The extensive laboratory investigations were carried out in order to determinate behavior of sulphide and nonsulphide copper bearing particles during the flotation. The present ore sample were contained 0.55% Cu with 20.1% of nonsulphide copper in it and gangue material with higher contents of alumina about 19.07%. In this paper will be presented some results such as: effect of particle size, pH and applied collectors. The main goal was in application of collectors S-7518, as well as mixture of KEX and Z-96. Z-96 is a product from Chemical Industry Zupa Krusevac which was used as auxiliary collector in mixture with xanthates. The best results were done with this mixture in ratio KEX / Z-96 as 77/23 % in area of oxidized minerals flotation, but the collector S-7518 was achieved better results in sulphide mineral flotation. The S-7518 has better selectivity between copper minerals and pyrite comparing to mixture of KEX/Z-96 in mentioned optimal ratio. Flotation recovery and copper grade in concentrate were studied by flotation kinetics tests.

Before the present company was formed, in 1916, each group of mines comprising the old organizations made its detailed daily and monthly mine cost records along the lines used before the consolidation; that is, there was no attempt made to standardize and compare the stope costs of all mines. The general cost sheets for all mines, however, were standardized, and cumulative labor cost sheets were compiled in the general superintendent's office. At most of the mines, a daily record or distribution sheet for each working place was kept, showing the number of men, hours of drilling, hours of timbering, hours of tramming, cars of ore, cars of waste, sticks of powder and feet of fuse. This information was kept by each shift boss and entered on the distribution sheet by him or, at some mines, by a tram boss. The superintendent solved his own problems under the direction of the general superintendent, but without coming in touch with other superintendents, either through records or general conferences. Probably 95 per cent. of the stopes were square-set worked by day's pay; there were some back-filling and shrinkage stopes. Many of the development places, such as shaft sinking, station cutting, drifting and raises had always been run by contract. These contracts were given, for no definite period, at so much per linear foot and were measured monthly, or when completed, the men being paid monthly. In some cases, fairness to the employee was not maintained. On the whole, there was no standardization. There were no stope contracts, because of the objections of the Western Federation of Miners to general contracting in the mines. Changes in Stoping Methods Early in 1916, W. B. In 2001, 14,623 mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This was an increase of 210 mining operations compared to 2000. Almost half (49%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone (29%), coal (15%), nonmetal mines (5%), and metal mines (2%).

"INTRODUCTION During the 6-year period, 1940-45, 481,485,000 gross tons of iron ore was shipped from the Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin mines of the Lake Superior district. Approximately 367,000,000 tons, or 76 percent, of this ore was shipped from open-cut mines. The production of this large tonnage of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the Lake Superior district during the recent war was an outstanding achievement. It is questionable whether this record-breaking tonnage of iron ore, vitally needed for the successful prosecution of the war, could have been produced without the modern equipment and mining methods used in the district, The transportation of iron ore from the open-cut mines of the district is the most important phase of the mining cycle. Although some of the mines still use rail haulage advantageously, this method of haulage has been replaced at most nines with motor-truck haulage or a combination of motor-truck and belt-conveyor haulage.SCOPEThe transportation of iron ore in this report covers (1) power shovels, (2) rail haulage, (3) trucks, (4) belt conveyors, (5) shipping pockets, (6) accident statistics, and (7) safety rules pertaining to open-cut transporta¬tion. The purpose of the report is to discuss briefly and disseminate to the mining industry the modern methods, equipment, and safety practices used in transporting iron ore at the open-cut mines of the district.The 25 open-cut mines covered herein, located in the Marquette, Cuyuna, and Mesabi iron ranges of Michigan and Minnesota, shipped approximately 44,000,000 tons of iron in 1945, which amounted to 72 percent of the open-cut iron ore shipped from the Lake Superior district."

Jute fabric obtained from discarded sackcloth is a promising low cost and post-used material being considered as reinforcement of polymeric matrix composites. In particular, the combination of this fabric with a recycled plastic constitutes an environmentally correct composite with both economical and environmental advantages. The present work investigates the toughness of recycled polyethylene composites reinforced with up to 40 wt% of post-used jute fabric extracted from discarded sackcloth. Standard Izod notched specimens were impact tested and the results showed an increase in toughness with the amount of jute fabric. Observation of the composite fracture by SEM revealed that the fabric weave, in spite of damages caused by the previous use of the sackcloth, act as an effective obstacle to crack propagation.

