FIPR-sponsored research will playa critical role in enhancing the competitiveness of the Florida phosphate industry as ore grade declines and environmental restrictions tighten. FIPR's program seeks to improve surface mining and pipeline transportation while reducing the energy cost for pumping phosphate matrix. The development of a reliable on-line analyzer and a modern process control strategy will result in improved processing efficiency. Significant improvement in overall efficiency will also be realized as the industry adopts column flotation technology. Economic acidulation of high-Insol rock will allow the industry to adopt simplified flotation flowsheets thereby reducing operating costs. Various applications of phosphogypsum would save the industry millions of dollars in constructing and closing gypsum stacks.

The close proximity of cobalt and nickel on the Periodic Table and their frequent occurrence together in nature means that their separation in primary hydrometallurgical flowsheets is not only often necessary, but requires the use of innovative chemistry to achieve high selectivity. Today, increasingly stringent demands for the high-purity cobalt and nickel salts required for battery applications in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and solar applications are again challenging the state of the art. The evolution of cobalt–nickel separations is traced from the basic precipitation technologies employed in 1960s, through commissioning of the first cobalt solvent-extraction plant in South Africa in 1974, to the commercialisation of organophosphinic-acid extractants (which provided a step-change improvement in selectivity) and their eventual widespread use in the 1980s and ’90s. This was followed later by their sulphur analogue, which enabled different possibilities for laterite processing in the new millennium. Separations in chloride media, which take advantage of the different speciation chemistries, and nickel extraction by oximes in ammoniacal systems are also discussed. More recently, chelating and solvent-impregnated resins have added further dimensions to the possibilities for flowsheet design and enabled higher purity products to be attained from both primary and secondary sources. Selected case studies and flowsheets are described.

AN accelerated trend toward mechanical mining was noted in 1940, calling for improvements in and better performance of transportation, hoisting, and ventilating equipment. One of the most interesting experi¬ments in transportation is the track shuttle-car operation first put into use by the Princeton Mining Co. in Indiana and later at the Montour 4 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. This system is based on the use of 10-ton drop-bottom mine cars operating on track and han¬dled by an ordinary gathering loco¬motive. These mine cars are loaded and taken in trips of two to a central dumping station which serves four or less loading machines. The dumping station consists of two standard chain-and-flight room conveyors, approximately 50 ft. long placed side by side approximately 4 ft. below the track from which the drop-bottom cars are dumped. These conveyors are operated at low speed and discharge into two similar elevating conveyors which operate at a higher speed and convey the coal to a trip of standard mine cars. A dumping station is usually located so that approximately 500,000 tons of coal may be handled through it before a move is required. This plan appears to have considerable possibilities for the mine equipped with small mine cars and standard locomotives since the advantages of large mine cars can be secured at a fraction of the cost required to install such cars throughout the mine. It appears logical that the future will see a much wider use of this modification in transportation.

