THE high tension belt conveyor is introducing a new and tremendously expanded era of low cost bulk material handling. High tension belt conveyors are generally those installations involving very long centers, high lifts, or drops, in which the belts are stressed up to their maximum tension values, and further, where the belt construction provides tension capacity far beyond what is possible with conventional belt constructions. With these high tension installations, the magnitude of the forces involved demands careful refinement of accepted design practice in order to achieve optimum balance of all factors. No attempt will be made to evaluate the relative merits of belt conveyor haulage with other means of transportation. For present purposes, it is assumed this has already been done in favor of belt conveyor. Neither will any attempt be made to evaluate the various conveyor belt constructions now available or to balance the advantages of various types of mechanical equipment. It is also assumed that the basic haulage information on which the conveyor design is based is accurate and complete. A sustained maximum, uniform load on the belt at all times must be achieved through proper feed control and the use of adequate surge storage to level the peaks and valleys of any varying demand for the material being handled. General Belt Capacity Considerations The belt conveyor capacity tables published by various belting and conveyor equipment manufacturers vary to a considerable degree, and the ratings given are quite conservative. Of necessity, these published ratings are based on the handling of average materials under average conditions. In applying a high tension belt, all possible capacity from the belt must be obtained in order to hold its width to a minimum and thereby limit the initial cost. Two factors are involved, loading to maximum cross section area and traveling at a maximum practical speed. Belt Loading: Proper treatment of the loading of the belt will result in maximum cross section to the load, and published capacity ratings can be exceeded, sometimes by appreciable margins. On the 10-mile conveyor haul used in the construction of Shasta Dam, California, although the rated capacity of the belt line was 1100 tons per hr, at times the system handled peak loads of 1400 tons per hr, almost 25 pct better than the rated capacity. One of the large coal companies has been able to exceed rated capacity by as much as 50 pct. Loading conditions which must be controlled are: 1. Large lumps must be scalped off and rejected or the load must be primary crushed before being placed on the belt. 2. The material weight per cubic foot must be accurate, must be known for all the materials being handled, and must be known for the complete range of conditions of the individual material being handled. Long centers and high lifts magnify small differences into serious proportions. 3. Uniform feeding to the belt is most important. Various types of feeders are available, which can be used to place a constant predetermined volume of material on the belt, or, where an appreciable range of material weight exists, through electrical control actuated by current demand, to place a predetermined uniform tonnage on the belt. One long slope belt in a coal mine in Pennsylvania is being fed at three separate stations with the controls so arranged that whenever the maximum load is going onto the belt from the first station, the other two stations automatically cut out. Whenever the load from the first station drops back, the other two stations again automatically cut in. 4. Careful design of the chutes and skirts is necessary to get the load centered on the belt with a minimum of free margin along each edge. Some free margin at the edge of the belt is necessary to prevent spillage, but if the load can be kept accurately centered, this free margin area can be reduced, and more material can be carried on the belt. What can be accomplished in this respect will vary widely, depending on the nature of the material being hauled. The chute and skirt design must also protect the belt. 5. The design of chutes and skirts should also get the load traveling in the same direction and close to belt speed, so that the load comes to rest on the belt as quickly as possible. The design of the chutes and skirts is worthy of careful study, and after a system is put into operation it should be experimented with to get the best results. Belt Speed: High belt speeds should be used in high tension work. Obviously, high belt speeds enable haulage on a narrower belt, reducing initial cost. THE hard refractory borides of the transition elements of the 4th, 5th, and 6th groups of the Periodic System have been the subject of a number of recent investigations.'-' It is well known now that most of these elements form several different borides, and Kiessling8 has summarized the rules which govern to some extent the arrangements of the boron atoms in the various structures. Melting points of a few borides have been published." The systems Fe-B, Ni-B, and Co-B have been reported," but, as these borides are rather low melting, they are outside of the groups of boron compounds considered here. Brewer' has tested the stability of various borides and estimated a number of eutectic temperatures between different borides, but in no case was the complete system of a transition metal and boron investigated. The phase diagram becomes of special importance if the preparation of the borides from the elements in powdered form is considered; the lowest eutectic temperature will determine the first appearance of a liquid phase. Also, the knowledge of high temperature phases, if they exist, is important for the preparation of bodies from these borides by hot pressing or sintering. During the investigation of various metal borides,7 it was found that there were more boride phases existing in the Mo-B system than reported by Kiessling." They occur, however, only at temperatures above 1500°C and were, therefore, not found by him. This led to a study of the equilibrium diagram of the Mo-B system. ranging from 0 to 25 pct B and from room temperature to the liquidus. Part of this investigation was reported during the "Research in Progress" session at the 1952 Annual Meeting of the AIME.11 Raw Materials and Preparation of the Borides The raw materials used were commercial molybdenum and boron powder, both supplied by the Molybdenum Corp. of America. The molybdenum powder was 99+ pct pure? while the boron powder contained about 83 to 85 pct B. A large percentage of the impurities in this powder was oxygen, with the rest formed by iron, calcium, and unknown substances. The low purity of the boron used was, however, not considered detrimental to the final product, as most of the impurities evaporated at the high temperatures at which the borides were formed. The final product always had a minimum purity of 96 to 98 pct (figured as molybdenum and boron), with carbon, iron, and probably oxygen being the remaining products. Carbon is usually present as graphite. The chemical analyses always confirmed the compositions which corresponded to the crystallographic structures as determined by X-ray diffraction, and the boron content of the finished product agreed closely with that of the starting mixture; no boron was lost during the boride preparation. The chemical analysis methods employed for molybdenum and boron were previously described by Blumenthal.12,13 The powders were mixed by hand in the desired proportions, compressed at room temperature under low pressure, and then heated under hydrogen to about 1500" to 1700°C in a graphite crucible to form the borides. Usually, the three well-known borides Mo,B, MOB, and Mo,B,, which are stable at room temperatures, were prepared in this way, and all other compositions were made by mixing these borides in various ratios or by the addition of molybdenum or boron powders for the very low or very high boron contents. Preparation of two-phase compositions directly from the elemental powders was tried only occasionally to check whether equilibrium could be reached in this way. Experimental Procedures The stable borides were mixed in the desired ratios and heated under hydrogen in graphite crucibles to various temperatures. The well insulated crucibles were heated in a high frequency induction furnace. Special care was taken to obtain exact temperature measurement, which proved much more difficult than originally anticipated. It is believed that individual temperature measurements have an error of less than ±25ºC, while melting or transformation temperatures are accurate within ±50°C. The temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which was aimed at the closed end of a graphite tube extending down into the crucible. close to the samples. Attempts to measure directly through the hydrogen exit stack failed. The crucible arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. Heating was done at a slow rate to be sure that the temperature inside the crucible was uniform. The specimens were kept at the final temperature for about 30 min. For the investigation of high temperature phases, some samples were quenched. They were heated, without atmosphere protection, in a very small graphite crucible which could be rapidly removed from the high frequency coil, and dropped into water. These quenched samples were afterwards annealed to establish the equilibrium at lower temperatures. The melting points or the positions of the solidus and liquidus lines were determined by heating the specimens to various temperatures and examining them at room temperature for evidence of a liquid phase. These results were checked later on by thermal arrest curves, especially to determine the exact position of the eutectic temperature line. The principle of high-pressure interparticulate comminution has been used very successfully since the mid 1980's for grinding a wide range of different materials. A number of reports about operating experience have already been published. High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) are currently making their debut in the mining industry. Experience is being gained with test machines, particularly for the comminution of hard rock. In the grinding of diamond-bearing ore, (Fig 1) interparticulate comminution has already become the standard for liberating the diamonds from the matrix. The advantages of interparticulate comminution are also recognized for the grinding of concentrates (chrome ore, iron ore). Numerous HPGRs are being used very successfully in this field. A testing plant for first-time industrial grinding of coarse, very hard and highly abrasive copper ore was built at Cyprus Amax's plant in Sieretta, Arizona (Fig. 2). The operating experience gained here showed that the grinding of very hard ores places particularly high mechanical demands on the mill. While the machine itself meets the high availability requirements, the wear-protection system proves to be the most sensitive point. Naturally, the properties of the ore to be ground exert a considerable influence on the lifetime of the grinding rolls. This paper describes the wear mechanisms and the wear­protection systems designed to combat these.

