A banquet, attended by 467 members and visitors, was held at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg, at 8 p.m. on Friday, 21st March, 1969, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Institute. Sy Edele Dr de Wet het geen bekendstelling nodig nie-alhoewel hy ons minister vir slegs die afgelope twee jaar is, het hy reeds talle funksies van ons Mynbedryf bygewoon en het baie vriende gemaak onder ons. The Honourable Dr de Wet was born in the Free State. He is a grandson of that very famous general Christiaan de Wet, who caused so much pain to the British forces and for so many months so successfully eluded them in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. He was educated at both the Pretoria and Witwatersrand Universities. He first practised medicine at Boksburg and then moved to Vanderbijlpark, so you see he has an early association with gold mining on the Witwatersrand, and in moving to the Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark district he became closely involved in our coal mining and metallurgical industries. South Africa's first steel was poured from a l0-ton open hearth furnace belonging to the Union Steel Corporation in Vereeniging in 1913. Dr de Wet has been mayor of Vanderbijlpark and for several years has been their member of parliament. More recently, the Honourable Dr de Wet has filled with great honour that most important office of Ambassador for the Republic of South Africa in London. At present he wears two hats, in that he is Minister of Planning and of Health, but more important is his cloak, that of Minister of Mines, which I trust offers him the greatest comfort. To fulfill these three arduous tasks must demand of him a terrific devotion to duty, and in doing this he carries on that loyal tradition of service to his fatherland so evident in his grandfather. I am fully conscious of the responsibilities that devolve upon me as Minister of Mines in a country where mining makes so vital a contribution to economic progress and development and has, in fact, laid much of the foundation on which our present proud edifice is built. The achievements of the mining and metallurgical industry in its diversified activities arouse feelings equivalent to paternal pride, but let me speedily add that in considering any family relationship that may exist, the Minister of Mines should not be regarded in the role either of a fairy godmother or an indulgent father.

Hydrogen-direct-reduction of iron ore in a vertical shaft furnace is a potential process that could significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the steel industry. This approach requires the pelletisation of iron ore fines, which then undergo high temperature induration to strengthen the pellets before they can be fed into the shaft furnace. Here we report on investigations into the disc-pelletisation behaviour of New Zealand titanomagnetite ironsand, and its subsequent induration and hydrogenreduction behaviour. Initial studies focused on the effect on pellet strength of varying ironsand particle size and induration conditions using bentonite and a commercially sourced carboxymethylcellulose binder. Green pellets formed with ironsand of average particle size of 65 μm exhibited optimal strength. The compressive strength of these pellets after induration at 1200°C for 2 hrs in air was measured to be 976 N. Interparticle bonding within the indurated pellets occurs due to a combination of titanohematite recrystallisation (from oxidation of titanomagnetite), and the formation of a liquid bonding phase due to interdiffusion with the bentonite and subsequent melting. Further investigation with various binders showed that a combination of both organic and inorganic binders was essential to achieve optimal pellet strength. Carboxymethyl-cellulose binders provides green strength, whilst inorganic binders such as bentonite promoted high indurated pellet strength. Hydrogen reduction tests in a thermogravimetric furnace showed that all the pellets could achieve a maximum reduction degree of 97 per cent at 1100°C, indicating that the different pellet preparation procedures had no significant effect on reducibility. Pellet recipes developed in this work are now being used to investigate vertical shaft hydrogen-DRI processing of NZ ironsand in a kg-scale laboratory reactor.

Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) expedited an effort to evaluate and retrofit important state-owned toll bridges to en­hance performance of the state's transportation systems during and after major (credible) earthquake events. Imbsen and Associates, Inc. (IAI) along with their sub-consultants, were awarded a contract to conduct seismic evaluation and to develop retrofit design for Benicia-Martinez Toll structure, to meet a "Serviceable" performance requirement after the event of a "Safety Evaluation Earthquake." This paper describes the design and construction specifications for the deep foundations supporting the main spans of the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. Benicia-Martinez Toll Structure (George Miller Bridge), a high-level deck-type welded truss bridge with welded girder approach spans, carries Interstate Route I-680 over the easterly end of Carquinez Strait near San Francisco, CA. The nearly 5000 ft long main truss structure consists of ten spans, ranging from 330' to 528' in length, supported on cellular reinforced con­crete pier structures. Foundation systems across the waterway, consist of cellular reinforced concrete footings, supported by groups of 6' diameter, concrete filled, steel caissons, resting on 5' deep rock sockets, at depths of 50' to 150' below the water level. Seismic evaluation of the existing foundation systems accounted for spatially varying ground motion along the length of the structure, variability of foundation material strength (i.e. at bed-rock), variation and effects of scour depth on the performance of the foundations, and dy­namic soil-structure interaction. Performance of caissons beyond their elastic strength, as well as their effects on the behavior of the foundations and substructures were evaluated and considered in establishing foundation vulnerabilities. Several retrofit strategies were considered leading to a final retrofit strategy to strengthen end connections of existing caissons, as well addition of new caissons to provide adequate lateral force resistance for the foundations. Final design package includes specifications as well as construction methods and requirements for existing and new caissons, under traffic, and pile load testing procedures for design loads of up to 12500 kips per caisson.

