The ever -present danger of mine fires and the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions in underground mines make a well-equipped mine rescue station a valuable asset to any mining district . Rescue equipment without proper maintenance provides only false security , because neglect may make the apparatus unfit for use in an emergency . Promptness in fighting mine fires is important ; frequently the first 30 minutes of action are worth many hours later . Likewise , the equipment will be of little value if enough men trained in its use are not readily available . This circular points out how such protection has been provided in an Arizona mining district by establishing a well- organized , adequately equipped , central mine rescue station. ·

Environmental issues and how they are addressed -- or not addressed -- by the lead industry in the 1990s will determine the eventual fate of lead mining in both the U.S. and worldwide. Clearly, governmental regulation throughout the West will become harsher. Equally clearly, the industry has? failed to educate the public regarding lead. Instead of public support for a critical mineral, we face widespread public ignorance and paranoia. If we can demonstrate the public interest benefits of the industry, the 1990s will be a decade of continuing growth -- not dynamic growth, certainly, but growth at least comparable to the world economy. If, however, we fail to demonstrate the industry's public interest benefits, the 1990s could mark the beginning of the end of our business.

Process modeling for large deformation metal forming processes has been developed into a very successful tool in commercial applications during the last two decades. DEFOR.MTM is a well-known metal forming process simulation program used by many industrial and research institutions. Recent developments include the ability to model multiple deforming body behavior during multi-pass pack rolling and microstructure prediction during multi-pass shape rolling. This paper summarizes how DEFOR.MTM can be applied to a number of rolling processes and briefly describes preliminary work carried out using the ALE technique. "Improving the safety of underground openings and optimizing ground support systems requires reliable ground characterization. This includes understanding the joints, discontinuities, and rock strength. Joint information can be obtained from borehole cameras, but measuring in-situ rock strength is very difficult. Use of borehole probes can be an ideal and efficient way to meet this requirement. This paper discusses the development of the Rock Strength Borehole Probe (RSBP) and presents the preliminary laboratory/field test. This device can be an accurate, flexible, quick, non-disruptive, and cost-effective alternative to estimate the rock strength inside boreholes in underground mines and tunnels. In addition, the scratch testing procedure in the laboratory by means of a newly developed miniature linear cutting machine is explained. Based on the results of these tests, two equations are developed to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of the sedimentary/metamorphic rocks. These equations, are based on testing 27 different sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks by full-scale scratch tests, including the cutting tests by a miniature disc. The results show a good correlation between the normal force and the compressive strength of sedimentary rock if the depth of the scratch is known. No significant correlation was observed for igneous rocks, due to the impacts of grain size.INTRODUCTIONEstimated rock mass properties are essential input for geomechanical studies and stability analysis for any structure constructed in or with rock. The availability of geological information is the crucial component of rock mass classification. One of the important parameters in evaluating rock mass properties is the intact rock strength. This parameter is usually measured by testing the core samples, obtained from exploration boreholes. These samples are subsequently tested in geomechanics laboratories. The test results offer limited information about the rock at the few boring locations despite all the efforts and costs. In addition, these results may not necessarily be representative of the behavior of the rock in the field as the test cannot provide the insitu condition of the ground."

"Prereduction and flux-aided direct reduction of chromite provide significant advantages in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during ferrochrome production. In this investigation, a comparative evaluation of the influences of several alkali fluxes was carried out based on experimental observations supplemented by advanced material characterization and thermodynamic predictions. Direct reduction of a chromite ore with alkali fluxes at 1300°C for 1 hour produced (Cr,Fe)7C3 type alloys with Cr/Fe mass ratios from 0.7 to 2.3. Among the alkali fluxes, reduction aided by NaOH resulted in a high degree (85%) of Cr metallization with the ferrochrome alloy being Cr4.2–4.6Fe2.4–2.8C3. The formation of liquid slag, which facilitated Cr metallization, was limited by the formation of NaAlO2 between 800 and 1300°C. This, in turn, restricted the collection and transport of the charged ionic Cr species (i.e. O2–) to graphite particles. Under the conditions studied, ferrochrome particles were often small and largely unliberated, which would make the physical recovery of ferrochrome challenging. At 1400°C, the amount of liquid slag increased, enabling the growth of alloy particles. Direct reduction of chromite aided by NaOH is promising as an alternative technology to conventional flux-based smelting in electric arc furnaces. IntroductionConventional smelting processes are energyintensive (Riekkola-Vanhanen, 1999) with the energy requirements greater than 4 MWh/t (Naiker and Riley, 2006; Beukes, van Zyl, and Neizel, 2015), and the greenhouse gas emissions can be significant, exceeding 10.5 t CO2 per ton Cr in ferrochrome produced (International Chromium Development Association, 2016). These include emissions occurring on-site (smelter), emissions due to electricity production, and emissions due to upstream processes. Overall energy requirements are influenced by the degree of prereduction and smelter charge temperature. Significant reduction in electricity consumption can be realized if the charge is prereduced before feeding to the submerged arc furnace (Niayesh and Fletcher, 1986). This consideration has led to the development of several prereduction technologies, with the most important example being the Premus process. In comparison to the conventional smelting processes, this prereduction process lowers the overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by about one-third (Naiker, 2007)."

