"In response to needs created by intensive exploration and accelerating expansion of coal mining in the Western provinces, Canadian R & D on coal is progressively widening its scope. Principal interests continue to lie in coal geology, preparation and processing, carbonization, combustion and transportation, but much active work is also in progress with respect to mine environments, mined-land reclamation, and environmental consequences of coal mining, processing and use. Long-range 'basic' research, which characterized much of the R & D pattern in the fifties and early sixties and which was often no more than an attempt to prevent total extinction of a dying industry, has been somewhat de-emphasized, except insofar as it relates to 'safe' coal storage and to coal-based carbons (which are beginning to command attention as pollution control media).In this review, recent exploration, mine development and new preparation facilities are noted, and current R & D in transportation, processing, handling, carbonization and combustion is summarized. Reference is also made to investigations bearing on non-fuel uses of coal (notably as source-materials for carbons and agrobiological products)."

FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which. the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,000. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation', the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

The survival chances of trapped miners in underground mines depend on how quickly they can be located and rescued post-accident. During entrapments, emergency rescue is highly desired but can be hindered by the lack of positioning information when a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system is not available. Various types of missing-person locator systems are available to aid search-and-rescue operations. From the wide range of the available systems, selecting the most suitable one becomes the next challenge. The available systems have not been measured if they are fit-for-purpose or not, and to what situation. This study proposes user requirements that can be used as a guideline to facilitate the system selection process. These user requirements provide a framework for the design and development of a fit-for-purpose missing-person locator system. The user requirements can also be used for evaluating the performances of a particular system, predict its success, and also drive future research toward developing new technology to enhance the capabilities of the current systems.

Properly constructed stopes are necessary underground for proper ventilation and safe, healthful working conditions. Mining companies are concerned with providing the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. It is important to consider 1) proper materials, 2) construction that ensures maximum performance from the material used, and 3) keeping costs within reasonable limits for the unit operation—stopping—involved. The authors investigated all aspects of the problem and have attempted to layout a study program to provide information on all phases. Mining companies every year purchase huge amounts of material for the construction of ventilation stoppings. This material by the time it is in place in the stoppings will cost the company many thousands of dollars. In addition and more importantly these stoppings are supposed to confine air travel along certain well defined paths into areas where it is needed to provide safe and healthful atmospheres for workmen. The cost of forcing this air through the mine is large and in general increases as the total quantity increases. Consequently, if the stoppings leak, increased cost results and in addition unsatisfactory ventilation may prevail in the mine. Therefore, it is essentia1 to provide the best possible stoppings at an economic cost. When attempting to provide the best stoppings possible at an economic cost, three aspects of the problem must be considered. These are 1) getting the most suitable material for stopping constructions, 2) constructing the stopping so as to get the best performance from the material used, and 3) keeping the cost of stopping construction to a minimum for a suitable stopping. This investigation is concerned with all phases of the problem and has attempted to lay out a study to provide information on all of them. In order to develop information on the best stopping material available it seemed wise, after con- sidering the job a stopping must do, to investigate the following aspects of material used for stoppings: 1) strength in compression, 2) compressibility or yield under load, 3) porosity, and 4) permeability. To provide information on the best manner of construction the following aspects of air leakage through the stopping were investigated: 1) when the stopping is built of dry stacked materials—i.e., the joints are not mortar-laid (See Fig. 1); 2) when the stopping is built of dry stacked material and then plastered on one side (see Fig. 2); 3) when the

