The coal chars from northwestern part of China are characterized with high reactivity and low strength after reaction. Four type of coke-making coals selected from northwestern part of China were studied by proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, vitrinite reflectance analysis, and FTIR with curve-fitting analysis to obtain information on their chemical composition and chemical structure. The results show that the studied coals have relatively high values of final contraction of coke residue index (x) and relatively low values of maximum thickness of plastic layer (y) and average vitrinite reflectance. Based on the curve-fitting analysis of FTIR spectra, the aliphatic carbon (Cal), the aromatic carbon (Car), and the molecular structural parameters such as CH2/CH3, fa, Hal/Har, and (R/C)u are determined. The results of curve-fitting analysis indicate that the studied coals are characterized by a large amount of oxygen-containing functional groups and aliphatic side chains.

CITRON has developed a new process for the recycling of hydroxide sludge, household batteries, catalysts, automobile shredding residues, grinding sludge and other metal containing organic and inorganic waste. A pilot plant with a capacity of 1,000 tons per year has started operations in April 1998. In August 1999, an industrial plant became operational with an initial treatment capacity of 23,000 tons.

Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project's development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the 'company'. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

Geological information is essential for a diversity of public and other purposes, including land use planning, hazard mitigation, and the exploration and sustainable use of natural resources. This is especially important in New Zealand, where the complexity of the geology is due to its position on an active plate boundary - the ultimate cause of earthquakes, mountain building, subsidence and volcanic activity. The geological setting also controls the origin and distribution of New Zealand's varied mineral and energy resources. Providing information about the origin, quality and quantity of mineral resources has long been seen as a key function of national geological organisations such as the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences. Such information is essential for wise land-use decisions under the Resource Management Act. One of the major goals of the Institute is to quickly and effectively disseminate research results to interested users. The most effective and internationally accepted method of presenting geological data is by means of geological maps, which show the distribution of rock types and structural features at the surface. Most countries have ongoing gelogical mapping programmes, and in recent years the need for up-to-date, reliable information has led to a trend to accelerate basic geological mapping (eg US National Geological Mapping Act 1992; Australian National Mapping Accord 1990; Plan 2000 in the UK). Over the last 25 years, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences and its predecessors (NZ Geological Survey and DSIR Geology and Geophysics) have concentrated on detailed mapping of priority areas selected on the basis of economic and scientific interest. This has included remapping of Nelson-West Coast and Coromandel, regions with high mineral potential, for which 1:63 360 or 1:50 000 maps have been prepared.

The successful injection of liquids into subsurface permeable formations for production stimulation, storage, or waste disposal requires a rapid, precise, and accurate method of determining the permeability of porous solids. This report describes a method and apparatus, developed by the Bureau of Mines, that use the principle of specific-volume permeametry. Calibration of the apparatus over a wide range of permeabilities and standardization of several apparatus constants have eliminated many of the tedious calculations and problems of manipulation common to some other methods. Improvements in reproducibility and accuracy have resulted from reducing experimental measurements to one parameter--time. Specific permeabilities of reservoir rock samples are determined directly from a chart that relates elapsed time to a permeability equivalent to that determined by bubble-tube measurements.

Pilot plant tests of underground gold leaching from Maminskoye deposit oxide ores at a grade of 0,7 g/t Au were carried out. The underground leaching flow sheet includes Au dissolution by chlorine-containing solutions, Au adsorption from solution on active carbon, carbon concentrate ashing and calcine melting to produce high grade gold concentrate. The underground leaching system throughput was 15 m3 of solution per hour. Gold concentration in pregnant solutions was 0.12-0.13 mg/l. Gold recovery from solutions into carbon was in the range of 63-84%. It was demonstrated that the low Au recovery in the adsorption cycle was due to the presence in pregnant solutions of "active" chlorine, which destroys active carbon and causes a sharp decrease of the carbon loading capacity for gold. To improve the adsorption indices, previously dechlorinated pregnant solutions using bituminous coal or Na2S2O3, is recommended. Ion exchange process was tested as an alternative for gold extraction from dechlorinated solutions. In the testwork period, 4.4 kg of gold were produced with a chlorine consumption of 3.5 kg per 1 g of gold. During the tests a program of environmental protection measures was completed to provide the necessary safety precautions of the underground leaching works.

