Este trabalho visa analisar a temperabilidade dos aços ABNT 1045 e ABNT 4140 através do ensaio Jominy e correlacionar suas propriedades com a variação microestrutural devido ao gradiente de transferência de calor através dos corpos de prova, também como analisar o efeito dos elementos de liga presentes. O ensaio Jominy foi realizado segundo a norma ABNT A255-10. Foi observado que o aço ABNT 4140 apresenta maior temperabilidade que o ABNT 1045 devido à maior profundidade de têmpera e, por conseguinte, apresentou produtos de transformação martensítica em profundidades maiores do corpo de prova. Visto que o teor de carbono em ambos os aços é aproximadamente igual, a maior temperabilidade do ABNT 4140 se dá devido aos elementos de liga presentes. Os elementos de liga do ABNT 4140 contribuem para uma maior percentagem de carbono equivalente, quando comparado ao ABNT 1045, deslocando assim o diagrama de transformação isotérmica para a direita, reduzindo então a taxa de resfriamento crítico.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. An account is given of the tests being conducted by Iscor on the following processes for the beneficiation of coal fines: froth flotation, gravity separation, heavy-medium separation, and pneumatic and column flotation. The coals used in the tests came from the Durnacol, Tshikondeni, Grootegeluk, and Hlobane collieries. The problems involved in the dewatering of fine products are stressed. From a theoretical study of the efficiencies that should be possible for a hypothetical South African coal, it is concluded that future fines-beneficiation plants in South Africa may use standard heavy-medium cyclones for coal down to 1 mm in size, fines heavy-medium separation for the 1 mm to 450 µm fraction, and column or pneumatic flotation for the minus 450 µm fines.

Musculoskeletal injury is a term used to describe a wide range of soft tissue disorders which affect the nerves, tendons, and muscles. Common examples include lower back pain, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. The majority of these injuries are not the result of sudden mishaps, but usually develop gradually from repeated wear and tear. Symptoms may first appear after weeks, months, or even years. Symptoms may result from many types of activities, performed at work or at home, and it is often difficult to attribute a single event. In fact, it is more common to identify the factors which may have contributed to the development of the condition. The terms repetitive strain injuries or cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) have been commonly used to refer to disorders that have occurred due to work related activities (Putz-Anderson, 1988; Fraser, 1989). Three main risk factors contribute to CTDs: force, repetition, and awkward postures. Any one or combination of these may contribute to the development of CTDs. Therefore, the design of equipment in conjunction with the required tasks should attempt to reduce these risk factors. Examining the layout of the work area to help identify tasks which may contribute to cumulative trauma is necessary. This paper consists of two parts: the first part describes the principles and functionality of the BsnMod program, and the second part presents preliminary application of this program to paleo-fluid flow modeling in the Anticosti Basin. The BsnMod program simulates fluid flow and heat transfer during the evolution of sedimentary basins through numerical solution (finite difference method) of three partial differential equations, which describe sediment compaction, fluid continuity, and heat conservation. It can be used to estimate the evolution of fluid overpressure, flow rate, and temperature during the basin history. The program was written in C++, works under Windows environments, and has a user interface allowing inputs in dialogues and outputs in both tabular and graphic forms. The program was applied to the Lower Paleozoic Anticosti Basin in eastern Canada. The basin history consists of a passive margin stage and a foreland basin stage. Preliminary simulation results indicate that no significant fluid overpressures were developed in the passive margin stage and during the early period of the foreland basin stage, but strong overpressures were developed within the foreland basin succession during the middle and late periods of the foreland basin stage. Fluid flow rates were generally slow, and thermal profiles were not significantly disturbed by fluid movement throughout the basin history. Potential source rocks of hydrocarbons were found in the foreland basin succession. The strong overpressures in the foreland basin succession could have been a major driving force for hydrocarbon migration from the source rocks to the underlying potential reservoir rocks.

Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

ABSTRACT A revised equilibrium approach to evaluate dipper-ground interactions during the dig cycle of ultra-class mining shovels operating in soft unblasted uniform ground conditions is presented. A review of previous approaches, leading to an outline of the modifications and ground condition considerations, is made in support of the reasoning and basis for the derivation presented. An analytical solution is provided to the scenario of a cable shovel dipper digging in soft ground material such as oil sands.

Jaspilite, a mineral consisting of silica and iron oxide in varying proportions, is one of the host rocks of the high grade ore deposits situated in the Middleback Range of South Australia. As a result of laboratory investigations, a flowsheet was postulated for the beneficiation of jaspilite to produce an acceptable grade product for feeding to blast furnaces, The flowsheet involved the reduction of the hematite in the haspilite to magnetite, the grinding of the reduced product to 95 pct minus 325 mesh Tyler followed by wet magnetic separation, hydroseparation and filtration to yield a magnetite concentrate. Agglomeration of the fine concentrate would then be necessary to meet the physical requirements of blast furnace feed. To prove the postulated flowsheet, to obtain a more accurate estimate of costs and to obtain design data for a commercial installation, a pilot plant was constructed at Whyalla, South Australia.

The Alabama tar sands of the Hartselle Sandstone formation present a more difficult problem in primary extraction than do the Athabasca tar sands. In contrast to the Athabasca tar sands, the Alabama tar sands are "oil wetted" and the contained tar, or bitumen, is of much higher viscosity. A physical beneficiation scheme was developed in which clean sand from an external source was used as a scrubbing medium. High intensity scrubbing liberated the tars which are readily recovered by froth flotation. Locked cycle tests have shown that, after the use of an initial ration of clean sand, the system produced enough new clean sand to be self sustaining.

The Nevada Test Site is located approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NY. The site was primarily used by the Department of Energy for the field testing of nuclear weapons and contaminated by several million cubic feet of low-level radioactive wastes, heavy metals, volatile and non-volatile organics, and explosive materials. Leaching and transportation of these contaminants are creating severe environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to examine pozzolan, a natural alumina-silicate mineral, as a possible replacement of the existing impermeable barriers (clays). In the first phase of this study, radionuclide sorption characteristics of pozzolan were investigated. This paper will present the results of the sorption tests for the target radionuclides.

An outcome of geometallurgical mapping and modeling is the generation of continuous down hole profiles of quantitative geometallurgical attributes at assay scale. These attributes vary from traditional routine data collection methods such as assays and geotechnical logging (e.g. RQD, Fracture Frequency), to new measurements including petrophysical attributes, EQUOtip hardness data and modelled estimates of metallurgical performance indices (e.g. A*b, BMWi). Highly variable continuous geometallurgical data with high spatial resolution can make it difficult to identify spatially continuous domains. An automated method based on the well known time series analysis technique of cumulative summation (CuSum) has been developed which uses statistical analysis to identify domain boundaries in down hole profiles. A bootstrap analysis automatically identifies potential domain boundary locations with associated confidence levels and a series of t-tests determine the significance of defined populations. A hierarchical clustering algorithm is applied to results to enable data sensitivity to be taken into account. The method produces statistically significant populations and is suitable for application on either single or multiple drill hole datasets. Domains defined preserve the inherent variability of the continuous down hole data and provide a method for scaling up variability data (i.e. assay interval scale) to mine scale (i.e. bench scale, block model). A major advantage of the method is its ability to provide suitable input parameters for use in spatial modeling of non-additive and non-linear geometallurgical attributes through conditional simulation techniques.

