The f10wfield set up by the standard Hydro gas purging unit has been predicted by a numerical model. In addition turbulent trajectories of gas bubbles released from the rotor are predicted. Here the deposition rate of inclusions on the bubble surface is allowed to depend on local conditions. Bubbles passing regions with strong pressure gradients, such as close to the rotor, will experience large slip velocities and large deposition rates. This model can deal with any distribution of bubble sizes and inclusions. The results found from the multidimensional flow predictions are discussed in relation to what can be obtained from a much simpler metallurgical engineering approach. The differences between these two approaches to predict the same process will be discussed. The model predictions are compared to experimental results for removal of SiC-particles from aluminium.

Most metals are produced from minerals containing one or more of the desired metals, some contaminating metals, silicate, oxides, carbonates, and sulfides. Therefore, in the production of metals, there is generally a gaseous effluent in pyrometallurgical processes and a liquid effluent in hydrometallurgical processes. There are also solid residues such as waste ore, tailings, dust, and slag, created by the metal recovery processes. There are two important distinctions between the effluents and the residues: I. Effluents ? gases and liquids ? affect the neighboring environment for miles from the point of emission, while residues affect only the soil on which they are stored or dumped. 2. The environmental and economic effects of effluents are known and felt essentially immediately. By contrast, the environmental effects of the residues may not be known for a long time. For these reasons, the economic impact and the potential corrective actions required are very different for effluents and residues.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Both a graphical and an analytical technique are presented for calculating stream compositions and temperatures in adiabatic staged systems in which solids travel countercurrently to a gas stream. Such a system might be a tower containing several plates, on each of which the descending solid is fluidized by the rising gas stream. Examples are presented in which chemical reactions occur, including the oxidation of SO, by a solid catalyst and the gaseous reduction of iron oxides. COUNTERCURRENT staged processes involving reactions between solid and gas streams are becoming more common. These operations are generally carried out in a series of beds of fluidized solids, with each bed or "plate" acting as a stage. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of such a series of stages located in a column, down through which a solids stream moves from stage to stage counter to a rising gas stream. Typical reactions carried out in such systems are the dehydration of aluminum trihydrate, the calcining of limestone, and the gaseous reduction of iron oxides. Calculation of the performance of these counter-current systems rapidly becomes more complex with increases in the number of stages and in the number of chemical reactions occurring. Calcula-tional procedures for isothermal operations of such systems have been described.4 Actual tower operations, however, are generally adiabatic, and in consequence far from isothermal. The object here is to present both graphical and analytical techniques applicable to such adiabatic towers operating continuously and in steady state. In this introductory discussion, the graphical techniques presented are of the McCabe-Thiele type, rather than of the Pon-chon type. In all the examples presented, it will be assumed that both thermal and chemical equilibrium are attained in each bed. The assumption that the gas and solid streams leaving each bed are at the same temperature as the bed is in accordance with the familiar behavior of actual fluidized solid systems. Chemical equilibrium, on the other hand, is not necessarily attained in any given stage between these two streams, even with deep beds, since reaction rates may be slow. In the last section of this paper, discussion is presented of methods suitable for use when chemical equilibrium is not attained. The adiabatic tower in Fig. 1 has "n" stages numbered from 1 to n, starting with the bottom stage as number 1. In analyzing this tower's performance, it is important to express gas flow rates in terms of a key component or element which remains completely within the gas stream throughout the tower. Similarly, solid flow is best expressed in terms of a key compound or element which remains within the solid phase throughout the tower. Thus, in burning limestone with a hot flue gas, the gas flow might be expressed as G, the pound mols of nitrogen flowing through the tower per unit time, while solid flow might be expressed as S, the pound atoms of calcium in all forms in the solid stream per unit of time. Defined in this way, both G and S are constant throughout the tower. The enthalpy of the gas and solid streams are now best expressed in terms of these key components. That is, the gas stream enthalpy H is expressed as Btu in the total gas per mol of the key component in the gas. Similarly, the solids stream enthalpy h is expressed as Btu in the total solid stream per pound mol (or pound atom) of the key component in this stream.