The operation of flotation plants has been improved over the years by use of fundamentally based design techniques, a better understanding of reagent chemistry, online metal analysis and the use of digital control systems. However, optimal operation of flotation banks is not consistently achieved using manual operation. The reason for this is that the system is a highly interacting one, with changes in air addition, cell interface level and reagent dosages all being available, without it necessarily being clear as to which change should be made for a particular situation.This situation is made more complex by the fact that the feed to a flotation bank can vary in flowrate, composition and density over a fairly short period of time. It is not possible for a human operator to reject these disturbances, given the extent of the operation that is typically being monitored.Model predictive control (MPC) is a control and optimisation technique, developed in the oil refining industry, that aims to manage just such interacting multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. This technology makes use of linear dynamic models of the plant, that are experimentally derived. These models are then used in a receding horizon strategy to determine an optimal trajectory of the inputs to the system.MPC has been applied to four areas of the lead zinc flotation unit at Mount Isa mines. A total of 31 cells are being controlled by the system, which varies air to the cells, levels and reagent addition on a minute-by minute basis. The MPC controls concentrate and tail grades, reagent dosages, as well as recoveries to ranges set by the plant metallurgists.The development of the MPCs is discussed, together with the benefits realised. I have not seen this gentleman for 20 years, but I have a letter from him that I would like to read to you. 'The American Brass Co. Waterbury, Conn. May 19, 1930. To the-Salt Lake City Conference on Reverberatory Smelting Practice: Through the courtesy of Mr. Scott Turner, Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Mr. G. L. Oldright has been temporarily released from his regular duties to act as your secretary. We have asked him and Mr. McElvenny to make the necessary preliminary arrangements and to present to you at the opening session the greetings of the officers and' directors of the Institute. I am very glad that it has been possible for you to come together under the auspices of the Institute and that the acceptance of our invitation has been so very unanimous. Such an acceptance of the invitation to this meeting indicates your interest in getting together for an exchange of technical data and ideas. We anticipate that this meeting will be of real service to the smelting industry through your open discussion and exchange of ideas, and we sincerely hope that you will form an organization which will arrange for future meetings of a similar nature. Maximum fan efficiency can only be obtained when the fan has the correct combination of size, speed, and blade setting to provide the required flow of air against the mine resistance. As the mine grows older, resistance decreases unless old workings flow is restricted, and new combinations of speed and blade setting or different fan sizes may provide greater economy.

In recent years there has been a growing recognition of the impact that mining practices have on the efficiency of mineral processing operations. Head grade, dilution, particle size distribution and their variability are known to have a significant effect on the throughput and recovery achieved in mineral processing plants. Improved process monitoring and modelling have provided the opportunity to identify and quantify some of these impacts and to define very significant incentives to optimise the overall operation from the mining face through subsequent comminution and processing. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has been undertaking research to optimise æMine to MillÆ performance through a major AMIRA research project and through individual research contracts with mining companies. This work has resulted in a broad range of field and laboratory experience in terms of both the challenges and the opportunities encountered when tailoring blasting operations to suit the overall æMine to MillÆ production chain. This paper describes the objectives of æMine to MillÆ blasting to optimise the system of rock breakage involved in the blasting, crushing and SAG milling of hard, brittle ores. The design of such blasts falls outside the conventional envelope of experience for most engineers and requires the consideration of some critical factors if the objectives of such blast are to be met and some of the potential problems are to be avoided. Experience to-date has also found that the quality of implementation is critical to the success of æMine to MillÆ blasts.

The Zelazny Most Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is the largest reservoir of post–flotation tailings in Europe. The total amount of tailings from the mines in Lubin, Rudna, and Polkowice are stored each year at the disposal facility, which reaches approximately 30 million tons. It is crucial to accurately monitor and maintain such a huge storage facility, for the safety and economics of the entire region. In general, the monitoring network installed at the Zelazny Most TSF includes four groups of components: (a) geotechnical network (VW pore pressure transducers and inclinometers), (b) hydrological network (open piezometers, water level gauges, drainage discharge measurements, (c) geodetic survey network (e.g. surface and in-depth benchmarks, laser measurements, GPS measurements within GEOMOS network and (d) seismic network (e.g. accelerometer stations, cone penetration tests.) Apart from the above, chemical water analyses, tests of soil samples, monitoring of spigotting processes, and monitoring of relief wells’ discharge are also conducted. In total, approximately 2900 monitoring instruments are installed within the area of the Zelazny Most TSF. Such large amounts of data from the various information sources makes manual data analysis by the engineers almost impossible. In this paper we discuss a machine learning driven approach to improve the quality of the monitoring and maintenance of such facilities. We focus on the seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) data analysis. First, we carefully describe the collected data, its quality and availability. Then we discuss possible events that can occur in the TSF that need to be predicted using SCPT. Based on the information obtained in these two steps, the applicability of several machine learning methods is estimated. Some of them are then tested on available historical data. The algorithms described in this article will be further developed in the IlluMINEation project (H2020).

