IN INTRODUCING the subject of rock pressures, it may safely be assumed that mining men are only too familiar with the physical effects of strata stresses that accompany the extraction of minerals. It may be further assumed that they have, as individuals, arrived at certain conclusions regarding their nature, based upon years spent in observing such phenomena and in learning how to continue mining in spite of them. Such hardly won experience forms the core of what is often referred to as 'pit sense'. This essential type of knowledge is not ?based on theoretical considerations, nor can it be found in text books. It is highly individualistic in nature and almost impossible to pass on from one generation to another in terms of precise rules for guidance. It is this aspect of individual judgment based on practical experience that has led to the significant phrase The Art of Mining.

This report covers the results of an industrial engineering study that assessed the safety and efficiency of underground ore handling in U.S. metal mines. Significant conclusions that will be of benefit to the entire mining industry are the following: It appears from the study that the productivity of the slushing equipment itself cannot be substantially increased using the existing technology; the unsafe situations associated with slushers can be improved by better anchoring practices, by providing better work station layout that incorporates improved clearances and protected walkways over the ore pocket, by lighting the slusher drift, and by improved operator training; improved technology needs to be applied to the movement of broken ore in the stopes; and slushers will continue to be used in the mining industry in certain spedial and unique situations outlined in the report.

Regional-scale exploration for sediment-hosted gold deposits is hampered by the challenge of evaluating the fertility of ancient sedimentary sequences that host these deposits. Recent developments in laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry allow for the evaluation of the gold fertility of sedimentary sequences using chemistry of early-formed sedimentary pyrite. We present a case study from the Selwyn basin area of Yukon, Canada, where significant sediment-hosted gold exploration has been ongoing for the last five years. Data from sedimentary pyrite in some Neoproterozoic shales are anomalous in Au and As compared to a global data set of unmineralised sedimentary pyrite. If at least some of the gold and associated trace elements in sediment-hosted gold deposits are derived from recrystallisation of early sedimentary pyrite, it follows that strata containing anomalous sedimentary pyrite should be more prospective. Based on this premise, our data clearly show that Yusezyu Formation Neoproterozoic shales in the Selwyn basin area of Yukon are a fertile source rock for sediment-hosted gold deposits, while pyrite from Nadaleen formation shales are strongly anomalous in Hg and Tl, but not Au. Processes employing 'controlled at-mospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been asso-ciated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and dificult prob-lems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases. Controlled atmospheres such as disso-ciated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,' but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. The various mechanisms by which phosphorus (P) occurs and is distributed within banded iron formations (BIF)-derived iron ore are examined. In unenriched, precursor BIF P occurs predominantly as discrete grains of primary apatite. In high-grade ores hosted mainly by the Brockman Iron Formation, P occurs in three main forms:1. as secondary apatite;2. other submicron, P-rich phases (eg Rare earth containing minerals (REE), vivianite, strengite,wavellite) present in pore networks; and3. as P occurring with iron oxides, in particular, goethite.However, the presence of secondary P-bearing phases does not contribute signifi cantly to the total P level in iron ore, and it is P associated mainly with goethite, which represents the most common occurrence of P in these ores.No direct evidence for the replacement of Fe by P within the structure of synthetic goethite has been demonstrated. Therefore, it is most likely that in iron ores P associates with goethite in occluded form as adsorbed PO4 3- species or as discrete P-bearing minerals, such as strengite, wavellite or vivianite, in ultra-fine, micro-pores or within intra-domain regions of multi-domainic goethite. Such occluded P is not easily extracted with commonly used lixiviants, such as weakly alkaline leachates. Recent development of a low temperature-alkalie/water leach extraction method has been successful in reducing not only the P content, but also amounts of Si and Al inthe initial ore. Refi nement of such a method to commercial application will have enormous benefit in realising the economic potential of large tonnages of high-P (ie >0.07 wt per cent P) bearing iron ore.