In 1969, the number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry was lower than in any previous year and the number of nonfatal injuries was lower than in any preceding year except 1968. Fatal injuries in 1969 totaled 203 with frequency rates of 0.85 per million man-hours of worktime and 0.36 per million tons of coal These rates were new annual lows. Nonfatal injuries totaled 9,917 with frequency rates of 41.76 per million man-hours and 17.42 per million tons. The severity rate for fatal and nonfatal injuries combined was 7,359 days lost or charged per million man-hours. The average severity was 173 days lost or charged per injury. These statistics represent the injury experience of an average of 133,302 employees per day working an average of 225 days in 5,955 coal mines for a total of 237-5 million man-hours worked and a coal output of 565 2 million tons

Brown iron ore deposits in Quitman County , Ga . , were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Georgia , Department of Commerce , and the University of Alabama . Ninety- one holes were drilled , having an aggregate footage of 2,188 feet ; seventy- one holes penetrated 248 feet of iron mineralization . Average thickness of the ore zone was 3.5 feet under an average thickness of 14.7 feet of overburden . The drilling developed inferred reserves containing nearly 30 million long tons of crude ore with an average analysis of 28 percent iron plus minor quantities of manganese . Test work done by the Bureau on the crude ore samples indicated that they would upgrade by current log washer practice , with the use of a 1 /8 - inch screen , and yield 4.4 million dry long tons of concentrate with an average analysis of 52.1 percent iron plus manganese . The weight recovery obtained was 14.7 percent . Research studies made by the Bureau showed that the weight recovery would be increased by changing the screen size without any appreciable sacrifice of grade . The average weight recovery was increased to 18 percent with a 10 - mesh screen and 22.8 percent with a 20 - mesh screen . Screen tests studies indicated that there was no appreciable interlocking of the iron and manganese minerals and the clay and silica waste particles of the materials retained on a 200- mesh screen . Clay was prominent in micron - size slimes . Silica was deleterious in the minus 20 - mesh size .

Fuzzy logic is a useful tool for Sustainable Development (SD) decision making because it can express uncertainty, both in the informational and in the decision-making environment. The general linguistic definition, acceptability for environment (air, water, nature, risk, etc.), as well other aspects of sustainable development (health, management issues, etc) is proved to be useful in approximate reasoning and decision-making. According to this definition, the various fuzzy functions of environmental acceptability can be constructed. This construction is based on the concept of special kinds of fuzzy functions generally defined as Linguistic Variables (LV), which are suitable for mapping to fuzzy sets. Various SD indicators could be used as domains of such functions, expressed either in their physical values (e.g. production, emissions, risk of accidents) or in Measure of Preferences (MP). The most important MP are mentioned below: Stated Preferences Techniques (SPT) of economic evaluation of environment, economic instruments of environmental protection mostly based on Revealed Preference Techniques (RPT), preferences scales (ordinal, cardinal) according to various methods of their construction, etc. Also, the possibility theory (analogous to probability) could be exploited in such construction. It could be used together with environmental engineering modelling formulas for the purpose of determining fuzzy functions. The appropriate forms of linguistic variables, considering limit cases for this purpose, are also discussed.

The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.

An important phase in the Bureau of Mines investigation of electrical machines designed for operation in gassy coal mines is testing enclosures of electrical components for explosion-proof qualities. In brief, this testing consists of filling and surrounding the enclosure with an explosive atmosphere of methane and air and then igniting the atmosphere within the enclosure to determine (1) Whether the resulting explosion is confined without discharge of flame; (2) whether the enclosure walls are permanently distorted; and (3) whether excessive pressures are developed within the enclosure. Ordinarily, the pressures encountered in routine testing do not exceed 100 pounds per square inch gage. Hence, the designer of the machine does not have too much difficulty in taking corrective measures to prevent flame discharge and distortion of the enclosure. Occasionally, however, the explosion pressures greatly exceed 100 pounds. Then the goblet of the designer may not be solved so readily, From experience over the year 0, the testing personnel often can predict that certain construction will result in high. Pressures, but, only in a very general way, has it been possible to advise designers what modifications might be made to reduce the explosion pressures to normal values. For example, if high pressures were developed in a motor starter having a partition with an opening through it, some enlargement of the opening may appear to be the logical procedure, but it has not been- possible to give information concerning the exact amount the opening should be enlarged to prevent development of high pressures .

