With the use of 86 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt. Lyell Mining & Hailway Co., it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5,000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts noted on this line. (See l"ig. 1.) Thus at a glance it is possible to see... the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this difficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component. As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5,000 feet bored. (See Fig. 2.) The curves so obtained are particularly interesting for two reasons:1. Each machine has its characteristic curve.2. The curve always steepens.Some machines are found to have relatively flat curves, others flat curves for approximately 15,000 feet of boring, and others steep gradients from the begining.This demonstrates that it is not always economic to discard a drill after it has been in service for a certain length of time or after it has bored a specified number of feet. Each drill has its own characteristics and so must not be regarded as one of a class, but considered on its own performance.The following use of these curve diagrams has been made to determine whether a machine has reached the end of its economic life. This paper describes a numerical mathematical model of the steamflood process that depends on fewer restrictive assumptions than models previously reported. The solution, however, is obtained economically. Example calculations are presented that, on comparison with experimental results, tend to validate the model. Results that expose certain process mechanics are discussed. The model describes the simultaneous flow of three phases — oil, water and gas — in one dimension. It includes the effects of three-phase relative permeabilities, capillary pressure, and temperature- and pressure - dependent fluid properties. Interphase mass transfer of water-steam is allowed, but the oil is assumed nonvolatile and the hydrocarbon gas insoluble in the liquid phases. The model allows heat convection in one dimension and two-dimensional heat conduction in a vertical cross-section spanning the oil sand and adjacent strata. The hydrocarbon-steam gas composition is tracked, but the effect of gas composition on water-steam phase behavior is neglected. The model is solved numerically in three separate stages. The three-phase mass balances are solved simultaneously using Newtonian iteration on nonlinearities occurring in the accumulation terms. The energy balance is solved separately by noniterative application of the alternating-direction implicit procedure. Separate solution of the composition balance is accomplished by straightforward solution of the finite difference equations. The method of effecting nonsimultaneous, stable solution of the mass and energy balances is the key to the success of the model. INTRODUCTION Mathematical tools as well as laboratory and field experiments are necessary to help us understand the complex steamflood process. A mathematical model can expose process mechanics and show the relative importance of process variables, but this ability is often limited by restrictive assumptions. Most known models of steam processes,l-5 with the exception of the model of Gottfried,6 are "simplified" in that they involve analytic approximations and require many restrictive assumptions. The primary utility of these methods lies in the routine use as an aid in engineering design. By contrast, the comprehensive model presented here is numerical and requires far fewer restrictive assumptions. It finds its primary utility as a research tool. It serves as an aid in understanding the nature of the process, in interpreting laboratory experiments and in evaluating and developing simpler mathematical models for engineering design. The major reason why previously presented models have been confined to the "simplified" class is evidenced by the one published exception. In 1965, Gottfried6 presented a numerical model for the combustion process of which the steam process is a subset. The result is a comprehensive tool (though it neglects capillarity and two-dimensional heat conduction) that is troubled with convergence problems and that requires 2 to 3 hours of IBM 7094 time to complete a calculation. Though our present model does not simulate combustion, it does consider capillarity and two-dimensional heat conduction and it overcomes the convergence and computer-time problems. MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF STEAMFLOODING FLUID FLOW The equations employed to describe three-phase fluid flow are of a familiar form. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE history of the several petroleum deposits of Texas and Mexico, or of the sediments in which they now occur, if the deposits are not indigenous to such sediments, is known in a general way only, but it nevertheless casts strong light on the conditions surrounding them and is of great importance in the search for and exploitation of then. The petroleum deposits of Texas are separable into two main divisions: 1. The deposits of northwestern Texas, which are directly connected with the Oklahoma fields to the north, and have no representatives at all in the Mexican area. 2. The deposits of the coastal area, which extend into Louisiana on the east and connect with those of the Mexican coast to the south. Early in the Pennsylvanian period a series of bituminous shales and limestones were laid crown over a broad area in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. These are known as the Bend series in Texas, the Caney shales in Oklahoma, and the Fayetteville beds in Arkansas. Following their deposition an uplift occurred, forming the Lampasas geanticlinal, which runs northeastward from the old Paleozoic land area of the Llano region toward Red River. The Bend series is petroliferous in places and has furnished a few producing wells on each side of the Lampasas uplift. This uplift forms the barrier and. dividing line between the two divisions of the Texas petroleum deposits. To the west of it, in waters which were the southern extension of the interior continental seas, in connection with the sediments and coal beds of the Pennsylvanian and Permian, great quantities of petroleum were deposited either as oil or as "potential petroleum." These sediments have been subject to very slight disturbance, and only very gentle folds. are found, with no signs of volcanic action in any part of the area. The conditions, therefore, indicate that the greater part, if not all, of the oil in this area is indigenous to the beds in which it is found.

