There are presently several issues that the mining industry is facing, such as underground air quality, deep mining and green house gas emissions, which could be addressed by the application of alternate energies. Several aspects must be considered by the industry in any drive to introduce new technologies within the context of a producing underground mine. This article presents several operational and support aspects that will evaluate the relevance of alternate energies, with emphasis on hydrogen power systems: operational drivers, commercial supply of technology, site supply system requirements, health and safety, capital and operating costs, mine production, corporate philosophy, and role of government. It is concluded that introduction of alternate energy technology requires a step-wise progression: Applicability to the industry, proof of concept testing, development of generic infrastructure, power systems and regulations, whole system studies and detailed studies of cost and risk versus benefits. The current initiative to apply fuel cells is at the proof of concept stage, entering the generic infrastructure stage.

This paper presents the results of a series of experiments made in the metallurgical laboratory of Columbia University, New Pork City. The object of the investigation was to determine, as far as possible, the changes in micro-structure and physical properties caused by short periods of heat-treatment and the longer malleable cast-iron process. It was proposed to do this by means of micro-photographs, heating- and cooling-curves, and tensile tests after the various heat-treatments. I. Micro-Constituents of Iron and Steel. The list of the micro-constituents of iron and steel has grown till now it includes seven different substances, called ferrite, cementite, pearlite,* martensite, austenite, sorbite and troosite. Only the first five of these are mentioned in this paper, to facilitate the understanding of which, the following brief definitions are given: 1. Ferrite (named by Prof. Howe) is, chemically, iron free from carbon. It is the softest of the constituents, and is not colored by etching, except when long-continued. Under the microscope it is easily determined by its regular polygonal etructure; or, if structureless, as in malleable cast-iron, by the ease with which it is scratched. Ferrite appears in mild steel in small amount, in grey cast-iron, and in malleable cast-iron. 2. Cementite (also named by Prof. Howe) is now generally conceded to have the formula Fe3C. "INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has come into prominence in the last 15 years and increased considerably during the war. In contrast to other light metals, such as aluminum and magnesium, beryllium is relatively hard, has a high melting point (1,285° C.), and other properties that make it resemble steel in many respects. It has a specific gravity of 1.85, is only slightly heavier than magnesium (specific gravity 1.74), and is appreciably lighter than aluminum (specific gravity 2.7). Its lack of ductility prevents its use as a structural material, but this difficulty may be overcome in the future by the use of various alloy forms. The only important commercial alloy in which beryllium is used today is with copper. The addition of small percentages (1/2 to 2 percent) of beryllium to copper imparts properties to the alloy that make it desirable for use in springs carrying electrical current, particularly at high temperature. Many other uses of berylliam are known, and new uses are being found constantly that make the metal of increasing interest.Possibly the main factor preventing the use of more beryllium is the lack of a large source of beryllium ore. Many beryllium minerals are found as minor constituents of natural deposits, some of the more common ones being beryl (Be3Al2(Si03)6), chrysoheryl (Be A1204), helvite (3(Mn, Fe) Be Si04. MnS), and phenacite (Be2Si04). Of the known beryllium minerals, beryl is by far the most common and has been found distributed rather widely throughout the world. It usually occurs associated with granitic rocks and is commonly found as a constituent of granitic pegmatite."

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays, and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels while using a 12.2 m (40 ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1 m (20 ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complemented the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut as compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

Salinity in Australia is caused by over irrigation and land clearing for agricultural use over the last 100 years. It is now the biggest threat to the quality of land and water in the Murray Darling Basin and Western Australia. Pumping the saline waters straight into the ocean or transporting the solid residue (mainly sodium chloride) to the ocean after evaporation of the water is expected to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars every year. This paper proposes that the salinity problem of Australia, at least in part, can be converted to an asset rather than a liability if it is exploited and used to make value-added products. The more value made out of saline waters, the more saline water is processed and therefore the more salt is extracted from the land. The value-added products that can be made out of saline waters are numerous and diverse. Rough calculations show that value addition to the saline waters could potentially generate up to $A 200 million per annum business in the Murray-Darling Basin. Although it is a challenge to make cost competitive products and find markets for these products it is possible that up to $A 100 million per year may be gained from import substitution. Value addition to salinity would also reduce the threat on the environment and existing agricultural industry. Investment to add value to salinity will create business in the region, nurture the local small population communities, and increase services and long-term employment.

To meet the energy requirements, hydroelectric projects are planned and executed in many countries. Though these projects requires a high capital investment, the returns are regular with minimum maintenance after commissioning of the project and are ecofriendly. Bhutan is situated in the eastern Himalayas and covers an area of 38,394km2 (14824.01sq. miles. It is bordered by India in East, South and West and by Tibet in the North. The hydropower potential of the country is estimated at 30,000MW, out of which around 5% has been harnessed.