The levels of nitrogen in steel produced in various metallurgical vessels vary significantly. For example, the tap nitrogen levels in steel produced in the BOF are around 4Oppm, as compared to 70-100ppm in both DC and AC electric arc furnaces. Given the pressing need to reduce nitrogen levels in steel to satisfy customer demand, IPSCO Inc. has gained considerable experience in controlling nitrogen levels in steel over the course of the last three years. Hence, a cost effective process has been developed through an intensive nitrogen control program from steel melting in the EAF through to the continuous slab casting stage. This paper describes the practices employed at each stage of the steelmaking process that have enabled IPSCO Inc. to reduce and control nitrogen levels in steel.

A real-time transient pipeline simulation was used to model the operational pressure response in the concentrate and tailings pipelines of the Minera Los Pelambres copper mine in Chile. A high-fidelity simulator was needed to train the operators on safe operation of the pipeline for different scenarios. A simulator that solves the transient equations was used to dynamically predict the pressure and flow throughout the pipeline to provide real-time responses to operational changes such as opening or closing a choke valve, or sending a water batch. Slurry rheological properties were incorporated into the model. This paper presents the technical background of the pipeline simulation model and the study of slurry properties. The paper shows the results of the transient simulation for different operating scenarios such as start-up, shutdown and leakage, by presenting the hydraulic gradient curves for each case. Finally, the paper briefly presents how the simulator was connected to an emulated control system and used to train the operator, it demonstrates the most effective tool available to learn to resolve undesirable conditions.

The chains of armored face conveyor (AFCs) are constantly in contact with water and wet coal, which results in a significant proportion of unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment due to corrosion. While reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the most prevalent water treatment methods for reducing salinity and dissolved solids in coal mining, its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains has not been well studied. This work studies the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. Immersion tests followed by surface micromorphology analysis and corrosion indices indicate that the RO water increased the corrosion rate of the AFC chains due to the reduced tendency of preventive films on the chains.

Much has been published by various investigators on the use of activated carbon for adsorbing precious metals from cyanide solution and pulp. For the benefit of the reader, a list of these earlier publications appears at the end of this report. The present paper deals only with a process for extracting gold from gold-laden carbon and re-use of the de-adsorbed carbon. At the Getchell mine, Redhouse, Nev., experiments have been in progress for several years concerning the use of activated carbon to adsorb gold from their slime circuit pulp. The experimental work has been successful. Their practice has been to ship the gold-laden carbon to a smelter for treatment, which meant the total loss of the carbon in addition to smelter and freight, charges, all of which proved costly and wasteful.

Nuclear explosive fracturing has been suggested as a method to make hard rock amenable to extraction by a modified block-caving method. To evaluate this possibility, conventional and nuclear blasting practices are discussed, underground mining methods for large deposits and their costs are described, and the cost of fracturing ore with a nuclear explosive and subsequent mining by a modified caving system is estimated and compared with both open-stope and block-caving mining costs. While the direct cost of fracturing the ore in hard rock with a nuclear explosive is less than with conventional explosives, additional costs imposed by the use of nuclear explosives may make their use unattractive for deep mining.