ONE of the important hazards in coal mining is the danger of ignition of explosive mixtures of methane and air or coal dust and air, or both, by the explosives used in blasting the coal. It has long been recognized that certain explosives are more dangerous than others in this respect. In America and abroad, government testing stations have been established for officially passing on the suitability of explosives for use in coal mines. In this country the Federal government is given no power to enforce the use of the approved explosives but merely publishes from time to time, through the Bureau of Mines, those explosives which have passed the tests necessary to place them on the list for use in coal mines. In spite of this lack of police power, the increase in the use of permissible explosives since the promulgation of the first list in 1909 has been rapid. In 1912, only 8 per cent. of the explosives used in coal mines were permissible; in 1925, this figure had increased to 25 per cent. While the past record of permissible explosives has been most gratifying, it is very desirable that we pave the way for further improvement in explosives and blasting methods by learning more about the mechanism of ignition of gas and coal dust by explosives. To this end a considerable amount of investigative work already has been carried out and a large amount yet remains to be done. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss briefly the effect of the characteristics of explosives and method of loading in the borehole on the liability of a blown-out shot to ignite explosive mixtures of gas or dust. For an account of the methods by which an explosive is tested for permissibility for use in coal mines, the reader is referred to Schedule 17-A of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

The efficient design of carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plants involves the integration of both process engineering and design engineering.Many recently constructed plants have not recognised the above interrelationship, and as such have incurred higher capital and operating costs than were in reality necessary. This has been compounded in some cases by slavishly following the design of plants where process conditions are different for the ore characteristics in question, thus perpetuating design errors that finally become industry "accepted practice".In the paper that is to be presented the unit operations of crushing, grinding, classification, leaching, adsorption, desorption and electrowinning in C.I.P. plants will be discussed with reference to the integration of process and design engineering.