THE Company maintains a port agency at Antofagasta for dispatching copper and also for receiving from ocean vessels the vast variety of materials and supplies required at the plant. Copper shipments from the oxide plant refinery to Antofagasta amounted to 162,000 metric tons during 1951, while incoming freight totalled 175,000 metric tons. Electrolytic market copper in various shapes is currently loaded at the plant upon 20 or 30-ton cars of the meter-gage Antofagasta-Bolivia Railroad, to be transported a distance of 165 miles to the company's yard at Antofagasta. Here it is unloaded by cranes at the rate of about 175 tons per hr. Copper not scheduled for immediate shipment is stocked in tiers within the yard, but most of it is reloaded and sent to port works or a wharf serving lighters. Some of the vessels entering Antofagasta tie up at the port works, while others anchor inside the breakwater. In the latter case, all of the loading into the hatches is from 50-ton lighters towed to the vessel. When the vessel is at the dock, about half of the copper is loaded by port works cranes and the other half is loaded by ship's tackle from lighters. Fuel Oil Requirement Expands One of the innovations caused by the construction of the sulphide plant has been the necessity to provide facilities at Antofagasta for receiving and storing greater quantities of fuel oil than in recent years. From here it is loaded into tank cars for transportation to Chuquicamata. The older installation consisted of a 10-in. submarine pipe line, heating, and pumping facilities, a 67,500-bbl storage tank, and railroad loading rack, located at Antofagasta's northern limits. Two new tanks, of 80,000 and 30,000-bbl capacity respectively, have now been added and a second submarine pipe line will shortly be installed. Fuel oil requirements for the sulphide plant are estimated at 39,000 bbl per month, in addition to which 9000 bbl per month are required for the operation of the oxide plant. The company has a special lighter which is used by its diver for connecting the oil line with the oil tanker when disembarking oil, this lighter also being used for inspecting and overhauling buoys, as well as for recovery of bars of copper which are sometimes dropped into the bay when loading vessels during periods of rough weather. Transport of oil to Chuquicamata is by 76 tank cars of, 20-ton capacity and 20 of 30-ton capacity, all assigned to the company's fuel oil shipments excepting six for Diesel oil and one for gasoline. Incoming Freight Other freight received by the port agency has been averaging about 4800 metric tons per month of operating supplies for the oxide plant (renewals of equipment, spare parts, lubricating oils, and greases, etc.), some 1900 metric tons per month for the company stores, and about 6000 metric tons per month of materials and equipment for the construction of the sulphide plant. The greater part of these shipments (particularly the operating and construction supplies) originate from abroad, and must be handled through the Chilean Customs. Hence the company maintains a Customs storage warehouse (goods pending appraisal of Customs duties) in addition to its other storage facilities at Antofagasta. Not the least of the Port Agency's duties is to meet air and steamer passengers en route to Chuquicamata and to arrange for their trips up the hill. Landing in a strange country with a strange language, the first impressions of a new employee might otherwise be indeed confusing when facing Antofagasta's unique setting of brown barren hills.

Therefore, accessibility to and utilisation of the data base in the most effective manner is an issue to be addressed in terms of modern information technology. The Department has developed a strategy whose implementation is progressing rapidly.

Prevent the propagation of a fire and control the spread of smoke and toxic gas in underground mines. Approach A fire door suitable for large openings in underground noncoal mines and providing protection for openings requiring 11/2 hours of fire resistance, a 250°F maximum temperature rise, and high pressure differentials was de-signed, laboratory tested, and in-mine tested. How It Works The door is a double-acting swing type. Its two panels. connected by an overhead linkage, open in opposite directions. Consequently, high pressure differentials across the door have little effect on the force required to open and close the door. The door is constructed of 14-gauge sheet steel skins welded to both sides of a 5-inch-wide steel channel frame. The frame is rein-forced with 5-inch-wide steel channels in a horizontal and diagonal pattern. The voids between the reinforcing members are filled with a ceramic fiber insulation material to limit the surface temperature rise of the unexposed side of the door during a fire. A fire -resistant neoprene-coated fabric is used to seal around the edges of the door panels. The door is opened and closed by an air cylinder, attached to the over-head linkage and operated by lanyards on either side of the door. The door design includes an optional airlock manway for drifts of adequate width.

Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself- only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions.

