The storage stability characteristics of a diesel type fuel were determined to evaluate the effect of the polar compounds in the fuel. These compounds, comprising most of the nitrogen and oxygen containing compounds and many sulfur containing compounds, were separated from the fuel with a chromatographic column. This fraction was further separated into three polar extracts by graded elution through the column. Each extract was characterized. A storage program using the depolarized fuel, the fuel as received, and blends of the extracts with both fuels, was conducted. Results showed that the removal of the more polar components stabilized the fuel. Blending the polar extracts with the original fuel and with the depolarized fuel in the same ratio as they existed originally and at two and three times the original ratio increased the amount of gum present before storage, but had little effect on the formation of additional gum during storage. Distillate fuels produced by commercial refining of petroleum contain traces of organic nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen compounds that are more polar4 than the remainder of the fuel. Recent laboratory studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1),6 in which these compounds were removed from a fuel, have shown that they influence its storage stability. The objective of this work was to determine the amount of these compounds present in a fuel and their effect upon its stability in storage. To evaluate the role of these polar compounds, it is necessary to remove them from the distillate fuel. Many can be removed by chemical treatment (2), but such treatment precludes reblending the polar components to approximate the original fuel composition. Solvent extraction is free of some of the criticism of chemical treatment, but it is more difficult because of the complex mixture from which compounds must be removed.

Metal-carbon-boron powder mixtures were hot pressed and the resulting specimens were studied by X-ray diffraction. It was found that regardless of the starting combination of the metal, carbon, or boron powders, a metal boride phase was always the major component in these samples. In the absence of carbon the boride phase formed on hot pressing depended only on the amount of boron present. Two new phases of the system Ti-B were found. They are Ti2B and Ti2B5. The existence of a controversial face-centered cubic phase of formula TiB was confirmed. Electrical resistivities were measured for various boride phases. It was found that the diborides are generally better conductors than the monoborides of the same metal. THE carbides and borides of the transition elements have very high melting points, in the range 2500° to 4000°C, and are therefore of interest as high temperature materials. The literature on the stability or chemical reactivity of these carbides and borides is very scarce. Various investigators'-" have demonstrated a relative instability of certain carbide phases in the presence of boron or boron-containing substances. In a recent publication, Glaserl demonstrated the stability of zirconium-boride (ZrB,) in the presence of carbon at temperatures in excess of approximately 2900°C, while during a preliminary investigation of boride phases, Steinitz' concluded that the diborides are stable in the presence of carbon while the monoborides of the fourth and fifth group are not, forming diborides plus carbides instead. Nelson, Willmore, and Womeldorph" have elaborated on the reaction B,C + 2TiC = 2TiB, + 3C, which was known to occur because of a relative instability of B,C and the great tendency towards TiB, formation at relatively low temperatures (approximately 1200°C). A similar study, involving as starting materials TiO, and B,C and resulting in TiB,, was recently described by Honak4, who observed the beginning of an exothermic reaction of a Ti0,-B,C powder mixture, which, when preheated in a hydrogen atmosphere to approximately 950°C, was carried to about 1600 °C by the heat of reaction. To shed more light on reactions of this type (Metal-C-B), the final product apparently always resulting in a boride phase at the expense of a carbide phase," a systematic investigation was started * Boride phases of various metals, as reported to date, are listed in Table I. and the following is an account of some of the results that were obtained. Materials, Preparation of Samples, Testing Methods The raw materials employed for this work consisted of various carbide, boride, and metal powders. as well as of boron and graphite powders. In cases where commercial grades of carbides were considered unsuitable because of low purity or excessive amounts of graphitic carbon, such carbide powders were prepared by this laboratory. The procedure for the preparation of carbide powders (zirconium carbide, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, and niobium carbide) consisted of mixing graphite and the respective metal hydride powders in stoichio-metric proportions and subsequent heating of such mixtures in a hydrogen atmosphere in carbon crucibles. The heating was by high frequency to temperatures ranging between 1700" and 2100°C. The resulting carbide was then comminuted and screened to the desired particle size. ZrB, and TiB, powders were produced by the electrolysis of fused salt baths, according to the method described by Andriex.. The borides of niobium, vanadium, tantalum, molybdenum, chro-ium, and iron were obtained by mixing the respective metal and boron powders in the desired proportions. Such metal-boron mixtures were heated in a high frequency furnace to form boride powders. For each metal-carbon-boron group (Tables I1 through XI) a metal, its hydride, carbide or boride were mixed with carbon, boron or boron carbide powders. The additions of carbon, boron or boron carbide powders to any of these metals or metal compounds were calculated to satisfy a particular carbide or boride phase that according to the literature (Table I) had definitely been established by X-ray diffraction work. Samples of powder mixtures were hot pressed in graphite molds that were heated by direct conduction. The specimen dimensions were approximately 2.5X1X1 cm. Hot pressing temperatures were measured optically and maintained for approximately 30 sec under a constant pressure of about 1.3 ton per sq in. Wherever possible, an attempt to obtain maximum specimen density was made by temperature variation. Electrical resistivity testing was done by measuring potentiometrically the voltage drop over a length of 1.5 cm for a current of 10 amp, at room temperature. The hot-dip galvanising industry is the largest consumer of zinc, with over 40 per cent of the world’s total annual production of zinc used for galvanised steel. The dross generated in the hot-dip galvanising coating process is a valuable co-product, since it contains high quantities of recyclable metal. A new method to recover the metal from the industrial galvanising dross was proposed using supergravity separation. During the hot-dip galvanising process, the presence of zinc dross has a serious impact on the surface quality of the hot-dip galvanised sheet, forming zinc dross defects. To reduce the impact of zinc dross, the zinc dross on the surface of the zinc pool needs to be manually or mechanically removed at regular intervals. However, during the dross removal process, a large amount of metal zinc is inevitably carried out, resulting in low zinc utilisation rate and high zinc loss rate. This article proposes an efficient and low-cost technology for the recycling and utilisation of hotdip galvanised dross, which uses super-gravity technology to recover hot-dip galvanised dross online. The metal in the hot-dip galvanised dross returns to the zinc pot in situ, while a small part of the dross remains in the super-gravity equipment, which can reduce the amount of zinc dross by more than 60 per cent and achieve a reduction in zinc loss from 17 per cent to less than 7 per cent.