In terms of underground tunnelling in metres advance per capita, Australasia compares well with the best world performers. This is because of the large number of metalliferous mines, coalmines and civil tunnelling projects, with the Australian tunnel advance for civil and mining projects exceeding 625?km/a. In terms of hard rock quarry extraction, Australia produces approximately 200?Mt/a of aggregates, roadbase, fill material and specialist rock products from its quarries, which equates to approximately 8?t/capita. Australian mining and tunnelling contractors are also of world standard and are used to excavating in a variable range of ground conditions in a competitive environment. One author has been involved in tunnel and underground space planning and quarrying in Australia for the past 25 years and predicts that, over the next 20 years, there will be a major swing towards underground space for commercial uses. This paper identifies the potential uses of underground commercial excavation and the planning and geotechnical challenges for the future. Underground quarrying creates new opportunities to extend existing quarries within their urban footprint with minimum impact on the surrounding community. Investigations by the authors reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. However, cities such as Helsinki have been planned in detail to utilise the rock resources beneath them. Zinc sulphate electrolyte used for zinc electrowinning must be purified for cObalt ions. The cobalt is removed in a cementation stage by the addition of zinc dust. Copper arid antimony are frequently used additives which enhance the cementation of cobalt. This paper aims at a better understanding of how copper and antimony promote the removal of cobalt. Initial experiments were done in a batch cementation reactor. Copper and antimony precipitated in the early stages of cementation indicating that a preferential substrate was formed. The individual role of copper and antimony was further investigated in an electrochemical cell. On a microsca1e, the , growth process, morphology and the composition of the precipitates were examined with SEM and XRD. It was found that cobalt could not be deposited in its pure form but as a cobalt-zinc alloy with zinc as the prime constituent. Copper increases the cathodic surface area of zinc dust by precipitating as numerous dendrites. Antimony acts as a cathodic surface onto which a cobalt-zinc alloy with an increased cobalt content is deposited.

Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. This work presents a thermodynamic analysis of a monazite system and discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extractions and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80% were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1%, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is an important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate, or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced, the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. In all honesty I was apprehensive about addressing such a body if it was highly geared to the technical aspects of discovering and obtaining mineral resources. I was told that this would not be the case. Rather, there would likely be in attendance a broad cross section of people from business, industry and government and from across Canada and the U.S.A. Thus there would be an interest in a free-wheeling discussion of the prospects for industrial development in Cape Breton. Accordingly - being one who hates to miss an opportunity - I intend to exploit the invitation of your executive by being, over the next short while, frankly promotional. I would like to talk about what I consider to be some of the most important attributes of Cape Breton for industrial development and identify some of those prospects. Secondly, I will quickly review some of the things the Cape Breton Development Corporation is doing these days to stimulate some of that industrial development."

In October 2013 JSW Steel decided to place an order to Primetals Technologies Austria (former Siemens VAI Metals Technologies) for the installation of a comprehensive Level 2 process optimization system for more than 20 existing production facilities of various suppliers. For SMS-I new L2 systems are provided for two hot metal pretreatment stations, three hot metal desulphurization stations, three ladle furnaces, two 1-strand slab casters, a ladle tracking system as well as a shop supervisory system. Additionally the existing L2 system for one 1-strand slab caster is being upgraded in the course of the project. In SMS-II new L2 systems for the 7 hot metal desulphurization stations, 4 ladle furnaces, 1 new RH vacuum degasser, ladle tracking system and a shop supervisory system are supplied. Despite of the challenging time schedule the commissioning of the single facilities started within less than 12 month after contract effectiveness. The installed Level 2 process optimization systems together with the achieved results are described in this paper.

Recent developments in expanded PTFE membrane filter cloths offer high flow rates and sub-micron particle removal. These high strength, industrial grade filter cloths can be tailored for tubular filters, leaf filters and rotary vacuum drums. Filtration techniques using tubular filters make possible filtration of difficult slurries with the elimination/reduction of filter aids and chemical additives. This paper describes principles of surface filtration, applying the membrane filter cloth and comparisons to gravity separators. Benefits to the mining industry include clear effluent, enhanced solids recovery and accelerated cost payback.

