The oxidation characteristics of solid copper matte particles under simulated Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting conditions are presented. This project is concerned with the determination of the effects of operating variables on the reaction of the particles. Experiments were carried out in a large laboratory-scale flash furnace with 72 wt-% Cu matte by varying initial particle size, temperature, oxygen partial pressure, oxygen-to-matte mass ratio and residence time. Chemical analysis was used to study the oxidation extent and copper volatilization. Particle fragmentation was examined. Fractional conversion and sulfur removal slightly decreased with initial particle size, while a higher oxygen-to-matte mass ratio mainly resulted in higher fractional conversion and more efficient sulfur removal. The fractional conversion values represented the overall extent of oxidation more closely than degree of sulfur removal.

Drilling is one of the most, significant cost components of any stoping or develop- ment operation. Two of the factors contri- buting to the drilling cost are the supply and servicing of consumable items such as drill rods and bits. The purchase cost of consumable items can be controlled to a large extent by using the correct balance of quality and price. However, the service cost is a less easily controlled factor and it is in this area where potential savings are significant. In June, 1976 a six month trial period was commenced at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited with two separate suppliers supplying and ser- vicing all longhole drilling parties (one supplier for each mine) at a guaranteed cost per metre. As a result of this six month trial period a new contract was commenced in December, 1976 with one supplier supplying and servicing all longhole drilling parties at both ZC and NBHC for a twelve month period. This concept has now been in operation for over twelve months and has proved to be a significant means of slowing down the increas- ing cost associated with drilling operations.

A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. "In order to study the support effect of concrete in the surrounding rock of a metal mine, the concrete and surrounding rock were comparatively studied. Firstly, the general situation of the ultra-kilometer deep shaft in Xincheng, surrounding rock and geological conditions are introduced. Secondly, the experimental scheme of material mechanical properties of surrounding rock and shaft lining concrete based on same standard dimension and shape are examined, and the mechanical tests of rock and concrete based on different shapes and sizes are carried out. The study shows that the compressive strength value and elastic modulus of the rock cube are 1.28 times and 1.78 times that of the cylinder, and the Poisson's ratio is 0.77 times. The dimensional effect law of the concrete cube and cylinder test data is consistent with the rock law. However, the test results of the concrete are less discrete than the rock; the test also shows that the strength and elastic modulus of the concrete lining of the main shaft of the Xincheng are much smaller than the surrounding rock that is also used as the concrete aggregate, which indicates that the support of concrete lining in the surrounding rock shaft behaved weakly. Based on the development of the modern NATM rock support theory, it is suggested that the mechanical test standard of artificial support materials should be unified into the mechanics test standard of natural rock, which will help to improve the accuracy and practicality of scientific calculation of geotechnical engineering.INTRODUCTIONConcrete and rock mass are usually attributed to a class of materials called frictional materials or geotechnical materials, of these two kinds of materials, the first is man-maded and the second is natural. The attentive scholar can find that there are many differences in the test criteria for the mechanical properties of the two kinds of materials among different industries or departments, reflecting the differences in their sources, tradition, and the application thoery of material strength among them.There is a situation wordwide, that there are many testing standards of the same material mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus, compressive strength, etc. The cube with a side length of 150 mm is adopted as a common sample in the architecture department in China, while a cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm and a height of 100 mm is as a standard specimen in geotechnical department.Knowing that mechanical parameter values are strongly affected by the the size, shape of specimen and loading rate etc, that is to say the mechanical parameter values of the same material are completely different when obtained from different test with different standards. However, such a problem has been long neglected in geotechnical engineering."