IN view of the truly remarkable development of special steels for special purposes, the mining industry has for years looked forward to a time when steel makers would come forward with a product which would be an improvement over the straight carbon steel which has always held the field for drilling rock. In order to avoid making changes in conventional shop practice, the industry has perhaps been too insistent upon obtaining a water hardening steel which could be handled in the blacksmith shop by long established methods. As early as 1932 or 1933, an oil-hardening tool-steel of the one per cent carbon, plus chrome, plus molybdenum type was applied to hollow drill steel. It was known as a hard as well as a tough steel, and one that, theoretically, should give a good account of itself as a rock drill, if properly heat-treated; and so it has proved in actual trials. There were numerous deterrents which retarded adoption of this steel. For several years there has been a constant improvement in the drilling qualities of the straight carbon steel, and, considering the higher unit price ? of the alloy, there has been considerable doubt in the minds of some mining? men as to what advantage there might be in the use of alloy over straight carbon for hollow drill steel. The alloy being an oil-hardening steel, its adoption meant having two kinds of steel in the mine, for a time, and that spelled trouble, unless some positive means of identification was adopted. The hardening and forging ranges of alloy steel being narrow also made necessary much closer control over these operations if poor results were to be avoided. These thoughts undoubtedly prevented its use becoming wide-spread, for, as a matter of actual record, less than fifteen per cent of all the hollow drill steel used in Canada today is alloy.

"Corrosion protection of all deep foundation systems made of steel is THE issue when considering durability of the element in the long term. Protecting steel from corrosion and maintaining the steel tendon cross sectional area ensures a competent and durable system. The foundation of a building is usually difficult to repair and therefore high risk is taken when unknowingly choosing a non-adequate solution.Requirements according to EN 1990 (Eurocode 0 or EC 0) on construction durability requires a service life over 100 years. How can a service life over 100 years be achieved? How shall bare steel be protected in soil, which sometimes could be an aggressive environment to the steel? Which corrosion protection methods are commonly used in Europe and in North America?This paper will focus on hollow bars used as Micropiles, Anchor piles and Soil Nails. It gives an overview about the state of the practice in regards to corrosion protection (including head construction) and evaluates different options following the European Standards focusing on type of material and method of installation. Further the different corrosion protective methods such as thickness of grout body, coating types and sacrificial loss are listed with the pros and cons evaluated.Based not only on North American standards like FHWA “Micropile Design and Construction Guidelines”, FHWA Geotechnical Engineering Circular No. 7 for “Soil Nail Walls“ and Post-Tensioning Institute “Recommendations for Prestressed Rock and Soil Anchors”, but also European standards like EN 14199 “Execution of special geotechnical works – Micropiles”, EN 14490 “Execution of special geotechnical works - Soil nailing”, EN 1537 “Execution of special geotechnical work – Ground anchors“, and other relevant standards, all possibilities of protecting the hollow bars and the steel quality will be introduced, discussed and compared ."

Federal and utility industry research has largely ignored coal beneficiation techniques in the implementation of SOx control. This paper accepts the hypothesis that beneficiation cum scrubbing is the cheapest way for the vast majority of seams in the eastern coal provinces to comply with standards. Comparisons are based on point estimates of average beneficiation costs from a model of coal preparation (COBET) designed to simulate four levels of cleaning. The paper describes how economic theory can be applied to derive econometric supply functions from actual data on the geology of minable seams, washability and technical constraints. West Virginia is taken as an example of a producing region. Spatial supply functions are derived empirically from the engineering model simulations.

The US Bureau of Mines is cooperating with Cyprus Mineral Park Mining Co., Columbia University, and the US Geological Survey in investigating the feasibility of applying in situ leach mining methods to fracture-hosted, supergene copper sulfide (chalcocite) ores. This paper presents the initial findings of mineralogical, hydrogeological, and geochemical characterization studies conducted at the Mineral Park mine, located in the Wallapai mining district of northern Arizona. A design for in situ leaching is proposed that would minimize the need for blasting prior to leaching, and would enable economical development of deep reserves at the Mineral Park mine. The in situ leaching design would also reduce the potential for long term acid rock drainage.

