As part of the I-94 North-South Corridor reconstruction program, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (department) is reconstructing the Mitchell Interchange in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Located on the south side of Milwaukee near Mitchell International Airport, The Mitchell Interchange interconnects I-94, I-43 and I-894. Reconstruction began in 2009 with the letting of the first advance contract for local crossroad bridge reconstruction. A second advance contract for construction of collector-distributer roads on each side of the I-94 mainline was completed in 2010. The main contract involving reconstruction of the core of the Mitchell Interchange was let in the summer of 2010, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012. The core contract includes construction of three cut and cover tunnels along two system interchange ramps. Construction of the three tunnel structures is on the critical construction path. The contract includes an interim contract completion date that requires the tunnels to be open to traffic by the end of 2011. A top down method of construction using drilled shaft secant piles for the sidewalls of the cut and cover tunnel structures was selected as the preferred structure type to address subsurface and construction schedule challenges. The department identified in pre bid coordination that no cost reduction incentives would be reviewed or accepted for changes in tunnel wall type. A major component of the tunnel structures requires the installation of 1,500, 4-foot diameter secant piles. This paper presents mitigation strategies to manage construction risks associated with the installation of the secant piles including; prequalification of the secant pile subcontractors, requirement for use of full depth temporary casing, a site specific quality control plan, specifying drilling equipment, and developing a geotechnical baseline report for this critical component of the Mitchell Interchange reconstruction project.

"For the production of partially composed metal matrix composites, namely discontinuous MMCs, using a casting· process, the interpenetrated phase composites with SiC particles were fabricated by pressureless iDfiltration using molten Al-Si alloys. This process is based on a wetting phenomenon, therefore, we discussed the technique based on the reactive wetting. The SiC particles coated by diluted water glass were sintered in a mullite Tammann tube and simultaneously infiltrated with molten Al-Si alloys in air at 1173~1573K. As for the improvement of the wettability between the SiC and the liquid aluminum alloy, Fe3O 4 powder was mixed with the water glass due to the thermit reaction between Fe3O4 and molten aluminum alloy. In some experiments, pure aluminum powder was placed on the sintered SiC to increase the interfacial area and the chemical reaction between the sintered Sic. and the melt. By combining these conditions, we succeeded in the complete infiltration without pressure at 1173K.IntroductionAs is well known, the mechanical properties of metal matrix composites (abbreviated MMCs) are superior than that of ordinary metals. However, their use has not been widely accepted because the production cost is very high due to their poor machinability. Therefore, the production of partially composed, namely discontinuous MMCs, by as the Lanxide process [l,2] has been investigated for many years. The Lanxide process, it takes a long time, sometimes up to 10h, in a nitrogen atmosphere for the infiltration. Therefore, the cost will be higher for common use. On the other hand, a high 'pressure process has been adopted for the production of discontinuous MMCs by the Toyota Motor Corp.[3]."

The importance of measuring the temperature of molten steel in the open-hearth furnace has been recognized for many years. Poor temperature control may be costly to steelmaking operations and lead to a lowered quality of the steel. Low or excessive temperatures may shorten the life of the furnace, ladles and molds. Rates of reactions in the furnace and efficiencies of deoxidizers are known to change materially with a change in the temperature of the metal and slag. Ladle skulls and mold and stool stickers cause steel to be scrapped instead of being converted into useful products. Finally, the structure, segregation and surface condition of ingots are affected by the teeming temperature. Mill investigations of the effect of bath temperature upon steelmaking operations have been largely qualitative in character, based upon observations by practical melting men. The physical chemist has used the empirical information available and has reached reasonable and useful conclusions with respect to the various melting processes. The introduction of a reliable direct-reading pyrometer will permit accurate quantitative evaluation of the effects of temperature and should furnish a more rational basis for study of the thermochemistry of steelmaking. The problem is not merely one of making a small numbcr of temperature measurements in the open-hearth furnace. Adequate protectioil of thermocouples, which of necessity must be brought to the temperature of the bath, has generally resulted in a large, heavy assembly made up of brittle materials, unsuited for handling on the open-hearth floor. This paper is intended to deal merely with the commercial development of some of the principal non-metallic mineral resources in the three prairie provinces- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Coal is not included in this summary. Building Stone First and foremost, mention may be made of the building stone now being produced at Tyndall, Manitoba. This is a mottled limestone and is declared by experts to be one of the finest building stones in America, both as regards durability and appearance. It has been used very extensively both for exterior and interior work, not only in western Canada, but also in the principal cities as far east as Montreal. The stone is the "'Upper Mottled Limestone", which forms the summit of the Trenton (Ordovician) strata in the Lake Winnipeg basin. Quarries are at present being operated at Garson and Tyndall . The area where this stone is known to be available extends in a north and south direction for a distance of three miles, and the main productive ridge is probably about one half mile wide. The outlook for the future of the industry is extremely promising, as the stone is becoming increasingly popular in Eastern Canada, more particularly for interior work.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Steel was sampled after calcium treatment, to follow changes in inclusion composition during the processing of alumium-killed steel into continuously-cast billets, at Mittal Vereeniging. There is some shift in the distribution of inclusion compositions towards alumina, as the liquid steel moves from the ladle to the tundish. This shift may reflect some reoxidation. However, the effect on inclusion modification is small, since only a small fraction of the tundish oxide inclusions is fully solid?which agrees with the plant observation that these heats cast without clogging. Magnesium oxide in the inclusions contributes to liquid formation, substantially increasing the range of lime: alumina ratios over which the inclusions are partially or fully liquid.

