A equipe da Coqueria identificou a possibilidade de reduzir o Burn Loss, que é a perda de material por queima durante o processo de coqueificação. Após uma série de estudos, utilizando a metodologia Seis Sigma, identificou-se oportunidades de melhorias operacionais que trariam mais eficiência, estabilidade operacional e consequente aumento na produção de coque e vapor, tais como: maior controle na admissão de ar, controle das perdas de coque e carvão, vedação dos fornos de coque e execução de paradas programadas específicas para Preservação Refratária, com foco na redução do back log e consequente prolongamento da vida útil das baterias de fornos de coque. A redução Burn Loss aumenta o rendimento coque/ carvão, com consequente redução do consumo específico de carvão e aumento na produção de coque e vapor. A implantação desse projeto permitiu a redução de 2,5 dólares por tonelada de aço produzida no Fiscal Year 16/17.

Two samples of iron enriched basalt (IEB) containing simulated nuclear fuel and having two distinct microstructures were prepared and tested for uranium recovery. The IEBs are refractory towards leaching by ground water. However, the uranium content (15.8%) is high enough that if aggressive leaching techniques are used for uranium recovery, these materials could be considered as man-made uranium ores. The IEBs discussed in this report were prepared to simulate Three Mile Island-2 core debris. The crushed IEBs were treated using three different methods simulating potential industrial scale processes. In one method the IEBs were fused with sodium hydroxide then the cooled mass leached first with water then with dilute sulfuric acid; about 52% of the uranium was recovered in this case. In the second method the IEBs were treated with a sulfuric acid/hydrogen peroxide lixiviant and about 13% of the uranium was recovered. In the third technique the IEBs were leached with a sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate/hydrogen peroxide solution. Only about 0.1% of the uranium was recovered. The results of these screening tests suggest that the IEBs can be successfully treated for recovery of the contained uranium. Other studies would be required to determine if other values, such as zirconium or silver, could be recovered from the IEBs.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft. elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 lb. pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 ½ miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in. Fig. 3.

ORIGINALLY the Babbitt experimental plant grinding circuit consisted of one rod mill 10 ½ ft diam by 12 ft long in open circuit followed by two ball mills 10 ½ ft diam* 12 ft long in parallel circuit. Shortly after operations commenced it was apparent that the rod mill could not function satisfactorily at the required 125 gross tons of ore per hr. Attempts to operate at this rate produced: 1) excessive tramp material over rod mill trommel screen which could not be handled in this open circuit and 2) excess build-up of coarse ore in the ball mill circuits because of inadequate rod mill grinding. Since Reserve Mining Co. ore must be ground to 85 pct -325 mesh to produce a satisfactory iron concentrate, an efficient and controlled grinding circuit is highly important. The first step in trying to resolve this grinding problem was to determine which unit of the circuit was actually in trouble and to what extent. A series of tests conducted at a lower tonnage rate of rod mill feed indicated that one ball mill could grind satisfactorily at rates up to 70 gross tons of rod mill feed per hr.

This paper introduces the technical characteristics, transformation scheme and production practice of the project in which Copper P-S Converter was replaced by Bottom Blowing Continuous converting for the first time, and introduces the technical achievements obtained by the project. The application practice proves that bottom blowing copper continuous converting technology can completely solve the problems of fugitive off-gas pollution in the ladle transportation, large amount of flue gas and fluctuation of flue gas caused by P-S converting. Comprehensive energy consumption and operating costs of producing blister copper, safety and environmental risks are greatly reduced, and economic, environmental and social benefits are significant. It is one of the preferred technologies for upgrade and to replace P-S converting technology. INTRODUCTION At present, more than 80% of copper production capacity is still using the P-S converting technology with a history of more than 100 years. During P-S converting process, melted copper matte needs to be transported by ladle, and it needs to rotate the furnace body several times, causing a lot of serious environmental and safety risks such as SO2 flue gas emission and low-altitude SO2 pollution. In addition, the high operating cost caused by low rate of air blowing, the short life of the refractory materials and high energy consumption during P-S converting become big problems. Other problems such as large amount of flue gas, low SO2 concentration, large fluctuation of flue gas volume and SO2 concentration, and discontinuous flue gas cause high cost of subsequent flue gas treatment are also needing to be solved. In order to solve these problems during the P-S converting, metallurgical engineer in various countries has spared a lot of efforts to develop continuous blowing process for decades. Native asphalt was produced by three companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm, R. L. White Co., Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Colorado and Utah, was mined by two firms, American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California), and Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) closed its mining operation during the year.