Rapid Freeze Prototyping (RFP) is a novel solid freeform fabrication technology that creates parts by depositing water droplets and freezing them rapidly to form layers. An investigation into the smallest thickness that can be achieved by the RFP process was conducted. The factors that could significantly affect the thickness of the part built by this process including substrate temperature, volumetric feed rate, table velocity, nozzle frequency, nozzle standoff distance, and head pressure were considered. A shell building technique for use with the RFP system has been developed. Thin wall ice patterns have been invested using production shell building techniques and an alcohol-based slurry. The finished shells were quantitatively evaluated by inspecting their total shell thickness, mold cavity dimensional reproducibility, and shell strength. Pattern loss is influenced by not only the alcohol / water interaction but also the starting thickness as it relates to thermal mass.

"SUMMARY While the basic elements of risk management, including probability, consequences, risk registers, mitigation measures, etc., are now well understood, the process to include correlation, dependencies and linkage of risks and risk scenarios is less well defined and not well understood. To perform accurate and complete risk analysis and risk management, it is necessary to include correlation, dependencies and linkage between risk events, as well as risks that may occur multiple times. In this way, owners and contractors can more accurately determine risk-based costs, risk impacts and risk mitigation strategies. This paper will outline methods to deal with correlation, dependencies and linkage and will consider risks that may occur multiple times. Practical result comparisons – with or without these elements – will be presented. INTRODUCTION We believe the reader is familiar with basic concepts of risk, risk management and mitigation and the use of probabilistic cost-risk processes versus deterministic ones (Reilly et al. 2015; Sander et al. 2015). The probabilistic approach, compared to the simpler and more common deterministic approach (unit prices times unit costs plus a contingency), offers more useful information with respect to the range of probable cost as well as cost “drivers” and better quantifies the effects of risks, opportunities and variability – which improves understanding, leading to a better potential for profit (or loss) for contractors and added value for owners. In this context, a valid and sufficient quantification of correlation, dependencies and linkage of risk events, plus the impact of risks that may occur multiple times, is essential. Components of Cost Estimates – Base Cost, Risks and Other Uncertainties The components of cost that need to be correctly addressed in an estimate include (Moergeli et al. 2015): •,Base costs – the costs that will result if “all goes according to plan” (Reilly 2004) •,Risk costs – the resulting costs of threat and opportunity events, if they should occur •,Escalation costs – costs resulting from normally expected inflation with variability •,Other uncertain costs – costs that result from other events, normally external to the project team’s control, which may include unanticipated events, politically related changes and “black swan” events (Talib 2007)"

Interviews of 48 miners who escaped underground coal mine fires revealed that none of them had ever, before that incident, worn their self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) either in training or in a real emergency. Consequently, they were ill-prepared to use this emergency breathing apparatus. One persistent problem stemmed from the fact that miners had no notion of breathing resistance, nor of the fact that it would get more difficult to breathe the longer they wore their device. As a result, many of those who were interviewed had simply removed their mouthpieces and breathed ambient air. This is obviously behavior that should be trained out of the workforce. Unfortunately, because of high costs and difficult logistics, miner training is unlikely to ever include donning and wearing an apparatus on a regular basis. In order to give workers a better idea of what to expect from their devices, therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a tabletop (paper and pencil) simulation based upon actual predicaments evacuees had reported encountering. The simulation is designed to emphasize important points related to donning and wearing a self-contained self-rescuer in a mine fire escape, and, by doing so, to bring miners' expectations more in line with what their actual experiences would be. The simulation was field tested in six training classes at three different mining operations. In all, 99 individuals were involved in completing the exercise and rating its properties. In their ratings 88% of the respondents indicated they thought the scenario could definitely happen in real life, and over 80% agreed they had learned something new. From the field test data it was concluded that the simulation had authenticity and potential value as a teaching tool. The simulation was therefore used in a pre-test/post-test control group experiment to determine whether it led to improvements in miners' scores on a true-false test of their SCSR's functional capabilities and proper usage. Eighty-three miners were included in this part of the study. As expected, miners who had participated in the training exercise scored significantly higher on their post-test than miners who had not.