Grain refinement is effective to enhance strength and ductility of metallic materials. However this advantage has not been utilized fully for magnesium alloys in industry because microstructure control through thermomechanical treatment is difficult owing to their poor deformability. The authors proposed a high-speed heavy-reduction rolling for production of Mg alloy sheets. It was found that the deformability is significantly improved at high speed and that the thickness can be reduced 60% by one-pass operation even at room temperature without fracture at the rolling speed higher than 1000 m/min. In this study, commercial AZ31B sheets were rolled at 2000 m/min between room temperature and 350°C, and quenched immediately after the rolling. The sheets rolled at 200°C show the finest recrystallized microstructure with the mean grain size of 2.2 Rm. They show outstanding mechanical properties with the tensile strength of 293 MPa, and the elongation of 25%. It is concluded that high-speed rolling is very advantageous for grain refinement and improvement in mechanical properties as well as deformability and productivity.

Melting has become a popular pre-treatment method for municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration residues in Japan. Although the method is effective in stabilizing the hazardous organic sub-stances such as dioxin, it concentrates the heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, and Cd in a newly formed fly ash (melting fly ash). Melting fly ash is classified as a hazardous waste because of the leaching potential of these heavy metals in landfill environment. Extraction and recovery of these metals seem to be more environmentally and economically attractive than disposing the material to landfill after immobilization process. This study proposes a Carrier-in-Pulp (CIP) method as a new hydrometallurgical route to reject and recover heavy metals from fly ash. In this method, a carrier material which recovers the extracted metals is added simultaneously with fly ash to leaching solutions and is harvested from the pulp by physical separation method like magnetic separation or sieving. To demonstrate the effect of CIP method, shaking flask experiments were conducted under various conditions using NaCl solution as lixiviant and iron powder or granular activated carbon as carrier materials. In the CIP method using iron powder, more than 97 wt% of Pb and Zn were extracted from the ash to the solution phase. However, the iron powder which was harvested from the pulp by magnetic separation, recovered only Pb (more than 94%) through cementation, leaving behind Zn ions in the solution phase. Due to this problem, granular activated carbon (GAC) was considered as an alternative carrier material. Single- and multi-metal adsorption experiments using granular activated carbon were conducted as a preliminary study. Around 85% Pb and 88% Zn were recovered by GAC in the single-metal adsorption experiment, while 60% Pb and 70% Zn in the multi-metal experiment. These results showed that activated carbon was superior to the iron powder since it was able to recover both Pb and Zn through adsorption. The leaching test conducted on the residue after the CIP-Fe treatment revealed that the solubilisation of Pb was successfully suppressed to meet landfilling guidelines.

The glass tube of spent fluorescent lamps is contaminated with mercury, which might be a serious hazard in the case of conventional recycling by melting with other glasses. A possible solution could be its incorporation into a clay body to fabricate common fired ceramics such as bricks and tiles. The objective of this work is to characterize a type of fluorescent lamp glass waste to be incorporated into a clayey ceramic. The characterization was performed in terms of wettability tests to evaluate the interaction between the surface of the clayey ceramic and glass waste as a function of the firing temperature. The results showed that the contact angle decreased with increasing temperature, reaching a value of 79°, at a temperature of 1100°C, but not sufficient to completely wet the ceramic. However, compatible chemical composition and reduction of porosity by the flow of soft glass waste between the clay particles favor the consolidation of the ceramics structure above 900°C.