The heavy liquid separation (HLS) process was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to develop a means of concentrating minerals from natural ores, Various spodumene ores were tested in a 0.4-inch diameter cyclone using pure tetrabromoethane (TBE) as the heavy liquid. Studies were initiated to examine the influence of (1) pulp density (2) feed grade, (3) cyclone pressure, (4) cyclone apex opening size) (5) cyclone vortex finder opening sand (6) mineral particle size on the separation efficiency. Each of these factors was found to affect the heavy liquid separation in some degree; the mineral particle size exhibited the greatest effect and the ore feed grade the least. Conditions necessary to yield an 85 percent spodumene concentrate with an 85 percent recovery were determined to be: 70 psig pressure, 10 percent solids, 0.08-inch apex opening, 0.11-inch vortex finder opening and a minimum amount of minus 200-mesh fines in the feed. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying over 90 percent and indicated mineral recoveries exceed-in 90 percent.

Catastrophic failures of dams and tailing storage facilities (TSF) have triggered the development of integrated ground monitoring concepts for hazard assessment, risk management and public safety. These concepts are based on knowledge and expertise of persons technically responsible for TSF. The aim is to combine this implicit and explicit knowledge with the data of in-situ- and remote sensors. Risk management for TSF must include a comprehensive monitoring program that integrates data from ground based-, air-borneand satellite-based sensors. Researchers at Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, and EFTAS, Muenster, Germany, are fusing a variety of sensor data to enhance the capability and performance of TSF monitoring to ensure public safety downstream of TSFs. This paper describes the variety of sensors implemented in numerous research projects. It gives an outlook in terms of planned satellite missions with innovative equipment like hyperspectral sensors. The implementation of the data of these sensors in the analysis will increase the understanding of spatio-temporal impacts of mining activities. Future opportunities are explained by a datacube approach.

Composite phase change materials are widely used in energy-saving and energy efficient process. Nano-encapsulated phase change materials are especially significant for making advanced working fluid applicable to waste heat recovery or storage. In this study, silica-coated stearic acid (SA) Nano composite phase change materials were prepared from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and stearic acid (SA) via sol-gel process. The materials were investigated by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC).The FE-SEM and TEM results show that monodisperse microspheres with stable core– shell structure were formed and SA was encapsulated in the silicon dioxide shell. The FT-IR results show that there were no chemical reaction between silicon dioxide and SA, which is the chemical property of the composite material, is stable. The DSC results show that the composite phase change material has favorable heat capacity.

The Bureau of Mines compiled information for the nonspecialist about natural gas liquids recovery from hydrocarbon streams in natural gas processing plants. Attention is directed to the impact of the technology of processing and the quality of gas processed in view of the increased availability of natural gas for processing. Significant changes in product and market trends within the natural gas processing industry are highlighted. Fixed capital-plant costs for grassroots, refrigerated-oil absorption and conventional adsorption schemes, adapted from published studies, are presented giving ranges of cost estimates for medium-sized plants. Marketed products of the natural gas processing industry are briefly discussed in relation to automotive air pollution problems and approaches to their control.

The hazards to the public posed by abandoned mine shafts are well documented. As private development encroaches on previously mined areas, the potential for fatalities and serious injuries from abandoned mine shafts increases. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research into cellular concrete as a material for sealing these openings. The current work involves testing the characteristics of cellular concrete before and after it had been pumped or dropped from different heights into a simulated mine shaft. Cellular concrete was pumped vertically up to and subsequently dropped from heights of 18 and 37 m into concrete forms. Wet density measurements were made at multiple sampling points in the test circuit. Air content determinations and uniaxial compressive strength testing were conducted. Research results showed significant loss in air content and changes in the characteristics of cellular concrete during pumping or dropping from various heights. Recommendations on effective use of cellular concrete for sealing abandoned mine shafts are made.