Materials in process or in stocks are quite relevant items in almost every plant, particularly in mining operations, where efficiency in rate of recovering material of interest becomes a key issue when production costs are evaluated. A manager requires information to do an effective use of the resources, especially when raw materials are involved. Losses associated to leaking, efficiency in the transformation process, performance of equipment, and operating conditions are a short list of items which must be properly identified and evaluated. Operations supervisors require information in order to keep key process variables under control. Because of these information needs, it is absolutely necessary to carry on a series of activities related with installation and maintenance of measuring equipment, sampling equipment, sample preparation, chemical analysis, statistical analysis, data handling and reports generation. These pieces of data must be managed on a wise manner in order to get the most of it, keeping always on mind data reliability. Normally, information related with metallurgical balance and even more, the metallurgical balance concept, is handled under an accounting criteria which does not allow dealing with the real world. This situation happens because the criteria utilized do not consider aspects such as bias and uncertainty associated with every measurement that affect the quality of the information and therefore conclusions drawn from it. The purpose of this paper is to give a few rules, necessary to follow, in order to develop an adequate Metallurgical Balance System for an operational point of view. The Gaussian approach for error propagation is used as a basis, allowing one to know the actual uncertainty of the balance and the way how it can be improved. A few real applications of this concept are listed, detailing experiences obtained from practice.

Grade Engineering® is a value-driven strategy aiming to maximise benefits by exploiting intrinsic grade variability of ore deposits. It utilises a multitude of separation techniques to remove low grade material before being introduced to post-blast size reduction processes, i.e. crushing and grinding. At an operational scale, Grade Engineering® techniques can be implemented at the drill-and-blast stage, to control the degree of fragmentation in accordance with the spatial distribution of valuable minerals across an ore domain through differential blasting. It can also exploit intrinsic textural and breakage characteristics of a given ore type to reject uneconomical barren material at coarse sizes, which is known as Natural Deportment. Grade Engineering® can also be employed in the deliver stage of the mining value chain through sensor-based bulk and particle sorting. Each strategy is therefore highly dependent on the responsiveness of an orebody to available techniques. That is, the extent to which Grade Engineering® drivers would be capable of unlocking potential values of currently un-amenable orebodies depends on how detailed the heterogeneous nature of ore domains can be described. This paper considers exploring possible linkages between deportment characteristics of an ore and its competence when broken in a range of energy inputs at a particlebased level. Accordingly, potential opportunity may lie in exploring whether the intensity of input energy (or degree of fineness) can be used as a lever to improve or ‘unlock’ ore amenability to Grade Engineering® techniques. Implications from such a detailed approach offers new opportunities to enhance Grade Engineering® gains through engineering ore competence variability.

A key step in changing coals to fluid fuels and chemicals is the conversion of coal to synthesis gas by gasification with steam and oxygen. As oxygen represents one of the largest single expenses in gasification, its cost is a vital factor in the economy of the process. At present, the most economical method for producing tonnage oxygen is by the conventional rectification of liquefied air. Several alternate methods have been proposed for producing oxygen from air: (1) methods based on physical or chemical sorption of oxygen from air by liquids or solids or (2) the oxidation of certain inorganic com-pounds to higher oxides unstable at higher temperature levels. Economic limitations are discussed by which these methods may be evaluated. Chelated metals of the salcomine type are promising chemical sorbents of oxygen from air. This report covers a study of the reversible sorption of oxygen by salcomine and other chelates. The presence of water in the salcomine structure was verified; it is the loss of this water that causes slow deterioration of salcomine during cycling.