"The financial model is an integral component of any project evaluation based on mineral resources, ore reserves and (at least internally) exploration targets. Given the unity of purpose for preparing financial models for project evaluation purposes, the diversity of both format and content of the finalised models is surprising. Many models are prepared by staff or consultants who are comfortable with a particular format that may be used for other purposes, such as budget preparation or financial reporting. It is natural in these situations that the practitioner will take these models and adapt them to the purpose. The end result may or may not succeed in providing a clear, accurate and sufficiently detailed view of the project’s economic viability.When preparing a model, the practitioner should be cognisant of the interpretation and review, or audit, process. The auditor may be a consultant or employee of a bank, potential equity provider or of the project sponsor itself. Depending upon the scale of the project and the level of participation of the entity that the auditor represents, the financial model will be interrogated more or less rigorously. In any event, the end user will require the model to permit easy change of inputs and will wish to confirm that such change is appropriately and thoroughly transmitted throughout.Accordingly, there are some ‘dos and don’ts’ that can be readily applied in the creation of the financial model that will greatly assist the end user, not just in the change of inputs, but also in reviewing the model’s integrity. The Bureau of Mines is making a survey of petroleum products manufactured on the Pacific Coast from California crude oils . California crude petroleum is known to differ in some characteristics from the crude oil produced in other parts of the United States , and the claim has been made that the present Federal specifications are unduly severe when applied to the products made from California crudes . The main purpose of the present survey is to determine whether these claims are justified . This report deals only with California gasolines . Other products , such as burning oil , fuel and lubricating oils , will be taken up later . The samples reported were furnished in most cases , by the four large refining companies located on the Pacific Coast , although a number of samples of motor gasoline were purchased in the open market . In Los Angeles , samples of motor gasoline were obtained from service stations representing as many different refineries as possible . Inasmuch as San Francisco is one of the cities covered by the regular semi -annual motor gasoline survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines , it was not considered essential that the set of samples obtained from this city be as comprehensive as would otherwise have been necessary . The gasoline consumed in the States of Washington and Oregon is furnished for the most part by California refineries , and no effort was made to procure samples from these States .

"Dry-granulation is a new process of molten blast furnace slag treatment and air is used as heat exchange medium. There are some shortages: poor effectiveness of granulation, high air-slag ratio and high energy consumption, which are the obstacles to popularize dry-granulation. Based on rotary cup atomization, the technique of recovering waste heat of molten blast furnace slag through waste heat boiler producing high pressure steam is exploited. The molten blast furnace slag is granulated to uniform small slag granules with high temperature, and slag granules pour into the waste heat boiler. It could produce steam, obtained in first row and second row tubes, when descending velocity of slag granules equaled 1.1mm/s and the Reynolds number equaled 7100. The application of the system for recovering waste heat from high temperature molten blast furnace slag has a significant meaning.IntroductionBlast furnace slag is one kind of solid waste in iron making process, which is discharged at the temperature range from 1723 to 1923K. In China, there was 0.162 billion tons of slag discharged in 2009, and the energy contained in the slag is equivalent to the energy in 9.4 million tons of coal equivalent. The sensible heat of molten slag is a very valuable waste heat source, so it is worthwhile to recover the sensible heat. At present, the molten slag is treated by a water quenching method. But in this process, the sensible heat is not recovered, moreover, an amount of water is consumed and harmful waste gas is discharged into the environment. Due to the considerations of energy conversation and environmental protection, the iron making industry pays close attention to dry-granulation, which is useful to obtain more benefits [1-4]. The sensible heat is recovered and an amount of water is saved by the method of dry-granulation. The amorphous content of slag granules obtained from dry-granulation is over 95% [5, 6], so the slag granules can be used as a perfect raw material for cement [7, 8].In the late 1970s, the Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and the Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Ltd. jointly undertook the research of rotary drum granulation. This method has several disadvantages: the processing capacity and efficiency are low, and it is not adoptive to operate continuously in production [9]. From 1980, Nippon Steel, NKK, Kawasaki Steel, Kobe Steel, Sumitomo Metal Industries and Nisshin Steel were engaged on air granulation, and the experiments were operated for 6 years on the blast furnace in Nippon Steel. In the process of air granulation, there was great power consumption. The complexity of structure and the great floor space of the air granulation device caused high cost of investment. In 1986, Ukraine exploited a new method of heat recovery referring to the technology of Continuous Casting and Rolling [10]."