This paper describes a new apparatus for continuous wet fine-screening. Its preferred size range seems to be from 0.1 to 1 mm. The supercritical trommel screen is a short cylindrical trommel of wedge-bar type construction operated at a speed greater than the calculated theoretical critical speed and at a speed lower than the speed at which particles introduced into it will centrifuge. The paper describes results obtained with the prototype supercritical trommel screen in pilot plant scale. The results point to a high capacity and simultaneously to a high sharpness of screening. Finally, an analysis is presented of the forces acting in screening on a supercritical trommel screen. In the era of high speed, high capacity processing of raw materials the conventional slowly rotating trommel screen is often considered a relic from the times passed. A typical trommel screen is the cylindrical trommel rotated about a horizontal or slanting axis at a relatively low speed. Its screening characteristics are well known. Trommel screens of various types of construction, methods of operation, performances and other characteristics have been described in detail by Taggart.1 The theoretical critical speed of a trommel screen is defined by the same well known equation as that applied for grinding mills: where ncritical = the numerical value of the theoretical critical speed in rpm, D 1 = the inside diameter of the trommel in feet, and D2 = the inside diameter of the trommel in meters. ncritical corresponds also to the centrifuging speed provided that the coefficient of friction f between the trommel surface and the outer layer of the charge is = 1.0. In a general case: From Eq. 2 it is seen that in all cases where f < 1.0 the centrifuging speed of the trommel is greater than the theoretical critical speed. The supercritical trommel screen concerns screening operations within that speed range which is between the theoretical critical speed defined by Eq. 1 and the centrifuging speed defined by Eq. 2, under conditions such that the coefficient of friction f<1.0. It is reported by Taggartl that the optimum speed of a conventional cylindrical trommel screen 36 in. in diam was experimentally found to be about 16 rpm. From Eq. 1, the critical speed of this trommel is 44.2 tpm. The indicated optimum speed corresponds to (16/44.2) x 100% = 36.2% of the theoretical critical speed. The optimum speed range based on information available seems to vary from 33% up to 45% of the theoretical critical value. The trommel screen operated at a supercritical speed: operates at a speed greater than the calculated theoretical critical speed; operates at a speed lower than the speed at which the charge introduced into it will centrifuge; operates within the supercritical speed range in such a way that the coarse fraction of the charge must slide in respect to the inside surface of the trommel; the outer layer of the said fraction next to the screen tends to proceed in the same direction as any selected point on the trommel surface, but now at a lower speed, and indeed at a subcritical speed; allows to a certain degree adjustment of the maximum determining particle size x of the fine product simply by a variation of the speed of the trommel within the supercritical speed range. With increasing trommel speed, finer and finer material only will get the opportunity to find its way into the fine product while the screen opening remains constant. In conventional practice, the low speed trommel is generally used for sizing of coarse and medium coarse material, but seldom for fine screening. The characteristic feature of the product passed through the conventional trommel is that the determining size x of the biggest particle is barely smaller than the nominal size of screen opening. The supercritical trommel screen, on the other hand, is best suited for sizing of relatively fine material. Furthermore, the characteristic determining size x of the biggest particle in the fine product can be substantially smaller than the nominal width of the screen opening or slot. South Deep Gold Mine, owned by Gold Fields Ltd., is situated near Westonaria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and mines the conglomerate bands of the Upper Elsburg reefs (Mondeor Conglomerate Formation) of the Witwatersrand Supergroup and the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) of the Ventersdorp Supergroup. The stoping and underground developments are mechanized. The Upper Elsburg reefs are mined by a variety of mining methods, including mechanized drift and fill, modified drift and bench, longhole stoping, and low-profile mining. Optimal mine design and scheduling for deep-level mechanized mining are complex, and success is highly dependent on detailed, robust, and accurate geological and geostatistical models. Geological structures significantly influence the sedimentological characteristics, distribution, and preservation of the Upper Elsburg reefs and VCR. Accordingly, particular emphasis is placed on the generation of a mine-scale structural model that accommodates the relationships between the older north-trending fault systems (West Rand and Panvlakte faults) and younger east-trending dextral wrench faults. Results from underground mapping, borehole intersections, and highresolution three-dimensional seismic data have been integrated to produce coherent three-dimensional geological models. The Upper Elsburg reefs suboutcrop against the VCR and comprise an easterly diverging clastic wedge, thickening from the suboutcrop position, to approximately 130 m at the mine?s eastern boundary. The Upper Elsburg reefs are characterized by conglomerate and quartzite bands forming multiple, stacked, upward-fining unconformity-bounded couplets. Palaeocurrent directions are dominantly from west-northwest to east-southeast, indicating that the more proximal deposits are preserved close to the suboutcrop, with distal facies to the east. Sedimentological modelling is applied to individual stratigraphic units and caters for facies definition. This is achieved through channel width (CW) kriging and fitting of type sections to borehole and mapping data. Homogenous geological geozones for each stratigraphic unit are thus defined within individual structural blocks on the basis of those sedimentological parameters that have been found to have a positive spatial correlation to gold concentration. These geozones then serve as constraints to the evaluation of the orebody. This contribution presents a summary of the modelling processes that are currently applied in the development of high-confidence, timeously produced geological models that are essential input for mineral resource estimation and mechanized mine planning and scheduling.

The ISEE Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section provides a forum for the discussion of issues related to vibration and noise from mine, quarry and construction blasting. The section began as a Technical committee in 1995 to promote the accuracy of blasting seismographs. Currently five subcommittees exist within the section: Seismograph Standards; Seismograph Testing and Calibration; Vibration Limits, Technical; Vibration Regulations; and Program and Communications. Foremost, the Seismograph Standards section wrote the first two technical standards adopted by the ISEE. The historical accomplishments, current activities and objectives of the section are discussed.