Relatively pure crystalline lead sulfate (PbSO4) can be produced by chemical vapor transport from an impure source such as the lead-acid battery paste or the roast-ore-leach-residue from a hy¬drometallurgical process-route. In a closed-reactor, transport of matter is induced by a tempera¬ture-gradient and the steady-state transfer rate can be calculated using the data on the standard free energies of formation for the species present and the pertinent binary diffusion coefficients. The present work focusses on chemical vapor transport in a tubular reactor (1.4-cm inner diameter x 10-cm long) with the source- and deposition-ends held at 850°C (T,) and 750°C (Td), respectively; PbC12(g) is the 'solvent' or 'transport agent' and NiSO4(s) placed in the source-zone -serves to maintain a sufficiently high S0,-potential such that the stability of the lead sulfate species is ensured. For the purposes of analysis, the gas-phase in the reactor is assumed to consist of eight species: H2O, PbC12, SO3, SO2. O2 HO, C12, and PbC14. The reaction between C12(g) and PbSO4(s) in the high-temperature source-zone produces PbCl2, SO2, and 02; four more reaction-equilibria in the same zone yield other species. In the low-temperature deposition-zone, reaction equilibrium involving PbC12, H2O, and SO, leads to the nucleation and growth of PbSO4 crystals; three other reaction-equilibria occur in this zone. By employing the virtual equilibrium state for the end-zones and coupling it to the Stefan-Maxwell diffusion equations for each of the gas species, the respective partial pressures for these, in the source- and deposition-zones, are computed at steady-state. From these data, the molar fluxes of PbCl2. PbCl4, and so forth, are determined. Allowing for the transport-enhancing effects of thermal convection, the net transport rate of lead (or PbSO4) is duly calculated for specified initial conditions. The use of a woven wire-mesh screen as part of a flooded-bed dust-scrubbing system is very popular in the underground coal mining industry. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. The experiments were repeated on a reduced-scale model of the wire-mesh screen, and the pressure-velocity relationships obtained from the full-scale prototype experiments were tested. The test results show validation of the full-scale empirical formulas on the small-scale model with an insignificant variation. This paper presents the empirical equations for pressure drop across the wire-mesh screen in dry and wet conditions. Researchers can use these equations as a tool to predict total pressure drops for wire-mesh screens of different scale sizes.

Discussion of the paper of F. C. LANGENBERG and R. G. WEBBER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 291 to 300. HENRY M. HOWE, Bedford Hills, N. Y.-The results here given are of great interest and are welcome as forming another rivet to increase the stability of our present theories of the constitution and properties of steel. The important discovery is that the hysteresis increases with the fineness of the structure, that is to say with the extent of contact between the particles of ferrite and cementite. All of the specimens except No. 4 consist of ferrite and cementite of different degrees of intimacy of admixture. If hysteresis represents something akin to surface friction, which retards the rotation of the ferrite on the application and release of the magnetizing force, then it is only natural that it should increase as it does with the intimacy of admixture, because it is at the surface of contact of a given particle of ferrite with the neighboring particles of cementite that this friction is to be expected, and of course the extent of surface must in¬crease with the intimacy of admixture. The somewhat greater hardness of specimen 4 than of the others may perhaps he referred to the principle discussed in my paper, Why Does Lag Increase with the Temperature from Which Cooling Starts?' The furnace-cooled specimens were cooled so slowly that the influence of the initial temperature of heating is effaced. But in the air-cooled specimens we have the suggestion that the high temperature, 1,000°, from which the cooling of No. 4 started has prevented the completion of the transformation, with the result that the metal is slightly harder than any of the others. The difference is not to be explained by difference in the fineness of structure, because the whole range of fineness from No. 1 to No. 6 is accompanied by no change in hardness, the only change being an appreciable increase of hardness following the air cooling from 1,000°.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

This paper presents pile tension and compression load test results for the Southern Freeway Viaduct (North) pile load test site. The testing program represents a collaboration between California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Federal Highways Administration (FHWA), and a group of pile manufacturers and construction firms. The participating manufacturers included Fundex, Halliburton, Monotube, and Nicholson, with each firm supplying proprietary pile systems. The field test program measured and will allow the direct comparison of the tensile and compressive capacity of nine common and proprietary pile systems installed in nearly identical soil conditions. Data reported here-in details pile compression and tensile load-deformation measured at the pile head. Cursory data regarding pile installation details are included to aid in data interpretation.