The incineration of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) is an attractive process for reducing the volume of the wastes and recovering their energetic value, which, however, requires to be strictly controlled in order to limit its impact on the environment. In this context, we have undertaken the mathematical modeling of the different sections of a typical incineration plant. The combustion of the waste bed, usually carried out on a moving grate, is at the core of the process. This paper presents the 2-dimensional, steady-state model that we have developed for simulating the MSW combustion. The model describes gas flow through the porous waste particle bed, the gas-solid reactions, conductive and radiative heat transfers, drying of the feed, its pyrolysis and the emission of volatile species, combustion of the pyrolysis gases, the formation of char and its gasification by water vapor and carbon dioxide, and the consequent reduction of the bed volume. Pyrolysis kinetics distinguish between cellulosic and non-cellulosic materials and are experimentally derived from our laboratory measurements. The calculated results give a deep insight into the various involved phenomena, an example being the complete consumption of oxygen in a large zone of the bed and the related appearance of a char gasification zone. The influence of various operating parameters, like the temperature and flow rate of primary air, is presented and explained. Finally, the effect of stirring the waste bed on the moving grate is also analyzed.

O projeto e a operação de estruturas que podem vir a conter trincas demandam estudos de integridade estrutural suportados por propriedades mecânicas à fadiga e à fratura advindas de ensaios experimentais (p. ex.: curvas J-R ou da/dN vs. ?K), sendo tais experimentos altamente dependentes da medição instantânea do tamanho da trinca. Essa medição em muitos casos é realizada com base na variação da flexibilidade com o crescimento do defeito. O objetivo do presente trabalho é validar experimentalmente soluções numéricas recentes de flexibilidade elástica que descrevem o tamanho instantâneo de uma trinca em corpos de prova de geometria C(T) e SE(B) incorporando efeitos tridimensionais. Ainda, objetiva comparar tais soluções com as disponíveis nas normas ASTM vigentes. Corpos de prova C(T) e SE(B) foram usinados conforme as referidas normas e testados em máquina universal de ensaios MTS 810.25. Na sequência, os dados obtidos foram convertidos em valores de flexibilidade normalizada (µ), determinando-se o tamanho de trinca (a) esperado com base nos referidos equacionamentos. As previsões de tamanho de trinca geradas foram comparadas com medições reais da profundidade de trinca obtidas de fractografias das amostras após separação final. No geral, tanto as soluções da ASTM como de Moreira (2014) foram consideradas acuradas e com erros máximos abaixo de ~ ±1,5%. No entanto, os resultados mostram equivalente aderência experimental das soluções disponíveis nas normas ASTM com as de Moreira (2014) para amostras C(T), mas melhor desempenho das propostas de Moreira para amostras SE(B) de variadas geometrias e profundidades de defeitos.

The basic work conducted by Prof. A.Yazawa has demonstrated that in order to ensure single-stage white metal production by autogenous smelting of copper sulfide raw materials, it is most favorable to use highly basic slags, in particular oxide systems CaO-FeO-Fe2O3-Sio2. he special studies have been conducted in the Gintsvetmet Institute to investigate the composition and structure of slags produced on a semi-commercial scale when testing the KFP and FBP processes for white metal smelting, as well as the slag obtained in a full-scale KFP furnace at the Almalyk copper smelter. The investigations conducted have demonstrated why production of high-grade matte or white metal is associated with lower loss of copper in slag in a series: silicate slag I silicate-calcium slag I ferrite-calcium slag.