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

The paper presents a model of a multigrade monitoring-management structure for support to decision making and management in real and extended time in mineral processing (MP). The model was created as a result of a long-lasting research, design and development of mining, computer integrated monitoring-management systems. Apart from the general explanations, the authorsÆ state in the introduction that efficiency of a system for support to decision-making and management in mineral processing is more difficult to achieve by conventional approaches, than by the fuzzy logic approach. Starting from the multiphase structure of process flows in MP, the following are process and monitoring-management oriented graphs. The graphs served as a foundation of the multigrade hierarchical fuzzy model for support to decision making and management in MP. Following the example of the monitoring-management system of the æRudnikÆ mine flotation plant, fuzzy logic implementation was shown. The key conclusions of the paper are that fuzzyfication of layers of the decision making and management model has full justification due to the complexity and dynamics of mineral processing processes, complications and often insurmountable difficulties concerning the precise description of real systems by conventional mathematical tools, variability of external influences, and the (general) non-linearity of the MP processes management criteria functions.

In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas, it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process. This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities. The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented, and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed. It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred.

"Melt quality is crucial for both continuous and shape casting of light alloys and in order to improve it, removal of excessive inclusions, accumulated impurities and unwanted gases becomes necessary. To address this problem, a new multi-purpose high shear liquid metal treatment technology, based on intensive melt shearing by a rotor/stator unit, has been developed. The device ensures achieving uniform temperature and chemical composition and an efficient dispersion of gas and solid phases in the melt with minimal disturbance of melt surface, and can be used, among other things, for de-gassing and de-ironing of Al-alloy melts. Efficient degassing is achieved by dispersing each argon bubble into many small ones, which significantly increases the overall surface area of the bubbles and the time they remain in the melt capturing hydrogen before reaching the surface. This allows using much lower inert gas flow and mixing times than conventional rotary degassing. When applied to Al-alloy scrap, with accumulated iron, the high shear melt treatment speeds up the nucleation and growth of primary Fe-rich intermetallic particles, allowing a faster removal rate. Therefore it reduces processing times, increasing recycling productivity, and facilitates full metal circulation of secondary Al-alloys.INTRODUCTION Aluminium and magnesium alloys are widely considered in various industrial sectors for the purpose of weight saving (Polmear, 1995). In particular, they are used in the automotive sector, where components are mostly manufactured by high pressure die casting (HPDC) because of its simplicity and relatively low cost, but efficiency and mechanical properties are quite low compared with other processes. To date, the main focus to overcome this problem has been for improving the HPDC machinery (Dahle, 2001) but little attention has been paid to the opportunities of controlling the nature and quality of the molten metal supplied to the die. In this way, liquid metal treatment, which involves a variety of physical and/or chemical processing methods to improve melt quality prior casting, is crucial for both continuous and shape casting products."

In view of the developments and recent interest in recovering heavy oil , this report was prepared to present general information on more than 2,000 heavy oil reservoirs in more than 1,500 fields in 26 states . Information given on each heavy - oil deposit includes the following items : Field and formation , location , average or range of depth , average API gravity of oil , average thickness of formation , areal extent of field , total productive wells drilled in field , discovery date of field , field status in 1963 , cumulative production to Jan. 1 , 1964 , and all known types of secondary - recovery operations initiated ( active and terminated ) in the reservoirs . The geographical location of heavy oil accumulations in the United States is shown by a map , and a brief discussion of 14 different areas is given in the text . As of Jan. 1 , 1964 , 75 percent of the heavy oil reservoirs in the United States had produced more than 10 billion barrels of oil and are estimated to contain over 90 billion barrels of oil in place . It is also estimated that if the deposits which have had little or no production history , such as the one in Missouri , were included , the total remaining heavy oil in place would be in excess of 150 billion barrels . To find economical ways of recovering this vast reserve of heavy oil , industry is developing technology in several types of thermal - recovery methods . Some of the general considerations and more suitable limitations in selecting a prospect to study for thermal - recovery techniques are : Lithology , depth , viscosity of reservoir fluids , gravity of oil , reservoir thickness , oil in place , and permeability and porosity .