Change occurs all of the time. In fact, it’s fair to say that change is a constant. Sometimes the change is inconsequential, but sometimes the change impacts us d i rectly and severely. Take regulations, for instance. Complying with regulatory requirements is just part of the job for those involved with explosives. But in recent years, it seems as if new or revised regulations in areas such as hazardous materials training, drug and alcohol testing, security issues, or local licensing/permitting standards are changing the way we operate on a recurring basis. Simply keeping track of all of these regulations has become a full-time job.

THE subject of blast-furnace slag is one which has had much consideration, particularly from the scientific standpoint, and several years ago technical literature contained many learned discussions on the oxygen-ratio of the acids and the bases, all on the assumption that acids and bases must be present in a ratio depending on molecular weight and chemical valency. Much work has also been done, sometimes in conjunction with the former, on the total heat and the temperature of initial fusion or softening of various slags. A wider knowledge of the blast-furnace now enables us to say that for practical purposes this work has been of almost no value. It is now generally admitted that on the physical side the important point of a given slag is neither its total heat of fusion nor its softening-point, but its free-running temperature, since this is the critical temperature of the furnace. This temperature bears no definite relation to the softening-temperature, as determined by Seger cones, for instance, because some slags melt relatively like ice, with a very short viscous-range, while others melt relatively like tar, with a very long viscous-range. In one the difference between the softening- and the free-running temperature may be very small, as little as 100° F., while in another this difference may easily be 200° or 300°. The importance of this difference is so great in practice as to destroy completely the value of exhaustive investigations, even such as those of 0. INTRODUCTION CRA Limited is the largest mining group in Australia by value of sales and the second largest company in Australia in terms of share market capitalisation. In the past 25 years, CRA, its predecessors and affiliates have been involved in a number of mining and further processing developments in Australia and elsewhere. Many of these have been financed using project financing techniques. These include Comalco's development of the Weipa bauxite deposits in Northern Queensland in the late 1950's, the Hamersley iron ore developments in the Pilbara region of Western Australia in the mid 1960's, the Queensland Alumina Limited alumina refinery in Gladstone, Queensland, at about the same time, and the Bougainville copper project in 1969/70. In the past three years CRA has again utilised project financing techniques to fund its Tarong steaming coal project in Queensland, the Blair Athol steaming coal project also in that State and CRA's interest in the Argyle diamond project in the Kimberley region of Western Austrlia. PROJECT FINANCE DEFINED Nevitt Definition Nevitt's is the most frequently quoted definition - "A financing of a particular economic unit in which a lender is satisfied to look initially to the cash flows and earnings of the economic unit as the source of funds from which a loan will be repaid and to the assets of the economic unit as collateral for the loan." Risk and Balance Sheet Treatment It is important to focus in more detail on two aspects of project financing, risk and balance sheet treatment. The assessment of the various elements of risk in a project and the sharing of that risk between sponsors and lenders is the most critical feature. At one end of the spectrum is full absorption of risk by the sponsor(s). This can be described as "on risk" or "on credit" or "full recourse" to the sponsor(s) and is effectively a corporate financing. At the other end of the spectrum the lenders absorb the whole risk in a non-recourse financing which is "off risk" or "off credit" for the sponsor. The other aspect is the sponsor's balance sheet treatment. If the balance sheet of the economic unit undertaking the project and the financing need not be consolidated into the balance sheet of the sponsor (because ownership does not exceed 50%) then the financing may be described as off-¬balance sheet. If consolidation is required then the financing is described as on-balance sheet. Most project financings involve some recourse to the sponsor, i.e. they are limited recourse. Very few are non-recourse or off credit to the sponsor. Limited recourse financings may be on-balance sheet although many may also be off-balance sheet insofar as consolidation is concerned. However, sponsor support may very well be a contingent liability to the sponsor and require disclosure by way of note to the balance sheet should consolidation not be required. CORPORATE FINANCE CONTRASTED A financing which is on credit or full recourse to the sponsor, whether it is directly borrowed or guaranteed by that sponsor, is a corporate financing. Lenders will tend to base their credit assessment on a historical assessment of the sponsor's activities and its financial results rather than an assessment of the project or a detailed assessment of the future activities and prospects of the sponsor. PROJECT FINANCE - A BORROWER'S PERCEPTION Although CRA could choose to arrange all finance on a corporate basis (except perhaps for the very largest projects or acquisitions), project financing techniques provide a number of specific advantages which CRA has noted and which should be carefully considered by a project sponsor. SINCE Honda and Murakami1 in 1918 proposed their constitutional diagram of the carbon-free iron-tungsten system, considerable effort has been expended by several investigators in attempts to define more positively the structural features of the alloys. The existence of an intermediate phase corresponding to the formula Fe3W2 (68.7 per cent W) was proposed from evidence of a purely metallographic nature by one of the present authors2 in 1926. Since that time the identity of this phase has been confirmed by Arnfelt3 and by Takeda,4 both of whom employed X-ray methods as well as the microscope and the chemical analysis of isolated microconstituents. According to Arnfelt, Fe3W2, as crystallized from the iron-rich melts at a temperature above 1450'C., contains by analysis 68.7 per cent W. The lattice of this phase is characterized by trigonal symmetry. Arnfelt, moreover, proposed a second intermediate phase formed at some temperature between 1450° and 1000° C. by a peritectoid reaction involving Fe3W2 and the iron-rich solid solution. A melt containing 25 per cent W was cooled to 1000° C. and heated for. 100 hr. The precipitated tungsten-rich constituent was separated and found by analysis to contain 62.6 per cent W. This composition agrees closely with that represented by the formula Fe2W (62.2 per cent W). Diffraction patterns from the concentrated precipitate showed a hexagonal unit cell. Takeda confirmed the data of Arnfelt regarding Fe3W2 but was unable to detect Arnfelt's second intermediate phase. While Takeda. failed to describe in detail the treatments employed, he stated that in alloys containing 40 per cent W which were quenched after heating at various temperatures between 1200° and 1450° C., no evidence of the second phase (Fe2W) was observed either in the microstructure or in the diffraction patterns of isolated residues. He therefore considered the existence of this low-temperature hexagonal compound as disproved.

