The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren's mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. "Microwaves have the capability to heat up sulphides, especially clusters of particles of approx. 1 mm. Some sulphides absorb microwaves more readily than others. Molybdenite is especially effective in this regard, possibly due to its flaky nature and/or electrical conductivity. Even where it occurs in low concentrations in a deposit, individual rocks may be ore grade due to the high monetary value of MoS2. Such rocks often result from crushing mined veinlets or stockwork, or are contained in the cutoff grade fraction of ROM. Machine segregation of rocks high in MoS2 by infrared sensors after microwaving could therefore advantageously be used to upgrade lower grade ore between Mine and Mill. This would reduce the size of the latter, and thus its CAPEX and OPEX. Such upgrading could also yield shipping ore for a distant Mill, or extend ore reserves.Barrick Gold Corp. has been supporting the development of MW/IR sulphide sorting for the past three years. The results of MW/IR sorting work on molybdenite and other (pyritic) ore samples from a variety of sources are being presented here.INTRODUCTIONThis paper looks at mechanized, i.e. machine ore sorting technologies currently available and under development, and what conditions would be needed for the potential application of such ore sorting to sulphide mining and milling. Current machine sorting involves no-contact sensing technology for rocks, and signal processing after sensing to activate airblast segregation of certain rocks, normally the smallest mass to keep compressed air costs down.The forerunner of modern sorting is probably magnetic separation, which utilizes an inherent property of certain ores to divert it into mag and non-mags fractions. Radiometric ore sorters, which have been applied successfully for decades in the pre-concentration of uranium ores (Wotruba and Riedel, 2006) initiated modern sorting. In the 90’s, sensor-based machine sorting became a viable means of increasing the overall economic recovery of a resource. This technology became driven by the availability of low cost computing equipment and the concurrent development of algorithms, and by the availability of extremely fast response sensors and air actuators, allowing the sorting equipment to run faster, dropping the cost per tonne. It has been in industrial minerals processing that rock sorting has been most widely adopted, not really surprising. Liberation occurs on a different scale than in the base metal industry. Most industrial minerals are mined from massive deposits, requiring (in the past) no upgrading. Many of these operations now run into product contamination problems, which ore sorting can solve. One illustration: in Finland, a quarry is separating limestone from dolomite at 500 tonnes / hour, with individual rocks weighing up to 15 kg. Many of these industrial minerals operations have stockpiles of earlier discarded below-quality rocks, now being reprocessed with the help of ore sorting. The economics of this are very favourable, going from zero or negative value (stockpiles can not be left when closing the mine) to full product value for at least a portion of the stockpile. This suggests that in the future the economics of overburden sorting could become attractive under the right circumstances and such treatment could well become an integral part of open pit mine development."

The selection of the main mineralised zone (MMZ) concentrator milling circuit has followed a comprehensive route over the preceding 10 years. Many knowledgeable parties have contributed and assisted in developing the milling circuit according to the best available information. The final selection of the flow sheet was completed after DRA conducted a techno-economic study on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous (AG) milling. The results from all the above mentioned work indicated that it is possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding circuit. The flow sheet was designed to treat the main mineralised zone (MMZ) arising’s from both underground and open cast operations and incorporates a fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuit. Commissioning of the 375ktpm concentrator at Nkomati Nickel began in August 2009 with the first ore reporting to the mill on the 15th of September 2009.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