Projects as regards state-of-the-art mechatronic systems aiming at increase of safety in the mining industry and at improvement of coal production technologies, which have been completed at the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology, are presented. These projects cover automation, monitoring and visualization systems, systems for implementation of artificial intelligence techniques, and database recording systems. iRIS system for electronic marking, identification, and recording of components of powered roof supports, which was implemented in 31 Polish mining enterprises, is presented as an example of the work directly associated with an increase of operational safety. Specialists from KOMAG, ELSTA, Ltd., and Silesian University of Technology in Poland, have developed flexible, configurable, and scalable system for data management, which refers to all fixed assets of mining enterprises, meeting the requirements of users as regards marking and identification of fixed assets. The system for control of roadheaders using intelligent algorithms, based on artificial intelligence techniques is also the example of innovative actions. This system aims at increasing the safety and effectiveness of teamwork due to a possibility of remote, semiautonomous operation. Introduction of artificial intelligence technology enables adaptation of roadheader mining system to the present mining-and-geological conditions. Moreover, work aiming at implementation of state-of-the-art system for control of mine jig?s beneficiation node, integrating machines and equipment in one system, is carried out as regards automation, information integration, and visualization in coal beneficiation process. Work on recovery and conversion of thermal energy, which is a by-product during operation of machines and equipment, especially mine diesel drives, is presented. Systems for energy recuperation are more and more important due to the necessity of continuous increase of power production efficiency.

This report describes the design, and development work performed to reduce the volume and weight of the miners caplamp battery, as well as a headpiece with a swivel mechanism containing a halogen bulb with two filaments. Work was also conducted in the development of a maintenance free battery. The design concept is based on non-sintered Ni-Cd technology, with an energy density of 22 Wh/lb. The cap lamp system developed has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and can be manufactured for mine use.

Stabilization of water-bearing sediments by the freezing method for shaft sinking has been used for over 80 years on the European Continent. The real application of this method in Canada started with the development of the potash mines in Saskatchewan during the past fifteen years. The great depth to which it is applied creates a number of problems which have to be seriously considered by engineers in order to produce a safe and economical design. Freezing depth, thickness of the ice wall, number of the freeze holes, capacity of the freezing plant, pre-freezing time, etc., are the most important points which have to be established. Recent field experience in freezing to great depth in the Saskatchewan area is immensely interesting and important for further development of our potash mining and the application of the freezing method.

The Bureau of Mines has advocated the use of stenches as warning agents in metal mines and in gas-distribution systems since 1920 A considerable amount of research has been conducted on ethyl mercaptan and other compounds to determine their effectiveness when used for this purpose.4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/12/13/ Miners are warned of danger by a stench injected, in measured quantity, into a compressed-air line through which it is rapidly carried to the working faces, where it escapes from the compressed-air equipment and imparts a characteristic odor to the air. This method is not applicable to mines where only a limited number of com-pressed-air lines are used, as for example, many coal mines; the ventilation currents available in these mines may be too slow for warning purposes.14/

Sheep Creek Mines Limited has developed several operating techniques that have greatly assisted in keeping unit costs at reasonable levels. Some of the techniques, as described in this paper, include organization, accounting, warehousing, bonus and contracts. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is a non-technical report on operating techniques developed by Sheep Creek Mines Limited at their Mineral King mine, located near lnvermere, B.C. Depressed metal prices and continually rising labour and materials costs have necessitated a continuous search for method to keep operating costs down. The newly developed techniques and practices have greatly assisted in maintaining unit costs. Sheep Creek Mines Limited is a mining company incorporated under the laws of the Province of British Columbia. The Company's share capital is 3,500,000 common shares, witl1 a par value of 50 cents each, of which there are 1,875 000 shares is-sued. The Company has eight di-rectors. The administration, exploration and accounting offices are located in Nelson, B.C. The Company's working capital is approximately $1,500,000.

Procedures of mining high-calcium limestone underground at the Kimballton mine of the Standard Lime and Cement Co. in Giles County, west-central Virginia, are described. Drilling and blasting procedures arc discussed in detail, and direct mining costs are tabulated in percentage of total cost. Output, about 1,725 tons of limestone a day, is attained with heavy trackless equipment by the room and pillar method of ruining; modified by benching floors. Operating features include underground air compression, electric-eye control of curtained doorways, use of a single jumbo drill rig for all drilling, and an effective plan for maintenance of equipment. The company's safety program has contributed to an outstanding safe mining record. The mina is integrated with a plant on the property which converts the stone to metallurgical and chemical grade lime.
