The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date and is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the use of investigations and reports of all accidents.

The heats of formation of lithium chloride and lithium oxalate were determined with the aid of a Bureau-developed, glass Dewar-type solution calorimeter which uses thermistors as its temperature sensing element. Values obtained at 298.15° K were -98.38 ± 0.54 kcal/mole for lithium chloride and -329.02 ± 0.79 kcal/mole for lithium oxalate, using graphite as the standard state for carbon.

In conjunction with the research study of the Coronation Mine recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geo-logical Sciences and coordinated by the Geological Survey of Canada, Canadian Aero Service Limited per-formed a detailed, low-altitude air-borne survey over a block of ground encompassing the .Coronation Mine. The in-phase/out-of-phase air-borne electromagnetic data are com-pared with "horizontal-loop" ground data with reference to: size and nature of conductors detected; criteria in selection of targets for drilling. In-formation provided by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company on their drilling of the numerous conductors in the area is employed in this comparison. The merits of combining a sensitive airborne magnetometer with an air-borne electromagnetic unit are discussed. The magnetic data are considered very important in assessing conductors as prospects for commercial sulphida deposits in this area of numerous electromagnetic anomalies. Biological monitoring programs for environmental protection require techniques that will provide both early detection of possible adverse effects, and assessment of the ecological significance of these effects. Monitoring techniques must include responses sensitive to the impact, that can be subjected to rigorous statistical analysis and for which statistical power is high. Such issues in baseline research of 'what and how to measure?' and 'for how long?' have been the focus of a program being developed to monitor and assess effects of mining operations on the effectively pristine, freshwater ecosystems of the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in tropical northern Australia. Application of the BACIP design, utilising a form of temporal replication, to univariate data (single species) and multivariate (community) data is described. For new ventures in Australia (such as mining), monitoring programs should be designed to establish with high probability that an impact on the ecosystem no greater than a prescribed amount has gone undetected - as opposed to simply allowing development to continue as long as 'proof' of impact is not available. Such a precautionary approach represents a shifting of the 'burden of proof' and would require with the BACIP design, a minimum number of baseline years in order to achieve some desired level of statistical power in a test for impact. Power analyses conducted on two to five years (depending upon the technique) of baseline data from streams of the ARR indicate that the BACIP design would not impose developmental constraints on mining and that a policy of reversal of the burden of proof would provide the cornerstone required for managing such development in an ecologically sustainable manner.

Matte tapping is one of the most critical operations of a matte smelter. Every smelter has developed particular matte tapping practices and tap-hole repair strategies that are often based on the experience of the smelter personnel. As a result, very little information has been published on these critical topics. This paper aims at providing the information gathered from a survey conducted in the PGM and Ni industries on matte tapping practices and tap-hole maintenance strategies for different PGM-Ni matte smelting operations.

Ni-base superalloy cast materials provide an outstanding balance of high temperature strength, fatigue resistance, oxidation resistance and coating performance and can be produced to very tight tolerances in extremely complex configurations, such as axial and centrifugal integral cast turbine wheels. As a result, cast superalloys are used in the most demanding applications of aero and industrial gas turbine engines. Use of these materials is expanding to smaller microturbine, turbojet, turbocharger and missile engine applications due to this unique combination of desirable properties. This paper will present an overview of the application of investment cast Ni-base superalloys and process capability to small turbine and missile engines.

"This work was begun in l928, with the cooperation of the American, Gas Association, and the Association contributed financial aid for that year and for the 4 years following. In 1933 financial aid was discontinued, but the Advisory Committee, under the able, Chairmanship of J. S. Haug, has continued to function through the years to the present date. Mr. Haug's annual reports have been published in the Proceedings of the American Gas Association. The purpose of this paper is to bring the index of coals tested by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (EM-AGA) method up to date, to discuss development of auxiliary tests, and to outiline the uses to which the methods have been put in promoting the war effort.COALS TESTEDThe test methods developed with the advice of the Advisory Committee had been applied to 66 coals up to 1942, and an index giving the serial number, origin, and analyses of these coals was published as Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 637. Since this paper was published, 20 additional coals have been tested; the source and analyses of these coals are given in table 1. The table also refers to publications that have been issued. Complete series of tests at high, medium, and low temperatures,have been made on most of these coals, and blending tests with 20 and 30 30 percent of low-volatile coals have also been made at 900°C.; however a few low- and medium-volatile coals (60, 70, 74, 79, and 80) were bested,at high temperatures only. Those coals were mined in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. The test work included low- and high-temperature assay tests, petrorraphic analyses, and plasticity tests since its inception; and for the last 20 coals of the series, expansion and oxidation tests have been made where applicable."

