Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine mesh screens is discussed. High frequency, low amplitude, fine mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with 'hot ferric chloride to remove Pb and Cu contaminates before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

To date Iron Monarch is the most important Australian source of iron ore and since HH5 has produced about 84 million tons of direct shipping ore containing 62 per cent iron and 3 per cent manganese.Previous geological work, mainly by Rudd, Edwards and Miles is reviewed and the results of later exploration by quarrying and drilling are discussed and modified interpretations of both stratigraphy and structure are advanced. Renewed study of the mineralogy of the iron ores is advocated.The Iron Monarch orebody lies on the up-thrown side of a major transcurrent fault that truncates it on its northern boundary. The nearby Iron Knob orebody is believed to occupy a horizon that is some thousand feet stratigraphically above Iron Monarch.The origin of the ore cannot be explained by any simple theory; development probably took place over a long period of time from Lower Palaeozoic to Tertiary.INTRODUCTIONIron Monarch orebody has supplied the Australian iron and steel industry with the greater part of its ironstone requirements since the establishment of the Newcastle steelworks in 1915. Annual production of direct-shipping ore has exceeded three million tons but declined slightly after 1956 when Iron Prince was brought into production. Total production of ore from Iron Monarch to the end of 1962 is about 84,000,000 long tons containing some 55,000,000 tons of metal.The deposit (Lat. 32°44'30"S : Long. 137°08'30"E) is 34 miles north-west of Whyalla, on the western shore of Spencer Gulf. A 42 in. gauge railway connects Iron Monarch and its associated small town of Iron Knob with Whyalla (Fig. 1).For the purpose of this paper Iron Monarch includes Iron Knob and the intervening jaspilite hill known as Substation Ridge, and the description of the general geology necessarily 'Assistant Chief Geologist, The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. "The probability of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) varies among miners in different geographic areas, coal seams, and jobs. Many studies have revealed the correlation between mineral content and the frequency and severity of CWP development still remains controversial. Furthermore, the mineral content and its variability in different areas is unknown.Since mineral content is expected to vary from location to location within a mine, between mines, between coal seams, and over time, this information will be valuable in understanding the variations in CWP incidence, as well as in establishing the appropriate kinds of dust to use in toxicological research programs studying CWP.Size-selective airborne dust samples were collected using 4-stage cassette impactors at 9 different locations in each of five coal seams. These coal seams were the Upper Freeport, Pittsburgh, Kittaning, Coal Burg, and Pocahontas. Mineralogical analyses were done by a x-ray powder diffraction photographic technique.Common minerals found in coal mine dust were illite, calcite, kaolinite, quartz, siderite, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, and pyrite. The distribution of minerals in interand intra location samples will be reported. Early results on the mineral content show wide variations between locations.in a mine and between coal seams, and small, but significant, variations between particle sizes.INTRODUCTIONIn spite of its long history of incidence, and the large amount of research conducted on it, coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is still prevalent among coal miners and needs further research to develop effective preventive and remedial measures. Although the dose-response relationship between simple CWP and coal mine dust has been established (1), the causal agent(s) and the mechanism(s) involved in the progression of simple to complicated CWP are not yet defined. Many plausible hypotheses have been made to explain the mechanisms involved in the disease progression however none of them is satisfactory. In addition, the source of variation in occurrence of CWP among miners in different geographic areas (2), rank of coal seam (3,4), and job (5) remain unsolved."

Adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylaminium hydrochloride (DAH) on Buller seam coal, New Zealand, have been studied. Both surfactants adsorb effectively on the coal below pH 8, and the adsorption isotherms established at pH 4 are essentially the same at lower concentrations. These findings suggest that the adsorption of these two ionic surfactants on coal is controlled by a hydrophobic bonding mechanism. However, the results of calorimetric studies suggest that coulombic attraction also plays a part in the adsorption mechanisms. It has also been found that both the SDS and DAH adsorbed in the first monolayer are not removed by lowering the surfactant concentrations in the bulk solution.

