I. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESULTS. The field-work upon which this paper is based was done in the summer of 1910, and was made possible by the courtesy of the Imperial Copper Co., which gave me access to its property. For their kindness in this respect I wish to express my thanks to W. F. Staunton and Meade Goodloe. Moreover,. B. F. Smith and G. B. Gentry, mining engineers in the employ of the company, gave invaluable assistance by placing maps,. etc., at my disposal, and by discussing with me the problems of the district; and it is a great pleasure to acknowledge this indebtedness to them. In order that the significance of some of the details that follow may be better appreciated at first reading, a general outline of the conclusions reached is given here. In the Silverbell mining-district a series of Palaeozoic limestone blocks is completely surrounded by post-Palaeozoic igneous rocks, intruded in the following order: alaskite, alaskite-porphyry, biotite-granite, andesite, and quartz-porphyry. The biotite-granite is believed to represent a differentiation of the. magma from which the alaskite-porphyry came ; and this conclusion-has an important hearing on the origin of the ores. The intrusion of both alaskite-porphyry and biotite-granite was followed by the emission of magmatic waters, which sericitized and silicified the alaskite-porphyry and granite, and produced in the limestone, by the addition to it of silica, iron, and alumina, great masses of garnet, quartz, and wollastonite. Following close upon these solutions came metal-bearing magmatic waters, which impregnated porphyry, granite, and alas kite with cupriferous pyrite, and deposited in the garnet zones chalcopyrite and copper-bearing pyrite that make important bodies of contact-metamorphic ores. Secondary enrichment has taken place in the disseminated ores in the igneous rocks,. raising their copper-content to 2 per cent. in some cases,. and extensive drilling has been undertaken to block out these deposits. East of the contact-metamorphic deposits there is a fissure-vein of lead-silver ore in the quartz-porphyry. This rock is distinctly younger than the alaskite-porphyry and the granite; and the lead-silver ores belong, therefore, to a period of mineralization distinctly later than the copper-deposition.

This report contains findings from a U.S. Bureau of Mines study concerning the inhibition of acid mine drainage formation from underground coal mines. A series of experiments was performed in which three different pyritic materials (wastes from coal production plants) were evaluated using several candidate inhibiting agents. Data obtained from the inhibitor-treated pyrites were compared with data from control experiments in which untreated pyritic wastes were used. The experiments were conducted by placing treated and untreated pyrite in columns, passing moist air through the columns to promote oxidation of pyrite, and washing the columns weekly to collect oxidation products for analysis. Experimental results indicate that quantities of acid mine drainage can be substantially reduced if soluble iron III (ferric) ion is controlled. The best inhibitors are neutral or alkaline siliceous materials such as fly ash, blast furnace slag, portland cement, and cement kiln dust. These materials appear to insolubilize iron III species to make them unavailable for reaction with pyrite. The data strongly suggest that the soluble ferric ion aqueous is a key oxidant for pyrite to produce acid mine drainage. The role of aqueous ferric ion as an oxidizing agent is substantiated further by data obtained using metallic iron (nails) as an inhibitor. The iron nails tended to keep the soluble iron in the iron 11 (ferrous) state. Experimental results indicate that sulfate and acidity levels are reduced when pyrite is in contact with the metallic iron.

Approximately 45% of U.S. coal is produced from underground mining. The use of diesel engines to power under- ground mining equipment has steadily increased over the past four decades in an effort to improve mine safety and productivity. Several advantages realized with the use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground coal mines are listed in Table I. The primary disadvantage of using diesel equipment in underground coal mines is that diesel exhaust emissions can contaminate mine ventilation air. The major constituents of diesel exhaust are gaseous emissions (which include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons) and diesel particulate matter (DPM). The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has incorporated threshold limit values for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust into their regulations. These have been established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

A mineral survey by Bureau of Mines personnel identified no mineral resources or mineral occurrences with development potential at prospects in the Mecca Hills Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Bentonite occurrences are in Skeleton Canyon and Surprise Canyon. Sand and gravel occurrences are numerous in and near the WSA. Much of the Mecca Hills WSA was leased for oil and gas exploration in 1983. No current mining claims or other leases were found in the study area. The Skeleton Canyon Clay Mine yielded clay to seal irrigation canals, Clay to seal ponds was also mined from the Red Top Clay Mine west of the USA. A sand and gravel pit south of the study area (near Box Canyon Wash) supplied material for local construction projects. A commercial sand and gravel pit was operating in 1983 near the mouth of Thermal Canyon 4 miles west of the WSA.

