giving careful consideration to what we mean by metallurgy. If our Metals Branch is to become in fact an American institute of Metallurgical Engineers, it is essential that we understand what is meant by metallurgical engineering. I am convinced that the best interests of the profession have not been served by a narrow interpretation of these terms. We must now place emphasis on the breadth of metallurgy as a science and as an engineering profession. With its usual brevity and wit. Webster's dictionary definesmetallurgy as "the science and art of extracting metals from their ores, refining them and preparing them for use." I shall riot assume that the words "science" and "art" and "metal" are so well understood as to require no defining but others among our contemporaries are better qualified than either your lecturer or the dictionary to present the broad meanings of these terms. When we say that metallurgy is among the oldest of the arts we are not classing it with painting or sculpture or music but rather with the making of tools or weapons or the building of bridges or chariots or cathedrals. In short we are saying that metallurgy is among the oldest of the engineering professions. The question " What is metallurg ? " has been one of rather more than ordinary concern to those of us who have the task of developing a curriculum for the education of students in this field. This development has been going on in a number of universities over a period of some years. but there seems to be as yet no unanimity as to what such a curriculum should contain. O Alto Forno n° 2 é responsável por cerca de 40% da produção de gusa na CSN. Uma das principais utilidades responsável pela transformação do minério de ferro em gusa é o ar soprado que é fornecido por dois turbo sopradores da Central Termoelétrica n°2. Para que ocorra o processo de transformação do minério é necessário que o ar soprado seja aquecido. Isto é feito através dos regeneradores, os quais aquecem o ar para cerca de 1.300°C. Como cada regenerador tem um tempo de campanha, é necessário fazer a troca do mesmo a cada 1 hora. Nesse momento de mudança de regenerador, uma parte do ar soprado é desviado para o regenerador que está entrando em operação e ainda está vazio. Com isso, há uma perda pontual de produção indesejada, além de causar instabilidade no processo. A solução encontrada para reduzir este problema foi aumentar a vazão de sopro durante o período de troca de regeneradores, garantindo assim uma maior produção e melhor estabilidade do Alto Forno 2. Este trabalho apresenta o estudo do problema em questão, a metodologia utilizada para a sua implementação e os resultados alcançados.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

The method developed and used in this laboratory for the production of metallic uranium of such purity that it is ductile and can be cold-worked to fine wire or thin sheet by rolling has already been described1. It consists, briefly, in the electrolysis of potassium uranous fluoride (KUF5) in a molten bath composed of equal parts of sodium and calcium chlorides. The bath is contained in a graphite crucible, electrically heated to about 775° C., the crucible serving as the anode for electrolysis. The uranium deposits in finely divided form mixed with salts upon a molybdenum cathode suspended axially in the crucible. Upon completion of the electrolysis the cathode is removed and cooled, the deposit broken and leached to remove salts. The metal powder is washed with water and dilute acetic acid and dried in vacuo to reduce oxidation. Suitable amounts are then prcssed into pellets and heated in vacuo by high-frequency induction, using a thoria crucible. The uranium melts and flows away from the pellet, leaving a shell, which is largely oxide. In general, this method produced a satisfactory metal, although at times tile uranium was not ductile. The investigations recorded here were made to find the cause of this embrittlement. It was known that the metal generally contained carbon, derived from disintegration of the graphitc crucible in which electrolysis is conducted, in amounts dependent upon the thoroughness of washing the metal powder. Accordingly, analyses of several samples, both ductile and brittle, were made by combustion and absorption of CO² in Ascarite, using air instead of oxygen to reduce the temperaturc and rate of oxidation. Several of these metals were made with special precautions to reduce carbon content. The results show no relationship between ductility and carbon content in the range investigated (Table 1). Microscopic examination of ductile and brittle metals disclosed the presence in the latter of an intergranular constituent, harder than the matrix and less easily oxidizable, which was absent from the ductile material. A gravimetric method for measuring rates of capillary rise in powders was explored. Methods to improve reproducibility and consistency of the results were investigated. In particular, the effects of particle size and packing uniformity were addressed. Studies of the wetting behavior of both spherical glass beads and irregularly shaped synthetic graphite particles by various organic liquids were carried out. Standardized procedures for bed preparation are described. The applicability of the Washburn equation for surface energy evaluation in such systems is discussed.