O objetivo desse trabalho é caracterizar o processo de delaminação, tanto em Modo I como em Modo II, de abertura de trinca. A densidade e porcentagem de fibra do compósito carbono-epóxi foram calculadas para caracterizar o compósito. O inserto, para simular o início da trinca, foi feito no processo de fabricação dos compósitos a fim de manter sua integridade. Pelo mesmo motivo o corte foi feito a jato d’água. Para caracterização da delaminação foram feitos ensaios de DCB (Double-cantilever Beam) e ENF (End-notched Flexure), segundo as normas ASTM D5528 e ASTM D790-10, sendo ambos realizados na máquina universal de ensaio MTS, capacidade de 250 kN. A fractografia em Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) foi feita a fim de identificar os mecanismos de dano durante a propagação da trinca. Foi possível concluir a fabricação do compósito, bem como do inserto, é viável. Porém, houve aparecimento de bolhas, por causa da baixa pressão da bomba a vácuo. O corte a jato d’água manteve a integridade do compósito. A rigidez alta do compósito pode ser comprovada por meio das propriedades mecânicas obtidas pelo ensaio de tração. Os valores de GIC e GIIC estão dentro do esperado pela literatura, sendo GIIC maior que GIC por causa da presença de um capo de compressão no ensaio em modo II, enquanto que em modo I é abertura pura por tração.

Control of flotation processes is mostly managed by plant operators, who assess the performance of the plant based on their own experience and other heuristic rules. These rules tend to be subjective or ill-defined, since most of them are concerned with the structure of the flotation froth, such as colour, bubble size and shape distributions, froth mobility and froth stability. These phenomena are very difficult to quantify objectively, and inexperience on the part of the operators, human error, etc., can lead to significant inefficiencies in plant operation. In this paper the development of a fuzzy system to support the control decisions of plant operators is described, which leads to significantly smoother control action and more stable plant operation than could be obtained with crisp sets of rules or manual control strategies. This lithogeochemical study demonstrates that the Gilman and Blondeau Formations in the Chibougamau area belong to a subalkaline suite of tholeiitic affinity poor in potassium. The Gilman Formation is composed mostly of basalts, with subordinate andesites and rare dacites, while the Blondeau Formation comprises all lithologies of the basalt-andesite-dacite-rhyodacite-rhyolite ensemble. Both AFM and Harker variation diagrams show that all these rocks originated by differentiation from the same magma reservoir, and are related to one volcanic episode, This study did not, however, identify hydrothermal alteration zones useful for regional geochemical prospect ion.

The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.

Investigators have reported that charges which are decoupled from the borehole wall produce different fragmentation then those which are fully coupled. The difference in effect could be as a result of energy doss during transmission across the air gap or it could be due to the change in detonation characteristics of the explosive as a result of the change in confinement on the charge during detonation. In order to better understand the phenomena of decoupling, a research project was conducted at the United States Bureau of Mines Station, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was decided to use shock and bubble energy tests along with simultaneous velocity measurement to determine the mechanics of decoupling and energy transmission. Two explosives were selected for the test, one dynamite and one water gel. Test results indicated that decoupling could both boost the total energy output of the explosive and that further decoupling would drop the energy output.

I must have made quite an impression thirty odd years ago, because now you have asked me to do it again. Of course, the picture has changed. Then they were mining uranium ore, recovering the radium from it and throwing away the uranium. Now they are still mining uranium ore, but are throwing the radium out on the tailings dumps. Thirty years ago, most people did not know what ""radioactivity"" meant. Nowadays, they have beard that it is dangerous, and some of them, recently, be-came worried about the radium in the tailings dumps and what becomes of it."