Composite agglomeration process (CAP) is an effective method to utilize the iron-bearing dusts generated in the ironmaking plants, by which the dust percentage in the sinter feed can be increased up to 20 wt %. In the current study, a comparison on behavior of iron-bearing dust in the conventional sintering process (CSP) and CAP was characterized. The results showed, in the CSP products, the scattered iron-bearing dust in the mixture was disadvantageous for the sintering indexes and consolidation of the finished sinters. In the CAP products, the main phase in the iron-bearing dust pellets was well-crystallized Fe2O3 grain particles. In the matrix parts, there were more Fe3O4 particles generated, which caused to high RDI+3.15 and low RI of the finished products. The pellets and the matrix parts were bonded by iron oxides and acicular calcium ferrite.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The York Durham Sanitary System (YDSS) Interceptor in the Town of Richmond Hill located just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada will see the construction of a tunnel extending along 19th Avenue for a length of approximately 3.8 Km from Yonge Street, east to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. t to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. The tunnel will connect into four shafts, for which two of the shafts will be constructed using the slurry wall construction method given the high water table and difficult ground conditions encountered at these locations. The two shafts noted as Access Shaft No. 2 and No. 3 were designed and constructed to meet regulatory conditions, which required a sealed shaft construction method. GEOGRAPHICAL PROFILE The ground conditions in the Toronto region consist predominately of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits, and beach sands and gravels. The shallow geological formation found in the project area consists of four types of deposits: Oak Ridge Morain deposits, Halton Till, Glacial lake deposits and Organic soils. The Oak Ridge Morain is the dominant deposit encountered along the tunnel alignment. This formation consists of three deposits: The Upper Till, Middle Sand and the Lower Till. Standard penetration tests (SPT) carried out in these deposits measured N-values ranging from 2 to more than 100 blows/300mm which indicate very loose to very dense soil conditions. The Middle Sand deposit will be the dominant feature within the slurry wall construction at access shafts 2 and 3. Access Shaft 3 The base of the slurry wall will be 20.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be within peat and organic soils found at the upper 3 M, followed by 5 M of the Upper Till. The remainder of the excavation will be within the Middle Sand. The piezometric head elevation is found at the ground surface. Access Shaft 2 The base of the slurry wall will be 22.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be entirely within the Middle Sand 2.The piezometric head elevation is found at 7 M below the ground surface.