U.S. supply and demand data for petroleum and natural gas liquids, by States and regions, were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates arcs provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the petroleum and natural gas liquids industry that can be integrated into State, regional, and national energy balances by source, form, and consumer sectors, and used for determination of interstate and interregional energy flows. Tables 1-4 show the estimated total supply of petroleum available for consumption and the supply's distribution among the major consumer demand sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation). To obtain summary figures for the major proportion of refined products by States, individual tables were compiled for the six major products (tables 5-16). To enable comparison of petroleum data with those for other energy forms, conventional volumetric data in barrels were converted to their British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents. Interregional shipments of crude petroleum and theoretical flow patterns for petroleum products are shown in figures 1-4.

The wedge shape theory of the rock fragmentation range in bench blasting is presented according to the dynamic characteristics of rock fragmentation by blasting in open pit under the condition of hole-by-hole initiation. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to analyse the rock fragmentation mechanism. The rock mass stress contours, crack propagation and damage evolution of different moments were obtained. The results showed that the wedge shape theory of blasting is closer to the rock fragmentation in hole-by-hole blasting and is useful to the design and calculation of charge weight.CITATION:Yang, J, Chen, Z-Y, Yu, Q and Ren, G, 2015. Many writers, in discussing defects caused by oxidation and gassing of bronzes and red brasses advocate substantially the same cure for both. But from its nature, oxidation cannot take place if there is an excess of fuel in the furnace, while the gases absorbed by some alloys are products of incomplete combustion of the fuel. Hence the metal can be either oxidized or gassed, but it is doubtful whether these actions can take place simultaneously. Oxidation can be easily overcome by the use of deosidizers or it may be avoided by protecting the molten metal with suitable fluxes. Absorption of gascs is more difficult to overcome: the regulation of the air and fuel, so as to produce complete combustion, and the protection of the bath by mineral fluxes arc the most important factors. Gas expulsion, resulting in gas holes, porosity, unsoundness, and swollen or cauliflower-headed risers, is said to have several causes. One writer1 lists the most common causes in the order of their importance, as follows: Superheated metal, dirty or slaggy furnace conditions, using metals low in quality or those previously subjected to bad melting practice, poor grade of fuel, use of newly lined or damp ladles, indiscriminate mixing of scrap or illogical combinations of metal. Superheating the metal usually occurs when the heat is ready to be poured but for some reason must be held in the furnace. In this case, a careful furnace tender tries to avoid overheating the metal by keeping a mild fire; that is, a reducing fire which, unfortunately, results in gassing the metal. A dirty, slaggy furnace may result in gassing the metal by retarding the heating and prolonging the time necessary to bring the metal to the proper temperature, thereby increasing the chances of gassing in uncertain furnace atmosphere. It is doubtful whether rnetals of low quality have anything to do with gassing molten metal, except, possibly in the case of metals containing

"An experimental and numerical study of the horizontal Bridgman growth of pure succinonitrile (SCN) and of a succinonitrile-1.0 mol. % acetone alloy (SCN-1.0 mol. % ACE) has been performed. Experiments at growth rates of 0, 2 and 40 µmis were investigated. The solid/liquid interface was stable (non-dendritic and non-cellular); however, it was not flat. Rather, it was significantly distorted by the influence of convection in the melt and, for the growth cases, by the moving temperature boundary conditions along the ampoule. For the alloy, the interface was determined to be unstable at growth rates greater than 2.8 µmis, but stable for the no-growth and 2 µmis growth cases. When compared to the pure SCN interface, the alloy interface forms closer to the cold zone,· indicating that the melting temperature has been suppressed by the addition of the alloying element. Two-dimensional computer simulations were performed for the no-growth case for both the pure and alloy materials. These simulations indicate that a primary longitudinal convective cell is formed in the melt. The maximum magnitude of velocity was calculated to be 1.515 mmls for pure SCN and 1. 724 mm/s for the alloy. The interface shape predicted by the computer simulation agrees well with the experimentally determined shape for the pure SCN case. In ongoing work, numerical simulations of the process during growth conditions are being performed.IntroductionIncreasingly, advanced materials used in the aerospace, automotive, optics and electronics fields require low levels of defects and high levels of solute uniformity. Directional solidification by the Bridgman process is widely used for synthesis of these high-quality materials. During Bridgman crystal growth, heat and mass transfer by both thermal and solutal gradient-driven convection and diffusion influence the shape of the solid/liquid interface and dopant segregation levels, and hence, directly determine the final crystal quality. Key process parameters include the applied furnace temperature distribution and rate of translation, ampoule properties and furnace orientation."