The search for new alloys for application in the atomic energy field had prompted investigation of zirconium-rare earth metal alloys by the Federal Bureau of Mines. In this instance the zirconium-dysprosium system was investigated by melting point, thermal analysis, resistivity, X-ray and metallographic methods. Results indicate a single eutectic system with a peritectoid reaction occurring at 890° C. The eutectic isotherm extends from 30 to 95-percent dysprosium at 1,280° C. Eutectic composition is located at approximately 70 percent dysprosium. Solid solubility of dysprosium in both alpha and beta zirconium is extensive. The extent of solid solubility of zirconium in dysprosium has not been determined. Although zirconium rich alloys exhibit a significant increase in hardness, they can be cold worked extensively. These alloys also appear adaptable to solution heat treatment. Additional investigations concerning corrosion resistance and other mechanical properties are necessary for satisfactory evaluation of these alloys. The superior corrosion resistance of zirconium and the nuclear cross-section characteristics of the rare earth metals have stimulated alloy investigations using zirconium as a base metal. Alloys combining these characteristics present a possible substitute for hafnium as a control rod material. In this particular study dysprosium was chosen as the alloying element, and several series of alloys were used to establish the equilibrium diagram.

Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. The increase in industrial demand is responsible for a consequent evolution in the process of injection of aluminum under pressure (Die Casting) to achieve requirements such as; greater geometric complexity of injected parts, larger dimensions, hard-filled cavities, thin walls, and more refined mechanical and aesthetic requirements. Thus, the industries have searched for sensible increases in pressure and injection speed, always combining the best resistance and performance of the wells submitted to the new process conditions. The need for more aggressive applications for the cavities means that there is a constant evolution of the entire production chain in the manufacture of molds, passing through several processes, among them; machining, designs with complex engineering solutions, refining in the process of heat treatments and surface treatments. Allied to these needs, high performance steels manufactured by differentiated processes with high fracture resistance, hot strength and wear must be selected. This work aims to present the main factors considered in the development of high performance molds, the engineering of materials involved, technological trends and technical engineering solutions for the different variables of the die casting process.

ABILITY to speak effectively is one of man's most longed for and coveted abilities. It is the ability to stand on one's feet, transfer knowledge and thoughts to others, to reach an objective professionally or otherwise by leading groups through a channel of planned thought. Each day group speaking plays an important part in making or marring success, and the engineering profession often provides this opportunity and requirement. An ability to speak effectively develops courage, poise, confidence, and prestige for the speaker. The technical man cannot be reluctant to face an audience. He is often called upon to do this in presence of employees, supervisors, and other groups. His ability to speak effectively is as much a requirement as the fundamentals of his profession. The three fundamentals of effective speaking are: (1) Enthusiasm and Confidence. These are joined because of their close relation. (2) Preparation. This includes knowledge of the subject. (3) Presentation. By this is meant the features of delivery.

The constructionhunnelling industry in Hong Kong has taken an upturn during the last few years due to the commencement of works to relocate the International Airport to Chek Lap Kok Island. The Airport Core Program consists of ten individual projects including roads, landfill, bridges and tunnels to build the airport and link it to the mainland of Hong Kong. Part of one of these projects is Cheung Ching Tunnel located on Tsing Yi Island. The proposed tunnel consists of a 1.6 km twin tube road tunnel through the island's central ridge, taking three lanes of traffic each way. Each tunnel is 16 m wide - (the widest road tunnel in Hong Kong) and are 10 m high. ICI Explosives (China) saw an opportunity to supply bulk explosives to the Cheung Ching tunnel and contacted ICI Australia to determine availability of a bulk system for tunnel blasting, and assist in its introduction. This paper discusses the methodology behind developing that bulk system to suit a large tunnel drill and blast operation. It also looks at the problems encountered along the way, from the development of the product to the application of the system in the tunnel and the eventual success of introducing a bulk system into a large tunnelling project.