Non-ideal explosives can be characterised by different methods like velocity of detonation measurement, double pipe tests, underwater tests, aquarium tests, etc., to name a few. Both aquarium and velocity of detonation tests were selected to characterise a non-ideal explosive that is based on hydrogen peroxide, fuel, and void sensitisation. The detonation process in an aquarium of this sensitised explosive was captured at 80,000 frames per second using a high-speed camera. The explosive product was detonated using 51mm (2inches) diameter acrylic pipe charges. The product was detonated at different densities in an aquarium (cube box containing water). An aquarium provides a homogenous confinement for the detonation of explosives and more importantly, allows observing the shock wave as it changes the refraction index of water. The analysis of the video footage allowed the calculation of the velocity of detonation, pressure, gas rate release, and how the shock wave's shape in water changes with densities. It is suggested that the calculation of the rate of gas release could be related to the bubble data obtained from underwater tests.

The focus of this study was on the evaluation of hydrologic and environmental behavior observed in GeoWaste and waste rock test piles. GeoWaste is a mixture of fast-filtered tailings and waste rock prepared as a tailings-dominated mixture. The two test piles included potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock and were operated for 26 months to evaluate whether GeoWaste can suppresses sulfide oxidation and production of metal-rich acid mine drainage relative to PAG waste rock. The test piles were constructed in the shape of truncated 5-m-tall pyramids with 25-m base sides and flat 5-m × 5-m top surfaces. Water content, temperature, electrical conductivity, and oxygen concentration were monitored in four layers and at five locations within each layer in both test piles. In addition, 5-m × 5-m lysimeters were installed at the base of each pile to collect leachate. Approximately 2660 mm of water was added to the surfaces of the test piles via precipitation and irrigation (irrigation ≈ 1050 mm applied at an approximately constant rate for 70 days). The measured saturation, oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, and temperature in the GeoWaste and waste rock piles suggest more sulfide oxidation occurred in the waste rock pile compared to the GeoWaste pile. Observations from the pile experiments suggest that co-managing mine waste in the form of GeoWaste reduced acid generation compared to waste rock alone due to the lower permeability and unsaturated state of the GeoWaste pile that reduced downward migration of moisture and inhibited drainage.

The presence of salt in crude petroleum has been known for many years, but recently the percentage of chloride salts of calcium, magnesium, and sodium produced with some crude oils has increased to such an extent that the removal of the salty compounds is imperative for some refiners and their presence causes considerable apprehension for others. The exact reason for this increase of salts is not known definitely, but in all probability a combination of factors contributes to the condition. FOR the same reason that water is not missed until the well runs dry, the roles of many industrial minerals in wartime are often overlooked. In contrast to the growing shortages of many metals, our supplies of most nonmetallic minerals are limited only by our machinery for taking them from the ground and by our processing facilities. With few exceptions, the demand for increased supplies has been met without fanfare or delay. Only Brazilian quartz crystals, certain kinds of mica, and, latterly, industrial diamonds are on the so-called strategic list, although asbestos, beryl, corundum, cryolite, fluorspar, crucible-grade graphite, ilmenite, iodine, kyanite, monazite, nitrates, rutile, and zircon have caused more concern among those responsible for procurement and are included in our preclusive buying programs. Such specialties are needed urgently, but they are far less important in the over-all picture than the more abundant minerals.

Shear zones are tabular tructures which tend to occur either discordantly within, or concordantly along the margins of, competent rock masse uch as plutons, sill or flows. They contain deformed equivalents of their host rock and are common sites for gold mineralization localized in tructure oriented y tematically relative to the shear zones and internal linear fabric. Apan from genetic implications, hear zone analysis proves useful in exploration for this type of deposit because the zones are generally wider and more continuous than associated mineralization and because there is an element of predictability to mineralization geometry (i.e. vein orientation. plunge).

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an analysis of surface coal mining accidents involving mobile equipment for the years 1989 through 1991. Mobile equipment is defined as haulage trucks, front-end loaders, bulldozers, scrapers, and road graders. These five pieces of mining equipment accounted for 20 pct of all surface coal mine accidents and 41 pct of the fatalities. The general discussion of these accidents covers the accident causes, the primary activity of the accident victims, and other contributing factors. A more detailed analysis of accidents associated with each piece of mobile equipment is also provided. This report will provide mine managers and mine safety personnel with a better understanding of the hazards associated with mobile mining equipment. It identifies where improvements in mobile equipment safety can be made and those areas requiring additional safety emphasis, such as safety training, work procedure changes, or engineering changes to the equipment or work environment. The analysis was performed by a team of researchers using accident data and narratives provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