Hydrogen forms a beta-stabilized system with titanium, with a beta eutectoid at about 300°C and 44 atomic pct H2. 'The solid solubility of hydrogen in alpha decreases from about 8 to about 0.1 atomic pct from 300°C to room temperature. Hydrogen has little effect on tensile properties, but decreases notch-bar toughness to a large degree. This latter effect appears to be the result of increased notch sensitivity. PRIOR to this investigation, only a small amount of information was available on the effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of titanium. The effects of the other interstitially soluble elements, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, had received detailed study. Jaffee and Campbell1 indicated that hydrogen up to 1 atomic pct did not affect tensile properties deleteriously. Pitler' indicated that 1 atomic pct H, in titanium reduced the impact strength appreciably, but his alloys contained appreciable amounts of oxygen, and it was difficult to attribute the embrittlement entirely to hydrogen. The high temperature portion of the equilibrium diagram for the Ti-H system was established by McQuillan," and his data generally corresponded with the results of Kirschfeld and Sieverts," Gibb and Kruschwitz," Bevington, Martin, and Mathews," and other investigators. The lower concentration limit of the hydride phase varied considerably among investigators, and Gibb and Kruschwitz9 ad shown that small amounts of contaminants in either titanium or hydrogen caused considerable variation in this lower limit. In view of this pronounced effect of contaminants, the extrapolated value of McQuillan's, about 48 atomic pct at the 325°C eutectoid, appeared the most reasonable. McQuillan's lowest experimental value was 54 atomic pct at a temperature of 450 °C. The density of titanium had been shown to decrease with increasing hydrogen content, but discrepancies were noted among the various investigations. The best values indicated that the density was decreased from 4.56 grams per cc at 0.27 atomic pctl to 3.84 grams per cc at 61.3 atomic pct? This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of hydrogen on a titanium, both in high purity and commercially pure metals, and on high purity a titanium alloys. Material and Fabrication The literature indicated that impurities in either the hydrogen or the titanium must be kept to a minimum. For this reason, the initial studies were made with high purity iodide-refined titanium. The vendor's analysis of the iodide titanium and the hydrogen content of the as-fabricated Y4 in. diameter rods are shown in Table I. Two 1 lb ingots were prepared by arc melting under argon in a water-cooled crucible, using a water,cooled tungsten electrode. This equipment has been described.' As-cast Brine11 hardness numbers of 88 and 58 for these ingots were low enough to insure that the high purity of the metal was maintained during arc melting. The ingots were hot forged to % in. diameter rods at 800°C, cleaned by grit blasting, and then cold swaged to Yz in. diameter rods. The rod was then air annealed at 725 "C, ground to remove scale, and cold swaged to Y4 in. diameter (75 pct reduction in area). The material was then annealed for 1 hr in argon at 800°C to develop an equiaxed a grain size of about 0.05 mm. Micro tensile specimens and microimpact specimens were machined from this rod prior to treatment in the Sieverts-type absorption apparatus. Two lots of commercially pure RC-55 titanium were also used in this investigation to determine the effects of hydrogen and the normal impurities on mechanical properties. The commercially pure RC-55 alloy was obtained in the form of % in. diameter rod. The analysis of this material is also given in Table I. The % in. diameter rods were hot swaged