Engineering availability of the 120/200 tonne Wabco haulpak fleet at Mt. Whaleback was in the mid fifties and unstable. The project to achieve a reliable 66% during 1980 highlighted "plannable" maintenance, short cycle scheduling, condition monitoring, backlog control, and, above all, the importance of involving all affected people. It is not sufficient for consultants to design systems and make them work. The people who use the system must understand it, support it and "own" it. In this way, they will develop it and improve results after the outside help has been withdrawn INTRODUCTION In early 1979, PA proposed a programme to improve engineering availability of the Mt. Newman Mining fleet of 70 Wabco haulpak trucks of which 53 were 120 tonne and 17 were 200 tonne units. (Subsequently five 200 tonne trucks from Hamersley Iron were added to the fleet). The ore truck workshop was also responsible for 75 tonne trucks used as water trucks and general purpose vehicles. The need for action was clear. "Abstract: In this work, low temperature carbothermic reduction of Panzhihua low grade ilmenite after ball milling were investigated. The ball milling of ilmenite and graphite were processed in a ball mill. The milling process can attenuate the particle of ilmenite, and the ilmenite characteristic peak were broadened and weakened. The reduction temperature and behaviors are studied on the thermo gravimetric apparatus; lower temperature and higher reaction rate were obtained for the reduction of ilmenite with graphite after milled. The reduction temperature and times of ilmenite decreased to 1000-1025°C and 40-60min via milled for 4 or 8h; Low down the reduction temperature can eliminate the solution of Mg2+ and FeTi03 in a certain degree; the reduced ilmenite has an obvious loose structure, can favored the subsequent procedure such as leaching.1 IntroductionThere is about 9.66 billion tons of Vanadic Titan-magnetite deposited in Panzhihua, China. In this reserve, there is about 8.73x108 t ofTi02, Accounting for 90.54% of the Chinese reserves, and 35.17% of the international reserves and ranking first in the world. [JJ Titanium mineral deposits major classified into Rock type and Placer type. Rock type is the igneous mineral, which have great content of FeO (Relative to Fe20 3) and gangue. The rock textures are compact and almost are complex ore. Rock type Titanium mineral major are ilmenite and titan magnetite ore, difficult to separate the metal ore and gangue. l.21 Thus, the Ti02 grade of Rock type ilmenite much lower than the Placer type (Table land 11). Panzhihua ilmenite are the typical Rock-type, due to the higher contents of MgO, CaO and Si02 and the complex mineralogy in ilmenite in Panzhihua region, making its direct reduction progressively more difficult. Mechanical activation, usually carried out by energetic milling or ball milling, was reported to significantly decreased the reduction temperature and accelerate the reaction rate of reduction of ilmenite with carbon, silicon and Magnesium. f3·(>J It reported that the process temperature were decreased to 600-1000°C and the annealing time were reduced to 30-120min after milled for 50-400 h. The important characteristics of a gas-promoted oil agglomeration process for cleaning coal particles in an aqueous suspension were determined. Numerous agglomeration tests with scale-model mixing systems of different sizes with controlled amounts of air were conducted. The tests were conducted on high- and mediumvolatile bituminous coals using either i-octane or hexadecane as an oily agglomerant. The performance of the system was characterized by employing the minimum time required to produce spherical agglomerates (tE), the mean agglomerate diameter (dp), coal recovery and product ash content. Among these parameters, tE was found the most useful. It is a key parameter in the scale-up of an agglomeration mixing system. This parameter was found to depend on a number of system and operating variables. By controlling these variables and conducting further agglomeration tests with mixing systems that varied in size, an appropriate size scale-up rule was established.

In open-pit mines, the long-term production scheduling optimization problem (LTPSOP) is a complicated problem that contains constraints, large datasets and uncertainties. Due to its dimensions and NP-hard nature, it is usually difficult to find an ideal solution to the LTPSOP. The optimal schedule generally restricts the ore, metal and waste tonnages, average grades, and cash flows of each period. In this paper, to synthesize grade uncertainty into the strategic schedule, a stochastic integer programming (SIP) framework is presented to LTPSOP. The objective function of the SIP model is to maximize the net present value and minimize the risk of deviation from the production targets considering grade uncertainty simultaneously while satisfying all technical constraints and operational requirements. Instead of applying one estimated orebody model as input to optimize the production schedule, a set of equally probable orebody realizations is applied to synthesize grade uncertainty in the strategic schedule and produce a more profitable and riskbased production schedule. To solve the LTPSOP, the hybrid approach with the augmented Lagrangian relaxation method, the Harris Hawks optimization, the Random Forest method and Monte Carlo method was proposed. To indicate the applicability of the model, a case study on a gold mine was implemented. The framework displays the capability to minimize risk and improvement in the expected net present value and financial profitability .