Operations at the cement plant of the Permanente Corporation, in the hills about 45 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles west of San Jose, are interesting to the members because of the adoption of modern hydrometallurgical methods for handling and beneficiating raw materials. Closed-circuit grinding, classification, hy-droseparation, flotation, agitation, and thickening are familiar terms at this cement plant. These methods make it possible to process refractory limestone into suitable materials for the mallufacture of modern cements. Construction of the plant, having originally a design capacity of 7000 bbl. of cement per day, was started in June 1939, and the first clinker was ground on the following Christmas Day. At present the capacity is about 12,000 bbl. of finished cement per 24 hr., most of the production being low-heat cement. † About 3I30 tons of limestone, 620 tons of clay and I00 tons of gypsum are required daily for this output. Occasionally iron oxide is added to the clay to obtain the desired composition. This, together with the gypsum, is purchased from outside sources. up to the present time, the ccrporation has produced low-heat, normal, moderate-heat, moderate-sulphate-resisting, high-early-strength, oil-well, modihed-oil-well, and plastic cements. Most of the present production is for Shasta Dam, near Red- ding, Calif., the total demand being 5,800,000 bbl. of cement. Following are some of the cement require ments of the Shasta Dam specifications: Per Cent Chemical composition: Loss in ignition.......... 2.25 Insoluble residue......... 0.75 SO3.................... 2.25 MgO................... 5.'' "The process modeling and simulation studies aim for better process operation and favorable environmental impact. The objective of this work is to set up a simulation model of the Assarel copper flotation circuit for planning and optimization of the process with the aim of increased metal recovery. The model is parameterized based on laboratory flotation tests of ore samples from the Assarel mine together with mineralogical studies by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). A combination of several techniques allows reliable identification of mineralogical composition of the selected samples. The changes in the proportion between sulfide minerals in various products along the circuit have been also documented. Further, this information is used in the simulation model and in data reconciliation procedures for establishing mass balance. The simulation accuracy is studied by comparing the simulations with the plant survey based mass balance. Constructed simulation model can be used to run alternative process scenarios. As an example, the flotation circuit performance with different reagent regimes is simulated based on data from batch flotation tests. Two reagents were considered for this purpose, dithiocarbamate-based one and xanthogen formate/mercaptan blend. It has been revealed that these reagents do not have the same influence on the selective flotation. The one improves flotation of gold and overall recovery but without notable selective action. In contrast, the other showed better selectivity towards copper, rejecting more gangue and lowering gold recovery. The model is also applicable for process optimization studies with different feed compositions, flowrates and circuit configurations. INTRODUCTION In the pursuit for elevated technological indicators, finding an optimal set of process parameters fully utilizing the potential of the equipment is a key factor to success. Over the past decades, there has been a substantial development in flotation circuit optimization through performance benchmarking using metallurgical modelling and steady-state computer simulation. Practical simulation engineering tools are based on experimental data obtained from laboratory tests and from plant surveys and operation data. With the help of flotation models, it is possible to study grade-recovery response with different feed compositions and throughputs, and with various cell-operating parameters, as well as to evaluate and design different flowsheet configurations. Outotec’s HSC Chemistry® software, which incorporates simulation and mass balancing modules alongside with several other tools, can assist with this optimization (Mattsson et al., 2015)."

Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

Efficient and effective management of mine tailings is essential for continued successful development of Alberta?s vast oil sands resources. Syncrude Canada Ltd. continues to research novel tailings management techniques in an effort to improve production efficiency and environmental sustainability. During the summer months of 2001, Syncrude Canada Ltd., in collaboration with members of the Canadian Oil Sands Network for Research and Development (CONRAD), conducted field-scale trials of thickened tailings technology at Syncrude?s Aurora mine, north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. This paper provides an overview of the test program including discussion of objectives, test configuration, and program observations. 0Data collected during the field trial indicate that substantial swings in feed slurry composition challenge effective thickener operation. When coarse mineral solids dominated slurry composition, thickener rake torque rose to unmanageable levels. It was determined that the end-of-pipe depositional characteristics of thickened oil sands slurry were generally consistent with present understanding of oil sands tailings slurries. After shear, thickener underflow product exhibited very shallow beach angles and a limited capacity to keep coarser particles in suspension indicating that stacking of ?paste-like? thickener underflow product from a conventional thickener is not practical in an oil sands setting unless process adjustments can be made to increase the underflow density and/or preserve the initial high yield stress of the underflow during transport and deposition. These technical challenges notwithstanding, Thickened Tailings technology offers considerable promise for recovery of warm water from oil sands process tailings.

Apparent viscosities of hypo-eutectic (Al-7% Al) and hyper-eutectic (Al-35% Si) binary alloys were measured in the semi-solid state using a Couette type viscometer at variable shear rates. Analysis of the microstructural evolution demonstrates the differences in the rate and degree of attrition of the primary phase particles which are characteristic of the thixotropic nature of the semi-solid alloy. It was observed that the Si primary phase in the hyper-eutectic alloy is much more difficult to fragment than the dendritic a-Al phase in the hypo-eutectic alloy. For the case of the a-Al, the dendritic structure is broken down by attrition and fracture of the dendrite arms whereas the fracture of the Si hexagonal crystals in the hypereutectic alloy occurs along the {100} and {110} cleavage planes. Results are presented for fixed solid fractions of the primary phase at isotherm condition for each type of alloy.