The vapor pressure of indium has been measured by the torque-effusion technique, as a function of temperature between 1102o and 1422oK. For liquid indium, the vapor pressure (in atmospheres) can be represented by the equation -R In P = 5.782 x104/T - 25.29from 1000o to 1422oK. Extrapolation yields a calculated normal boiling point of 2329°K and a heat of vaporization at 298 oK of 58.09 kcal per mole by the third-law method and of 58.39 kcal per mole by the second-law method. Calculations indicate that the free-energy functions of Hultgren are to be preferred to those of Guruich. BECAUSE of the potential uses of liquid metals, it is important that convenient experimental methods be developed which will lead to a sufficient body of thermodynamic data so that reasonable estimates of properties of liquid metals can be made. Indium is particularly well-suited to investigation, since it remains liquid over a long temperature interval, it alloys readily, suitable containers for it are easily procured, and relatively few investigations of its thermodynamic properties in the region above 1000°K have been made. PREVIOUS RESEARCH The first determination of the vapor pressure of indium was made by Anderson,' using the Knudsen method and silica-lines stainless-steel cells. Kohlmeyer and spandau2 determined the normal boiling point, and a mass-spectroscopic investigation has been made by Lyubimov and Lyubitov.3 (Unfortunately, only an equation representing the data of the latter investigators has been available to us.) Hultgren et al.4 and Gurvich5 have published discordant tables of the free-energy functions for indium. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The torsion-effusion principle has been described amply in the literature.8,7 With this method, one observes the angular deflection induced by effusion of vapor from a multihole effusion cell which is suspended from a filament producing a small rotational restoring force. The pressure within the effusion cell can be computed from the relation ziaifiai where k is the torsion constant of the filament, 6 is the observed angular deflection, and ai, fi, and qi are the area, force factor, and moment arm of the ith effusion orifice. The force factor f is analogous to the Clausing factor,' and corrects for the reduction in effusive force attributable to the finite geometry of the effusion orifice. Schultz and Searcy' have tabulated the force factors for various tube geometries. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The physical arrangement employed in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The furnace elements are six Globar heat rods with 15-in. hot zones. Temperature is maintained to * 1°K by a Beck mechanism driving two 26-amp Powerstats in parallel. A Pt (Pt, Rh 10 pct) thermocouple serves as the sensing element. Four inner tubes act as vibration isolators; the air pressure required for maximum isolation was determined empirically, and is maintained by a solenoid valve. The tungsten fiber, 9 by 0.002 in., is joined to an 0.008-in. tungsten wire or graphite rod via a machined lightweight chuck.

Next year, in 1964, Butte will celebrate its Centennial. It was in May, 1864, that the first recorded mining activity took place. During that summer, several rich placers were found on Silver Bow Creek and its tributaries, and a gold rush followed. As placer mining proceeded in the creek beds, the quartz lodes on the hillsides were located and the veins were prospected. Mining in Butte entered its second phase when the rich silver mines, the Alice, Moulton, and Lexington, were opened. The silver boom lasted until the decline in the price of silver in the early 1890's forced the closure of many of the mines. An indication of the beginning of the copper mining era in Butte was in 1866 when it was noticed that green copper carbonate discolored some of the, lode material. It was not until ten years later, however, that the Anaconda and St. Lawrence claims were located by Michael and Ed Hickey. The claims were sold in 1880 to Marcus Daly and in 1881, Daly obtained financing and organized the Anaconda Silver Mining Company to exploit the vein The silver venture was a failure because of the predominance of copper which diluted the bullion to only 400 fine.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ(or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m).processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

"The piled raft foundation is a geotechnical composite construction method, consisting of three elements, piles, raft and soils, which is applied for the foundation in an increasing number. Differential settlements have numerous negative effects on a superstructure in piled raft foundations. Through the analysis of the production mechanism of differential settlements and differential settlements control measures, a method of adjusting pile configurations is presented to control differential settlements. By comparing the measured data and finite element method analysis of one oil storage piled raft foundation, the new method is verified that the differential settlements can be reduced effectively and the inner forces of foundations are more reasonable with varying length pile configurations. The differential settlements can be minimized or even reduced to zero with right pile length.INTRODUCTIONPiled raft foundations are widely adopted for the prominent advantage of limited settlements and adequate bearing capacities. However, there always exits differential settlements in conventional piled raft foundations. The differential settlement is the main cause that produces additional stresses in the structure. Differential settlements have numerous negative effects on a superstructure as well as on a foundation, and should be restricted to allowable limits. How to control the differential settlement is the key interest.An increasing number of structures are founded on piled rafts. For this reason, design strategies that enable an optimized design have a major importance for safety and economy. An optimized design may be defined as a design achieving maximum economy of the solution, that is minimum cost for the installation of the foundation."