The effect of small solute additions of Cu on the activation energies for creep A1 single crystals were determined over the range from 78° to 850° K. Below 240°K and above 800°K activation energies were unchanged. Between 240°K and 400°K strain aging causes the creep rate to become vanishingly small and the flow stress was independent of the temperature. Between 500° and 50°K the activation energy was increased to 41,000 cal per mole. NUMEROUS investigationsL have shown that solid solution alloying invariably increases the flow stress. A typical example is documented in Fig. 1. Such increases in flow stress can arise from two general effects: Alloying can increase the long-range stress fields through which dislocations must move by causing appropriate clustering; modification of dislocation densities, and so forth. Alloying can also modify the short-range stress fields that determine the activation energies for thermally stimulated migration of dislocations, such as occurs in some solute atom pinning processes, and so forth. Actually both long- and short-range stress-field effects can occur simultaneously. It was the purpose of this investigation to evaluate the effect of alloying on the short-range stress fields by determining the effect of alloying on the activation energies for creep. The resulting observations also shed some light on the effect of long-range stress fields on dislocation processes. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Single-crystal bars (6 in. long 3/8 in. wide and l/4 in. thick) of dilute solutions of Cu in A1 were seeded, so as to provide extensive single slip, with the pole of the tensile axis located in the standard stereographic projection as shown in Fig. 2. Each crystal was grown under an argon atmosphere in a graphite mold containing a large reservoir of molten alloy for the purpose of obtaining rather uniform composition of Cu along the length of the bar. The nominal compositions of the alloys which were produced from 99.99 pct Cu and high-purity A1 containing 0.001 pct Fe and 0.001 pct Si, are given in Table I. Strains, measured by linear variable transformers attached by quartz rods to a 3 in. gage section were sensitive to and the stresses were ap- plied by direct loading of the specimen. Temperatures were determined by thermocouples attached to the gage section of the specimens. Below 400°K the apparent activation energies for creep, Q, were determined by the effect of small, rapid changes in temperature of about + 10°K from T1 to T2 on the corresponding creep rates ?1 and ?2 during primary creep according to where R is the gas constant.' Above 400°K, Q was evaluated from Eq. [1] for the secondary creep rate using temperature changes of about ±20K. A typical set of results is shown in Fig. 3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The previously obtained effect of temperature on the apparent activation energy for creep of single crystals of high-purity A12 is shown by the broken curve of Fig. 4. The datum points on the same graph illustrate the effect of dilute a solid solution alloying with Cu on the activation energy between 600" and 750°K. The concepts and some arguments about the emphasis to be placed on various aspects of open-pit design are discussed in this article.RocksROCK can be described as a granular material consisting of grains and glue. The grains may be fragments of other rocks or polycrystalline aggregates. The glue may be ferruginous, calcareous, argillaceous, siliceous or other material connecting the grains. In a crystal intergrowth, the outer layers of the crystals in contact with each other may be considered to act as a glue. Water may be a glue in clay or a grain in a crystal structure. Air and other fluids or gases are grains if they occupy spaces in a granular mass. Such grains are functional either chemically or mechanically or both."

The leaching behavior of palladium powder in aqueous solutions containing NaCI or N'H4Cl was investigated. Cupric ion was used as an oxidant for the dissolution reaction. The effect of a number of leaching parameters such as temperature, concentration, stirring speed and surface area on the leaching rate was studied. The leaching system containing chloride and cupric ion was found to be very effective for the dissolution of metallic palladium. Based on the experimental results the overall leaching rate was believed to be controlled by a chemical reaction step. The dissolution rate of palladium was found to be first order with respect to the concentration of cupric ion and second order with respect to the concentration of chloride.

Landmines are a great threat to military vehicles and their occupants. Mine blasts can completely destroy vehicles and kill all the occupants or disable the vehicle and leave the occupants severely injured. Injuries sustained during a landmine blast come from fragmentation that enters the vehicle through a hull breach, hot gasses expanding through the vehicle, or shock created from the extreme pressure of the blast (Lafrance, L.P. 1998). Mitigating the high acceleration experienced by the occupants during survivable mine blasts is the focus of the research being addressed in this paper. Method The objective of the project reported in this paper was to prove the feasibility that pneumatic seat technologies that employ light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seats and seat backs can be used to protect the crews of lightweight combat vehicles against the detrimental and injurious effects of mine blasts. This protection includes reducing the shock energy experienced by seated vehicle crews during mine blast initiation and at vehicle slam-down to below potentially injurious levels. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the proposed lightweight, foam-filled, inflatable mine blast attenuating seat. It will consist of specially designed interconnected seat and seat back lightweight, foam-filed, air bladders that are supported by a rigid frame. [ ] Results Air gun tests and finite element analyses were conducted to determine the effectiveness of a light-weight, foam-filled, inflatable air bladder seat shock isolation system in isolating a vehicle occupant from the injurious effects of a mine blast. Figures 2 through 5 show analytical and experimental results associated with a 65.8 kg mass resting on an inflatable air bladder that is exposed to a shock input.