THERE is no question as to the importance of the part played by the retort in modern zinc smelting. A satisfactory retort should have properties that will result in resistance to slagging action and fire cracks, and have no tendency, or at least, only a small tendency, to soften and bend under furnace heat. The life and cost of a retort also are extremely important factors. The trend in zinc smelting during the past few years has been toward longer retorts and higher charge density. This is caused by the fact that the diameter is limited to 9 or 10 in. because of heat penetration difficulties in larger sizes. Consequently, increasing the length of the retort and density of charge offers the only practical means of increasing the amount of zinc produced per retort. The stiffness of a retort perhaps is the most important factor, as slag accumulates in the bottom of a retort which has sagged and very quickly cuts through, often ruining the retorts below. The development of the high-silica retort is a result of the demands made by the trend toward heavy charges.

Research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a well-point dewatering system in conjunction with a french drain to intercept waste impoundment leakage while reducing the volume of waste water requiring treatment. A well-point dewatering system composed of 585 production wells was installed around the perimeter of a leaking impoundment that previously used only a french-drain system for leakage control. The placement of the well-point system was designed to intercept and remove the leakage from the groundwater before the contaminant reached the french drain. Groundwater monitoring at this site revealed that after a period of approximately 40 days the well-point dewatering system had stabilized and effectively prevented the further spread of contamination to the french drain.