This paper describes the key circumstances of the underground coal gasification (UCG) process, which is planned to be carried out in the Polish hard coal mine ?Wieczorek?. The construction and field tests of a UCG pilot plant have key issues that need to be addressed to realize the research project goal: the elaboration of a highly effective technology of fuel and electricity production. The project will conduct several monthly tests of gasification in the pilot geo-reactor, which will be constructed based on the results of laboratory tests. The realization of the process requires numerous appropriately prepared actions adjusted to natural conditions in the hard coal deposit. Based on scientific principles, it is necessary to elaborate the procedures related to the location of the UCG installation (including its legal and safety aspects), and to perform a technical risk analysis. In addition, it is necessary to determine the required mining, geological, technical, economic and organizational circumstances, while at the same time considering the real but constantly changing process conditions.

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. Scorodite samples were synthesized, in adding or without crystal seed respectively by using Atmospheric Scorodite Process (ASP), Hydrothermal Scorodite Process (HSP), and Improved Atmospheric Scorodite Process (IASP) individually; and their crystal structure, crystallinity, morphology, particle size, specific surface area, Fe/As mole ratio, as well as the leaching stability were characterized, aimed to reveal the relationships among the synthesis methods, the compositional and structural properties, and the leaching stabilities of scorodite. The results show that synthesis methods have significant effects on the compositional and structural properties of scorodite. Scorodite samples of high crystallinity, small specific surface area, and low Fe/As mole ratio, possess high leaching stability. The order in the leaching stability of scorodite samples synthesized in this study is as follow: ASP<HSP<IASP. Scorodite particles in the sample synthesized by IASP without crystal seed are in large sizes and of pyramidal morphology enclosed mainly by crystal planes of {111}; and the sample possesses the crystallinity of 84.5%, the particle size (D50) of 28.2 m, the BET specific surface area of 3.72 m2/g, and the Fe/As mole ratio of 1.05; after leaching this sample by using acetate buffer solution of pH 4.95 for 10 days, the total arsenic concentration in the leaching solution is merely 1.14 mg/L.

High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology is growing to be a common comminution tool in iron ore processing. The technology finds a wide acceptance and presents specific benefits in coarse ore grinding and closed-circuit grinding in preparation of ball mill feed, right down to the other end of the particle size spectrum for iron ore pellet feed preparation.A growing number of minerals processing plants are facing higher operating costs and difficulties due to a scarcity of process water, which in some cases is a result of more stringent environmental constraints. In addition, many new iron ore deposits are located in more arid regions of the world. These challenges have led to operators taking a new look at dry processing of iron ores.The use of dry crushing and classification technology in cement production from blast furnace slag, clinker material or limestone feed stocks indicates that the technology may be applied in minerals processing. In addition, dry processing provides the possibility of generating a final product from finely disseminated and inter-grown ores at sizes near or well below 100 &#181;m, as may be required for beneficiation techniques such as in fine magnetic separation, flotation or magnetic flocculation.Dry grinding by HPGR has a number of specific features, challenges and opportunities, including balancing power input, moisture content requirements and classification efficiency in the process design. HPGR parameters and the latest HPGR design and sizing capabilities indicate considerable potential benefits from this dry processing technology.This paper highlights some of the specific issues that play a role in dry HPGR application, with respect to energy and materials balances. An overview of hydrate properties is given, with emphasis on unusual deviations from ice, the most common solid water form. Reliable sample preparation and reproduction of in situ hydrates provide the foundation for all hydrate science and engineering. Relations are given to connect the three domains in the title: (1) micro-scopic properties measured with Raman, NMR, and diffraction spectroscopy, (2) meso-scopic properties measured with single crystals, and (3) macro-scopic properties measured with pressures, temperatures, volumes, etc. A principal illustration relates micro-scopic and macro-scopic domains. Experiments provides the basis for improving statistical thermodynamics model for these compounds. To date, this model is one of the most commonly used industrial statistical thermodynamics applications, based upon the classical model of van der Waals and Platteeuw (1959). Microscopic measurements and simulations indicate model assumption improvements, resulting in the next generation of the statistical thermodynamics for improved macroscopic property prediction.