The countries of Eastern Europe are former members of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA). Geographically, they are located in Central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia) and Southeastern Europe, largely in the Balkans (Yugoslavia*, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania*). It is important to remember that all of the countries of Eastern Europe had central planning imposed on them by the Soviet Union during the years following World War II. "Stalinist" policy for industrial development had three important tenets: • central economic planning, or a nonmarket-based command economy with administratively set prices; • economic priorities that stressed the development of heavy industries such as mining, metallurgy (steel) and heavy machine building; and • self-sufficiency at all costs, which was aimed at abolishing reliance on the world capitalist market, or reducing it to a minimum. Essentially, the system of industrialization that was used in the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s was imposed on Eastern Europe. Organic market economic development in Eastern Europe ceased during this period. The flaws of this experiment became apparent when mineral processing facilities were set up in many areas of Eastern Europe that did not have reliable resources. Poland, Hungary and Romania are good examples of this situation. The Soviet Union became the principal supplier of iron ore and other minerals and mineral fuels, not only to these countries but to the Bloc as a whole.

Responsible blasting requires that rock throw be controlled to ensure that no danger will result to people and property. This paper describes the development and testing of empirical field calibrated formulae that can be used to evaluate rock throw, provide an early warning of when reduced burden will endanger people and property, and prevent flyrock incidents. Inputs to the formulae are charge mass, burden or stemming height, and a site constant that lies within a general range that can be tightened by site calibration. The output is the distance that rock will be thrown, and this ‘design your own flyrock’ quantification can be used to establish both safe clearance distances, and the critical range of burdens and stemming heights where the situation changes rapidly from safe to hazardous. Examples are given of the use of the model to control flyrock in open-pit mining and quarry operations, in situations which are controlled by both burden and stemming height.

Abstract - The base-metal and PGE contents of samples from magmatic sulfide mineralization are commonly correlated with their sulfide contents, indicating that the metal contents of bulk sulfides remain approximately constant within a given prospect or part thereof. Calculated sulfide metal contents provide valuable information in mineral exploration and research, but there are few formal descriptions and analyses of the procedures. Sulfide metal contents are best calculated using an assumed value (35.7% S) for a typical pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite mixture, and there appears to be little advantage in accounting for sulfide species separately. Regression of metal data against sulfur is probably the most rigorous approach, but is not always practical. Above 10% S, calculations are very robust, but lower sulfide contents generally demand at least some correction for non-sulfidehosted metals. Such corrections can become significant below 5% S, and/or in olivine-rich samples. They are best accomplished by mass-balance calculations, using concentration data from unmineralized host rocks. Significant uncertainties are introduced by analytical errors for sulfur, base-metals, and PGE, which are commonly measured from separate sample aliquots. These combined errors in sulfide metal contents generally exceed ±10%, but expand further at low S contents. In general, treatment of data from samples containing <2.5% S must be approached with caution, especially for PGE, for which the exact host minerals may not be known. Application of the method in simple grade-potential assessment is straightforward, but research studies involving sulfide-poor samples are inherently more complex. Under-correction or over-correction of data for non-sulfide-hosted metals can lead to false negative or positive correlations between sulfide metal contents and sulfide content. As the latter may itself be linked to geological parameters, such as depth within an intrusive body, undue significance could be ascribed to such trends. There are also valid geological reasons for such correlations, and such data require careful assessment to separate true and artificial variations. Propagated analytical uncertainties increase significantly in sulfide-poor samples, and must also be borne in mind whenever data from different localities or units are compared and contrasted.