Alumina can be recovered from clay , using 30 percent nitric acid for digestion . Calcined clay is crushed and then digested at 325 ° F and 85 psig pressure with less than stoichiometric nitric acid required to form normal aluminum nitrate . In this way , a solution containing both normal aluminum nitrate , Al ( NO3 ) 3 , and basic aluminum nitrate , assumed to be Al ( OH ) ( NO3 ) 2 , is formed , and in which iron is virtually insoluble . The solution is filtered and then concentrated in vacuum evaporators to crystallize normal aluminum nonahydrate . The crystals are washed with 50 percent nitric acid and then decomposed to alumina and nitrogen oxides . The design that has been developed for this process is based on published work . For a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day , the estimated operating cost is $60.69 per ton of alumina , and the estimated fixed capital cost is $ 76 million using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 . This process is not competitive under current economic conditions with the production of alumina from bauxite via the Bayer process . For lowering costs , future research should include study of leaching at lower temperatures under atmospheric pressure and alternate aluminum nitrate decomposition methods .

The Goro Nickel Process, developed over a ten-year period, uses a number of novel processing steps and treats two ore types, limonite and saprolite, together. Nickel and cobalt are solubilized using a 270°C pressure acid leach in sulphuric acid, which rejects the bulk of the Fe into the leach residue as hematite particles. The leach liquor, after CCD, is aerated to oxidize any ferrous iron to the ferric form and is neutralized with limestone to precipitate iron as hydroxides together with gypsum from the neutralization of the free acid. Further neutralization with lime, together with steps to remove suspended solids, reduces the iron to trace concentrations. Nickel and cobalt are directly recovered from the low-iron leach solution by primary solvent extraction using Cyanex 301® (SXl) in a high-strength hydrochloric acid solution. Nickel is subsequently separated from cobalt in a secondary solvent extraction circuit using tri-isooctylamine. A granular nickel oxide is made by pyrohydrolysis, and this allows the recycling of hydrochloric acid to SXl. The process is currently being commercialized to produce approximately 60,000 t/y of nickel as nickel oxide granules and approximately 5,400 t/y of cobalt as cobalt carbonate. This paper describes the process development to control the Fe concentration in the SX1 feed solution.

After hot rolling, stainless steel strip is processed by the Hot Rolled Annealing and Pickling line (HAP) , where H2SO4 or mixed acid of HNO3 and HF is normally used. In the pickling bath, metal oxide accumulates in the form of sludge, which should be removed from the bath regularly. A new automatic continuous sludge disposal system has been introduced at Chiba Works of Kawasaki Steel Corporation to increase sludge removal efficiency and improve the working environment. The elements of the equipment are as follows. a. Ejectors in pickling bath: to carry the mixed acid into the circulation tank through the piping system. b. Sedimentation bath : to sediment sludge out of the bath. c. Skip conveyer : to convey a specified volume of sludge into a kneading for device for neutralizing. The sludge removal efficiency of this system is very high. and the volume of sludge accumulation in the pickling bath has substantially decreased.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER WORK Based on the development effort and full-scale tests conducted during this program, a number of technical areas for future research and development have been identified. Further work in these areas would help to improve the reliability, speed of operation and efficiency of the remote sealing system. Recommendations for future work are summarized as follows 1. Development of an Inert Gas Generator For the sake of expediency in conducting the field test program, fresh air was used as the fluidizing medium for the fly ash. However, in an actual mine fire application the use of fresh air is likely to be prohibited. An inert gas, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or air containing less than 8 percent oxygen would be required. Using combustion as a means of reducing the oxygen content of air appears to be an attractive solution to the generation of the high flow rates of gas required (2500 to 5000 scfm). Such an inert gas generator would serve a dual purpose for the overall fire extinguishing operation. First, it would provide the inert gas for fluidizing the fly ash. Second, it could be used for inerting the fire area after the seals had been placed, thereby reducing the time required to extinguish the fire. It is recommended that the Bureau undertake a program to develop a field-operable, inert gas generator to satisfy these two requirements. 2. Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No.4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10-20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove grindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275" C to 325" C range.

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. En 2009, les installations de traitement du minerai à haute teneur de Lapa ont été annexées à l’usine de traitement de LaRonde, augmentant la production d’or de 120 000 onces. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."