In the routine examinatlion of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of non metallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-frec surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimen. such as tool metals c3o1ltaining various carbide and nitride phases. It, is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work. Procedure The specimen is flattened with considerablecare on a file or sharp cutting sanding belt, since the initial production of a flat surfacc greatly facilitatcs subscqucnt polishing. The polishing motors have two speed., 600 and 1200 r.p.111. ,It higher speeds specimens arc likely to he over-Ileated, therefore the high speed is used only when a saving of time is important. The main chemical constituents of waste cooking oil are higher fatty acid glycerides, which can be used to produce anionic fatty acids for most non-sulfide flotation. However, using the mixed fatty acids (MFA) produced by waste cooking oil as collectors directly, the flotation effect is usually not satisfactory, especially at lower temperature or room temperature. There are very rare systematic studies about the reason for poor flotation performance of waste cooking oil. This study aims to investigate the flotation and adsorption characteristic of different types of fatty acids in waste cooking oil to find out what kind of fatty acids results in the poor flotation performance. This will provide technical supports and theoretical guidance for the waste cooking oil application in the field of mineral processing. In this study, MFA were produced from the waste cooking oil, and then separated into saturated fatty acids (SFA) as well as unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), which possessing different flotation properties. The properties of the MFA, SFA and UFA were analyzed by iodine value, melting point measurement, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and quartz micro-flotation tests. The results showed that UFA was composed of fatty acids containing group—(CH=CH—CH2)n—, having an iodine value of up to 162.90, a melting point as low as -17.3 ? and stronger low-temperature floatability. In contrast, the SFA was made up with saturated fatty acids and a few oleic acids, with an iodine value of 48.97 and a melting point of 38.8 ?. SFA had shown poor collectability and required a flotation temperature higher than 35 ?. The results of zeta potential measurements, solution chemistry calculation and FT-IR spectra revealed that both UFA and SFA can be adsorbed on the quartz surface activated by CaCl2 via the chemical and hydrogen bonding. The reason MFA having a poor flotation performance is the SFA has an extremely high melting point which affecting the dissolution of the dispersion.

The analysis of equipment trends in AUSIMM?s Revision of Monograph 19; Australasian Mining and Metallurgy Operating Practices (AMMOP) in the paper by Dight et al (in press) raised some interesting and in parts disturbing trends in the Open Cut Mining Industry. According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics the US mining and petroleum industries? productivity is down by 12% since 2004 while the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the productivity of the Australian mining industry is down by 34% since 2001. In terms of open cut equipment median output for draglines is down by 15% since 2003; electric rope shovels are down by 41% since 2003; hydraulic excavators are down by 39% since 2008; front end loaders are down by 39% since 2007 and trucks are down by 41% since 2006. Clearly the boom has not been good for the efficiency of the mines. During this same time, best practice (defined as the average of the top 10% by annual output per unit of input) has declined but not by as much as the median (eg. shovels down by 8%, excavators down by 19% and FEL?s down by 5%). This paper will build on the analysis of AMMOP to understand the differences occurring between median and best practice and identify the factors contributing to the decline in performance. As the industry enters a period of potentially lower prices for commodities and reduced margins pressure will be brought to bear on mine sites to start moving more with the equipment they have. An understanding of where efficiency has been lost will be a key component in that. The information contained in AMMOP, and the subsequent analysis of that information in papers such as this one will be crucial to reversing the decline in open cut equipment performance.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced normally.