Objective To develop safety training tools for mine health and safety trainers that fill gaps in currently available materials and help capture the wisdom and knowledge of “expert miners.” Background NIOSH began a series of stakeholder meetings in 1998 to determine what research was needed to improve miner health and safety. One of the more common concerns among stakeholders was a critical lack of appropriate training materials applicable to metal/nonmetal mining. Participants provided many insights into what effective training materials should include and how materials could best reach both new and experienced miners. The most important factors were that any materials be realistic and interesting and that some way must be found to capture the wisdom of expert miners before they retired. Approach NIOSH researchers chose videos as the best means of achieving these training goals. Over the past 3 years, NIOSH has produced three training videos that present information on safe work practices in underground mines: handling explosives, recognizing roof hazards and using proper scaling techniques, and installing ground supports. The last two videos, “Rock Falls—Preventing Rock Fall Injuries in Underground Mines” and “Miner Mike Saves the Day—or—Ground Support…It’s Important,” have won Alice Hamilton awards, NIOSH’s highest recognition of Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health, in the Educational Materials category. Two new videos are now being released. Both of these videos were shot completely in operating underground hard-rock mines and used expert miners to tell the story. Hazards In Motion The first, “Hazards in Motion,” deals with the dangers of working around mobile equipment in an underground mine. Ben, a new trainee, refuses to pay attention in his 40-hour New Miner Training class, and when the class takes its first trip underground, he wanders off and finds himself in many dangerous situations. He encounters many experienced miners who both chew him out for his unsafe attitude and give him advice and information on how to survive around mobile equipment. Many common pieces of equipment are shown, including haulage trucks, LHD=s, tracks and trains, slushers, skips and hoists, and air doors. The dangers of ignoring signals and of horseplay are also included. After nearly losing his life numerous times, Ben learns his lesson with the help of the Safety Angel, an experienced miner who looks suspiciously like his safety trainer. Ben’s Safety Angel saves his life repeatedly, teaches him how to work safely around these common conveyances, and introduces him to experts who have specific safety tips. Ben learns the error of his ways and vows to be the safest miner in the mine. “Hazards in Motion” is approximately 30 minutes long. Hidden Scars The second video is the first in the NIOSH “Expert Miner” series. “Hidden Scars” is a narrative interview with Don Capparelli, a miner and supervisor at the Sunshine Mine in north Idaho. This video captures the story of a fatal rock burst in May 1994, when Don was seriously injured and his long-time partner, Jimmy Findley, was killed. “Hidden Scars” is a very powerful story. Don Capparelli shares the physical and emotional pain he lives with daily as he relates the events leading up to the rock burst that took the life of his best friend and partner. This video is an excellent reminder of the human cost of uncontrolled accidents and the hidden scars that survivors must deal with for the rest of their lives. It runs approximately 25 minutes.

Reduce worker exposure to respirable dust without interfering with bag-filling operations. Approach A dust control hood was developed which contains and captures dust close to its source and prevents it from entering the bag-filling operator&apos;s work place. How It Works A sheet metal hood is placed around the nozzle of the bag filling machine. The hood is connected through ducts to the plant exhaust ventilation system. Air pulled into the front of the hood and around the sides of the bag picks up dust generated inside the hood, and carries it to the dust collector. The size of the hood can be adapted to fit most fluidized valve-type bag-filling machines. The height of the hood depends on the bulk density of the product and weight of the bags being filled. The 14-inch-width of the hood allows it to be used on multi-nozzle baging machines spaced 16 inches on center. Only 2/3 of the bag is actually within the hood, and this allows easy operator access for placing the bags on the nozzle.

An investigation was conducted to study possible sources of Utah refractory and structural clays that could be used for the manufacture of refractories and light or buff burning heavy-clay products. A field study was made and the clay samples tested to determine their firing characteristics. Results of the Bureau&apos;s work indicate many small noncommercial deposits of hypogenic clay occur in igneous rocks. Commercial hypogenic deposits are mostly halloysite clay developed by hydrothermal replacement of limestone. The high firing shrinkage of halloysite precludes its use as a refractory, however, halloysite produced at the Dragon Mine south of Eureka, is used for making oil catalysts. Clays and shales suitable for low heat duty refractory products are found in the Manning Canyon shale, in shales associated with coal bearing rocks, and in the Dakota formation. Some of the clays from the Dakota formation are also suitable for high-duty refractory products.

El presente trabajo tiene como finalidad de ejecutar un proyecto Glory Hole San Gerardo, cuyo objetivo es desarrollar un RAMP UP de 300, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 TPD de mineral, como resultado de este proyecto de ampliación será necesario construir nuevas instalaciones de apoyo y de servicios a la mina, tales como talleres, almacenes, polvorín, ore passes, campamento etc. Estas deberán ubicarse en una zona que no afecte la futura expansión del proyecto con el método de explotación a tajo abierto.