THE problem of compensation for labour is probably the oldest and most complicated one in history. The wage that a man receives is possibly the most concrete thing he gets out of his job and, rightly or wrongly, is generally considered by him to be the most important item in connection with his daily work. How today workers in an equitable way has been the study of industrialists for many years, and a great number of ideas have been tried out in an effort to arrive at a reasonable solution of the question. The idea of establishing a measuring stick for various types of work has intrigued industrial management for a long time and, after considerable study, the principle of Job Evaluation has taken form unti1, at the present time, it is becoming increasingly useful to industry at large. Job evaluation is a plan which is used to determine the relative worth of occupations by means of arbitrary measuring scales. These scales are developed for individual industries and are generally 'tailor made' for each particular case. There are as yet no absolute methods of measuring the work done by human beings and, as a result, one has to depend on comparative values to arrive at conclusions. However, job evaluation has provided us with a basis of negotiation for wage rates which is more satisfactory than mere guess work or persona! opinion. It supplies a common ground for discussion which is understandable by all taking part and ensures that thinking with regard to wage setting is carried out along standard lines.

Designed by army engineers, the NX borehole camera provides the most economical method of subsurface exploration so far devised. Continuous cylindrical color photographs now reveal minor flaws in foundation bedrock not always disclosed by borehole samples. A unique projector transforms the photographs into true-to-scale images of three dimensions. ANEW milestone in the progress of photography and subsurface exploration was reached when the Chief of Army Engineers announced the development of the NX borehole camera. In obtaining continuous undistorted cylindrical color pictures of dry or water-filled borings the device surpasses all other cameras designed for photographing interior surfaces of pipes, wells, and conduits. The usefulness of the camera and the unique projector that comes with it are at once apparent. To the geological, mining, and civil engineer alike it signifies the end of guesswork with respect to underground conditions that have eluded identification by conventional core-drilling methods. To the medical profession it may well signal new progress in photo optics which could result in cylindrical color photographs supplementing the X-ray and existing photographic methods used in exploratory surgery. The pilot model of the camera has more than paid for itself as a result of its success in bringing to the surface at two dams information previously obtainable only by costly drilling of mansized boreholes for subsurface on-the-spot examination. Such bores cost as much as $200 per lineal foot as against $10 per ft for the conventional 3-in. or NX exploratory core borings from which the present invention derives its name. The NX camera can now photograph completely the interior surface of these borings. Research and development for the first camera and projection equipment were conducted by Engineering Research Associates, Division of Remington Rand, Inc., under the technical supervision of the Geology and Geophysics Branch, Office of the Chief of Army Engineers in Washington, in accordance with plans and specifications furnished by this branch. Subsequent modifications of the camera-lowering device, transporting equipment, and special field tools were made in the Corps of Engineers' Ohio River Division Laboratories in Cincinnati. The background of this development is interesting. Among the more difficult foundation problems involved in construction of concrete dams are those resulting from bedrock imperfections that escape disclosure by conventional exploration methods. Often these imperfections are of sufficient magnitude to introduce costly changes, especially when their presence is discovered only after foundation excavation is well in progress. Bedrock flaws most frequently camouflaged may be ruptures resulting from the enormous stresses to which rocks have been subjected, or they may be planes or zones of weakness related to chemical alteration and underground erosion. Obviously, detailed information on their location, dimensions, and structure is important, as these factors can affect the stability of a dam and the security of life and property downstream. Their discovery and appraisal entail extensive subsurface exploration. At present the most economical exploratory tool available to geologists and engineers is the small-diameter diamond core drill by means of which cores of the foundation bedrock are recovered for examination and testing. All too often, however, these samples fail to disclose minor foundation flaws that may be of major importance before a structure is completed. As a result, the small-diameter drillings are supplemented generally by more reliable but much more costly shafts, tunnels, or large-diameter calyx drill holes that permit the investigator to examine the foundation rocks in place. It was to reduce the number and cost of these expensive and time-consuming investigations, as well as to obtain more complete information on rock structure from the smaller borings, that the NX borehole camera was developed. That it has been eminently satisfactory in accomplishing that purpose is demonstrated by its success most recently at the Folsom dam, under construction on the American River, 23