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies were designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena.4 This report is the fifth of a series5/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the constant pressure flame temperature of acetylene-air for a range of pressures.

Coal Services (Health and Safety Trust) funded ARRB Transport Research Ltd to investigate fatigue and performance of truck drivers over consecutive shifts. The main questions were to assess: What is the most important contributor to acute fatigue in mining? Is it length of shift (eg eight hours versus 12 hours) or is it time of day (eg circadian effects)? What is the limit of successive day or night shifts before chronic fatigue affects operator performance in open cut mines? The project methodology included utilising ARRB Fatigue Monitoring Devices (forced-choice stimulus reaction) in eight haul trucks, testing 24 subjects over several weeks. Each subject filled in a Fatigue Risk Questionnaire on lifestyle and health. Operators worked a 14-night, one day off, 13-day roster of 12-hour shifts in a fly-in/fly-out operation with excellent opportunities for restorative sleep between shifts. A total of 3500 hours of real-time data was collected, representing the first set of objective, real-time driver performance data for Australian mining. The data showed that for a single night of driving haul trucks, there appears to be no effect on operator fatigue from the amount of time on task (for the 12 hours). In fact performance was worse through the first eight hours than the last four. The circadian influence had a stronger affect than working more than eight hours. Of the 14 nights worked at the site, nights 13, 14, seven and two respectively, were the worst. This presents a conundrum for policy makers who may like to place caps on working hours or rosters in the hope that it will alleviate the fatigue issue. It will not. The major finding within this study is the combined influence of circadian rhythms (human body clock) and individual variability on performance. The lifestyle habits and the health of individuals have a profound effect on operator performance as shown by the strong positive correlation between high fatigue risk scores from the Fatigue Risk Questionnaire and poor performance. An individualistic approach would appear to have the best chance of reducing high potential incidents due to fatigue through successive nightshifts.

Exploration, including research, has fuelled the enormous expansion of the Australian mineral industry in the last three decades. Analysis of success and failure in exploration and research has therefore potentially powerful lessons and messages which may be used to influence the future shape and direction of the mineral industry. Research has been an integral part of organised corporate mineral exploration since its beginnings in Australia in the 1930s. In corporations, the activity generally called project generation or new project development is the main expression of exploration research but mostly it goes unidentified and poorly documented except perhaps when a successful discovery is made and reported on. The competitive nature of exploration means that extended and detailed analysis of corporate exploration research across the industry is impossible to achieve.

This paper presents a successful case history of the ground improvement efforts and excavation of twenty-three cross passages between twin bore tunnels driven by EPB tunneling machines in Los Angeles, California on Section 1 of the Westside Subway Extension. Unique and complicated ground conditions local to the tunnel alignment include San Pedro sands, siltstone/claystone Fernando Formation, and zones of “asphalt impacted soils.” To provide water cut-off and soil stabilization, jet grouting was performed prior to TBM excavation at the location of many of the cross passages. However, upon investigating the cross passages prior to excavation, the subsurface conditions required additional measures and SEM tools to ensure successful completion of the project.

I. INTRODUCTION. THOSE who deem the subject of this paper an old and super¬seded one may recall with advantage the words of the great proverb-maker, bidding us to seek the new in the ashes of the old. The manufacture of wrought-iron began with the small hearth built upon an eminence, and relying on the wind for blast. Next came, either the hearth about 12 in. in diameter by 2 ft. in height, blown by a man operating two goat-skins for bellows, or, a hearth of greatly varying diameter and about 10 ft. high, depending for its blast upon natural draft. The former appeared in India, the latter in Burmah; and both were in operation until quite recently, though their origin is lost in prehistoric times. The Catalan forge was the evolutionary descendant of the foregoing, and the parent of the Blase-ofen, which in turn led to the high bloomary or " Stückofen," the father of the blast-furnace, as a producer of cast-iron. The production of cast-iron checked the growth of the direct processes; and led to the introduction of various hearths, such as the Walloon, for low-silicon irons; and the South Wales process, combining the run-out fire with the finery, for higher-silicon irons. Some of these are still in operation in localities possessing the necessary raw materials; and their product is used for purposes requiring wrought-iron of exceptional quality, the supply of which is still smaller than the demand. We have to look back but a century and a quarter to see the introduction of the puddling process by Henry Cort; a process which, reinforced by the iron-oxide bottoms and fettling of Hall, was not less revolutionary in character, and more revo-

Mine-to-mill improvements can be initiated at any stage, but it is our assertion that drilling accuracy is a practical anchor in any operating mine or quarry for a structured continuous improvement process. This paper will: 1. Define deviations from plan and provide some best practices for maintaining drilling accuracy. 2. Introduce tools and methods to monitor and calculate consequences of accurate versus inaccurate drilling. 3. Demonstrate the use of these tools and methods and their impact on one cost item, the mitigation of oversized material by a hydraulic hammer. 4. Provide recommendations for implementing improvements.

Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved that by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate can be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there been an indication that this method may become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-steam distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming loss as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes the construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractionating column and gives certain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production of lubricating distillates. The apparatus was designed and built to produce lubricating distillates under as nearly ideal conditions as possible, in order that a subsequent study of the characteristics of the distillates could be made. For example, a study could be made of the distillates obtained up to the point of cracking of the charge if a topped crude were charged to the still; if the still was used as a rerun unit for lubricating distillates a study of nearly the entire charge could be made. Only topped crude has been charged to the still so far, and therefore this paper is limited to the results obtained from the distillation of such a charge. The results so far obtained indicate that such an apparatus is valuable in a study of different crude petroleums as sources of lubricating distillates.

A multiyear, comprehensive study of flotation reagents used in phosphate beneficiation was conducted. The study involved the evaluation of pure fatty acid compounds, comparison of various anionic collectors and testing of iso-acids. Various C12 to C22 fatty acids were tested as Florida phosphate collectors. The saturated fatty acids were found to be very poor collectors when using the standard conditioning procedure, whereas the unsaturated C16 to C22 fatty acids showed fair to good phosphate collecting ability. The C18 fatty acids oleic, impure oleic and linoleic and the C20 eicosenoic acid were shown to be the best phosphate collectors. The best flotation results were obtained using Liqro GA tall oil and oleic acid. Four isostearic/iso oleic acid type fatty acid collectors were compared with a commercial grade oleic acid and with Liqro GA tall oil as phosphate collectors using standard laboratory conditioning and flotation procedures. The most selective collector evaluated was Century 1108, a high isostearic acid-type reagent. However, it was concluded that this excellent-performing reagent was too expensive for commercial use. Overall, the most promising reagent was probably Century MO-5. This collector is essentially an iso-oleic acid/stearic acid mixture (not isostearic acid), and it costs much less. This program laid a sound foundation for developing single collector, all anionic flotation processes.

New Mexico is the leading domestic producer of perlite, a hydrated volcanic glass that can be expanded thermally to form a white, very porous, lightweight material. The United States is the leading consumer and producer of perlite in the world (Pettifer 1981). New Mexico produced, at five mines (Fig. 1), about 86% of all domestic crude ore mined in 1984 (Meisinger, 1985). Perlite is mined in 6 other western states, ore is expanded in 33 states, and the expanded ore is consumed in all states (Meisinger, 1985). Gross value of domestic ore mined in 1984 was about $16,500,000 (FOB mine; Meisinger, 1985) with much value added by expansion and processing prior to sale to end users. In contrast to the ubiquitous nature of perlite products in the U.S. economy, facilities for testing perlite ore, expanded perlite, and perlite products are notably lacking on a commercial, cost-effective, or readily accessible basis. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Min¬eral Resources (NMBM&MR) established a perlite¬testing facility in 1984 to mitigate this lack and to further the mining of perlite in the state.

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba&apos;s foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. The Coast Range subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) extends from the Canadian border north of the community of Skagway, southerly to Tracy Arm. It is bounded by the international boundary on the north and eastern edges. The Ferebee Glacier and Lynn Canal mark the western boundary, extending south to the Berners Bay region. From Berners Bay south, the western boundary is the eastern boundary of the Juneau Gold Belt (fig. E-l). The city of Skagway (fig. E-2) is the only developed community within the confines of the subarea. Skagway was originally established as a port for the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Recently, Skagway has gained prominence as a port for shipping goods into and mineral products out of Yukon Territory (fig. E-3). Skagway has also developed a thriving tourist industry based on its Alaskan traditions. The community of Skagway maintains a paved airstrip which is suitable for use by small multi-engine aircraft. Several regional air carriers serve Skag-way with frequent scheduled flights, especially during the summer months. Helicopter charter services are available from Skagway during the summer months.