"It is well known that sites comprising of saturated loose sand undergoes large deformations, due to liquefaction, during seismic shaking. To cope with this, different mitigation techniques such as vibroflotation, deep dynamic compaction, compaction grouting, deep soil mixing etc. have been used in practice. However, as all these methods are costly, a new mitigation technique is required. Air injection has emerged as a new mitigation technique in which air is injected into the saturated loose sand. The introduced air makes the pore fluid mixture compressible and results into decrease in the generation of excess pore water pressure during seismic shaking. This paper reviews the laboratory and field studies performed to investigate the effect of air injection on liquefaction resistance. In addition to this, previous research in the direction of desaturation has evolved different techniques to generate gas in saturated sand. These techniques have also been discussed in the present paper. All the field and laboratory studies have shown that even a slight decrease in the degree of saturation increases the liquefaction resistance significantly.Keywords: desaturation, air injection, liquefaction resistance, pore pressureINTRODUCTIONEarthquake events in the past, caused liquefaction of loose saturated sands at many sites in the world. The consequence of liquefaction varied from small deformations to catastrophic failures such as flow slides, lateral spreading, sand boiling etc. (Kramer, 1996). To reduce the liquefaction potential of such soils, different mitigation techniques have emerged across the world. Some of the most widely used mitigation techniques are vibroflotation, deep dynamic compaction, compaction grouting and deep soil mixing (Idriss and Boulanger, 2008).Yoshimi et al. (1989) found that the liquefaction resistance of partially saturated sand is significantly higher than that of saturated loose sand. Further, Pietruszczak et al. (2003) proposed desaturation of the saturated loose sand as a new liquefaction mitigation technique. It is observed that the liquefaction resistance of sandy soil is enhanced significantly owing to the desaturation caused during construction of sand compaction piles (Ishihara et al. 2003). Over past few years research is being carried out on desaturation of sandy soil and its liquefaction resistance ( Ishihara et al. 2003; Okamura and Soga 2006; Yegian et al. 2006; Yegian et al. 2007; Takemura et al. 2009; Eseller-bayat et al. 2013; He et al. 2013; Marasini and Okamura 2015; Zeybek and Madabhushi 2016). As a result of this, different techniques of desaturation have also emerged. Different studies conducted in this direction and their outcome has been discussed in the section to follow."

The effect of the presence of fine particles of kaolinite and montmorillonite on the induction time for attachment of bubbles to particles of a copper concentrate rich in chalcopyrite was evaluated in this study. The results obtained from induction time measurements were correlated with data of concentrate recovery achieved from micro-flotation experiments. The effect of the presence of fine clays on the stability of air-water foams was also studied through measurements of the foam volume generated in a glass column under different conditions of air flowrate and MIBC concentrations. The experimental results showed that induction time values increased under the presence of fine clays. These data agreed with results obtained from micro-flotation experiments that showed that copper concentrate recovery decreased when clay particles were added. Although a complete explanation for these results is not available, the fact that experimental observations indicated that fine clay particles tend to adsorb on gas bubbles, suggests that the interactions between fine phyllosilicate particles and air bubbles have to be taken into account when studying the effect of clays on froth flotation. Foamability tests showed that the presence of fine clay particles increased the foam volumes only at high additions of clays and low dosages of MIBC. The results obtained at higher dosages of MIBC showed that the foam volumes decreased with the addition of clays under all the experimental conditions tested.