A 0.3 pct C-12 pct Cr-6 pct Ni steel was rolled to 93 pct reduclion in area as austenite at 510°C, and then partially transformed as desired to ~rlartensite by qnenching to - 196°C. Pole figures for the austenitic matrix and for the martensitic product were separately determined by an X-ray transmission method. The deforitration texture of' the warm-worked austenite is characlerized by (110)(225) components, and is thus closely similar to those produced in a brasses. The pole jigure of the martensite in partially transformed material agrees well with that which can be constructed by transfortnation of the {110)(225) orientations according to either the Kuvdjuniov- Sacks or the Nishi-yatuu relatiotship. Howeuer, an important result of this construction is that me-third of the predicted orientations are missing. A graphical analysis can then be used to show that in deformed austenite certain crystallographic variants of martensite (related to the most probable austenite slip systems) are suppressed, resulting in this preferred transformation. The evidence for preferred transformation is corroborated by the measured elastic anisotropy of warm-rolled and fully transformed H-11 steel. EXTENSIVE plastic deformation of a polycrystal-line aggregate in a manner that causes flow predominantly in one direction results in a preferred orientation of the constituent crystallites. The particular orientations that are produced depend upon the crystal structure and composition of the material, as well as upon the temperature, mode, and degree of deformation; in any case, the preferred crystallo-graphic orientations, or textures, are reflected in directionality of mechanical properties. Although such anisotropy may be exploited in certain specialized applications, it is more commonly diminished or eliminated by heat treatment lest it interfere undesirably in subsequent forming operations or in structural design. In the recently developed thermomechanical treatments that significantly enhance the strength of some steels,1,2 considerable deformation of the metastable austenite prior to the martensite transformation is essential to the strengthening process. If the austenite is textured by the deformation, and if the transformation to martensite proceeds according to one of the relationships established for transformation in annealed austenite, then it must be expected that the martensite will also possess a preferred orientation even though the multiplicity of martensite orientations possible in a given austen- ite crystal will tend to restore some degree of randomness. The existence of a residual anisotropy, both mechanical 3-6 and crystallographic,' has been substantiated. In the latter crystallographic investigation, preferred orientations were determined for the martensitic structure of an SAE 4340 steel rolled 72 pct as austenite at 833°C and then quenched. However, the choice of a composition that transformed almost completely to martensite during the quench to room temperature did not permit direct measurement of the prior austenitic texture. In fact, when the "ideal orientations'' associated with well-known fcc rolling textures were converted, alone or in combination, to martensite according to the Kur-djumov-Sachs (K-s)' or Nishiyama8 relations, the agreement obtained with the observed martensite texture was only fair at best. Recently a pertinent aspect of the austenite to martensite transformation was reported by Bokros and parker,10 who found that certain habit-plane variants of martensite were suppressed by tensile deformation of Fe-31.7 Ni single crystals prior to the necessary subzero cooling. It might be anticipated that the consequences of such preferred transformation are sustained during the formation of martensite in warm-worked austenite that has a well-developed deformation texture. The present investigation was undertaken first to establish more firmly the relation between preferred orientations in plastically deformed austenite and in the resulting martensite, and second to examine the textures for evidence of deformation-induced preferred transformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES An alloy containing 0.3 pct C, 12 pct Cr, 6 pct Ni, and the balance iron, was selected because the mar-tensite-start temperature (M,) of about -100°C allowed convenient experimental manipulation of either austenite or martensite at room temperature. Furthermore, this composition can be readily deformed as metastable austenite at moderately elevated temperatures without intervention of appreciable isothermal or athermal decomposition products. The alloy was austenitized at 1150°C, aircooled to 510°C, rolled unidirectionally at this temperature to 93 pct reduction of cross-sectional area, and finally oil-quenched to room temperature. Partial transformation to martensite was accomplished by quenching to -196°C as needed. The rolled stock was reduced in thickness from 0.067 to 0.010 in. by etching in a solution of 5 pct HC1, 45 pct HNO3, and 50 pct water, and further thinned by careful mechanical polishing to maintain the two sides of the sheet parallel within 0.0003 in. Improving reaction effectiveness of asbestos tailings and acid is main means to increase the productivity of magnesium hydroxide and amorphous silica and to reduce production costs. In this paper, the process optimization of acid-leaching reaction process of asbestos tailings is reported. Through the orthogonal experiments of four influence factors, such as acid consumption, reaction temperature, reaction time and initial acid concentration in the leaching reaction. The experiment results indicated that the optimal process parameters were as follows: reaction temperature was 95?, reaction time was 1.5h, acid consumption was 218.9g hydrochloric acid(37%) per 100g asbestos tailings and initial acid concentration was about 25%. The influence significance sequence of the four factors was as follows: reaction temperature > reaction time > mass concentration of hydrochloric acid > hydrochloric acid consumption. Under the optimum process conditions, the leaching rate of MgO was 97.3%, total iron 98.15% and Al2O3 57.9%.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a method for identifying fine particles of beryl in mineral samples by preferentially staining the beryl grains. The sample is first subjected to a heated sodium hydroxide solution to etch the beryl particles, which are subsequently stained an intense blue color in a boiling alkaline solution of quinalizarin. Positive identification of beryl grains permits quantitative analyses by microscopic techniques. INTRODUCTION Beryl, a beryllium aluminum Silicate, is the principal ore mineral of beryllium. The only known commercial concentrations of this mineral are found in pegmatite dikes of granitic composition. Normally beryl is associated with muscovite mica, quartz, and the sodium-and potassium-bearing feldspars (orthoclase, microcline, and albite). Other beryllium-bearing minerals which are found occasionally in minor amounts with beryl are phenacite, a beryllium silicate, and chrysoberyl, a beryllium aluminate.