"In traditional Permanent Magnet Machines, such as electric motors and generators, power is transmitted by magnetic flux passing through an air gap, which has a very low magnetic permeability, limiting performance. However, reducing the air gap through traditional means carries risks in manufacturing, with tight tolerances and associated costs, and reliability, with thermal and dynamic effects requiring adequate clearance. Using a magnetically permeable, high thermal conductivity material has the potential to improve magnetic performance, while at the same time offering performance advantages in heat transfer.Ferrofluids can be used to improve permeability in the rotor I stator gap. However, there are several tradeoffs in this approach. Fluid immersion comes with an increase in fluid friction loss compared to the windage losses of a traditional system. Isolating the rotating components from the ferrofluid can offset this effect. Also, while the magnetic effect can be positive for gap permeability, leakage flux can increase, and saturation can limit gains. These effects must be taken into account for a system optimized for ferrofluid immersion.IntroductionPermanent Magnet Machines (PMM's) convert electrical energy to mechanical energy in motor applications, or, for generator applications, convert mechanical energy to electrical energy through means of passing alternately polarized magnets past electrical coils. Looking at a simplified version of a PMM, where Rx is magnetic reluctance and <l>x is magnetic flux, we have the circuit shown in Figure 1."

The western phosphate field, comprising parts of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah, contains one of the world&apos;s largest known reserves of phosphate rock. Although phosphate-rock deposits of good-grade have been known since before the turn of the century and production has been recorded since 1906, real development of this important field did not begin until immediately after World War II. Since then fertilizer-manufacturing facilities using western phosphate rock have been expanded, and three electric-furnace plants for producing elemental phosphorus have been installed, resulting in a rise in mine production from 323,955 long tons2/ in 1945 to 1,653,916 long tons3/ in 1953. Interest in the field is increasing, and it is reasonable to expect that the western phosphate industry will continue to expand. Before 1945 all western production was from underground mines. In that year the first strip mine in the field was started near Montpelier, Idaho,~ and in sub-sequent years a number of other open-pit mines were opened in southeast Idaho and western Wyoming. At present the major part of the production comes from surface mines. Underground mining has continued, and new underground mines have been opened in the field, but recent exploration by operating companies has been aimed primarily at developing additional deposits suitable for low-cost surface mining. Preliminary reserve estimates by the Federal Geological Survey5/ indicate that only a very small part of the total resource may be recovered by surface methods and that the industry eventually must depend largely on underground mining. Because one function of the Bureau of Mines is promoting the conservation and development of the Nation&apos;s mineral resources, it is appropriate that research be conducted to develop low-cost maximum-recovery underground mining methods applicable to western phosphate-rock deposits.

The Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits had as its wartime objective the most effective immediate utilization of these resources in the interest of National security. Since the war, the results of individual projects are being prepared for publication as rapidly as practicable. Numerous chromite deposits were examined, among them those of the French Hill Mine in northern California. Situated 16 miles east of Crescent City, 76 miles from the nearest railroad shipping point at Grants Pass, Oreg., this deposit had a recorded yield of about l4,000 tons of metallurgical-grade chromite to the end of 1943. By the end of 1946, total production was more than 25,000 tons, averaging 43 percent Cr2O3, with a chrome:iron ratio of about 2.5:1.

The Heliopore process is essentially an arrangement that uses the waste heat in the exhaust gas of an internal - combustion engine to carbonize coal (noncaking ) or lignite . The gases distilled from the coal furnish fuel for the internal - combustion engine , which drives an electric generator . Thus the main products of the plant are electricity and char . A flow diagram illustrating the principles of operation of the Heliopore process is given in figure 1. The primary equipment consists of a carbonizing retort , gas cooling and scrubbing equipment, a gas storage holder, and an engine to burn the gaseous carbonization products . Coal is charged into the top of the retort while the hot gases from the engine travel upward through special ducts in the retort countercurrent to the coal flow . The hot gases never come into direct contact with the coal . Char is discharged at the bottom of the retort and hot gases at the top . The gaseous products resulting from carbonization of the coal are drawn off by an exhauster through the condensing and scrubbing equipment to take out tar and liquor , then to a gas holder , and finally are burned in a gas engine . The gas engine drives an electric generator and the engine exhaust gases are returned to the retort to carbonize coal . The entire process was intended to be continuous and self - sustaining, and to use coal as the only fuel . The plant may be said to be a large - scale pilot plant in that , although it is of full commercial size , its main purpose is to provide data for the design of others of its type . The installation tested had a daily throughput of about 4 tons of coal . Figures 2 , 3 , and 4 picture some details of the plant and equipment used in the experimental testing . Further details of the equipment and engineering drawings of the castings are shown in figures 8 to 22 in the Appendix .