A thermodynamic database for the oxyfluoride system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-Na2O-K2O-Li2OMnO- FeO-F has been developed based on the critical evaluation and optimization of all available experimental thermodynamic and phase diagram data. The developed database can be used for phase diagram and equilibrium solidification calculations for multicomponent systems and for understanding the solidification behavior of mold fluxes. Based on this thermodynamic database, a simple kinetic model was developed to simulate the interactions between the mold flux and molten steel using effective equilibrium reaction volumes combined with the thermodynamic database.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. Shafts are the most important workings in the underground mines. Their technical state to a large extent determines the safety and efficiency of mining operations. However, in many cases periodically performed inspections show unsatisfactory technical state of the shaft lining (local defects, cracks, cavities, losses of the outer surface of the lining or, in case of the bricks, losses of the masonry). The most common cause of these types of damage is progressive deterioration of the lining material, impact of aggressive mine waters, impact of mining operations, deformation of the lining due to the rock mass saturation, seismic activity or periodic freezing of the lining in the upper part of a shaft. The paper presents legal requirements associated with the use of mine shafts in Polish coal mines as well as the ways and range of their control. Furthermore, examples of typical damage to shaft lining and ways to repair it, such as additional bolting, filling cavities or a wire mesh and shotcrete installation, are shown. In the final part, the paper presents a short example of a shaft, in which damage to the lining was one of the main causes of the shaft's failure. Due to the damage to the shaft lining, at the depth of approx. 65.0 m, the shaft was spontaneously filled with overburdened soil material. It resulted in a large crater to come to the surface, which, in turn, caused damage to the buildings and facilities present in the impact zone. On the surface the diameter of the crater was approx. 60.0 m, its depth approx. 11 m and the estimated volume was of about 30,000 m³. The disaster also caused disturbance in the ventilation of two neighbouring mines and the increase in methane hazard. Given the size of the crater, the measures to eliminate consequences of the catastrophe were undertaken in several stages.

Corrosion of equipment and machinery in the coal industry is usually the result of three main agents: acids, chlorides, and abrasion. Acids and chlorides are especially troublesome in coal preparation plants where soluble salts and sulfur in the coal produce a highly corrosive wash solution. Abrasion is common in all operations where coal is handled or conveyed. Together, the acid-chloride-abrasion combination results in some of the worst corrosive conditions found in any industry. The variety of equipment and structures in the coal industry calls for different corrosion control techniques. Table 1 lists the areas of concern for a number of items. Just as there is a wide variety of corrosion problems, there is a wide array of coating materials available. Tables 2 and 3 are selection charts to provide guidance in narrowing down the choices. Experience has shown that a limited number of coating systems work best on coal equipment and structures. These systems are described in Table 4. The good-better-best designation in the table refers to coating system longevity. Good indicates the least costly and shortest service life. In nearly all cases the lowest annualized cost can be achieved by using the coating system rated best, due to the avoidance of costly repaints and unnecessary downtime. The most expensive coating system, though, is worthless unless the coating system is properly applied. Field inspection to insure compliance with specifications is an important aspect, and is a service available from many coating suppliers. Even the best coating systems require periodic maintenance to achieve satisfactory results. Spot rusting from mechanical damage should be repaired annually to maximize the coatingsystem's results.

"It is well known that froth visual features reflect the operating conditions of the flotation process, so that being able to accurately obtain the froth properties is the most significant criteria to optimize and control this process. Froth segmentation is a useful procedure that can determine the bubble size distribution. Several algorithms have been proposed in this field, but marker-based watershed transform shows the best performance. In spite of this fact, the algorithm suffers from oversegmentation in cases when the flotation froth includes large bubbles along with small ones. In the paper, the marker-based watershed method is modified to prevent oversegmentation of large bubbles. The developed algorithm is validated using some froth images captured at different operating conditions, so the results indicate that the method can segment the mixture of big and small bubbles effectively.IntroductionFroth flotation is a widely used process for separating valuable from gangue minerals. Effective control of flotation circuits has a dramatic effect on overall performance of a mineral processing plant. In most flotation plants, process operators monitor the froth surface visually and make adjustments to process parameters based on their interpretation of the surface appearance and their idea of the appearance of an ideal froth. However, due to natural complexity of the flotation process, achieving optimal control is often not possible for human operators.In recent years, attempts have been made to control the flotation circuits using machine vision systems (Moolman et al., 1995; 1996a,b; Bartolacci et al., 2006; Kaartinen et al., 2006; Vanegas and Holtham, 2008; Aldrich et al., 2010). The froth bubble size distribution is the most significant control variable that reflects the operating conditions in a flotation machine. To date, a number of approaches have been proposed for bubble size measurement from froth images, including segmentation (Sadr-kazemi and Cilliers, 1997; Wang et al., 2003; Mehrshad and Massinaei, 2011), texture spectrum (Nguyen and Thornton, 1995), wavelet (Liu et al., 2005), an improved texture spectrum approach, a method based on binary images (Lin et al., 2008) and, finally, using interfacial morphological information (Yang et al., 2009)."