WHEN mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time. Manganese steel has been manufactured for about 26 years. .It was first made in a small way in England and subsequently produced in the United States in 1892. At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 lb. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 5 ½ in., which it is possible to treat successfully. Large castings are cored out to a minimum thickness of 5 ½ in., thus not only eliminating some of the internal stresses which are invariably set up in a very thick casting, but also reducing the weight and inertia of the piece, an

Large-scale land reclamation has been undertaken in Singapore since the 1960s. In the early years, the fill materials excavated from the hills. In recent years, sea sand is the main source of the fill materials. The contractors used to import the sea sand from the neighbouring countries such as Indonesia. However, in early 2000, the sea sand import from Indonesia and Malaysia was banned. Cambodia, Myanmar, and Philippine therefore became the alternative sources for sea sand. Distance between the jobsite and these countries is over 1,200 km, and transporting sea sand from these areas became a critical issue that could affect the contractor?s performance. Figuring out the right combination of transportation means for a longdistance sand transportation would be challenging because of uncertain situations. We developed a stochastic simulation model, using ARENA, to figure out the right quantity of small-size barges, bulk carriers, and loading/unloading equipment, which could help project managers yield the most production for sand transportation. This paper presents how we developed the simulation model, how it was applied to figure out the optimum combination among various size barges, different bulk carriers, and various types of loading/unloading equipment, for the sand transportation project in Singapore.

Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, and 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.

A liga de Níquel 718 é bastante requisitada para aplicações na indústria aeroespacial devido as suas excelentes propriedades. Endurecida por precipitação, a liga apresenta alta resistência mecânica sob condições extremas e ambientes severos, representando um avanço tecnológico significativo na produção de motores aeroespaciais. Os reparos realizados nos motores são feitos por diferentes processos, porém muitas vezes são realizados até que as especificações estruturais deixem de ser atendidas. Após os reparos, a liga é solubilizada em temperatura inferior a temperatura solvus da fase d, o que pode levar a precipitação crescente desta fase, podendo impactar nas propriedades da liga. O intuito do presente trabalho é avaliar o efeito de múltiplos ciclos de tratamentos térmicos de solubilização e envelhecimento na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas da liga. Foi possível observar que os múltiplos ciclos induzem uma crescente formação de fase d, reduzindo a resistência mecânica da liga.

Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.

"The soft coal in China has several issues, low permeability, high gas content and prone to gas outburst, making it difficult to drill and improve its permeability. Using the rock mass loading test, the relationship of stress-strain-permeability-time of sandstone was investigated. The fracture network that communicates with coal seams to provide the pathways for gas migration can be established by drilling, hydraulic fracturing or loose blasting in the roof and floor about 5m from coal seams top and bottom. The gas migration can be summed up as ""desorption-diffusion-two levels of seepage"" for gas drainage of the quasi-protection-layer in hard coal seams, and ""desorption-two levels of diffusion-seepage"" in soft coal seams. In the quasi-protection-layer, different gas drainage techniques were used during different stages of mining. Gas drainage of the quasi-protection-layers was demonstrated at Hebi Zhongtai Mining Co., Ltd. The results showed that the technique promotes the gas seepage flow, and improves the efficiency of drainage. The influence zone of the quasi-protection-layer was 1601 m2 and the average amount of gas drainage was 328m3/d, with the maximum being 661m3/d. INTRODUCTIONGas is one of the main factors that cause disasters and influence safety production in underground coal mines (SACMS, 2009). The coal-bearing formations in China have been subjected to multiphase tectonic stress field during the period of geological evolution. Coal body was often crushed into fragmented coals and mylonitic coals under the tectonic stresses (Su and Lin, 2009). The gas permeability of coal is generally poor. So in underground, drilling and hydro-fracturing technology have been used to improve the permeability of coal, such as intensive drilling, hydraulic punching, hydraulic cutting, hydraulic extrusion and deep hole blasting. But the gas drainage rate was low, only 23% (Liu, Li, and Li, 2006; Li and Wei, 2006; Henan Polytechnic University, 2008; Ma, et al., 2014; Lin and Wu, 2009; Zhou, et al., 2011) that was much lower than the rates achieved in the main coal-producing countries such as America and Australia whose average rate of gas drainage was 50%. The protection layer mining technology has been used widely as an effective technique to improve the permeability of coal in the mining of multiple coal seams (Cheng and Yu, 2003; Diaz and Gonzalez, 2007; Karacan, et al., 2007; Palchik, 2003; Latham, et al., 2013; Yuan, et al., 2013; Shi and Liu, 2007; Wang, et al., 2008, Guo, et al., 2015; Lu, et al., 2015; Slazak, Obracaj, and Swolkien, 2014 ). In the single low permeability coal seam, there is no protection layer. This kind of coal seam has low permeability, high gas content, soft coal body, and is prone to serious gas outbursts. During drilling, the holes very often spray, collapse, stuck and wedged the drilling tool. The hole length drilled is difficult to reach the required minimum, the service life of holes for gas drainage is short, the construction cost is high, and the holes are difficult to maintain. The gas drainage efficiency of single low permeability coal seam, especially soft coal seams, cannot be improved even though hydro-fracture technology has been implemented, because its permeability is not improved."