JOHNSTON9] Foreword PROSPECTING methods used in Tennessee have gradually improved with the years, as required by depletion of the easily accessible and shallow deposits and the universal trend toward mechanization, and as necessitated by exploring deeper beds, often occurring under limestone and flinty overburden. In the early days it was a very simple matter to dig pits by hand, using a plentiful supply of local farm labor to expose relatively shallow deposits of "brown rock" under shallow clayey overburden that would stand up without timbering. Visual inspection of the exposed phosphate and expert judgment of the"grade" analysis, aided by a "biting" test to reveal presence of unwanted silica, furnished most of the information required. All this might be helped by a few samples sent to the local chemist[t] who supplemented his income by judicious trading or tanning a few bear skins. The extra curricula activities did not affect the accuracy of the analysis which hold up even under present day standards. Some shot and core drilling was done in Hickman County, mostly for the limestone-like blue Phosphate deposits. The next step was the use of a 4-in. posthole auger, hand operated as described by Guenther, followed by- a completely mechanized rig, as described by Pickard. Both these methods are practically adapted to the prospecting of the relatively soft brown rock deposits at moderate depths of clay overburden. For prospecting in areas of deeper overburden, such as are often found in Hickman County, up to 150 or even 200-ft depths, a modified core-drilling method is described by Guenther. Johnston describes a special diamond-drilling technique, developed by TVA, to penetrate flint horizons, which was adopted by the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation to prospect in Hickman County where deposits had previously been prospected at considerable expense and with difficulty, by Small, temporary, hand-dug shafts.

Bureau of Mines engineers end others have endeavored to deter-nine a fundamental method for gauging the capacity of gas wells to deliver gas under different pressure conditions. Their studies show that for accurate gauging two factors must be determined: (1) The actual pressures at the face of the sand in the well (usually referred to as "at the sand"), acid (2) the relation between such pressures and the rates. of flow of c as through the sand. This paper, the first of a series, describes a method of attacking the problem of determining the actual pressures at the sand by means of observations of pressures and volumes at the well head.

Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural monitoring methods and better hang-up prevention and removal techniques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during the transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remediation strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste-rock loads on chutes, walls, gates and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading conditions. A full-scale mockup of actual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. The experiments herein described were undertaken with a view to investigating thoroughly the influence of carbon on the tensile and impact physical properties of carbon steel. The original comprehensive plan included investigation of a series of steels with varying carbon contents over a wide range of heat treatments. These were to be studied as to their static tensile qualities, and also their resistance to shock as measured by the Charpy impact bending test. A thorough metallographic examination was likewise included in the schedule. The Charpy tests and the metallographic examination have not been completed to date, and are accordingly withheld for another report. All heat treatments, however, have been made, and the static tensile tests have been completed. A description of the procedure of the experiment and the results thus far obtained are therefore reported herein. Conclusions No attempt is made to draw general conclusions from these experiments, but the curves and the data are submitted as being of general importance and wide applicability. Composition of Materials An attempt was made to secure steels increasing in carbon by increments of 0.1 per cent. from 0.1 per cent. up to 0.8 per cent., and from that composition to 1.6 per cent. by increments of 0.2 per cent. Actually, however, steels of the composition given in Table I were procured, and as the carbon contents were arranged sufficiently well so that satisfactory curves could be drawn showing the relation between carbon content and other properties, these steels were used in the experiments.

Work has been carried out in the development and testing of carbon monoxide (CO) detection devices which use silica-gel impregnated with metal salts. If carbon monoxide is present, the ?detection gel? (the treated silica-gel) changes from a yellow to a blue-green or blue color. The detection gel "regenerates", i.e., returns to its original yellow color, within 4-24 hours after removal from air containing CO. The detection gel exhibits a threshold of CO response which can be adjusted over a wide range of CO concentrations, typically from 50-500 ppm in air. The preparation of detection gel using salts of palladium, molybdenum and copper is described. Also reported are the results of testing the detection gel&apos;s response to carbon monoxide under varying conditions of temperature and humidity and in the presence of some potentially interfering gases. Low levels of hydrogen sulfide (~ 5 ppm)1 nitrogen dioxide (< 7 ppm), and acetylene (> 200 ppm) were found to affect the detection gel. Temperature and humidity were also found to affect the detection gel&apos;s response. Increasing temperature shortens the gel?s response time while increasing the humidity delays the gel?s response and alters the threshold of the gel. A brief discussion of the further research and development necessary to stabilize the detection gel?s desirable characteristics is included. Descriptions of testing equipment and procedures are covered in detail.

"A mathematical model was developed for the dissolution of particles in gas-stirred liquid baths, linking the hydrodynamic flow field of the bath, the average particle trajectory and liquid-side mass transfer controlled dissolution kinetics. The model was validated by comparison with experimental data for the dissolution rates of urea particles in gas-stirred aqueous CaCl2 solutions measured during this study. The dissolution rates of urea. particles were measured using an image analysis system.The effects of operating conditions on the dissolution rates of urea particles were investigated. It was found that the key operating parameters influencing the utilisation efficiency of particles were the gas flowrate, particle diameter and lance submergence. An optimisation of the operating conditions for the model urea-aqueous CaCl2 system indicated that the utilisation efficiency increased with decreasing gas flowrate and decreasing particle size for a given lance submergence.IntroductionThe utilisation solid reagents in molten baths varies from one process to another, depending upon the rates and mechanisms of the reactions between the particles and melts, as well as the trajectory and residence time of the particles in the melts. Previous studies have not attempted to predict the utilisation efficiency of injected solids by coupling the motion of the particle with its dissolution rate. Instead, the particles have usually been assumed to remain suspended in the bath until completely dissolved, and the mass transfer coefficients were based on the average specific mechanical energy dissipation rates in the bath. Investigations of this nature relevant to the present study have been undertaken by Apelian et al. [1], Brucato et al. [2] and Langberg and Nilmani[3]. The objective of the present study was to develop a mathematical model, incorporating both the reaction kinetics between the particles and liquid and the particle motion simultaneously, to predict the dissolution rates and times of the particles. The mathematical model was validated by comparison with experimental dissolution rates of a cold model analogue system measured using an image analysis technique, and then applied to optimise the operating conditions in the model system."

This study was undertaken to make a comparison between the cost of mining coal under roof bolt and under conventional timber methods of roof support. Studies were made at 14 mines in Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern and southern West Virginia. At each mine data were obtained for sections of the mine where the physical conditions, mining equipment, and mining systems were similar. Coal, recognized as one of the basic industrial fuels, is very competitive with other fuels, and management, in order to protect and enlarge its market, must be continually alert to find more efficient methods of production. Continuous production of coal is desired by all operators but never obtained. In mechanized mining the performance and production vary with operating time, which can be interrupted by many variable factors, such as condition of the roof, method of roof support, condition of equipment, water, ventilation, power, transportation, efficiency of operating crew, and supervision.