Manganese and silica in nonmagnetic tailings from the direct reduction-magnetic separation step were so closely associated that no physical concentration methods were effective. Dilute sulfuric acid dissolved manganese and iron rapidly; manganese in the form of silicates was virtually insoluble in sulfuric acid solutions, thereby governing the maximum extraction attained by leaching. Autoclave leaching at elevated temperatures and at high oxygen pressures reduced the iron extraction to less than one tenth without affecting the manganese extraction. There was an indication that autoclaving solubilized the manganese silicates appreciably. Elimination of iron from leach solutions was carried out by aerating the solution in the pH range of 6.5-7; a platinum-calomel electrode pair provided a reliable indicator for the end point of iron removal. The purified leach solutions were free of interfering impurities for the recovery of manganese as metal, dioxide, or carbonate. Manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range, Minn., are too low in iron content to be directly useful as iron ores, and too low in manganese content to be termed manganese ores. Common methods of physical beneficiation such as gravity concentration and flotation have not been successful in upgrading this material. The R-N process, when applied to manganiferous iron ores,1'2 produces sponge iron by direct reduction of iron oxides, while leaving manganese as manganous oxide. From fine grinding and magnetic separation of the reduced ore, a tailing is produced which is relatively rich in manganese and low in iron content. The nonmagnetic tailing can readily be leached with acids and then further processed to recover manganese in various forms. In this way, two processes, neither of which would be an economic solution to the Cuyuna ore problem by itself, may be combined to produce two marketable products, thereby rendering the over-all process economically more attractive. The electrochemical dissolution of super alloys containing different amounts of rhenium was investigated. The initial part of the investigation focused on the anodic dissolution of rhenium from second-generation (3% Re) and third-generation (6% Re) nickel based alloys. Exploratory electrochemical tests were conducted to evaluate solution chemistries and to establish fundamental dissolution behavior of the alloys. These included rotating disc electrode (RDE) cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, and chronoamperometry tests. Electrolytes comprising sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and ammonium sulfate were examined. Of these, a 0.1 M HCl solution proved to be extremely effective for electrochemical dissolution of samples of CMSX-4, CMSX-10, and SC-180 alloys. This paper discusses in detail the electrochemical behavior of these alloys.