Introduction PETROLEUM seepages are known in Alaska at four localities, all on Pacific seaboard. These, named from east to west, are Yakataga, Katalla on Controller Bay, Iniskin Bay on Cook Inlet, and Cold Bay on the Alaska Peninsula. Besides these, a petroleum residue has been found near Smith Bay on the north Arctic coast of the Territory. At Katalla, Cold Bay, and Iniskin Bay there has been some drilling for oil, and in the first field several productive wells have been opened up. Alaskan petroleum so far as its composition is known, is a refining oil, with paraffin base and low sulphur content. Most of what is known of the geology of Alaska oil fields is based on the investigations of Dr. George C. Martin, of the United States Geological Survey. A. G. Maddren, of the same service, has recently made a reconnaissance of the Yakataga oil field. The data to be here presented are chiefly taken from the following publications: G. C. An explosive's velocity of detonation (VOD), can be used to indicate a number of important characteristics regarding the product's performance under specific field and test conditions. A number of new characteristic and transient VOD curves have been identified in the field, which can be used to evaluate explosive performance, control ground vibration amplitudes and frequencies, select the correct amount and type of stemming for use at the collar and in stem decks, eliminate explosive desensitization, evaluate primer performance, design air deck based blasts, evaluate contaminated explosives and to overcome post blast noxious fumes.

La unidad de producción polimetálica de Yauliyacu, ubicada en la localidad de Casapalca, Lima, tiene una presa de relaves en el paraje de Chinchan del mismo departamento. Sin embargo, dado que la presa nueva Yauliyacu culminaría su función y que la presa auxiliar Tablachaca no contaba con la suficiente capacidad de almacenaje, Centromin Perú evalúo otras alternativas para la ubicación y construcción de una nueva. De acuerdo al estudio realizado, se encontró que la quebrada de Chinchan era la más adecuada puesto que ofrecía mayor capacidad de producción y se descartó las de Corina y Tablachaca. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las características de la quebrada, el diseño del depósito de Chinchan, su proceso de construcción, la limpieza de fundación, el análisis de la estabilidad física y química, la implementación para mejorar la estabilidad de la presa, la mejora de calidad del aire en la zona del depósito, el programa de inversiones y el plan de cierre del relave.

With the prevalence of Mine Internet of Things (MIoT), different types of sensors have been widely deployed in mine sites for environmental monitoring and operational management. Currently, sensors in mine sites are mainly powered by cables or batteries. However, the deployment and maintenance of a power supply network can be difficult and expensive, and batteries have a limited lifespan. The vibration energy harvesting (VEH) technology can be used to provide power for lowpower sensors in mine sites. This presentation briefly introduces three widely used VEH methods (ie piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic). The performance of a commercial electromagnetic energy harvester (ReVibe model D) is evaluated based on the vibration of a lab vibrator (3 g, 50 Hz) and an idling SUV automobile (0.3 g, 25 Hz). Experimental results indicate that a ReVibe energy harvester can generate adequate electricity to power a sensor, and its power output depends on the load resistance as well as the vibration frequency and amplitude of vibration sources. To apply VEH to mining applications, this study also analyses the characteristics of vibration sources at the mine site based on the vibration data collected from various operating machines in a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). The vibration analysis results indicate that all the measured vibration sources in the CHPP can generate stable and abundant vibrations, characterised by substantial amplitudes (up to 5.55 g) and low dominant frequencies (ranging from 14 Hz to 25 Hz), which are sufficient for VEH.