Así el diálogo, la transparencia y la generación de confianza se ven fortalecidos mensualmente con la participación de Anglo American en las reuniones de la Comisión, donde se decide y se informa del trabajo y avances desarrollados para el cumplimento de cada uno de los compromisos asumidos. Así también se adelanta el cumplimiento de algunos de ellos considerados como prioritarios para la población, ya que los compromisos están asignados para diferentes etapas de la mina (preconstrucción, construcción, operación y cierre).

"Pneumatic conveying pipelines are used throughout a variety of industries, from food processing/packing to power generation plants, as an efficient means of transporting materials between storage and processing points. In general, different phases of pneumatic conveying exist when material is conveyed from point A to point B in a pipeline. This depends on the operating pressure and the material conveyed. Lean phase conveying exists when pipelines are operated at high airflow rates, relatively low pressures, inducing sufficient turbulence for particles to become entrained in the air stream. Thus, particles are conveyed along the pipelines at velocities in the range of IS-2Sm/s. Generally, the initial capital costs for lean phase system is low, however the running costs are high. The opposite is true for dense phase, high-pressure systems. In considering either conveying system, it is important that the rate of erosion of the pipeline be considered when designing such a system, since it is the rate of erosion that dictates the lifetime of components. In general, the high level of erosion occurs for lean phase flows, where high impact velocity contribute substantially to the rate of erosion as well as other processes such as particle breaking, if the particles are friable. This would lead to poor quality of material, not normally desirable. On a positive note, the process of erosion is used in other applications, which benefits from this process, e.g. abrasive guns.The failure, by puncture, of pneumatic conveyor bends in industry causes several major problems. Two of these are: (a) escape of the conveyed product causing health and dust hazard and (b) repairing and cleaning up after punctures necessitates shutting down conveyors, which will affect the operation ofthe plant, thus reducing profitability.The paper reports on modelling strategy used in the development of a modelling framework and the initial validation phases of the models incorporated within. The modelling framework encompasses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) related engineering tools, based on Eulerian (gas) and Lagrangian (particle) approaches, to represent the two distinct conveyed phases, to represent the erosion process which is used to ascertain the lifetime of conveyor bends."

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company&apos;s Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer&apos;s requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. Introduction That the coal industry has entered a new phase in its development is now evident. Coal, besides being the chief source of heat and power, has become a potential raw material for many industries. Rapid progress has been made in the methods used in the mining and preparation of coal, and in the equipment for the burning of coal. Data of a fundamental nature relating to the composition of coal and to its transformations? during combustion and processing have also been revealed. Research, the key which has opened this new era, has already accomplished much, but it has only begun to show what it may and should be able to do. New developments of coal burning equipment, super-power plants, carbonizing and briquetting plants, hydrogenation and synthetic chemical processes, will undoubtedly have a marked influence in the post-war years on the economic welfare of many coal producing countries. Until comparatively recently, however, there has been in many branches of the coal industry a tendency to regard research as something abstruse and something which had little or no value to those managing such branches. But the fact that coal has suffered as a source of heat and energy through inroads of oil, natural gas, and water power, has made it plain to the industry that, if it is to maintain its present markets in this competitive world, much less increase them, the whole industry must be willing to follow the example of other industries and plan for the future.