INTRODUCTION In the fall of 1983, the fourth new Rapid Transit System constructed in this country in the last forty years will go into revenue service. The Baltimore Metro will bring to this major Mid-Atlantic seaport the first phase of a planned intermodal transit system, serving a metropolitan area with a population in excess of four million people. Originally, the Mass Transit Administration (MTA) considered construction of a twenty-eight mile system known as Phase 1. Its two lines would run from the center of Baltimore City, one going northwest to Owings Mills and the other south to Anne Arundel County. Legislative approval was granted in April, 1976; however, funding was limited to constructing a segment fewer than eight miles in length, along the northwest corridor from Charles Center to the Baltimore City county line. This segment is known as Section A. The project is 80% federally funded and 20% state funded, with a capital cost estimate of $797,000,000 to complete. This report addresses the development and implementation of a Coordinated Insurance Program for the construction phase of Section A, and includes a description of the associated risk management process. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF SECTION A Section A of the Baltimore Metro is composed of a rapid transit line eight miles in length which serves the northwest corridor between Charles Center in downtown Baltimore and Reisterstown Plaza at the Baltimore City county boundary. The uninitiated, first-time visitor to the Copper Cliff Smelter of The International Nickel Company frequently finds it strange that the world's largest nickel producing works is located at a site seemingly named in honour of another metal. Industry-wise persons who know The International Nickel Company through its nickel producing, fabricating and sales organizations can be just as surprised to learn that Inco's annual copper production from the Sudbury area mines nearly equals that of nickel. But when the history of the mines and smelters of the Sudbury district is reviewed it is impossible to separate the stories of copper and nickel. In fact, going even further back in time (I), it was due to the similarity in appearance of the nickel bearing mineral niccolite (NiAs) to that of copper ore that led nickel to be tagged with the rather uncomplimentary name of kupfer-nickel or Old Nick's Copper - The Devil's Copper. This was in approximately 1650 and it would take another hundred years, until 1751, before Axel Cronstedt of Sweden obtained nickel in its pure form and permitted it to take its own place in the family of metals. One hundred more years passed before mining came to northern Ontario and approximately one hundred thirty before the beginnings of development of the Sudbury Basin.

"Dome Mine's No.8 shaft is located about 1 km northeast of Dome's No.3 shaft and mill complex in South Porcupine, Ontario.No.8 shaft was brought into production in 1984 to hoist ore and waste for the complete mine as well as to service the mine from the 1600 level and below. Access above 1600 level is provided by No. 3 shaft.The rectangular shaft has six compartments consisting of two skips, a cage, counterweight, manway, and a service compartment. The over-all size of the shaft is 14 ft 7 in. by 20 ft by 7 in. (Fig. 1). A 7th compartment for shaft deepening is incorporated in the bottom 500 ft of shaft. The shaft is 5470 ft deep. The loading pocket is located at 5300 ft and the dump 61 ft below the collar.Surface facilities consist of a concrete headframe and a structural steel hoistroom which houses the cage and production hoists . The service hoist is a 12-ft diameter double drum, with one 1750 HP DC motor, and the production hoist is a 15-ft diameter double drum with twin 1750 HP DC motors.Both hoists have a single clutch and a single reduction gear train built by Orenstein & Koppel, and equipped with Canadian General Electric drives. The cage hoist is equipped with a disc pinion brake.The skips were originally aluminum 14-ton capacity, Rolla-chute design with steel liners on three sides and 4 in. of rubber on the back, to absorb the loading impact. The original guide rollers consisted of fixed 10 in. pneumatic tires. The face-to-face units were eventually replaced with larger airplane-type tires mounted on a spring loaded pivot arm."

Longwall mining appears very attractive from an engineering standpoint because of its simplicity. The use of one long, continuous face can simplify power distribution, ventilation, and supervision, and minimizes or prevents lost time associated with the tramming of equipment in room-and-pillar systems. Since the longwall system is more amenable to automation, it is inherently safer than room and pillar. Remote control of all face equipment from gate roads will obviate the exposure of men in the face area. Considering what has been said, it seems a paradox that more longwall installations are not found in the United States. However, with favorable mining conditions in relatively level seams of adequate height under shallow cover, it has been possible to develop highly productive, mechanized, room-and-pillar systems. Thus there has been no real incentive to employ longwall in the United States. In Europe, mining companies usually have very little choice between the two systems. Pitching seams of low height located at great depth dictate the use of longwall methods. With depletion of its readily accessible reserves, mining conditions will be similar to those now prevailing in Europe, and an increase in the use of longwall in the United States can be anticipated.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd., has initiated a scheme for construction of 55 flyovers in Mumbai in India. To ensure speedier completion of projects several new technologies were adopted to save time without compromising on safety and reliability. Many of the flyovers involved large diameter pile foundations carrying loads ranging from 3500kN to 1375kN. Significant time would have been lost in using conventional load testing procedure to check pile capacity apart from the difficulty in mobilizing the load and the obstruction to site movement and traffic on the adjoining roads. High Strain Dynamic Testing was introduced on the project sites in lieu of static load testing after conducting numerous co-relation studies on various project sites. A total of seven co-relation studies have been conducted till date and based on these data static testing has been replaced by dynamic testing on numerous flyovers. The paper presents the results of such studies. CAPWAP analysis was also conducted on the data to evaluate the percent skin friction and end bearing so as to improve future design parameters.