The Bureau of Mines investigated northern New Jersey as a potential future source of yttrium and the rare-earth elements. The studies, consisting of geophysical surveying, sampling, and exploratory drilling, began in the spring of 1959. A total of three and one-half months were spent in the field collecting data. Thirty-three deposits were investigated, of which five demonstrated some potential resources of yttrium and rare-earth minerals. Results indicate that the deposits examined do not contain quantities of yttrium and the rare-earth elements recoverable under present economic conditions. Detailed studies conducted at the Scrub Oaks mine, near Dover, N. J., delineated a yttrium and rare-earth-bearing zone within the magnetite-hematite ore body that represents a potential low-grade deposit. Beneficiation studies on this deposit indicate that a final product, averaging 31.3 percent rare-earth oxides including yttrium, could be produced through amine and fatty acid flotation procedures with 77 percent recovery. Two hundred and eighty-five feet of diamond drill core was obtained from exploration studies conducted at the Bemco prospect in Sussex County. The deposit averages 2.30 percent rare-earth oxides (including yttrium), 0.45 percent uranium and 0.24 percent thorium. Low-grade deposits were identified at the Canfield phosphat2 mine and the Tanners Brook Monazite placers in Morris County, and the Marble Mountain prospect in Warren County.

The time-cost-risk analysis described herein was performed as part of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the feasibility of the program relative' to time and cost constraints, and to determine the probabilities of achieving various technological goals. A combination of standard program planning and analysis techniques were used to achieve these objectives. These included a critical path analysis, a resource allocation analysis, and a risk analysis.

They also draw on the work of two men in particular, Douglas Bray and William Byham, both of whom have contributed significantly to the understanding of supervisory development and training.IntroductionYears ago, there was not much training for supervisors. They worked under an authoritarian style of management and modelled themselves on it. They were generally selected for their skill as miners, mill operators or mechanics. Things have changed. Today, companies have different needs. The selection of supervisors is far too important to rely on guesswork. Progressive companies want supervisors who think like managers - supervisors who know how to plan and organize, set performance standards and monitor them, analyze problems, develop solutions, show sound judgment and deal effectively with people. The evaluation of these supervisory ""dimensions"" is best accomplished through the use of an assessment centre. The Assessment Centre Method increases the accuracy of predicting the future success of candidates being considered for promotion.Mining and other resource companies use assessment centres to select the most suitable people for supervision. The Assessment Centre Method is based on extensive research. It eliminates hit-and-miss selection methods by using several different exercises that simulate the problems and activities that candidates would face if they were promoted into supervision . In other words, they get a realistic "" sample"" of the supervisor's job and are required to deal with and manage interpersonal and problematic circumstances."

The Copper Range Company's mining properties are located in the Upper Penisula of Michigan. (Fig.). Early work indicated the presence of copper ore in a bedded deposit, confined to the base of the Upper Keweenawan Nonesuch shale, and exploitation of this deposit on a portion of the Company's property was undertaken by White Pine Copper Company. Diamond drilling of the White Pine orebody indicated that a major fault pattern terminated the values to the South-west. Further drilling Southwest of the fault zone proved a downward displacement of the ore bearing horizon some 1,500 feet and a lateral displacement of approximately 4,000 feet; and in this area an ore deposit was outlined in a large asymmetrical syncline locally plunging to the South-west. "This paper presents results of a study undertaken to determinethe feasibility of mining plains overburdens with bucket wheel excavators. Based on extensive geotechnical testing of overburdens under study, the relations between material geotechnical properties and its cuttability were defined. The properties with the highest correlations to the cuttability werethen used to develop the material diggability classification. This classification may be used for identification of overburdens and coals mineable by bucket wheel excavators.IntroductionLow cost of mining and high productivity can be achieved when mining unconsolidated soils and soft rocks with bucket wheel excavators. As a result this mining equipment will likely be introduced into plains coal mines. At present there are plans to use a bucketwheel excavator (BWE) in at least one mine by the end of this decade. Unfortunately, the performance of a BWE deteriorates rapidly with the increasing strength of mined material. To avoid costly misapplication, material diggability must be defined in advance of an application (i.e. the force required at the cutting edges of BWE buckets must be quantified). Correct definition of material diggability permits reliable selection of a BWE, or may indicate unsuitability of this equipment for a particular application.The reported studyu i was undertaken to investigate the diggability of typical prairie overburdens and thus provide a guidance for likely future applications of bucketwheel equipment. Investigations concentrated on the parts of overburden most likely to create problems for a BWE mining. These are defined in Table 1. At present, thin layers of the two investigated materials (samples K and L) are mined by a BWE in an oil sand mine, after being loosened by blasting."

If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.