This project was started 8 June 1971. As set forth in our Proposal of 28 April 1970, responding to the RFP of 30 March 1970, the plan was twofold: 1) choose fluids and develop techniques for measuring coat porosity, and 2) construct a porosimeter for making such measurements, By the time plans for the porosimeter had been drawn up, the picture had changed; and it was found more advisable to do further researches on porosity rather than build the equipment. This development arose from a meeting with Dr. Fred N. Kissell on 14, 15 October 1971, annotated in our letter of 19 October 1971, and was contracted for 6 December 1971. The technical effort of the project was completed 7 May 1972. From the beginning it was realized that the ratio of 'hole volume to the whole volume' might be too simplistic a definition for coat porosity and that its measurement might be confounded by complications which were not yet known, We were hopeful that an exploration of fluids and techniques would provide early feedback on both these points which could be used in subsequent developments. This turned out to be the case.

"Up to the last 10 or 15 years, responsibility for accidents in mines was generally, though not universally, placed upon the person or persons immediately involved. Present-day thought is rapidly veering toward holding the industry responsible for accidents, with ultimate payment of the bill by the consumer, if financial expenditure should be necessary. While it is undoubtedly correct in principle that responsibility for accidents in and around mines should be shouldered by the employer and while it is probable that as time passes the burden will become even more definitely than now that of the mining companies, on the other hand it is an undeniable fact that large numbers of accidents occur through acts of omission or of commission of some person, very frequently the victim of the accident being the offender.Out of about 3,000 persons killed every rear in our -mines and quarries, nearly half or approximately 1,500 of the fatalities are due to falls of overlying material or of persons, about 500 to haulage, about 350 to fires and explosions, about 125 to explosives, approximately the same number to electricity, and about 300 to various miscellaneous accidents.Generally the accidents from falls involve but one or two persons at a time, and the tendency is now as it always has been to charge the victim or possibly a coworker with the responsibility. Usually this sort of accident occurs at or near a working face (statistics indicate that about 80 per cent of fatalities from falls of roof or rib occur near the face), and as it is Generally agreed that it is the duty of the worker to keep his working place safe, the worker and especially the face worker is given the blame in case of accident."

The adsorption of oleate at the surface of titanium dioxide from aqueous solutions was examined by Fourier transform infrared (FT -IR.) spectroscopy using a germanium internal reflection element coated with a thin film of TiO2. This thin film, with a thickness of 100-200 A, was deposited on the surface of a germanium single crystal by RFIDC magnetron reactive sputtering. It was found that significant adsorption of oleate from a 0.02-0.03 mM aqueous solution on the surface of TiO2 thin film occurs at neutral pH, from about pH=5.5 to pH=7.7. Adsorption of oleate at the surface of the amorphous TiO2 thin film appeared to be reversible, involving soap-acid dimers.

The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). After some 50 years of worldwide research in relation to coal pillar mechanics and design as well as numerous workshops and technical papers related to these issues there is still some significant disagreement as to the approach one should adopt in the assessment and design of a coal pillar. Of course there are many different types of coal pillars that fulfil a wide range of roles at any particular mine and in this instance it is appropriate to have a 'tailored' approach for each pillar type in relation to the role it fulfils. However where it can become very difficult for the mine operators is when various researchers or consultants use or recommend significantly different approaches for the same type of pillar fulfilling the same role. By 1999 two pillar design techniques had been developed specifically for the Australian underground coal mining industry (ie The University of New South Wales Pillar Design Procedure, UNSW PDP and Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability, ALTS) and several other pillar design techniques were being practiced by individual consultants. The Australian industry hoped to resolve the issue of what technique to use for each pillar type and role, when it funded UNSW in 2000 to develop a 'Systems Approach to Pillar Design'. The findings of the abovementioned project were published in 2005 and while every attempt was made by UNSW to include the views of various local and overseas researchers and consultants it would be fair to say that a unified approach to pillar design in Australia was not adopted as a result of that project. This is the experience of one country where there has never been one central group solely undertaking such research in relation to pillar design (such as the Chamber of Mines in South Africa). This paper explores the Australian experience in terms of pillar research and what that experience may offer to researchers in Australia and other countries. At the First Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference (2003) the first 'update' of the ALTS Design Methodology (ie ALTS II) was presented. In subsequent years the ALTS database was continually updated and significantly expanded such that it now includes detailed information in relation to both the tailgate (148 cases) and maingate belt road (58 cases). In addition to tailgate roof support and chain pillar design, the current version of ALTS (referred to as ALTS 2009) includes a maingate belt road roof support design module. This paper is also intended to update and summarise the development and application of the ALTS Design Methodology for longwall gateroad design over the last decade both directly and in the context of coal pillar research conducted in Australia over the last 15 years.