An understanding of the origin of mineral deposits and their relationship to local and global geotectonics is essential if regional targets for mineral exploration are to be chosen. Volcanism, metamorphism and tectonism are especially significant for the origin and emplacement of mineral deposits, which, far from being fortuitous oddities of nature, occupy well defined positions within distinctive lithofacies. Thus, suggestions for mineral exploration targets can be made taking into consideration the position of 'fossil' convergent and divergent plate tectonic boundaries to indicate areas of specific types of mineralisation. To be borne in mind, though, that level of exposure, time and location of magma generation are all additional and important controlling factors. To further understand the importance of the above parameters, one must refer to the concept of paired metamorphic belts (Miyashiro 1973) which develop during an orognic cycle. These belts are generally constructed in such a way that an ophiolite type complex with metamorphic grades related to high pressure and moderate temperature regimes is flanked by an area of calc-alkaline volcanism and granitic activity with metamorphic grades within a region of high temperature and low pressure. The former situation is usually the seat of primary magmatic mineralisation, whereas the latter contains base metal. Deposits of acid plutonic and volcanic association. As will be seen later, this particular metamorphic-volcano-orogenic situation is well developed in some parts of New Zealand. For the present purpose a distribution of potential ores as related to plate tectonic processes is given below:a) Divergent plate boundaries: primary magmatic Ni-Cu, Pt,Cr, PeS2 and Cu, Pb,Zn in hot brines-hydrothermal environments Mn deposits.b) Convergent plate boundaries: stratabound Cu-Fb-Zn-Ag of felsic volcanogenic association. Porphyry eu-Au of island arc type, porphyry Cu-Mo of continental type. Cu, Au, Y, Sn, Hg, Sb of vein type and replacement lode related to granitic activity.c) Au of hydrothermal vein association, related to late dynamo-metamorphic events. By virtue of ocean floor spreading, regions of divergent plate boundaries are eventually juxtaposed or welded n to areas where plate collisions occur. This is then followed by partial melting due to various causes, just above the descending plate; thus creating a zone of acid to intermediate magmatism. The final picture is that of an orogenic zone with the paired metamorphic belts outlined above.

Vibration and air blast noise from blasting were evaluated during a research program sponsored by the US Bureau of Mines. Blast variables were studied wing small scale model (SCM) tests to evaluate specific variables as well as interactive effects, followed by experiments with production blasts at the surface coal mines. Experimental data showed that the primary variables affecting the ground vibration amplitude are the charge weight per delay and the length of delay interval. Blast variables having a significant effect on the overpressure amplitude include the charge weight per delay, the length of delay, burden and spacing, stemming amount and type, direction of initiation, charge depth, and amount of detonating cord and cover.

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. Percussive drills have been in commercial use for many decades. Until relatively recently there was little serious effort to analyze the stresses in such devices in any detail. Within the last few years such analyses have been developed and have been reported by a number of authors.1-4 We present here an investigation of the impact systems of a family of conventional down-hole drills with optimization the objective. We have assumed that maximum drilling speed was the quality most desired and that this was to be achieved within conventional practice. In fact the methods that are demonstrated in principle below can readily be adapted to other percussive devices, whether conventional or not, and to other constraints.