This paper outlines the contributing factors to a series of erroneous Mineral Resource estimates which led to considerable loss, including significant reduction of mine life and consequently a large write-down of asset value. The error prompted divestment of the mineral asset in the short-term by the owners, a major mining company. There were multiple and complex contributions to the result: • The mine was undergoing a transition in the deposit geology with increasing depth that was not accommodated in the models. Early indications of the geological transition in initial drilling were generally unrecognised in resource modelling. The shortcomings of the models became apparent with increasing infill drilling and subsequent production reconciliation. • There was a lack of recognition of, and confidence in, site-based input and skills by corporate technical management. The site had a reputation internally for over-delivery to plan early in its life and that supported the anticipation of ongoing metal delivery into the mine plan by management. • A corporate lack of confidence in site being able to adequately domain the mineralisation led to the use of a CIK domaining process, rather than one which was geologically based. This domaining process led to gross over-statement of mineralisation trends reflected in the subsequent OK estimate. • Timelines on the outsourced estimation process were so short that validation was not possible. Obvious errors in the estimate versus data were not able to be used to correct the issues and the site’s Competent Person sign-off occurred without adequate checks. This case study is presented to reinforce the concept that Mineral Resource estimates are not solely based on the ability of the Competent Person to satisfactorily guide the process. There are usually multiple complex issues in the estimation process which need to be recognised and considered in judging reconciliations of model to actual.

In the mining business the cost of grinding media represents up to 40 per cent of the total milling cost and therefore grinding media optimisation has a direct impact on the concentratorsÆ bottom line. In the process of optimising grinding media alloys, Magotteaux developed its own methodology which consists of a series of analyses, tests, calculations and evaluations and assist the concentrator in optimising their processes.This paper presents the Prominent Hill case study where this methodology has been applied on both the secondary ball mill and regrind IsaMill«.The analysis of the wear conditions in the secondary ball mill allows Magotteaux to select a series of grinding media alloys to be tested to reduce grinding media consumption. By marking these different grinding media types with a unique drilling pattern, one can quantify the relative wear performance and cost effectiveness of each grinding media type within the same milling environment. After selecting the most economical grinding media composition a full scale industrial trial, involving topping up the selected grinding media is carried out and the media wear performance closely monitored and analysed.For stirred grinding mills, suppliers propose different grinding media, mainly ceramic beads, with specific properties and cost. Therefore the concentratorsÆ choice is a compromise between grinding efficiency, wear resistance and cost. The selection of the correct grinding media for stirred milling and the assessment procedure will be presented in this paper. "IntroductionInco Limited operates nine underground mines on the rim of the Sudbury Basin. These operation s are situated near the city of Sudbury, 589 km west of Montreal, and 363 km north of Toronto. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, and the principal minerals are pentlandite, chalcopyrite , and pyrrhotite. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 51 000 tons per day.The total volume of fresh air supplied to the nine mines is six million cu.ft/min. There are 50 main fans in operation at these mines, powered by electric motors totaling 11 200 kW (15 000 hp).The trend in metal mining during recent years towards mechanization and high-tonnage production methods has greatly increased ventilation requirements. The now of air must quickly dilute and carry away diesel exhaust fumes, dust created by mining operations, and the fumes of the explosives used in blasting. Mechanical ventilation is required to obtain the necessary volume and control, as natural ventilation pressures alone are, for the most part, inadequate and unreliable. In the event of a mine fire or other needs, close control of ventilation is essential.There are two unique heating systems presently in operation at Inco: Creighton Natural Heat Exchanger and Stobie Ice Stopes."

THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the froth-ability of pine oil is governed by: 1—rate of aeration, 2—time of aeration, 3—height of liquid column, 4—chemical composition of pine oil, 5—pH value of solution, 6—temperature of solution, and 7—concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.' The results also show that the relative froth-abilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of re-producibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1—compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2—a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifying and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.' Two quartz types used in the silicon and ferrosilicon industry were heated to temperatures of 1600 and 1700 °C. The parameters varied were the temperature and the holding time at maximum temperature. The amount of quartz, cristobalite and intermediate amorphous phase were measured using XRD and the internal standard method. Type P showed a much larger ability to transform to cristobalite at lower temperatures than type A. Type P had a larger amount of alkali and alkaline earth impurities. This could have enhanced the transformation to cristobalite. For quartz type A the amount of cristobalite was larger at 1600 °C than 1700 °C. This can also be seen for some of the samples of type P at shorter holding times.

The most common REE containing mineral that is worked today is bastnäsite. It means that mineral processes are adapted to it and that the metallurgical separation techniques for winning of individual REE are adapted to bastnäsite concentrates. For all other deposit types, suitable mineral processing methods and separation technologies need to be adapted and/or developed. Preliminary mineralogical analyses indicate that slightly less than half of the REE in the tailings dumps at LKAB/Kiruna are associated to apatite. The rest is in the minerals monazite (maybe associated to apatite) and allanite. At least allanite is probably not floatable with reagents commonly used for apatite. Mass and element distributions for the tailings sand reveal that very little apatite is present above 300 µm, and that approx. 30 % is below 20 µm. REE does not follow P2O5 completely and are also present in coarser fractions. Flotation results show that the best condition for both apatite and REE winning is pH 9, high collector addition and low dosage of water glass. Under these conditions, the lab-scale flotation gives an apatite concentrate with at least 30 % P2O5 at 70 % recovery. REE follows apatite in the cleaner steps but only partly. Its recovery is approx. half compared with apatite. The reason for the low REE recovery is likely to be that REE to a large extent is trapped in non-winnable minerals, especially allanite. Almost every form of iron ore and carbon material has been used as a raw material in the production of pig iron in electric reduction furnaces. Experience derived from the operation of the large 33,000-kva. Tysland-Hole furnaces, however, indicates that production results are very much influenced by the raw material conditions. The author presents the principle pattern of the metallurgical structure of the interior of an electric pig iron furnace. On the basis of this, he discusses the variations of electrical and metallurgical conditions for the process which will take place with changing raw materials. The formation of a coke bed underneath the electrodes, and its influence on the furnace operation, is illustrated. There is plenty of evidence to indicate that at least one of man's chief interests in life is to make himself as comfortable as possible. If you doubt this, just watch the fellow next to you for the next half hour trying to find the most comfortable position that a hard chair has to offer. Comfort, however, does not always mean an easy chair. To some, it may mean a wealth of money: to another, freedom from worry. But to most of us, it means first of all a comfortable atmosphere in which to live, and to a great many of us it probably also means freedom from that annoying task of firing the furnace. Today more than ever before, automatic heat is one improvement that is placed high on everyone's list. Perhaps this is because automatic heating is becoming relatively cheaper. Perhaps it is because of a good publicity campaign on the part of the oil and gas men or maybe it is just that we are getting lazier day by day. At any rate, almost every issue of Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, or your other favorite home magazine carries an article extolling the virtues of this or that automatic heating system.