"After more than 85 years of service, a critical link between New York and New Jersey, the Goethals Bridge over the Arthur Kill waterway, is being replaced with two new parallel bridges. Each bridge includes 1,650 feet long signature steel composite cable-stayed bridge, a 2,789 feet long New York approach and a 1,889 feet long New Jersey approach. The superstructure of each approach is supported on a series of two-column concrete piers and each column is supported on a single large diameter drilled shaft varying from 4.5 to 9 feet in diameter and anchored 45 feet below ground into the underlying rock.A performance-based methodology was followed for the strength and extreme event limit states design of the drilled shaft foundations. The design for seismic loads has been performed using the AASHTO Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design. For all strength and service loads, the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications were used. Since the longitudinal and confinement requirements in the two specifications vary, the minimum longitudinal reinforcement was based on the more stringent requirements of the two codes. A design example is presented to illustrate the methodology in bridge deep foundation design using nonlinear time-history global analysis results with soil-pile interaction represented by sets of horizontal and vertical nonlinear soil springs along the drilled shaft, based on the soil and rock properties from the boreholes test results. In this paper the design methodology implements strain limits related to earthquake intensities and damage levels to calculate the capacity using XTRACT analysis, which aids designers to adopt applicable provisions that meet specific design requirements.INTRODUCTIONAfter more than 85 years of service, a critical link between New York and New Jersey, the Goethals Bridge over the Arthur Kill waterway, is being replaced with two new parallel bridges designed to carry vehicular traffic and a future mass transit corridor. The New York approach is a single structure consisting of 18 continuous spans, sloping at 4% for a total length of 2,789 feet without expansion joints. Similarly, the longest continuous portion on the New Jersey approach, with a similar slope, consists of 11 spans for a total length of 1,889 feet without expansion joints. The superstructure of each approach is supported on a series of two-column concrete piers that vary in height from 121.3 feet near the cable-stayed bridges to 11.8 feet near the abutments. Each column is supported on a single large diameter drilled shaft varying from 4.5 to 9 feet in diameter and anchored 45 feet below ground into the underlying rock."

"This paper presents an overview of the author’s experience related to the assessment of the base capacity of straight shafted and enlarged-base bored piles in sand. A design approach based on CPT qc is described which has been calibrated using a database of load tests. The importance of correct installation techniques with instrumentation are illustrated and a discussion is presented on the current use of high strain dynamic testing to validate compliance with design. An example of a recent project with high quality instrumented load test data illustrates the close match to the proposed best practice approach and also highlights the importance for consideration of the effects of stress relief for deep foundations installed in deep excavations.1 INTRODUCTIONContinuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles are the bored foundation pile of choice for sand deposits across Australia. The evolution of the determination of the base resistance of CFA piles has been shaped by available investigative techniques, calculation methods, and calibration of designs with laboratory and field testing. The Cone Penetration Test (CPT) has been widely used in Western Australia (WA) where the test has been commercially available via multiple contractors for more than 25 years. On the East coast, the adoption of CPT testing has been slower with a transition from traditional Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) still occurring. Dynamic pile load tests are often used to derive parameters. The influence of pile installation on performance is commonly misunderstood and is an important element on any discussion of pile capacity for CFA pile types. The interface between the base of the constructed pile and the in-situ soil has an influence on capacity such that a poorly constructed pile base will have limited (if any) contribution to pile performance within the normal working range, generally within a 10 mm movement. The research presented in this paper pertains to CFA piles (no drilling fluids) and enlarged base piles constructed using CFA techniques under drilling fluids such that clean pile/base interface is targeted. Developments in modern piling equipment and instrumentation allow the pressure and volume of delivered concrete/grout to piles to be accurately monitored at various stages of installation such that repeatable ‘best practice’ can be achieved. The changes in soil conditions that occur due to the disturbance of the install technique are also important.Although the results of this research are likely applicable to bored piles, the interface between the pile and in-situ soil (shaft and base) need to be considered for various installation techniques. The effects of stress relaxation (due to removal of soil above pile base and adjacent shaft), time to concreting, and the zone of disturbed soil around the pile shaft are paramount.2 INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS The pile mix (concrete/grout) and interface with the in-situ soil are also an important consideration. For example, coarse grained, poorly graded, dry, clean sand will be partially permeated by most pile mixes; such that the influenced soil will be enhanced and in instances the overall effective pile dimensions increased. Permeation of the disturbed zone of a pile or anchor shaft along with scale effects (Lehane 2009) can have significant effect on shaft capacity and shaft frictions significantly exceeding expected are not uncommon based on ‘theoretical’ dimensions. Advancements in mix technology and mix techniques also have a large influence on the pile/soil interface. The ability of the piling rig and augers to excavate a plumb and gauge hole can also have a large influence on the zone of soil disturbed adjacent the constructed pile with a resulting influence on capacity."
