Introduction The importance of coal in our economy is well established, but it may not .be so generally realized how important a part it plays in our daily life. Select a product - any product - and, if it is made in America, bituminous coal has touched it first. Everywhere we will find coal, derivatives of coal, or functions made possible by coal. Apart from the well known major uses of coal for domestic purposes, coking, utilities, railways, and manufacture of steel and cement, there are over 200,000 products derived from coal, from lipstick colours to nylon products and perfumes. An item of interest is the recent action of the Canadian Government in voting $90,000 for development of coal deposits in Yukon Territory to make coal available to the settlers in that area. The value of this move, in case of some emergency, is very evident. Coal in its several stages of formation as peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, semi-bituminous, semi-anthracite, and anthracite, has been used for centuries. Coal, as such, was not very well known to the ancients. First reference to "magic stone', or coal, was in 371 BC by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle. This substance was said to burn like wood coal or charcoal and was used by the smiths. The first record we have in modern times was in 852 AD, when sea coal was gathered by the cowled monks of Durham, in Britain, and even at that time a major problem was transportation. Our first record of coal in this continent was near Richmond, Virginia, in 1700. Commercial mining was not under way, however, until 1750. The anthracite fields (presumably in Pennsylvania) were opened in 1793. Even so, there was no extensive mining until about the year 1820. The famous Pocahontas coalfields were opened in 1883. The earliest record of coal mining in Canada is about 1746.

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase

EAF slag chemistry and its control have been recognized as important in producing quality steel at a low price for a number of decades_ EAF steel producers make lime and dolomite additions to furnaces, controlling the CIS ratios and sulfur pickup from the steel. Existing phase diagram data at 1600°C for CaO, MgO, FeO, SiO2, and Al2O3 was used to write a computer model optimizing slag chemistry for slag foaming and reduced refractory wear. The model, its development, and its use in an industrial steelmaking environment will be discussed along with how the model can improve energy efficiency. The importance of EAF mass balance to account for critical materials like Si in scrap and refractory wear using the model will also be emphasized_

BHAS, together with the G.K. Williams Laboratory, and Ausmelt Pty. Ltd., has examined a number of possible alternatives to conventional silver cupellation in gas fired reverberatory furnaces. Of these alternatives, a Sirosmelt furnace was preferred for both technical and economic reasons. Small scale work on Sirosmelt processes was carried out at the G.K. Williams Laboratory at Melbourne University in 1985/86. Pilot scale work was carried out at the Ausmelt plant in Melbourne in July 1987. Board approval for construction of a full size plant was received in October, 1988, and construction of the plant is currently underway. The plant is expected to provide significant savings in operating costs and silver inventory. Hygiene around the furnace should also be greatly improved. An increase in cupellation rate of at least ten times is expected, compared with the conventional reverberatory furnace.