Both smith1 and wells2 have shown that the dif-fusivity of carbon in austenite increases rapidly with increasing carbon concentration. Smith has shown, in addition, that part but not all of this increase can be attributed to the concentration dependence of the activity coefficient of carbon in austenite. From the work of Eshelby', it is known that, because of the image displacements, there is a uniform dilatation of the material in a body containing random centers of dilatation. It is thus tempting to explain the enhanced diffusivity as resulting from this apparent negative pressure caused by the interstitial carbon atoms.* That is, the activation free energy for diffusion is not directly a function of concentration if we consider that the alloy is subjected to a concentration-dependent pressure. To proceed with a quantitative solution, it is necessary to determine the activation volume AV for the diffusion process. An exact calculation of AV is quite a difficult problem and does not appear to have been solved as yet. A simpler procedure is to use the semiempirical, macroscopic theory of seyes' which relates the activation free energy AG to AV. Keyes has shown that for many types of diffusion processes the following relationship is valid Where p is the Gruneisen constant and x the compressibility. This relationship is based on the assumption that AG can be identified with strain-energy terms. In general there will also be contributions to AG due to a change in the energy of the valence electrons of the metal; thus the relation must be considered largely empirical. Surprisingly, for self-diffusion where it is well-known that the electronic contribution is quite important,' the Keyes relation works quite well for many systems. For interstitial diffusion where it might be expected that the relationship is on a firmer theoretical basis, the limited experimental data available is not in particularly good agreement as can be seen from Table I. However, it must be remembered that besides the uncertain basis of the Keyes formula there is considerable uncertainty in some of the experimental values of AV. The only real justification for using the Keyes formula in the present analysis is that it gives a result which satisfactorily solves the problem at hand and, further, there are no more reliable procedures for calculating AV available. The coefficient 3 in Eq. [I] is determined such that the room-temperature value for x is to be used. The activation entropy AS is estimated as 8.95 x 10"3 kcal per OK mole using the values in Table I1 and the Zener" relation AS = PAHIT, where p is a dimensionless thermal coefficient of Young's modulus which is to be evaluated at low values of T/T,, aH is the activation enthalpy, and T, is the melting temperature of the alloy. The resulting value of AG at 1000°C is 25.6 kcal per mole. The Gruneisen constant (p = 3cup/XC,), where p is the density, is evaluated from the room-temperature data in Table I1 after calculating C, from the relation. A value of p = 8.32 g per cu cm based on the value of a. in Table I is used. The result is C, = 5.0 x lo6 erg per g, H = 2.32, and AV = 3.41 cu cm per mole at 1000°C and infinite carbon dilution. It is assumed that the activation volume is not a function of carbon concentration. The theory could be refined to consider AV a function of concentration, but due to the uncertainties in the parameters there seems little justification for this. Carbon dissolved in austenite forms a nonideal solid solution, so that in writing an equation for. the diffusivity of carbon it is necessary to take into account the change in activity coefficient with concentration. AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2.