The use of on-board scrubbers on continuous miners is an important aspect in efforts to reduce the amount of dust that heading workers are exposed to. As part of the CSIR:Mining Technology's research programme to combat dust, a collaborative project with the University of Pretoria was conducted to evaluate scrubbers. Based on fundamental parameters that were identified to play a role in determining the efficiency of scrubbers, a protocol for testing scrubbers in the laboratory environment, as well as the working section, was established. Tests on various prototype scrubbers were conducted in the laboratory environment. These tests proved some of the fundamental premises according to which scrubbers were designed. By testing some of the newer scrubber types underground, insight into the effect of alternative design aspects on scrubber efficiencies was obtained. The importance of the factors which play a role in reducing the amount of dust in the air is illustrated, as well as the role which other non-design factors play in the reduction of dust levels.

Having knowledge of mechanism of magnetite formation is essential in a number of industrial processes including magnetite synthesis and corrosion of iron. In this study, magnetite nanoparticle was synthesized via two different ways; coprecipitation of iron (II) and (III) and oxidation of ferrous hydroxide. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mid-Far IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical analysis for determination of Fe II/Fe III ratio and ICP-MS for iron isotopic ratio (56Fe/54Fe) measurement. Since fractionation of iron isotopes depends on reaction rate and bonding strength, interpretation of the isotopic data with respect to the possible mechanisms is discussed. No fractionation of iron isotopes was observed for the magnetite synthesized by coprecipitation, whilst magnetite formed from ferrous hydroxide showed higher abundance of 54Fe compared to 56Fe in the beginning of reaction, implying the significance of the following reaction:

A diamond-drilling programme conducted from 1971 to 1973 by the Phelps Dodge Corporation revealed three complex sulphide ore-bodies in the highly folded Namaqualand mobile belt on the farm Aggeneys, some 65 km west of the small town of Pofadder on the road to Springbok in the northwestern Cape. Of these, the Broken Hill occurrence is the most promising.

The data on heat stroke cases reported during the past five years were examined to determine the influence of age on the incidence of heat stroke. Relating the age distribution of these cases to that of the total number of Bantu mine workers showed clearly that the older men run a significantly higher risk of developing heat stroke than the younger men. Although the number of Bantu over 40 years of age in the industry is less than 10 per cent of the total they nevertheless accounted for 50 per cent of the fatal heat stroke and 25 per cent of the nonfatal heat stroke cases during the period under review. Age must, therefore, be recognised as a causal factor in heat stroke and the worker over 40 years of age should be allocated to work on surface, or in cool areas or to non-strenuous and supervisory tasks in hot areas.

The requirements for the controllability of metallurgical processes are increasingly becoming the focus of both industry and research. Advances in this field of research not only impact the stability of processes but often also influence the quality of the final product. One important way to examine processes in-depth, and thus show potential for improvement, is to describe them using physicsdriven models. In metallurgy, thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions of interactions between individual components of a system are often used to describe and analyse important metallurgical phenomena across the entire process. However, for the creation of physics-based models, boundary conditions and process variables must be implemented to enable a description that is as realistic as possible. The collection and generalisation of boundary conditions and process variables is, therefore, an important step towards functional models. The focus of this study is the determination of mass transfer coefficients between all components in a steel/slag/refractory system. For this purpose, experimental and theoretical methods are applied. Laboratory scale experiments are carried out in an induction furnace, and the mass transfer coefficients of the defined steel/slag/refractory system are calculated from changes in the chemical composition of the various components. Additionally, a calculation of the mass transfer coefficients based on dimensionless quantities is carried out. By comparing the values of the mass transfer coefficients determined theoretically and those determined experimentally in the trials, the suitability of the calculation is examined. The collection of mass transfer coefficients provides essential findings for future kinetic descriptions of inclusion modification based on the effective equilibrium reaction zone (EERZ) approach.

This paper presents a case study in which a slope failure was observed on the west wall of the LAB Chrysotile mine in the vicinity of the main ramp in January 2010. Airborne LiDAR results were used to evaluate slope geometry before and after the failure occurred. Back analysis of the failure was performed to assess rock mass properties at the slope scale using various numerical techniques: limit equilibrium, finite elements and fracture networks. The various approaches correlated well with field observations.