IN the study of the coals of Illinois now being carried on by the State Geological Survey, an attempt is being made to determine the most satisfactory basis of comparison between different coals. The following discussion is based upon work done for the survey in the laboratories of the State University and under the general direction of Prof. S. W. Parr. " Pure coal " has been defined by Mr. A. Bement1 as ash- and moisture-free coal, and the use of this " pure coal " as a basis for comparing different bituminous coals has lately been much discussed among engineers in the middle West. By some the B.t.u. of the pure coal is being used to check calorimetric results, and to calculate the calorific value of different coal-samples from the same seam, for which purposes it is necessary to assume-first, that the composition and calorific value of pure coal from different parts of the same coal-seam are uniform, and, second, that these values remain constant after the coal is mined, both of which assumptions there are reasons to believe are inconsistent with the facts. Certain variables are included in pure coal, as ordinarily defined, and disregard of them may lead to serious error. In any event, where delicate shades of difference are involved, no sure interpretation of results can be made, unless these variables be eliminated. As a basis of comparison between coals, ash- and moisture-free coal is much to be preferred to " dry coal," and still more is it to be preferred to " moist coal," as ordinarily reported in analyses. "If the final goal of metallurgy is the extraction of metals from a given ore, everyone knows that this achievement relies on many separation steps involving much more than a biphasic material made of metal and gangue. Nevertheless, still today, most of the design and follow-up of industrial processes only consider metal grades; in best case metal grades per size class. Working with such heterogeneous material, made of several minerals, with different grain size and texture, implies to consider finer ore models to be able to predict the behavior of material and the subsequent operation performances. Analytical tools are now available to provide such relevant and accurate data which are applied in geometallurgy. To achieve a true geometallurgical approach for process design, but also for optimization, accurate process simulation absolutely needs to combine these fine ore models with the corresponding unit operation models. Based on generic, but configurable, criteria of description and a hierarchical approach, the material modelling tool embedded in the USIM PAC process simulator provides the necessary flexibility to describe any type of ore with almost no limit in the level of details and associated physical properties that can be met in the mining industry. The simulation engine and the mathematical models of unit operations are designed to manage such a diversity of material modelling. The paper present various ore models and some of their applications in flowsheet simulation. It proves the interest of this detailed and advanced approach to accurately predict plant performances. INTRODUCTION Process simulation used for process design and optimization requires accurate unit operation modeling. During the last decades, main efforts of the different teams developing software simulators have been dedicated to those models for comminution and physical separations such as flotation or gravity concentration (Kojovic et al., 2012, Soni and Yoon, 2014). In most case, the ore is modelled with a size distribution and metal or mineral grades. A water phase is considered for wet processes. The association of unit operations and such material models generally allows, after some parameters adjustment, to achieve good agreement between experimental and simulated data. The use of the obtained simulator to test alternative configuration of circuits or settings of equipment devices can be accurate enough as far as the ore processed is close to the ore used for simulator adjustment. However, when the ore gets very different grades, coming from different mineral proportions or grain sizes, the simulation results can be of poor accuracy. Because any physical separations such as gravity, magnetic or flotation, do not sort metal and gangue but particles, made of minerals, containing metals, the only way to be accurate enough for allowing extrapolations, is to model particles. The phase model tools embedded in the USIM PAC process simulator gives this possibility. However, as such level of details are not always available for analyses, the tool has been designed with a high level of flexibility, to adapt the model to the available data. In this paper, the principles of this conceptual modelling tool are presented, and some application cases illustrate the material model flexibility and its interest."

"The localized uniform conditioning (LUC) technique was proposed by Marat Abzalov in 2006. The technique converts conventional uniform conditioning (UC) grade-tonnage curves into single grade values attached to each smallest mining unit (SMU). This is achieved by ranking the SMUs within a panel in increasing order of their grade (based on the direct kriging of SMUs). This ranking is then used to localize the conventional UC grade-tonnage curves for each panel by dividing them into classes and computing their mean grades, which are assigned to the SMUs. The quality of this localization process will depend heavily on the validity of the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs. Abzalov noted that where the distribution of data available for the direct kriging of the SMU is characterized by strong short-range variability, the advantages of using the LUC approach may be more limited. Consequently, a study was undertaken to determine how valid the predicted grade patterns of a typical Birimian-style gold deposit (with high nugget effect and strong short-range variability) might be expected to be. This was determined by comparing the direct SMU kriging ranking (based on sparse data) with the grade control model ranking (based on close-spaced data and the best available estimate of the deposit). The results showed a satisfactory correlation between these rankings and it was concluded that, although the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs may be less meaningful for deposits exhibiting strong short-range continuity, there is nevertheless a convincing relationship with the actual (or best available) rankings. Therefore, the LUC technique is still considered to be useful for this style of deposit. IntroductionFor adequate technical and financial evaluation of a project, attempts should be made to estimate the recoverable resources – the portion of the in situ resource that can be economically extracted by mining. To achieve this, the estimates of the tonnage and grade of the mineralization should be produced above a given economic cut-off and should take into consideration the proposed mining selectivity."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted studies using microwave energy to stress-crack iron ores. In a microwave chamber which simulates a continuous throughput operation, the Bond grindability of a taconite sample was improved by 13 pct at a bulk temperature of 197? C. To further improve the economics of microwave fracturing, higher powers up to 16 kW were used to rapidly heat samples to relatively low temperatures in a continuous belt-fed applicator. A significant enhancement of grindability was obtained with a minus 1.9-cm taconite rod mill feed. At a sample temperature of 130? C, the grindability was improved a maximum of 26.1 pct over the non-microwaved sample.