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical engineers play a major role in tunnel design primarily because tunnels are constructed entirely within the ground. In general, this role can be divided into two major tasks: subsurface investigations and project design. Under subsurface investigations, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to accurately describe the ground in which the project will be built. Under project design, it is necessary for the geotechnical engineer to work together with other members of the design team to make certain that the tunnel fulfills its intended purpose at least cost. Given in the paper are the authors' opinions about what constitutes an adequate scope of services for these two tasks on a tunneling project. SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS o Background Study All subsurface exploration programs for tunnels begin with a thorough investigation of background information about the proposed site. Such background information includes geologic, reports topographic maps, aerial photography, and case history reports of other nearby tunnels. Once completed, it is necessary to study the background information so that the proper scope and magnitude of subsurface exploration work is performed in a manner that provides maximum input to a knowledge of those intact and rock mass properties that are important for an understanding of the entire ground mass. The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economi-cally entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. It is not the intention of the writer to recommend coal as a fuel for automobiles and airplanes, but rather to point to these forms of transpor-tation as being responsible in a very measurable degree for reducing the coal consumed by railroads. Petroleum products may still further reduce consumption of locomotive fuel through the extension of the use of Diesel-driven trains. Oil-burning steam-driven locomotives are replacing coal in some places, where railroads operating high-speed pas-senger trains are willing, temporarily at least, to pay a premium for the fuel, that is low in ash and produces less smoke and practically no cinders. In the navy and ocean-going passenger ships, oil is so firmly estab-lished, and has such definite advantages over coal as formerly fired, in steaming radius, in ease of bunkering, cleanliness, and reduction in firing labor, that very outstanding developments in the handling and burning of coal will be required in order to replace oil. For freighters on the Great Lakes, coal is the logical fuel, but there is great and immediate need of radical improvements in its use, else that market also may be lessened. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss in detail bitumi-nous coal for either locomotive or marine use, but, rather, generation of power in stationary plants, consisting of electrical generating stations and that very large group of miscellaneous industrial plants, such as paper, rubber, textile, steel and other industries that use electrical, mechanical, and steam power, derived from either hydro or some form of fuel.

Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

The iron- and elemental sulphur-rich residues generated during batch and continuous pressure oxidative leaching of Inco Limited's Voisey's Bay nickel sulphide concentrate at 150°C in sulphate-chloride media have been characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The residues produced during the continuous leaching of the pentlandite- and pyrrhotite-rich concentrate consisted predominantly of hematite and elemental sulphur, with minor amounts of goethite. Although the iron species generated in the batch leaching tests were similar to those formed during continuous leaching, the morphologies of the hematite and goethite particles were significantly different. In addition to the tiny spheroids and bubble-like particles, the hematite and goethite generated during batch leaching occurred as larger "hollow" shell-like particles that contained residual pentlandite or sulphur cores. Although the leach solution from which the iron oxides had precipitated contained 5-15 g/L sodium, sodium jarosite was detected only in trace amounts in a few of the leach residues.

This paper cannot fail of being of great interest and value to all who are interested in the cyanide process, on account of the important developments which it records. Mr. Johnston is to be commended for the large amount of detail which he gives, and the company and its management for permitting the publication of data of this character, which while of great value to others could well be considered private property. It might be discussed from a number of standpoints: First, as an example of recent practice in mill and cyanide plant construction; second, the mill practice; third, the cyanide practice; and fourth, the new features in cyanide treatment involved. Perhaps a more vivid way of expressing it would be : First, the equipment or tools with which the various operations are carried on, are they the best and most efficient which could have been selected for their respective uses; and, second, is the best use in every case made of these tools? It may be well inquired is the highest possible recovery of silver made at the lowest cost per ounce recovered? For after all, the making of the greatest ultimate profit is inseparably associated with successful metallurgical practice; there must therefore be at all times a careful balance maintained between recovery and cost of obtaining it. I wish to call attention in a very general way to the equipment used and to an anticipation of questions which are bound to arise in this connection. However, the. bulk of my discussion will be confined to the presentation of certain additional data, together with a more or less general discussion showing the line of development which leads up to the present practice and .the applicability of certain features of it to similar problems elsewhere. There are a number of vital points of broad general interest involved in Nipissing low-grade practice upon which metallurgists will by no means be agreed to which I wish to call particular attention in the hope that it will lead to the presentation of data y others of practice in other districts which will' assist in reconciling this divergence of opinion.