"In the differential metal sulfide ore flotation it is desirable to replace the toxic inorganic depressants with environmentally benign chemicals. Chitosan, as a natural and non-toxic polymer, has been proven to be an efficient depressant for chalcopyrite while allowing galena to be floated by xanthate collectors. However, the poor solubility of chitosan limits its potential applications as the flotation could only be carried out at about pH 4 where chitosan is soluble. A carboxymethyl derivative of chitosan, named N-carboxymethyl chitosan (N-CMC), was synthesized by substituting the amino groups of chitosan with carboxymethyl groups. The substitution significantly improved the solubility of chitosan. The structure of N-CMC was studied and compared with chitosan via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Flotation tests were performed on single minerals and mineral mixtures (with weight ratio of 1:1) with the addition of appropriate amount of potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and N-CMC. The solution pH was varied from neutral to alkaline. The flotation concentrates and tailings were collected and analysed for the contents of copper and lead. FTIR measurements showed that new peaks of C=O stretching of -COOH and N-H deformation of -NH- appeared in N-CMC, which indicated that the carboxymethyl groups were introduced and the amino groups were the sites for the substitution. Flotation results indicated that N-CMC could depress either chalcopyrite or galena depending on the pH. The results were not affected by the sequence of KEX and N-CMC addition. Therefore, N-CMC is potentially useful in Cu-Pb sulfide separation following a bulk Cu-Pb flotation. The N-CMC was also found to have surface cleaning functions, and was able to remove contaminating copper ions from galena surfaces. Therefore, its application in sulfide ore flotation is expected to be more robust than the original chitosan."

Underground excavations exhibit different hangingwall conditions in response to varying geotechnical and mining situations. These differences need to be quantified so as to accurately determine the effectiveness of the mining and/or support strategies. A useful tool for the quantification of these differences is hangingwall profiling. Two methods of hangingwall profile measurement are described?termed irregular and periodic methods. Several data analysis techniques are reviewed for these methods and the suitable ones are discussed in detail. For irregular data the suitable techniques are the determination of the length, the average of the profile and the average absolute deviation from the mean of the profile. All of these techniques as well as determination of the moving average of the height and examination of the spectral image of the profile can be successfully applied to regular data. The effect of preconditioning on the hangingwall is discussed as an example and it is quantitatively shown that it results in improvements of conditions. The techniques described allow the engineer to quantitatively identify the appropriate support type or mining strategy and thus represent a valuable decision-making tool. It is suggested that these techniques should be employed on a routine basis by the rock engineers on the mines as part of their geotechnical classification, as well as support manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of various support types.

Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). Since 1954, much drilling, mapping, and quarrying has been done but there is no published report of this work.The rocks which constitute the Middleback Range, Camel Hill-Cooyerdoo line, Katunga Hill-Iron Knob, and Ash Range (Fig. 1) belong to the Middleback Group of Middle Precambrian or late Archaean age. The prevent paper contains a method which combines the material balance equation' with the water influx equation' to obtain reliable values for the active oil originally in place and a quantitative evaluation of the cumulative water influx. The method is illustrated by an application to a reservoir without original gas cap. In the absence of an original gas cap. results may be obtained using only field production and pressure data, PVT analyses. and a minimum of subsurface information. CHARACTERISTICS OF RESERVOIR AND RESERVOIR FLUIDS Production in the field under review is obtained from the top of the Wilcox formation of Eocene age, at a depth of approximately 8,100 ft subsea. The structural map, Fig. 1, shows that the accumulation, half elliptical in shape with the long axis in east-west direction, is trapped to the north and on the upthrown side of a normal fault. A number of east-west faults with additional minor faulting in random directions are found in the general area, and seismic information and production performance indicate in this particular case the existence of a second fault a short distance downdip, with a strike more or less parallel to the fault controlling the accumulation. It is estimated that 1,830 acres were originally underlain by oil and that the maximum thickness of the original oil column, about 37 ft, was only slightly greater than the maximum thickness of the oil-bearing sand. Maximum net sand thickness was estimated at approximately 26 ft. From logging and subsurface information the gross sand volume has been placed at 37.400 acre-ft. which reduces to about 27,500 acre-ft after probable non-productive intervals have been deducted. Explosions in underground mining due to methane gas have been the leading cause of incidents and fatalities in the mining industry. The main objective of this research is to develop a forecasting methodology for methane gas emissions based on time series analysis. Methane time series data were retrieved from atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) of three underground coal mines in the United States. The AMS data were preprocessed and statistically evaluated to explore the potential autocorrelation of methane gas. It was concluded that the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) time series model used in the one-step-ahead forecasting mode provides accurate estimates that match the increase or decrease of the methane gas emission data.

All attempts to replace silica brick by other refractory materials for this purpose have failed, but the reason for this failure has remained obscure; we shall give an explanation later in this paper. Before the war, silica brick employed in France came principally from abroad, for which reason, since the beginning of hostilities, certain French steel works have been seriously handicapped. Our attention was first directed to the question by M. Bied, Engineer of the Teil Works. With him, we began certain investigations, at first using our laboratory and the furnaces of neighboring steel works. The larger part of our experiments, however, have been made in the laboratory of the Faculty of Sciences at the Sorbonne. For the heating of our samples, we are deeply obliged to MM. Charpy, Yeatmann and Guerineau.