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. Exposure to airborne respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to silicosis, a debilitating lung disease. On surface coal mining and construction sites, blast hole drills are notorious sources of airborne respirable dust that may contain significant amounts of silica. The drill operator and drill helper usually receive the greatest silica exposure compared with other occupations. As a result, many drilling operations have been, and still are, on more stringent dust standards. Drilling through various rock formations naturally presents a strong potential for silica dust generation for several reasons. First, drilling is a pulverizing process that generates large amounts of very small dust particles. Second, the bailing air used to flush cuttings from the hole leaves the hole at a very high velocity and can be difficult to contain. Third, many fixed shrouds used to enclose the area beneath the drill deck have a significant amount of leakage due to 1) gaps between the shroud and ground created by raising/leveling the drill, 2) gaps in the corner seams, and 3) tom deck shrouds. CONTROLS A dry dust collection system is typically connected to the drill deck to collect dust as the bailing airflow transports the cuttings (and significant amounts of airborne respirable dust) out of the drill hole. Deck shrouds are installed in an attempt to enclose the volume around the drill steel and prevent dust escaping. However, most deck shrouds are rectangular and constructed of four separate pieces of rubber belting attached to the deck. Because of this design, there is usually a significant amount of dust escaping from the open seams as well as the open area between the shroud and the ground. This dust can be a significant source of silica exposure to drill operators as well as other personnel downwind of the drill.

In the mineral industry, the objective of a mining venture is to extract, process, and market a mineral commodity in such a manner that the profit of the venture is maximized. In a mining venture, a company normally has control over mine production scheduling, the selection and location of processing facilities (mineral beneficiation plants, smelting plants, refineries, or blending facilities), processed ore blending, and the selection of markets. The flexibility of the above factors provides many alternatives to satisfy the needs of each market with regard to quantity and quality of ore. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical model for determining the alternative that yields the maximum profit. Production planning is generally concerned with the best utilization of fixed resources, more specifically, with the determination of production and inventory levels to meet fluctuating demand requirements. A mine can be any source of ore such as an entire mine, a production unit within a mine, or an independent supplier. The objective of production scheduling is to determine the times at which each mine will be used and to allocate a required level of production. Production planning and scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of new and existing mines and processing facilities. Although the location of the mines is usually fixed, there can be considerable flexibility in locating new processing facilities, in the selection of the processing plant, and in blending the ore before and after processing.

ABSTRACT: Sublevel stoping mining methods with delayed backfill employs cemented rockfill (CRF) as a backfill material. It is used in underground mines to achieve ground control and reduce wall slough. In addition CRF serves to reduce development waste and provides a working surface for mining the upper levels. Efforts to optimize CRF practices have been published. This paper presents a detailed review of CRF practices in open stoping mining systems with reference to case studies. A new methodology is suggested in a simple stepwise approach, which can be adopted for site specific conditions. The need of laboratory testing and quality control program is discussed based on the published literature.

"For steel continuous castings, it is essential to control molten steel velocity at the meniscus, since the velocity is closely related to surface defects on the resultant products. Argon gas is supplied with molten steel into the mold through the submerged entry nozzle to prevent nozzle clogging. In this study, to investigate the influence of argon gas on molten steel flow, a numerical simulation was carried out by a two-phase model. Simulation results indicate that as argon gas bubbles ascend near the nozzle by their buoyancy, they induce the molten steel flow with them and resulted a meniscus molten steel flow from the nozzle to the narrow face of the mold. This flow direction is opposite to the case without argon gas. The calculated data are compared with the experimental data. The comparison shows generally good agreement between the measured and the calculated data. IntroductionIn a steelmaking process, molten steel carried by a ladle is first fed into a buffer vessel called tundish. From the tundish, it is then fed into a continuous casting mold. Molten steel solidifies gradually in the mold (the primary cooling zone) forming a solidified shell. As the solidified shell is just thick enough to support the molten steel at the mold exit, it is withdrawn through the mold by pinch rolls. It is progressively thicken as it is further cooled with water sprays in the secondary cooling zone. At the end of guide roll zone, completely solidified steel is cut into desirable lengths. This Bureau of Mines report is a background study of the International Tin Agreement. Attempts at stabilizing the tin market prior to the agreement are detailed, as well as the conditions and negotiations that set up the agreement. Details of the five consecutive 5-year agreements beginning in 1956 are presented, with emphasis on membership and the agreements' primary tools: the buffer stock and export controls, Attention is focused throughout on the United States activities during the period, especially with regard to its strategic stockpile, and its involvement with the agreement culminating in its membership, for the first time, in the fifth agreement beginning in 1976. Considerations leading to the U.S. decision to join are detailed, and U.S. activities in the negotiations for the sixth agreement are presented. The status and outlook for the agreement are discussed, and evaluations of the effectiveness of the agreement and its components are reviewed.