"The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company are planning to construct a permanent storage facility for high-level nuclear waste at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository relates to large fracture shear displacements, since these may damage intersected waste containers. Although details in fracture surface geometries are known to influence slip magnitudes and distributions, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties due to lack of relevant field-scale data and to limitations in available modelling tools. The purpose of the work described in this paper is to explore the possibilities to use the distinct element code 3DEC to generate and analyze models with isolated, non-planar fractures and, based on the results of such models, get perspectives on the influence of basic disturbances such as ridges, steps and waves. Given the model set-up, fracture segments with orientations deviating from the critical one will contribute to stabilize the fracture. As a result, all analyzed non-planar fractures slip less than the critically oriented planar fracture. We demonstrate that the angle of deviation is the most influential parameter determining the slip magnitude for comparable surface geometries. Similarly inclined steps and ridges have almost equal slip reductions despite differences in surface area restricting the movement. Although it may be possible to translate the influence of such irregularities to an effective coefficient of friction that could be used as input to models with idealized planar fractures, additional analyses with randomly shaped and distributed asperities, different fracture sizes and with alternative stress loads, need to be carried out to devise a defensible strategy for this type of parameter variation. INTRODUCTIONThe Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company’s (SKB) concept for deep geological storage of high-level nuclear waste is the KBS-3 method according to which the waste will be encapsulated in copper canisters and deposited, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, in vertical deposition holes at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock (SKB 2011). A site has been selected in the Forsmark area, which is located some 120 km north of the Swedish capital Stockholm. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository that has been identified by SKB (SKB 2011) is related to large shear displacements along repository host rock fractures induced by a nearby earthquake, since these may cause mechanical damage to intersected waste containers. Due to lack of relevant data at the appropriate field scale and to limitations in available modelling tools, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties. The standard numerical tool, 3DEC (Itasca 2013), used in SKB’s rock mechanics analyses, for example, generates planar fractures by default. Results from dynamic 3DEC earthquake-models (Fälth et al. 2010) currently provide input to layout decisions, i.e., the diameter of the smallest planar fractures that must be avoided when deciding on waste container positions at different distances from potential earthquake faults. It is, however, well known that fracture surfaces are rough or undulating on a wide range of scales (e.g., Candela et al. 2012) and that such deviations from planarity influence the mechanical behaviour of the fractures (e.g., Dieterich and Smith 2009, Marshall and Morris 2012, Ritz and Pollard 2012). It will probably never be a realistic option to attempt to represent the geometrical complexity of a population of fractures of different size, shape and surface structure in any large-scale rock mechanical analysis relevant for the performance assessments of the nuclear waste repository. This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large scale pillar collapses in South Africa were caused by weak partings which traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods to determine the strength of pillars are used namely, empirical equations derived from the back analyses of failed and stable cases and numerical modelling tools with an appropriate failure criteria. Both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercise that the results are not extrapolated beyond the range of the data which were used to derive them. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines) that has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value) to design the pillar layouts. Very few collapses have nevertheless been reported and it might even be too conservative an assumption of pillar strength in these mines. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many flawed assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is to study specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling currently provide a solid basis to conduct pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques be utilised when confronted with a pillar design to obtain the best possible insight into the problem.

The north central and northeastern states supply over 50 pct of the chemical and metallurgical limestone produced annually in the United States, and Ontario is the leading source of this material in Canada. About three fourths of the chemical and metallurgical stone produced in this area comes from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Ontario. The specifications, physical and especially chemical, for chemical and metallurgical stone depend upon the end use, but in general the tolerance for impurities is so low as to rule out most limestones and dolomites. Both high calcium limestone and dolomite are used in the metallurgical and chemical industries. The principal metallurgical use is as a flux in iron ore blast furnaces and open hearth steel furnaces. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, in making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. All deposits of high quality carbonate rock are definitely finite. Invariably and inevitably they diminish in either thickness or quality laterally so as to become unworkable as chemical and metallurgical stone. The size of these high quality lenses ranges from a few thousands of tons to hundreds of millions of tons. The best hunting for new supplies is in the geologic formations known to contain premium quality deposits. However, because of high transportation costs, carbonate rocks, to be workable, must be close to market, dollarwise. Definitions: Chemical stone is limestone or dolomite used as a raw material by the chemical industry. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. The specifications for chemical stone depend entirely upon the end product. Some uses require dolomite, some require high calcium limestone; in a few instances, notably in lime burning, either type of carbonate rock can be used as raw material. As a general rule, a fairly pure stone is necessary and for certain particular uses the tolerance for some elements such as sulfur, iron, and phosphorus may be extremely small. Metallurgical stone is used as a flux in furnace operations, especially in the blast furnace where iron ore is converted into pig iron and in the open hearth furnace where pig iron is made into steel. Either limestone or dolomite can be used in the blast furnace, but only high calcium stone is charged in the open hearth (except for rice-size dolomite used as a refractory). There are no rigid chemical specifications for blast furnace stone, but low silica, alumina, sulfur, and phosphorus are desirable. For open hearth use, in addition to low magnesia, a very low sulfur content is also specified by many furnace operators. For furnace use, fluxstone also must be sufficiently shatter resistant that it will remain in lump form during transport and charging into the furnace. Commercial stone is the term applied in the trade for crushed stone used for roadstone and in concrete aggregate. Many of our best chemical and metallurgical limestones are too soft to qualify in the Los Angeles abrasion test for use as commercial stone. However, some limestones, and a higher proportion of dolomites, do qualify for commercial stone and so can be sold to either market. Place Value: Even the highest grade limestone is still a bulk commodity with a relatively low value per ton. As a matter of fact there is very little difference in the average price per ton between high grade chemical and metallurgical stone and crushed limestone used commercially. Most high quality stone is produced in large operations with consequent low cost per ton whereas most commercial stone is produced in relatively small local quarries. As in the case of other bulk commodities most limestone buyers pay more for transporting the raw material than the cost of the stone at its source. For this reason steel furnaces and chemical plants