The Lennard Shelf Operations owned by Western Metals Ltd evolved from the Cadjebut Zinc Lead Mine (BHP) in August 1994. Original production of 0.5 mtpa will rise to 2.0 mtpa at the end of 1998. Employees work a multiple of fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) rosters from the Kimberley region and the WA Capital. The three underground mines, treatment and services departments will employ approximately 300 people by the end of 1998. The expansion of the Lennard Shelf Operations as a remote mining location was based on a fresh look at management systems and employee rosters which were generated from many years of mining experience. This paper will endeavour to summarise these experiences and analyse some of their outcomes. Dealing with several mining methods, engineering difficulties, logistical problems and climate extremes, the Lennard Shelf Operations has managed social/employee issues with excellent results. Much time has been spent to get this correct for the Lennard ShelfÆs own set of circumstances. Employees and associated companies must expect continuing changes and improvement as Western Metals strives to continually improve its management systems and employee rosters.

(Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) THE Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan B. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37° 26’ 38" - north, and long. 119° 55&apos; west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 6 1/2 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 8 1/2 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence I mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills on the Merced River. His object was to undercut the deepest workings of the then paying mines on the estate-the Pine Tree and Josephine. Following this advice, the tunnel known as "River Tunnel" was commenced. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company has divided their coal mines into groups or divisions: Las Animas, Huerfano, Fremont and Gunnison counties. Each division is represented by a safety committee composed of three men appointed by the management and three men selected by the employes? representatives. The three men appointed by the management are usually from a group engaged in routine work that is primarily of a safety nature. Mr. Robert McAllister, chief mine inspector; Mr. George B. Parker, superintendent of first aid and mine rescue training; Mr. F. C. Miller, chief chemist, fuel department; and Mr. 0. C. Irwin, assistant chief electrician. The three men appointed by the management act in each of the four divisions. It is the duty of the safety commit- tee to visit each mine three times per year and make a thorough investigation of conditions underground and on top. Their report is in the form of recommendations to the management for their consideration. They are also called to investigate all fatal accidents and learn, if possible, the cause leading up to the accident and recommend precautionary measures that will prevent the recurrence. This committee inspects the haulage roads, air courses, manways, electrical equipment, ventilation, timbering, working places and humidity. In addition, each mine has a local safety committee with the superintendent acting as chairman. It is the duty of this committee to keep in daily touch with conditions underground and on top. They hold weekly meetings and discuss problems related to safety. These men work on local conditions that govern their affairs. The cost of an offshore exploration project is mainly dependent on the size of the vessel engaged for the work and increases dramatically with increasing size. Of the various factors influencing vessel size, the type and size of the sampling equipment is typically the principal consideration. This scenario is particularly true of shallow sampling programs employing a vibracore system. The problem develops when certain bottom materials such as densely packed fine sand require sampling. This type of material being one of the most difficult for the standard vibracore systems, with integral core liner, to penetrate to a reasonable depth of some five to seven meters. The problem is mainly related to the excessive cross sectional area of the cutting bit required to accommodate the core liner. The typical solution has been to apply more power to the vibracore drive head which results in a considerable scale-up for the entire system with attendant increase in vessel size. In order to reduce operating cost, M.M.R.I. has developed several systems for deployment from vessels in the 20 meter range. Two systems are modifications to the basic vibracore and a third is a vibralift system. Basically, one of the vibracore units is employed where core liners are required, utilizing a special jet bit designed to reduce the cutting pressure on the bit while not affecting the integrity of the core. Drifts are an integral component of underground mining. They provide access for men and material, means for transporting ore and rock and serve as air passageways. In view of their importance on the overall safety, economy and productivity of mines, empirical guidelines for controlled blasting design in drifts have been developed in this study. The application of the proposed concept was described by generating blast hole patterns for a mine with the help of a computer program. The mechanism of blast damage and the need for controlled blasting to alleviate ground control problems in underground mines have been outlined in this paper. The economic analysis between normal-and controlled blasting was performed based on the information from an operating mine. In addition, the review of drift blasting practices and problems in Canadian mines was also carried out in this study.