Looking for greater competitiveness, Gerdau started in 2013 the operation of its hot strip mill in Ouro Branco, being a milestone in Gerdau's history, where it definitely entered the flat products business. This mill consists of the reheating furnace, primary scaler, a Duo-reversible Quadrupole Steckel mill, accelerated cooling and final coiling. The Steckel mill works with two backup rolls and two working rolls, the backup rolls being responsible for supporting the rolling forces and the working rolls for shaping and surface quality to the strips, having as main requirement quality of surface finish. These rolls suffer high wear due to the lamination process and are exchanged with high frequency to ensure the quality of the laminated strips, after the exchange are sent to the Work Roll Shop for grinding and are positioned Grinded work rolls for the next planned change. This movement is accomplished through the crane and an exchange device that attaches to the cylinders to be transported from the Rolling Mill to the Work Roll Shop. The target in this article is focused on an improvement in this Device to increase operational safety and reduce stoppage losses downtime at the mill, improving the cost / benefit ratio and increase production.

The $980m (€750m) Dublin Port Tunnel, Europe’s biggest urban highway tunnel project, was opened in December 2006. The culmination of this immense scheme is set to transform the environment, mobility and road safety of Ireland’s capital city. This paper summarizes the key aspects of a project linking both sequential and parallel construction of individual tunnels and describes various approaches to bored, mined and pre-support cut-and-cover tunneling in a wide variety of ground types and depth of cover. Examples of innovative approaches to deal with structural and geotechnical problems while maintaining full operation of both road and rail traffic and the integrity of properties in a dense urban corridor are described.

This is the 3rd Paper in a series by this author, the first two being published at the two previous International Conferences. Since the Aachen Conference, Rio Tinto has carried out an extensive benchmarking exercise to see how we are positioned with respect to other leading companies (in our sector and other sectors of major economic importance). We need to be sure that Rio Tinto is at the forefront of best practises in Sustainable Development (SD) and is using the most effective tools and methods. This paper will present key findings from this work. Rio Tinto Minerals, working as representatives of IMA-Europe was a leading contributor to the European Commission DG Enterprise Voluntary Reporting Scheme for SD Indicators in the Non-Energy Extractive Industry. In Rio Tinto Minerals we have been using these SDIs in the management of our business and the paper will report on how they contribute to the management of our business and the paper will report on how they contribute to business value in: deepening customer relationships, eco-efficiency of operations, land use planning and permitting for new and expanding facilities, community relations, policy engagement with government authorities and strengthening the bond between the company and employees. We continue to support the Voluntary SDI Reporting Scheme, considering it to be important in the expanding EU and as a model for other regions globally. For example we have ore suppliers in developing countries and we use these SDIs in assisting them to better their performance, for we have an obligation to use our influence for continuous improvement. The paper will describe this work. Over the last 12 months our company has created a new Industrial Minerals unit called Rio Tinto Minerals which brings together all the borates, talc and salt operations, R&D, marketing, sales and customer care worldwide. The paper will present also the new Sustainability Policy of Rio Tinto Minerals.

The Ireland Mine is located some seven miles South of Moundsville West Virginia, along the bank of the Ohio River. We are mining the Pittsburgh #8 seam. This seam is approximately 60" in thickness, and is immediately overlain by some 10 feet of a conglommerate material. The roof is difficult to control, due to the fact that it frequently is composed of substances not hard enough to be held together with 6-foot roof bolts. In many cases, we must use 10-foot roof bolts, in order to get bolt anchorage in the limestone above the conglommerate. Due to the elasticity of the limestone and its tendency to bend rather than to break, we have been unable to maintain a pillar line. Thus, we have found it necessary to mine by the room and pillar system. Belt haulage is used on room entries to automatic loading stations, thence into 15-ton mine cars, controlled at the loading point by car spotters. The maximum belt length is 2,000 feet. Rail haulage to the slope-bottom dump is by 27- and 50-ton locomotives. The mine produces coal two shifts per day, with 7 production crews on each shift. Mine and machinery maintenance is performed on the Midnight shift. We handle an average of 660 tons per machine shift.