Drilling and blasting is a popular excavation technique in the drift of underground mine. Faster completion of drift reduces the gestation period and thus longer blast pulls are attempted with longer drill holes. This compels the blasters to initiate higher charge quantity with higher confinements and ultimately results into blast-induced cracks beyond the desired periphery line of excavation. Assessment of the extent of these crack networks is difficult and often neglected. Near-field ground vibration models are often used as damage predictors (Dey, 2007, Yang et.al 1993, Holmberg et. Al 1979) but not necessarily deals with the positions of the cracks. Qualitative measurement of actual damage extent often measured using some geophysical tools, namely, P-wave velocity (Tezuka, 1995), seismic imaging (Dey, 2011), bore hole pressure monitoring (Brent and Smith, 1996), electrical resistivity (Grady and Kipp, 1993), GPR (Adams et.al, 1993) etc. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a similar geo-physical tool, which uses Electro-magnetic (EM) pulse for characterizing the medium. Similar to other geo-physical tools, GPR also comprises of a transmitter and one/multiple receivers to generate the EM pulse and receive the same after reflection/refraction from the medium(s) respectively. After its development in 1970s, GPR gained increased popularity due to its application in many important fields, namely, identification of buried objects, geological characterization, identification of geological disturbances etc. Thus, it is felt that GPR technique can be used to detect the invisible cracks inside the rockmass from the rock surface (wall and roof) itself. Understanding the same, field experimentations are carried out in an underground manganese mine in Central India, which operates on the ‘cut and fill’ method of mining at a depth of around 300m from the surface. Wedge cut blasting is carried out in the horizontal drifts of the mine using suitable blast design. A 1.6 GHz antenna was used for the GPR scanning, in which GPR transmitter transmits signals predominantly of the said frequencies. The signals get reflected back from any type of interfaces between materials in the target area, with different dielectric properties and is received by the receiver part of the ‘trans-receiver’ antenna and memorized in the Data Acquisition Unit (DAU). The data acquired is processed using a software. Ground vibration monitoring of the blasts are also carried out to develop a vibration predictor. The numerical analysis of near-field vibration predictor model results into the estimated vibration levels at the point of identified cracks. Introduction

It is not a secret that this relationship has been and is fraught with difficulties. Thus from all perspectives (M&M, society and environmental and social consultants) such a dissection, that highlights the realities, both good and bad, is uncomfortable. For this section of the colloquium to have any value, the honest but difficult approach needs to be taken.

In order to overcome weak points of steel for its engineering applications, in particular, for environmentally benign, energy-efficient, lightweight engineering systems, a number of new steels have been proposed, especially to improve strength-to-weight ratio (specific strength). Mass production of these steels, however, has encountered a serious roadblock particularly in the steel refining and casting processes. This is because their chemistries and cleanliness requirements are vastly different from those of the conventional steels, and thus an incremental improvement of the prevailing process technologies is found hard to meet the requirements. In this study, a new process is proposed, which employs inert gas bubbles in the shroud nozzle, liquid steel drops in the degassing chamber, and the siphon transport for continuous casting. The proposed process which integrates the final refining and cleaning steps prior to casting is expected to be a technologically disruptive innovation on the conventional counterpart. The effectiveness of the individual steps is discussed with experimental results.

Complete extraction of copper from Salobo chalcopyrite concentrate can be achieved in less than 10 minutes by chlorination of the dry concentrate with Cl2 at 450 degrees C and in 5 minutes by chlorination of an aqueous slurry containing 5 wt% concentrate at 30 degrees C. In general, slurry chlorination appears to be faster than dry chlorination. The kinetics of dry chlorination of copper sulphide are controlled by an adsorption mechanism with an activation energy of 6.1 kcal/mole. The rate is independent of chlorine partial pressure when pCl2 exceeds 0.4 atm. In slurry chlorination the dissolution of copper sulphide follows a topochemical reaction model and the rate of chlorination decreases with increase in pulp density and also temperature. Dissolved chlorine appears to take part in the reaction in atomic or ionic form.

Multiple data sources can be fused to improve boundary modelling in stratified deposits such as the banded iron formation (BIF) hosted deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. Accurate boundaries are essential to produce high quality geological models. Initial models are based on the widely spaced exploration hole data. This creates a high level of uncertainty in areas between the holes, with different interpretations of the boundary equally probable. Including directional information collected in these holes in the models can reduce the number of possibilities. Including data collected during mining, such as blastholes and bench measurements, can further guide the model. This research demonstrates a Gaussian Processes based method of fusing these disparate data sources to better inform the boundaries. Our results demonstrate that when only exploration points are used the model creates a smooth boundary with minimal variation between the holes. Each additional data source refined the model and added additional detail to the boundary. For the blast data, the new detail projects down to the bench below the current bench to allow for a better prediction before mining commences on that bench.