The gold mining and ore processing operations of Minera Yanacocha S.A. are 10cated in an area 4,000 meters above sea level in the Peruvian Andes same 600 km north of Lima and 20 km north of Cajamarca. The joint venture partners are Newmont Second Capital (USA); Compania Minera Condesa (Peril); Mine Or (France) and the IFC. Newmont manages the operation. The Yanacocha district comprises several areas with mineralization evidence. The first ore with minable reserves of 28 million tonnes of ore assaying about 1.4 gpt Au is called Carachugo and is being mined and treated at the rate of 14,000 tonnes of ore per day by open pit mining methods. ROM ore is dump leached and the gold recovered in a Merrill Crowe plant. The plant design incorporates some unusual considerations to overcome the problems of the high rainfall in this area and assure the protection of the environment.

Mining operations in the Obuasi mine of AngloGold Ashanti Limited began in 1897 using mainly gravity concentration and amalgamation to recover the gold from predominantly high-grade quartz ores. The mine is primarily an underground operation, although some surface mining still takes place. Ore is currently processed by two main treatment plants: the Sulfide Treatment Plant (STP) for underground ore and the tailings treatment plant for tailings reclamation operations. STP was commissioned in February 1994 to treat 180 000 t/m of double refractory gold ore and it hosted the then world's largest commercial scale bacterial oxidation plant which uses Gencor's BIOX« technology. Gold is recovered by gravity and flotation, with the regrinding of the sulfide concentrate before bio-oxidation to liberate locked gold in sulfi de minerals. The BIOX« product is leached using the carbon in leach (CIL) process. Gravity gold recovery is a major component of STP operations and its contribution to overall plant recovery is about ten to 13 per cent. Gravity recovery has undergone series of technological upgrading, since the very first circuit which consisted of a Knelson concentrator and a Gemeni shaking table which was incorporated into the milling circuit at the start of the plant. Presently, each of the gravity circuits which consists of Knelson concentrator(s), cyclones and Gekko InLine Reactors (ILR), are located at the Milling and BIOX« circuits. More recently a new gravity recovery facility comprising of four 48 inch Knelson concentrators and cluster of ten inch cyclones have been incorporated at the tail of the flotation circuit. An additional ILR will be commissioned in 2010 to treat the concentrate generated from the new Semi Autogenous Mill #2 (SAG 2) Knelson: concentrator tower under construction. Since the inception of STP, significant gravity recoverable gold has been recovered via Knelson concentrators and the employed circuits have seen a number of modifications and upgrades, motivated by ore mineralogical changes and recovery concerns. The pioneering adoption of the ILR technology in 2001 and 2003 was a critical factor in enhancing the improved recovery benefit of the gravity circuits. Therefore the objective of this paper is to highlight the mine's experience in the gravity recoverable gold process with emphasis on plant modifications and gravity equipment upgrade. Operational challenges and the contribution of gravity gold to overall plant recovery are also discussed.

Results of studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines on a pilot-plant scale for removing hydrogen sulfide and carbonyl sulfide from gas mixtures by the hot carbonate system are given in this publication. Gases containing up to 10 pet. hydrogen sulfide and 48 grains carbonyl sulfide per 100 cu.ft. were treated. In most tests carbon dioxide also was present and was removed simultaneously with the sulfur compounds. Because the rate of absorption of hydrogen sulfide is much more rapid than that of carbon dioxide over a wide temperature range, selective removal of hydrogen sulfide occurred in the bottom section of the absorber near the point of gas entry. Hydrogen sulfide was removed to pipeline specifications with carbonate solutions by using split-stream flows in the absorber and regenerator.

In the first part of this paper the authors present an overview of industrial minerals produced in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, and supplied to the Pacific Rim countries. The second part outlines some of the unique opportunities for industrial minerals that exist in the three western Canadian provinces and those minerals we feel have development potential for overseas markets. Because of time constraints, it is not an exhaustive presentation on industrial minerals, but is focused on a few selected minerals that we believe have high potential.