This work analyses a new approach to estimates bubble size distribution of froth surfaces using artificial neural networks (ANN).Also, the robustness of ANN to interpret images with illumination perturbations, produced by light problems or dirt attached to the window of the video camera is evaluated. The experimental work was carried out in a laboratory flotation column, instrumented with an image acquisition system. The images were processed making use of a perceptron model with a hidden layer, sigmoidal transfer function and unitary bias, and the ANN trained with a back propagation algorithm. The results of validation show that ANN are reliable for learning and producing generalized predictions of the froth mean bubble diameter and bubble size distribution, when the model is trained using a database that contains information on the illumination intensity. During the present century powerful tools have been made available through the development of ferrous and. nonferrous alloys containing such elements as molybdenum, vanadium, titanium, tantalum, and tungsten, which were little used before 1900. One of the most important of these so-called rare elements is tungsten; its use ins alloys for high-speed cutting tool is partly responsible for the era of mass production. So widespread has the use of alloys become that the period may be termed an "Alloy Age".]

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coals; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the fourth of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under phase (1) of the investigation. It covers Armstrong County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Foxburg, Clarion, Brookville, Kittanning, Bural Valley, Smicksburg, Freeport, Elders Ridge, and Indiana quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale of 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and more than 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps, Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The success of the Australian mining industry depends on the quality of its skills. High quality skills supported by a culture which demands success lead to innovations, good practices and prosperity. Average skills lead inevitably to mediocrity. Universities play an essential role in the development and use of skills but the crucial industry-university links have been subordinated to conventional academic interests in training mining and processing engineers. It is only in the area of post-graduate research degrees which are oriented towards the mineral industry that Australia can claim world leadership. Deficiencies are not due to lack of training resources, they are due to inadequate utilisation of the resources that are available. Australia can and should have the world&apos;s best mineral engineering school, with a branch in Asia where many of its customers are and close ties with South America where some of its production operations will be. Some steps which might be taken to achieve this are proposed.

The Silver Spring Transit Center is a new three-level transit center that will include bus loops for County, Metro and intercity buses, parking, and retail space. It replaces an existing bus station and connects to a busy metro rail station in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Significant site constraints in both plan and profile had to be dealt with in developing a design for support of the structure. Over 90 rock-socketed drilled shafts ranging in size from 3 to 7 foot in diameter were ultimately used to accommodate the limited space and large column loads, and to adapt to the variable rock surface at the site. Site access during design was limited due to the existing active bus station, so contract documents were adapted to include further explorations. Differences in anticipated and actual field conditions regarding the depth, quality, and variability of the rock had to be overcome in construction. Osterberg Load Cell testing during construction allowed for verification and optimization of the shaft design. Additional issues dealt with on this constrained site in an urban setting included construction staging issues, such as working around specialty contractors for tieback walls, blasting operations for rock excavation, productions issues for hard bedrock, as well as coordination issues with third parties, most notably the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority. Aspects of the foundation design and optimization, preparation of the contract documents to deal with the complicated nature of the project, and lessons learned from construction are also discussed.

The US17 Spring/Fishburne Drainage Improvements Project utilizes a stormwater conveyance tunnel system of approximately 8,250 LF. The tunnel system includes two intersecting tunnels of differing diameter at a 40-degree angle. The intersection was constructed in soft-ground conditions. This paper discusses the design, geotechnical concerns, initial ground support, and final lining construction. The tunnels utilized two soft-ground TBMs excavated at 15 ft and 11 ft with ribs & lagging initial support. The final lining consisted of unreinforced and reinforced cast-in-place concrete with polymer fibers. Concrete final lining was successfully completed in March 2020.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The USBM&apos;s data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.