"The majority of early studies used X-ray diffraction, but this requires a model to interpret the diffraction processes. A turbostratic model has been applied by Warren, Franklin and Bacon to a wide range of materials including both soft and hard carbons. Maire and Mering applied the same methods to the interpretation of the (001) lines of a series of graphitic carbons. In our case, graphitic carbons undergone high temperature and high pressure graphitization processes have been evaluated by the same methods. It were found that most technological XRD data were obtained by a Rietveld method with the least-squares refinements could be in the simplest way since the full correction technique is very laborious. The behavior of carbon materials as it proceeds through the graphitization process is characterized by changes in the measured interlayer spacings (d) a~ a function of temperature. A series of graphitic carbons including the transformation of diamond to graphite through the process under high temperature and high pressure have been evaluated. A simple calibration equation has been established. IntroductionRecently, in battery industry, carbon materials are used as cathode in lithium ion batteries. However, graphitization of those carbon materials is concerned as if lithium ion intercalated into those carbon cathode. Both high-graphitization and low-graphitization carbon materials are suitable for this kind of application.As for graphitization, the starling materials from which carbons may be prepared vary extensively from pure chemical compounds, to mixtures containing II wide range of molecular weights, such as pitches. So its graphitizing, perhaps the most notable feature of the process, is the very wide range of temperature over which the perfection increase, unlike the more common transformations of solid state materials which occur in a narrow temperature range. The variables involved in the conversion of the initial hydrocarbon to a carbon residue, which may vary widely in final perfection, are time, temperature, stress and impurity content"

"1.1 Location and Transportation ServicesNanisivik Mines Ltd. is located at latitude 73°, 3,200 km north of Montreal and 700 km north of the Arctic circle, on the south side of Strathcona Sound, which is an arm of Admiralty Inlet, in Northern Baffin Island. The orebody and mill site are 4 km distant from Strathcona Sound which provides deep water anchorage for ocean transportation of concentrate to Europe during the short northern shipping season from mid-July to mid-October.The operations and the resident community have direct jet aircraft service from Montreal two days per week, and local nights connect with other Arctic communities in the northern Baffin region. Bulk supplies and general cargo are delivered in the summer shipping season.1.2 HistoryThe Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, now Kidd Creek Mines Limited, staked claims in the Nanisivik area in 1957 and carried out exploration through to 1968. After the Kidd Creek orebody was found, Texas Gulf optioned the property in 1972 to Mineral Resources International Inc. (MRI), which undertook further exploration and completed a feasibility study.Nanisivik Mines Ltd. was formed in 1975, with MRI as the majority shareholder and minority shareholdings held by Metallgesellschaft, Billiton and Texas Gulf. Strathcona Mineral Services Limited was retained to manage the project during both the construction and operational phases."

CalMat Co. is one of the largest producers of construction aggregates in the United States. The CalMat Reliance plant is located in Irwindale, California, and is situated on an alluvial fan formed by the San Gabriel River. The fan deposits are of Quaternary age and were derived from granitic and metamorphic bedrock exposed in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. The sediments are poorly sorted and range in size from large boulders to clay size particles. The coarse material is hard and durable and consists of quartz diorite, granodiorite, granitic gneiss, schist and minor amounts of volcanic rock. The matrix is comprised of silty sand with varying amounts of clay. Thin silt and clay lenses occur sporadically throughout the deposit. The clay content of the matrix and the degree of weathering of the coarse material increases with depth. Based on seismic data, the alluvial fan varies from 200 to 400 feet thick and overlies crystalline bedrock. The Reliance plant was constructed in 1971 and 1972. It has a nominal capacity of 1200 to 1400 tons per hour, and typically produces more than three million tons of aggregate products per year. Alluvial fan sediments are mined from a gravel pit situated adjacent to the plant. The material is fed through a mobile, 48- by 60-inch, in-pit jaw crusher, then transported by conveyor to the main plant to be processed. The plant is modern and highly efficient. It has a typical wet and dry circuit and is capable of producing a wide range of aggregate products. To extend the life of the plant, a 9,000 foot conveyor system is being constructed to connect it to a granite quarry operated by Azusa Rock Inc. The quarry is located north of Irwindale, and is 50 percent owned by CalMat Co. The conveyor will be used to export crushed rock from the quarry to Reliance. The existing plant will be modified to process the crushed rock.