The results of laboratory, bench-scale and semi-commercial investigations of a method for adding surfactant (technical-grade lignosulphonate) to the process of pressure leaching of nickel-containing pyrrhotite concentrates have been discussed. Lt has been demonstrated that feeding of technical-grade lignosulphonate distributed along the length of an autoclave ensures a reduction in its requirement by a factor of 1.5 to 2 as compared with single-point feeding; it also results in a decrease by 5% in the unit requirement of metallized iron-bearing precipitator in the process of non-ferrous metals precipitation and reduces by 0.05 to 0.1% (abs.) the nickel and copper contents in the tailings of the given process. Technical solutions have been proposed for commercial introduction of the process.

"The aim of the present paper is to use the two CFD codes to model the two phase flow in a water model ladle with central gas injection. The codes examined are CFX and Phoenics. An Eulerian two phase model is used and predictions are compared against the experimental data available. The results show that the codes can reasonably well predict the gas-liquid plume in the ladle, and predictions are generally in a good agreement with experimental data. However, differences do exist in predicting the gas volume fraction and velocity profiles. The results should be interpreted most carefully and cautiously, because they are very sensitive to the boundary conditions and dependent on the models for the physical phenomena involved. IntroductionSubmerged gas injection has widely been used in the metallurgical industry for more than a century. At the present, the use of gas is most effective in steelmaking industry where the advantages of the gas injection have already been long well understood. Effective mixing, large contact area between reactants, easy modifications and flexibility of the processes are the most important advantages. Disadvantages include refractory wear, blocking in the tuyeres, and splashing. These disadvantages can be reduced and advantages further improved by studying the flow phenomenon in process vessels. However, it is difficult to study flow in a real vessel because of the high temperatures and physical and mathematical modelling is therefore increasingly used in the process development work."

Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

PDB refers to the way a construction project design is developed by the Owner and the Design-Builder in a step-by-step process. According to the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), Progressive Design-Build allows the design and construction team to collaborate during the earliest stages of project development. This enables engagement between the three key players in a construction contract: the owner, the designer, and the contractor. Is the PDB the best alternative program delivery for large contracts? What is the perspective of the private sector? This paper will provide an overview of the different alternative delivery programs used in the underground industry, pros and cons of each of programs, and the perspective of the designers and contractors. The paper will focus on how the PDB works, reasons why owners should consider PDB for their projects, best collaboration strategies among owners, designers, and contractors to deliver a successful project, and how to manage the project risks using a PDB method.

FROM the old-fashioned " grab-sample " to the modern timing- . device, which takes a machine-sample with mathematical precision, there is a wide gap which was only crossed' by many years of toil and unremitting endeavor. Even to-day, notwithstanding the advancement in the art, "grab-sampling" is still practiced-sometimes to afford the unscrupulous mine-promoter a basis for fairy-tales with which to entrap the too-gullible investor, and often by milling and smelting companies to determine the amount of moisture in custom-ores. The latter practice is almost as reprehensible as the former, and it causes more trouble and ill-feeling between seller and buyer than all other factors put together. No reputable concern to-day would think of attempting to determine by grab-sampling the amount of gold, silver, lead, or copper contained in an ore, and yet many buyers expect the miner to accept the results of grab-sampling in the determination of the amount of water contained in the ore, forgetting that accurate results are just as necessary here as in the determination of the metals, because the result determines the percentage of weight of the ore which shall be excluded and considered to have no value whatever. Samples for the determination of moisture should be taken with as great care as samples for the determination of. metallic content, and in order to avoid the extra expense of a separate operation moisture-samples should be taken from the sample-safe. As the sample reaches the sample-bin in a smaller stream and by a more circuitous route than the "reject" travels in its path to the outgoing car, it loses more moisture en route, and a constant should be added to compensate for this difference. Carefully-conducted experiments have shown that the difference in loss of moisture between the two routes does not exceed 10 per cent. in summer and 7 per cent.. in winter. For instance,