Deep Vibro Techniques namely Vibro Compaction (VC) and Vibro Replacement (VR) are widely used in ground improvement to densify sands and strengthen cohesive soils. This paper describes the application of these techniques for the construction of 20 Ha Iron Ore Stockpile Yard with the maximum stockpile height of 14 m in Quang Ngai, Vietnam. The challenges of this project are to limit the stockpile allowable settlement and the surrounding pile’s lateral movement. The soil condition can be summarized as 12m – 18m thick of loose to medium dense SAND with qc around 5-18MPa and followed by 2.0 – 6.0 m thick soft clay with qc around 0.4 – 0.8MPa. Localized very dense sand layer was found. VR using stone columns were installed in soft clay layer while VC was adopted to densify sand layer. Additional shallow stone columns were built in sand strata to minimize pile top lateral movement. The post construction performance was verified by a large 6 m by 12 m plate load test (PLT). The predicted PLT deformation using Priebe’s improved properties for the VR will be presented and compared with the measured plate load test results.

The object of this paper is to describe the electric equipment at the iron-ore mines of Penn Iron Mining Co., Vulcan, Mich. and of Republic Iron Co., Republic, Mich.; to give the results of tests; and to discuss the methods in use from an operating as well as from an efficiency standpoint. Electricity was introduced at the Penn mines for pumping, hoisting, and compressing air in the spring of 1907, upon the completion of a hydro-electric plant built by that company on the Menominee river about 4 miles from the mines. This plant was described in a paper1 presented before the Lake Superior Mining Institute. A paper2 presented at a meeting of the same Institute describes some of the operating features, and the safety devices of the electric hoist at the Curry shaft were briefly described in the Proceedings of the First Co-operative Safety Congress held under the auspices of the Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers at Milwaukee, Wis., Sept. 30 to Oct. 5, 1912. Generating PoweR Plants After the success of electrical operation was assured, a second set of water wheels and generator was installed at the falls, for which provision had been made in the original design and in the construction of the foundations, and later three additional wires were added to the main transmission line, doubling its capacity and reducing the line loss. The general conditions of this installation are particularly favorable for hydro-electric operation. In the neighborhood of three-fourths of the power used is for mine pumping, which in the main is regular and continuous. Research was done by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of a low-molecular-weight polymer on wet grinding of quartz, dolomite, and a copper ore. A 5-in ball mill equipped with a torque sensor for precise measurement of input energy was used for batch grinding tests. Grinding parameters were determined from size distribution data on the feed material and ground product. Zeta potential measurements were made to determine the effect of the polymer on the surface properties of the three materials, and a viscometer was used to measure the effect of the polymer on slurry viscosity. The addition of the polymer caused a sharp increase in the negative value of the zeta potential for all three materials, indicating that pronounced adsorption was taking place. At a constant slurry percent solids, addition of the polymer caused a similar reduction in slurry viscosity for each material. For quartz, dolomite, and the copper ore, grinding efficiency, as measured by kilogram of product per kilowatt hour passing a given screen size, was not affected by the addition of the polymer. However, the lowering in slurry viscosity caused by addi-tion of the polymer permits grinding at a higher slurry percent solids.
